Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

What if Delan is the fourth demon lord in hiding (since we couldn't sense a demon lord while in the palace) and the servant girls were his succubi summons and all of his talk was just a trick to bait us into helping him since the Avatar of Chaos would've informed the Demon Lords of our nature before expiring and how does Joey figure into all of this?

Recent Events Summary:

Your enemies are still lacking a vital component of their plan, a component which may provide you with a window of opportunity to save Sir Flint. While Hemmelus's proposition of a mid-battle ambush using the power of Chronomancy is daring, to say the least. Hecate has told you she'd be able to donate enough power to make the spell a reality, and Auriel is more than happy to take advantage of the spell's unique properities using the Nemesis's new weapon systems. With Yi Fang leading your forces in battle, you're confident in your chances - if you can keep Sandalphon under control, that is.

Hecate assisted you on a Dream Walk. You were able to locate Donovan's dream, calm his nightmares, and tell him about the plan. He seemed a bit shaken, but lucid.

In telling Yi Fang about your greater plan, you revealed the truth of your origins. He took it rather well, all considered.

Thanks to your powers, Abigail's hand is restored, and then some. The Nemesis has been upgraded several times over, having cannabalized both the Ragnarok's weapons and the Jump Drive from the Noiralev's wreckage.

The war meeting has come and gone. While Fang's battle plan went relatively unopposed, Sandalphon will be joining you when you infiltrate Kan-Abar to kill the summoners that are maintaining the demon lords. Of course, he needs them for his own plan - so his help is likely to be mixed. At the same time, you need his plan to be successful - up to the point that he brings Sir Flint out into the open.

After the meeting, you decided to place your teleport anchor at the battlefield in preparation, and then traveled to Kan-Abar to scout out the enemy headquarters and add the Earth mana pool there to your growing manaport network. The mages have seemingly been slowly corrupted by the demons - their minds are bent away from the possibility of compromise and peace. A young mage named Delan, that appears to have resisted this process, was almost cornered when he spoke his worries about the demons aloud, but having followed him through the palace, you snatched him from the jaws of death, along with a two of his servant aquaintences.

You're now back in Arland. It's about 3am - still pitch black. After today, there are 4 days until the attack commences.

>Last time...

After Pocketing the two women, ou open up a portal, carefully trying to keep the magic under control, more so than usual. It takes you a bit longer, but you think you do a good job of it - at least, no demons come running to stop you, anyway.

You jump through your portal, and just like that, you're in the Evinbrook Basin, on the edge of the battlfield atop a few hills.

With some very odd cargo.

How do you get into these situations?

It's still dark out. You need to get these people out of your Pocket soon. The longer they're in there, the worse it gets.

You could let them out now, but it might be better to travel to Arland, first.

What do you do?

>let them out of your pocket and have a chat
>take them somewhere more private and then have your talk
>take them back to Arland; go to Yi Fang, who should still be awake
>take them back to Arland; Adavan will be able to pick their brains

We need to get away from the demonic capital of the world.

There is no way they could pose a threat to Shadow, so i think we are safe to just take them out while alone. If it doesn't go well we can pocket them again and take them to Adavan.

>>
>>31028056
It's gonna be silly me saying this, but could we possibly release them where there is some light, and talk to them with a HUMAN form? I think that'd be best for not scaring the hell out of them by just dropping them on the ground in during the pre-dawn hours.

>If we want to intimidate them we can take them to Hecate.
If we wanted to intimidate them, we could pick pretty much anybody we know aside from Joey.

Including OURSELVES.

We're going to have a hard enough time getting them (and especially the servants) calm enough that we can talk like reasonable people, and it's only going to get harder the longer they're left in our Pocket.

That said, a little longer in the Pocket to buy us some time to get to a place with furnishings so they feel somewhat safe rather than unceremoniously dumping them on a hillside probably goes a way to setting them at ease.

If we just let them out in the middle of nowhere, they're not going to know if we're just setting them free to wander on their own, or interrogating and then stuffing them back into darkness. If we do it in a building, with chairs and lights, they'll feel like we're at least trying to help them first and foremost.
>>
>>31028234

That's cool.

