You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

The Young X-Men were alright, you guess.

You make your way back through the ruins of the scar, the cold biting through your hood, lingering like drops of flame on the tips of your ears. It hasn’t escaped your notice that they’ve been getting more and more sensitive lately, presumably in response to your rapidly expanding senses. More, tighter-packed nerve clusters, maybe? Something like that.

Kevin, Gaby and Laura walk beside you. You can’t help but notice the way Gaby’s tail jerks inward whenever the cold breeze ruffles your coat. Still haven’t spoken to her all too much about Typhon and your fathers’ work – not that you even know what your father’s work was really about. Laura described Joseph as a tall, burnished creature that you can’t quite reconcile with the pale, limping scientist you encountered last week. You have no bearing on reality where he’s concerned – on how much of what he let slip was fact, and how much was some kind of deluded fantasy.

Either way, you have other things to worry about. Other things to do.

You always do, these days.

Let's go Vampire hunting.
>>

Dumpster diving time, look for food, metal pipe (conductive, breath resistant one), extra change of clothing, soap, and a bow/tub/exc ting to wash your clothes in. Any of those would be nice.

>[X] Tag with Laura.
>[X] Write in.

You consider heading down to the Tabbycat, but quickly realize that, at present, you’re far too rank to possibly gain entrance. Ms. Hardy didn’t seem like a bad person, exactly, but you doubt she has much stomach for men that smell like spoiled milk.

“Why don’t you go on ahead?” You say, mostly on Gaby’s account. Despite that coat of fur, she doesn’t seem to handle the cold all too well. “I’m just gonna do a quick bit of foraging.”

You say goodbye to the others and set out into the scar, opening your nostrils to the wonders of the world. You’re just looking for anything you can fill up with water, really – a bathtub, a really big-ass bowl, whatever. You’ll need soap, too, at some point, but that’s secondary.

Once you’ve gotten all that out the way you can catch that game of tag with Laura.

Im a big proprietor of SF, but invis 5 lets us turn objects invisible.

Now imagine just looking straight through walls as we shift its thermal light reflection into invisibility and turn on our thermal vision.

Seeing through walls without anyone the wiser.

Wonder if our eyes can see in UV now.
>>
Noriko has been the one providing the gang with drinking water this whole time by melting snow with her power.

Luke's power can be used to amplify Noriko's power. The Luke/Noriko combo would be way better at melting mass amounts of snow than any of JJ's powers.
>>
>>31474527
Man that does sound nice. We should be able to smell taught most walls anyway tho. Unless they are hermetically sealed or something.

But invisible weapons sound good to me. Also invisible cars and bikes.
>>
>>31474346
>23
>acceptable I guess

It doesn’t take you long to find what you need. You locate a relatively intact bathtub in the slumped skeleton of an old department store. It needs almost as much washing as you do, but the porcelain has suffered minimal cracking, so it’ll do. You actually surprise yourself by heaving it over one shoulder, kinda forgetting just how much you can lift now, and make your way back down to the station.

You’re greeted by a procession of bemused smirks as you make your way down the steps to the platform. Kevin actually laughs a bit when you say that you’ve been giving some thought to hygiene recently.

Well, whatever, he doesn’t have your nose. He doesn’t know how bad it truly is.

A little maliciously, you ask Gaby what she thinks he smells like, and ask Lucas and Nori if they could melt a load of snow or something. As it happens, Noriko can do that on her own, though you can’t help but notice the entire group stepping back as she rolls up her sleeves.

It takes you a while, but eventually you have an actual bath full of water sitting on the old tracks, positioned just slightly out of sight.

We can't selectively make something invisible to whatever type of light we want. It's total invisibility or nothing. And, I doing think we can selectively turn parts of an object invisible without an extrapolative. We would need to turn the entire building invisible.

If you want to see through walls buy the echolocation upgrade.
>>
>>31474579
Can we scavenge for some soap? If we find a bar in a dumpster. we can cut the outer layer off and it'll be good as new.
>>

Pretty sure people don't throw soap away like that very often.
>>
>>31474640
>f you want to see through walls buy the echolocation upgrade

That's not how echolocation works.

You might be thinking of tremor sense.
>>
>>31474640
level 5 lets us turn objects invisible, it will have a limit, probably linked to its concentration.
This makes it very easy to control, and to use partially on things like walls.

Though you have a point on the selectivity, would have to ask crusty if its possible.

