Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you finally picked up the custom weapons and armor you ordered almost a week ago, and outfitted your companions with better gear.

As the four of you walk through the great oaken door of the Academy, you turn to Chryssa. “Lets drop our purchases off in our rooms, then start looking for a training room of some sort. I'm betting sparring will help you wrap your head around channeling.” She nods, and Fulvia speaks up. “I believe I will return to my task copying your purchases via the Archeota. The only tome I have left is the Five Effects Every Vatis Should Know; however, this is also the largest tome.” Profectus looks between the two of them and shrugs. “Guess I might as well pop my head in the library and look around. If everyone is being 'productive' all of a sudden wouldn't be fair for me to go off and have a good time.”

“Good, I'd rather not find you beaten and drunk in a whorehouse waiting to be carted off to prison two nights in a row.” You comment while the party makes its way through the grand entry hall to the guest suites. Profectus squares himself up and does his best to look offended. “I'll have you know that the Golden Cat is a perfectly legitimate bath house, and that five gold was an outrageous price to pay. They hiked up the cost purely due to my deformity.” You sigh as you make your way up the stone steps. “Well if that's the case you certainly didn't need to hire four of them.” He folds his arms in front of his chest, much like a pissy teenager, but at least keeps his mouth shut.

After you put your new purchases away in your suite, you and Chryssa set off to explore the campus. Surely it won't be too hard to find a sparring room, there are directions posted at every corner. The halls are scattered with apprentices babbling about one thing or another, but it's not nearly as crowded as it was this morning. The large, arched windows are shut tightly against the rain and torches have been lit to provide light to read by. It takes some effort to find the training rooms but you manage it in a timely fashion.
>>
The room is empty, compared to the rest of the Academy. One apprentice, a young man, jabs at a sand-filled bag hanging from the ceiling. Odd, but probably good exercise. Someone wearing the robes of a full fledged Vatis meditates in the center of the sparring ground, the sand that covers the floor formed into tiny figures which fight each other with swords of congealed quartz. The rest of the room is thankfully empty, providing you and Chryssa plenty of room to spar.

She turns to you as you enter. “I believe I promised to teach you how to handle weaponry with some modicum of skill. Would you like to spar with fist or blades first?”

>Fist, focus on helping Chryssa wrap her head around channeling vys.

Create little people out of the Element we're meditating on and wage full fledged battles. Good for control, multitasking, and details.

Yeah, it's okay though, fist supplements spear nicely. When they get inside our spear we can drop it and surprise them with our fists.

You think about the question for a moment. While you're certainly eager to get whacked repeatedly with a wooden sword, for now you'd like to show you can at least sort of handle yourself in close quarters. “Lets start off with hand to hand, I'd like to set you on your way towards proper apprenticeship before I worry about getting beaten back and forth across the room.” The corner of her mouth curls just slightly upwards in a smirk. “I'm touched that you care so much about my magical education.”

The two of you find a nice spot on the sandy sparring grounds well away from the meditating mage and assume fighting stances. Her style is obviously defensive, one foot planted firmly forward with the other held back in a striking position and guard already raised. Yours is much more aggressive. One hand is held forward to guard, while the other is pressed into your abdomen in a striking position. Your feet are spread apart, one braced behind you while the other is held slightly elevated.

It was really more of a sliding scale, with 14-16 being average.

You could spend vys if you wanted to maybe bump that up a bit. I did recently realize I'd been employing my own system incorrectly though. In the magic pastebin it states the maximum amount of vys you can spend on any one roll is 5.

The army if little ice people assaulting the earth castle, using their water magics to wear down a hole in the wall. Then the Water and Earth are forced to band together when the powerful fire people attack both groups from the flank.

Meanwhile Nature sits in hiding waiting to finish off the victor. Silently praying it is Earth or Water.

Seconding this or something like it for the next training session.

We could have so much fun with this.
>>
>>31185103
this sounds interesting but im not sure we can control that many elements at once.
Ice and nature should be some what easy since master and we have the staff. So adding another might be possible.
But I think we should first try meditating with two elements before we make it to 3 elements.
>>
>>31185145
Of course, always start small and work your way up.

But i think we can control many different elements as long as we are proficient in them and aren't focusing expending too much Vys on any of them, which we wouldn't if they were miniaturized.
>>
My problem with the mini war is that it focuses too much on elaborate and not enough on sympathetic.

