>Your name is Fera Walker, and today you embark for the Forging.

>So far:
We wrapped up our meeting with Mica, as it turns out she may be the only remaining lineage of any of the four heroes of the Great Incursion. For some reason this is bad. We didn’t think it was a good idea to press Mica for any more information on that subject for now. We also found out that Rory is responsible for cutting our bowstring last night. Finally, before we headed to sleep last night, we met with Nolan at his home. That makes one more of his family that don’t seem to like us very much. At least Nolan himself is onboard.

You wake up rather abruptly. Funny how any time you wind up a clock and actually set an alarm, you tend to wake up minutes before it would go off. If you could only figure out a way to trick your body to do this without actually needing a clock.

You blink a few times until your eyelids stop being so sluggish. There isn’t much to see in the dark room. You get the feeling you were just in a dream, but you can’t quite remember anything about it. There was this strong sense of purpose, like you were about to accomplish something.

You start to climb out of bed in the darkness. Your back and thigh ache as you slide out of the covers and stretch. You can only imagine what new color the bruises might have turned by now. After fumbling around a set of drawers you produce a sparker and a small candle from them. The raw heat radiating from the candle brings a tiny bit of comfort against the dry icy air that fills this bedroom.

You set the candle down on the drawer so you can get to work carefully dressing yourself. Each of the three tops you put on has you hissing at the motions you have to make. By the time you finally get entirely dressed the clock finally rings. Five in the morning. The sun rises in less than two hours.

>Cont.

>>31413955
>Oops forgot trip. And name.

You crack open the shutters on the window of the bedroom. Moonlight pours in and illuminates little motes of dust that swirl around your arms as you put them back down. The smell of cooked sausages grabs your attention as you sit at the bed. That and syrup. Of course Gil’s up early too, he heads out ahead of all the groups by an hour. Before you can start thinking about all the myriad issues that press on you at the moment, you blow out the candle and head out to the main room.

Sure enough, you see Gil from around the corner cooking a second plate of breakfast. The first plate is already waiting for you at the countertop in the kitchen. He turns just enough to see you pull up a stool. There are no words, but you feel welcome all the same.

Gil always takes his time with meals when he’s in town. Even while he doubled the portions he made for you, on your last day in Lukewater for over a month, he isn’t done with his food by the time you clean your plate.

The two of you have spent what feels like fifteen minutes like this. He seems about ready to head out to business now, yet he lingers with his last bit of egg.

You sit and watch Gil play with his food. You can tell he’s anxious. He was like this the first time you headed out to hunt on your own. He was like this the first time he took you with him to bargain with the fey.

You wonder if he was like this when you were too little to take care of yourself.

You refocus when the sound of teeth clacking against the tangs of his fork cuts the silence. Gil stands up and grabs both of your plates, taking them over to the sink to rinse them.

“You got everything in order then lass?” He speaks over his shoulder as he puts the dishes flat to dry.

“Yes Da’. Bow’s restrung, extra clothing and my jacket’s all in order. Got fresh jerky for the hike.” You hop off your stool. “Got to know my charges pretty well I’d say.”

Gil smiles as he dries his hands with a cloth. “You’d say? That woouldna’ have anythin’ to do with ye sneakin’ round town in the middle of the night?”

“I was just making sure their gear was ready as well!”

He starts heading toward his room, stopping, he says. “Wait, I thought ye did up yer longbow three days ago. Didn’t ye?”

“Oh, yeah.” There goes that moment. “I almost forgot about the sabotage.” You sigh and look out a window.

“The what now?”

“Eh, some time yesterday, someone sneaked into your lodge that has no locks anywhere.”

Gil puts his hands on the back of a seat. “Yer room has a lock, you egged me for months to get that one put in.”

“It’s not very useful if you lost the key Gil!” You scoff out loud.

“Aye...” Gil fiddles with the tip of his greying beard. “So... Somethin’ happened to yer bow then?”

“Someone went and weakened the line, not even cutting it all the way. I think it might have been Rory, but I don’t know why she would even bother.”

“What makes ye say that?” He stands up away from the chair he was leaning on.

