You wake bleary-eyed and tired. The actual memory of your death lingers and presses against you, a gentle whisper of 'you could have died'. You shiver a little. You really hope it doesn't happen again as you get dressed in your armor - comfortable after cleaned and shined, compared to your red dress - and heft your spear. A note on your desk regarding the time to be at the docks, as well as a harshly worded warning about not engaging with Micheal, sours the mood.

It's a bright day. Beautiful and warm, pleasant to the senses. You work through forms, Micheal just as hard, and...

Wait, what?

Monica is here as well, in white fencing clothes. She holds a shining, silvery blade, which you can sense to be magical - a Noble sword. She is less skilled than Micheal, for certain, but capable enough to just barely hold her own. Perhaps only against ruffians, but her fencing is fairly decent.

You know that later on today, you'll be leaving - and you've express instructions to avoid engaging with Micheal, as well.

Monica approaches, then remembers something, walking past you and fetching her blackboard. She straps it to her arm, almost like a shield, then writes.

"So, have you ever been abroad? We might need to discuss a few things before we leave." she writes, then removes her helmet.

>I've not been abroad yet, what are you referring to, exactly?
>I've been... around? (lie)
>I'm just the muscle, it won't matter, right?
>(ignore, watch Micheal)

I'm confused, was that from a dream we had off screen because the last post from last thread mentioned nothing that could have lead to that, it seem weird and random and feels like its missing context that would help me understand what it means, since we did we die?

You 'died' when Raeve saved you from the crossbow bolt - but you have the memory of that death anyway, from the fate that was changed. In short, when you spend an extra life from Raeve favor, you remember how you died and the sensation of it. Overuse leads to mental trauma.

"Well... No. What are you referring to?"

"How to handle international discussions." she writes. "Things like etiquette, manners, and the like which are universal." she smiles. "You are no dumb muscle, but you are not the best at this. You train me, I train you?"

"What would you like to learn?"

"I need to work on my form. My mother taught me, but... we had a falling-out regarding certain things. I need to relearn footwork, have you time?"

"Sure."

"As for you, I'll just go over the basics over the trip." she says, and you launch into training her. Working from the base she already has, you make strong progress over a few hours. You wouldn't say she's talented, per se, but she does have strong willpower - and her tolerance for pain is so great you ponder if there's some medical condition involved.

By the time you finish, you're both panting and sitting on the bench - and Micheal has left.

Ja'al enters the scene, and you visibly see Monica stiffen. Not from hate or anger or fear - she's nervous and worried.

"I thought I would update you both before you left and give you something to help. Your hand?"

You Eye him, and he checks out. He pricks you and Monica and himself with a needle, mixing the blood in a vial. Then he drops three iron rings into it.

"This is new, actually. There are tiny, tiny bits of soul within your blood, you see." he explains. "This is a way we can stay in contact - with these rings, we should be able to send thoughts to one another. Think of it like... stretching out a line from your soul to the others in the ring network." he says, tapping the vial. The blood vanishes, leaving three deep red rings, which he shakes into his hand. He hands them to the both of you, then slides it on himself.

"Calm down, Monica." you manage, patting her shoulder. She calms herself.

+Amazing...+ Monica says, after she calms.

"ANy chances of... bleedover?" you ask.

"Oh, they're not fully tested." Ja'al says brightly. "But if anything like that happens, it won't be permanent, I know that for a fact. The body and soul mismatch will eventually force reversion. Kinda like how demons cannot inhabit a body permanently."

Monica nods quietly.

+Thank you for your help in that matter. I was unkind when it occurred.+ she manages, flushing.

"Pay it no mind, Monica." Ja'al says. "To be honest, I didn't like that you might have been executed - it felt... cheap." he grins. "I much prefer how things went to how the King wanted to deal with it."

She nods, looking at her feet. "Anyway. The maximum range should be very far, but the farther out you go, the longer it takes to deliver. I don't know the times, exactly. Not an easy thing to test without an excuse like this to send you trotting about."

Monica nods. "Any other questions?"

when she was possessed, many threads ago, Ja'al's talk of

>+Thank you for your help in that matter. I was unkind when it occurred.+ she manages, flushing.

"Wait, when did that happen?"

"Oh! You probably weren't told." Ja'al says. "When it came to light that Monica was compromised, the king wanted her executed as soon as possible. He was... curiously eager when he heard it was a Seducer, especially one linked to the crown." he shrugs. "However, I made it clear she could be cleansed and the demon expunged. When Micheal backed me, the idea was discarded."