Remember that meditation needs to directly relate to what you are trying to achieve.

So, anyone else up for asking prof if he also wants to become our apprentice. Specifically by suggesting fire vatis would make him be able to use his arm more and longer without exhausting (probably) and earth vatis to keep it from growing too big due to lava deposition
>>
>>31185175
I am up for this with water and nature.
since even doing intricate parties on both nature and water shouldn't be to expensive. and we could level nature pretty darn quick. using water as a crutch and gain a water bonus of 1-2 if it's a ferice battle or some shit.
>>
>>31185210
I feel like both are needed.

We will obviously do other types, this will just increase our control and ability to multi task while meditating on many different elements.
>>
>>31185231
not now. I recommend we focus on chysa and ourselves for now.
we don't want to play with lava. Not right now at least. when we're half way to grand master we could prolly take enough water from the area to defend against a lava blast so we don't lose a limb trying to help him master his arm.

I am down for giving him tips and let him train on his own. how chysa started, so he can gain better control by himself.
>>
>>31185316
>Master his arm
The vatis training would have absolutely nothing to do with his arm. Heck most of it is meditating and controlling his vys and expanding his pool.
It would just benefit his arm control as a side effect
>>
You step kick yourself forward with your back leg, catching her leg as it swings around to strike you and driving your shoulder into her gut. She jabs you, and you tense up expecting to get a few broken ribs for your trouble, but by her standards it's surprisingly gentle. Knocks the wind out of you, sure, but you're still alive. Her leg snaps back and she tries to disengage, but you strike her twice in the abdomen before elbowing her in the cheek. For the rest of the match she's doing her best to put some distance between the two of you and get her guard up again, although towards the end it's just a straight slugging match.

Throughout he fight, you subtly channel vys into your attacks. Not enough to really make a difference, not even enough to effect you really, but just enough that hopefully she can sense what you're doing and get a feel for how it's done. When the two of you eventually call the match, breathing heavy and bodies bruised, you find a comfortable spot to sit in the sand and materialize two cups made of ice from thin air. You hand one to Chryssa when she sits down across from you, filling it with water, and keep the other for yourself.

“You are better with your fist than I expected, the form you use is very difficult to counter.” You shrug. “It's the same style everyone from El-Amin learns. I barely remember all the forms really. If you hadn't been holding back I would've been out of the fight with your first punch.” She shakes her head. “If you hadn't been holding back, you would've paralyzed me before the fight started.”
(1/2)
>>
After you're both rested and you've healed both her and yourself, you broach the magical aspect of the fight. “Were you at all able to sense the vys I was channeling during the fight?” She nods. “Yes, I could. You collected it at the shoulders and then release it with your strike.” You fill your cup with more water. “Did that help you conceptualize channeling at all?” She shrugs her shoulders. “I think, to some extent, yes. I have a better idea of what it should look like now. We still have more sparring to go though.”

I am saying that:
1. if he became vatis, he would have a larger power pool
2. if he became vatis, he would regenerate vys faster
3. higher ranked vatis get efficiency discount to their usages. This applies to enchanted gear too like the earth mace. So it stands to reason that his arm would be more efficient if he learned to be a vatis.

>power is always being sucked from him constantly
We have seen him nearly pass out from vys drain after a couple of shots. Yes power is always being drawn, but it is drawn at an accelerated rate when he actively uses it

“You're right, I still need to figure out sticking things with the pointy end.” She pushes herself up, and stretches out her arms. “Whacking them with the sharp edge is also acceptable. Some swords don't even have pointy ends.” A quick survey of the room reveals a rack of dulled practice weapons in both metal and wooden versions. Most of the wooden swords are just sticks with leather wrapped around the handle, but the blunted metal swords come in all varieties of curved, straight, long, and short blades.

Chryssa selects a long, leaf-bladed metal sword from the rack, not dissimilar to a stretched out gladius. You select a saber with a sharper curve and a thicker blade than most, since it resembles your own actual blade. With your weapons in hand, the two of you return to the sparring ground and square off. You hold the blade in a horizontal guard in front of you, wielding it one handed as that's what you've had the most experience with. She holds her sword confidently in two hands, tip angled towards you.

