>A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away

“We’ll be arriving in the Home One hangar bay in five minutes, Flight Lieutenant.” The ensign says, fidgeting with his datapad as he addresses you. “It appears General Antilles wants to see you as soon as you arrive.”

“Thankyou, Ensign” You say, brushing a tiny speck of dust from your dress uniform as you do so. Your embossed name badge flashes your name and rank within Rebel Alliance Starfighter Command.

>You are Flt Lt. Jace Narra.

You are snapped back from your daydreaming by the ever eager Ensign as he asks you another question.

As he does so, you can see the shuttle you are travelling in begin to be swallowed by the gaping maw of the hangar bay of the Alliance’s Flagship; Home One.

“If you don’t mind me asking, sir, how did you get the position of C.O of one of the new squadrons?” The Ensign asks.

They haven't really started putting political in the pilot's seat yet- it's still "whoever we can drag up and isn't absolutely vital alive" rather than "my guy being in Rogue Squadron makes us look good"- remember being a known Rebel is a death sentence at this stage. We're not taking Bacta War or Thrawn trilogy, we're classic "it is a dark time for the galaxy. Rebel starships haven't gotten their secret fortress yet and definitely haven't won their first victory."

>Defection Appointment

You close your eyes and rub your thumb over your dogtags, painful memories flooding back.

“I was at the Sacking of Ethora.” You say painfully “I flew escort for a bomber wing that was sent in to raze a suspected rebel stronghold on the orders of some Grand Moff. My squadron were known throughout the sector as good pilots, and our C.O was a pure Ace”

>INTEL UNLOCKED: HOWLER SQUADRON (TIE FIGHTER SQUADRON)
>RALTHARAN ASTO (ACE) COMMANDING

“And?” The ensign asks, looking at you worriedly.

“We prepped just like always, went in low and hard and the Bombers – Onyx Wing, they were called, dropped their payload.” You cringe “I could hear screams over my eyeballs engines. That in itself should have been enough to tip me off then and there.”

>INTEL UNLOCKED: ONYX WING (TIE BOMBER SQUADRON)

“What happened?” The ensign asks, suddenly very concerned and curious.

“The Moff, Lowe I think his name was, wasn’t after Rebels. He wanted a perfect society he could show off to his emperor, free of any form of flotsam and jetsam.” You sigh “He ordered a massive bombing raid on a refugee camp.”

>INTEL UNLOCKED: SECTOR COMMANDER
>MOFF LOWE

“I went back to base and made every effort to try and escape.” You say “After six months, I happened to drift aboard an alliance cruiser, and they took me in under asylum. Then, after extensive debriefing and interrogation work, the Alliance accepted me and here we are.”

The ramp lowers on the shuttle and your feet touch the cold metallic hangar of Home One. Mechanics of various species buzz back and forth, literally in some cases, between different ships – mostly fighters and bombers. You would love to stay and chat but you’ve got a-

“They all?” You ask, raising an eyebrow “I thought I was just meeting with General Antilles.”

“No sir. General Salm, Admiral Ackbar and the three other new Squadron Commanders are also present.” The Ensign says “After you.”

>Head to the Meeting

“I’m former imperial, ensign. We don’t keep the brass waiting.” You say, walking in front of her. You overhear a softly mumbled ‘damn straight’ as her hands inch closer to her belt.

Great. They still don’t trust you. And this must be your security detail.

Your walk to the briefing room is uneventful and silent, to say the least. The ensign assigned to your security detail keeps casting side long glances at you, but you ignore them on the entire trip up.

50 Meters away from the Briefing room you can hear arguing.

20 meters away you can hear its arguing between Salm and Antilles

10 Meters away you can hear what they’re saying – it’s about some form of prank Antilles “Wraith” Squadron has played on Salm’s beloved Guardian Bomber Squadron.

Your security detail leaves you at the door of the briefing room as you make your way inside, and you notice 6 other beings in the room. Three of whom you identify immediately.

The dour and slightly portly General Horton Salm, of Alliance Bomber Command.

The enigmatic and boyish looking Wedge Antilles of Alliance Starfighter Command

And Admiral Gial Ackbar, Supreme Commander of Alliance Forces.

There’s also a Devaronian and two humans sitting in the stands that you’ve even seen before, much less heard about.
“Now that we are all hear.” Ackbar says, wheezing between breaths “We can begin to brief you on the current situation and why you have all been called in.”