The latter half of the first season is still good, but it's a little slow-paced. I feel the season kinda tripped up a little when it focused on the kiddie band for five episodes straight. Two or three would have done the trick. Is the manga ahead on this stuff? I think it would actually work a lot better as a comic on a whole.

These two gals here talked about you a bit, so I brought them along. They aren't insurance or anything, oh by the way would you like to defect to Arland, or say, Haven perhaps? I think the manga is one of those "copy the anime to make more sales" things. They do have a manga about a side-story, however, dealing with the one kid who has the harem. Mite b cool.

We know Delan was going to be getting those two out, but we don't know where he was planning on getting them.

We'd like a little more information about Delan's suspicions that he was voicing to his fellow mages, and hopefully confirmation on who that guy was who seemed to be on to him (assuming it wasn't Nulis himself based on being Wind and Lightning rather than Fire like Obis. the ram's head motif might mean it is, but we don't know whether that's just a Kan-Abar thing or royal family-specific.)

Also whether there are other mages like him who would also be willing to flee, and how we might be able to find them. Or if he's the big-shot running the world's tiniest Kanian Underground Railroad, whether or not there's anything that he left behind that might implicate other smaller cogs in the machine.

Assure them that we're willing to take them to safety and aren't just going to let them loose in the woods to fend for themselves once we're done.
>>
>>31028717
IIRC the Imp on his shoulder we felt Wind and Lightning from, but the man we didn't feel anything from.

Fire magic stealth OP.
>>
You leap off the hilltop and spread your wings.

It's a dark night, no moon. The demonic armies are a few dozen miles north, so there are probably patrols around. You keep your aura suppressed and glide slowly.

You pass over a encampment set along the river. The glow of several fires show you where the tents of soldiers and mages are, but your night vision betrays the real size of the forward outpost - significant. The demons don't need light to see, either.

About an hour of careful flying later, you touch down at the border of the Great Forest. The dark wood rises up from the plains suddenly, like a cliff at the edge of the ocean. You use a bit of mana to form a few soft lights. They'll probably be frightened enough as it is.

>mana: 72/76

You pick a soft-looking spot on the grass and unPocket your three pieces of cargo.

>mana: 69/76

They fall on the ground with a sharp thump.

Immediately, shrieking fills the air. The old woman is bawling her eyes out and wailing as loud as she can - no words, just sounds. The girl is curled up into a ball and shivering.

Delan is the only one that manages any sort of composure. He's on his hands and knees, crawling across the ground toward the young woman. "Ph...phoebe. Pheeb. Is that you? Are you ok?"

"Delan?"

"I'm here. Where..."

Delan spots you. You've taken your human form to reduce the impact, but his eyes widen nonetheless. He falls back on his hands and scoots away, putting himself between you and the girl, Phoebe. "...who are you? What is this?"

"My name is John Nyx," you say. "I'm sorry about the rough treatment, but it was the only way I could get you of of the palace. The demons had you cornered."

"...you...Nyx - what - I don't..."

>You feel a looming presence ahead. It feels like Wind and Lightning. It's strong, and it feels like it's keeping its true strength suppressed.

Pretty sure this wasn't just an imp, and judging by the elements of the Imp and who it seemed to be subservient to, it was probably the guy we ran into.
>>
"I was spying on the palace gardens when I found you," you say. "I overheard your conversation with the other mages and decided to follow you. When it looked like you were surrounded, I decided to get you out of there. You were clearly the only lucid one in the bunch, and I wasn't just going to let you die like that."

"...what was that dark place?"

"It's a pocket of space between here and the Nether," you explain. "It's a good way to store things, but it's not really built for people. I had no other way of getting out of there. It was that, or your life."

Delan takes a few long breaths. He starts to nod. "Ok. Ok. Shit. Thank you. That was really bad. I thought...I thought I was dead, honestly." Delan turns to the still-whining old woman. "Pamela, try to get it together. You'll attract attention." Pamela continues to whimper, albeit more quietly. Delan looks back at you. "Lord John Nyx. I've heard rumors about you. Thank you for saving me. Us." He rubs Phoebe's shoulder. She's starting to uncurl from her fetal position. "You doing okay, Pheeb?"