“Sister followed her scent from here.”

“Ah, well, good thing ye caught it early...” Gil was never good at hiding worry on his face.

“Miss Whitetread seemed to think it wasn’t a huge deal last night. Does stuff like this really happen every forging?”

Gil seems to lighten up after thinking about this for a second. “Last year wonna the group’s boots were all hidden at the top a the bell tower.” He starts walking toward his room again. “An’ before that, someone swapped alla’ the trail rations that were given out fer bear lure.”

“At least the lure would have been useful!” You call out as you sit down in the loveseat by the table of books. You hear equipment rattling around and straps being adjusted as Gil’s voice comes through the hallway.

“Now that I think of it, usually all those pranks r’ pulled by out of towners.” Gil appears from the hallway, heaping a backpack and a heavy coat. “Yanno, the competitive types. Rory don’t seem like the type.”

“Well unless you did it, she’s the only lead.” You stand up to see Gil off. He smiles and picks his walking stick from the pack with purpose.

“Well, whatever you intend on doin’ about it...” He looks off, searching for words. “Good luck then. I dunno!” He passes you your jacket. “Oh, one more thing.” Gil slips an arm out of his pack’s straps and slings it unto the loveseat you just got up out of. After a bit of wrestling with the large pack he picks something off that was stuffed underneath a bedroll. “I know yer birthday’s comin’ up while yer still out on yer way back so...”

Gill lays out a set of hide armor, expertly sewn together with overlapping swoops of leather. It all seems to have a fish theme as the plates resemble round scales, even what looks like a trout’s face on one of the shoulders. There’s even a set of bracers and gloves customized for archery.

“A little early but, ye might as well break it all in durin’ the Forging I figger.”

You run your hands across the armor. Plenty flexible. It doesn’t even make much noise as you expected the layers of leather squelching over each other might have done. He even went through the trouble of grinding out that leather smell gear usually has. When you turn to Gil he continues to wear that wry smile he usually has. It intensifies a bit when he sees your face.

You try to say how much you appreciate this. This must be what he’s been sneaking around doing for the last week. Your throat only emits little stifled squeaks as you attempt for form syllables. Eh, nevermind then.

You drop the armor and hop over the couch at Gil. He starts to laugh as he catches you, just managing to balance himself by leaning on his stick. “Ohoho! Hey! Ok alright!” Your arms wrap around him behind his backpack as he ruffles your hair.

“You shouldn’t have!” You feel him giggle again when he hears your muffled words.

“Hey, Fera.” He moves his hand to the side of your head as you angle it to face him. “Kin you promise me one thing?” You nod. “Take yer time out there. Winnin’ is fine and all, even with yer huge advantage over the initiates this year. I doon’t care if ye win or not. I just want to see ye again in four weeks.”

“I promise Da’.” Once he peels you off him and stands you on your feet, he crouches down to kiss your forehead.

“Remember to make yer own luck lass.” He hefts his walking stick and starts for the front door. He still has business to double check with before he leaves in an hour, but this is pretty much the last moment alone you’re going to have with Gil for the next month.

You watch him leave. The sound of his boots crunching through the snow grows quieter and quieter as he heads off. You scramble back to your new set of armor. Luckily none of your clothes are very loose. It doesn’t look like you will have to make any changes to the clothing you did pack to be able to wear this over it all, barring the jacket of course. But then the armor itself looks slim enough to not obstruct a jacket much.

It looks the clasps are on the sides, and everything adjusts from the inside. The main upper body part of it fits snugly over three layers of clothing, you might have to ditch the third layer if you want to move around in this effectively. There are a few panels of armor that hang off a sturdy belt that latches into the main part, they all have fin motifs on them.

Just as you thought, the armor is whisper quiet, owed to what seems to be pieces of some silky fabric stitched to the inside of all the soft plates. Hopefully this won’t be too much hassle to clean.

>Cont.
>>
>>31417337

Trying on the bracers, you find they happen to be heavier than they look. Upon closer inspection you can see iron plates underneath the leather. At about the same time you notice that the whole suit seems to be made from alligator, or something very alligator like. The left bracer has a smooth inner surface to keep from causing too much wear on your bowstring. The right bracer is accompanied by a glove with reinforced fingertips on the first three fingers.