There is no tremor sense. And yes that is how echolocation works.
>This ability allows him to ‘see’ in a 360 degree arc, often through intervening materials, so long as there is enough sound to provide the required information.
This is a quote from echolocation power description. We wont be able to "see" through sound proofed material. But normal walls wouldn't be a problem. Echolocation in this setting is the same a daredevils power.

>but get soap anyway!

“What about soap?” Asks Noriko, withdrawing her hands from a tub of rapidly cooling water, a few errant arcs of electricity still playing over her nails.

“Soap?”

“Yeah. You know… that stuff you wash yourself wi”–

“I know what soap is.” You interrupt, shooting her a pointed stare. “I haven’t been homeless that long. Anyway, what do you think this is, a hotel? We’ve got water, that’s”–

And then, like a beam of light over the horizon, a thought strikes you. You pause, cogs clicking into place, and feel yourself deflating a little.

“…Actually, I just had an idea. I’ll be right back…”

You head out into the cold, making your way well beyond the borders of the scar, into the pulsing arterial mass of the city proper. You’re not unfamiliar with this stretch, so, between your innate sense of direction and the hints provided by your nose, you soon find what you’re looking for – a fancy hotel a little ways up North, with big, fancy dumpsters full of crap nobody in their right minds should be throwing out.

Soap, for example.
>>
>(2/2)

Making sure that you’re not being watched (hotels are mad stingy, even about the stuff they chuck out. You learned that the hard way), you rifle through the accumulated detritus of everyone that’s checked in since last week, pushing through all sorts of embarrassing and occasionally outright bizarre crap before you strike the motherload. You don’t just grab a bar of soap. You quite literally fill your pockets with it, to the point at which its mere presence begins to cut in to the aura of stank generated by your clothing.

It takes you a little under an hour to make your way back, the slight drooping of the sun indicating sometime after midday.

And so, after painstakingly removing the upper layer from your chosen bar of soap (you convince a bemused Layla that this is in fact very necessary), you wash your stuff. No actual bathing today, on account of having no way to dry yourself, but you manage to wring the most offensive of smells out of your clothing.

Getting Layla to fold them up beside the fire, you sit as close as you can manage, clad only in a ratty pair of boxers. Nearby, Noriko prepares another load of water for herself.

Counterfeiting goods seems a little out of character for JJ. Even more so if the goods disappear when the clone disappears, because in that case it's basically theft.

>[X] Talk to Layla.

Summoning the reeling sensation of flight, you feel your arms twist and warp, lengthening into wings, which you close around yourself for a nice layer of membrane between you and the cold. A measure of modesty, too. You’d have thought that four years a hobo would’ve decimated any capability for shame in your body, but apparently not.

You guess you never got to go through that whole ‘coming of age’ stuff you see in films, where you get all comfortable with yourself and stuff. You can add that to the list of crap your X-gene stole from you.

“Hey.” You say, shuffling over to Layla. “I can’t help but notice that you’re one person again.”

“Oh.” She grins widely, and smacks herself on the shoulder, like she’s trying to get the last scraps of ketchup out of a bottle. Immediately, she sprouts three extra hers from the opposite side, all of them turning to you with the same grin on their face. Creepy. “Gyeah, it works like that. It’s it great?”

Her tone’s still a little muffled with the traces of a cold. You can tell simply by proximity that her fever’s gone down, though.

“Yeah… it’s…” Great isn’t the word you’d use. “…It’s pretty cool. Just, don’t get caught doing it outside, alright?”

“Duh.” She rolls her eyes. “I’m not retarded, JJ.”

“Just checking. How many… you’s… can you make, anyway?”

She grins even wider, if possible, and shrugs.

“I dunno.” Says the closest one, the sentence running down the line. “I tried falling over a few times and I got like twenty.”

Wow. That’s… a lot of Laylas.

This has gotta be one of the weirder ones. The weirdest, maybe.

“So… how does it work?”

“Hmm?” She replies, in triplicate.

“I mean, like… do you know what they’re all thinking?”

The one in the middle screws up its eyes, stroking an invisible goatee, and they/she/whatever release a perfectly synchronized sigh of consideration.

“Well…” Closest Layla furrows her brow and sort of smirks knowingly, like someone trying to explain a joke nobody else gets. She leans an elbow on the one beside her and the copy picks up where she left off: “How can I explain this… it’s like, I know what we’re all seeing, and we all do what we want each other to do… I guess we kind of share thoughts? It’s like we’re separate, but not separate. We all want the same things and stuff… it’s hard to describe?”

