The time has finally come. But it has. Years of hard work, some shrewd schemes, and occasional outright theft have finally paid off. The Petty Waif has arrived from Tsilokar, her hulls burgeoning with slaves, and a portion of their wealth goes to you - your scrounged money was wisely invested in this venture. The final price you'll collect is dependent on the value of the slaves on the market, but it's bound to be plenty. You only put 80 sterlings in, a far cry from the amount paid by the truly wealthy, so you're almost the last to pick your slaves - but not the truly last. A long-bearded goblin holding a ledger calls you up and informs you that you are entitled to any four of the seven remaining slaves. This should be more than enough to pay off your own indent, and put you well on your way towards true wealth.
>>
>Elf
Your eyes are immediately drawn to one of the Sidhe. Most of them were taken first, but it's not hard to see why this one was left- she's clearly deathly ill. Nonetheless, she is a beauty, and would be worth a fair price if nursed back to health. She won't fetch much as she is, and won't be working any time soon. You can't tell what her skill is, but all of the Sidhe have one, and if nothing else she'd be profitable as a sex worker.

>Gnolls
The native inhabitants of Tsilokar. There are two small brown gnolls, the breed that hails from the southern deserts, and a great grey striped she-gnoll with one eye. It's not clear how a gnoll of the Imperial breed wound up on a slaver's vessel, but you can guess a violent crime was probably involved. The browns are likely mere spoils of war.

>Goblins
Two diminutive greenskinned forms peer at you with beady eyes, one male and one female. Their people are looked down on as base and unintelligent, but are also known for being quick with their fingers, vicious in war, and cunning with coin. This one was probably bought from a jail somewhere.

>Human
This ebony-skinned girl has the five marks of the Sun tattooed on her chest, marking her as a priest. She was likely a target of opportunity on a raid. She's strong-armed and could work hard even if her power over the crops isn't needed.

You indicate your choices, and a heavily muscled human, probably a slave himself, rounds up your choices. All of the females, leaving all of the males for the one person who invested less than you. A gruff unwashed dwarf, apparently, he shuffles up to sign for his charges as soon as you sign for yours.

The human overseer turns to you. "Taking them straight to market?"
>Yes, thank you
>write-in

You consider your economic situation; it would take an even 300 sterling to pay off your indent. You might be able to make that selling a single slave, but if you could also keep them all and pay off your indent in the future, with the fruits of their labor.
>>
>>31054961
Yes, but that doesn't automatically mean samefag. I think, however a good way of going about things is to final destination poll our numbers, and see exactly how much of us there are.

I decided which ones I wanted, then noticed two people had already voted that way. I wasn't sure if I should still vote, because my choice was winning and I didn't want to look like a samefag.

I don't really care which goblin we pick, and I thought the gnoll was male when I decided on it.

>>
>>31055022
You could potentially lease them. Theoretically, you could also buy things, but you've only got a few copper drams to your name at the moment.

>>31055024
Fairly low magic. It is very unlikely that a cleric capable of instant healing would be in a slave ship, but as a devotee of the sun, she's probably well suited to treat illness anyway, they're the main medical providers of the human realms.

>>31055037
300 sterling debt, and let's say 58 drams pocket change. 144 (a gross, or a dozen dozen) drams to the sterling.

>>31055080
You have three years of labor left on your contract. Those who aren't indentured are paid twenty drams a day for their labor at the sugar plantation where you're employed, and spend about 15 of it on food. Most spend the rest on rum.

>>31055090
Dark, yes. Wila though; I'll touch more on the PC's background when it comes up in-character.

Small update with pricing coming up, it also might behoove you to talk to your new slaves too. They may be property, but they're also people, they can tell you more about their abilities in-character than you can guess without asking. Feel free to come up with questions and topics as I write.

As you walk, you interrogate your new slaves. "Gnoll, you have a name?" "Kula". She doesn't volunteer a clan, meaning she's probably an outcast. The gnolls don't cast out their own for much, meaning she's likely a kinslayer. Or perhaps she spoke rudely about their empress. "What's your combat experience? Line of work?" She turns her good eye down towards you, furred face inscrutable. "I was killing your kin on the Fofin banks while you were a child. That's my line of work."