>>
>>31185738
I am not sure what argument you think you are making here. Or why you say "remember" as if this counters anything I have said.

Also, there is no such thing as a 3 vys blast because the cost depends on your current rank. This means that a blast of size X could be 10 vys for a novice, and 5 for the next tier, 2 for the next tier, 1 for the next tier, and 0 for the next one.

like balls of fire and the such the gun seems to have been made to use magic out of it.

adding to that I would like to practice shooting more fire out of the gun. and using blast out of the gun more accuracy and that could counter what we learned from the book of adding more vys and focusing less on accuracy for a bigger spell for just a bit more vys.
>>
>>31185950
We can channel ranged magic through our sword and spear right?

Though the sword just absorbs vts and releases it in a wave. Can we have that wave be of a certain element? Like a wave of fire?

Guys. Guys. What if we channeled a single point of Vys into our sword every day. Just kept storing more and more and more, never swinging it.

You don't have to wait long for her to come forward. Her strike slips by your guard and the flat of the blade slaps you in the ribs. You grunt and try to swing at her, but she blocks it without much trouble and smashes the blunt edge of her sword against your fingers. The blade slips from your hand as you instinctively let go to make sure nothing is broken, and she pokes you in the chest with the point of the sword. “I win. The guard you're using is only meant to protect against strikes from above. Your reflexes could also use some work.”

A pattern evolves in which you get the snot whacked out of you for a minute at a time, then she lectures you about what you're doing wrong and why you suck so badly, and then you repeat. You get a few good hits in (mainly when you channel a little more vys than was really necessary into a blow), and by the end of the fight you're actually able to dodge or block her hits with some sort of consistency, but it was a fairly one sided fight all things considered.

You do feel like you learned quite a bit though. Pain is a terribly efficient teacher. Hopefully it'll be enough to keep you alive and not stabbed during a real fight. You heal your various welts, bruises, and cuts while Chryssa watches with a vaguely amused smirk. As you finish healing your aches and pains she speaks up. “I think I got a better expression of how to channel vys that round, since I didn't have to focus very hard on the fight itself.” That certainly was a back asswards compliment.

After giving yourself a quick once over, you pick up the blade again. “Lets go another round, this time with feeling.” You give her your best cocky grin in a desperate attempt to convince yourself that you can handle the inevitable beating that is about to come, and then assume your stance. Chryssa nods her head and straightens up, twirling her sword once before assuming a stance.

Ah well. It helps you and it helps her, even if it's painful it's useful. Can't be as bad as some of the things that Grandmaster put his apprentices through. At least you never got sprayed with liquid fire and laughed at until the other apprentices managed to put you out. Maybe you should try screwing with Chryssa like that, just toss her into a pit full of stray dogs or something and let her fend for herself.

You're pulled out of your daydream by the flat of a blade slapping against your shin, knocking you off balance, and after that the fight is on. This is a much more even fight. The two of you push each other back and forth across the sandy fighting grounds. You can't really get a good hit in, though you manage to whack her a few times. She's landing blows noticeably less often than she was the first time around.

The first time she disarms you, she comments that you're a quick learner and makes a few adjustments to your stance. Tells you to keep your feet wider apart, don't block with the edge of the blade so often because you'll chip it. The first time you disarm her, you remind her not to get too cocky lest the student become the teacher. Your arrogance is almost immediately rewarded with a whack to the ribs that nearly knocks you off your feet.

When the two of you are both tired out, Chryssa calls the spar. The two of you discuss mistakes the other made, and ways to avoid making those mistakes in the future. She's doesn't watch you heal your wounds with a smirk this time around, mainly because she has some cuts of her own that need healing.

The apprentice who was punching the bag of sand earlier has left, though the mage still meditates in the center of the sparring ground. The battle has become a siege, as one side (You note, marked by a band of quartz around their heads) has retreated into a small castle made of sand. The other launches rocks from tiny catapults at the walls, rattling their quartz swords against stone shields. The vatis must be rather skilled to maintain such an intricate scenario.

You refill the ice cups you'd created earlier and sit down to watch the battle unfold. Chryssa follows suit. As the siege wears on, a section of the wall collapses and the non-marked sand soldiers rush forward. You note that it's not a mad dash, but rather they're organized into sort of loose battalions, each portion has its own leader who 'gives orders' by pointing. Rather than clash with the enemy at the breech, the quartz-marked soldiers pour stone pots of molten rock down on their enemies. This vatis must be rather skilled with fire as well then.

