You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, aliens who dominate much of Europe and Asia and who threaten to exterminate the human race. You were assigned to Project Round Table, the spearhead of the European Union's, but a series of unexpected battles and political backstabbing blunted your momentum and severely limited your resources for the foreseeable. You've begun to recover, but getting back to your full strength will take time.

Right now, you're doing basic maintenance work in the cockpit of your prototype EF-2000 Typhoon. You don't have any complaints about its performance, but the operating system can be difficult to deal with. The TSFs that the command unit links to varies from mission to mission, so there are occasional problems with optimization. It's just one of those things engineers and test pilots are less likely to think of or notice, but that's crucial for pilots who actually fight.

A knock on your TSF distracts you form your work. Elaine's standing just outside your cockpit.

"Good morning," she says. "I just got our new orders. The forces in Italy need reinforcements, so we're sending Arthur squadron. We leave by carrier tomorrow."

"Sounds interesting." You quickly finish up your current debugging session. "I heard Italy was under more pressure than were are, so the fights should be interesting."

"'Interesting' isn't how I would describe it," Elaine says. "If Italy goes down, Africa will probably go down with it, so take this seriously. And whatever you do, don't get Vivian killed. She's nice to cuddle with."

Elaine leaves to check up on her Tornado. You have a day left, so you might as well take care of some sidejobs you've been neglecting.

You decide to drop by Mary's office. You know she has work to do, but you also remember what the hangars were like back when she was distracted. TSF performance wasn't affected, but it was a mess to deal with. You handle most of the detailed maintenance on your Typhoon - technically, no one else is qualified - but when it comes to basic maintenance, you need a dedicated pit crew. You're not sure if you're willing to trust a bunch of complete strangers with your personal TSF.

You find Mary in her office, speaking on the phone with someone.

"Yes, you can reduce our deliveries until further notice. One of our squadrons is being redeployed." She motions for you to enter when she sees you and you take a seat in front of her. "Just make sure the manufacturing equipment gets here on time, including spare parts." There is a short part. "We can deal with the production contracts later. Good bye."

Without waiting for a reply, she hangs up the phone and smiles at you.

"Good morning, Julian," she says. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?"

"I mostly just wanted to see you," you say. "But I was also curious about your plans. I know you're busy here, but..."

"You don't want to let strange engineers near your new TSF?" Mary giggles softly. "To be honest, I haven't decided yet. There is a lot of work that I need to oversee personally, but I also have some projects that I can delegate. I was going to ask for your opinion on the matter?"

>(cont.)
>>
>>31307413
"Are you sure that's all right?" You raise an eyebrow. "This is a little above my paygrade."

"I must admit, I was originally attracted to you because I was desperate for any kind of human affection." Mary's smile doesn't waver, but there's no dissonance between her expression and her words. "But after seeing your performance here, my interest isn't quite so shallow as that anymore. You have a great deal of potential and you've made significant contributions to my research. If there's anyone I should consult, it's you."

"You should continue your research while we're gone," you say. "At least, if you think you can handle it."

Her smile wavers for an instant and her eyes flicker towards one of her desk drawers. It's probably were she keeps her sidearm.

"That... I'll be fine," she says. "I have a feeling things will turn out all right if we keep moving forward."

"Good," you say. "What will you be working on, exactly?"

"My grandfather helped design an engine based on G-elements," Mary says. "It worked, but it was also extremely lethal to its pilots. I should be able to build a functioning remote-controlled prototype in a short amount of time, but it will take much longer to figure out how to regulate properly."

You can't help but wince at the thought. Sure, test pilots are near the bottom of the ladder unless they were reassigned from combat postings because they were too fucking insane for their comrades to keep up with them, but they're at the bottom because the only dangers they face are their own fuck-ups. Getting killed because the engineers made a lethal engine isn't a pleasant thought.

"What about the Excalibur and the Sangreal?"

"They're... all right, they're extremely behind schedule." Mary can't quite meet your gaze. She's like a child who was caught skipping out on her homework. "The Sangreal's components are all mostly done, so my team should be able to finish it by the time you get back. As for the Excalibur, I can manufacture the components while you're gone and we can finish it together with the Black Widow and Berkut schematics you brought back."

The Sangreal is almost done, and it won't need as much time as the other two things.
We'll work on the engine together after that.

At the very least we're friends so just seeing a person who had a gun to their head does inspire a little worry.
>>
>>31308158
"I look forward to finalizing the Excalibur," you say.