Antilles takes the floor, pointing to a hologram of the galaxy. “With the Empire on the back foot, Alliance Command and the Senate think that it’s high time we made a push to attack them before they can regroup behind a figurehead and strike again. The senate in particular is worried about the Empire regrouping around a warlord much like what almost happened with Thrawn.”

[1/2]
>>
[2/2]

There is a chorus of nods. You never met Thrawn personally, but from all intents and purpose the guy was a mad genius. No wonder him and the Emperor got along so well.

“Unfortunately we have a number of our fighter and bomber squadrons tied up with either diplomatic duty or protecting the coreworlds that we have fought so very hard to gain and maintain these last few years.”

“That’s where you come in. We have a squadron of X-Wings, Y-Wings, A-Wing and B-Wings each which we need to fill out with extra pilots. Your job is to take one of these squadrons and train the pilots, doing as much to help the war effort as you possibly can.”

“X-Wings will be reporting to me personally. Y-Wings will be reporting to Bomber Command under General Salm, and the A-Wing and B-Wing groups will be reporting to Admiral Ackbar under the title of Heavy Assault Group 4.”

Wedge fixes you with a glance, putting you on the spot.

“So which will it be, Lieutenant Narra. Which craft are you going to use against you former bosses?”

>>
>>31125702

You will be able to customize every fighter in the squadron providing you have operational funds. This is more a prologue of getting the squadron together.

>A-Wing

‘Well I’m used to speed, so I’ll take the A-Wings.” You say. Immediately a requisition order for 1 A-Wings appears on your datapad, accompanied by a list of 4 names. They must be your new rookie pilots that you have to get battle ready. Fun.

You look around the room and see what everyone else picked. One of the other humans, a woman by the name of Tam Sinan, picked the Y-Wings; an act that gets a small nod from Colonel Salm. The Devaronian Kell Saal elects the X-Wing, going straight to Commander Antilles , leaving the last commander, a human by the name of Enric Jansen, to take the B-Wings.

“One more thing.” Commander Antilles says. It appears we have a number of pilots who are outside of their normal squadrons due to various reasons. We feel as though there are a number of reasons these pilots could benefit each of you and as such we are allowing you to assign one each to your squadrons. Please pick wisely and carefully as these decisions will be final.

You notice the two names of Lyon and Kyle both get snapped up right away to different squadrons. You’re not sure who took them, but they’re getting good pilots.

You look back at Torin Marr and his combat service record. It looked as if he flew a number of escort missions for freighters for the Alliance with his squadrons. The squadrons had an 85% retention rate, which is quite impressive, but he seems to have got none of those kills himself having a grand total of three kills over eight missions. Hmmmmm

Jyjhn, on the other hand, is almost a blank slate. You can see she was a serving member of a squadron on Bastion, and her test scores at the Academy were fairly high, but everything else is locked up by Alliance Intel. You could go and ask Colonel Cracken, but that’d be time consuming and risky.

You decide to roll the dice. Whichever one you’ll be happy with.

“Ha! Poetic I see, Leiutenant Narra-“

“I’d also like a squadron patch.” You say, trying to interject. Antilles shuts you down almost immediately.

“You can discuss that with your crew chief. “ Antilles says stepping in, his tone and stance now neutral again before addressing the room at large

“You will find a complete list of personnel files and other lists on your datapads. Each of you will also be given a Protocol Droid to assist you with your day-to-day running of your squadrons. All of these, barring your crew chiefs, will be found in down time enjoying their last bit of relaxation before we fly out for Rebasing tomorrow.”

“Polearm, you will be flying with me to Noquivzor to begin training with Defender Wing.” Salm says finally.

“Sunburst. Please report to Dathomir where we will begin manuevers and training” Antilles follows.

“Spite and Longbow, we’re rebasing to Imdaar IV for the time being. Make sure everything is in order before you head out.” Ackbar concludes.

Hmmmm, no use having a pilot you know absolutely nothing about. Least of all perhaps the only competent pilot besides yourself. You decide to see whether you can get clearance to her files through what channels you have that are available to you. You have there choices:

Colonel Airen Cracken is the current head of Alliance intel, and oversees everything to do with imperial defectors and potential double agents. Hell, he even personally oversaw your defection to the Alliance and successfully debriefed you. He is on Home One at current, so he’d be a simple com click away.

Alternatively, you could ask your new and current C.O – Admiral Ackbar. Ackbar has some pull with Cracken, as well as being able to hand out clearances thanks to being Commander-in-Chief of Alliance forces.