Though the unmarked soldiers are bogged down by the magma, they eventually get through and start laying into the marked soldiers. The marked soldiers start to route, first one or two, then en masse as more and more are dissolved into the sandy sparring ground under the blows of the unmarked. They make one last desperate stand in the fortress keep, unmarked soldiers forced to bring in a battering ram to break down the doors. It's a fight through the hallways and up the towers of the keep, soldiers being thrown from windows and sand flying every which way. By the end of it, the unmarked soldiers have won what you would call a costly victory. If they fought many more battles like that, they'd be without an army.

As the battle ends, the fortress dissolves into sand. The magma, which has cooled to rock, breaks itself apart as well. The only indication that anything had gone on to begin with is a slight irregularity in the sand of the sparring ground. The vatis, whom you decide must be a Grandmaster in at least one element judging by the coloration of their robes, opens their eyes and stretches luxuriously.

He looks at the two of you and blinks several times. “I didn't realize I had an audience. Did you enjoy the show?” Both you and Chryssa nod. You take the opportunity to speak up. “That was really quite impressive. You know, I consider myself an Earth Vatis of some slight skill, but I don't think I'd be able to work up nearly such a grand display. Would you mind terribly giving a beginner some tips?”

He smirks. “Oh, asking for some free lessons, eh? Just who are you that you shouldn't have to take my class to learn my secrets?”

You materialize a small group of ice bandits and have a team of horsemen, similarly crafted from the water in the air around you, run them down. The bandits were just bait though. They lead the knights into a near-by wood where more wait for them in ambush. As the knights ride by archers, which you noted were absent from his battle of stone, fire arrows from delicate bows of ice. The knights dismount and take cover behind trees, and another team of bandits sneaks around from the other side to finish them off.

The leader falls to his knees in despair before the bandit king, whom you've crafted a small crown for. The bandit king draws a dagger from his flowing robes and draws it across the knight's throat, water leaking out of the gash as he collapses to the ground. “A criminal, an interested party, a friend of the Archmagos, an adventurer. Take your pick, as long as I get to expand my knowledge of the Earth element it doesn't matter.”

The vatis nods their head, speaking to you now as a peer instead of as a (potential) student. “I didn't realize, I assumed you were merely a student freshly graduated. You should consider testing into the master robes soon, if your control is such you can produce water from the air as if it were a simple trick.” You smile. “I'll actually be taking the test at noon in two days.” The vatis snaps his fingers. “Ahh! So that's why the Archmagos sent out the call for the water masters. Well, I'm sure you'll do fine.”

After that the two of you swap trade secrets. He's apparently a master of fire and a grandmaster of earth. He's just started studying the metal element recently and has been making fast progress thanks to his understanding of Earth. He recommends some good books to check out in the library, namely Stone, Gem, and Sand. Apparently it's a book that really goes into depth about what Earth Magic can do and how one should meditate on it.

He also talks about the methods he uses most. He likes to go out to the coast and weaken the cliff face in such a way that it collapses into the sea, forming statues or carvings in their wake. It's good training for weakening armor and weapons in combat, apparently. He also likes the method you just saw, hosting big elaborate battles to train his control.

“Say, you know... this gives me an idea. I bet there would be a lot of interest from the student body in watching two Vatis duke it out with elemental armies.” He rubs his chin for a moment, nodding his head. “So you propose we set up an arena of sorts, charge them entry to watch?” You shrug your shoulders. “Maybe, at some point. For now I was thinking of making it a big event in the entry hall. I have a friend who could take bets. We split the profits fifty fifty.”

The two of you hash out some quick rules. Each unit will be worth a 'point' and can be any sort of small unit. That means you can have plenty of archers and he can have testudo formations of sand warriors. Units like siege engines will cost two points, and 'giants' will cost three. Things like soldiers made of quartz or stone will also be more expensive. All soldiers on the battlefield must be created at the start.

After some negotiation, the two of you agree on a one thousand point match, and leave the sparring ground. It doesn't take long to find Profectus in the library reading an Ancient Rhynian book on fire magic which would probably cost you an arm and a leg to actually buy. You convince him without much trouble to start stirring up excitement for the match ahead, and as the two of you take your positions in the entry hall, him on one side and you on the other, a small crowd has already gathered.

