Welcome, class, my name is Herbert Kleinsman, Doctor of History, cryptography and cybernetics.
For this new semester I'll ask you a very important question.
Have you ever wondered how our world came to enjoy the peace and prosperity it does today?
I see some in the audience seem bored, so allow me to spice things up a bit.

----
You are Clark Weston.
You're a prisoner.
And you're very, very bored.
You also suspect that the two facts might be related.

The cell they put you in is a featureless grey, plasteel coated with some sort of foam to keep inmates from bashing their heads in and escaping, heh, "justice". Not that you're in any danger of that; You always found pain to be something more pleasurable to dish out than receive.

[] Speak to the guard
[] Pursue some "alternate relaxation" methods
[] Other
Also, would you describe yourself mostly as
[] Charming
[] Intelligent

> You have seven dots in Mind
> You have four dots in Soul
> You have four dots in Body
For a brief moment you consider doing something naughty, but really, you don't quite have the energy right now. Instead you up to recline on your bench and mutter something.
The guard starts, turning her (arguably handsome, if no match for a younger girl or your wife) face to you in a mix of annoyance and curiousity.
"What was that?"
"I said 'Knight on d5', lady. Looks like my winning streak's far from over".
She blanches, going over the scenario again while you smile to yourself at seeing the gears slowly turn and shift in her head. Bright she might be, but there have been very few people to ever challenge your status as one of the smartest men of your time.
Well, for the most part. Closing your eyes you allow yourself a moment to reminisce before returning to the present.
Looks like your attendent has begun accepting her defeat, and deciding that another survey of the grey walls would be about as challenging as another match you decide to make smalltalk instead.
"So what do you think they gonnna do with me, huh?"
She frowns, rolling her eyes.
"Execute you, why?" Jeez, why is everyone here so fucking BORING?
"Awwm really? Like, realy really? Surely they can't be serious, right? I mean, President Paul basically told me to complete Project Zephyrus personally an-- oh, I'm sorry, I guess that's classified. Bottom line is, it'd be a waste to waste me, my pretty".

"An opinion we share, Mister Weston".
You both start at the new voice, she more than you. Why are girls in this day and age still so jumpy?
The man, greying and looking like he just came from a James Bond set shows the guard a plaque, but instead of relaxing she seems all that much more alarmed.
He continues, uncaring of her discomfort.
"If you were to help us, we might perhaps be able to aid you. Perhaps even get your sentence changed... lessened, if you understand".

Well, whatever this guy wants certainly beats twiddling your thumbs while waiting. Hopefully.
"Easy there Agent Smith, point me in the direction of the sucker you want dead and it's as good as done"
Rising ever so gracefully you stroll over to the bars, close enough that you can smell the other man's undoubtedly expensive colonge. Big shot then, an assessment his clothes seem to give credence to. You're suddenly a lot less bored and a lot more wary. You look into his eyes, trying to fixate him. You weren't ever truy good with people but you know for a fact that you gaze tends to be unsettling.
"So tell me, big guy, what's the catch? There's always a catch, moreso since this lovely lady here claims that I happen to be on death row".
The other man meets your gaze, steely grey eyes (almost) unflinching. Good, this might shape up to be more of a challenge than you've had in a while (though getting a birthday present for Delilah came close).
"What we want from you, Mister Weston, is your unique talents and, uhm", his mouth twists into a somewhat disgusted frown, "special mental attributes, if we could call it that".
> Trait gained: Mind of the Puppeteer: You're observant and cynical, loathe to trust and quick to judge. Bonus on intimidation and observation, malus on diplomacy

You're earnest when you reply.
"Well, that sounds like some good news, I suppose. When do we start, Mister Mysterious?"
"Right now".
The man nods to the guard, and after a moment's hesistation she unlocks your cell with the aid of the door's in-built retina scan and an assortment of no less than three different keys, all no doubt themselves keyed to her DNA. The paranoia of some people...

Now that you think about it, you do recognize one of them, a certain Florian Kleinsman, from University. Kleinsman coughs, which finally seems to fetch the attention of iPad girl. Seems like he's in charge here. Or perhaps they've got some history together? You note it down for later. Relationships are always such fascniating breaking points.
"Now that the, uh, subject has been informed and is in attendance we will go reiterate one final time in order to ascertain everyone the entire picture in regards to this operation".

"Is footage of the FRATER Augmented Combat and Reconnaiscance Suit. As evidenced by the time stamps in the corner it was taken exactly twenty-five hours ago, concluding a series of tests that exceeded expectations all across the board".
The video projected into the air from an invisible source portraits something looking like a crusader's armour running and climbing around an indoors track, taking on APC barehanded and getting into shoot-outs with training androids that all end with them disabled one after the other without a scratch on hte suit itself.

Kleinsman looks over to you, giving you a faint but way too self-important smile.
That one is going to need some reigning-in. Sure, you could just take a table leg to his face but since that was what got you into this situation in the first place you think better of it.
Instead, you consign yourself to waiting, and he continues.
The next recording depicts a somewhat similar suit, though heavier with two shoulder-mounted cannons and a huge claymore like sword strapped to the back going through a similar course, dated a few months ealier.
The title beneath identifies the model as "Experimental Super-Heavy Combat Suit WEREBEAR".
The third, and final recording is of a sleek, almost femine suit if shimmering silver and white equipped with a jetpack, several interchangeable rapid-fire canons and extendable hand blades. You not that it seems to perform the highest in speed tests and apparently comes with several stealth options both optical and otherwise. Its name seems to be BURNING ZEPHYRUS.