"Oh, we won't be finalizing the Excalibur for a while yet," Mary says. "At best, it'll be a 3rd generation TSF and the plan is to work on the Excalibur until it reaches the 5th generation. Well, thanks to your work, it'll still be the European Union's first stealth-capable TSF. That's enough of an achievement for now."

You shrug.

"As an engineer, I must approve of the development of stealth functions, but as a pilot, I must say they aren't very practical. It's not like we can jam the BETA."

"Perhaps, perhaps not," Mary says. "But the BETA aren't our only enemy, are they?"

You think back to those Russians you fought. You remember what Mary told you about the factions backing Alternative V and how far they're willing to go. It's unpleasant, but she's right. Before you can use the Excalibur to end the BETA, you might have to use it to end World War 3.

You bite your cheek to clear your head. Right now, you have more important things to worry about.

The two of you stand and Mary gives you a tight hug.

"Be careful out there," she says.

"Don't worry, I'll be fine."

>"I'll see you tomorrow."

"Can you drop by my room tonight? Elaine and Vivian will probably be there, so we might as well throw a party."

"I would love to." Mary lets go of you and steps away a little. "Should I bring some of the vodka?"

"Yes, please," you say. "There more illegal, the better."

"It isn't contraband, actually. I just slipped it in when I requested permission to produce unstable substances and other things that I need for my research, but that aren't usually allowed on a military base."

"Thank God for shoddy military bureaucracy then." You wave Mary goodbye. "I'll see you tonight then. I'm on duty for the afternoon."

Which means you get to sit around in a waiting room in case the alarms go off, which is unlikely, according to the most recent BETA movements. Besides, if the EU really needs you in Italy, they're probably not going to risk your life now. There are other squadrons that can take care of things.

All you need to do is sit back and enjoy the cheap office tea.

>Mary Wright has learned Leadership.

Your shift is about what you expected. It's just Arthur squadron killing time and talking about the upcoming mission. There aren't any officers with combat experience in the Mediterranean, so a lot of people are clustered around maps and old reports. You sit down next to Elaine, who's practically napping in her chair.

"Your taking this easy," you say.

"There's no point in making a big deal out of it," she says. "Just treat it like a standard operation."

"I just hope this doesn't fuck us over like our standard operations usually do." You laugh. "We've had a decent run of it for the last few weeks, but it's not going to last."

"The good news is, the bad times don't last either," Elaine says. "I just hope we can get back to conquering the mainland soon. We were supposed to make an aggressive push, but we've just been sitting here."

"It couldn't be help," you say. "That Hive needed to go down and if word had gotten out... You heard about what happened in Yokohama. That could have been us."

"Yeah, I know." Elaine sighs. "Getting bombed by your own allies is a fucked up way for a TSF pilot to die. You'd think humans would be too busy killing aliens to kill each other."

"I wish it was that simple," you say. "But it's not. We just have to fight for humanity and for Earth, no matter who the enemy is."

"I suppose we do," Elaine says. "It's not like it's our fault if idiots and terrorists want to commit suicide by TSF."

"Damn straight." You push yourself off your chair. "I'm going to have a look at the maps. I haven't really caught up with things in Italy."

"Have fun."

You spend the rest of the shift looking at the maps. There is a sliver of the Italian mainland used for forward operating bases, much like the one you established Calais, and a few islands that are used as more stable EU and UN bases. The situation isn't grim, but they're really balanced on the razor's edge. One small slip and the whole thing goes down.

You and Elaine meet Vivian for dinner at the mess. The meat is synthetic, but the potatoes are real and the tea is of good quality for once. The British must really appreciate it.

"By the way," you say, "I invited Mary to come by our room tonight for a farewell party."

"Did she promise to bring vodka," Elaine asks.

"Oh yes." You swallow the rest of your cup of tea. "And apparently, it's all legal."

Elaine pumps her fist in celebration.

"It's too bad Mary won't be joining us," Vivian says. "I can handle most of the command unit's software, but the hardware is still beyond me."

"You'll be fine," you say. "I'll have to personally oversee the Typhoon's maintenance, so just let me know if there are problems."

"Thanks, Julian."

You finish dinner and go back to your room to find Mary leaning against the wall right next to your door. She's holding a bag in a not so subtle way.

"This is going to be a very good night," Elaine says.

