You wish Nakurtum were here to help. The ground groans and buckles, and rocks tumble down from the steep mountains on either side of this narrow valley. The statue of Ishtar you salvaged from the temple, the one wearing the real equipment, wobbles. The roof of the partially sunken temple caves in , and the ground churns around it. A mass of earth and rubble rises up.

Your party of pyramid guards ready their spears and silently look to you for orders.

"Get out of here! This is something I have to do myself!" Still wracked with guilt over the loss of Pazur-Ea, you don't want any more humans to die under your command.

There's a loud groaning sound like a dying elephant. Within the shifting, growing pile of rubble, a chain snaps, and one end of it goes flying before striking the earth and burying itself in a straight line. Then another chain snaps, and another, sending stray broken black links into the air. Dirt sloughs off the hulking form of what turns out to be a giant maggot. This one is larger than the last one you fought, with spikes and armor plates chained to its rubbery hide. There's also an absurdly tiny black crown chained to its head. With a roar of triumph, it advances - straight for the statue of Ishtar.

You waste no time with words. Before it can shuffle its massive bulk within reach of the statue of Ishtar, you charge it and leap onto it. Like the previous maggot-thing, its hide is thick and rubbery and almost impossible to penetrate. You decide to start by cracking open some of the chains holding its stuff on. The chains are made of something strange, some metal darker and harder than bronze, but they've also been eaten away by the ages. A link bends past the breaking point in your claws, then another, and a spiked plate falls to earth.

The maggot howls and snarks at you as i tries to shake you off. It speaks with multiple flapping blue tongues. "Hlrlrlrl... thls ls nln lf ylr lfflr, fllsh-lltr! Thllt spllr ls mlln! Mlln!"

You crawl up its elaborately decorated hide with your skittering legs until you reach a spot where you can more easily keep your balance as you ride out its wild bucking and flailing. You tug as hard as you can at its tough hide, then stab at the strained area between your claws with your tail. Your long, daggerlike stinger bounces off of it a few times before coming in at just the right angle and lodging itself in the maggot's body. You inject Slow Death into wha you hope is a sufficiently deep puncture in the monster's back.

When the maggot reaches the statue of Ishtar, it bows its repulsive head almost as if in reverence. You see what it's really up to, though, when it reaches out with its many branching tongues to smash Ishtar's right arm off and grasp the ancient spear it once held. With that done. It tries to defeat you simply by rolling over and crushing you under its titanic bulk. "Hlllghrghlhhhhg!"

You are the fast scorpion. When it heaves its body onto its side in an attempt to crush you, you lean down low and adroitly grasp onto one clawful of rubbery pale flesh after another to help pull your way across the giant maggot's body.

It's not fast enough, however, and while you're still skittering the whole thing rolls on top of you. You don't take its entire weight, as much of it is spread across the ground around you, but it's enough to knock the wind out of you, bruise the back of your head, and press open the old wounds on your carapace.

> You now have 1 wound.

The maggot raises its head and glares down at you with the spear in its mandibles. "Lggghh... yll stllng mll! Yll wll knll ll nll mllnllng llv plln! Bllg fllr mllcll!"

"Isn't it obvious? Yes, I'm hers. And now you're poisoned, so stand aside." You start to slowly advance toward the remains of the statue.

"LHHHGHLLGGGGSHLLLGH..." The maggot snarls and brings its tail around to smack you right in the human half. It has a ways to go, so you have a little time to leap out of the way.

You leap backward and roll over a couple times on the ground. The maggot's tail whizzes over you, missing by just a few inches. You turn tail and get it to chase you up the valley. You see that your men are watching from the opening of the pass and trying to keep the pack animals fro getting spooked. They're failing.

You lead the maggot away from the men, toward the opposite end of the pass. It might be able to catch you if it just goes straight, but it sways from side to side to knock over every boulder or rocky ridge nearby. It's a very upset creature. Its crown is tilting low on its head, and black corruption starts to spread visibly across its back, a sign that your poison is doing its work.

You are the acrobatic scorpion, leaping over boulders and rockslides to stay a few steps ahead of the giant maggot. When you come to a straightaway, though, you feel a terrible presence looming over you. As the maggot brings its head down, it stabs you with the spear right around where your carapace opens for your left legs. Though the day is warm, the magic steel is cold. You wonder if your poor chitinous hide will ever be as strong as it once was, with all the abuse it's been through lately. It's certainly not as pretty. It could be worse, though. The maggot seems overly proud of his reclaimed possession and ignorant that he'd probably do more damage with his jaws alone.