Presentation done, Kleinsman disactivates the holo and turns to you.
"What we want of you, Dr. Weston, is to test the Erebus Think Tank's newest line of inventions for us. As you know, the situation in our world has become increasingly unstable after China unvailed their newest discoveries in the field of genetic manipulation. This programe is our answer".

Leaning back you steeple your fingers, allowing the barest hint of a surly smile to find its way onto your face.
"Cool, beats sitting in a cell on any count. Why we doing this thing, you want me to kill some Chinks for you or just zip around in mech suit for the most noble cause of science?"
"Oh and", you raise a finger to forestall an interruption, "to be clear, I'm getting the FRATER model or the deal is off, capiche?"
Kleinsman frowns, apparently not used to this kind of tone. Well, he best adjust fast.
"O-of course, we always planned to leave the choice of equipment up to the subject for quite a number of reasons. Now to address your question: It depends. At present there seeems little evidence of Transhuman on Human agression, but what little we have is somewhat alarming. This programme's long-term goal is to present an answer to the world's challenge, and as such we expect you to be involved in a variety of conflicts, both to change the tide of battle and collect data in a multitude of environments". Does this turbonerd ever stop to take a breath? Probably not, that would imply he had a life in need of sustaining.
"Furthermore, you were chosen specifically due to your attested psychopathic tendencies, riflemanship background and", he twists his face into another one of his painful expressions again, "excellent academic records". Good, at least someone gets it.
"So, when do I start". You're starting to itch for excitement.
"Today".

That was twenty-four hours ago.

Sitting on the bench in front of the steel room housing the training parcourt you roll your shoulders, slowly getting adjusted to the weight of servos and armour plates encasing you. It's a surprisingly light contraption, and the synskin implanted in your skull makes sure it knows exactly what it is supposed to.

"Any one RL gun" means any gun that has been produced or will come out this year.
Fixed.
For the record, you are currently unaware of any apparent malfunctions in either your suit or implant.

Implant slots:
Head (1)
Eyes
Ears.
Upper arm.
Lower arm.
Hands.
Chest.
Abdomen.
Thighs.
Lower legs.
Feet.
Right now the only available Implant Slots are Head and Hands.
Additional upgrade slots become unlocked the more you convince the project team of your usefulness. No two implants can take the same slot.

H&K G112. It's an assault rifle, an LMG, it's both. It's great

because the reunification of Germany nearly bankrupted the country, they decided they would stick with what they had which was working fine and not spend the money

it was built in anticipation for the cold war going hot, the wall coming down and the reunification of germany ruined those plans

dude, no country that was looking at its development could afford to replace their current arsenal with it when the cold war ended and they had to deal with half of europe suddenly coming back into the fold

plenty of countries were interested in its development, but most were happy with what they had, which was adequate

but we're not happy with adequate, we want the best there has ever been and ever will be

Across your lap lays your newest acquisition, a H&K G11 "Parallax II” model, comp-specced to be usable both with your suit on and off, square plasteel chassis polished to a dull sheen.
The gun’s often been called ugly by ignorami but what do you care for the opinions of those without a sense for the inherent aesthetics of functionality?
Sure, it might not have the sleek lines of your other weapon, an Invictus III Plasma Cannon, but the latter lacks the satisfaction you always experience firing a real man’s weapon.
Checking your utility belt for the three spare mags you key the door and survey the track that will be the site of today’s entertainment.
When you brained that arrogant fucker Stephenson you certainly didn’t expect your life to take such a dramatic turn, but fate or whatever cosmic power is up there has smiled on you, and, just for once, you feel like smiling back.

I'm sure many wouldn't mind hearing more, but sadly this concludes tonight's class. Check the announcements on your retina screens or on the hallways for when we will resume. I hope it was pleasant for most and at least a bit enlightening for others. The history of the human race is a history of war, and Weston's war shaped us like few others did.

Same day, i.e next thread, though depending on how people choose it might be towards the end, rather than the start.

Thankee sai, your words have warmed my heart.

Quite. I think IRC is one of those things that'll have to go next time.

Also, would you prefer more plot or more disconnected missions? Both will be a thing, but I'd like to know how to weigh these things.

Sup/tg/ is easy to sort and archive binge with, its preferred, Foolz can always be a handy backup

>Also, would you prefer more plot or more disconnected missions? Both will be a thing, but I'd like to know how to weigh these things.
Start out disconnected, we're a test subject, we should feel like it, build character, get to know our colleagues and the setting and get some developments underway before PLOT slaps us in the face with its giant cock

What can I say? I try my best to rope people into the global social network conspiracy through any means, even going so far as running quests for it.
It pleases me to hear you enjoyed, Anonymous.
>>
OP, how advanced is tech? Anything about the setting you want to spoil?
>>
>>31317547
The technology at the time was starting to go through a second renaissance. Many discoveries were made almost over night, others suddenly being taken out of their dusty drawers to be applied in earnest.

One of the most important (and relevant in the context of this class) was the ability to manipulate various fungi mycelia into interfacing with both technology and flesh. Flagellus aetherium is to be mentioned most prominently here.
Building on this, it became easy to create semi-organic implants that no longer needed to be painstakingly connected to the nervous system through incredibly crude means.

Another discovery was the perfection of the fusion cell which allowed the creation of plasma weaponry capable of not only housing its own independent plasma generator, but cooling unit as well. While room temperature superconductors were not en vogue at the time, this allowed technicians to bridge the gap.

Ah, any other questions?
