Welcome to Academy City. The time is night, the weather is magical and the date is August 4.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you are currently blind. No more than a minute after you stepped in to the ‘crucible’ that Teacher had set up you lost your sight. He had reassured you that it was only temporary and recommended that you sit down. You nearly landed too hard on your arse. It was the next part that really creeped you out. Minor pinpricks travelled up and down your limbs. Like an electrical signal it pulsated and once it seemingly found something the sensation crossed the threshold in to pain. Tracing a path up to your eyes you felt as if a drop of scalding water ran along its travels.

The sensation gathered itself in to your eyes and would repeat itself several times. Eventually the torturous procedure came to an end and you regained your sight. Your body felt like it was burning though as you looked around the sensation started to fade. Blinking stung your eyes too but you were doing reflexively, as if you needed to moisten them. Teacher approached slowly and stared in to your eyes. As he did, you notice how he seemed to be outlined in green as if he was bathed in an aura.

“Well looks like it worked,” Teacher smiled and backed off

Wondering about whether you yourself have an aura or not, you give your whole body a once over. There is no outline on your body at all.

“So what am I seeing here?” you ask him.

“Short answer, magic,” he replies, “Would you like the long and boring explanation as well?”

You nod.

“Very well. Lao Tzu’s original eight trigram crucible was actually supposed to melt and distil the Monkey King back down to a Pill of Longevity. Basically an alchemist’s wet dream. Like I said, didn’t work. Anyway, I originally thought it was a spell but it’s actually an alchemical process. What I did is take some redundant and useless nerve endings, transferred them to your eyes and changed them to be a different kind of receptor. They react to what most magicians call mana. Your brain interprets said signals sent from these receptors as colours. What do you see me in?”

“Green.”

“Strange, but then I suppose most spells would look green to you,” he mutters, “Anyway, the important thing is that vampires should show up in red. It’ll be very obvious.”

“Alright so what’s next on your agenda?”

“Ideally, we’d go vampire hunting,” he answers, “But since your eyes are untested, I’d say we patrol around a bit. The physician side of me would recommend that you get some sleep so that your eyes and brain can adjust to your new condition. Either way it’s your choice.”

“You came to find your wife,” you got up and dusted yourself off, “Might as well get started now that we can.”

“Right on,” Teacher agreed.

“Oh and before I forget this thing is this thing permanent or what?”

“It is. When we’re done I can remove it for you if you want.”

Nodding the both of you set off from the park. Honestly, you had no idea where to start but Teacher seemed to so he took the lead. He led you to one of the alleyways and up a fire escape ladder. Once you were on a rooftop, he had you cast your gaze over everything. Some of the buildings blocked line of sight but you were able to make out two yellow silhouettes. It looked like they were heading your way. Farther away you made out several red silhouettes to the west. You’re not sure you could have spotted them if they weren’t hopping on roof tops.

“The yellow group is probably your magician friends, though I’m not too sure,” Teacher answers after pondering what you told him, “The red ones are to the west you say? I guess that narrows my search down somewhat.”

Teacher’s guess turns out to be right as Sivan and Kaoru leapt up and landed on your roof top shortly after.

“Torikov-san, please step away from that man,” Kaoru starts.

You note that they were both armed. Kaoru has her dagger out and Sivan’s bardiche was heft menacingly.

“You have interesting friends kid,” Teacher notes dryly, “Night’s still young.”

He holds out his hand for you.

“Time out,” you make a T with your hand, “No seriously, what’s going on?”

“Please step away from him,” Kaoru repeated, “He is a dangerous man who is using you for his own gain.”

“We made a deal, Sikh,” Teacher’s tone shifted to terse annoyance, “He is doing this out of his own free will.”

“He is doing this out of his own ignorance Teacher,” Sivan starts.

“He’s asked his questions Hazrat and then some,” Teacher replied and turned to Kaoru, “And magicians like you are even more dangerous for him. You work your magics on him without his consent and hope that he remains ignorant to further your own insidious ideals.”

“So says the Father of Jiangshi,” Kaoru shot back.

“Jiangshi?” you ask.

“The Chinese vampires,” Sivan answered without looking away.

“It’s a long story,” Teacher sighed.

They were circling him now.

“Like I said, I’m not a vampire,” he continued, “I don’t drink blood, I don’t eat humans and I don’t engage in any forbidden practices.”

“Last warning Torikov-san,” Kaoru spoke, “If you will not step away from him, we shall drive him off.”

“I won’t take it badly if you ran away now kid,” Teacher shifted his footing slightly, “If you go with them it’ll make things tricky but we can still find Reina.”

You recognised this kind of tension. A fight was going to break out.