> You now have 2 wounds.

You see that the hot, pounding blood of the beast is an excellent carrier for Slow Death. Black ribbons spread and dance under its translucent white skin. It starts to get sluggish, no longer bothering to hold its proud, inhuman head up. "Llgh... Ll lmm ll kllng. Shll cllnllt bllk mll..."

"You must know now that death is near. I suppose you might kill me, but why not tell me your tale instead before you die? I could tell it to those who would listen and remember."

The maggot appears to chuckle, but maybe it's not a real chuckle, because the next moment he's vomiting black sludge into the young grass. He releases his tongue's hold on the fine spear. "Well, uh... I'll tell your story. Ishtar has a lot of stories like that already, though. May I ask your name?"

"Llt's.. KFF! KFF!" The maggot hacks up more black filth, some of which has important-looking bits of flesh floating in it. After a few more spasms, the thing keels over dead, and its human-sized crown slumps loose from its chain and touches the offal-slickened earth.

You take the crown, but you don't put it on. If the day ever comes when you feel the need to wear a crown, you'll wear the smaller, less fancy crown you got from the smaller, less fancy giant maggot.

Though you had two whole goats just yesterday, an instinct stirs inside you that tells you that you cannot let all this good meat go to waste. This is your kill. Yours! Your own! Not for scavengers! For you, beast hunter, spawn of Tiamat!

Like the previous maggot, this thing has a slightly gamey taste and tough texture to it, but flesh just seems to melt in your mouth when your feeding instinct kicks in, and you know that you're immune to your own venom. The Slow Death even helps flavor the meat, adding a tangy, spicy streak to what would otherwise be a relatively poor meal.

When you awaken from your feeding frenzy, your men are watching you, again from a safe distance. They have the mules tied up to a tree very, very far away from you.

"Oh! Hello, boys!" You smile. "I won the fight. Don't worry, I'm not going to snap at you. I'm back in control again." You do feel lucid. You also feel very full, maybe more than ever before. You look back at yourself. Your scorpion half is bulging, pushing the shattered armor plates further apart than you've seen them go before. Even your human stomach feels unusually full. Do you even still have a stomach there?

"Just help patch me up. After that, we head west as fast as we can. I wanna catch up to Nakurtum."

Nakurtum and the nagas have been traveling for almost the entire day while you and the pyramid guards were excavating the temple, but maybe they're not going very fast.

> Put on the armor, glove, and spear. Travel as fast as you can, even if it means leaving the guards behind.

An army at our backs will make hostilities less likely to be engaged than a lone monster charging them at top speed (from their point of view).

Not putting on the equipment last time was a mistake.

You put on the armor and glove, then lift the spear. The spearhead is made of that strange black metal with blue ripples in it. If the gouge in your back is any indication, it's quite sharp. The glove is a little dusty but very warm and smooth, and the armor makes you feel a little rush of confidence when you put it on. Even though you body is changing and you're in a fair amount of pain, for just a moment you feel as lovely as Ishtar herself. You wonder if that was because of magic or not.

You proceed faster than the guards can keep up with, running by night as well as by day. Travel helps take your mind off the pain, though the sense of uncomfortable tightness under your skin only gets more severe.

You look around for tracks. You see what might be giant snake tracks, sweeping dust in wide arcs in one direction, then the other. When the tracks leave the dry trail and toward a tiny collection of huts in the distance, you follow.

It doesn't take long to find Nakurtum and the snake-people out in the open by the town well. The snake-people are trying to question a young woman, exchanging basic words in their respective native languages. The woman looks frightened, but each snake-person's attendant fireball is kept small and hovering behind its master's back. Nakurtum is using her knife to pick her teeth. She looks bored.

You approach with your spear pointed down and your gloved left hand in the air. "Hello! It's me, Hunzuu! I, uh, I come in peace!"

Nakurtum stands up with a smile and sheathes her knife. "Hey there, Zuu! It's good to see you! Hey, nice stuff! Did you bring my axe?"

"Uh... no... But come here, you!" You wrap a claw around her and hug her warm, muscular body. When your hand brushes her, you see a brief vision - a vision of yourself. It fades in an instant. You're not sure what it means. "What are these snake guys up to?"

"Scouts, I guess? I think they're trying to learn our language, but they're doing a shit job of it. I don't trust them. Advance scouts for a snake army, I'm sure. If they were diplomats, they'd have a lot less... fireballs."