If all else fails, you may be able to head down to down time and try and ask her yourself. It’s risky, but it could prove more of a venture than the other two.

“I cannot give you the clearance” Ackbar says “but I can give you some information on her: She has served the Alliance faithfully for the last year and divulged as much information as she can on military matters.”
“Jyjhn was a member of the 581st Imperial Fighter Wing – Interceptor Pilots, the lot of them. And good ones. They would often be used to attack Bombers and were great at attacking Y-Wings. She even tried a new maneuver where she’d swoop down in the blind spot of a Y-Wing’s turret and shoot out the Nacelles from above.”
“She’s a good pilot with a good combat record before she came here. The Alliance hasn’t put her in one of our craft until now, where we thought we’d throw it open and see whether a commander could give her a try. Hopefully she proves us right.”

“No, but that’ll have to do.” You say, almost without thinking. “I can understand why you wouldn’t want anything else leaked, and I can also understand why having two ex-imperials on a squadron could be cause for concern.”

“As long as you don’t disappoint me with your flying I am sure I can cover any red flags.” Ackbar replies, before pausing a little bit for a wheezed intake of breath “If you’re more curious, you could always try Colonel Cracken. However, I doubt he is likely to release her combat records to you, even for someone like yourself.”

“Thankyou Admiral.”

“That will be all, Lieutenant.” Ackbar says as the line goes dead.

Well, you learnt a little, but not nearly enough. Maybe you should take Ackbars advice and go and see Cracken, maybe even go and see Down Time and meet your pilots. Or, as much as you shudder to think about it, go and meet your support staff.

>Support Staff

You decide to head down to the hangar and check on and meet your support staff. Personnel issues can wait, you think to yourself. For now you can go and have a look at your A-Wings and the support staff that are taking care of them.

Suspiciously, there is no security detail as you make your way to the hangar bay. Strange. You would have thought that with the ensign following you around when you arrived you would have her following you around again. Maybe something came up.

In the hangar bay, you come across your allocated 12 A-Wings sitting on their landers off to one side. The small, sleek craft look tiny in comparison to the other craft scattered around the hangar, but you admire its power and the massive engines located on the back of it.

As you make your way through the maze of small craft, you overhear some overexcited chattering and the cries of a protocol droid trying to keep everything together. A group of human technicians keep trying to run between craft getting them ready, but don’t seem to be doing a great job of it.

“Shien’s saying she needs this done before the new C.O turns up! He could be here any minute! Oh dear, this is why I don’t like working with mix species tech crews.”

That last remark is met by another bout of chattering, this time more angrily than before as you poke your head around the corner.

“Don’t say it to me, say it to the Head of Engineering who left you with a group of humans who don’t speak a word of Sullustan.”

You poke your head around the corner to notice a Female Sullustan arguing with a shiny chrome protocol droid. It would almost be comical if you didn’t think otherwise – the Sullustan barely coming up to the shoulder of the protocol droid.

They both freeze as soon as they see you. Well, looks like you’ll have to do the honours.

“Um, I came looking for my support staff. I’m Lieutenant Narra, of the newly minted Spite Squadron.”

I am fluent in over 3 million glactic and intergalactic strategies and protocols ranging from Clone Wars era contingency orders to the latest protocols and disciplines the Empire is issuing to their pilots thanks to Bothan Splicers.” He says the last bit almost too cheerfully….

Oh right, protocol droid…..

The Sullustan must see your eye roll and sigh, as she begins chuckling earnestly. Ocho does a small double-take. “Oh dearie me, where are my manners? This is Shien Sun. Formerly one of the chief engineers at SoroSuub. She’s your crew chief and is here to assist you in any way possible with the maintenance and possible upgrading of your fighter craft.”

See if we can't boost shields a bit.

Paint scheme.

I vote for Italian Camo scheme for Mediterranean operations in WWII

Pic very related
>>
>>31130018
Good upgrades, I'd lean more towards a simple paint scheme. Probably the usual dark orange color you see on republic/alliance equipment with white reflective paint and black outlines for numbers and squad insignia.
>>
>>31130018

Expanding on this:

1) Make sure our guns have at the very least 45 degree firing arcs. Preferably the full 360.

2) Do the paint scheme as >>31130018 or in the North African camo.

