You are Shax Bonemurder, Raid Leader! You are arriving back at camp after another by the numbers raid! You squashed some hero who even KNOWS who it was, and you've managed to get another side quest completed and also a new one on your log. This poor log ain't never getting clean, is it? Sometimes you feel like you oughta tidy it up, perhaps by assigning potential "suggested levels" to these side quests and then cross referencing your own "level" to see which ones are heinously out of date, but that would require some self evaluation which, frankly, you don't have enough confidence to do without seriously damaging your own psyche!

Anyway, you're not back at camp yet! But you're heading that way. Something tells you, like some sort of god in your machine brain, that if you get back to camp you won't be able to explore this area for a while. Isn't that crazy?! Must be some kind of instinct you've developed from your weeks on the road.

Is there anything you'd like to do?

You flip through the old journal and see something about kuo-toa who you vaguely remember are the fish people race Whoop belongs to.

You wave at him and call him over, "Hey, Whoop, you know anything about kuo-toan raids out to the east of here?" You hope he knows where here and also east is because you sure as heck don't. "Apparently there has been a bunch of activity out that a ways."

"This one advises you to ignore all that activity if at all possible." Whoop's response is more curt than usual.

"Um, why? I mean, I figured if they were fish folks like you we could get along. After all, you and your guys hang out with me all the time for some reason!"

"We're... outcasts. Ollinpolboop. This one received a loobilsinkat directly from Dagilintogon, and this holy vision led me from my ignorant brethern. Those who raid from Sloodilponmolp are radical extremists, claiming they have found the mortal blade of the Sea Mother, which, frankly, is impossible."

Okay you're pretty sure some of those things he said were words, and you're pretty sure you know the meaning of a few of them. "So why is it so impossible to have found a mortal blade of your mom?"

"Because, Honored One, that title belongs to you."

"Neat, I guess? I like my title of Raid Leader more, though, so you can keep. Thank you, though!" It is rude to refuse gifts, but you're not sure what to do with it and it isn't like you can trade it for a meal later or something.

"You can not refuse it just as you have no chosen it, Honored One. Still, it would be inadvisable to seek to interact with those from Sloodilponmolp. They would recognize the Mother's Favour around you instantly and fear and loathe you for it."

Well, what do you wanna do?

Well, if they don't like you it is better to deal with them now rather than later, right? "Haha, what's that could happen, Whoop? Let's go pay them a visit! Why don't you tell me more about this 'mortal blade' business on the way?"

The trip is a pretty long one, but it essentially works like this: Each god is a notorious schemer, whose plans are way too complicated for anyone to understand, and they each have three mortals on this plane that they work directly through to some extent. The Hand is directly aware of their patron's influence, and actively seek to complete those goals. The Blade is usually unaware of this influence, and hold favor as long as they contribute to that deity's goals in some way. Often, they don't know how or why. And the Crown is typically the high priest of the deity, and most directly channels that god's power on this plane.

You don't get it much, but mortal blade sounds like a very ambiguous title! "Hey, Whoop, if you don't know you're getting buffed up, um, are you really getting powers? Cause, I mean, you'd probably notice that pretty quick, right?"

"The Mother's influence is subtle, an ebbing of tides that erodes away your opponents."

"So, basically, not anything like what I do."

"This one is willing to admit that, yes, but even if you're chosen as her mortal blade, Honored One, you won't feel a true surge in power till you establish a firmer connection with that god."

"I ain't about to worship any sorta mom, sorry."

"That is fine."

Well, you sorta get it. The more you work towards her goals the stronger you'll get, you guess? That's neat to know. Too bad you got no clue what those are.

The plains on the way have been surprisingly dead. You wonder what the heck is going on? You've gone through a few destroyed villages. You think you see one ahead that has people in it, though.

You approach the bombed out ruins of this village calmly. It looks like there are still people in it. As you get closer they all assume defensive positions. You wonder why they were so lazy about it, surely they had seen you coming?

"Stop there, goblin! We have no valuables left to steal, and the food we have is good for nothing more than animals. You'll find no sport here. Just leave." This is just sorta depressing!