"...yeah. I'm ok."

Delan looks at the lights, then takes in the edge of the forest. "...woods? We're either in Felnoir or Vampiria. Or northern Kelvere?"

"Just at the edge of the Great Forest. Far eastern Kelvere."

"You sure travel fast. So, uh...what now?"

What do you ask of or say to Delan?

>write-in

You judge that the presence you sensed was similar to the Imp, but stronger.

You aren't sure what that man's elements were; you didn't really have time to feel him out, and if he was a mage, he was pushing his aura low.

If he wishes for a new home, we could offer a place in Haven. A certain specialist friend of ours would have check him over if he decided to, though. No offense and all that, but these are times where you can't really be too careful especially when dealing with demons on this scale.

"Well," you say, "I've got a few questions. I realize you're probably a little strained at the moment."

"...I owe you my life, more or less," Delan says. "And I think my friends need a bit more time to unwind, so go ahead."

"You said you heard rumors about me?"

Delan nods. "Well, yeah. Apparently you're the leader of the angelic schism, have founded some kind of secret society that has forged an alliance between Archon and Arland, which everyone thought would hate one another for the rest of eternity, and you tend to fly in the face of the Ring City. Which puts you up there with the Archmage, if I'm honest. M'lord."

"John is fine. I'm not really a titles kind of guy." You think for a moment. "What were you trying to do back there, exactly?"

"Go to the kitchens, like you must have heard," Delan says. "Phoebe and I are...involved, and I wanted to get her out of the city before something happened. I thought that if a few other mages were on my side, our chances of escaping would go up. Those men were all my friends. I've known two of them since we studied together in the capital's university. You saw how they were acting. The demons got to them. And then...they already had me penned in, I guess. All it took was admitting that I wasn't loyal to the cause."

"So the demons are influencing the Kanian mages at large?"

"I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I should do with you. Saving you was a high risk gamble that has already altered that Imp that something was amiss. So the question is, what can you do for me?"

Delan nods. "Every summoner knows you put your demons away when you're done with them. Intelligent tools are a double-edged sword. Sure, they're powerful, and can use magic - but that means they'll try to bend the magic you used to summon them. Or bend you, if they can. Right now, the demonic army has been kept in place, fully summoned, for over a year. And they're changing. I tried to keep good habits, kept desummoning my own minions. I knew something was wrong when the orders went out to contradict basic good practice and have a standing army of mostly demons. I should have left sooner...but..."

"I don't blame you," you say. "Just listening to them was a little disturbing. Is the effect reversible?"

"Well, it's the demons doing it. Their influence presses down on their summoners, especially if the summonder exceeds a safe capacity. So if they were killed...it wouldn't be instant reversion, but that influence would drop away, and over a week or two they'd probably go back to normal."

"Can you tell me anything about your forces, or how you heard about me? They must have spies in Arland."

Delan shakes his head. "I just heard through the grapevine. Barracks talk. Don't know where the info came from. But as far as our forces go...is there anything in particular?"

"We have a good grasp of your numbers and position, but what about the demon lord in Kan-Abar? We know about the other three, but not that one."

Delan nods. "I've felt him before. It's Wind and Lightning, an extremely powerful mage-type. It itself commands a significant group of devils that it summoned up from the Nether - all mages of the same element. They all have a bevy of Imps under their command. You probably saw them."

You nod. "Any traits I should know about?"

>con't
>>
"Lightning for offense, mostly. They're extremely fast because of their combination magics, but physically weak. Well, relatively speaking. If you could get close enough, you could probably do some damage."

You smile. "I'm pretty fast myself. I'll keep that in mind." You think a moment. "Who was that man back there? With the ram painted on his cape?"

"It wasn't painted, it was woven with magic," Delan says. "And that was King Nulis himself."

"...I see. What can you tell me about him?"

"What's there to tell?" Delan asked. "He ran his brother out because he was jealous over his fiance and his popularity. He wanted to use Kan-Abar's power to expand while Vampiria, Archon, and the empire squabbled over 700-year-old feuds. Obis wanted to build a merchant empire and lead through trade. They just had a different way of looking at the world."

"Is he strong?"