He sets about organizing an intricate network of trenches and fortifications, organized around a central fortress. You, on the other hand, construct an elaborate ice city with a tall spire in its center. You surround it with a thick wood, and cover the whole thing in a layer of snow. You're going to need to tempt him out of those defensive positions if you want to make full use of that training the Vys Array forced into you via spinal tap.

You create six hundred horse archers and have them sally worth, riding around the battle ground displaying their banner (a snowflake pierced by an icicle) to the gathering crowd of onlookers and hosting wrestling matches in the snow. Meanwhile, he raises his own banners (a diamond clenched in a stone fist) and troops materialize to man the trench works. You note he has a mix of heavy stone soldiers carrying large shields and larger swords, and smaller sand troops wielding quartz spears. He also has a few catapults stationed behind the trenches and men manning the fortress itself.

The battle begins with your horse archers firing the first shots. The hooves of their frozen horses clatter against the marble floor of the entry hall, their bows quietly twanging as they fire arrows at the enemy lines. The arrows shatter against the stone soldiers, but the sand soldiers dissolve under their withering fire as they ride by.

When he sends forwards his stone soldiers to take care of your horse archers, your infantry mob them and force them back. They work blades into the joints and faults of the stone, prying it apart. Many are lost, but the stone crumbles. Eventually he's forced to withdraw his stone soldiers, catapult fire covering their retreat and devastating your massed infantry, forcing you to pull them back and wage skirmish warfare against his larger troops. Fortunately, your horse archers are too agile and too spread out to really be valid targets of bombardment.

The battle is evenly matched. You'd never break through his lines, and it will take forever to pinprick him to death. Unfortunately he's not taking the bait and leaving the trenches to attack just yet.

His infantry proper suddenly go up and over the trenches, charging your horse arches with their spears in one massed advance. It catches you by surprise, and some of your troops fall before you can order a withdraw. You move your infantry forward to cover their retreat, and it becomes a brutal slog in the open field of your infantry versus his. Initially, you have the advantage because you have archers supporting your line. After he moves in with his few giants and his stone and quartz soldiers though your infantry is broken. The horse archers retreat and dismount at the edge of the woods, dispersing into bands of ten to thirty and hiding in the woods. Your infantry route and don't stop until they reach the ice city, where they take up defensive positions.

He follows your infantry into the woods, and you let him get deep into your territory before you spring your ambush. His forces are attacked from all sides, trees collapsing to block his escape routes and archers harrying his lines. He starts to take massive losses as order breaks down and he breaks his army apart to assault each of your bands of archers. Since he doesn't have ranged capabilities though it just becomes a chase through the woods, and he frequently loses sight of your troops only to be ambushed again.

He beats a retreat after taking massive losses, and your archers follow him once more into the open field. They mount up again and run down the routing soldiers, spearing them on lances or picking them off from afar. Your infantry leave the relative safety of the city to storm the trenches, taking them from the shadow-force that remained behind to man them. The battle has turned decisively in your favor!

You send your horse archers and infantry to the siege engines, hoping to capture the slow-moving catapults before he can get them behind the walls of his fortress. They're under heavy guard, and he's fighting viciously to keep them. At the same time as the catapult offensive you split off a portion of your troops to mop up any remaining Earthen scum in the trenches. You find that he's left a few traps for you, pitfalls with spikes at the bottom mostly, but you manage to clear out any stragglers with only minimal losses.

Eventually the catapults are seized. Partially, at least. He destroyed several of them in a last ditch effort to deprive you of siege weaponry, but you managed to secure three working catapults. You think that at this point your victory is inevitable, you need only bring down his fortress walls and the battle will be all but over. You start to get maneuver the catapults into positions and materialize ice boulders to load the catapults with. Your archers take potshots at the Earth soldiers manning the fortress walls in the meantime.

You have his catapults begin shelling his own positions, the walls withstanding the assault for now, but it is inevitable that eventually they will fall. As ice boulders rain down upon his fortress, some sort of stone construction is wheeled up to the walls. They remind you vaguely of those statues you saw in the Rhynian ruin, the ones covered in that fleshy growth. There is a boom shortly after he has the constructions positioned, and the barrels of the construction slam back as smoke spews forth from the bore. There is an explosion as the shell it fired lands amongst your massed troops, sending ice shards and water flying everywhere.