You step back a bit, and turn to the goblin. "You?"
"What do you care, slaver? Just going to sell us, right? Sell us all separate so we don't know nobody?" The guard walking with you sees fit to interject: "Best answer, wretch." The goblin starts. "Bessa of Chirugon, and the best seamstress of that port. My man was the best tanner too, not that you'd care." You nod, and look to the elf, who is stumbling along ashen-faced. "And who are you? What are you sick with?" She barely lifts her head, but the human volunteers. "She's got the salt curse. picked it up on the journey. Should shake it eventually. I'm Ilandra, maiden of the Sun."

As you speak, a rotund and bearded merchant appears, jovially looking over your purchases. "New for sale, hm? Ah yes, I could use a couple..." Other merchants inspect your slaves as well - although the sale will be formalized, most like to get a preliminary agreement to the slaves they want. Based on the numbers tossed around you're head, you'd imagine you can make about the following amounts:

>Kula: 500s
>Bessa: 350s
>Elf: 200s
>Ilandra: 400s

You also get some interest in a lease of Kula for a month, for 75 sterling, and a couple propositions to lease Ilandra for the night for a few drams, plus one offer from a particularly unkempt looking man to lease the elf for a night, at a quarter-sterling.
>>
>>31055338
I say we keep them all and put them to work, Kula we can find mercenary or heavy labor work, Bessa can do minor labor for clothes-making and Ilandra can help the Elf and work at a doctors, healing for profit.

Lets see what work offers we can get for them.
>>
>>31055338
>No selling.

Try to figure out what the lease on Kula actually entails, what kind of work will she be doing? As for the one wanting Ilandra for the night, ask her if her religions forbids her from having sex or not, and if she would consent to the task. If either are in the negative then refuse, and tell her to focus on healing our Elf. Say no to the unkempt looking man, if he tries anything Kula can have fun with him.

Consensus is great. Writing now.

After some dickering, you end up leasing Kula for a tidy sum of 81 sterling. She will be returned to you in one month, you gather that she'll be plowing fields in the meanwhile. She certainly has the bulk for it.

You decide to keep all slaves but one off the podium, but Bessa goes up. One bidder seems to want her a bit more than he originally let on, and she ends up going for 370s. You now have 451s, 58d. Enough to buy your freedom with plenty left over. Which is good, because your lodgings are on plantation grounds, and you're going to need to get a new place to stay and keep your slaves.

And that's where we'll pick up tomorrow. I'll use the same thread if it's still here, same OP image otherwise•

It happened that both dice rolls went well. You have a pretty generous barter bonus, not for any particular reason other than that it's more fun to usually get more than you estimated than to usually get less. It was still top quartile rolls on both transactions, though.

>>31055700
Dark Elf Female, but it's not canonically revealed yet because I didn't want to touch on backstory until the premise was solid. I think I'll get into that stuff tomorrow. Name and clan too, and some setting details regarding the race.

Wila, which is a brand that was homebrewed on /tg/ six or seven years ago and I've since adapted slightly for my own use. Actually, that description applies to the whole setting.

Yeah, that way we know it's starting. And unless you start the moment you wake up, the thread will probably have been pruned
>>
>>31055809
>Should I tweet about it even if it winds up being in the same thread?
Yes, its always good to tweet when your running, post session times in advance, link threads and notifying us when you resume posting in a thread.
>>
>>31055811
That'll probably be covered when we move into our backstory, which he said should be coming next session.
>>
>>31055809
>Should I tweet about it even if it winds up being in the same thread?
Yes, not everybody keeps threads open, so they'll miss the quest restarting just the same as if it's a new thread, without a tweet.

You might want to make new threads anyway even if an old one is still up, so that they form complete chapters/sessions and don't just flow into each other.

You could add your twitter to the QTG register of QM twitters.

Half of your investment is led off, the goblin to a new home and the gnoll to some temporary work. As they disappear the planter who leased her tries to check her teeth, but a lazy snap of her jaw dissuades him. The goblin resists only verbally, but you don't mind seeing the back of her either. The slaves you're left with seem more docile, the human woman Ilandra standing, apparently serene even in bondage, with her hands tied in front of her and rags tied about her waist, leaving her upper body to shine in the sun. The sickly elf is only a bit better dressed, with some cloth wrapped around her chest as well. Both look like they have seen better days, and they no doubt have.

But the most important thing is the heavy bag of silver now held in your own hands.