"A very powerful fire mage," Delan says, "on-par with any other greats you could name. I think he's personally responsible for two of the demon lords."

Is there anything else you ask Delan?

Delan leans back. He shakes his head. "...I would really prefer not to do something like that."

"Any reason why?"

"...I'm sure you already figured they have spies in Arland," he says. "Maybe not in your upper leadership, but people close enough to get a vague idea of what you're planning. If they see me...you don't understand what Nulis has become. He's vindictive. He'll hunt me down and put my head on display just to terrorize others like me into obedience. The main strike plan is impossible to hide because of the large level of public preparation, but it's worth noting that discussion of the stealth party and distraction were limited to the highest level of talks only. Furthermore, the exact battle plan is still very much top secret.

After the public incident of the Nemesis against two imperial airships, they're probably aware of the Nemesis's existence, if not its capabilities.

"...I could lay low until after the war."

"Do you think that will work."

Delan rubs the back of his neck. He sighs. "...maybe?"

Guys, what if Sandalthong kills Leviathan?

Leviathan is gonna be crazy weak after waking up and Sandalthong is crazy strong.

If Dave is almost as strong as Hyperion and Sandals is half as strong as Dave then Sandals is a little less than half as strong as an Elemental Lord and Leviathan won't be near half strength.

And you know Sandalthong won't even hesitate to kill a Lesser Elemental Lord.

Why are we setting them up with rooms? You shrug. "You don't. But you'll be surrounded by some of the most powerful mages in the world. I'll guard you myself."

Delan manages a smile. "...I guess that makes me feel a bit better."

------------

You try to ignore the shrieking Pamela on the flight down to Arland. Delan apologizes for her over the rush of the wind. Phoebe, to her credit, bites down and keeps her eyes closed.

Luckily, the screaming ball of old age doesn't attract attention.

------------

The door opens. A slightly disheveled Prince Obis comes in. Considering it's barely light out, you forgive him for not appearing at his best.

You're sitting in the room with Yi Fang, Lien Adavan, and Melody, the Black Lady. Delan sits on a chair, shrinking back away from the intimidating figures. Phoebe and Pamela are in an adjacent room, watched over by Ila and one of Melody's bodyguards.

Fang has been quizzing Delan for a solid twenty minutes, asking any number of questions concerning many minor things you wouldn't have normally thought important. Most of Delan's answers amount to 'I don't know', but he is able to provide some extra information. You pay especial attention when he talks about Kan-Abar's defenses - those fire-towers are powerful magical emplacements meant to take down airships and any other airborne foes. You're glad you weren't spotted on the way in.

He's elaborated somewhat about the fourth demon lord. It is the strongest of the four - they've each gotten progressively stronger. Fang believes that's a natural outcome of the other demon lords helping to summon more powerful successors. The first two were the physically powerful demon that morphs and mutates, along with the demon that seems to rely on poison and disease as a means of attack. The third, the demon that has powerful shadow magic and good physical strength, is a level higher than them. The fourth is yet another tier of power higher. Some whisper it could put up a fight against an elemental lord.

You're also glad you decided not to push your luck alone in the capital.

Obis moves between Adavan and Fang. He looks down at the man. "...you are Delan Assan?"

Delan stares. "...my prince. I..." Delan's face crumples. "Everything is wrong. Nulis is mad. He's gone mad."

"...it's that bad."

"Worse, from what I can tell," Fang says. "This is going to be close. Too close."

"...have you any word of Kullia?" Obis asks. "Is she alright?"

"She is said to be sequestered in the palace's lower levels," he says, "and in good health. But..."

"But what?"

"She...I believe she is working in concert with Nulis, your highness."

Obis draws back. "What? That makes no sense at all."

"A few men said...after you left...they said she'd plotted against you with him. She distracted you while he seized began consolidating power in your blind spot."

"I won't hear it," Obis said. "By the elements, that's true madness."

"That very emotion may have been the weakness that enabled your downfall," Fang says. "She would be counting on your rationalizations."

Obis's face flashes in a rare moment of anger. "Archmage, do not test me here. I am as sure as the desert is hot. She is no traitor. Nulis acted alone, or with someone else. Kullia...perhaps he means to make me doubt her. Make us doubt her. Another wedge in the gaps."

