You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed. When you recovered, you found yourself in an unprecedented world, a backwards world living in fear of the demons you very nearly triumphed against.

Now, you are trying to regain your once mighty strength, by killing and eating the demons that roam the land. It would have been safe for you. The drago were dangerous, but easily dispatched. Even this spore sower and pack of infected wolves would be easy for you to eliminate. But two demi-humans followed you from the village. The boy, Lucian, is hiding against his will in a sealed chamber nearby, but his mother is exposed and has found the ire of the wolves.

You stand near the cooking fire, with the sword of Lucian’s father. The tortoise like fungus is looming over you, paying only a fraction of its attention to the demi-human. The more you idle the more time it has to dredge in reinforcements, you have to act quickly.

>That's up to GRD, and every living creature; human, demi-human, animal, and demon alike, have souls. Just not equal in magnitude.

It didn't exactly specify what soul it wanted, right? And demon souls should be much more potent than normal human ones, right?
>>
>>31100853
He didn't specify no, but it's not like he signed a binding document with you. Verbal agreements mean little.

And a demi-human soul is going to be pretty strong, probably stronger than this demon's
>>
>>31100886
How did we originally bind the demons? Did it go the same way for each demon or a little bit different?
Did we make some kind of contracts or simply forced them?
>>
>>31100927
You forced the binding on them via science, underwent a struggle of ego with them to skim off their personality from the soul juice you were stealing, and entered into agreement with them for services rendered because they're still connected with you and can easily interfere with your capabilities, some of them used to be able to kill you if they wanted to. The science was basically the same for each of them, but the contracts were all different. You don't actually have a contract with GRD though, because his consciousness is only a reflection of your own so you're holding almost all of the cards.
>>
The vote is for hitting the spore sower with a splint, and helping the mother. Please give me a 1d100 while I start rolling.

“Oh, it’s been a lifetime since I’ve seen your kind brave enough to struggle against me. Sure, some of them will brush up against the edge of my woods to harvest the trees, but they all run when they see me and it’s no fun to let the pets kill them. I’m so happy you came here, elf,” the spore sower says as it creeps down the ravine towards the demi-human woman.

“You’re a real pathetic excuse for a demon. You’re not even animating other demons, you’re so low you have to use dogs. Did you know that I would hunt your kind? The big ones out in the waste were impressive. They could bring entire marauder packs under their control. I even say one that had made itself a harem of sirens, that bastard was real keen on trying to get one of my sisters,” you say as you step closer to the fire. “So they sent me in to deal with him. He was squatting too close to a pipeline, couldn’t have that,”

“When I first got there, he was out on the hunt. Rumor had gotten to him that my sis was deployed. It was just me and his sirens, so I cut their heads off and hung their corpses in the trees. When he came back, he was so fraught and confused I just walked up behind him and cleaved him in half. And he was impressive, so what does that make you?” you ask as you grab a burning log. You can tell that the spore sower is fuming. Its claws are gouging through the mud and roots. While it had been swaying back and forth whimsically, it’s now locked in place. “He may have been your pa actually, so I guess that makes you a bastard.”

1/2
>>
The demon screeches and jumps down at you, mouth agape. You skip back and whip the log down its throat. The clumsy creature crashes down atop the cooking fire and gags as you take off after the wolves. The mother had started running almost immediately after seeing the demon, but is surely still nearby. She wouldn’t have just abandoned her child.

As soon as you climb out of the ravine to give chase, three of the wolves that had been after her appear from behind the trees, snarling and twitching. The mother is running a large loop around the ravine, if you don’t waste time with these pups you could catch up to her, but they’d be a problem later.

Alright then, writing.

>Run along the ravine, it may give you the drop on the spore sower

The wolves around you slide through the shadows, snapping their fangs at you and preparing to attack in unison. But you don’t give the pests the time. You fix your grip on the sword and spring at the wolf on your right. The animal jumps back at you as the behest of the spore sower, but the movement only exposes its neck and helps you disacquaint its head from shoulders.

The animal collapses on the ground and its comrades run over the corpse to chase after you as you sprint between the trees. They keep up for a moment, but quickly begin to lag behind. Ahead of you in the darkness you can see the woman running. The wolves are gaining on her, taking turns sprinting to the front to snap at her heels. When she starts going down a small hill, one of them pulls ahead of the others.

You’re still too far away to help when you see her spin around and confront the beast. Her foot flies out and catches the animal in the side of the neck, cracking the bone and knocking it aside. She hesitates long enough to see that the wolf isn’t getting back up and starts running again, but with a new limp.

“This way!” you shout to her as you run up on the wolves. The two remaining wolves skid to a stop to face you as you run their pack brother through with your blade.

“Where is Lucian? What are you doing here?” the woman asks as you let the wolves get on either side of you.

If you answer her questions, the spore sower may learn where the child is from its connection to the wolves. Though something makes you doubt it’s intelligent enough to decipher the message.