"Hey, how's it goin'! I'm not here to raid you, even though I'm a raid leader! What's up? You being attacked by fish guys or something?" There isn't a response. Guess they don't wanna talk. You start to just walk into the village. The boys are a bit hesitant, but they follow you in. What greets you is a ragtag group of starving refugees. Why they are still sticking around is anyone's guess. Everyone seems absolutely terrified of you. It mostly looks like women and children, too.

"So, uh, where are all the soldiers or whoever, boss? These folks wouldn't even be worth a good scrap."

"The answer, goblin, is that the men are all dead, the women are all taken, and what remains of four villages is before you in one last effort of resistence. The damn fish men have rolled over us like a dark tide." You're sure Whoop likes that turn of phrase! "Honestly, we can't afford to fight you off. If you're here to kill us then so be it, at least we won't end up like the rest."

Sitri clears her throat, "You may have noticed that we aren't starting anything with you, so drop the whole martyr act. How long have these attacks been going on, how large of a force are we talking here, and is there any sort of unusual figure among these attackers?" Wow, she knows how to get to business.

After a few moments, the spokesman speaks, "About two months, there are probably hundreds of them, and there is a particularly large fish man wielding an oversized anchor. The thing must have been part of some sort of massive warship."

An oversized anchor? Really? That is a bit silly! Still, you got some nice info. "Thanks! Say, we're gonna head out there and take care of these people for you, alright? So don't be so glum! See ya later!" You wave cheerfully as you ride out of the town on your basilisk.

'did some goblins, an orc, a satyr, a kuo-toa, a gnoll, and two deep dwarves just volunteer to help us?' 'I can only assume hallucinations have set in from lack of nutrition'

>You've earned good karma! You Binary Morality Guage has shifted to light blue! You feel like if you had an aura it would be more like water than lava! But all of this doesn't matter!

"Alright, so, how do we track these guys down?" Gneb brings up what everyone was wondering, "There are a bunch of them, so I'm sure we could find some forward bases if we looked for one, but there isn't a guarantee this anchor dude is gonna be in it."

Sitri crosses her arms and taps her foot, "And that is if we want to fight him in his base. We could draw him out to a battleground we've got prepared beforehand if we want an advantage."

"That's if we want to fight in the first place," Bearbreath clears his throat when everyone turns to look at him, "We haven't talked to them yet. There is nothing to say we can't be friends other than what Whoop brought up. Granted, he'd know better than us, but it wasn't a guarantee."

Whoop shakes his head. "That would be unwise. I assure you that our most honorable raid leader is marked in such a way that would be instantly recognizable by my own race."

Everyone looks unconvinced. Well, Whoop can be a bit weird, but he is rarely wrong. How do you wanna go about this?

Ideally, we'd like to get some allies out of this. We have no beef with these fish guys, even if they may (apparently) have one with us. Let's at least give it an honest shot.

Though if we want to be wicked cunning, we could try to arrange a parlay in a battlefield where we can have an advantage if they do decide to pick a fight.

You really don't want to wage an extended campaign against fish folks out here in the middle of their turf right next to a big fish guy city. "Hey, this guy is probably what is making them attack all these villages, right? I mean, if they didn't have a leader for their crusade there wouldn't be one. So I should just take this dude out!"

"Hey, uh, boss, mind if I ask a question?" Gneb sidles up to you, "Why are you doin' this anyway? There isn't much reason for us to be out here fighting fish guys, right? They're just raiding, and it isn't like you care about bein' this mortal blade or whatever."

You think about it for a moment. After a few minutes, you start talking, "One, I owe it to Whoop. He is out here for me, and some of his friends have died for me. I don't know if I'm a mortal blade or not, but if I can prove it to him I feel like it will make him happier. Two, this raiding isn't really supporting our cause. They're just taking out some poor fishing villages. How much supplies or taxes can the city really get out of this? It doesn't do anything except make recruiting soldiers easier by making these places an example. Three, maybe we can make some allies from those out there. Not everyone can be 100% convinced that dude is the mortal blade, and some of them might join us." Gneb is staring at you. This is the most you've probably said at once, and in a serious tone, too. "And four, I just want to. Is that okay?" You stick out your tongue at him. You're the boss so it had better be okay.