First things first, you'd like to find somewhere to keep these new slaves, and yourself as well. Luckily, the city of Sinodan is a new city, and land speculation is common, so there are plenty of recently erected options to pick from, their builders eager to turn a profit. Most of them are wood, and the building quality is less than you'd find in the old world, but with a relative dearth of truly skilled artisans, that's how it'll have to be. You look over the options, keeping in mind that though you have a good 451 sterling, your debt is 300. Luckily, you could probably talk most of these prices down a bit.

>Small home
Located on the edge of town. A bedroom, a kitchen, a main hall, and an outhouse a good fifty paces out. Asking price: 100s. The seller says he knows a guy, and will throw in some basic furniture as well.

>Farmhouse
A good few hours' walk from the city, you didn't inspect this personally. The seller assures you that it is a very regal and well-constructed affair, with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a hall, a barn, a smokehouse, and an outhouse at 150 paces. Asking price: 200s. He assures you it comes with the fifty acres around it, but you know that land ownership is pretty impromptu once you get away from the cities on this continent.

cont
>>
>>31060335
>Mansion
A truly regal home, if totally unfurnished. It's in a nice neighborhood a few blocks from the market - far enough to avoid the noise but close enough to walk their easily. The building is two stories high, with a kitchen, dining hall, drawing room, study, and a small room that the seller suggests would make a good walk-in coat closet on the ground floor. The upper floor has an immense master bedroom, two smaller bedrooms, and three "servants rooms". Because of its central location, there is no outhouse, but there's a discreet channel to the side where chamberpots may be emptied. Of course, a place like this is in high demand. The seller suggest that you would be happy to part with 500 sterling for it.

You agree to walk out to the farmhouse and check it out. The journey takes longer than anticipated, because the elf moves slowly and you're unwilling to push her too hard despite being a slave, since she's sick. The house is only slightly worse than described. It looks like it's been sitting here for a while and needs a good cleaning and a coat of paint, but it's still in pretty decent condition. Nonetheless, it puts you in a good position to barter. After some dickering, you get the price down to 150 sterling, meaning you could buy it outright if you'd like and still pay off your indent, but then you'd be almost out of money for clothes and furnishings.

>Buy outright at 150s,
>Buy at half down
>Buy at 100 down

After mentioning financing, the seller, an honest-faced human of middling age, decides he'll take installments but will charge you an interest rate. You arrive at 4% compounded monthly, and he makes much about how generous he's being to an up-and-comer and tells you how he was in your position once himself.
>>
>>31061088
100 down seems best to me it will be easier to pay off
>>
>>31061088
>Buy at 100 down.
That gives us 5 weeks to pay it off which seems rather easy and is reasonable.
>>
>>31061088
>Buy at 100 down
Gives us some spare change while paying off most of the cost. Important if we are in sudden need of repairs for the new house. Never trust someone who is described as "honest-faced".

>the elf moves slowly and unwilling to push her too hard despite being a slave, since she's sick
>not piggybacking her halfway in the interest of saving time before remembering that we have slaves now and passing her to Ilandra
>>
>>31061088
>Buy at 100 down
also ask for some advice.
>>
You cheerfully hand him the 100 sterling, and he signs the deed to you as well as making up a quick contract for the debt. Since he said he was in your position, you ask if he has any advice, but it's nothing you couldn't have guessed. "Always invest. Don't worry too much about comfort when you can't afford it, keep that money for something that has a better return. Then you can afford to be comfortable at my age."

"You can stay here", you tell the elf. She sits down in a corner of the bare house and curls up. "Ilandra, come along." It's the better part of an hour to get to your old plantation. Once there, you stroll up to the home of your soon-to-be-former owner, not bothering to hide the grin that stretches from one ear to another. The place is all but deserted since it's a holy day, so when you knock at his door it takes a while before you're answered, and its your owner's cook. "I've got money to pay my indent outright", you tell her, and she brings you in to his sitting room and goes to fetch him. The old dwarf comes after a few minutes, checks that your coin is real and not shaved, then congratulates you warmly and tells you that you can take your time clearing out, and to keep him in mind when you find good workers, if you're going to keep up the slave trade.