“He’s safe, you’re not. Find somewhere to stay out of reach while I deal with this,” you tell her. The other two wolves will be upon you soon. Having four biting hounds on you would be too annoying, so you attack before the pack can reassemble. Rather than stand up to you however, the animal backs away, so you leap upon it and skewer its heart.

“Lucian, Lucian where are you?” the mother shouts as she starts towards the ravine, rather than listen to you.

“He is safe! I will deal with this, just stay away!” you shout at her as you run down the other wolf. When the other two wolves appear, you’re forced to take your attention off of her for a short moment. Just long enough to cut open each of their throats. You stop to catch your breath and wipe the blood off of your body. It’s good to have a sword again, even if it’s already cracking in half. But you need more of your strength.

You grunt in pain as lances of burning pain run down your right forearm. The nerves start to spasm and your muscles lock up. Spores must have gotten into your skin from the wolf blood. They can’t get to your blood stream like this, but they’re still able to interfere. You should be immune to this, but your body is too weak.

When you turn around, the woman is gone. You swear and run after her, back towards the ravine. AS you get closer, you can hear the spore sower punching and clawing at the dirt and metal, it must have found Lucian, but won’t have an easy time getting to him. When you come within sight of the scene you see that the mother is practically on top of the demon, but frozen with fear.

“He’s going after your son!” you shout as you sprint down to the ravine. The thought seems to snap her out of her daze, but also alerts the spore sower. It looks up at her just in time to see her leap atop its fungal back. A cloud of spores plume into the air as she breaks through a fruiting body. You leap through the haze an instant later, trying to spear the blade through its carapace.

But the spore sower shakes and drops down to the bottom of the ravine. You still land on its back, but at a poor angle. With a loud clang, the sword snaps halfway down. The tip goes flying off to the side, barely scratching the creatures shell. You growl and raise the hilt back into the air and drive it down, this time ripping through the shell and squirting its blood across yourself.

When you pull the blade back again, the demon shouts out in pain. Just before you strike it again, something strikes you in the back of the skull, where the bone is still weak. Your muscle coordination momentarily shuts off as you go flying off the side of the demon. You hit the dirt face first and slowly pull your limbs around as your vision resets.

When you turn back to the demon, you see the demi-human jump off the side of it. She’s coughing heavily, and you can see blood on her knuckles despite the poor light. The demon laughs a bit as it backs away from you. Seems he has a new wolf under his control.

You're not super man levels of immortal, if something big enough eats and digests you, you wont come back. If someone manages to restrain you and burn your bones, you wont come back. If someone cuts your head off and leaves it detached for long enough, you probably wont come back. The good news is that's about how far they'll have to go to keep you down. You scowl and spit a bit of blood out of your mouth. When she knocked you off the demon she managed to split your inner lip. Perhaps you should have told her to flee rather than take on the demon. She clearly has no idea how to combat the spore’s influence on her. And her body is strong, she’ll be dangerous of this drags on.

The spores in your arm still burn and itch, but the demon has to entirely focus on her now, so their irritation has lessened considerably. You twist the broken blade back and forth in your hand a bit to gauge the new weight and balance, the broken edge is still rather sharp, might be sharper than the neglected edge actually. Still, you don’t want to do the woman any great harm, even if she is standing between you and the demon.

You get back to your feet as she staggers towards you. She’s still limping on the leg she kicked with, punching you must have broken some bones in her hand. Luckily, the spores aren’t controlling her perfectly. As you walk forward, the spore sower forces her to meet you and attack blindly. The demon has no idea how humans fight one another, rather than using her limbs, she’s practically throwing herself at you.

A quick push sends her light frame aside, and you sprint past. The spore sower reels back on its hind legs to free its front claws. “Why is an elf this powerful? How is this possible?” the demon shouts as you cut off half its hand and stab through the other. It steps back and you take the opening to cut through the tendons in its knee, toppling the beast to the ground. The ground shakes as the fat creature bounces.

You walk over to the head and grab it by the jaw, exposing its soft neck for the broken tip of your blade. “Careful,” it says. You can see the fear in its eyes, but it isn’t pulling away. Glancing over its body, you see that the woman is collapsed under its raised hind leg.

“You pathetic little monster. You should just crawl back to the brood that spawned you and die,” you growl as you press the metal against its neck.

The demon laughs and stares back at you.

“You’ll die either way. Sooner or later.”

“Better later than sooner, elf. Not all of us live forever,” the demon grumbles at you. Its blood has nearly saturated the muck of the ravine, and more is still pouring out. When it talks, it barely has the strength to lift its head from your grip.

You ponder it for a moment, tilting your head to the side and staring into the twisted orange eye of the demon. “Better sooner,” you say before you dig your feet into the ground. you pull up on its jaw with all of your strength and drive the blade into its throat as you flip it over on its back. You feel the distinct crack of its skull as the blade digs into the brain.