By the gods! He's got tiny guns! The bombardment keeps up, shells landing throughout your formations and scattering them. You're forced to get your soldiers into cover, some falling back to hide within his trenches and others surrounding the catapults to defend them. You don't know how much of this

It doesn't look like he has many of these tiny siege guns, but if he manages to destroy your three catapults this battle will end in stalemate. You'd be forced to either storm his walls and try to batter down his gates, or settle in for a siege. Since stone troops don't eat, drink, or sleep the second method would probably prove ineffective, and the first is likely to result in massive losses.

His artillery knocks out one of your catapults early, but the remaining two keep up the pressure on the walls. They start to crack, and crumble. Flakes of stone chip off and the ramparts have been reduced to rubble. At one point, a big chunk falls off but the walls themselves remain standing, if weakened. It isn't long after that when another one of your catapults is pulped by an artillery shell, and you're forced to move your last remaining siege engine to throw off his aim.

It's a close thing, but you're eventually victorious. His walls crumble and his soldiers charge forward in one last glorious attempt to win this battle. Your infantry meet them, with support from your archers. It's a tough fight, his last remaining giant taking out a fair portion of your infantry before they manage to bring it down, but eventually the battle is won. You send in some archers and infantry to mop up the last of his troops in the castle, but the battle is over.

When you finally open your eyes, you see a crowd of somewhere between fifty and a hundred apprentices packed into the large entry hall. They sit by the ponds, at the edge of the battlefield, on the walkways, just about anywhere they can and Profectus is sitting cross legged behind you, counting out stacks upon stacks of silver coins. It seems your little endeavor was rather successful, all told.

There is some clapping, a few cheers. Quite a lot of grumbling. It doesn't seem like you were the favorite to win, judging by the amount of people who looks upset with the outcome. Then again, that just means more money for you and the Earth Vatis, who's name you neglected to ask.

Okay, so now that we've invented magical wargaming, how do we invent magical RPGs? Figures and scenery out of ice? It seems like with all five elements trained you could make some really awesome terrains to adventure through.
>>
You let your various soldiers and animals dissipate into the air, and do the same with your forest and city. You use some water to clean up any dust that might have been created from your little battle and then let that disperse as well. For his part, your opponent repairs any chips in the marble and gets rid of his trenches and fortifications, the castle receding into the marble tile. Once the battlefield is good as new, the two of you stand and approach one another. After a firm handshake, you both turn and wave to the gathered crowd. A polite cheer goes up in response.

“You know, that was really quite fun. I think I might go ahead and formalize a set of rules for this sort of thing.” You smile. “I think that sounds like a great idea, as long as I get a little credit, a mention at least.” He looks confused for a moment. “You wouldn't want to help me make them?” You shrug your shoulders. “I don't tend to stay very long in one place, I'm something of a vagabond. I'd be happy to contribute whenever I'm in town though.”

Now that the crowd has started to disperse, the two of you approach Profectus. You also note that Chryssa has shouldered her way through the milling apprentices to join you. “I'm Mikhael by the way, Mikhael Abdul-Hakim.” He claps you companionably on the shoulder. “Demetrios Zabat, a pleasure.” He turns his attention to Profectus. “So! How much did we make?”
(1/2)
>>
Profectus finishes dishing out the last of the winnings to the luckier, or perhaps wiser, apprentices who bet on you. “Two hundred seventy eight silver all told. I guess that will be a hundred thirty nine for you, and a hundred thirty nine for us.” He nods, and the money is divided. A tidy sum, really. You could make a living off hosting these sorts of matches if you really wanted to.

lol we should make a name and collect royalties.
We could say that our royalties go towards the academy. As a way to show thanks, and gain some good will amoungst the staff. That + archmages good standing with us might open the doors to let us study
>>
>>31191215
study for free, or atleast a steeply reduced student fee to join the academy.
any way that lets us study the books for free.
>>
>>31191215
I am not sure royaltees exist. also, if you are too eager to prematurely monotize you can torpedo the whole thing. better get your name out there first, gain some fame.