After that you go to your old room to gather your things. It doesn't take long. You have two outfits in addition to the one on your back, all three plain, a bundle of bones engraved with your family's history, and your grandfather's story mask, carved with the blank face of the faceless god Zantos. These things and a woefully small purse are all you were able to take with you when you fled Zirnatraog. Painfully little, but you have what you need to keep your bloodline from dying out in the eyes of the gods. You have Ilandra carry your spare clothing, but it's not for an outsider to tough the other things. Them you enclose in burlap and carry yourself.

You head back into town. It makes sense to see how much your budget will stretch before you start spending, after all.

You hit a furniture shop first, and find what you need. The old man working there assures you he will have his sons deliver your purchases at no extra charge.

>Beds
• Cheap bunks, hay mattress 100d
• Mid-tier, on mostly feathers 3s
• Magnificent canopy bed with down and imported silks 10s (large enough for three)

>Tables

• smaller side tables 18d

>Stoves
• Small kitchen stove 4s
• Large space-heating stove 6s

>floor covering
• rushes 15d
• Large rug 1s

>inquire for specific other things

You also have Ilandra purchase medicines. She's able to find some appropriate herbs for a quarter sterling, but tells you that another herb would help more against the salt curse, at a sterling and a half.

Finally, you look into clothing. You can have a good solid outfit made to any design you care for at under 1s if it's common cloth, but you would need to spend more for silks, furs, or jewelry. Ilandra suggests warm clothing for the elf, and requests that she be allowed to keep her breasts bare in deference to the Sun. Please feel free to draw outfits on accompanying image, if you like.

You purchase four beds to be delivered, a long dining table, a large stove and rushes, plus some blankets for the elf. You also pick up a whip and bell-collars, securing the whip at your hip and affixing one of the collars to Ilandra immediately. Although you'd like custom bells, these generic ones will do for now.
You decide to spare no expense on medicine, since the elf is worth more than enough to justify it, and get proper herbs. You also pick out some plain but solid clothing for the two slaves.

It's getting nearly dark, and after you pay, the furnisher informs you that your purchases will not be delivered until tomorrow, so you buy some extra blankets and load them up on Ilandra. Then it's a long dusk-shrouded walk back home. Ilandra finds a bucket in the smokehouse and sets about hauling water in from the creek, setting up a fire in the yard, and brewing a tea of the elf's medicine. It is only as your stomach begins to rumble that you recall that you didn't buy any food - that kind of mundane logistical endeavor was never your responsibility before. You settle in with the elf and blankets, less than comfortable but far from unhappy - you may still be putting your estate together, but you're fully free and your fortunes will clearly only climb from here.

Any last things you want to do before ending the day? I'm gonna disappear for an hour or two imminently, but updates will resume afterward.

If you fail to pay, you could end up indentured again, but you doubt that will happen now. But getting back out of debt is probably still the first priority, and then you can look into making enough to invest - either in additional slaving and trade endeavors or in local businesses. Perhaps some day you'll own the whole town and every ship that comes into it, the way your great grandfather owned the city of AtraoÊ’an back in Zirnatraog. That was long before you were born, but even if the family is only you right now, it's headed up again. These images fill your dreams, and you see yourself wearing the mask of the Faceless god, conquering this sparsely populated continent, riding on the back of a remorhaz with a face like Ilandra's and a sun tattoo between its massive breasts.

Feel free to plan for tomorrow at this time.
>>
>>31064733
I suggest we look into finding Ilandra decent paying work and seeing checking out the slave markets
>>
>>31064733
So we'll be buying good and checking out the limits of our estate tomorrow right?

When we get Kulla back in a month we can get her to start building a fence to illustrate the limits of our property, as OP said that land rights were vaugeish at best.
>>
>>31064733
Get food of course, can't let us and our slaves starve. We'll also need to find Ilandra work, even if it is prostitution or something for a while. But never accept low prices if it does come to that, we need to earn profit to pay our debts.

As for when Kula gets back, yeah we can have her build a fence or something for us. Unless one of our other slaves feels up to the task before she comes back.
>>
>>31064733
Also we should chat with Ilandra and the elf lady about how they personally feel about being slaves, even if only to get some idea on what we should expect.
>>
>>31064733
Also a question about the setting while we're here, what are the current slave laws? For example how much can you beat a slave, can you work them to death and be fine in the eyes of the law?

