You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed.

When you recovered, you found yourself in an unprecedented world, a backwards world living in fear of the demons you very nearly triumphed against. And in their willful ignorance, they have turned against their guardians so as to hide from the demons of the world. They have turned on people who, willingly or not, have given their entire lives and the lives of their children over to fighting the endless war.

This Mr. Blackhorn sees himself as a strong man, and he just beat a woman for having the gall to attend the same worship as him. But he is weak, pathetic. His muscles come from when he worked the fields and have grown fatty since he retired. His ego is derived from the illusions he’s cast upon those around him. And he’s looking down on you, seeing you only as an old man. If he were to go to the front line, he’d get himself and everyone around him killed.

The demi-human’s child is still tugging at your robe, hoping for you to do something. Isabella is looking to you to do something.

He needs to be disciplined.

>On a scale of 1-10, how strictly will you discipline him?

Due to the large quantity of food you have finished digesting, you estimate that you are back to about 1% total power. You can feel the demon inside you starting to wake up, you'll be able to fix your binding with it soon.

A small reminder of who you are, you are a child soldier that has been on the battlefield for eighty years, constantly. You had nearly a hundred brothers and sisters, but watched almost all of them die due to your own lack of power. You lived in hell, and only found a path out when you met Lauren, and now you've been dragged here.

“You going to do something elf? Going to stick up for the.” Whatever slur he was about to spit about her is cut off as you grab his face. He grabs your arm and starts trying to pull free, but you just grip tighter till his face starts swelling red. You lift him off the ground and he starts kicking wildly, fear deep in his eyes.

One of his friends steps up to help him, about to throw a punch at you. A swift strike to his trachea with your offhand drops him to the ground. The people around you shout and jump back as the man starts convulsing to fill his lungs. “Joshua, what are you doing?” Isabella shouts.

Your sneer passes from Blackhorn to her. “This man is scum,” you state as you crack his skull. He’s screaming in pain into the palm of your hand, clawing at you with his nails. You look back at the pathetic man and decide to finish it.

You lift him higher into the air and take a step closer towards the wooden pews. The onlookers shout out in fear as you throw him through the air like a doll and smash him through the pew, shattering the weak wood. He crumples and doesn’t move, you likely broke his back. Six months rehab if he can afford it, if they even have medical science. This could be lethal if they don’t know how to treat it.

It wasn’t even half the punishment you’d give a soldier in the field for that kind of behavior. He got off easy.

You scratch at the stubble on your chin as you ponder that, and turn back to those around you. The man with the broken trachea is crawling away from you, Mother Margery fainted, half of the villagers are running for the nearest door while the other half are frozen in place, Isabella is speechless, and the demi-human is aghast.

If people by now don't know how powerful we are then I don't even know. It has been well established that we could take on entire armies by ourself.
Also, it doesn't really establish how strong we are. We are only at 1% of our power, soon enough we will be several magnitudes more powerful than we are at the moment.

It didn't turn out that bad, though

Civilians just don’t understand.

Without bothering to meet anyone’s gaze, you turn and walk out of the temple. The child who was tugging on your robes had been pulled away by his mother, but he’s trying to squirm out to run over to you. “Thank you Mr. Elf!” the wolf kid shouts despite his mother’s efforts.

“Stop that Lucian, stay quiet,” his mother urges as she tries to cover her mouth.

“But mom, he helped us! He understands that it’s not fair that they treat us like this. We didn’t do nothing to them and they beat you for it!” Lucian says as you slow your pace just a bit.

“It’s not our place to bother an elf, you know that,” she tells the child before looking to you. “Thank you Sir, for bothering to help someone like me,” she mumbles, glancing away.

You stop and appraise the woman, appraising her physical capabilities and wolf like mutations. “What do you mean someone like me? You are human, in fact you’re better and stronger than anyone else here. You need to stand up for yourself.”

Her eyes drop to the side and her stature slumps. “I’m flattered, but I’m just a demi-human. My husband tried to fight this, and it got him killed. It may be a rough life, but I’m not going to leave my son alone.”

“Something needs to be done about this. But why do you keep calling me an elf?” you ask.

Both of them stare at you in surprise. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, why do you say that I’m an elf?”

“Because you are one? Scent is a bit of a specialty of ours. We can smell your agelessness,” she answers carefully. Her back is all the way against the wall of the temple and her tail is between her legs. The agelessness shouldn’t have made it to civilian populations, and certainly wouldn’t have in this kind of technology starved country. But if demi-humans can reproduce, they may have been able to pass it down as well.

Your brothers and sisters might have survived, gotten out of the war. They could still be out there somewhere, waiting for you. “Where are they?”

“In the capital, mostly? Are you not from Lyr? What’s going on?” she asks, pushing her child behind her leg.

>>31020243
you should look up
captain obvious and captain hindsight
>>
>>31020266
GRD Fungus, the colony is inside your body at the moment and responsible for the majority of your regeneration. It had nearly no ego to it, so binding it was simple and the first step.
A Magpie was next. Overpowering an animal like demon was much needed practice before attempting a humanoid demon. The magpie, being a carrion devourer, gave you your gut, immunity to most poisons and the ability to fuel your body.
The marauder Akab was third, a humanoid demon that gave you your heightened strength and durability, far exceeding what a normal human is capable of. Came with a bit of a temper issue though.
A doppelganger was tracked down and binded to you soon after, giving you immunity to most mind altering affects, and mellowing out the personality shift from the marauder. Teh ability to create illusions didn't carry over well though.
Then you made a deal with a vampire, and earned your agelessness, near instantaneous reactions speed, heightened senses, and limited "bad" mind control.
Finally, you ripped power from the Dragon, boosting every other attribute you had, and letting you see and sometimes alter souls.