"Obis," you say, "something that bears mentioning. When I was in Jacob's Field, while the first battle at Evinbrook was taking place, I heard soldiers talking about how Nulis was a puppet. They mentioned a she that was responsible for the summonings. At the time I dismissed it, but...I suspected. And this is more evidence to the fact that Kullia may not be our friend."

"She is absolutely loyal," he says. "I have no doubt."

"Inspiring," Fang says, "but emotional decisions do not a king make."

"This isn't emotional," Obis says. "She simply would not betray us like that. It's not in her. Unless she's an incredible actor, unless she fooled me from the word go - "

Fang's interruption echoes in thought - pointedly excluing Delan. <Unless it was all part of a greater plan to pit Kan-Abar against the Empire in a justifiable war so that Sandalphon can achieve the greater goal of bringing forth Hyperion. I understand that Kullia is a noble from the empire, yes? I had thought Vellik's theory too convoluted for Sandalphon. He tends to favor the blunt approach of overwhelming and immediate force. But a man can have many ideas in 700 years.>

We should probably say we're not saying she betrayed him, but the impossible has happened before, such as Erebus bringing all the nations together like this. This is a time were we have to consider every possibility, because anything IS possible.
>>
>>31030920
If we're going to press him, we should at least hedge slightly.

Summoning of ANY amount of demons, lords or no, for long periods begins to pollute the summoner's mental state. It's possible that even if she WASN'T traitorous, she could've been compelled to it by demonic influence.

She's confined to the castle, so maybe she is simply being used as the anchor for some of the demon lords rather than having willing summoned them herself.

We don't need to make him accept the possibility that she betrayed him, but we DO need to make him acknowledge the possibility that he may need to choose between her and his country.

"Obis," you say.

"Just leave it be."

"I can't," you say.

"You'd better."

"No," you say. "You're my friend, and I'm not letting you be ram-headed to the point of obliviousness. Maybe Kullia is loyal. But you know what the demons are doing to the mages, to the people in that city. You haven't been in the city for two years. Delan was able to avoid being influenced, but if she's been exposed to Nulis, to demon lords directly, for an extended time, who knows what's in her head? There might come a moment when you have to make the difficult choice. You can either think about it now, and try to prepare yourself, or you can freeze up later. And I'm not walking into Kan-Abar with you having not considered the possibility that is right in front of you. You have to ready yourself for the worst-case scenario."

"...I won't bother throwing your own arguments back at you," Obis says, "because I know what you're trying to say." He looks at Delan. "Young man. You know to keep quiet, yes?" Delan nods furiously. "You'll be under our protection until all this is over. Now. I've got a few questions for you."

Obis pulls up a chair - as far away from Fang as possible, on the other side of Melody.

"Actually," Delan says, "I was in charge of one of the towers. I know quite a bit about them. They're not really powerful alone, but they focus fire on a target in sync to produce a combination effect. There are 152 of them scattered through the city."

"Would it be possible to bombard them?"

Delan nods. "Yes - they have some shielding, but an airship's cannons would be able to take them out. The real problem is the numbers. Taking one down, or even a dozen, wouldn't effect the overall power much. They are fueled from the Fire mana pool, though. If you could disrupt the containment equipment there, you could bring them all down at once."

"That's under the palace?"

"Yeah. Normally you wouldn't have a chance of getting in there in once piece...but if it's you..."

Either she needs to come clean to fang

It seems like there's a main contingent that just wants to meditate until the date, followed by everyone that wants to take care of all the bells and whistles.

Why don't we meditate now, and then deal with the other things one-after another when you basically have nothing but free time?

Yes?

You give your farewells to Delan and the others for the moment. A brief check in the adjoining room shows a Ila sitting in a chair next to Melody's guard. She's idly flipping her knife to pass the time. Pamela and Phoebe are both asleep in their beds.

<How are things?> you ask her.

<Good. They fell asleep pretty soon after you brought them in.>

<Thanks for doing this.>

She smiles. <Incentive to get Delan to keep talking. It's good work.>

You leave the room and think on where to meditate for a moment. Your feet carry you up the stairs, not down to your room. You end up on the roof of the tower Donovan took you to when he was first showing you around the castle.