"Alright, alright, I get it, boss!"

Still, to catch a fish, the best way is to set the bait and then wait! You and the boys get to work rebuilding a town pretty far into the fish guy's strike zone. It doesn't take long before it looks something resembling an actual village.

The boys have all been cutting loose and setting traps for DAYS. You don't even know where most of them are. This is probably not a good thing, but you don't let it bother you too much!

Finally the scouts report that they see some fish guys heading your way. It is a party of about seventy guys. That's pretty scary! Some explosions go off in the distance. You guess they hit the minefield. Screams from people who fell into pitfalls and punji stakes can be heard clearly through the thunderous explosions. You even hear the splashing of when some kuo-toans entered the moat that was clearly labeled "No Fish Guys". What a bunch of dopes!

By the time they get to the village proper, there are maybe thirty of them. They kick open doors to a home, only to be met by a bunch of wild dogs that were locked up in there. Bears and wolves come bursting out of basements and attack indiscriminately. Of course, none of your boys were on that side of the village. When a fish person stumbles into an alley, they get jumped by a bunch of goblins. You think they might retreat... except they've probably noticed that the village is surrounded by fire at this point. They're stuck in here! Eventually, about ten or so fish guys stumble into the clearing that is the village. You're sitting below a sign that says "NO TRAP HERE" and is pointing directly downward.

Yawning, you stand up as the fish guys spread out, nervously glancing all around them.

"Hey, you guys! Where is the anchor man at?" They either didn't hear you or didn't care. The occasional explosion and howl can be heard going off in the background. You shrug and kick the ground under you, setting off a small explosion which catches the oil slick through the area on fire. Soon, the center of the town is an inferno! You're sweating from the heat, but at least you aren't burning to death. Like these guys are.
>>
>>31104382
It's just another sign that Shax is not actually a full goblin.
>>
"You think a little fire can stop me, goblin?!" A thunderous blubbering is heard. A absolutely massive fish monster shows up, sweeping a huge anchor to clear the fire away! He looks more frog than fish, and has two massive, bulbous eyes.

There are two stars of calamity! The destiny of those who wield oversized weapons is to always meet each other in deadly combat! Clearly, your fates are connected, and now you must... wait. Anchors aren't weapons. His doesn't count! What kinda bum uses an anchor, anyway?!

He is a lumbering hulk, covered in barnacles, shells, and seaweed wielding a giant anchor. You're sure he still has some friends about, but they're being taken care of by your boys or the traps. It's just you and him! Let's fight!

This sounds like a sufficiently non-goblin plan. See, way I see it is that Shax isn't actually smart in any way, she just constantly asks herself 'What would something that isn't a goblin do?'

It explains perfectly how she's survived so long.

Well, the fire clearly doesn't bother him that much, so there isn't much advantage to hanging out in it. Let's start off aggressive! You start a dash, jump up, and open with a SKY HAMMER! Bringing your blade heavily down on the poor brute who was... standing right there a few seconds ago? A tiny crater is formed from your impact. This guy is light on his feet! You snap your blade in the way to catch the anchor before it smashes into you.

"Hm. Tougher than you look, feeble one." He sounds like a super deep voiced giant Whoop. "And what is this smell..." You spin for a roundhouse chop at him which he barely avoids, and keep the spin up, careening into a building. "You can't be it, can you?! That's impossible!" With a roar he pounces at you again with a bounding charge. You barely manage to defend yourself in time with a thunderous clang.

"Hey, stop yelling at me, it's mean!" Milda said you need to start sticking up for yourself more if you wanted to be taken seriously, so you're trying to be more assertive. She said to let your feelings be heard if someone is talking to you in an unkind way. It's supposed to develop a positive relationship or something. Maybe it's a waste of time for a guy you're gonna kill?

