You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

This isn’t the first time you’ve been on your knees in an alley. It is the first time you’ve set someone on fire, though.

In the corner of your vision, the guy rolls frantically through the snow, the fire gnawing through his cheap jacket. Normally that kind of thing would occupy the centre of your attention, but, at present, more pressing matters have you somewhat distracted. You stare disbelievingly at the awkward, alien shapes that your limbs have adopted.

They’re huge. Huge, spindly, scaled appendages, fingers contorted into a sweeping wireframe of bone. Quivering slightly in the cool breeze, a leathery membrane stretches between the skeletal lines, surfaces still glowing with metabolic heat.

“Wings…” You glance up. Layla has emerged from behind the dumpsters, mouth agape. “D-dude, you have wings.”

You have wings. You’re winged.

How long has Peter been Spiderman? You said Spider Island has already happened but in thread 1 Peter still had glasses.

How good is JJ's DOCTOR DOOM impression?

Is Kraven on the random encounter table?

How does JJ feel about fireworks?

Is Tony Stark known to be Iron Man in the quest's universe or not?

What does Peter sound like?

If we use the wing power, can we take our clawed hand and ball it up into a fist to punch someone?

Our sister was taken by the Brotherhood, right? That attack they did on a genetic facility in upstate New York involved her, I think.

How skinny is JJ?

>[X] Smash the guy’s gun.
>[X] Grab Layla and run. Someone will have heard that gunshot.

Layla reminding you that there is, in fact, a whole world moving around you, you dig up the presence of mind to set aside the matter of your transfigured arms, spotting the thug’s gun lying forlorn amid the snow. Guy must’ve dropped it when you ignited the lighter in his jacket. Can’t blame him – you’d be freaking out at about triple the rate he currently is were the tables turned.

Briefly considering your options, you slam your foot down on the weapon. It shatters and flies apart beneath the force, spilling its payload through the snow. Without a second thought for the man squirming about on the floor beside you, you reach out to grab Layla, before realizing that the three claws fingers not transfigured into wingspan are entirely insufficient for achieving any kind of grip.

She steps back a bit, suddenly a little afraid, and you realize that with your claws out and thumbs inoperable, you must look vaguely like you’re clawing at her.

“Sorry!” You stutter, withdrawing your… your wing… quickly. “Didn’t realize that I…” You know what? Not the time. “…Just… just… come on, someone’ll have heard that.”
>>
>(2/2)

Shooing her away from the dumpster as best you can, you make your way up one of the nearby fire escapes, that being your only way out that doesn’t involve a street full of passers-by. Why can’t New York be quiet during Christmas, like everywhere else?

The roofs are nestled close in this part of town, making it relatively easy – what with your freak strength an’ all – to leap between them, Layla burying her face in your jumper and wrapping her arms about your neck. You put a few blocks of distance between yourself and the crime scene, eventually stopping for a breather on the roof to a long apartment building.

Layla prods at the membrane stretching across your ‘arms’. You can feel it. Weird.

Peter's been Spider-Man a little over a year. Something like Spider Island happened, just as something like the Clone Saga happened. He was wearing his glasses for subterfuge reasons.

JJ is a great DOOM impersonator. He can speak in allcaps.

Yes.

Tenuous.

Yes.

SSM Peter would be closest.

You don't so much have a hand as three taloned fingers protruding from the joint of your wings. So you could claw people, but not punch.

Maybe.

He's not emaciated, but he could stand to put on some weight.

>[X] Try to get rid of your wings.

Right. Maybe now isn’t the best time for a house call.

“Can you feel that?” Asks Layla, watching her fingers as they trace their way, slowly and carefully, across the leathery tissue that comprises most of your wings. You nod. It’s quite clear and sharp, actually.

“It’s warmer than it should be.” She notes. “Warmer than it looks.”

Something else you’ve noticed. You can feel the heat pulsing through the thin membrane, almost like that smarting, throbbing sensation that accumulates around an open wound – not pain, or any kind of hurt, exactly, but the feeling of blood pumping hard and fast, and close to the surface. It’s something like that.