3) See if we can't possibly squeeze a bit more speed out of the A-Wings

4) See if we can't boost shield strength without sacrificing speed.
>>

Also, the next question I have to ask is what our opinion on Imperial Pilots might be.

Sure, they're the opponents, but a lot of these guys are just grunts working for the other side. We used to fly in those eyeballs and know how much of a coffin they are.

It seems... improper to just be all blatantly shooting them down gleefully.
>>
>>31130143
I told you! We're Fel clones! I told you!
>>
>>31130070
A-Wings come with a standard 60 degree firing arc. However unlike other fighters they can't use an integrated astromech droid to help the pilot handle weapons systems so we need to either drill our pilots REALLY hard or we need to work on getting a modified droid/cockpit interface that can handle the usual functions of an astromech droid.

also we should work on making things like disposable proton torpedo launchers or a disposable mine layer so we can drop stuff like siesmic charges along with the usual functions.

>>31130122
I'd prefer jetblack with bloodstripes to camo. MAXIMUM SPITE. I really want that squadron insignia to stand out.

We have a job to do, so we do it.

Certain squadrons will have certain reputations.

If we run into a squadron that is known to be ruthless, xenophobic, and cruel....I see no problem in joyfully vaping them.

If we run into a squadron that is known for doing their duty, but not going after EVed pilots, downed pilots, helpless ships, strafing civilians, etc....then we do our duty, but we do it honorably.

>Helping out Shien

“So what’s a chief engineer doing here in the Alliance?” You ask, eyebrow raised. Shien looks sheepishly away and then mutters something in her alien tongue.

“Shien says the exact same reason we’re all here – to stop the empire.” Ocho translates.
“Yeah but you would have been on a fair amount at SoroSuub” Again, a bunch of chattering and muttering.

“Not really, considering Sorosuub was having all its contracts go to Seinar, Kuat and Incom” Ocho translates again. “Besides, Shien likes working on A-Wings. She finds them quick and nimble, but also a real challenge.

Shien laughs audibly at that. A joyous sound.
“Alright, well is there anything I can do to help?” You ask, preparing yourself to roll up your sleeves. Shien talks again, and this time Ocho turns her way.

“Are you sure? I mean, he’s offering….”

“Am I sure of what?” You say, confused.

“Shien says thankyou, but no thanks. She’d rather you didn’t crash them, is all. She takes great pride in each and every one of her ships.”

“But what about-“

“Shien says the incident you overheard was due to a number of apprentice engineers and mechanics. She assures you they’ll all get used to the routine in time.”

“Huh. Okay.” You shrug.

“She also wishes she wasn’t stuck with some rickety bucket of bolts translat- HEY!” Ocho cries as Shien begins laughing audibly – a sound somewhat behind a full on belly laugh and a chuckle.

[1/2]
>>
[2/2]

“Okay….” You say “Now, you mentioned upgrades?”

“Yes, Shien can do basically anything for these A-Wings provided you have the operating capital or the parts to do it.”

“So…shielding? Engines? The works?” Shien nods at each of these.

“Shien says we obviously can’t do any upgrades tonight, what with the rebasing and everything, but once we land wherever we’re landing, then we can get to work almost straight away.”

Shien pats you on the shoulder and marches off muttering something.

“Shien says she still has work to do before you head out. Something about Spite 6’s shield power converter not stabilizing at high speeds. Yes, I could imagine that’d be a problem on an A-Wing.” The droid pauses and then begins shuffling after the tiny Sullustan “Hang on, wait for me!”

Which leaves you, by yourself for now. What are you going to do with yourself

Also, on the subject of our lightfoil. I'm thinking it'd be similar to the "short" model of lightsabers meant for use in the off hand, at least in terms of handle length. Blade length would be about 2 to 3 feet and the hande itself would be simple black steel with inlaid silver runes. (considering the background of lightfoils these are probably sith runes.) Hand is protected by a collapsable metal disc that extends when the blade is activated. It's a family heirloom with a lot of history, but still nothing more than a decent weapon meant to be a fashionable knockoff of lightsabers.

Downtime doesn’t seem to be hustling at all at this time, with many of the patrons already gone home. That being said, there’s a couple people you recognize: Jyjhn Calhuu look lonely standing by the bar, nursing a Corellian Ale in one hand, while Koskit the Bothan is in the corner idly surveying everyone.

You decide to turn in anyway, and pull up your datapad to find your billets....

To your pleasent surprise, it appears that since Home One was formerly a pleasure yacht, they've kept a lot of those rooms going when dealing with a number of the officers and their billets. Not bad for what you want to do.

