You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to battle the BETA, aliens who dominate much of Europe and Asian and who threaten to extinguish humanity. You are currently performing field tests of the European Union's new Tactical Surface Fighter, the EF-2000 Typhoon. That means charging at about ten thousand BETA without backup just to see if you can make it out alive.

Although technically, Elaine is backing you up. She's just mostly there to keep a visual on you, and she has orders to bail out if anything goes wrong. In hindsight, this was probably not a good idea, but they don't pay you to think until OF-3 or 4. All you need to do is kill as many aliens as you can, as fast as you can.

Still, it'd be easier if you didn't have passengers riding in the cockpit's harness and back seat.

"All of the Typhoon's systems are green." Mary taps at her keyboard and looks at the engineering data projected on her retinal HUD. "I'll continue to monitor its status and notify you of any issues."

"I'm connected to the Arthur squadron tactical network," Vivian says from behind you. "The BETA formation has been encircled. I now have a full display of the battlefield. Extrapolating navigational data and firing solutions..."

"I'll have a look at it." You press a few buttons on your console and bring up a map of the battlefield on your HUD. It's an impression 3D reconstruction based on the same software used to run simulation. You can zoom in and out and tilt the angle to get a different view. The data comes from the Arthur squadron TSFs that are overlooking the formation, so there are a few blind spots, highlighted in red, that show only the estimated numbers and positions of BETA, but it's still an impressive piece of equipment. With a dedicated camera network and TSFs scouting out the blind spots, you could get total coverage of the battlefield. Despite the current limitations, it's still much more precise than the usual satellite coverage.

A single TSF pilot couldn't possibly keep track of all the data, but in a dual-seater, it means you can focus entirely on the enemy in front of you while Vivian watches over the rest of the battlefield and makes sure you don't take a wrong turn. In a way, it's extremely liberating.

You switch back to your default display.

"How's the tactical console," Mary asks.

"It's a bit confusing," Vivian says. "I feel like I'm starting to get a headache, but I'm still okay. Maybe I'm just not used to the HUD."

"We'll go over it after the mission," Mary says. "Ergonomics is one of our top design priorities."

"Of course," Vivian says. "We can talk about it over lunch."

"Dinner, most likely." Mary smiles at you. "Or do you think you can get us back to base by noon, Julian?"

"With these odds, I don't think I'd have enough bullets." You open a channel to Elaine's TSF. "Arthur 2, this is Arthur 3. We are approaching the area of operation. Are we cleared to begin?"

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 2," Elaine says. "We have confirmation: No Laser-class BETA in the area. You may proceed with the evaluation."

"Roger that. Proceeding with the evaluation."

>Start with a few fly-bys. There are no lasers, so you might as well take the advantage of altitude.
>Pick off the smaller BETA. You should get a feel for live combat before diving into it.

Standard operating procedure says to mow down the Destroyer line first so they don't overwhelm the friendly battle line and you're hear for live action evaluations, not to play around. That's what the test pilots. Playing with the EU's new toys is more like bonus pay for you.

"Vivian, I'm going for the Destroyers first." You unlock your assault cannons. "Keep targeting support off for now. I want to see how the Typhoon handles itself first."

"Understood," Vivian says. "I have a visual on the Destroyers. Targeting assistance is deactivated. There are no hostiles immediately behind the Destroyer charge. You can proceed."

There must be a few thousand Destroyers throughout the formation, but there are only a few hundred head towards you right now. That's more than you can handle on your own, but that's mostly because you're only carrying so much ammo. Defensively, this is child's play.

"This is your last chance to get off, Mary," you say. "I can't promise it won't get rough."

"You don't need to be so considerate of me," Mary says. "Monitoring live combat evaluations is part of my orders. Besides, Vivian might get jealous."

"No, I don't mind," Vivian says. "And the Destroyer formation is fraying a little. It looks like they're having problems going through the rubble."

That opening is more than enough for you. You press the afterburner to surge forward and prepare to fire.

You charge at the Destroyers in a diagonal and line up at shot at their flanks. Short bursts of cannon fire down a few of the aliens and create a wide opening in the formation. You burst through the opening. You turn your TSF to face the back of the Destroyers and stall the engines. Your landing is rough, but you keep your Typhoon's balance and open fire on the Destroyers again.

"Impressive landing," Mary says. "There's some strain on the legs, but it's within acceptable limits."

"I didn't have time for a slow brake," you say. "The Destroyers are just at the limit of my cannons' effective range."

