Thankfully, there were two things working your favor. One, the beacon needed ridiculous amounts of energy to carry its message across the vast galactic distances between Earth and the other Companions. That gave you at least another couple of weeks as it charged. Second, all of the Companions had consolidated themselves on the island, meaning that for a short time, all of the Companions on Earth were gathered in one place.

Of course, the Bureau couldn't let this opportunity pass, so a plan was drafted. First, a small strike team would be inserted onto the island. Even though the island was protected by a Circle, there was a gap between it and the ground where intruders could slip in. The strike team would paradrop in, and destroy the focus the MGs were using to generate the Circle. Without that protecting, the Council would use the ODIN satellites to bombard Atlantis into dust, in a unanimous decision to temporarily suspend the ODIN Restriction Treaty.

Well, the plan was simple enough, unless you were part of the strike team, in which you'd have to dodge thousands of enemy MGs, thousands more collaborators, destroy the focus, and get the fuck off the island before it was sunk to the bottom of the ocean.

And guess who was leading it?

"Are you sure it's wise just sending me and Carol in?" You ask Bruttenholm as you review the crazy and suicidal plan he came up with.

"Well, the logic here is that a smaller team would be harder to find." Bruttenholm sighs. "And we fear that a regular person won't be able to keep up with you or Carol, anyways."

"Hm, I think I've got something." Egan nods. She unlocks an equipment chest and takes out what looks like a large poncho.

"It's a camo cloak. First generation optic camouflage." Egan says, holding the cloak up in front of her. I won't get into the specifics, but it's basically a fabric screen. It projects what's directly behind you on the front, and vice versa. Almost impossible to spot at long distances. Just be careful not to get it wet or move too fast. There's a slight lag time and it can't keep up with quick or sudden movements."

"Wow, thanks Egan." You whistle. "This would really help."

"It's the least I can do." Egan nods. "Now, I really need to get back to analyzing the data for that beacon the MGs are setting up. Is there anything else you need?"

I dont see how Alice is going to go without not telling Egan about what she blurted to Leo.

She even finally exploded about it to him, and from her interaction with Mirai, shes getting torn up about it. Its far more in character that she'll confess to Egan tearfully.

"Well, that DOES sound rather interesting." You hear Loki purr. You try not to say anything out loud.

"So... would there be any way to get rid of it?"

"Alice, we hardly know the first thing about quantum physics, and the introduction of magic just muddles things up even more." Egan sighs. "If you can see and hear him, I don't know what to say. However, I highly doubt he could influence your mind in that state."

Well, that was kinda comforting. You hope.

"Sorry, Alice, but I really need to get back to these calibrations." Egan says, returning to her work station. "Good luck on the mission, though."

"Yeah, thanks." You nod and exit the lab.

Leaving things unsaid brings regrets. Alice as a character has done that a lot this is a point where she's doing things to make sure she stops.

"Well, I've tinkered with the Swiss a bit so that it's got a longer range. Even modified the handle so that you can hold a knife with it."

"A super special knife?"

"High frequency." Heph grins. "Basically, the blade vibrates extremely rapidly, giving it a much better ability to cut."

"That is cool." You grin. "Anything else?"

"Well, this is the field tested stuff, so we know it works." Heph shrugs. "We got some other more... experimental stuff."