You crash through some more buildings, as you fight each other, trading blow for blow, and accidentally setting off several more traps. Kudos to this guy for keeping up with you! Still, a chance finally appears. You think you've got his timing right, and launch another SKY HAMMER! Unable to dodge away, he holds his anchor up to block. Which you sunder right through. What follows is pretty gross and you have to clean yourself and your sword afterward to feel comfortable holding it again.

Well. He wasn't tough at all, was he? What now?

You just took out the pretender to the Sea Mother's patronage! You're not sure if that proves anything, but you do feel a sudden calmness settle on you. Maybe you'll try this whole prayer thing? Probably a better time than now, seeing as you are surrounded by burning and collapsing buildings. But you go for it anyway! You sit down, crosslegged, and close your eyes. Slowly, you enter a trance as you feel dark, cold waves crash over you.

A deep voice echoes all around you. "Hey, Shax. Whattup? I was wondering when you'd call."

"Uh, Sea Mom, is that you?" You furrow your brow in confusion. It's hard talking with your eyes closed.

"I prefer my actual name:" A series of gurgling noises and bubbly sounds are heard. "So if you could call me that, it'd be neat." Not happening.

"Don't think I can, sorry. I'll just call you Sea Mom. So, uh, why did you choose me as your blade or whatever? I'm not a fish person and also I can't swim but don't tell anyone that because it is embarassing." You may be blushing.

"That is pretty embarassing, I agree. Why would you even tell me that?" The voice seems amused as it echoes around in your mind.

"Aren't you supposed to, like, confess or something when praying?" You're pretty sure that is how that goes.

"I don't really ask for my followers to do that. Mostly its mass sacrifices and weird mating rituals. I'm not really into those, but the priests insist..." You've heard too much from this religion already. "But anyway, I picked you because you are proving to be a powerful force that is shaping this region, and, if possible, I want some of my people hitched to your wagon, so to speak." Do sea monsters have wagons? How did she learn that phrase?!
>>
Rolled 21

>>31105805
But Chrome is laggy crap and all the other suck

"Oh, neat, so does that mean I get super powers from you, or what?"

"I can give you some super powers, but our link is unstable at best. You aren't a particularly devout follower, Shax. But yes, I'd be more than willing to lend you some strength."

>You've unlocked a new ability tree: Five More Minutes, Mom! This tree uses a special Tide Point counter for it's abilities. Cool!

Well that was eventful. You stand up from your communion and see Whoop staring at you.

"Honored One, it is a pleasure to have served you this far. This one cannot believe you have spoken to the Mother herself. I can see her influence rolling off you like waves." Neat, you guess?

You spend a few days running around the fish people camps. Most have a hard time believing a goblin could be the Sea Mother's chosen blade, so you don't convince many to come along, but still, you net about twenty recruits. Radical! You're more of a kuo-toa raiding party, than a goblin one, now...

The refugees were all gone by the time you get back to their fort. They maybe took the lapse in attacks as an opportunity to run away.

Still, it's time to head home! You gotta get these new guys incorporated into the fledgling company.

>>
>>31106991
Before "My Little Assassin Can't Be This Cute" had a name it was just labeled as new skill tree with some stars on it.

In the old tree, the bordered skills also had stars.
>>
Chief are you still here? Can you clear up this ability tree confusion?
>>
>>31107041
That sounds familiar to what I remember of my rationale when coming to the assumption the bordered skills are new trees.
>>
>>31105958
Let's be honest, we're making our own.
>>
>>31107913
True, doesn't mean that they aren't going to reward the hell outta us.

These fish probably refused the alliance and they'll thank us for taking them out.
>>
>>31107098

I just got back. I hate bumping a thread that's done, but:

The big boxes are new trees. They reduce the exp you get from the original tree they are from, so it is up to you if you wanna rush towards them or not.
>>
>>31110007
I do not like that idea at all.

Getting abilities and unlocking new trees shouldn't reduce the amount that you get from original trees, if you do then why not just make it the same tree just bigger?
>>
>>31110434
I can see separating off the trees just as far as organization goes; the trees are pretty extensively filled-out as-is, no sense making them even bigger.