The Destroyers are still continuing their charge.

Yeah, I kind of wanted to vote the other way for this. Sounds like we are going in for more Destroyers. Hold on to your butts!
>>
>>31166844
While you do need some variety for the sake of a proper evaluation, you would normally go after the Destroyers in this situation and you don't want them flanking you later on anyway. You probably won't be able to kill them all, but you can do enough damage that they won't be a threat anymore. The rest of the squadron can finish them off.

You fire up your engines forward and head for the edge of the Destroyer line.

"I'm hitting the Destroyers again, just to be on the safe side," you say. "Vivian, have we got any problems at our back?"

"Negative," she says. "The BETA are moving towards us, but the Destroyers outpaced them so much that it'll take time for them to reach us. If we're moving towards the Destroyers, we'll be able to gain the initiative on them once they get in range."

You close in on the Destroyers. They haven't started turning towards you yet, and you'll be in range in just a few seconds.

>Go for a normal run.

"Vivian, let's test the targeting assistance systems," you say.

"Understood," Vivian says. "Linking targeting systems to the tactical network. Targets have been identified."

The change to your HUD is subtle. The targets in your immediate visual range are unchanged, but red arrows appear to paint targets that are hidden behind cover or other Destroyers. You also notice that your targeting reticule stabilizes even though you're flying. You're a good pilot, but nobody can fly perfectly straight. The system must be linked to the altimeter.

"No problem with the targeting assistance systems so far," you say for Mary's benefit. "Engaging the enemy."

You open fire in short bursts of 36mm bullets. From the back, that's really all you need to take down a Destroyer. After every kill, the targeting systems pull you to the next nearest target, but the system is also very responsive to your own commands. All it takes is a slight movement to move to a different target.

"The system flags dead targets when they decelerate," Vivian says. "It's not completely accurate, especially if the target is so wounded that it has to slow down, but is still alive, but it should account for normal deceleration, such as from a target caught in a turn. It's very useful, if you want to rapidly move through targets."

"It seems to be working well so far," you say. "Let's try something else."

You unlink your two assault cannons and set them to track different targets. Under normal circumstances, it's not an easy trick, even for you, but a good targeting system makes it a lot easier and your current system more than delivers. Without fail, it tracks your two cannons independently of each other and picks the most efficient firing solution, even suggesting an additional target when both your cannons are pointed at the same Destroyer. A poorly-coded system could very well push both cannons towards a different target. Whoever coded this system really knew what they were doing.

By the time you run out of ammo and have reload, you've killed several hundred Destroyers.

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 1," Group captain Hall says through your communication channel. "We'll pick off the stragglers. Continue with the evaluation."

"Understood." You turn to Mary. "What's the performance evaluation for the targeting system."

"Considering your kills and your usual combat performance, ammo consumption is 10% below the mean," she says. "That's quite efficient."

"The rest of the BETA herd will be in range soon," Vivian says. "We'll need to deal with them."

"Let's test aerial combat," you say. "Vivian, keep the targeting systems as they are."

"Understood," she says. "Are you going to fly inverted again?"

"Probably not." You slowly bring your TSF up to a higher altitude. "I'll just check to see if the guns can track targets during dives and such. The view will be different from nape-of-earth, so it might mess with the systems."

"Do let me know if there are any problems," Mary says. "The targeting system uses multiple redundant sensors - seismometers, infrared scanners, motion detectors, that sort of thing - to identify targets. Mass BETA formations have historically made it impossible to differentiate individual targets and we're trying to solve that problem."

"Duly noted." You open a channel to Elaine. "Arthur 2, this is Arthur 3. We are moving on to aerial combat."

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 2," Elaine says. "Ready when you are."

Your TSF ascends until you can almost see the entire BETA formation. It's mostly Grapplers, Tanks and the smaller infantry strains, but you spot quite a few Forts and more than a few Destroyers. Some members of Arthur squadron are even engaged with small pockets of BETA, but that's not your problem. You have your job and they have theirs.

"Commencing aerial combat."

You unleash an absolute massacre upon the BETA and ruthlessly mow down the Tanks and Grapplers and just about everything else that stands in your way. Unfortunately, because of the high concentration of targets, there isn't much for the targeting systems to do. In fact, they're not even painting targets.

"It looks like the targeting assistance doesn't work from this distance," you say.

"No, I have targets," Vivian says. "The current level of magnification is sufficient to identify individual targets, but it can't forward them to the pilot without overwhelming the HUD. It's still providing support though."