Not a perfect answer, but maybe she just needs time to get into the groove of this whole thing, figure out what she can feel and what she can’t, what she can control and what she can’t…

You certainly did, after all.

“Do you all get hurt if one of you does?”

She shakes her head. “Don’t think so. Tried pinching myself, only one of me felt it. Dunno about actual hurt. I asked Nori to go all Electro on me but she told me that wasn’t ever happening…”

You feel your brow furrowing.

“Yes, that’s never happening.”

“Whatever…”

You watch as the three blur at their borders and revert to being one, and a thought veers out of the dark, striking you across the head.

“Say… could you try taking off a shoe, and then”–

“Hah!” She guffaws loudly, a smirk pulling at her cheeks. “Don’t bother, I already tried. Stuff just vanishes when I go one.”

Oh…

TEAM TRAINING EXERCISE - CTH
CTH is the standard setting for the hobo danger room (Danger Scar). It involves the group being split into two teams and Layla. Layla is going to be with the defending team. The other three are randomly chosen hobo mutants that have to capture the Layla. The teams are all picked from a hat, so it's a different set of partners each time. They have to grab the clonehobo and escape from the defending team's base. You could get the insanely competent Lucas/Laura/Lizard demolishing the ex junkies and Spaniard, or have Lucas/Noriko/Laura sniff out JJ and help aim the Lucascannon at the invisible bugger.
It's an activity that focuses on power control, bond-building between friends and how to actually do stuff in a fight.

I don't know if it would be worth it. JJ's life kinda sucks. His family's gone, as far as he knows, he has like a handful of friends, and he has three major antagonists to deal with. All of which are stronger than he is. And most importantly he rolls like a crackbitch.

Go jack it to some hentai quest if you want some cartoon validation so bad.

Why would there be a shitstorm? Anyone with a brain would have been able to see it coming. It's just a couple of people trying to cock block JJ.
>>
>>31477564
>Waifu bullshit

And so we reach the point every quest does, when there's more than platonic female development, and you insist it's bad because others ham-hock it.

Are you really going to insult CJ by calling it 'waifushit? Can't you just trust him to handle it?

I think we all understand we have bigger purposes anyhow.

You waste a bit of time waiting for your clothes to dry, mostly just letting yourself relax and regroup, mentally and physically. You’re still feeling oddly drained, even now, as though your time in that cocoon was spent burning through all the soft parts of yourself. It’s not just the creeping weariness, either. You don’t feel it all the time, but when you slow down, when you give yourself a moment to simply exist, you notice the fundamental changes in the very knitting of your being. You feel… tempered. You feel like someone’s gone through you and cleaned out everything you didn’t need or didn’t want, and now you’re trying to fit what’s left back together.

And it is fitting together. Maybe better than before. But it doesn’t feel right yet.

Pushing it aside, you ask Layla to pick up your stuff, and she nudge-duplicates herself over there, scooping up your clothes and passing them back down the line. You get the impression that she’ll be doing a lot of that from now on.

Pulling your clothes on, you take a moment to marvel at the unfamiliar softness, and make your way to the stairs, where Laura sits in reticent silence.

“Hey.”

She glances up at you, green eyes withholding a question.

“Up for that workout?”

And you think she smiles, just a little.
>>
>>31477537
What? Why?
Why would I ever want to do that?
What, exactly, is my motivation in this scene?
>>
>(2-3)

It doesn’t turn out quite the same as last time. There’s more back-and-forth than you expected, and for the first time since your little disappearing act, you come to fully appreciate just how much you’ve changed, genetically speaking. You’re faster than her now – over open ground, anyway – and more than make up for all her ninja skills with sheer speed and dexterity.

You make your way across the scar, criss-crossing back and forth through a succession of increasingly hazardous ruins. You find yourself doing things you never thought possible – leaping from one heat-warped girder to the other, cartwheeling effortlessly through the air, even, at one point holding yourself up along the side of a lamppost, your shape extending horizontally in relation to the ground.

Strangest of all, you find yourself ‘feeling’ her when she’s about to pounce, like a warning-flare in the back of your head. Laura’s fast and skilled enough that you don’t always evade her, but you’re pretty sure you’re sensing her coming before she even moves.

