"Arise again, o slumbering metal god!
We give to you our toil, our blood, our praise
That thou may stand, o iron god once-slain,
And walk once more, and smite our foes with death!"

-Rite of Resurrection of the God-Engine, Verse 3 Book 1

In the grim darkness of the 31st Millennium, iron gods walk among men.

You are god-wielder. You are a proud scion of Legio Pugnatores, the sword of Forge World Yitorach.

Your skin is adamantium: your blood, promethium. Your heart is a star's heart, roiling plasma roaring through your bones. You are armored by the Immaterium itself. You carry death in one fist and fire in the other.

You are the Machine God's own wrath made manifest.

You are a Princeps, pilot of a Titan. And today, you Walk upon Site Primaris.

It is the calm before the storm.

Twenty-five xeno engines are arrayed before you, mere kilometers out. With the beachhead captured, the 2754th landed as many troops, armor, and Titans as it could, but in the end it is your twenty versues twenty-five of theirs.

During the lull, as last repairs were made and oaths were renewed, you had elected to converse with your Moderati and your Enginseer. Speaking with Deculta was as enlightening as it was...novel.

<Exloading previous data blurts>

><A muttering fills the back of your mind: talks of "hip-bones" and "pectorals" and "aesthetically-pleasing golden ratios".

>It is easy to forget about Deculta; a good enginseer is one a Princeps never notices, so good is he at maintaining the systems and appeasing the machine spirit. You decide to strike up a private conversation with Deculta.

><Honored enginseer,> you data-blurt. <Are you receiving?>

><Greetings, Princeps Pullo. How may I be of service?>

>You...are not entirely certain what to say. While the Collegia Titanica and the rest of the Mechanicus are nominally of one body, there is nonetheless an informal, unspoken degree of separation between the two institutions. The Titanicus, after all, are not directly involved in the Quest for Knowledge.>

><How fares Tankred, honored enginseer?>

><Tankred is performing at approximately 99.9993% efficiency--.0000001% margin of error. Due to circumstances, including but not limited to: your own skill at piloting, favorable quantum states, and the blessing of the Machine God, this Engine only sustained minor damage to systems, if any. Any flaws that would result in performance issues have already been repaired. If we were at a proper Titan bay, I could increase performance to 100.001435% efficiency, but alas.>

><Why the interest in the human form?>

>Deculta is silent for a moment. Then, in a stream of data-blurt he replies.

><In previous eras, the earliest of our kind studied metal and electricity. To what end? To not only start on the Quest for Knowledge, but to better emulate the Deus Machinae.

><Now, consider the following: when a piece of the Machine God, even the simplest lever, is to be upgraded and changed, does it not require a minimum base level of understanding before the proper rites of upgrade can be performed on it? As we Tech-Adepts seek to artifice ourselves in the image of Deus Machinae, so we must better understand the base flesh that we seek to replace.

><That, Princeps Pullo, is why I study the human form as rigorously as I do that which is made of iron and steel.>

>You nod your head, though whether it's in understanding or out of politeness you're not absolutely certain yet.

><I see-->

><I also find the human female form to be more aesthetically appealing than the male form. My internal sensors indicate a spike in dopamine levels whenever I analyze female bodies, and I find that higher levels of dopamine are directly proportional to increased levels of concentration and creativity.>

><Ah.>

><If you permit, Princeps Pullo, I am willing to provide you the secrets which I have uncovered about the-->

><No,> you blurt, <that is quite alright, honored enginseer.>

>><How extensively do you emulate the Machine God, honored Enginseer?>

<I am grateful for this inquiry,> blurts Deculta, <for I have had little opportunity to speak about my bionics for some time.> You can just barely hear the whirring of several-score mechadentrites above the slumbering of Tankred. <I have excised approximately 92% of my former, unworthy flesh-form. Supplementary information: 87.334% of my body mass consists of mechadendrites attached to my torso. The Machine God saw it fit to bless me with the revelation that mechadentrites, rather than bionic limbs, would be the optimally efficient method of performing His work.>

Ah, yes. You recall seeing Deculta without his crimson robe once: his form was a teeming mass of dendrites, attached to uncountable sockets in the steel shell that served as his torso. Four greater mechadendrites sprouted from his back--these he used to climb or lift heavy objects. The rest served as hands, feet, and fingers, applying whatever role seemed best for the given task. He never walked as much as he simply slid across the floor, born on innumerable tiny feet.

<Furthermore, my abdominal cavity currently houses twenty-two different tools of artifice, to assist in repair and artisanal work at any time. Finally, the majority of my cranial cavities are devoted to sensor suites and a code-relay augmitter, for transfering code-data to any appropriate receptacle. Quite useful for reprogramming Servitors ad hoc.

<Were there any further inquiries?>

>Speak with your friend, Servatus

<Thank you for indulging me, honored Enginseer,> you say.

<It is of no consequence, Princeps Pullo,> is the reply. <I will return immediately to my ministrations upon this wonderous Engine.>

Deculta at once falls into his mumblings. You decide it is best to ignore just what he was mumbling about, and hail Servatus Obsevat.

"Servatus!" you say with a grin. "Feeling nervous already?"

"Hmm? Oh, it's you, Darius. What do you need?" Was that distraction you heard in his voice?

You ask, "Is something the matter?"

There is the slightest pause before he begins--your internal chronometer measures it as less than a fraction of a second, but you sense it. "Ah, it's nothing. Just ruminating on the battle ahead." He says in a low voice, "Twenty-five Xeno Engines..."

"Ha! You're not wrong there. I just hope I can trust you to take the Gladius' back when the time comes." Even through the vox you an see the grin on his face.

