Karan says, “- that’s why the sky is blue, Michelle. Isn’t that fascinating, Michelle?”

Oh my god. It’s been at least half a hour now and she’s STILL talking.

Mmmmmhmmm. You’ve tuned her out, by and large, by just focusing on the view of the lake. You haven’t seen water this blue and calm...ever? Sure, you saw the Atlantic on the way there and back, but, still...nothing like this.

Karan continues, “Did you know that of all the human senses that your sense of sm-”

...that’s weird.

“Michelle, why is someone at my gate? Who is she, Michelle. Michelle?”

Her...avatar?...that’s been floating nearby looks sour, ...upset? Her tone even seems...hostile.

She pulls up a camera feed and displays it next to her, showing a woman (hey, Wendy’s here!) in an...wow, that car’s a lot newer than you were expecting, honestly.

She looks bored.

“That’s Wendy, Karan. We’re friends. Let her in.”

Karan looks huffy as the gate slowly begins to retract and Wendy rolls in through the yard on the driveway that you’re pretty sure would qualify as a two lane road.

You hope this isn’t going to be a thing with her. It.

Wendy parks lazily up front, which you know because Karan hasn’t taken the feed down yet (although you notice it has changed perspective (camera?)), and watch her as she walks up the path to your front door. She’s wearing a knee length dress and pretty white flats. She’s got a medium sized navy blue bag over her right shoulder and under her arm. Her hair is also much straighter than it was last night/this morning, wrapped casually in a side ponytail on her opposite shoulder.

You are Michelle St. Claire, and today is your second day on the job.

Well, sort of. After a busy day yesterday executing a handful of teenagers in a way that would make the islamists blush (never thought THAT would happen…), today you clocked into the office only to be given the day off.

Cool. Turns out your house has its own dedicated AI unit which is also apparently called a muse. Who knew. You didn’t. What do you do know is Karan is a chatty bitch.

Wow. And...there’s definitely way more volume that what was there yesterday.

You run your fingers through your hair a few times. It’s longer than regulation, now, but...still. You might as well be wearing a small animal compared to that.

Christ.

You hate your fucking Army pixie cut.

Life isn’t fucking fair. You got shot in the fucking face, you don’t deserve this.

Wendy makes a face, sending you back into reality. The lighting isn’t the best, and the way she has her shoulders turned and face away suggests that even on a day off she’s at least a little careful (paranoid.) about how much she shows.

No idea what that face was, though. She rings the doorbell and stands stiffly as she waits.

You shout, “COMING!”

You’re not actually sure if she can hear you across the house and through a wall(door), and your back is turned to the video. You unlock it and pull it open.

Wendy says, “I was like halfway sure you just made some shit up while I was driving here but ho-lee shit Michelle this is insane!

Also, I brought wine.”

She nudgers her bag a few times.

“For later, obviously. I’m not going to live through three months of shooting and being shot at only to end up spray painting a tree with my brain.”

You say, “Makes sense.”

It really does.

“Sooo…,” Wendy says as she looks at the inside of the house.

Oh, right. Manners. You step out of the way and say, “Sorry. Not used to having guests. Or a house. Or a door.”

You move towards to side to let her in.

“Thanks. Show me around?”

“Sure!”

You lead her towards the kitchen and Wendy pulls out two bottles of (pink) wine and sets them in the refrigerator, and then you give Wendy an abbreviated tour of the one you just got earlier today. You end it on the balcony looking east.

“This is amazing Michelle. Doesn’t it bother you though? All the rich people and trying to look normal and everything? I mean, not that you’re a serial killer or anything but...I saw your barcodes and infantry tattoos and, you know....”

Her voice trails off into silence.

You kinda do. Although you didn’t know she saw them.

Also, regarding our muse. I'm thinking we had one in the military - it makes sense for a tactical network to have a rapid-response middleman/call router.

which is why we find our current one grating as all hell

“Thanks, but I’m sure. I’m the one driving and shit, so...yeah.

“Oh. Okay.”

This got kind of weird.

“So...any ideas on what stores we’re going to?”

That’s kind of better.

“There’s this trendy-ish kind of place that’s like twenty or thirty minutes east of us towards. You wave it away dismissively. “Neither do I. Don’t worry about it. Better than, you know ...work stuff.”