One thing she has in spades over you, however, is stamina. Eventually you find yourself lying on your back in the open-air ruins of some old pizzeria, the snow stinging your shoulders. She sits beside you, her breath even despite the frantic pounding of her heart.

You take a moment to catch your breath, glancing over through one of the shattered windows, into the horizon. The sun is gradually thinking out into an orangey-red smear.

You must’ve been at this for hours.
>>
>>31477564
>This waifu bullshit always fucks up quests.
This shit is hilarious. The only reason it's an issue in a quest like this (normal, not focused much on a specific thing or goal) is because of faggots like you who make it a problem.

Our first and strongest relationship since the quest started has been with Laura. The chances of JJ and her getting together are pretty likely. Deal with it or get out.
>>
>>31477616
I really like the way Crusty has handled Laura's character. And JJ's relationship with her as a whole. Crusty's a good enough writer to make it work. There hasn't been any wafu shit storms this entire quest. I don't know why people seem to want to start one now.

“How’d you…” You pause, breathing deep. “There was a bit where I totally lost your scent. How’d you do that?”

She stares down at you, and blinks.

“Pay attention to the direction of the wind, and change your position accordingly. Proper use of elevation can also help.”

You feel your face crack open into a huge grin.

“You can… pay attention to… all that stuff while… running an’ jumping about like that?”

She nods slowly. Her eyes watch you in silence, thoughts forming in the bright green.

“Do you find this difficult?”

You laugh a little. “Well, it’s… not easy.”

She is silent for a moment. Her eyes trail away from you, into that nothing space of nowhere in-particular.

“I am sorry.” She says, quietly, suddenly enunciating her words with tentative, deliberate slowness, as if handling something priceless, or learning a language for the first time. “I do not know any other activities that are enjoyable to me.”

You feel the quiet of oncoming night settling around you, and the world turning, and her warmth rushing through and from her, folding over you. Your breath glows against the cold.

“It…” You feel your chest sag inwards a little. You try not to appear so out of breath. “I enjoyed myself. It was fun. And… I guess, if you don’t know what you like, we’ll just have to try out a load of stuff, right?”

She look down at you. Her eyes are sharp, verdant mysteries. Her fingers coil around yours.

You stay there for some time.

The hushed silence is disturbed when your stomach, still aching from the workout you just endured, rumbles loudly. You feel yourself shrink inwards a little, cringing awkwardly, and suddenly you’re aware of the hungry pangs in your chest.

“You are hungry.” Laura asserts, her tone flat.

You chuckle a little, and pull yourself partway up, the world righting itself, coming back into total focus.

“Yeah… I guess.” You smile sheepishly, rolling some of the exhaustion out of your shoulders. “Uh, you mind if the first thing we do is get lunch?”

She blinks, and stares off into the descending black.

“I don’t think it will be lunch.” She corrects. “That is fine, however.”

You get up and leave together, heading out of the scar.

You almost don’t notice that you’re still holding hands.

We need to up our agility a fair bit to make bullet-dodging practical.
It's still a pretty good power. But it's considerably less broken than people have been implying.

On the bullet dodging, btw... anyone else think contortion could be useful for such?

if QTG really wanted to fuck up the quest, they would have. and they save that for things they decide they hate, like PGQ.

when a quest gets more than ten people, there will be arguments. because people don't like it when other people think differently from them.

We either have to start getting along or hope a bunch of people just leave.

AW MAN TIME TO PUSH HORNS AND TAIL AGAIN
>>
>AUTONOMIC SEQUENCING
>Requires: Level 3 Enhanced Agility, Level 3 Enhanced Senses
>Cost: 2
>JJ may activate a short term ‘recording mode’, allowing to repeat any action he observes within this duration down to the finest detail. This does not actually enhance his memory – he may execute the action, but he does not remember anything more than normal. Additionally, he can execute that action and that action alone. For example, he could perfectly copy a man’s signature after ‘storing’ that motion, but he could not write a new sentence in the same handwriting.

>ENHANCED MUSCLE MEMORY
>Requires: Level 4 Enhanced Agility, Level 4 Enhanced Senses, Autonomic Sequencing
>Cost: 3
>JJ’s rate of learning when it comes to physical action skyrockets. He does not immediately perfect an action after observing it, but his muscles retain certain reflexes far more efficiently and his ability to extrapolate how an action is performed in sequence with others (unlike Autonomic Sequencing, which simply stores and repeats one action) is heightened to superhuman levels.

