About two to three years ago, I posted a story regarding a Neutral Good Human Wizard who had been essentially press ganged into joining a party consisting of a Drow Druid, Human Blackguard and a Tiefling Rogue/Warlock. A cursory glance should tell you why he didn't quite fit in with the group.

Due to ups and downs within the group in real life, the whole campaign became hugely protracted and I basically gave up on trying to write it all down for /tg/.

The campaign concluded a few weeks ago however, and I discovered my old notes on what was happening during the early stages. So, I decided to start scrawling it all down and make a story of it.

Where the last thread left off, the party had just combined their effort in stunning display of teamwork to cheat a bunch of bandits out of their gold through an arm-wrestling competition.

Waking up the next day, the party quickly reconvened and discussed their objectives. We were all agreed that the bandits had to go down, but our goals differed. The Tiefling wanted to make as much money as possible, and so was trying to convince us to take part in daring heist that would end with us stealing the greater part of their treasury.

The Blackguard liked this plan, but wanted to adjust it somewhat so that their would be a bigger bodycount.

The Druid... wasn't actually that keen on the whole plan, but was well aware that she needed the rest of the part to even get out of the camp alive.

And my own character, for once, actually agreed with the Blackguard, causing no end of surprise. We needed to leave as high a bodycount as possible, so as to ensure that the Bandit's couldn't maintain their control over the Shattered Plains any longer.

Holy shit, is this actually happening?

I thought that story was dead as fuck.

It didn't take us long to hatch a plan. Earlier, we saw a large amount of brandy being delivered. More importantly, as a quick check with the still magically Charmed quartermaster confirmed, it was Agandale brandy. Which has several notable qualities, the most important of which is being only slightly less flammable than oil. I'm sure most of you can see where this was going.

The next few hours were spent in reconnaissance. My Wizard once again had a friendly chat with the Bandit wizard, though this time the discussion was more focused towards the leadership of the group and it's overall goals. Simply destroying the fort wouldn't be enough if it was just a single head of hydra. Despite our shared magical background, the Bandit Wizard wasn't exactly eager to tell me the full story.

But to cut a long story short, I aced the persuade roll with a roll of 19 and he spilled the beans quite easily.

The actual head of the Bandit's was a warrior named Erento'far, who was hiding out in a nearby cave network. When I remarked on his unusual name, the mage just smiled and explained. At which point I realised just how much shit we were in.

The name wasn't unusual at all for a Green Dragon. We quickly reconvened to take this into account.

Ideally, we could loot the camp, set it aflame and be well away before the Dragon so much as poke it's head out of it's cave.

But my Wizard wasn't convinced. A teleportation spell alone could scupper that whole plan. We needed to get out as quickly as possible while chaos was still rampant, not hang around stuffing gold into our pockets.

You took your fucking time, man.

It was at this point that the Tielfing interjected, saying he'd be damned if we were leaving without enough loot to buy a house. Oddly, the Drow Druid actually agreed with me, saying that no amount of gold was worth our lives.

The Blackguard was more or less ambivalent. He wanted the money, but setting everything on fire was much more important overall.

The argument continued for a while, until the Tiefling proposed a compromise. If we couldn't loot the main treasury, then we could still loot the greatest area of concentrated, easily transported wealth. Namely, the Bandit Wizard.

My own Wizard wasn't especially happy about this, but eventually agreed.

The plan began that night. My Wizard once again charmed the Quartermaster, giving us access to the brandy. And all the other alcohol, which we quickly began sending out into the camp. Within the hour, most of the bandits were utterly slaughtered. Not in the killed sense, but in the not-able-to-walk-straight sense.

We moved fast, the blackguard throwing the brandy at the wooden palisades and fences that created the fort, along with liberal amounts near key areas.

Then as one, we made out way towards the Bandit Wizard. He'd magically warded his tent, but dispelled the ward as I approached, no doubt expecting me to be seeking refuge from the drunken party gripping the camp with another intellectual.