When the body spasms, the hind leg kicks out and catches the demi-human. She screams in pain as the thick claw rips open her chest and throws her against the ravine wall. You quickly twist the blade through the brain and run over to her side.

“Mom?” Lucian shouts as he throws open the door.

“Don’t look kid,” you order as you kneel next to her. The itching in your arm is gone, so the demon is likely dead, even if you didn’t feel the dissipation of its soul, so her body is her own again. But the claw ripped through a good portion of her abdomen and shattered her sternum, and a large number of her bones are likely fractured. She’s bleeding heavily and needs treatment. If the treatment is soon, her physique should be strong enough to survive.

Lucian keeps switching his gaze from you to the demon. He’s twisting his foot back and forth in the dirt, wanting to go to his mother’s side but held back by guilt and fear.

“Just hold on a moment. If we’re where I think we are, then I might be able to find something to help you with,” you tell her as you stand back up.

“I’d really prefer it if you simply took my son and brought him to safety. There are too many demons in these woods. Leaving me behind is fine,” she says as you walk towards the door.

“Humans should never abandon each other,” you state. “Kid, did you see anything in that room while you were in there?”

“No, it was too dark,” he says as he pulls his father’s sword out of the spore sower. He falls on his butt when the steel slides free. The surprise on his face from seeing it broken is quickly overcome when he turns and sees his mother. “Mom?” he asks as tears quickly well up in his face.

You leave the two alone to reconcile as you venture into the dark room. With the door open, some amount of light is managing to make it into the chamber. Dirt has accumulated everywhere, and a water pipe is trickling into a puddle in the corner. Roots have pierced through the metal ceiling and hang in the air above you. And there’s a door on the opposite wall.

You quickly stride over to it and try to open it. When you find the lock jammed, you simply kick the door in, releasing a cloud of stale air. Your eyes water from some contaminant, but you continue forward regardless. The darkness is almost too much for you to see, bu then a motion tracker detects you. The lights click on, the once white LEDs now dim and off colored.

The room seems to be just a small hub connecting to the transport rails that should have undermined this entire region. But the emergency shutters are slammed shut, and you can see two corpses in the corner. They died long enough ago to be nearly mummified, trapped for all eternity clawing at their throats and faces. One of them has a gasmask still attached to his face, beneath a helmet marked with a red cross.

There must have been some kind of terrorist attack. But they’re not going anywhere, and the field first aid kit is still attached to the medic. Some kind of airborne assault that killed all of HQ. This could have been what incapacitated you. But if it is, then you have been unconscious for a very, very long time.

When you kneel next to the medic to check his first aid kit, the bones crumble in your hands from sheer age. But these won’t be going anywhere, and Lucian’s mother is still outside, dying. You grab the first aid kit and open it up. All of the organic pieces of the kit are rotting away, but the metal and synthetics are undamaged, if a bit unclean. Better than nothing. When you pick up the kit and start to walk away, you can’t help but feel the eyes of the dead accusing you of something, of not protecting them.

And that's where I have to call it unfortunately. Just a lot of stuff is piling on top of me right now. Sorry, blame the curse for making me too sick to attend class today.

I'll archive soon, next thread might be Sunday night, if not then Tuesday at the usual time.

And guys, capitulating with your demons will give short term benefits in exchange for exacerbating their egos in the long run.

Roughly two meters tall, 100 kg, white male. Black hair with a rough beard. His eyes should be silver, but are likely back to being brown, the pointed twinge of PTSD in his eyes is apparent to most people. Ears, nose, and knuckles are all a bit too large. His face and body are wrinkled and withered to the point that he looks to be in his late fifties, though his muscles are still as hard as steel. With good food and time, he'll go back to the prime of his life. Despite living a life of constant battle, his various contracts have combined to result in a scarless body. And if he invokes his contracts, eight specific tattoos will appear on his chest, most prominently is the pentagram over his heart.

ah okay thats good to know. Not fucking capitulating then.
>>
>>31104183
He is normally supposed to be 200kg right?
>>
>>31104475
Yes, but that number is misleading because he's about twice as dense as water normally. Most of his weight doesn't actually bulk him up beyond typically huge

I'm on my phone btw
>>
>>31104801
What?! No! We must become HUGE!

I can push disbelief, not break it.

And it thematically clashes if he ends uplooking demonic when he supposedly triumphed over the demons
>>
>>31105380
That was meant to be rather tongue in cheek. I would prefer to not actually replicate HUGE quest, regardless of its hilarity.

Confirming that these are me, for posterity.

Also, I can answer questions.
>>
>>31104183
That's current appearance by the way, you were much more tactical back in the day and did indeed have a dragonslayer sword. Except calling it a dragon slayer would have been a bit presumptuous considering things.
>>
so we aren't able to offer the soul of the sower to gdr?
>>
>>31112090
First, it's not the soul he wants, but the body of something with a strong soul. Second, no, not if you want to save the mother.