God, you hope this doesn’t stick. You shut your eyes and whisper to yourself, of yourself, reminding yourself of your own proper borders, the right feeling of flesh on bone, the right weight. Slowly, you feel your skin contorting and slipping, bones crawling inward, receding. In a matter of minutes, your arms are back to normal.

“Whoa.”

Yes. Whoa is about right.

Glancing across the empty roof, you shiver a little. These clothes weren’t particularly warm when you got them, and now they’re missing their sleeves. Furthermore, the whole incident reminded you that you don’t presently have a hood, or a pair of shades. Or anything really.

“…We’re going dumpster diving.” You state, staring off into the grey wall of clouds that loom over distant Manhattan. Layla screws up her face in disgust, recoiling back.

“What?” She all but sticks her tongue out. “Whyyyyyyy?”

You shrug.

You need clothes, and that’s the end of it.

A little over half an hour later, you’re rooting through a swollen lump of trash behind an Apparel, Layla’s disapproving gaze boring into your back. You guess this side of being a hobo was not the side she signed up for when she decided to ditch on the foster circuit. Still, it’d do her some good to see a proper destitute in his natural habitat – though, as of late, you’ve been neglecting your dumpster diving duties in favour of steady(ish) jobs and thrilling adventures.

In a way this feels strangely comfortable, being all knee-deep in trash and grime. Isn’t that just super pathetic?

“So.” You speak up, mostly to keep Layla occupied. You don’t like the idea of bored Layla. “What’s happened? You besties with Peter now?”

She starts a little, and shakes her head.

“No. Peter’s a”– and she puts extra, extra emphasis on this –“neeeeeerd. He has a nice aunt though. And Gwen is cool.”

Yes. She would think that, wouldn’t she?

Really, you’re just finding it a little bit surreal, her talking about these people as though she knows them. You were gone for a week and the world just kept turning. People kept living. You’ve always been rather painfully aware of your own aching smallness, but in little, manageable ways.

“A-ha!” Paydirt.

Layla perks up.

“Found something?”

You nod back at her, grinning floppily, and hold aloft a dark green hoodie. It’s not exactly your size, but it fits well enough, and it obscures your head.

Shrugging on your loot, you make your way back to the scar.

“I can’t believe you’re wearing that.” States Layla.

You glance down at the olive-green fabric, appraising it through your hobovision. Doesn’t seem too bad to you. Not soggy, minimal stains, few tears. Almost fits, too.

“It’s warm.” You say, a little defensively.

“It stinks.”

“I stink.” Actually, now that you mention it, you don’t smell all that bad. You guess the cocoon wrung all the gunk out of you. Maybe that’s why you feel so drained. “You stink, too.”

Layla stares up at you with eyes like hot coal, and asserts that she smells like roses. You can barely remember the smell of roses, but you’re pretty sure that it’s not anything remotely like old chicken, mold, and dried sweat.

You escort her to within view of the station, before breaking off, telling her that you feel like a walk. She regards you suspiciously, but doesn’t waste time in getting out of the cold.

Around you, the scar yawns open. Thoughts of flight dance through your skull.

>[X] Try to get a run-up.

Removing your brand new (second, or possibly third, hand) hoodie, you rub your arms, jogging a little on the spot. The cold prickles at your skin, reminding you that – if, it turns out, you can indeed fly – you probably shouldn’t be flying too far. Or too high.

Right. How exactly…

You recall your sparring session with Laura, and spend a short while limbering up.

When you feel about ready, you summon the thought of that frantic, terrified instant – the bright lure of the flame and the sickening, abject desire to be elsewhere. Your bones shift and twist in their sockets, and you’re surprised by how quick – and how painless – it is this time. In just seconds, you’re spreading a pair of broad, leathery wings.

Well… you guess you should… run, or something? And then do some flapping?

You break into a jog. After a few seconds you accelerate into a run, and, shortly after, you start beating your wings against the air.

At first, nothing happens, and you feel like a total moron. Then you start to notice your feet seeming to slip effortlessly over the snow, just for seconds at a time. Eventually you realize that it’s less a matter of flapping frantically, and more like… rowing, or something. There has to be a rhythm. You heave your wings in broad arcs, and are rewarded by a sudden, heady feeling of weightlessness, your toes leaving the ground.