"Well, if we're lucky, they'll waste their time talking to trappers and dirt farmers and never find anything important. Let them know that we're leaving."

Nakurtum waves to the snake-woman. "Hello

The snake-woman says something totally unintelligible in her own language. These monsters seem to talk so fast, you have trouble even making out the individual sounds. Nakurtum points to herself and then to the horizon. She speaks condescendingly loud and slow. "ME GO NOW. YOU PRETTY GOOD, BUT WATCHING YOU MAKE ME GO SLEEPY. NAKURTUM GO BYE-BYE NOW."

THe snake-woman must know that Nakurtum was talking down to her, because she makes a cute little sour expression before shooing Nakurtum away as though to bid her good riddance. A male snake-person who was basking in the sun nearby takes more of an interest in you in particular, but he doesn't try to strike up a conversation, just watching you carefully as you depart.

It's another week or so to get back to Ligish. You don't think you can take that long. You feel ready to explode! You don't feel hungry anymore, even though you haven't eaten since you gorged on the maggot flesh two days ago, and sometimes large patches of your skin go numb for several seconds at a time before you shake them awake.

You decide that Nakurtum doesn't need to know. You approach her as she's digging a firepit and looking out to the east, probably wondering when the guards are going to catch up to her with her axe. "Nakurtum?"

She looks back at you with a smile. "Yeah, kiddo?"

"Good night."

"Good night! We'll be sleeping in tomorrow. I want my axe back!"

You dig a deep, deep hole. SOmetimes you only dis a shallow burrow that you can sort of only half fit into, so your scorpion tail pokes out, but not this time. You want room to work with. Just as you're scooping up two clawfuls of dirt and tossing them aside, you feel something split. It's on your back - your human back. Your skin is incredibly dry. You can still feel with it, just a little, but for some reason having it tear open entirely causes no pain.

You've killed a lot of people, and, if you have to be truthful with yourself, the nature of your mind has changed to make you comfortable with bloodshed, even a little excited by it. But you take Nakurtum's advice to heart. Your feelings are not your destiny. You can choose to make peace instead. You don't want to be Hunzuu the Perfidious, tosser of centaurs and shameless war criminal. You want to be Hunzuu the Merciful. You still remember the Turtaki slaves who first called you that. You remember the poor Turtaki orphan girl you took under your claw for an afternoon. You hope she's all right.

> Your venom has changed from Slow Death to Hunzuu's Mercy. This venom is non-lethal and causes weakness and unconsciousness in lesser creatures.
> You are no longer immune to Slow Death.
> Your Brawling has gone up from 4 to 5.
> Your Toughness has gone up from 4 to 5.
> Your Reflexes has gone up from 2 to 3.

With those encouraging thought in mind, you start rubbing against the walls of your burrow. You feel the gash in your back grow. You feel your tissues swell and close up the gouges in your scorpion half. One plate of chitin pops out of place, then another. Air touches parts of you that have never felt the breeze before. You pull your arms out of your arms, like you were taking off a dress. You look at the brittle mass of humanoid skin in your arms. Yo never realized how many scars you'd had back there before.

Your scorpion legs and tail are the hardest parts, but you've got all night. You go at your own pace and wiggle your way out of one old leg at a time. You feel soft, vulnerable, sensitive all over, but also like you're realizing your potential to become stronger.

> Keep your old chitin. Maybe someone can make something out of it.

We'll toss our human skin on someone while yelling "oogaboogabooga" at the very least

And there's all sorts of things you can make out of an giant scorpion shell.

You leave the burrow, but you don't fill the hole back in again. Maybe the sloughed-off pieces of yourself can be put to use somehow. You hate to bury something that looks so much like you. You see and feel that your new exoskeleton is extremely tender. It will take time to harden. Until then, you'll be kind of a sitting duck.

> You are currently Soft-Shelled.

But goodness, look how big you are! You stand a couple of feet taller than before, just barely big enough to squeeze through the doors inside the pyramid without breaking the frame. Your claws are set wider, and your scorpion extremities have thick, sinewy muscle ready under the soft shell, bristling to be put into action. Your hair is now very short and bristly now, no longer the chin-length black silk that you used to have to comb the dirt out of after sleeping outside. And hey, you have tits! Tits! You were wondering about those!

You wrap your discarded dress around your chest and poke the sleeping Nakurtum with a tender claw. "Hey, Nakurtum! Look at me!" Your voice is a tiny bit deeper, more like an adolescent than an innocent little girl.