It all fits perfectly, obviously. Gil’s really outdone himself this year. You aren’t quite sure how you’re going to top this.

You see the horizon grows a few shades brighter. Now what to do first?

You remember you told Nolan you were going to have everyone double check everything this morning. You also remember neglecting to tell Mica this. You would pass her place on the way to Nolan’s anyway so it shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Since everyone gathers at the central plaza to officially kick off the Forging, you saddle yourself up with all your gear. You can drop off everything in one of the storage rooms at town hall, where SISTER can keep an eye on it this time. Plus, this way you have half of a reason to be showing off the new armor. Sister meows in mild annoyance at the idea. This time from her usual spot under the bench.

Gil doesn’t keep any mirrors in his lodge, but you imagine you look a bit silly with all this gear. In the brief moments you can see your shadow from the streetlamps as you pass, your silhouette looks like a turtle standing on two legs. Your longbow is a bit awkward to carry like this now that you wear a backpack around your body where it usually is slung over a shoulder.

>Cont.
>>
>>31418133

There aren’t many people up yet. But when you get to town hall there are a few people already there. Andrea speaks with a few of the other town elders as they look over a map in one of the rooms as you pass through the hallways. That room that was filled with miscellaneous camping supplies yesterday seems to have been picked clean at this point. Gil isn’t the only ranger
heading out this morning apparently.

You off load your things here and tell Sister to stay put. She whines that she hasn’t eaten this morning yet. “I’ll bring you something before we leave, Sister.” Her tail twitches as she plops down next to your pack.

You see one or two people up and walking around as you head to Bell Street. That missing line still hasn’t been put up yet. Orwin Inn seems to have their lamps on. When you head inside, there are two men, hunters it looks like sitting at a table in front of the fireplace in the inn’s foyer. You do not see Mica’s manager.

One of the hunters glances at you before you head up the stairs, an eyebrow raising quizzically but he says nothing. The hallway isn’t as quiet as it was last night, you hear a few muffled conversations and actually have to press yourself against a wall as a rather large woman exits her room and politely walks past.

Finally you’re at the end of the hallway and staring at the hatch in the ceiling. You wonder if she can even lock this entrance. Maybe she simply puts something over the hole when she wants privacy. Now you aren’t quite sure how to get her attention. Knocking on the ceiling doesn’t quite make sense you think. And you’d rather not gather a lot of attention by calling out to her loud enough for her to hear. If she’s even awake right now. Do half elves have to sleep? Half elves have to sleep you think.

>2x10 to look out!

>Fera gains 1 Willpower for a 2x10 set!

You jump back the instant you realise it’s a bucket of water. It hits one of the ladders rungs and starts spinning. Rather than let it douse you and make a difficult to explain mess in the middle of the inn, you snatch it by the handle.

After it stops sloshing around violently, you look back behind you to make sure no one saw that. Thankfully no one did. You shrug to yourself and start up the ladder with the bucket.

It’s a lot warmer in here than you thought it would be. Maybe the part of the chimney that comes through here is modified? You aren’t quite sure how that would work without just smoking her out of the room.

>Cont.
>>
>>31419421

Not much is different in here from last night. It almost feels as if it’s the same day. You can only dimly see the ends of the room where the windows are. When you slowly fumble towards her table, you set down the bucket on it and look for her lantern.

You knock something over and freeze, waiting for her to wake up from the noise so you can figure out where she is. Nothing happens for a while.

You start to wonder if she’s even here right now. But then you hear her voice mumble something in her sleep.

You turn around and strain your eyes to see where she is. A pile of blankets shifts slightly on her couch. You realise that there’s no way a bed would fit up here, or rather, she’s using the other half of her attic for something that needs lots of space.

You carefully step closer. You can see her messy hair draped over one of the couch’s arms. She rests underneath a large quilted blanket, little moons and stars are depicted in it’s sections.