"Excellent," Mary says. "Julian, let me know when the system starts painting targets again, and if it clutters your HUD."

"Will do." You release your magazines, killing yet more BETA by dropping the things right on their heads, and reload your guns. "I only have two magazines left, so this shouldn't take much longer."

It does not take much longer at all. You continue murdering your way through the BETA effortlessly. They're incapable of hitting you without lasers, but you have absolutely no trouble hitting them.

"Ammo expenditure is still 10% below the mean," Mary says. "The systems really are working."

You drop your magazines again and holster your cannons on their racks. There are still thousands of BETA left and you still have so many tests to run.

The whole point of getting this cockpit was to use it as a command centre for Hive infiltration and get the Camelot group another commanding officer to rebuild Bedivere squadron. It's time to see if Vivian can handle herself.

"Arthur 1, this is Arthur 3," you say. "Requesting permission to proceed with the command console evaluation."

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 1. Permission granted." There is a slight pause. "Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1. Until further notice, Arthur 3 is in command of this area of operation. Proceed accordingly."

"Wait, what?" Vivian looks at you from her console. "The command console doesn't have anything to do with the Typhoon itself."

"Neither does the targeting assistance system," Mary says. "Just relax and do what you always do. The equipment you have here is better than what you usually have to work with, isn't it? You've done well so far, so there shouldn't be any problems at this point."

You hear Vivian take several deep breaths.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 3," Vivian says. "Formation Double-Wing 5 on Arthur 3's current position."

"Yes, ma'am."

That formation can't be done with less than three full squadrons, but you bite your tongue. This isn't your decision. Your only job is to follow your orders. Whether you all win or lose is on Vivian's head now.

The rest of the squadron rushes to your position, with the vanguard formed around you. The vanguard forms the central wing, while the middle guard handles your left flanks and the rear guard takes care of the right flanks. With only four TSFs, you can only manage a loose formation, but you make do.

A flight path appears in your HUD.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 3," Vivian says. "Flight paths have been uploaded. Prioritize assault cannons. Do not engage in melee and do not stop to engage targets. Follow the path as directed."

Her orders are followed by another round of acknowledgement. You launch your Typhoon forward, making sure to stay slow enough for Elaine and the rest of the vanguard flight to follow you in their Tornadoes.

Your paths take you to one of the few remaining concentration of BETA, mostly Grapplers and Tanks, but there are also a few Forts. You follow Vivian's flight path and hit them from the side, where their formation's profile is thinnest. After that, it's almost like you're eating them alive. You only have 120mm ammo left, so you gun for the Forts, but the rest of the squadron effortlessly shoots through the smaller BETA. Anything that doesn't go down to Elaine's guns gets taken out by the back of the vanguard.

As tempting as it is to check up on the rest of the squadron, you keep your eyes firmly ahead of you and look for appropriate target. You do have some explosive shells left to shoot at groups of Tanks, but by the time you reach the rendezvous point, your cannons are completely empty.

"Arthur vanguard, objective complete," Vivian says. There is a slight pause. "Arthur middle guard, objective complete. Arthur rear guard, objective complete. Arthur squadron, all objectives complete. No casualties."

"Well done, Vivian," Mary says.

"Thank you."

As dangerous as a Double-Wing 5 formation was in these circumstances, Vivian made it work.

The formation dissolved and the TSFs returned to their designated positions. Only Elaine stayed behind to act as chaser.

Your Typhoon is surrounded by dead BETA, but there are still many Tanks and Grapplers to go around for the melee evaluation. Fuel is getting low, but it's still at an acceptable level.

You effortlessly cleave through the Grappler, and then the next, and then the next. You shift between downward swings, upward swings, horizontal swings, short swings and long swings. You swat Tanks out of the air as they're trying to jump you. You fly around and use altitude to put additional power into your strikes.

The one thing you notice is that you're much faster than you're used to. The preferred European war axe has always been a top-heavy weapon. It has a lot of power and speed to it during a swing, but recovering can be difficult. As a result, pilots who are into melee combat compensate by using their TSF's engines to check their momentum and maintain their balance. The additional power and manoeuvrability of the Typhoon makes it a lot easier, but also means that pilots used to more sluggish TSFs are going to have to adapt.

"Mary, please note that Typhoon pilots will require retraining in melee combat." You place your war axes back on their racks. "The increased speed and manoeuvrability makes melee combat slightly different than it is for a Tornado."