Also, mfw a bunch of people are going to sign up for mage college to learn just enough to be able to play table top games :)
>>
>>31191269
ok, replying to self here. I thought of a good way to monotize.
Organize matches (and the associated gambling), concessions (food/drinks) to the crowd, etc. Basically, form a proper league... think like the NBA or NFL, but for mage duels.
>>
>>31191269
eh we can leave it up to them.
Just leave information that if a game appears out of it, royalties goes to the academy. or something of the sort. and if it builds up from there they can make a table top game out of it for non mages. :P
my point is not to make money but to get us free access to books.
>>
You look around at the dispersing crowd and scratch your chin absentmindedly. “You know, I bet there is a load of money to be made selling things like rulebooks to these apprentices. You could even sell premade stone figures to non-vatis along with the rulebooks, make a ton of money that way.” He smiles. “I was thinking of setting up some kind of club that runs gladiatorial-style games in the training room, then charging an admission fee.”

An idea strikes you. “Why not both? You could set up some kind of professional circuit, then charge an admission fee to watch the matches. Then at those matches you could sell rulebooks to the spectators so they could imitate the matches they're watching at home.” He nods along, but raises a good question. “What about after that though? Eventually everyone will own the rulebook, and our revenue stream will vanish.”

Profectus adds his two cents to the conversation. “Well that's easy. Just toss out a new edition every few years with rule changes or new aspects added. Maybe only start off with rules for Earth vs Water, but release supplements for fire, metal, and nature magic. You could also intentionally make errors in the rulebook and then release errata later to explain those errors.”

Chryssa also butts in. “You could also release something like maps of battlefields with interesting features, so all they'd have to do is recreate the maps. Maybe release novels and short stories in predetermined settings tied to the rulebooks. Maybe even expand the rules to accommodate things like adventurers diving ruins or something of the like.”
(1/2)
>>
The four of you make your way towards the library, tossing ideas back and forth the whole while. You find a nice secluded table to plot your get rich quick scheme, and someone pulls out a piece of paper to start taking notes. You end up filling almost thirty pages full of rules, regulations, fun facts, and various little irrelevant blurbs. Eventually it gets late though, and everyone starts to get a little tired. Demetrios is the first to announce that he's going to bed. Profectus follows, saying he'll meet you in the suite. Chryssa says she plans to meditate instead of sleep tonight anyway.

>She's got the right idea, head back to the suite and meditate.

What royalties? Royalties is a modern concept based on intellectual property. A concept I doubt they even have. And even in modern times you don't get royalties for derivative games which are sufficiently different (od&d might have been groundbreaking, but it didn't make all that money). And it is very easy for people to come up with derivative games.

I would be better to try to build a business around organizing matches. Rent stadiums, sell tickets to spectators, cut deals with food vendors and bookies, offer prize monies to winners. those kind of things.

“I think I might hit the town. I need to celebrate my victory.” Chryssa nods her head. “I will join you, to ensure no one is dragging anyone out of bathhouses or prisons in the morning.” You roll your eyes exaggeratedly, a gesture you haven't made since you were fourteen and your master said that there was no way you would survive being thrown into the middle of the ocean and left there. You showed him! “I'm not Prof. I have some modicum of self control and common sense.” You pat your courier's bag. “Plus, I'm rich. I could pay my own bail.”

“Says the man who got banished from his native land.” Chryssa retorts. You actually feel a twinge, just a twinge, of anger and regret at the mention of it. It's not as stinging a wound as it used to be though. “Well, I'm not looking to repeat that travesty. Now if you're coming, come on!”

The two of you set off and leave through the large front doors. The rain has stopped, finally, and the clouds overhead moved on. The air smells vaguely sweet, and Chryssa mentions that some common plant always smells that way after the rain. It's pleasant, though slightly overpowering. The two of you mount up on your respective guar and set off into the city, to try and find some sort of entertainment.

You set off for the Entertainment District, where the Golden Cat was. It had things besides disreputable bathhouses after all. Plenty of bars and shops. The walk there is calm as usual, a few guards patrolling the sidewalks, but as you get closer and closer the streets become more and more crowded. Eventually you're forcing your way through thickets of milling pedestrians, who seem reluctant to move out of the way even despite your guar. This area is as crowded as ever despite the earlier storm, with Vatis dancing and displaying their powers at every corner. There are also plenty of bars, whore houses, stores selling fake antiquities, and snake oil salesmen offering miracle cures to every ailment imaginable.