Slowly trudging to your room, you pass the hangar bay where the mechanics are still fidgeting and tinkering with the various crafts all around, as well as the SpecForces troops who are a constant 24 hour rotation. God, you pity them right now - they'd have to be more tired than you are.

You trudge your way into the officers hall and flick your ID through the sensor, opening the door to your room. It's not spacious, but it suits the purpose that you need - and that's sleep.

And sleep you do...

In fact, you're pretty much asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow.

Soon, you'll begin training these cadets and rebels how to fight the emperor at his own game.

Soon, you'll have a fighting force that'll strike fear into the emperor.

Like Howler Squadron had a good reputation before they helped Onyx Squadron bomb a refugee camp, what happened after that?

What's Moff Lowe's reputation, is he ambitious? Will we face his forces in the future? What's the status of A-Wing production? For instance after they went into mass production they were give 360 degree cannon rotation as a matter of course but during limited production runs they only had 60 degrees of rotation.

>Howler Squadron

They had a decent rep amongst the Empire, but they weren't anywhere near 181st levels, if that helps.

Before they helped Onyx Wing, they were seen as one of Lowe's best combat squadrons. However, you'll soon find out that that doesn't matter for squat, for a variety of reasons.

After the battle, they've had a reputation for being damn good pilots but they're also not completely clean in regards to civilian deaths.

Lowe's reputation amongst the Empire is as a sadist and a perfectionist. He saw the Empire's New Order and inherent racism as something to aspire towards.

>A-Wing production

We're on the eve of Mk 2 production. At the moment assume 60 degree for your craft. But you can modify to 360
>>
>>31132058
cool, how extreme can we get with modification. I recall in some of the trilogies in the EU there were weird bots. Like one cargo loader droid had been explicitly redesigned to carry a secondary droid that was basically a self aware slicing computer in a compartment in it's belly. Could we give our A-Wings an extra edge by having a similar droid (I.E. a small box slotted into the dashboard of our fighter) made for each craft?
>>
>>31132098

>How Extreme?

I'll do a pastebin this week some time, but anything can go.

Now, that's not to say that you don't need to use some precautionary thought. An Engine Upgrade on an A-Wing might give little improvement compared to say, a shield upgrade or similiar.

A-Wings on droids? Let me think about it. I like that sort of thinking, but it could get a little weird. Might interfere with some electrical bits of the ship you'll want to keep.

Rest assured I'll have a SHOP pastebin at some point during the week.
>>

Canonically A-Wings are too small to take standard astromech droids but what I'm thinking is basically a self aware targeting computer that assumes many of the functions of the craft's original computers and such. On the one hand targeting and weapons operation gets easier, on the other hand if your droid gets fucked up you've probably lost the autopilot, and your control mechanisms.

Improved Ion Resistance so that we can have a better chance of shrugging off ion cannons or have an easier time restarting when we get shocked.

Exactly. Take everything into account with each upgrade. And I mean everything.

I was actually thinking that might be a good way to do it. Get the brain of the droid and implant it into a craft.

Leave it with me.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

next up I'm thinking some "Pop and Drop" weapons. A-Wings come standard with two Concussion missile launchers placed in the nose, they can fire 6 missiles each. Which is cool and all but more dakka is never a bad thing. We could set up some hard points on the belly of the craft, add tubes that fire proton torpedos or similar ordnance or mines (like slave one's seismic charges) for various situations. Maybe even a battle droid or something. Point is taking weapons that normally have dedicated mounts and using fire and forget versions. Stuff like that might cause some issues with control and make the notoriously hard to control A-Wings even more dangerous to the pilot (fire your proton torpedos mid turn and the weight of the disposable tubes dropping causes your craft to go into a spin making you an easy target for instance) not to mention the cost of getting the ammo and the issues that may arise in creating a new hardpoint on each of the craft.

I see what you did there

Increases weight which decreases speed.

Also makes the A-Wing even worse in atmospheric conditions.

Hardpoints are NOT a good idea.

We're interceptors, NOT strike craft. We leave that to the B-Wings we're working with.

We keep with the concussion missiles, possibly looking into a missile with a heavier punch if the situation requires it.

But we're here to hit enemy fighters and bombers, NOT enemy frigates or capital ships.

We are NOT Pash Cracken, we are NOT going to be taking on Star Destroyers and winning. Our Plot Armor is not that thick.