The sun has almost peeked above the horizon. In the pre-dawn light, the city is already wide awake - carts rumble across the bridges, and the periodic clanks of smithies are growing more and more frequent. The crowds in the castle town steadily thicken.

You sit down on the outer walk of the tower, folding your legs under you, and fall into yourself.

>(Hammer) - Strong
>{Resolve} - Strong

It feels slow going, but you make steady progress on both your offensive shards. You stretch your arms above your head as you wind back out of your half-sleep.

You blink your eyes open. Abigail is sitting next to you, back to the walkway's wall. She has a book in her hands. "...Abby? You been there long?"

"Oh, maybe an hour or two. Everywhere else in the castle seemed too crowded. People wanting things. Bleh. I felt you up here, so I decided to join you. You make for easy company when you're meditating."

"...hey, Abby?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you remember when I put you in my Pocket?"

"Sure."

"It...really seems to bother everyone else. It didn't bother you?"

She shrugs. "You've never bothered me."

You smile at her. "I'm glad...but that's not what I mean. It seems to deprive people of their senses. Everyone else has been disturbed. Even Auriel was shaken. But you took it very easily."

Abigail frowns. "It felt...just, I don't know. Like I'd taken a nap for a bit, and then you woke me back up. Didn't feel like any time had passed at all. I guess...I'm not 100% human, you know. Maybe that has something to do with it?"

"I guess. Well...it's good to know."

"Yeah."

You stand up. "I'm going to go talk to Melody about the staff of winds. If she's willing to lend its powers to Archon, we could get a big advantage in the battle."

"Melody...? Oh, right, the Black Lady! Heh, I forgot for a minute there." She thumbs at her book. "I could come with you, if you think it would help?"

If you're going to shit on another quest's QM, then please do so in the QTG.
>>
>>31032802
I was actually referring to Kubo in this case.

Seriously, what happened to Ichigo, man? He went from a school punk delinquent to just being.. nothing. He's, like, literally just an empty shell which Kubo inserts racial classes into now.

"Ooh, the enemy is a Gorgon. Better create a plot point to make Ichigo part-Gorgon."
>>

I get the connection. But why do we call quest masters QM instead of the traditional Dungeon Masters?

Kubo is a fucking hack is what happened.
Does good fashion though.
>>
>>31032856
Oh yeah. His fashion designs are great.

Shame that all the characters look the sa--

..I literally just now realized that all of Bleach's characters are just same-face mannequins which Kubo swaps out hair-pieces for alongside of the clothes.

>>31032832
I have that image which explains Kubos convoluted setting mechanics completely by creating more questions than answers, though I can't post it for reasons.
>>
>>31032874

Weapon or skill design is where he shines.
>>
>>31032874
Unfortunately that issue isn't only Kubos, lots of manga authors tend to make characters with the same face because that's all their used to seeing in Japan land.

>Skill design

Do you mean the abilities? 'Cause Quincies, Hollows and Shinigami all have the exact same base skillsets, just with different names. The rest of it is just 'the fuck am I reading?' tiers of convoluted abilities.

We literally now have a guy whose ability is IMAGINAAAATIIOOON~ in the current chapters.

Another reason why I love Oda. People give him shit for not drawing generic styles and often outrageously weird designs, but I appreciate the diversity in appearance that gives it its charm.

Kinda reminds me of the old 2nd Ed. artwork by DiTerlizzi, in the sense that he always did those sort of exaggerated features on characters to give them a kind of eccentric look.

I would go into the details on how wide the ability's are, but I feel like it would be straying too far from the topic at hand, Shadow Quest.

I know Kubo pulls a fuckload of shit out of his ass though. Like when the old dude curb stomped the quincy leader in a spectacularly anti-climactic way, only to be revealed that he was just a fucking mimic.

So I'm just going to stop here.

"Absolutely," you say. "Let's go."

You help her to her feet. She keeps a firm hold on your hand. You don't bother to contest the matter.