"Please don't say things that will make you look like an alcoholic," Vivian says. "And good evening, Mary."

"Thank you." Mary takes the bottle out of her bag. "Shall we get started?"

Elaine unlocks the room and Mary and Vivian let themselves in. Vivian's here often enough that she keeps her toothbrush in the bathroom, but it's been a while since Mary visited. Mary sits next to you on your bed, while Elaine and Vivian sit on Elaine's bed across from you.

"I suppose we should be traditional about this," Mary says as she holds the bottle up to her lips. "For Queen and country!"

Mary tilts the bottle up and helps herself to a generous swill. Then she passes the bottle over to you.

You pass the bottle to Elaine, who takes her own deep gulp before giving the bottle to Vivian. Vivian stares at it a bit, but then she shrugs and helps herself.

You pass the bottle around, pacing yourself just shy of passing out from alcohol poisoning. You manage to get yourself pleasantly buzzed and Mary effortlessly keeps up with you, but Elaine is having trouble maintaining your balance and Vivian, as it turns out, is a very loquacious drunk.

"I swear, this guy would not shut up about his father's knighthood," Vivian says. "It's not like it was *his* knighthood. How many of those does the Queen give out every year anyway?"

"A lot," Elaine says as she takes the bottle from Vivian. "I'm surprised we didn't all get one for Calais, even with the medals."

"I know." Vivian turns to you. "Anyway, Julian. I've been meaning to ask, would you get jealous if Elaine and I had sex?"

Elaine immediately chokes on her drink. Both you and Mary stare at Vivian completely dumbstruck.

"I have to say, given Elaine's general behaviour, I didn't expect this," you say.

"Elaine said she was interested, she just has issues with men because her mother tried to use her as a breeding mare." Vivian waves her arms about in a dismissive fashion. "And I thought if the two of us got along well first, it would make the polygamy easier to figure out later on. You can join in if you want, Mary. I don't mind." She turns over to Elaine, who is now slamming her palm against her forehead. "Elaine, you don't mind if Mary joins us, right?"

You can't help but notice that Mary is slightly blushing, and it doesn't look like the alcohol.

"I'll go along with whatever makes you all more comfortable."

Mary turns her head to look at you. Elaine raises her head to look at you. Vivian starts clapping in celebration.

"You're serious," Elaine says. "Okay. I mean, it's not like I hadn't thought about it."

"I thought about it once or twice as well," Mary says. "I never thought it would actually happen though."

"If you're willing to sort this out amongst yourselves, I won't stop you," you say. "I don't want to go around behind your backs."

"Thanks, Julian," Elaine says. "It means a lot to me that you're being considerate about this."

"I'll start planning the details," Vivian says. "I don't want to cut Mary out, so we'll have to talk things over after we come back. We'll need to think about living arrangements, child rearing, financial arrangements, nationality..."

You have absolutely no idea how the hell Vivian can be so drunk and so coherent at the same time.

Elaine passes the bottle back to Mary and the night goes on until you finally fall asleep.

You take a look at your clock. You need to be on a carrier in about three hours, which means it's time to get up. You ignore the pounding in your head long enough to crawl out of bed.

You see Vivian and Elaine, once again cuddled in Elaine's bed. They're still wearing clothes, so they must not have started on Vivian's polygamy plan yet. As hung over as you are, you clearly remember that part and you have every intention of following through on what you said.

You take your clothes off and head for the shower.

As it turns out, you are not the only who managed to get up and decided to take a shower. Mary is looking at you, covered only in her towel.

"Good morning, Julian," she says.

Knight is my favorite character, I just didn't knew it was going to be for this reason.

"Since you're here, would you mind washing my back?"

Mary looks at you. She blinks once, then twice, then she starts laughing and lets her towel slip. You're still too hung over to really notice.

"I'll take that as a yes," you say.

You turn the hot water on and lean against the wall, headbutting it lightly in case it'll make the pain inside your head slightly less worse. It doesn't work. Mary's hands on your back feel much nicer though.

"If I'd asked you to do this a few months ago, would you have said yes?"

"I think so," Mary says. "But it would have just been desperation, and desperation never ends well for anyone."

"I know what you mean."

You shower in silence for another five minutes and help Mary was her hair and her back. It's surprisingly long and elegant when she lets it down.

Then Elaine barges and kicks you both out.

"Move, move," she says. "We have to get our TSFs ready to board the carrier."