You made your decision as Kaoru lunges at Teacher. Your hand rose up and your Ability interrupts. Her eyes shifted focus to you as she falls back to the ground. Teacher’s back was to you his left angled up to deflect a downwards blow from Sivan’s weapon. His right hand has an extended fist that had driven itself in to the vampire hunter’s chest. The force of the blow had knocked off both combatants’ hats.

“We made a deal,” you say, “and I still owe you an answer.”

“I meant before I left Academy City,” Teacher smiled back, “Alright, lesson number two. A fight is about control.”

He pushed the vampire hunter off balance easily. From the looks of it Sivan didn’t look like he could even lift his bardiche any more. He was grasping his chest with his left hand, where his heart was.

“Once one side obtains absolute control they are the winner,” Teacher turned and picked up his hat, “Knock outs and killing are some ways to get it but I prefer Sun Tzu’s method.”

“What’s that?”

“Removing their will to fight. Think you can do that?”

“Torikov-san I know you are not a normally a bad judge of character but please, do not listen him and come quietly,” Kaoru’s plea didn’t match her determined expression.

“Remember how we handled the Anglicans?” you started.

“I recall losing a hand yes,” Kaoru answered.

“That’s exactly it. You lost a hand that time but if Teacher here is as dangerous as you say what are you going to lose this time?”

“I am prepared.”

“Yes but is it necessary? We managed to come to resolve the Anglican problem with words eventually.”

“I cannot presume to know the future. It is also partially up to you to determine whether I must trade my life or not for your protection.”

“My protection? You call leaving me in the dark and expecting me to fall in line whenever you say so protection?”

“I have given you all relevant pieces of information you need. What do you expect more from me?”

“How about some trust then? I forgive you for that time you erased my memory but is it too much to tell me about the spells you cast on me without my knowing or consent?”

She deflated a little at that.

“How can I trust you then? You keep going out to get in fights, hurting others and yourself in the promise. Now you’re working with the Father of Jiangshi, a man who is responsible for the birth of Chinese vampires.”

“It is to my eternal regret,” Teacher did not deny it, “But I am simply looking for my wife.”

“Your wife is a vampire!” Kaoru retorted before turning back to you, “For this once I will trust you. If you betray my trust, I will wash my hands of you.”

She put away her dagger before helping Sivan limp to the edge of the building. A wisp of green “smoke” swirled in to your sight turning yellow as it crossed halfway between you and Kaoru’s hair. She left without a fight.

They drink blood and have infinite life force, because they are immortal, which means they have infinite mana, which means they can do anything they want and supercharge any spell far beyond what it should ever be capable of with no repercussions at all. That's all that is actually confirmed about them, IIRC.

They're also so incredibly hard to find that no one is even sure they exist. Even Crowley wasn't sure until Aisa came along.

And they've gone the whole series, through multiple near-Gods coming along, without getting involved or apparently being hurt in any way.
>>
>>31145399
Can you kill them with sunlight or driving a stake through their heart?
>>
>>31145564
Nope.

>The magical energy that magicians used could have been described as similar to gasoline. In other words, using their lifespan and life-force, the “crude oil”, was refined via breathing, blood flowing, and thinking into “gasoline” for simpler use.

>Thus, magicians were not omnipotent. No matter how they sought for high-leveled magic, the amount of gasoline was finite.

>However, the certain creature had no such limitation.

>That certain creature had the ridiculous characteristic of immortality, meaning that they possessed infinite magic power. Even if the Earth’s resources were to eventually run dry, the magical power of the creatures would continue on.

>Cain's descendants: the vampires.

>They were, for certain, not the feeble creatures depicted in fiction that could be dealt with by a cross or sunlight. In fact, one was enough to initiate a nuclear-level global calamity.
>>
>>31145564
Nope. You'd probably need a surprise attack to pull it off even if it did, so good luck. Basically, it's just about the worst possible case for everybody and anybody who isn't Deep Blood.

“Could have been worse,” you spoke after Kaoru left, “I consider her a friend.”

“Then let us be done with this quickly.”

You both started towards the west. You were heading towards School District 17.

“How you make an entire subset of vampires by the way?” you asked Teacher.

“I guess I have some time to kill,” he lapsed in to thought for a bit, “How much do you about how magic is done?”

“Belief right?”

“The short version yeah. The Jiangshi came in to being through belief and it is all my fault,” he hung his head, “My name is Zhuge Liang and historically, I died in 234 aged 53.”

You jumped about a metre back.

“I had originally wanted to extend my life by twelve years at the Wu Zhang Plains but it was disrupted by an enemy attack. The ritual extended my life obviously but it wasn’t by twelve years, but twelve million years. It also made me die of illness, as was ordained by the Heavens, but I woke up soon after I was interred at Mount Dingjun. I suppose the grave keepers saw me. It probably spawned several legends before a scholar during the Qing dynasty codified it in his grimoire. I am not a Jiangshi and never was but the belief was there so they must exist. As a result, they call me many titles. Some even call me the Second Progenitor, father to a race of monstrous and definitely magical creatures. The First was definitely Cain.”

