It’s early March in Lukewater. Up here that means another two months of winter. That also means the town is full of visitors as they gather and prepare for the celebration of the first arrivals- the more fun half of a local tradition here called the “Forging”.

Every year, at around this time, the old timers round up all the kids old enough and kit them up for a four week hike into the mountains. Everyone heads to this shrine where there’s a magical fire and they have to take a part of it back to town. Once everyone’s back there’s a huge feast and week long festival that actually isn’t that bad.

The reason there are so many out of towners here lately is because attendance in the tradition isn’t exclusive to the locals. That, and the first party to arrive shrine-fire intact is awarded a prize, usually something a local artisan has cooked up. Rumors this year say it’s something enchanted.

This year there are three such groups, and you have the rotten luck of being named one of its captains. You’re sure as hell it wasn’t because of your sense of team spirit, so it was definitely because of your reputation as...

[ ] A Witch.

Well not a witch exactly, you help your Mum run an alchemy shop. If people here knew you actually had this weird soul bond with what is quite possibly a demon they might freak out.
Horror-terrors aside, you’ve taken to the craft pretty well and are proficient with many cureative and otherwise potions.

[ ] An Arcanic’s Apprentice

Your parents eventually decided adopting you was easier than chasing you out of their shop every other day, more for fear of your safety than you walking off with whatever prototype they were working on. While your growing introvertedness over the past few years has worried them somewhat, they are abundantly proud of your progress as an arcanic in your own right.

[ ] A Rapscallion

Your Da’ is a lonely old clockmaker primarily. Though Da’s more like a general repairman for city hall, out on odd jobs more often than he’s home. Needless to say you’ve had a lot of free time to yourself. The life of a delinquent isn’t always a rewarding one, good thing you’re fast enough to outrun the downsides. At least, most of the time you are.

[ ] A Sword Arm in Training

Da’ served in the Great Incursion over thirty years ago. Him and Mum were way old by the time they finally settled down with children. Mum had a real tough time having you and she hasn’t been willing to try for another child since. Even though he’d never say it out loud, Da always wanted a son to carry on his name in the merc circles.

[ ] A Budding Druid

Years ago, hunters from the town found you amongst the remains of an ambushed camp out in the sticks. Your sister nearly got herself killed unknowingly fending off your rescuers. Today you spend most of your time in the nearby forest, either hunting with your sister at your side or just spacing out. The town is alright you guess, although it’s annoying how pretty much everyone here smells like perfume or soot.

Druid it is!!

Your eyes slowly adjust to the dazzling light coming from the town’s main hall, little flecks of ice scatter the light in front of you. Out front you can a freshly dug snow free path to the front of the hall, full of wet foot prints.

Officially, this banquet is to be the first place each captain assembles and gets to know their party. Given the majority of initiates come from here, Lukewater, these teams are already decided upon and the captains will work these out before hand.

You’ve spent the last week just trying to hide from anyone asking about the teams since you found out you were to be a captain. You vaguely know most of the other kids your age here but, well your proud spirit of procrastination has yet again bitten you in the ass.

You stand in front of the hall for a moment, rubbing your sides for any extra bit of warmth you can squeeze out of your jacket.

Been 20 minutes calling it. Those are kinda the same thing anyway! Oh well.

You skulk around to the right of the building looking for a less conspicuous way in. You can see light pouring out the slats of a shuttered window by the general storage section of the town hall. The cold wooden frame groans slightly as you work it through it’s thin layer of ice, finally sliding up with a dry THWACK.

You quickly glance into the room before jumping back down from the sudden noise. The relatively small room, more like an oversized closet, is filled with camping equipment. Backpacks in a neat pile in the middle with jackets lining the wall. A loose torch here, some tent poles there.

You swing one leg over and scootch slightly to hop the other one in, taking the time to kick ice off the soles of your boots. The rapping of heavy leather and rubber on the wall must have kept you from hearing the door open.

After dropping in, sliding the shutter back down and slapping extra snow off your jacket. You turn around to see a tallish boy in the middle of removing a parka, sorta tangled up in his arms with his glasses unseated by the collar. He seems to be about as surprised as you are.