Nakurtum kips up from her sleeping mat and draws her knife just out of force of habit. "Wha?! Who's there?" When she realizes who owns that voice, she falls back onto her mat again. "Zuu? Fuck, kiddo, you had me scared! How'd you change like that?!"

You giggle. "It's how scorpions grow! It's normal. I wanted to surprise you!"

When she notices your clumsily bound breasts, she points at them with her thumb. "You are way too young for those! Put those back immediately!"

You laugh. "I don't know how! But you seem to do all right with them, so I'll make do. Anyway, what I'm really worried about is this." You poke your carapace with your claw, and both bend a little. Your chitin is firm enough to hold your insides in while you move, but will be no good in battle until it hardens.

Nakurtum nods and watches the tender shell catch the moonlight. It looks moist. "Huh. Yeah, that is a problem. I guess Ninlil and that giant bitch will have to pick up the slack while you get that sorted out. And me, of course. I dunno if mere humans are worth the trouble anymore against monsters, but that won't stop me from trying! Seriously, though, you look good. Beautiful, in fact. Okay, that's definitely doable. I agree with the earlier anon, we need to improve our speed and find a good way to restrain enemies.

>>31375498
>Sneak into Ligish under cover of darkness, so people won't see that you're soft.

We'll make our grand appearance later, when we're really into our own.
>>
in short, this means that next time we meet that centaur, he'll do as he threatened.
>>
>>31375651
What did he threaten?
>>
>>31375688
to ravish us when we grew up or something.
>>
>>31375688
that if we were older, he'd have grabbed our tits.
>>
>>31375651
oh man, old Soul-of-Lightning
or something.

Actually, now that you bring it up, do you think the scorpion boy is more likely to come see us now that we are beautiful
>>
>>31375789
I think we'll have to wait like four, maybe five years before he comes a-knocking.
>>
>>31375789
Does he even know about us?
>>
>We have boobs.
Time to /ss/ that other scorpikid.
>>
>>31375819
we can't exactly /ss/ him, because I think we are still technically the same age as him
>>
>>31375852
How old do we look, though? 16-17?
>>
>>31375894
I'd assume somewhere within 3 years of looking 13, so 16 max.

but what do I know, I'm not a scorpologist.

Your dress doesn't fit right, and yo're worried that your enemies will realize that you're weak and take the opportunity to hurt you and those you love. But more importantly, your dress doesn't fit right! You must be pretty!

Fortunately, hardly anyone notices you in your late-night procession to the pyramid. Dadanum and the other guards compliment your appearance, of course.

When you reach the hall leading to your bedroom, you hear a child wailing and hollering.

You flow the sound, very concerned. For a moment you're even terrified. You open to door to Rabi-Tammuz's workshop to see Meluku throwing a tantrum and Rabi-Tammuz looking exasperated. "I DON'T WANNA GO TO BED!" Meluku exclaims. "You're just a slave, so you can't make me! I can do whatever I want! I could even be a god if I wanted. And I wanna stay up more!"

Rabi-Tammuz weakly waves at you. "Hunzuu. You've grown."

You smile and nod. "That's right! And that means I'll need all new dresses! And kerchiefs to go with the new dresses, and new padded lining for the new armor I'll be getting, and some blankets, too, please, because my new skin is very sensitive! And look, no scars! Thanks, Rabi-Tammuz, you're the best!"

Rabi-Tammuz rolls his eyes. "You know, I'm beginning to think that this slavery thing isn't all it's cracked up to be."

"Oh, but I got you a gift!" You reveal the arm you'd been holding behind your back. Draped over it is a largely intact, scar-dappled, light brown Hunzuu hide.

Rabi-Tammuz's tired eyes light up. "Mistress, I'm sorry I ever doubted you. This is... the most thoughtful gift anyone's ever given me willingly..." He takes the skin reverently and spreads it out. Meluku looks on curiously. Rabi-Tammuz;s voice gets all choked up. "Thank you! Sincerity tastes so odd in my mouth, but thank you!"

He's a little creepy, but he's behaved perfectly for months. You let him have his moment of joy.

Thank you for running Anu!

Heh.

Thanks for the thread, Anu!
>>
>>31375940
Good thread. Thanks Anu.
>>
>>31375940
rabbni I have no idea what you are going to do with that thing and even thinking about it creeps the hell out of me.

Enjoy.