“Well that’s my story, whether you believe it or not is up to you,” Teacher concluded his tale, “Now I think we’re here.”

But in general I would assume we would be a little bellow her or so. We could probably take a sister down and have a decent fight against lesbian assuming we didn't just shoot her. The area attackers or the people around her though could deck us out.

Man I really don't think so. Hell, most of the people on the tier below Kuroko can wreck us.

You didn’t leave. You only stood with your back to Teacher as several figures dropped down. Their figures were draped in a pulsating red aura though you’re not sure if that was your enhanced sight or an actual article of clothing they held. Your eyes strained to stay open and your head started to hurt. Blinking alleviated it somewhat.

“Why are all my students so foolish and slow?” Teacher loudly complained.

“What is the crystal of cold, a shower of sleet and the serpent’s onslaught?” one of the figures intoned.

Nothing happened so far and you seriously expected more from these so-called vampires. Then Teacher tackled you out of the way. You managed to catch solid balls impacting where you once stood. They were made of ice. It didn’t stop there and Teacher was pulling you along until you yourself were able to get up and run. Amidst the laughter, one of the figures broke off in pursuit you both.

“What is a swirling stream, a wide hot spring and the ground of fish?”

You stumbled as your feet sank in to a really deep puddle. You were sure it wasn’t there earlier as Teacher lost his grip on you.

“What is the bark of rivers, the wave’s roof and the doomed man’s undoing?”

Frost did not just accumulate, it entombed Teacher. His expression full of worry.

“Now, what do we have here?”

If it wasn’t a vampire then it was definitely a magician. His smirk betrayed his intentions. He was going to play with you.

He just trapped Teacher in ice. That alone spoke of his level of power and he was definitely out of your league.

“Just someone trying to make good his word,” you answered.

It elicited a laugh, a chilling one. You saw it as he laughed. In his mouth were two long pointed canines.

“Here I thought curfew would be enough. No matter, I riddle you this. What is the children’s scourge, the battle’s mark and the canker’s seat?”

You didn’t get to answer as several lines appeared on your shirt. You recognised blood. It was yours as the pain started. Crisscrossing your body, you felt it. Lines upon lines were being cut and wedged opened. It started from your chest but it started moving along your body and headed towards your limbs. The only reason it stopped was because your tormentor found a large icicle through his heart.

“You!” he turned to snarl at his assailant.

Teacher stood behind him, a white fan in his hand though covering most of his face. It was made of pristine white feathers and set in a golden handle.

“Lesson number three, when in doubt, double check,” Teacher’s voice was smug.

Ripping out the icicle, the vampire turned and threw it back at Teacher in one smooth motion. Teacher paid little to attention to the being pierced in the heart and didn’t break his stride as he moved closer.

“Since when were you were the impression that I could be killed?” he asked the vampire.

As the vampire was distracted you,

Are the riddles just part of a spell or if we answer them correctly it ends its effects? or do we win a prize? Like cake or shoes or another day to live
>>
>>31149623
Part of a spell. Can you figure them out without looking it up?
>>
>>31149695
Probably not I think the first one is the cold or ice
and the second one might be pain

Slowly you pulled yourself away around the corner, bleeding and in pain. But you weren’t going to miss this. Even if you had to staunch the bleeding through feeling and half attentive, tou could not, would not, avert your eyes. Sure, you didn’t have magic or understood it like Teacher or a long-lived vampire could but you could see it. Teacher only nodded imperceptibly once you were behind cover.

“I may not be immortal like you,” Teacher was surely smiling behind his fan, “but I don’t need to be.”

The green mana that enveloped Teacher coalesced in to a ball and shot forward like a beam, removing the vampire’s arm. Far from inconvenienced the vampire retaliated with blow that twisted Teacher’s neck a full rotation. The white fan came down regardless accompanied by a swath of flame that consumed the pair of inhuman beings. Only the vampire started screaming.

“Oh, are you perhaps not accustomed to being burned alive?” Teacher jeered.

He had stepped out of the fire unscathed. The vampire crawled out, his clothing burning and his flesh cooked but undefeated. You noted how his arm was and body was starting to undo the damage that Teacher inflicted.

“You see, you can have all the mana in the world,” Teacher continued lecturing, “But you still perceive and feel like a normal human. I don’t need to kill you. I only need to break you.”

The fire returned. Over and over the vampire was subjected to the flames until at last it fell silent, its resistance futile.

Teacher only spent a brief moment with the inert vampire before it turned to ashes. When he was done, he gave you a look and a question. The excitement over you notice that you were feeling light-headed.

“Do you know why I let him hurt you?”

You don’t know and you didn’t have the mind to think up an answer nor a response.