What kind of punishments are dished out to slave owners if the laws are against such things, also what is the age limit for slaves? How young can a slave legally be, and do prices get higher or lower the younger a slave is?

I'm asking just so we know for the future, depending on what kind of slaves we find at market or something, or if we run foul of the law.
>>
>>31064733
We should look through town for maybe a clinic we can set Ilandra to work at.

We should talk to the elf to see what her skillset is.

We should see if we can find ourselves some work we can do at the farm. Just because we own slaves doesnt mean we dhould sit on our hands yet.

You wake, plans for the day already flowing through your mind like water, but they are momentarily shaken from your head as you become aware of your surroundings. The elf needs some time to recover from her illness, regardless of how we employ her after, so let her sleep.

Ilandra makes the most sense at a clinic/low-criticality medical situation. If we have to have her work on her back till then, so be it.
>>
You gently ruffle her hair. Her eyes open and look at you blearily, before she suddenly realizes her position and jerks back. She's probably not fully healthy yet but that action alone cheers you, since she's more responsive than she was yesterday. In fact, she begins to mumble something to you. Something made of Ls and Rs, and you realize she's speaking the Sidhe tongue. "Can't you speak Trade?" you ask her. She stops mumbling and is silent. So, that's probably a no. You don't speak Sidhe, but perhaps she knows a bit of the Wila tongue. You try again in a language you've not spoken in years. "Do you only speak Sidhe?" This time she responds. "Speak little." Better than nothing. You look her over. "How are you feeling. Still sick?" She doesn't seem to understand, but you look her over. She's better than she was. Ilandra is stirring now too. "It'll be a week before she's properly better, but it looks like the medicine is having an effect."

There's a lot of things you can do now.

At home:
>continue talking (specify what to say)
>inspect grounds
>wait to meet the furniture deliverers.

A slave taken in raiding, as these were, is owned entirely. But being overly cruel is still frowned upon by society, and this area is lawless enough that this matters more than any formal rules - those rules come from the current ruler of the city, Sinod. It is from him that its name Sinodan comes. Those enslaved by contract generally include stipulations for their treatment, and those are legally binding. However these slaves are far less common in practice, because few people want to be slaves and there's plenty to be taken in war-torn Tsilokar anyway.

"What's your name?" You ask the elf. She points to herself for confirmation and you nod. "Silirillija il Rislirijill". The Sidhe think names like that are pretty. They probably like that everyone else has a hard time pronouncing them, too. You nod. "What marketable skills do you have, Sil?" She looks at you blankly. "What are you good at?" Nothing. "Are you good at anything?" She nods hesitantly. That's something, assuming she actually understood. "What?" She looks incredibly frightened. "Don't know word" and then something in the Sidhe tongue. You turn to Ilandra, who has been silent. "I don't suppose you know any SIdhe?" "No, ma'am."

You're clearly not getting anywhere here, so you go out to inspect the grounds. Ilandra busies herself making more tea, and Silirillija sits next to her, still bundled in blankets. Even though your land is supposed to be pretty large, it doesn't take long to see it all, because it's flat meadow. This soil looks like it's never seen a plow, and small stones are everywhere. It'll take a lot of work to cultivate this. The creek which makes up one border of your lot flows through a low gully, and probably has some fish. If nothing else, the water is clear and clean. In the other direction are some low wooded hills. That's not part of your land officially, but for all you know it's not part of anyone's land. You could definitely get away with cutting firewood and hunting there. You find that someone has left a carving knife in the smokehouse and a few tools in the barn, but no plow.
>>
While looking about, you spot a small caravan in the distance and head over to meet it. It's a large cart, but you're still surprised that it could hold everything you ordered. The stove is the only thing which required its own cart. At your direction, the three large men that came along distribute furniture around the house, all three of them hauling the iron stove in and hooking it up to a metal pipe that you assume must be the chimney. They finish up and wish you a good day as they head back.

>go into town with them?
>other

Also decide what Ilandra and Silirillija should be doing.
>>
>>31067170
>go into town with them?
Silirillija is well enough to clean, so let's get her on that. Ilandra still needs to find work, so she's with us. She'll be useful as a pack mule while we shop at least.
>>
>>31067170
>Go into town with them.

My reason for this is we need Ilandra to be around while looking for jobs for her, but the Elf I'm sure can stay home. Or help carry some things if she's healthy enough.