He continues, "Though, I hear from Lord Herax that we may be relegated to the rear when we engage the xenos." A hint of dissatisfaction taints his words. "To 'provide fire support'. A kinder way of saying, 'take care of the Imperial infantry'."

"And what is wrong with that?"

"You said it yourself," he says with a grunt, "now is the time for us to show our strength, that Yitorach will rise once more. But we aren't cowardly snipers or artillerists--we are the WARMONGERS. The Gladius doesn't have a power claw for nothing." The Burning Brand's clawed hand waves up and down for emphasis. "We are brawlers, not sharpshooters. 'Firesupport' isn't where our glory lies."

>"This is far more than just about our glory, Servatus. The Imperium is at stake here."

A snort. "The I--look, the Imperium will be fine. The last great threat died at Ullanor six years ago, this world hardly anything. The only reason Unraed brought twenty engines for this campaign is because Ork artificers are a pain to excise, and if this campaign fails the Emperor will simply send his Astartes and some more Engines to conquer it." You hear the shuffling of armor and cloth as Servatus fidgets. "Ahran will be the last time the Pugnatores Walk, mark my words, and if we don't win glory for Yitorach in this campaign, then--"

"I know, I know," you say, sighing. "Mechanics politics means Yitorach will be left forgotten. But we have a duty to the Imperium, Servatus. We are part of it."

Servatus sounds as though he wants to say something, but decides against it. "Irrelevant. In any case, be ready for battle, Darius." Another snort. "Even if we'll barely play any part in it." He abruptly ends the vox, leaving you to your own thoughts.

Captain Entomac rumbles out a reply. "Many of my brothers are with other Expeditions. My company happened to be nearby when the Lord Commander petitioned for an Astartes contingent."

You remember: the last you heard, the bulk of Legio X was heading towards the Isstvan system for...something. You had asked others about it; the Imperials in the 2754th knew nothing, while the Magi of the Perditores seemed reluctant to answer. "This conversation is over, Princeps."

The vox falls silent.

The Iron Hands were not known for their social skills, true, but even for the sons of Manus this was unusually brusque. Between this and Hexa's previous comments, you wonder what could possibly be happening at Isstvan...

Before you can muse much further, Cuugo turns back towards you. "Incoming vox from Lord Herax."

"Attention, Legio Pugnatores, my good sons and daughters." Lord Herax's voice rings out through the cockpit of Tankred. "We will be holding an emergency strategy meeting over vox. Give it your full attention, Warmongers, the battle ahead will not be easy."

>>Cons: The longer Site Primaris remains untouched, the longer you are left bereft of orbital support, and the longer you will be exposed to fire from Ork anti-orbital guns at Site Primaris.

>2) Have some of our assets strike Site Primaris
>>Pros: If successful, the 2754th will be able to deploy gunships that can easily turn the tide of battle. Given that you are outnumbered, this is something to consider.
>>Cons: If the strike force is unsucessful, you are inviting to be divided and conquered. Even if the strike force is successful, you run the risk of having your primary force be overwhelmed.

(If you choose to have some of our assets strike Site Primaris, indicate which will be in the strike force and which will remain to deal with the Orks. You may divide our forces however you wish. For example, you could have all Titans, the Uthuans, and the Iron Hands engage the Gargants between Site Primaris and the beachhead, while the Karthadi and the Tung strike Site Primaris. Or even have the non-Titans engage the Gargants while all or some Titans make for Site Primaris.

Note that how you divide our forces will matter: if you decide to have all Titans rush for Site Primaris, for example, then you must break through the Ork lines, which runs the risk of all your Titans getting bogged down or flanked. And so forth.)

Everything is in position. The Annihilators front and center; the Warmongers and Iron Hands on the flanks. The Tung and Uthuans were in reserve, and the Karthadi artillery stood ready.

It is time for battle.

"Auspex reads movement," says a voice. It is Princeps Orpheus Tychare, commander of the Perditores assigned to the 2754th. "They are coming."

You can feel the *thrum* of Tankred's plasma-heart surging. Its claws of death and fire itch to tear apart the Xeno-Engines marching towards you, its hatred and bloodlust threatening to overwhelm you.

One last systems check.

"Moderati, enginseer, pre-battle diagnostics check."

"Aye Princeps."

"Void Shields at 100%, Princeps."

"Weapons?"

You give an involuntary twich of your fingers, and power flares into your weapons.

"Weapons capacitors ready, aye."

"Reactor status?"

<Reactor status nominal, Princeps.>

They were getting close to Turbolaser range. "Firing solution, Moderati?"

"Cogitating..."

Already the Earthshaker rounds are falling around the Orks. Pillars of dirt spring up as shells pound the earth around the xenos. Any moment now...

"All forces!" says Tychare, "make ready to counter-charge! We stand for Mars!"

"For the Emperor!"

"FOR THE EMPEROR!"

You whisper in kind:

"Expugnata."

THREAD END

Sorry for cutting this short guys. I wanted to do the last battle with a fresh thread, so I figured now would be a good time to pause the thread. I have to admit: I'm a little burned out from the shit I had to do in March (read: the shit that delayed this thread until now), and doing a thread right on the heels of it means I'm not at 100%. Sorry if the writing quality dropped...

To make up for it, I will be sticking around for a while to answer any questions you might have, either about the quest or about WH40k lore in general.

Next thread is tentatively planned for Sunday, 7 PM EST. I might be running on Saturday as well, depending on how my personal stuff goes this weekend. As always, check my twitter for updates.

Thanks for playing, and I'm very glad to be back! Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for coming back, man!

I think this is a really interesting quest and your writing isn't half bad either. You got yourself a player.