The DM casually explained the surprise on his face as the rogue sneak attacked him him, along with a power attack from the blackguard and my own casting of magic missile. It was over nearly instantly. The Druid, meanwhile, had calmly executed a nearby dozey guard who'd imbibed rather too much of the alcohol we'd let enter the camp proper.

Can't believe this story is restarting now.

With no distractions left, we got to looting. There were a few minor traps and locks, but the Tiefling got through them in moments. Soon enough, we had a healthy selection of scrolls and magical items.

My Wizard identified most of the scrolls, as well a Ring of Protection and Cloak of Camouflage. Other items were beyond my lore skill, and I'd already used my identify spells. We divvied up what we could now. My Wizard received a Ring of the Magi, granting him an additional 1st and 2nd level spell slot.

It was at this moment that my Wizard began to question himself once again. Murder, once a foreign concept, had become a matter of course in but a few days and his casual acceptance of the fact was somewhat disconcerting.

This soul searching was cutshort by the loud crowing of the Blackguard over his shiny new gauntlets of weapon skill, which he demonstrating by slicing the Bandit's Wizard's corpse into tiny chunks.

After stuffing the scrolls, magical items, gems and gold into out pockets, we started on phase two of our plan. This phase was rather easy. We lit a torch. Then we walked over to the eastern fence. Then, I cast Haste on the Tiefling.

And then he set the entire fucking camp ablaze, sprinting between each area that had been previously doused in brandy.

I'm pretty chuffed about it though.

Sorry for the delay, my internet sneezed at me.

Within a few minutes, the whole place was ablaze. Bandits crawled all over it, but a combination of drunkenness and decapitated leadership made any effective response effectively impossible.

It was at this point that we discovered a slight flaw to our plan. The actual gate guard were actually somewhat disciplined, and refused to let use simply flee the camp. They were quite insistent that we instead join the ramshackle bucket brigade.

Fortunately, the Blackguard had an effective solution ot this problem, in the form of a power attack. The remaining two guards rallied quickly, one running for the alarm bell. This might have been a threat, if one of the scrolls my Wizard had picked up hadn't been Hold Person. As it was the guard froze in place, getting to watch his companion get mauled by a bear.

With that, we were back on the open road.

Behind us, the flame's grew higher and higher as they consumed ever more of the fort. And we were, more or less, home-free. Except that the party had widely ranged ideas of where 'home' was and even more disparate ideas about how they were planning on getting there.

It says something about the cohesiveness of a party that even the threat of a low level dragon encounter isn't enough to stop them from arguing about where they're going next.

Eventually, we settled on Arintile. My Wizard had a friend there, who could hopefully get in contact with the Mage's Guild and convince them that he had not, in fact, been a part of the riots that had swept his home city. For the Druid and Tiefling, the river boats that frequented the city provided a relatively safe mode of transportation. And the Blackguard simply didn't care, as long as there was a decent chance of a fight along the way.

>This whole story

Can't believe I missed this.

And so we trotted off, a burning fort and countless dead behind us. I say trotted, but I actually mean sprinted, as we were well aware that the fort wouldn't be on fire forever. And indeed, by daybreak, all that was left of the fort was a few thin trails of smoke reaching into the sky. And bandits. Lots and lots of bandits who, now homeless, were buzzing through the forest in search of something or someone to take bloody vengeance on.

We had a decent headstart on them though, and so were fairly confident we could make it to a more civilized area of the Shattered Plains before they caught up to us, especially since we'd crippled any magical advantage they might have had.

It was about midday that we first spotted the green dragon in the sky, and the party's confidence in it's ability to remain alive for the foreseeable future dropped sharply.

It was also at that exact point that that session came to an end.

>>31028257

And so ends the third session of the Only Sane Man and his band of thieves, racists and murderers.

I just finished reading the two archived threads and this one.
OP tells a good story pretty well, your writing is funny and flows nicely.

I hope you all play again soon because I'd love to read more of this.
Thanks dude!

We've actually finished with this campaign, though I've got a lot of updates between the end and now.