“Let it be a lesson then.”

Those were the only words you could catch before unconsciousness took you.

Hmm.

Nah.

Each riddle is a complete spell incantation in itself, judging from what happens each time one finishes. The riddle is a roundabout descriptor of the effect that's gonna be applied.

You are Hazrat Sivan ibn Hakim, Islamic Sufi Mystic and vampire hunter. Thanks to your connections with the Sikh Khalsa you were able to find suitable lodgings in this city of non-believers. The theological is not much your domain, you weren’t here to preach and convert. You were here to hunt. Your host is a young man who has been exposed to the world of magic though he himself isn’t religious or otherwise. You trust he will be a good host given that he has taken the initiative to defend his home from the very monsters you hunt. Of course that trust is then shaken when he approached someone he should not have.

The target of his conversation is an unbelievably old man by the pseudonym of Teacher. You weren’t close enough to eavesdrop of course. It would be incredibly foolish to try. He was the Second Progenitor known as, “The Sleeping Dragon,” and even more powerful than the monsters you hunted. Their conversation done, Teacher walks off in the opposite direction though you’re sure he’s actually coming for you next.

“My my, another Hazrat eh?” he appears behind you as if on cue, “I hope you’re not here for Reina.”

Your response is,
>”Back off on the boy Teacher.”
>”What are you up to this time?”

The spells are a riddle and answer format, where the answer is the result and the riddle is a spell. By describing the phenomenon in a roundabout way, you can cast the spell.

1.
>“What is the crystal of cold, a shower of sleet and the serpent’s onslaught?”

The answer to which is:
>solid balls impacting where you once stood. They were made of ice

Solid ice hitting is hail, right?

2.
>“What is a swirling stream, a wide hot spring and the ground of fish?”

Ground of fish is a wet ground, which is a
>really deep PUDDLE

Of mud. Like you know, quicksand.

3.
>“What is the bark of rivers, the wave’s roof and the doomed man’s undoing?”

>Frost did not just accumulate, it entombed

Is frost or rather a big frost, a big, deep freeze. A flash freeze.

Reina you recall was the ‘wife’ of Teacher. You’re not sure what could drive a man to marry a monster who fed on the blood of humankind. Oh wait, that’s right, he was also practically immortal and long lived as her. That wasn’t the problem though. The problem was that you now had a complication in your duty to hunt vampires. You were sworn to hunt them all down but the man, by the technical definition, was certainly going to get in the way if you made moves against his significant other.

“What are you up to this time?”

He seemingly glided across the distance between the two of you. His gaze measuring you from head to toe and as close as he was you remain outwardly unperturbed.

“Aren’t you a bit young for a vampire hunter?”

“Answer the question Teacher.”

“I’m not up to anything. Reina on the other hand could be. Care to find out what it is?”

“Good luck with that,” another male voice interrupted.

It was leaking huge quantities of mana, nicely suited up and had blonde hair but the clincher was the fangs. Even without your mystic tools you could tell that this was definitely a vampire. Teacher was eying it like he wanted something out of it

Words were unnecessary and any other choice was an anathema to your duty. Thus you let Him in as your hand reaches for your weapon. He is your strength and the reason you can even approach the level the level of the monsters that you hunted. What surprised you however was the fact that Teacher was right behind you.

The abomination’s smug smile turns to a ghastly grimace as your bardiche cleaves through its supposed protections as if it were nothing. Only at the last moment did it bend backwards unnaturally to avoid being bisected. Teacher pins it down with a strike that snaps its shins loudly. Its wails are unheeded as you bring down His judgement on it and decapitate it.

“Would it have killed you to wait?” Teacher complains.

“No, but I cannot show mercy to monsters such as these,” you reply.

“I guess I’ll have to interrogate the next one we come across then.”

“If I don’t kill it first.”

“Is that a challenge?” you nod, “Then you’re on kid.”

Destroying the body of the vampire sets you back in the race to the next but it must be done to ensure the dead remain dead.

You won’t let the heretic get the better of you here and leaving him to his own devices is simply asking for trouble. When you do catch up to him, he is using a street sign as an improvised bludgeon against several more vampires. How he caught their attention you care not as you wade in to the fray.

“Hah I was hoping you’d show up,” he stands back to yours, “These young ones don’t seem to want to talk.”

“Nobody wishes to talk to you if they could help it Teacher.”

“Please, you’re just jealous you’re not my student.”

“As if I have need for your teachings.”

The stop sign cleaves several heads off their respective shoulders.

“Whelp, didn’t mean to do that.”

“Are you sure you are not trying to help me under false pretences?”

He shrugs and gets back to hunting leaving you with several more corpses to dispose of. The night was still young and the competition was going to be fierce.

Interlude end. We continue next Wednesday. I blame everything on DST.