You were going to go into detail about having to wipe idol juice off your boots. You still could.

Wendy relaxes some, putting more weight on her arms and the small wall between you and a long fall down to the beach below.

“Thanks. Sometimes I forget how to be people. Skyler and I had been on the job for almost forty eight hours already before you showed up, and then we had that entire huge thing we had to deal with too.

So...yeah. I need this too. Ready to go?”

You do a quick pocket check. Wallet, phone, …

oh, yeah. That’s all you have in the first place.

“Ok, yeah, I’m ready.”

Wendy looks at you, not quite believing. “You don’t a purse or a bag or anything?”

“...No?”

“Because god also wants us to look fabulous. I notice you’re not actually saying no, though.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Shut up and get in the car.”

“Fiiiiiiiine.”

You tell Karan to lock up and that you’ll be back...whenever.

Wendy unlocks her car and the both of you get in. Although, in your case, it’s more like “sink in.”

“Jesus, girl. I know why you live in that tiny house now.”

Wendy grins. “I like stuff. Unlike, say, someone else in this car who has a house with nothing in it.”

“Oh shut up.”

Wendy laughs and pulls out of the drive and onto the road.

She said twenty, thirty minutes west, inland.

Yeah...no. You’ve been driving north for about twenty five before Wendy says, “We’re almost here. I’d say don’t look or say anything poor but...yeah.”

She makes some sad looking eyes at you as she looks you over head to toe.

“It’s fine though, I’m in there a lot. So, anyways, I’m not letting you walk out without at least a decent bag or purse. If you want a wallet or something that’s cool too, but being bagless is unacceptable. Although honestly I’d have have like a small clutch and then something nice you can keep in your pocket if you’re going all high speed low drag or whatever.

Anyways do you want, like, something big like mine that’s kind of biggish or are you a minimalist kind of girl? I guess there’s stuff in between but generally you’re either at one end or the other.”

“Of course you fucking do.”

Who’s the one laughing now?

“Just be easy? Whole day two of the job thing means I don’t have much cash, and I kind of spent a lot on the security deposit on first month’s rent…”

“Fine, fine. I already have a few ideas, so I’ll just pull a few together and you can pick one or whatever. Just don’t look at the really nice Hermes bags and whatever because then you’ll want one and you can’t afford one.”

You sulk at that.

“Cheer up, you’ll feel better once you stop looking like shit. Look good, feel good and whatever. Totally true.”

She pulls off into a smaller cross street, and again into a smaller one that leads into an average looking underground parking lot, and turns the car off.

“Shop’s upstairs on the second floor, so..let’s go.”

She locks the car after you’re out and leads you towards a stairwell and through the fire door on the second floor (from the markings you’re in B). It seems this is the only access, along with an elevator that must be somewhere else in the parking lot and whatever floor 1 is. Lobby, you guess.

It’s clearly oriented like that, anyways, since there’s a very large plate glass wall with two large glass double doors swung open, presumably locked in place.

Wendy leads you in. “Hey Clarissa.”

That must be the name of the girl behind the long black counter with lots of polished metal on it.

“Oh, hi Wendy! You look great! Although your bag STILL won’t be here for another few weeks…”

“I’m not here for me, I’m here for her.”

She points at you in a way that feels unflattering.

Clarissa stares at you. “Oh. Are you sure you took her to the right spot? I don’t think I have anything, you know...for homeless people.”

“Seriously? I’m right here.”

Wendy laughs, again. “We work together. She just started yesterday. Wherever she’s from she’s fresh from it and doesn’t even have a bag, so…”

Clarissa says “Sorry, sorry...you just, you know…”

She waves a limp listed hand at you. “You know.”

Wendy says, “You’ve had your fun. She’s seen some shit.”

“Sorry, sorry. What’s she - you? - looking for?”

“She said mediumish and I see a few things so let me just grab them real quick and she can take a look at them on the counter.”

She fucks off towards the store, and you watch her go from the counter. It’s bigger than you though, and one of the walls is also all glass, looking towards a street with a lot of people but not so many cars on it.

She comes back in a few minutes with a selection of three and lays them on the table, obviously looking quite proud of herself.

“Prices on the tag and in dollars, obviously. So?”

You know, this doesn’t feel so bad. It actually feels...kind of nice between your arm and torso.

Wendy notices and looks smug about it.