Fresh air might also do her some good.
>>
>>31067252
I also agree to get Sill doing some light chores around the house, only easy things though.
>>
>>31067170

>>

>>
>>31067170
Set Sil to basic cleaning duties.
Take Ilandra into town, look for work.
>>
>>31067307
Seconding thing.

We need to find something for Ilandra to do. Maybe she can work for the town apothecary? At worst she can work at a bordello both on her back and as a healer of uncomfortable 'irritants'
>>
You look to Ilandra. She's finished the tea and Silirillija is drinking it. "Ilandra, you're coming with me again. Silirillija, try to clean up around here or something. Don't work too hard." She nods, but it's not clear how much she understood.

In town, you search around for any work that might be had. The Apothecary doesn't need any help, and the local Sun temple won't pay for it, but you do find a bordello down by the docks that will pay a half sterling a night for Ilandra. Other than that, there's menial labor on a plantation or at the docks, which anyone can do for 20 drams. You also pick up food to last a while, mostly breads and cheeses but also some smoked beef and vegetables.

Before we actually purchase any, we need to find out what seeds they have on sale and the costs.

>because thats what she was wearing doesn't mean she was comfortable.
She requested to remain bare-breasted when you bought her clothing too. The Sun is important to the fertility of humans as well as of fields, and bare breasts are a common requirement for her priestesses.

>>31068324
This won the vote anyway.
>>
>>31067880
>>Don't employ Ilandra

>Buy seeds
she can start us a garden
>>
Over lunch, you ask Ilandra how she feels about the bordello. She looks surprised that you ask her opinion. "I am happy to serve the Sun wherever she may put me." You thought it seemed reputable enough to be safe, so that's one thing settled then.

After eating, you go to investigate seed prices.

You could plant an acre of sugar with three quarter-sterling barrels of seed, or 108 drams/acre. It's a profitable export crop, but it might be unwise to directly compete with your former employer, who happens to be one of the richest men in town.

You could also try growing tobacco, which is a native crop that some have taken to rolling up and smoking as the kobolds do, and has recently been a profitable export crop as well - but its value is much less stable. Tobacco grows less densely, and you could plant a whole acre on just two barrels of quarter-sterling seed, or 72 drams/acre.

Rice is a popular staple in Everoc and Tsilokar, and is being grown here too. You do have access to a creek, so you could flood your fields for the rice and get high-volume output. Rice seed is priced the same as tobacco seed.

Ilandra volunteers that wheat is the holy creation of the Sun, and feels the Sun's blessing more strongly than other crops. You're not entirely sure how much of that is true and how much is doctrinal nonsense, but wheat is a good crop anyway, with solid returns. It can plant two acres on three barrels, or 54 drams/acre.

You also investigate the price of a plow, since it will be very difficult to plant any notable area without one. Even with one, it will take two people or an ox to plow. Tula might have been strong enough to do it alone, but she's not here now. The cheapest plow you find is two sterling.

>What seed will you buy?
>Buy plow?

Additionally, even after your purchases it's still afternoon, before Ilandra is required at the bordello.

>How will you spend the time?
>>
>>31068705

We do admin work. Once the Sil is healthy and whoring, we'll have Ilandra and Kula (when she finishes her work) to plant and water the seeds. That's enough to run a farm. We can pitch in ourselves if necessary, and Kula can do other people's work when it's not harvest time.
>>
>>31068982
We're literate aren't we? That should be a relatively rare-ish quality given the time period. Clerking any book-keeping for some merchant (at least for a bit) should pay a lot better than dam manual labour - that shits for slaves.

She's our slave, not our sister.

Earning less money will only mean we're all worse off (including her) later. What if we can't feed our slaves or need to give them even worse jobs because cash is tight and we didn't earn what we could have earlier?

Besides, we mustn't look weak in front of her. We make the decisions.

We can do math for someone if we get indentured again. For now, we're free and can use our talents to invest our own money and fill our own pockets.

The closest we should come to doing math for anyone else is taking out a loan to pay for seeds, plow and labor to plant our plantation, in exchange for a split of the profits.

None, we're already in debts and there's no reason to further it.

>Other ways to make money
Look for work as a bookkeeper or accountant, maybe even a scribe or a copyist. We can at least toil until we can finish paying for the farm.