However, I agree that dividing up the XP is an inelegant way of doing it. Much better to just have things from an advanced tree bought from the same pool as the parent tree. So basically, functionally just the same tree-but-bigger, but split up for ease of organization/visualization, and possibly for the purposes of big capstone abilities with "you must have X points in this tree" prereqs. All paid for out of the same XP pool, but it's up to us whether we want to spend our fightan' XP on sword saint stuff or baseline combat stuff at any given time, rather than being forced to split it 50/50 (or however the split Chief has in mind would be).
>>
>>31110581
This says exactly what i was thinking.
>>
>>31110434

Hmm, when I said reduce, I shoulda been more specific. If you use Sword Saint stuff you get Sword Saint exp, which means you don't get it from My Sword is Fight. It isn't like Fighting splits up evenly between Sword Saint/Fight. Following the theme of "doing something in the tree increases the exp of that tree".

But if that makes people unhappy I don't mind changing it up in some way. Having an exp pool that splits up as you want would be pretty hard to manage in a quest system, so I don't want to do that if only to save infinite headaches. Of course I could stack the exp on top of each other, but that seems like it'd get to the point where two or three trees level up in one thread which would practically be an additional hour or two added on to whatever my planned time frame was.

Still, I'm glad you guys are having fun discussing the ability tree system since it is basically a giant experiment and mostly just full of jokes. The main problem is the sprawl that occurs from it is a little out of hand, which I'll have to keep in mind in future quests.
>>
>>31110807
so sword saint is an entirely new tree?
let's unlock the shit out of that
>>
>>31110807
It sounds like what you already had in mind is pretty reasonable. Having more numerous trees necessarily reduces the rate of advancement in each tree, on average, because our number of actions doesn't increase. Still, we're likely to experience comparatively rapid advancement in any new tree we get since the exp threshold to each skill point starts low and then increases with each earned.

This is the reason I wouldn't want to stack trees on top of each other linearly, tracking the exp would either be more bookkeeping than necessary or would actually retard our growth.

Independent consideration of skill trees seems like the soundest approach, all things considered.
>>
>>31110807
Why not just use My Sword is Fight EXP for both trees?

It would simplify the hell outta things.
>>
>>31111004
>>31110942
>>31110807
Or just simply it to Sword Exp. And Sword EXP can be used in any Sword Tree, those currently being My Sword Is Fight and Sword Saint.
>>
>>31111025

Sword Sainting is totally different, though!

And we've already established that you should only get exp in a tree by doing things from that tree.

Not to mention if you had exp split up between trees there could be points in time when one Sword Point would be usable on a variety of skills in Sword Saint, Sword is Fight, and Smash n Crash, which could be like a billion different skills.

Keeping separate pools is infinitely simpler in the long run, I think.
>>
>>31111088
I feel like not having to keep track of SS SF and SC EXP would be really complicated especially considering how many skills there will be and new skills may make others obsolete which would divert EXP from a tree giving us no incentive complete trees, and you have to keep track of how many of each move we used in a fight and what tree each one was from, which keeps you from simplifying us killing mooks from "you beat us those mooks" to "you used X attack from X tree on those mooks" And that doesn't even get into passive abilities which are a whole nother beast.
>>
>>31111168
So we could just use S EXP for any tree considering they're all sword based abilities which simplifies how we get it and how it is spent while not making abilities from previous trees obsolete.

You also have to take into account the powergaming of which moves we use if you split up the trees EXP. People will use certain moves when they probably shouldn't just to get EXP in a certain category, moves that may put us in undue danger and may be completely OOC.
>>
>>31111088
Ok
Sounds like it would get pretty complicated on your end, but if you wanna do it like that I have no complaints. It would be very easy for us, the players, after all. Lol.
>>
>>31111465
I would get pretty complicated for us too, trying to manipulate what types of EXP we get.
>>
>>31111524
as if we do that
we just take the actions we wanna take and let chief sort it out
lol
>>
>>31111564
Do you know where we are?