Any thoughts on working towards these?

>With super strength, throw-able rubble is only a punch away.

Yeah, I just kind of expect us to eventually get picked up by the facility again or some other group/agency that's used to dealing with powered people. I don't expect it to be anytime too soon, but this setting just isn't kind to mutants and we're getting pretty well known.
>>
Typhon has level 5 Enhanced Strength, right? That's why he's Adonis-level buff

Peterwrites when? I'd kind of like to see a bit where Peter looks up Joshua Green and what his reaction is to the research if any

You said that level 5 powers give JJ some physical changes. Would you mind telling us what the changes would be for the locked powers? Like Vampiric Touch and Phasing and all that.

Is JJ just ugly during Warp Spasm, or does he turn into a monster? I keep thinking he'll become like a Death Claw or something.
>>
>>31478659
The thing about (additional melee beyond claws here), is that it seemingly adds nothing (I could be wrong), especially for it's high cost. Many of those are weaker then the current level, too. Agility, Strength, Shadow Field, 3p or less and likely to have more effect then those

Having muscles doesn't correspond to a character's physical strenght in any way in marvel universe.
>>
>>31478756
They are nice, but you could probably do better grabbing
ENHANCED KINESICS
Requires: Requires: Level 4 Enhanced Agility, Level 4 Enhanced Senses
Cost: 3
JJ’s senses become attuned to the fine details of human locomotion. He becomes capable of accurately predicting a person’s mood and immediate actions based on the subtle flexes and tensions of their physiology. In some cases this ability can reveal more than just mood, and stops just short of reading another person’s mind.

And for less points.
>>
>>31478830
>Having muscles doesn't correspond to a character's physical strenght in any way in marvel universe.

But Crusty said level 5 powers give physical alterations.
>>
>>31478756

>>
>>31478831

>>

>>
>>31478850
>That spoiler

I hope.

And I'd rather us get higher Subdermal Bioweave or Wings first.
>>
>>31478756

Raising Agility further seems like the next thing on our to-do list, so those are both a distinct possibility. But the whims of the thread are fickle indeed, so there's no way to predict when or even if we'll grab 'em.

But yes, as >>31478803 said, being Taskmaster with super strength and agility would be fucking awesome.

>>31478831

That's great and all, but it really isn't nearly as good. Or rather, it's not as good as having the former two in addition to that. Enhanced Muscle memory means we could watch Laura fight and learn how to fight properly at a MUCH faster rate than we are now. Kinesics would let us read people better, but it would only make us slightly better at actually fighting (and even then only because we'd be better at avoiding getting hit).

>>31478850

I'll be gunning for Agility 4 and Wings 3, personally.
>>
>>31478756
Worth getting, but I'd prefer we got to Agility 4 before we consider grabbing autonomic sequencing.
And at that point, we might as well opt for Agility 5.
>>

>>31478783
Typhon's actually just a bit stronger than classic Spider-Man right now. But, like you, his physiology is constantly adapting and improving.

That's a good idea for a Peterwrite, actually.

Phasing would have made you a little paler. Vampiric Touch would have given you notably glowing veins on the underside of your hands, though only when you're 'revving' them, so to speak.

JJ during Warp Spasm is bigger, uglier, and constantly tearing/healing himself up. Many of the same things that happen to Cuchulainn happen to him, for thematic reasons. During the change he spasms so violently that all glass around him shatters, his skin becomes hot to the touch, etc.

>>31479049

Druid is useful, but for different reasons. And while it's fine to theorize that turning JJ into a food-creating druid will stabilize the mutant community and turn him into the messiah, it's not a sure bet.

There's also the fact that learning how to grow food and synthesize sunlight does not help us against the few extremely dangerous enemies JJ has accrued over the course of this quest, or against those we have yet to meet. Being strong and fast and overall a more capable fighter is not only the difference between life and death for JJ, it's the difference between being able to protect those he cares about or not being good enough to do so.

For the record, I'm not against Druid powers. But I think a lot of the people who either are against it or on the fence about it likely think along those lines.
>>

The only other way we can protect out friends is Invis 5. Battle powers (and mobility) are fine, but look at Creeper's actions. He's in WAY over his had and will be bringing the heat to the area SOON. Either we run or we use our head and out voice in this.

For now, focus on wings, agility, subdermal.