Rather than head for the stairs, she walks straight for the edge of the walkway. You're confused for a moment, but then you grin. She hops up to the banister, balancing on the rail, and then hops off, taking you along with her.

You glide through the air, propelled along by a little cloud of Spirit. You land in the gardens at the base of the main building, under the balcony of the ballroom. It's a short walk up a few flights of stairs to the guest suites, and then you're knocking at Melody's door.

You feel an awareness being cast over you both. Melody opens the door. "I thought you two would be getting ready."

"There's still a little time," Abigail says. "By the way, what are you wearing?"

"Black."

"Oh, come on," Abigail says. "Mix it up! How about ruby red?"

"That's just improper," Melody says. "Elements. I'm the Black Lady." She holds the door open for the both of you and shuts it behind you. An sigil flashes on the wood as it clicks closed. You feel an enchantment meant to keep your voices from leaking out settle into place.

"So?" Abigail says. She bounces down onto a couch. "Isn't black boring after a while?"

"A date is one thing. Wearing red while a man like -him- ostensibly courts me, in public - we have to be sure to send the right messages."

"Warm, hot red," Abigail says, "will send the perfect message."

"I have no intention of putting the color of blood anywhere near my person."

"...oh." Abigail clears her throat. "Um...sorry. I didn't think about that."

>con't
>>
"I've learned self-control," Melody says, "though I lived like a hermit for some time to do so. But it's best not to flirt with that sort of thing. Or Archmages, for that matter." She sits opposite Abigail. "Now, what did you two want to talk about?"

"It's a bit of a story," you say, "but it has to do with why we went to Xile in the first place."

"Yes," she says. "I realized that was how you knew my name, back then. Is this about the Staff?"

"More or less."

----------
----------

"...so that's why he encouraged my research," she says. "He had yet another weapon up his sleeve. Damn him for using me."

"Not a weapon," you say. "A shield. It's Abby's inheritance. Something to defend Archon, if it was ever attacked. But in this case, it would be defending more than just Archon."

"Fang always dresses things up in pretty words. They're hardly worth trusting."

"...he didn't tell me about that," she says.

"It's top secret," you tell her. "I was lucky he felt like telling me. I think he'd kept it under his hat so long that telling me was a way to get it off his chest. None of the other houses or councilors in Archon know about his fleet."

"Well," Melody says, "how do you expect the staff of winds to simply fall into his lap after all that? He'll want an explanation. He'll connect the dots."

"...maybe," Abigail says, "you could just tell him who you are."

"That's about as likely as me wearing red."

"All but certain, then," Abigail says.

"I see you inherited his sarcasm."

"I like to take the side of optimism."

"The answer," Melody says, "is no."

"But...my lady," Abigail says, "these are lives at stake. Even my uncle thinks this battle is too close to call. We need all the help we can get. Without the staff, we might actually..."

"I can use the staff if the occasion forces me to it," she says.

"That seems a poor excuse," Abigail says. "What if you're incapacitated? What if you don't react quickly enough?"

"What ifs won't sway me."

Abigail frowns. "My lady, if I may speak bluntly."

"Only if you're certain you won't regret it."

There's an edge to her voice, there, that you haven't heard before. Obis isn't the only one with a heart on the line, here...

Abigail takes a breath. She spreads her skirt over her knees. "My lady. You're taking a huge risk. You'll be putting us at a disadvantage because you can't get over what happened 100 years ago."

"Am I?" Melody says. "What happens when the battle is won and Fang promptly turns about and attacks one of his former allies with his new toys? Don't be so naive as to imagine that, within his subtleties and strategies, he isn't positioning himself to end in a better place than when all this started. If he smells blood that he can get away with spilling, he'll drown the Tairns in it."

"...that's not true," Abigail says. "He's done terrible things. Maybe he still would. But he'll listen to me when I tell him to stop. He's respecting my will and my word in taking Archon in a new direction."

"I was the same as you, once," Melody said. "He beguiled his...friend. He's beguiled his own niece."

Abigail's eyes shimmer. "You won't even give him a chance?"

"...I'm going on this fool's errand, aren't I?" Melody folds her arms. "Shadows of our souls, girl, don't stare at me with those eyes."

"But..."