"Oh." you say. "Can you make one of those rings for Micheal?"

"Not at the moment. No communications with him directly, remember? But I'll work on something." he smiles. "If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask." he says, bowing and leaving.

"Before you go, is there anything we need to do to maintain the limbs you gave us?"

"Not a thing, really! Magically made, magically sturdy. Ring me if they get busted, though."

+Why can't I speak near him? Near any of them? From whence, this apprehension?+ Monica asks, sounding oddly sad. +...Oh well. We have to meet our escort.+

You both rise, heading to the main hall. A... A young person is there, bowing to the king. Dressed in military dress uniform, with a slender build, you can hardly tell whether they're male or female. Given that posterior, you want to say female, but...

+Any thoughts?+

+She is a notable officer in the Central Army.+ Monica replies. +Stalwart, polite, dutiful, and kind. Likely she has some know-how that would be helpful, or the like. Her name is Melodi Ter Opiane. Related distantly to Karl, actually, but only by marriage and technicality.+

+She?+

+...Well, she has a condition.+

+...?+

+She has trouble maintaining a gender. Sex. Er. Whichever - she swaps occasionally. Something's wrong, or at least different, with her soul. Research is ongoing.+

+How do you know all this stuff?+

+It behooves a noble lady to keep in touch with even the most distant relations to royals and heroes.+ she says, proud, even a tiny bit smug. +In any case, don't focus on that. She prefers to be referred to as female, even when, well.+

Ah.

After some discussion with the king, Melodi approaches you, smiling.

You let out a sigh of relief. "I was stationed here and have been since I started. I've seen combat, but no major battles - most of my distinguishments have been in prevention." she admits.

"So... How long will we be on the boat?"

"At most a week, at the least a few days. Depends on the sailing conditions." she says. "Either way, we're to be in the kingdom for a full month." she goes on as you approach the dock.

There's a mental... You're not sure what you would call it, something like a gasp of anticipation combined with a scream of happiness, as Monica sees the ship. Almost instantly, your mind is bombarded with wild and frenetic information, so fast you can't take it in. Something about sails and wood and the crew and maybe even the engine, whatever that is? She rushes onto the ship, her face alight with a wide grin as she goes about examining everything she can even get close to, then flying into your cabin. Whereupon another gleeful cheer rises.

"Energetic." Melodi remarks as you all board.

>>
>>31306146
You find Monica, already changed into a shorter-skirted dress that is belted on quite tight.
"So... ships, huh?"

+Yes!+ the smile on her face is one of passion. +I was practically raised on deck. My father built an empire on shipping, sailing, and fishing, so...+ she flushes a little. +Part of me, when I was younger, truly wished to be a captain.+ she admits. +Old dreams.+

You smile as she walks you through what can be expected from this voyage - simple meals, maybe a storm or two, and perhaps a lot of relaxation. +As passengers, our job is to stay out of the way. Just relax until we get there.+

"Are you going to be alright when we arrive? It's all..." you gesture.

+Demihumans, I know.+ she sighs. +I'll... I'll just think of them as big cats, I guess.+

"You know about the Tou empire?"

+I've done some research, yes. It's a small, split kingdom from the Rakshasa Empire. The Tou were slaves, but were lead to rebellion by a religious leader who worshipped a Tou goddess known as Chain-breaker. A translated name, mind, I cannot recall the local apellation. They fled from the mountain regions the Rakshasas claimed, and roosted in the desert around a large oasis. In the last forty years, it's grown into something rather bustling.+

"Huh. Anything I should know?"

+The desert is arid, hot, and dangerous. Drapey, sheer clothing is preferred, if any is preferred at all - the Tou have a light downy coating of fur, so they don't need to shield themselves from the sun like we do. It is tradition to knock the back of your fist against the one of the person you're greeting, as Rakshasas have reversed hands and while they are practiced illusionists, they cannot hide that aspect of themselves. Wearing gloves is... suspect, at best, like wearing a mask would be back home.+

"...You really know your stuff."

+Thank you. Micheal was the one who taught me most of this, though...+

You manage ably, but Monica is completely unfazed, and in fact maneuvers better than before. Melodi joins you, humming as she works her way into it. She uses a slender longsword, which shines brightly but isn't even magical.

The meal afterwards is nourishing, but barely palatable, seasoning and spices used harshly to make up for a lack of flavour.

After all is said and done, Monica returns to bed, and the full moon lights the deck. Melodi smiles, kneeling at the guard railing. Her eyes are lit up by silvery strands.

