Well, you figure you’re going to get hit one way or the other and the longer the match goes on the more you’re going to get hit and the less chance you’ll have to hit her. So you do something that’s arguably insane. You move towards the swing.

She isn’t trying to guard herself at all and the swing seems slow, perhaps on purpose or perhaps because she’s entirely too confident you’ll try and stay away from imminent pain. It’s the only chance you’ll have and the only one you need. It’s probably luck, but somehow you manage to swing the summoned sword in a good arc, impacting low on her left side. It probably wouldn’t have hit in a real fight, but you grin as you feel it impact.

Then that grin is knocked away as her swing hits your ribs with a crunch. You remember dying a couple times before, vaguely of course, and quite honestly you think most of those hurt less. You fly through the air, slowing a second before you hit the wall with a thump. Something in your back pops as you hit and the sword goes flying.

With a groan you slide to the ground, thankfully landing on your uninjured side. You manage to open your eyes through the pain holding off unconciousness, just in time to see the crazy gym teacher approaching, a near feral smile on her face. Tossing her cape to the ground she approaches you, arm grasping yours and rolling you to towards your stomach.

Sighing you turn to Tatsuko, with a look of exasperation on your face.

“You wouldn’t happen to know a place where I could shower, do you?”

There’s a moment of thought in her eyes and then she smiles. Normally when she smiles it’s just that, a smile. But this one seemed…smug? Mischievous? Still grinning she grabbed you hand, leading you outside as you snag your bag.

It’s a little while later, you’re now showered and changed, walking with Tatsuko towards your next class. Well, “showered” would be a bit of a misnomer.

What Tatsuko actually did was lead you outside, to the back of the gym. It was an out of the way place, nobody was around and there were no windows looking down on it from above. However what was back there was a hose. You had looked at Tatsuko and she had just smiled. So you had let Tatsuko shower you off with the hose, something she seemed to take great pleasure in doing. You had managed to get around a corner to change, but you had the sneaking suspicion Tatsuko had tried to peek anyway.

Glancing up at your tall friend, you wonder why you would need protecting from her. Seeing you looking, she smiles, following you towards your next and final class of the day, Mysticism 110.
“Don’t you have your own class to go to?” you ask her as you approach the building.

She nods, pulling out a piece of paper from her pocket. It’s rumpled and you can’t read it very well, but she points to her next class. Mysticism 110.

“Aren’t you a junior?” you ask, checking again to make sure you aren’t reading it wrong.

“Ah…yes,” she says, obviously embarrassed by this fact, her face turning red.

“Sorry,” you say, “None of my business I guess.”

“Class is dark…and big…” she says, “Makes me sleepy.”

You hold back a chuckle as the two of you enter the building containing the classroom you need, it wouldn’t be nice to make fun of her for sleeping.

“Maybe I can help then,” you say to her, to which she nods.

Entering the classroom you see what she means. It’s a large stepped room, nearly an auditorium, with low lighting and tables set up so that students must work in pairs. There are a few open tables, so you drag Tatsuko towards one in the middle before she takes a seat in the back. This gets you a few looks and some whispers from people as you walk by.

As you and the remaining few students take a seat, a voice starts speaking. It is female, low, mildly droning and you can’t see where it’s coming from making you wonder who exactly the speaker is.

“Hello and welcome to your introduction into the art of mysticism,” says the voice, “I will be your teacher. Before we start in earnest, I’d like all of you to take a moment and try to use the crystal balls in front of you.”

You look down at the table, a crystal ball in front of you. You would’ve sworn that it was empty a minute ago. Glancing around, you see most of the other students immediately start at the glass spheres. Except Tatsuko, who seems to be falling asleep already.

Giving her a nudge, you look back at your crystal ball. Never did like them much, always thought they were dumb. But it is for a class.

As you poke Tatsuko again, making her at least look at her crystal ball, you try and focus on yours. Try being the key word. Mostly you stare at it, trying to get something out of it. But you let your mind wander while you do, wondering what in the hell you could possibly see through some glass ball.

Then you see something. Focusing your attention on it, you feel yourself being drawn closer, closer as the ball fills your vision and you try to make out what you see.

And then see it.

And it sees you as well. Knows where you are.

All you get is a moment of terror as it reaches for you and then the crystal ball shorts out, cracking and then exploding in your face, just barely stopped by a field that seems to be around the table. Nevertheless the surprise knocks you on your ass, creating a massive racket besides the exploding ball.

All eyes are drawn to you as you land, surprised by the violent reaction.

“Oh my,” says the voice, “It’s been some time since something like this happened. Are you alright?”