You end up picking a more respectable looking bar with a big, burly bouncer sitting out front. Two women dressed in revealing silk and lace outfits dance next to the doorway, shooting flames from their hands and making fire dance according to their whims. They're Pidjatan, their ears pointed and skin dark. They're also quite talented, and a crowd of onlookers stares mystified as they weave their way around one another.

Inside, the place is packed. There are two seats available at the bar, but not a single table in the entire establishment is free. Waitress bustle this way and that carrying trays of drinks and food stacked high, doing their best to serve every table and every customer as quickly as possible. You notice a familiar face sitting in one corner talking to himself. That adventurer from Licae. The young, weird, one who you spoke with your first day there. He looks no worse for wear.

You decide the loner could use some company, and slide into his booth across from him. Chryssa slides in next to you. For a few minutes the adventurer doesn't notice you, seemingly waxing nostalgic about the architecture of Rhynian ruins as best you can tell. Eventually he sees you sitting across from him and damn near jumps out of his skin. “Gods! How long have you been sitting there? You know it's rude to easedrop on someone else's conversation!” Chryssa says. “I'd hardly call talking to oneself a conversation. Co-nversation. Requires two people.”

He ruffles, squaring his shoulders and pulling himself up to his full height. “Ma'am, I'll have you know talking to yourself is healthy! It helps you clarify your thoughts and put plans together! Don't go counting me off as loony just yet.” You cut in at that point. “You were at Licae to dive the Rhynian ruin discovered there, right? How'd that go?” He looks at you confused for a moment. “Oh, pretty well I suppose. It looks like someone beat us inside though. The whole place was basically emptied out except for constru-... wait a minute. Don't I know you?”

You reach your hand across the table and give him a firm handshake. “I'm Mikhael” Chryssa introduces herself with “Chryssa Avci, a pleasure.” After your introductions, he pushes himself up. He nearly ends up knocking the tables over. “OH YOU ASSHOLES!” He shouts, getting the entire bar's attention. “Suck it? Really? You WROTE SUCK IT in the table! I can't tell you how many people would pay for the opportunity to kick your ass right now!”

If not for that, you would've been stuck with the rest of us!” You respond, grinning. “You didn't answer my question, how did you eventually get past?” He grumbles something under his breath before responding. “We built a bridge, and then tied ourselves to the railing.” Oh, now you've got him. “So you used my idea?” He get defensive. “Yeah! So what?!”

It turns into a drawn out argument about whether or not he should ultimately thank you for helping you get past, or shank you for screwing him over. Eventually he concedes defeat. “Fine! Thank you for helping me be screwed over! If not for you I would've died trying to get past that damned generator like the dozens of others just like me!” After that, you order the table a round of drinks to make up for kind of giving him the shaft. He orders top shelf liquor since you're buying, Chryssa gets a bottle of expensive wine to share between the three of you, and you just get beer. Funny the guy paying gets the cheapest item.

He shares a few stories about what happened after you left. They finally broke through the generator's barrier and blundered into the ruin proper. Found a whole bunch of dead constructs and empty rooms, then promptly left. Apparently a lot of the adventurers involved have some sort of begrudging respect for you, but blame you for the lives lost.

“Gentlemen! Gentlemen! Relax!” You raise your hands placatingly under their collectively withering glares. “I'm just hoping to strike up a little conversation amongst my compatriots! No need to be so hostile. Can I buy you all a drink?” One of them, a tubby man with a magnificent moustache responds immediately. “Ab-so-lutely my friend! By me as many drinks as you'd like!”

The others begrudgingly follow suit, allowing you to stay for now. While you all wait for drinks to arrive, they go around and introduce themselves. The tubby, enthusiastic one starts. “I'm Lord Hodei the Third! A pleasure to make your acquaintance!” He's followed by a weedy gentleman with a somber face. “Lord Spiros. A pleasure.” A samja speaks next. “Lord Rahat. Elected head of the Third Division.” Finally, the last of them speaks up. “Just call me Onur. I'm the military might of these three chucklefucks.”

So that's why there're all those statues all over the place!

Best explanation for it I've seen in a fantasy setting.