She mumbles in her sleep. “Hnn, sure, no, it’s ok...I know mom, mmn, sorry mom...” You carefully pull the blanket back to see if that makes her easier to hear. You narrowly avoid screaming out when you lock eyes with her. You sit on the ground for a few seconds before you realise she’s still asleep. “Shess fine, helped pack and stuff... warned me not to bring the cheese... attract critters... I know, don’t get my hopes up...”

You carefully get back up, she does indeed sleep with her eyes open. You really don’t think this has anything to do with being a half elf.

“Mnn, hey Fera, speak of the devil...” She slowly says in a scratchy voice. She blinks again, closing her eyes to go back to sleep apparently. Then she abruptly gets up, tossing two different blankets at you. “Wah! WHAT!” Mica gets up and stumbles around her room before getting her lantern and lighting it. “Did you not bathe last night?” You say, trying to defuse her.

“I! A lot happened yesterday! I was tired!” Her wide eyes start to go back to their usual half lidded state as she adjusts to the lamp light in here. “Ugh, what time is it?”

“Last time I saw a clock it was five.” You decide to be helpful and roll up her blankets.

“Uh, how long was that ago?”

“I don’t know.” You shrug. “What is it with people and clocks? We still have a while until sunrise.”

“Ugh!” She puts a hand to her temple. “Some people have schedules to keep! You know responsibilities and shit like that!” She stops and looks to your face. Her snarl slowly closes back up. “I’m sorry, it’s just super early.” She flops forward across the couch again, covering her face. “I know you don’t uh, really, interact with people a lot. But this is kinda weird, showing up in my room in the middle of the night, morning I mean.”

You suddenly feel intensely awkward, now that she points this out. “Uh, well I couldn’t exactly knock on the ceiling or... maybe if you had a bell people could ring with a string?”

Mica presses her face into her couch harder. “There IS a bell, the other end of the string is in the office downstairs.”

“Right. Sorry.” You quietly stand back up and head toward the hatch. You hear Mica let out a disgruntled “raagh!” into the cushions just as you send up the ladder and close the hatch.

You chide yourself for not realising knocking on doors was more than just politeness for its own sake. Heading downstairs you see one of the two men at the table has left at this point, the remaining one enjoying the last of his coffee. Just as you reach for the front door you hear someone call out.

Nope! Not dealing with whatever this is! You hop out the door and keep going for a few buildings before you realise you look crazy. You look around, the sky is still clear, mostly. Some storm clouds to the south look like they wanna come snow on you in a few hours however. It’s weird being up this early while in town. It’s too quiet here.

You start to have second thoughts about heading to Nolan’s and pissing off another one of his brothers or sisters. He would have to come this way and cross trough Bell Street on his way to the central plaza anyway.

>MFW running away from the law

Hey... did Mica get her gear before we hightailed it?

> >[ ] Meet with Antonia.
>>

Fera already checked with her the night before. Mica's stuff was still in her room.

You find a chair by some tea shop and sit down. The people that run the storefront don’t seem to be up yet. Only about half of the places that aren’t inns are open. Even Cork’s seems to be closed right now. Odd, you seem to remember the woman who runs that place opens before the sun rises usually.

A few minutes pass, at some point you spot one of Antonia’s henchmen again, were it not for the man’s young age you would assume he was a servant of some kind. You think the word is butler? He shuffles across the street shielding a fresh cup of coffee he must have just picked up.
He heads into another inn, the city style one that has big windows for every room.

Soon Mica shows up, shovel in hand. She waves and smiles meekly before scooping snow out of the path. After heading back inside to put the shovel away she appears again with her pack this time. You’re slightly disappointed she doesn't show up wearing the blades on her belt.

The walk to town hall to drop off her things is a bit awkward. Neither of you say anything for most of the walk.

You know you've managed to roll a set the last three times you haven't cleared your email field?

I mean it's still like a 70% chance each time with five d10s, but still.

Mica continues to softly smile in pretty much any direction but yours as the two of you enter town hall and start down the hallway to where you stashed your things. Even Sister is picking up on this, and she eyes you from her perch on top the pile of Your’s and Mica’s gear.