Thanks for running anu, fun thread.
>>
>>31375940
Good shit Anu, it was nice participating Our schedules have clashed a lot in the last couple of weeks. The last half of the semester in college is always a bitch.
>>
>>31375852
He's 10. You're 13 but currently look about 16.
>>
so, is our hair going to grow back, or will we just have to deal with shorthair?
>>
>>31376075
we've got a long while 'till our next moulting I assume.

also, impress all the priests. (worry the gold priest might hit on you one day)
>>
>>31376098
I think we already look old enough for him to hit on us. Of course, he knows that we're technically still thirteen, so he might not depending on how much his lower head takes mental age into consideration.
>>
>>31376081
It'll grow back. New skin doesn't come packaged with much hair but can grow hair just as well as old skin.
>>
>>31376147
well, I imagine most of our friends will get a kick out of the shenanigans to ensue.

We'll have to build a scorpion-hutt somewhere before next moult.
>>
>>31376147
Ancient societies tend to have a much younger age of majority. Perhaps the code of Hammurabi includes the "Grass on the Field, Play Ball" rule.
>>
>>31376191
Did ancient societies even have a concept of pedophilia? Younger was better when you wanted kids.
>>
I worry about a few things, like ishtar and betrayal.

Also I am hopeful for htings, like meeting snake folk, and scorpi-friend. Also visiting the city we were at war with.
>>
>>31375940
thx 4 runin budi gud thred
>>
>>31376226
Well, not TOO young. But the general consensus was that if she was capable of producing a child, she was old enough by definition.
>>
>>31376191
I'm reading a translation of the Code right now. Crikey, but it's a draconic one.
>>
>>31376568
You should read modern law sometime, especially common law.
>>
>>31376593
Yeah, but the most common punishment today is a jail/prison sentence. It's DEATH DEATH DEATH everywhere in the Code.

Reminds of that one planet in TNG where the punishment for any crime was death.
>>
>>31376568
>>31376593
>>31376621
huh.
>>
>>31376621
Who has the time and resources for prisons? They may not have even invented locks yet.
>>
>>31376621
Well death was cheap back then.
The problem is trying to give someone a death sentence is more expensive than just jailing them for 20 years or more.
>>
>>31376659
>>31376665
Point. Also there's 288 laws and I'm not even a quarter of the way through.
>>
>>31376676
>If a son of a paramour or a prostitute say to his adoptive father or mother: "You are not my father, or my mother," his tongue shall be cut off.

Hunzuu had best watch her sass-mouth.
>>
>>31377154
Except she doesn't have an adoptive father or mother.
>>
>>31377154
oh shit.
Thankfully, we've not been sassing much. Have we sassed the priests?

The priests are our adoptive parents, right?
>>
>>31377246
We've probably sassed the priests. I guess we can go through the archives to check. I think the blood priest is technically our guardian, or however that works.

Based on the laws that come after that law, tough, I'm guessing the purpose of the law is to discourage the bastards of important people from trying to claim an inheritance from their biological parents.
>>
>>31377398
ah, well.

Though I don't think we've actually given much sass to the blood priest. We've pranked him and stolen from him, but not sassed.
>>
>>31377430
I think that more than counts as sass, anon.
>>
>>31377448
look, with ancient draconian legal systems, these distinctions are probably important.
>>
>>31377476
The stealing part is probably enough to warrant punishment.
>>
>>31377489
very true. He would be well within his rights to do some parent-type stuff about that.

I don't think he realized that if he grounds us, we will very probably feel bad and then stay in our room until we're ungrounded.
>>
>>31377545
We never did tell him the truth about the big prank, did we?
>>
>>31377604
We'll have to once our chitin finishes drying.
>>
>>31377604
>>31377655
geez, this isn't going to be pleasant.
>>
>>31377717
We don't even have being an adorable little girl to fall back on, and I doubt tits are going to work on the Blood Priest.
>>
So when's the next thread? Does Anu usually give the date in advance?
>>
>>31377731
ah jeez.
I guess we'll have to try tearing up and running to our room.
>>31377748
Only sometimes. Other times it's on the twitter.
I hope this weekend.
>>
>>31377779
It's not on the Twitter.
>>
>>31377805
it won't be released for a while probably
>>
>>31377779
Like I said, we aren't an adorable little girl anymore. We'll have to patiently sit there and listen to him ranting at us.

On the other hand, I'd love to see his reaction to anyone hitting on us now that we're a hot teenage girl.

saged comment so as to not res the thread, but to remind me later:

If meluku is throwing tantrums about not going to bed, he isn't NEARLY tired enough. We should get him in some kind of training or education to wear him out a little.