If there's one thing you can count on /tg/ to do, it is powergame in some way.
>>
>>31111600
ok, it'll get complicated for you nerds who aren't following the spirit of the quest
I'll be fine, no differences on my end
>>
The issue I see with just flat Sword exp is it doesn't mesh well with the way we're doing things right now. Currently, the exp needed to earn a 'level' or skill point to be assigned in a tree increases with each earned. If we have 2 or 3 skill trees depending on a single pool of exp we either have to keep track of the exp-to-skillpoint ratios for each tree while still having a universal pool, or experience significant slow-down in our growth. Neither of which appeals to me.

Being able to pick up the first few skills in a new tree fairly quick is satisfying and confers a greater sense of accomplishment and advancement from having unlocked the tree.
>>
>>31111670
He could just up the rate at which we get EXP.
>>
>>31111866
He could do that with either approach.
>>
>>31111889
Ehh, whatever, it's his choice.
>>
>>31111088
A possible way to do it is that Sword Saint adds stuff on top of My Sword is Fight abilities, it means we can still stick with MSiF xp and don't entirely need a new tree.

If you want to differentiate Sword Saint and MSiF abilities maybe have SS stuff cost SS points to activate.
>>
The system he has is pretty good. What's your problem with that?
We get a new ability tree and the current system is kept. If we use Sword Saint Tree we get SS-Exp. If we use another Tree's abilities we get exp for that tree. It is simple and it makes sense and it works nice.
Don't try to fix something that is not broken.
>>
>>31114666
I'm predicting that is will get clogged and broken. Staying proactive.
>>
>>31116419
There is no reason for such a simple system to get clogged. You use something, you get experience in it. Its that simple and straightforward.
You all are just trying to fix something that is not broken and very likely to make worse.
>>
>>31116587
It just obsoletes old abilities. And there's a shit ton of stuff to keep track of. He is gonna have to keep track of how many times we use every single ability in a fight and in drawn out fights that can be difficult. Not to mention when he fluffs out us killing mooks he has to specifically say "you used X attack to do it"

We also won't have any incentive to finish tree's if we unlock new tree's that have better abilities.

Also if we do finish a tree then we're almost guaranteed to not use abilities from that tree anymore simply because using them gains us no exp of any value.

Better to just have one simple S EXP for all Sword related abilites so that we can use it on everything and not have complications.
>>
>>31116653
I think you're wrong.
>>
>>31116697
I don't.
>>
>>31116653
well, if this happens and he doesn't like it he can just change it later

it's an experimental system, this is an experiment

no need to nip such a minor thing in the bud when we don't even know if it'll happen or not, and the fix is as easy as chief going "Hey guys, this system is actually hard to keep track of, so I'm changing it to this other one!"
>>
>>31116653
1) if we don't like abilities in an old tree, we can just tell Chief to lock the ability tree for simplicity's sake. No need to minmax or powergame.

2) We don't know how sword saint works yet, so it's too soon to say whether the xp for sword saint is narratively the same as for MSiF.

3) Chief has a lot of freedom in distributing xp, and he doesn't have to calculate it exactly

4) This is an opportunity for Chief to experiment with more complex systems. It's fine to try xp pool, it's fine to try individual xp, and then see which one works better.
>>

>He is gonna have to keep track of how many times we use every single ability in a fight

Relying on calculations so much and trying to min-max everything. In this quest... Really? Most of my votes for abilities were because i liked the name or concept of it. Also i seriously doubt he calculates ability use to that extent. You are in the wrong quest.
>>
>>31117318
I agree with this guy.
Have you seriously missed Chief saying like half or more of the abilities don't even matter?
>>
>>31117318
>>31117383
I'm trying to ignore a lot of the lolrandumbness. Being silly and having shenanigans is fun, but just being stupid isn't. ie: voting for an ability based on its name
>>
>>31120536
I have to agree. Abilities should do something tangible, even if it isn't necessarily useful.
>>
>>31120551
Wow. that as fast
>>
>>31120558
was
>>
>>31120536
sword saint is both useful and has an awesome name
>>
>>31120674
True, i was just referring to the anon who said he has voted for things based only on it's name.
>>
>>31120536
That changes...exactly nothing. All of the previous points still stand and in short all you are doing is looking for problems that do not exist in an attempt to fix them.