“So, Mica...” You say as the two of you start back outside. “I uh, got you in trouble with your manager didn’t I.”

She sputters and laughs. “Ha! Ah, no, I mean yes, he’s angry. But that’s just him.” She makes sure to look at you this time as she smiles. “He’s just, rude, and dumb!” She laughs again, actually opening her mouth again. She quickly covers her mouth with a hand when she does so.

“You really aren’t a morning person are you?” You fiddle with the new archery glove.

“No! I love mornings! Just, most of the time I don’t spend them being scared awake! Or, being yelled at by Kurt.” She rubs an arm. “Ok actually Kurt’s usually yelling about something. Just not, that...” You think Mica is actually flustered. It’s a pretty common face on Nolan but you’ve yet to see it on Mica. That or she has some kind of cold.

WHELP. none of these actually seem to exclude each other so I'll go with all of them.
>>
>>31422586
So... pick all of the options?
>>
>>31422636
It occurs to me none of these options are exlusionary really. Maybe I just didn't want to put a single "What say?" option
>>
>>31422586

“Yeah... Sorry about all that. I’ll make it up to you soon. Promise.” You pat her shoulder, she jumps slightly when you do so.

“Ha! Yeah! Of course!” Mica seems to calm down finally.

“So, you said Antonia wanted to meet me today? I assume you ran into her last night while finding that trick rope.”

“Oh! yes. She said she had extra compresses that she couldn’t take with her.” You have no idea what compress means in this context, and you sort of tilt your head in confusion. “You know! Compresses! Like the new shop at the west end of Bell Street sells?”

“I uh, don’t really, keep up with town news.” You shrug apologetically.

“Well, they’re like, entire meals. But with all the water taken out!”

That sounds horrendous.

“Are they some kind of emergency ration?”

“No? Bah! You’ll see!” Mica continues with a small bit of her usual bounce back.

“So, I’m still curious. What exactly was your manager, Kurt, yelling about. Why is me visiting such a huge deal? We didn’t even make that much noise.”

“Ah, heh heh, well...” Mica starts to look away again.

>Cont.
>>
>>31422864

“You know!” Mica gestures with her hands in the air.

“I, I REALLY doubt that.” You say with a chuckle. Mica starts to gesture again, her hands open and her head leaning to one side.

“Well, I, I live in that attic for like, years. And I never get any visitors. Annnd...” She starts laughing now. “And, heh, suddenly a ‘friend’ shows up in the middle of the night.” She makes that gesture you saw her make yesterday when she says friend, the clawy one. “And well would you look at that she shows up again, sneaking out of the inn super early morning!”

Why is she still dancing around it?

>SENSE+INTUITION 5d10 to get a clue.

In my defense, the Druid option was the densest of all of them. Except for maybe the Arcanic.

>No sets, height 10 to get a clue.

You puzzle at what exactly is wrong here, especially since it can all be explained. “But he saw me leave yesterday, I was there for fifteen minutes at the most.” Mica just stares at you, her mouth slightly agape. You can see a few of the oddly pointy teeth in her mouth.

“I know right?” She swallows and closes her mouth again. “That’s Kurt for you. Total, loon.” She raises a hand to her face to cover her mouth as she laughs to herself.

All this talking you’ve been doing this week is starting to tire you out, mentally, if that’s possible. Hopefully your voice holds up for the trip.

The two of you end up in on Bell Street again, you start heading toward that inn you saw Antonia’s butler head in. You say the word out loud to yourself a few times, not sure if you got the pronunciation right. Before Mica can ask you about that. You see the younger man walk back out of the front doors of the same inn. He dabs his forehead with a cloth that he quickly stuffs back into a chest pocket in his parka. He starts to turn to walk down the street, but then stops to survey the street up and down. Clearly unsure as to where he’s going.

He sees you two and quickly walks over to you, as fast as he can without actually running.

“Hello? Do you live here?”

“Yes?” The two of you answer in unison.

“Do you know if there is a h-healer in town. Or maybe an apothecary?”

>FULL STOP.