Another five seconds passes (hours?) before there is movement again. The room fills with the sound of the boy’s jacket stressing as he maneuvers to nab one of the arms of his glasses with his teeth. Once he successfully does so he quickly pulls off the tube shaped parka. He’s at least five foot-ten, maybe even six feet tall. His short blonde hair is shaved close to his head and he has a heavy tan from whatever work it is that built him up like a train. The very businesslike shirt underneath his jacket is ironed neatly with sharp creases.

“H-hi, you’re the second team captain right? I’m Nolan.” He stutters while ignoring the smudge he put in his glasses just now. “You’re the hunter who supplies Cork’s tavern right?”

“Yea, that’s me.” You step forward and extend your right hand in greeting “Name’s Fera,” He stares at you and then your arm for a moment. Are you doing this wrong? You slightly extend your arm and rotate your hand a bit more before he realises what you’re failing to do. He shakes you more than he apparently meant to as you both take hold of the other’s forearm.

“Oh uh, sorry, just a bit, jittery, is all.” He quickly withdraws his hand to scratch the clean shaven back of his head. “Uh, so I get that you’re kinda shy but, the window? Really?”

“I, have my reasons!” You sputter as you move past him to the coat rack and start at the fasteners on your jacket.

“Right, sorry, I won’t ask. Just wondering why you’re nervous at all. Don’t you, sorta live in the forest half the time?” He takes a seat on a backpack, then adjusts as something pokes him.

can you explain the stats next to the equipment?
>>
>>31070992
Of course

LAR1 means our Hide Armor counts mechanically as Light Armor with a rating of 1.
Basically this means that any amount of shock damage we take in a single instance is reduced to 1 (this happens no matter the rating of LAR) and 1 point of killing damage we take from an attack is reduced to one shock.

EXAMPLE: We take a spill off long drop and take 4 Killing and 4 Shock damage, the 4 shock is reduced to 1 and 1 of the killing damage is converted to shock, thus we take 3 Killing and 2 Shock damage instead.

The notation by our Longbow and Utility Knife mean that the Longbow does an amount of Killing damage equal to the width (number of matches) in a sucessful attack action, plus 1. Where as the Knife only does Width in killing without any modifiers.

“R-right, sorry, of course.” He stands up from the pile of gear. “Have you decided who you’re picking for your party already? I haven’t heard much from the others.” He stares at the ceiling while cleaning his glasses with a cloth finally. “You know how Iori is, he wouldn’t say a peep about the Forging, and uh, that other girl, the one from Cross company. >30 minutes, calling it

“Who is ‘Cross company’?” You say, fretting with the hem of your tunic.

“All I’ve heard is that it’s some kind of mercenary guild, but I don’t know if she’s actually a card carrying member.”

“Maybe they have jackets.” You finish making sure that your clothes free of any ice waiting to sting you, and that you are otherwise presentable, whatever that means for you. Nolan opens his mouth to say something, the lump in his throat eventually settling back to resting position as he loses his train of thought. “So, what are you supposed to be anyway?” You say, staring.

“Uh-uhm I uh, well I’m a lumberjack mostly. Not much, hunting experience.” He starts rubbing the back of his head again. “Lots of hiking however. No, problem, there.” He trails off, attempting to hold a smile. “Uh, actually I was just about to get some tea here, my uh, my mom bought a freshly brewed jug of some for everyone.” Something is really bothering him.

>Time up!

“Tea’s gotta be better than this, lets go.” You start toward the door, only mildly startled as nolan rushes to open it before you get there.

“Ahem, yes, let’s get back with the others then.” He relaxes his somewhat extreme posture from opening the door and stands up straighter. “Curious, who exactly did you pick for your party? I don’t seem to remember seeing you around all week now that I think of it.”

You step through the door, pausing just as the both of you are at the same distance to the threshold. “Nolan, right?” You ask with a pointing finger.

“Uh, yeah, Nolan Rentoup, m’am-uh! Umm... miss?” His glasses shift up his nose a bit as his eyebrows twist up his forehead.

“Right.” His face is awful red, you hope he isn’t sick, if the cold is getting to him this early he won’t make it very far on the trek.

You two silently walk down a hallway as the sounds of indistinct conversation grows louder. You slow down just before the next door to see if he will do that jumpy-door-openy-thing again. He does, somewhat less jumpy this time. Clearing his throat as he waits for you to exit the hallway.

Weird.