"I'll make a note of it," she says. "Anything else?"

"That's it for now," you say. "I'll have a more detailed report once I've gone over the recordings. Arthur 1, this is Arthur 3. The evaluation is complete."

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 1. Evaluation is confirmed complete. We are with drawing from the area."

With that, Arthur squadron resumes a normal formation and heads back to Dover.

"That was very productive," Mary says. "I hope the rest of our TSF development goes this smoothly. How are you feeling, Vivian?"

"How did you meet those three anyway," you ask.

Elaine hits you hard enough that you feel it through your suit.

The two of you head down to get changed and take a shower. After a quick detour by your room so you can pick up the ribbons and the card you bought, you head over to the Cerberus.

>"If it's handled correctly, this might be the breakthrough the European Union needs to make a serious play for the continent."
>"It's nothing special. Just another TSF."

If the Typhoon were a woman, I'd marry her.
>>
>>31171535
too much hype is pretty bad, especially to a TSFexual
>>
>>31171572
But we got to give her that Robogasm.
>>
>>31171535
Now now, don't disappoint them with hype.

"It's an upgrade on the Tornado, but it doesn't have any innovations. There is some experimental tech we're trying, but that won't be part of the mass production model."

Luna nods sagely.

"I know what you mean," she says. "Technological innovations are few and far between, but a prototype is a good opportunity to see where the TSF platform can go. I wish I'd been able to get my hands on it. Maybe I could drop by some time?"

"I don't see why not." You shrug. "The cockpit is a custom two-seater, and there's always the harness, so I could arrange something."

Luna is staring at you with her mouth wide open.

"Luna, you're drooling," Helga says.

"Is it time for dinner already?" Ilfriede looks at her friends in confusion.

Elaine checks her watch.

"Actually, yeah, it is," she says. "Mind if we join you?"

The three of them lead you to the Cerberus mess for dinner. It's actually a lot better than the fare you usually get. There are potatoes - a lot of potatoes - but they're real and the chef knows how to cook them to keep them interesting. You spend the rest of the evening talking about the Typhoon's specs and describing the training exercise. You don't spill any details on the cockpit, but you figure everything else is fair game. The Cerberus is first in line to get the Typhoon, so they must know the details on paper.

It's incredibly late when you get back to your room. Elaine takes her turn in the shower first. You got in after her and by the time you're done, she's already sleeping soundly in her bed.

You crash in your own bed. You're almost asleep when you hear the door slowly close and open.

"Welcome home, Vivian."

"Did I wake you," she asks.

"No, I was already awake. It's fine."

"Good," she says. "Mary and I spent more time talking than I expected."

You nod silently, your eyes still closed. You don't know whether or not she heard you, but you hear her undress and then the shower gets started again. The sound isn't loud, but it's enough to keep you awake.

It stops after a few minutes and Vivian presumably steps out of the shower.

"Good night," she says.

You open your eyes a crack and see her move towards Elaine's bed.

>"Good night."
>"Actually, do you mind if we talk a bit?"

they will probably do that after they finally do the deed.

"Actually, do you mind if we talk a bit?"

"Sure," she says.

You move over to make some space for Vivian on your bed. Without asking questions, she slips into the bed next to you and closes her eyes. Your arms are touching, but compared to the time you woke up with Elaine sprawled all over you mostly naked, Vivian feels surprisingly... normal. All you can hear is the soft, steady rhythm of her breathing.

"What do you want to talk about?"

>"How was your meeting with Mary?"
>"How did you feel about your first real battle?"
>"What do you want to do after this war is over?"

"How did you feel about your first real battle?"

"It was strange," Vivian says. "I was such a nervous wreck during the Calais operation, but today... When I'm working at the CIC, it feels like I'm just watching people. No matter what happens, there's nothing I can do about it. Today was the first time I really felt like I could control the flow of battle."

She takes your hand it gives it a gentle squeeze. You intertwine your fingers with hers.

"If it makes you feel any better, Calais wasn't your fault," you say. "You learned how to keep your focus fast and you did extremely well today. I didn't think a Double-Wing 5 formation could work with just one squadron, but you made the correct decision."

You wait for her to say something, but you hear only the sound of her breathing. She must have fallen asleep.

You fall asleep soon after.

We need to get us a larger bed so we can all sleep together and not split who Vivian sleeps with.

Also, waking up with Elaine naked on top of you is awesome.

This, a thousand times this.

Lets move our beds together in the centre of the room.