“Oh shut up.”

The two of you get back into her car, and she leaves the way she came.

“The music on the radio, isn’t that-”

“Yeah...it’s from work.”

Ick.

“Hey, don’t look at me like that. It’s catchy and commercial free for employees.”

You wonder if you should roll your eyes or not, but the radio stays on for the entire trip to the mall you wanted to go to in the first place.

She swoops gracefully into a parking stall, underneath a young looking tree.

“Paper. goddamned. plates, Wendy”

Wendy raises her hands and backs off. “Ok, ok, You can eat like a child too.”

“Oh fuck you.”

She shuts up, but looks smug about it.

Skank.

She only makes a few snide remarks as you buy the rest of your things. You’ve decided to keep the modern sort of theme with everything you bought, with a lot of black wood (not ebony, but…) and aluminum and steel.

Except for your dining table. That’s made out of a walnut sort of brown wood that’s apparently handmade in Maine from driftwood.

Wendy thought it was stupid but Wendy can go fuck herself, you have excellent taste.

Your bed is a low, black framed with what you thought was a supremely comfortable foam mattress, with high thread count sheets to match (not dark colored ones, though...you’ve had enough of seeing stains on navy and black sheets).

You picked up a fairly simple TV (it doesn't even project a hologram!) and a black wooden cabinet for all the bits and bobs to go, but Wendy said you should get a real stereo.

There’s a whole bunch of other shit too, but the only one you care about are a pair of lounge chairs for the back deck. They’re even hydrophobic, so that’s cool.

Oh. And you bought a couch.

You also did some real fucking damage on your bank account. The TV by itself was 500 bucks, and the bed and mattress was 800 for the pair. Combined with the rest of what you ordered, you’re out nearly eight grand.

Everything else is photography.

Idols...honestly? I'm not even sure I'd describe what they look like. They're more like trash you need to take out to the dumpster or a particularly chatty dog in terms of how they fit into Michelle's narrative.

They're there, but...unless Michelle finds them interesting, in some way, they won't get much screen-time aside from being shot at.

Kind of my philosophy about this is I think I should describe how the characters look (when they're narratively important enough), rather than what they look like.

Except for Michelle, anyways.

it might seem a little pedantic at 2 AM (or later), but I think letting everyone imagine the characters differently makes everyone a little happier than if I just arbitrarily assigned Wendy or Skyler or Nakamara a face.

But you need to know, for sure, and move your nose down closer to your underarm an- WHOA.

Ok. Wow.

You run a hand through your hair and...ewww ew ew ew ew ew. there’s something under your fingernail.

You play it cool and just stick your hands in the pockets of your pants.

“See?”

“Oh my god I’m disgusting.”

She closes the gap between you the two of you and wraps an arm over your shoulder. She’s really not any (much, at least) taller than you, but her wingspan seems to be longer than it should…

“Not disgusting, just...not clean, and stinking of powder and idol juice and terror and panic and adrenaline.

Look, everything is over here. ...how old are you anyways?”
You thought you felt a little ashamed before, but, nope. You look down for what feels like a long time.

“Michelle?”

“...Nineteen.”

“No shit?”

You nod.

“Ho-lee shit. That explains some shit I guess.

Anyways, all of that shit’s over there so let’s just...I don’t fucking know. I’ll think of something.”

Can we give Karan an android body? That seems like a fun idea with absolutely no potential to backfire whatsoever.

That'd probably cost a lot of money. Like...many years, probably.

Totally no way it'd ever go wrong, though. stupid insect

Just keep doing what you are doing, I kind of like seeing a different writing style than the "standard" for these quests. Given how we executed idols without much remorse, can we not have cute images? It's kind of a mood whiplash.

Also can you set up a pastebin or something for quick references? Like relationships, her fundings, weapon loadout, goals and important (to Michelle) events (killed some idols, got a new house/car, accept mission (details), etc). Thanks!

Thanks pal. I like it when I get (positive) feedback. It makes my tummy feel all warm and tingly.

As for your second request...I will look into it.

Finances have been added to my second post status report/twitter-archive spam/etc, so that's there.

I will investigate some options for more fidelity of information.

I just got out of some meetings at work that dragged on for longer than should be legal and missed the second half of the thread, but thanks for the thread OPFOR, I'm loving this when I can make it.