You and Mary casually dry yourselves off next to Vivian as she waits for her own turn in the shower. She doesn't seem bothered by the fact that you were both just in the shower. She just smiles and greets you.

"Good morning," she says. "Except for the hangover, I guess."

"We probably shouldn't have gotten that drunk right before a carrier operation." You put your uniform with your usual urgency. "Are you going to board on TSFs with us?"

"I think so," Vivian says. "I've never been on a carrier before, so I don't want to get seasick."

"We should enjoy the view from the deck," you say. "We might as well make a trip out of this."

"I suppose we could," Vivian says.

"Don't blame me if you vomit off the side of the ship and the navy spends the rest of the trip busting your balls," Elaine says as she comes out of the shower.

Vivian leaves to take her own shower while Elaine gets dressed. You take a look at your clock and figure now would be a good time to get the Typhoon prepared for launch. It'll be hell to pay if your squadron's late because of you.

"I'll go on ahead," you say.

Mary gives you another hug and a light kiss on the cheek.

"We'll work on the Excalibur when we get back," she says. "I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And a few other things."

"I'm sure I will."

You go ahead to the locker room and get changed into your fortified suit. Your Typhoon is waiting for you in the hangar. Some other members of your squadron are there already, but it seems there's plenty of time. The spare weapons and ammunition will be transported separately, but all TSFs are responsible for their standard loadout, so there is some preparation needed and the departure time is coming up fast.

You see Elaine rush in just barely on time to get her Tornado ready to go and Vivian comes up to the Typhoon. You help her into her seat.

"Is this your first carrier operation," she asks.

"I suppose it is," you say. "I was hauled around on boats a few times, but aside from training, I've never been on a carrier."

"Arthur squadron, we are now redeploying." Group captain Hall's voice is broadcast to your TSF. "Follow standard carrier procedures and do not crash."

The vanguard is the last to leave this time. The other squadron TSFs launch and land on the carrier one at a time. It should be possible to launch in pairs, but this isn't an emergency and there's no point in wasting fuel in case someone has to circle the carrier while another TSF lands.

Your own landing is textbook and both you and Vivian disembark for the general briefing. Carriers are gender-segregated to prevent problems. It's actually quite awkward to live with other men again. It reminds you of your days as a cadet more than anything. You're given a brief tour of the carrier and a map so you don't get lost, and then you're off-duty until further notice.

You head for the deck to meet up with Elaine and Vivian. You find them standing near the air control tower. You stand next to them and stare at the coastline of continental Europe. It's too far for you to see clearly, but you can still imagine it.

"Do you think this will be like Calais," you ask.

"Hopefully," Elaine says. "Only without the part where we get cut off."

"No, this won't be anything like Calais," Vivian says. She speaks softly, and her gaze does not waver from the coastline. "This time, I'll be with you."

MUV-LUV ROYAL QUEST: THE DAY AFTER (the party)

Meanwhile, Vivian has found a very interesting report written on official letterhead, entitled A Six-Part Plan to Ensure the Viability of a Polygamous Relationship with Flying Officer Julian Reber, Myself, and Any Number of Interested Parties
by Vivian Knight

"WHAT THE HELL HAVE I WRITTEN? Why... why is it so... huh... wow, from a logistics standpoint, this would actually work. I need to get drunk more often."
>>
>>31313917
pfthahahaha
>>
>>31313917

Mary noticed that small but noticeable amounts of alcohol rations had disappeared.
>>
>>31313917
a normal relationship already got problems in a normal society, not the one in MUV LUV unlimited quest. A threesome relationship is uncharted territory and foursome relationship is gonna be a fucking mess. Jubian better make his plans right because he can't fuck all 3 all the time.
>>
>>31314017
yes he can, and besides, the girls agreed to make it fair and not go behind each others back
>>
>>31314017
Viviain is planning this, it might work out.
>>
>>31314017
Julian is an irresponsible bastard of the worst kind. Predicating the mental stability of so many important military, strategic and scientific minds on his own survival is dangerous for the war effort. Polygamy is somewhat logical in a world where men are slightly at a premium, but an unstable relationship involving lots of people who matter to the war effort is a tad dangerous.

>>31314493
Always count on /tg/ to think with their dick to fuck up the future.

Now I know how all the girls died in that bad end.

It starts with harem.
>>
>>31314493
oh shut up
>>
>>31314645
Actually, they got a good end in a harem, and he had a lot more people