You glide a short way – ten, twelve feet? – before you run out of air, stumbling forward as the soles of your feet are reintroduced to the ground. You land in an undignified, flapping heap, your face buried in a mercifully soft mound of snow.

“…Ow.”

Invisible is the best option. But, your forgetting the invisibility fails when JJ panics. The first time he takes off he is most definitely going to panic at least a little.

Once we get better at flight and are comfortable with it we should be able to stay invisible the whole time. But it will probably take some practice.

This upgrade allows him to function in such situations with a muted form of invisibility – rather than being truly imperceptible, his features are blurred and his exact position becomes unclear, as if he’s being seen through mist.

Yes he loses invisibility when wounded, fatigued or drugged. I've always thought about it like this. When JJ is invisible he is thinking:
>stay invisible, stay invisible, stay invisible, stay invisible
Literally the entire time.

Being wounded, fatigued or drugged makes it hard to concentrate. And he starts to forget to stay invisible.

You don't have to flap or make sharp turns while gliding just above the ground. Plus this is a first time power use, there should be a roll.

So, that hurt your pride a little.

Or more than a little.

Or enough, actually, to send you up one of the nearby, skeletonized apartment blocks. On your way up through the skewed mess of crumbling architecture you reasoned that you had the general technique sort of down, but you just… needed more lift, or height, or something. Heavy birds take off from high perches, right? For the updraft, or something? That’s a science thing that you heard once, right? Back when watching TV was a normal thing?

When you finally find yourself teetering on the edge of a blasted out window, however, the brilliant white desolation of the scar stretching out below you like a charcoal drawing, it suddenly occurs to you that you may not have heard that, and… and you are very, very high up.

You swallow, trying not to look straight down. You want to be focusing on the sky. On up, up and away. Not down, down, and splat.

The vertigo clutches your heart like a vice. You feel it tugging you back down the stairs, back to the safety of the sodden earth, back to the ground. You close your eyes and try to ignore it, squeezing it down past your stomach, holding it at bay.

You don’t know how long you were there. But, eventually, you feel yourself push off, and out, and into the stretching, soaring blue.

Well, the thing is that if you put a flight roll in place, what's going to happen when you critfail?
Do you just fall?
That means the quest will end the moment 1 is rolled with wings in action at any reasonable height as JJ plummets to his death.

That's why I think you shouldn't roll for flying outside combat, you should roll for landing.

The wind howls in your ears. You aren’t breathing.

The ground rushes toward you. Sky seems to open up like a seething, drooling maw, blue and grey and slurring from one to the other. Eyes are bulging in their sockets. There’s so much for your senses to take in, all of it surging through you at once – cold biting wind slashing sky turning heart pounding.

You beat your wings. The world lurches and you rear up through the air, gaining height.

You’re flying. You’re –

You swing unexpectedly about, veering off course. The world screams around you and blurs out of thought and sight. You strain to recalibrate, to heave yourself elsewhere, but you’re spinning now, hurtling through the air. Your chest seizes up.

This could kill you.

You flail out desperately with your wings and feel yourself wobble tenuously in the air, still descending but at least not spinning. You see the wall, the windows, the sheer, grey concrete –

You slam into the opposite building, your face blushing red, bones shrieking. You’re about to bounce off when your arm – wing, thing, whatever – snaps out, driven by raw survival, and adheres to the concrete.

You feel gravity in its fullness again. Your face bleeds profusely and warmly, the bones in your arms creaking. For now, you just hang there, breathing in and out.

You glance over your shoulder at the ground below. It’s not too far off.

And, if at first you don’t succeed…

You take a deep breath, ignoring the coppery scent of your own blood and the urgent complaining of your ribs, and push yourself off the concrete. Shifting your weight, you twist about in mid-fall, and spread your wings as wide as possible. Summoning all your strength, you feel the blood burn in your veins, and you sweep your arms down in one great heave.

The air roils beneath you, buffeting your fall. You glide gently downward, the descent entirely opposite to the frantic, scrambling desperation of your previous attempt. For a moment you feel almost as though the wind is an extension of your wingspan, a part of you that stretches invisibly through the world, all-encompassing and all-embracing.