You're too nervous to undress, but you watch Melodi's outfit fall away, part by part, piece by piece. You feel silvery, shining light fill you, wrap you, comforting you, and you feel soft and warm...

You blink awake on a rough bed in your cabin, groaning as you clutch your head. Melodi is stretching, rising from her bed, fully dressed.

>What even happened last night? It's so unclear...
>*Check for decency*
>Where's Monica?

"What even happened?"

"We danced. I was uncovered, you were covered. We both pleased Her, but she sensed you were growing uncomfortable, and... helped." she smiles softly as you check your clothing - it's all still on you. You groan and lay back, looking at the roof. "We all worship in different ways, Sister. Just... understand I only wished to dance. Nothing more."

She leaves the room, and you join her.

It seems that the rest of this trip will be quite formulaic. Would you like to skip to landing?

Prayer shouldn't lead to hangovers and memory loss.

The boat trip is uneventful, quiet, and for the most part, undisturbed. You train Monica by day, pray by night (though never full prayers, so to speak) and mostly just relax and enjoy yourself. Once landed, you notice that the port town is tiny, and by your reckoning, took only a few days.

"This can't be the final destination..."

"It's not, Annelin. We're just here for transit." Melodi states, marching towards a stable. The architecture is smooth stone, emphasizing flat surfaces with lavish paints, in some cases massive murals where possible. You nearly leap out of your skin when Melodi returns with a huge, wide lizard, a passenger box strapped to its back. It's three horses wide and four long, though quite short. Almost as if it was squished on birth. Long, yellow scales cover it, and beady black eyes stare into the distance. The streets are oddly bare of people.

"Should our welcome wagon have been here already?" You ask.

"He'll meet us at first oasis." she says, whipping the lizard into motion. It lumbers forth on wide legs, small tail thunking the sand.

It's a long trip, you notice, and the heat is starting to get to both you and Monica.

"Gelkin is in sight, ladies!" Melodi calls out. And that's when everything goes flying. The sand beneathe the beast explodes, sending you, Monica, and Melodi flying. The poor mount is torn open by the force of the blast, but you manage to catch both Monica and Melodi by virtue of sheer luck, setting them down beside you. In the swirling sands, you see a figure, a silhouette - tall and lanky, covered in patchwork armor, weilding a long, curved blade.

Magic contaminates the sandstorm he's in, his whole body, and even his blade, as Monica draws her own as she rises. Melodi and yourself also draw blade and spear.

The area is rough, sandy terrain, difficult for you to move through reliably, but at least it is even and not sloped. The sandstorm occludes your vision, and magic contaminates the area. Behind you is the remains of the beast of burden.

You also notice you're surrounded by old ruins, half-made walls and pillars all over.

You turn on the eye, seeing through the sand.

A skeleton, wearing long armored robes, holding a thin curved blade. His face is masked, his body covered, but there's no way it's a living person in there.

"Monica, Melodi, find cover." you state, readying your shield as the skeleton raises its blade. Sand, covered in magic, launches forth. It slams into your shield, pushing you back, scratching your cheek and neck slightly before you pull away from it with a grunt of effort. He raises his free hand, and you leap way - spikes of sand erupt where you were standing.

How... You frown as the creature moves, pulling the sandstorm with him - it's about as wide as five men, and reaches high into the sky.

No mortal man could raise an indepentant undead like this. Either there's a necromancer nearby, or... Or something. You can't see any magic threads...

You launch forth, spinning the spear into its sheathe as you leap. The skeleton raises its blade, and your punch with your artificial arm to meet it.

You can feel something crack. You feel something give. And like a mirror, the magic shatters, sand falling to the earth in eddies and clumps. You land heavily, the skeleton bared.

It stares at you, moving towards you steadily with strong steps, though it sounds like a dicebox.

You rush forth to intercept and slam it with your shield - only to feel it punch the shield.

You feel your shoulder dislocate, your shield dent, and you skid back, gasping. What... What WAS THAT?

It moves so slowly... The bones in the arm cracked and broken, leaking black fire now. But that strength was phenomenal. You've no idea how it hit so hard! It turns towards the ruins, falling into a steady gait.

"MONICA! MELODI!" you scream, hefting your spear. The skeleton catches the spear, and tosses it back as you stumble forward, resetting your shield arm as the two girls run away.

But the skeleton doesn't care - it reaches into the sand, lifting out a bone. It tears off its own arm, and slams the bone into place, replacing the shattered one.

Then it turns to face you.