>con't
>>
"I will hear what he has to say," she says. "But I won't promise anything."

"...will you tell him who you are?"

Melody stands. She walks around the couch. "You should both get ready. I'll meet you in the foyer."

Abigail looks at you and tilts her head to the door. You nod, and move out with her, walking down toward your rooms in the bottom of the castle.

<You did most of the work, there,> you tell her.

<I...know what she means. I felt what she's feeling, after the Archonium. I thought I'd never forgive him. Maybe, for that...I won't. But it's like you said, Shadow. The moment we believe he's beyond redeeming is the moment he cannot be redeemed.>

<...I guess I get it right every once in a while.>

"Hmm." She leans into your arm. "Pretty often, really."

Next thread: I'm not sure. No days off all this coming week...earliest might be Wednesday, but no promises.

Pre-Battle Activity List:

>test a shadowy appendage in the Wind mana pool
>speak to Hecate about Leviathan
>collect strong rocks for kinetic bombardment
>meditate all shards to MAXIMUM POWER
>attempt to reach the Kan-Abar Fire mana pool and disrupt the city's defensive towers
>attempt to steal enemy airships and feed them to the Nemesis/give them to allies
>check in with Ila and Auriel about Lord Waterford's slave ring
>ask Auriel if she made any progress with Raphael and Charmeine

Auriel can now speak telepathically - only at short ranges, though. She can also use a basic spirit whip-like attack.

I have a question about a particular summons, if I rember if you destroy a summons they don't die they return to the nether. If Abby tried to summon the part of her mother that was demon would it work or becase she was made human then it gave her a "soul" allowing her to die?

If she was summoned would she have memory/empathy from being human?

Fine.

>Weapons speak to the owner to unlock power
>A blade that doubles the weight of anything it strikes(stacks)
>A blade that is a guaranteed kill if it strikes twice(single strike in upgraded form)
>An ability that takes full control of what it lays its eyes on
>A sword that turns into a giant toxic mist spewing baby
>An ability to create voodooo dolls complete with organs you can destroy to damage the target
>Flaming skeletons of your dead enemies fight for you
>CERO
>Kenpachi
>Pic related, holy shit my cock is a diamond

My point is, there is an extremely wide variety to ability's in the Bleach universe. But far too often a new bullshit ability is taken out of nowhere to deal with a new problem. It would be nice if he took a page from the good book of Jojo and made the best of what was already presented and be creative on how to use the already established ability's.

Abby's mother is dead and gone. She can't be summoned. She wasn't changed from a summon into something more human.

Didn't Fang/the journal say she was?
>>
>>31033127
>Will it be the great catharsis, or the spaghetti dinner of our time?
__________Yes.

>collect strong rocks for kinetic bombardment
Collect large rocks AND Earthforge them for better aerodynamics.

If we're going to have kinetic kill vehicles, we might as well do them properly. Not just throwing around big ol' knobbly boulders like we're some sort of big dumb boring fantasy giant.

I did the math, and a maximum-size (243m^3) Hypersonic boulder has the kinetic energy of around 1kt of TNT.

If it were the world's largest iron cannonball instead, it'd be equivalent to 2.65kt of TNT.

An equivalent explosion to the latter (rather than a kinetic impact) would demolish everything (including stone fortifications) within a tenth of a mile radius, most living things and less heavy fortifications out to a .6 mile radius, and continue causing potentially fatal injuries out to a .75 mile radius.

That said, since it's a kinetic weapon as opposed to an explosive one, it's not going to impart its energy quite that efficiently. But turning an unfortunate section of Kan-Abar into a little crater has its own appeal.

Smaller munitions and Supersonic are probably more practical, but the overkill test case is still amusing to consider.
>>
>>31033649
>Didn't Fang/the journal say she was?

Err, for some reason by brain reversed that negative. You are correct. She WAS changed from a summon into something more human, which is why she can't be summoned.

I don't think the elf queen would work with Fang.

There was the other branch of the family that ran away from home though, and they're both very old archmages.

its more likely fang stole the idea from the elves, and they both completed it.

this seems very unlikely considering the great mages we know have developed their powers over the course of centuries. there is probably more going with this guy than we're aware of.