It’s a pretty intoxicating feeling. Almost wipes away the churning fear left by your first attempt.

You touch down, and your wings fall around you like a cloak of flayed lizard. They’re surprisingly warm, despite the chill of the air. Still, you can’t help but shiver a little – wings or no wings, you’re still topless and exposed in the middle of New York’s vicious winter.

You dab at your face, wiping away a little of the blood. Your can feel the cartilage in your nose shifting, returning to its unhurt formation. Your ribs, on the other hand, seem to be taking a little longer. Every little step seems to twist a dagger in your side.

>[X] Rest a while.

Well, you sort of flew, didn’t you?

That’s enough for now. You consider heading home, but the pain lancing across your ribs implores you to reconsider, and reconsider you do. It’s not a long walk back, but you’re not up to it at the moment – you just need a little time to steady your feet a bit, and possibly realign a few cracked ribs.

Shifting your arms back into… arms… you approach the building that broke your fall, entering via one of the great tears that open it along its side. Inside reminds you of your old place, where Layla used to live. Stark, bare walls, etched occasionally with the stretched-out, awkward shadow of a human shape, caught somewhere in the passing of its last superheated moment in existence.

After a while, you sorta got used to those, but seeing them again reminds you of what the scar is, exactly.

You slump down beside one of the apartment doors, trying to find somewhere untouched by the spectres of the departed. Soon enough, you realize that your nose is pretty much fine now, and you start concentrating on your ribs, on the image of their rightful forms, on biology, on matter, on rejuvenation, blood, marrow, cartilage, breath, life…

Your nose twitches, and you feel your lungs seize up in your chest.

There’s someone behind you.

JJ has pretty decent offense as it is and some anons are trying to sell it like its the cure for cancer.

Its not bad and I'd vote for it, but its low on my priorities list. rather increasing wings or start building towards druid. Healing 3 can only do so much by itself.
>>
>>31129334

I like Geointuitive Vision, but I'd rather get Shadow Field first.

And I'd rather we hold Druid stuff off until we get our current abilities up to snuff.

I think we all agree that we need to get our existing powers to level two. The only question is in what order we need to do it.

I'd go flight first, but that's just me.
>>
>>31129577
wings 2 gives the biggest immediate benefit iirc, no more jumping off buildings!

Here's my list in order.

Flight
>take off from the ground

Claws
>Not because of offense like you might think. If we get locked in a room or the subway tunnel collapses I want to be able to dig through solid rock. Claws lvl 2 will let us do that.

Shadow field = Armor
>equally useful in my opinion.
>>
>>31129577
I think we'd rather get some higher level ability instead of steadily raising all the powers at same time.
>>
>>31129698
I don't think Shadow field is that good honestly.
>>
>>31129698

I'd rather Adhesive Touch or Shadow Field or Geointuitive Vision first.
>>
>>31129676
Yup, just came back home. Something wrong with it?
>>
>>31129698
flight is the only one I'd back
>>
>>31129712
You do realize that the most X-points we've ever had at any given time is 3.

Banking when we already have one or two X-points is one thing. But, we are never going to be able to bank more than 3 x-points while some of our powers are still at level 1. The temptation is too great.
>>
I'd go for Geointuitive vision first, because it synergizes so well.

Flying? Check
Subtle ranged attacks? Check
Possibility to dodge bullets? Check
Out of combat utility? Check
>>
>>31129846

I'll second that.

Eh, not really.
You see, when given the option most people in this thread would rather have 2 new powers rather than upgrade 1 existing slightly.

However, when it comes to upgrading one or the other, I'd assume people would pick the more powerful option.
>>
>>31129864
Roll to see if you explode
Roll to see how hard
>>
>>31129846
It takes 3 points. I honestly don't think you will be able to convince anyone to bank the next one.

If by some miracle we do bank on the next thread we will probably get Geointuitive vision because it is the most useful 3 point power. But it's still probably not going to happen.

These are the only powers we can upgrade that aren't level 1 right now. You're saying we're going to upgrade one of these before upgrading one of our level one powers?