And or course, each demon cranked up all of your human attributes at the same time.

This is merely preliminary notes though, subject to change, and elaboration.
>>
>>31020421
So what exactly is a demon in this setting? What makes a demon a demon?

“Wrong. Your kind were not slaves, they were warriors. Humans have nothing to do with the fucking Dragon. The Dragon is nothing more than a big fucking sack of souls held together by the biggest prick ego you’ll ever meet in the entire fucking world. I should know, I’ve met the bastard. The only difference between him and a big ass fucking Alpha demon is that he’s arrogant enough to think he should be on our side of this bloody war,” you explain.

The entire hall is aghast and silent. You continue. “We were fighting a war we were losing, we needed better soldiers. Eventually, they settled on you, cursing you from birth to grow fast, burn bright, and fight to death lest you die at the stroke of forty. And all of mankind owes each and every one of you their deepest gratitude, not their fucking scorn. I don’t care if you’re naught but a reminder of a war lost, this is unacceptable.”

“This is heresy!” Isabella shouts as loud as she can. “Get out of my temple you heathen!”

You scowl at her and turn back to the demi-human. “You could come with me you know,” you comment before walking out of the temple.

Life in the village seems uninterrupted, an unending stasis of poverty. It’s disgusting. But on the horizon you can see the capital of Lyr, there will be answers there.

You start walking out of the village. You glance back and see the villagers from the temple running back to their homes, but the demi-human doesn’t follow you. You slip between a few buildings and drop off the main road before anyone can return with weapons. It wouldn’t do them any good against you of course, but it would be cruel to injure so many.

The village is small, nothing more than a stop on the way to the capital for boats it seems. A few farms surround the area and you can see these great six legged beasts being used as oxen. You presume them to be the Lasttier that Francis spoke of. You’re a bit happy that initiatives to domesticate some of the lesser demons succeeded, their biological structures can clearly be of great use.

But not all demons are safe, no matter their appearance.

You find a light collection of woods on the edge of the farms, the trees are thin and twisted, but surely home to some creatures. With no currency of any form, you guess that the best way to sate your hunger will be hunting.

The canopy of the forest is thin, but conceals enough to cool the temperature of the forest somewhat. And there are enough bushes that the wind can’t easily wipe away scents. You make sure to keep track of the capital’s location as you venture deeper and deeper into the wilderness. Your stomach is growling by the time the sun begins to set, and you have yet to find anything worth hunting. But the foul creatures love the night. You start finding claw marks along the exposed roots of trees.

A familiar dung pile gives you the final clue. There’s a horse like creature nearby, probably a mating pair. When the Dragon first appeared, they were almost non-existent, but the marauder’s bred them till they were bigger, stronger, and meaner than anything else you could ride into combat. Teeth and claws strong enough to shred through an APV, and strong enough to carry two of the black bastards with them.

Drago.

Drago are simple beasts, bred for obedience to their masters. Straight forward and simple minded, easy to kill if you’re prepared for them. Their danger lies in the charge, where thick hide and bone lets them survive barrages easily. All it takes to bring one down is a strike from behind to cripple their legs and then you can execute them at leisure.

Course, if they’re hunting you directly, it’s unlikely you’ll get that strike.

The drago don’t know you’re here though, they’re little more than forest predators, hunting the less dangerous animals. You follow the trail through the forest as they hunt down a bull-horn sow. Their chase takes them through the bottom of a steep ravine where they quickly overtake the fat creature and rip it apart with their claws.

Their blood lust distracted them however, and let you casually walk up to the edge of the ravine. You could take them down with your bare hands, but weapons are faster. Your sword should be strapped to your back, but it was lost in the time span you can’t remember. If you had even a standard issue Beowulf, this would be child’s play. All you have on hand is a moss covered boulder half a meter across. It will good enough.

You heft it up on your shoulder’s, tearing it free from the soil, and look back to the drago below you. The marauders use a simple, hoarse hoot to call their mounts to them. The exact mechanism is unknown, but it doesn’t mean you never learned how to do it.

When you call them over to you, one of them snatches up the sow in its jaw and carries it towards you, oblivious of your actual threat. Just as they pass beneath you, they catch your scent and jump back in fear, but it’s too late. The boulder flies from your grasp and catches the female drago in the hip, shattering the bone. They both bellow out in rage and fear as you jump down atop them. You swiftly twist your entire body into a single strike, right below the jaw bone of the female.

1/2
>>
You precisely hit the nerve bundle controlling the lower jaw and paralyze the demon, but her mate is still free. The creature opposite you stands nearly three meters tall at the shoulder, and its eyes shine red in the night. Its long, whip like tail is lashing back and forth, digging into the ravine walls on either side as it faces you down, scared but furious.

The beast snorts, its heavy breath fogging up in the air. You only have a moment to change your footing before it bolts forward. You try to dodge around its skull to get to the delicate belly muscles, but you’re just a bit too slow. Your body aching from overexertion already, you just haven’t recovered enough. When you try to roll past it’s attack, it digs its snout straight into the dirt, dragging through and ripping it all up.

The horn on its muzzle catches you in the shoulder and flips you off the ground. You tumble in the air and slam against the ravine wall. The soft soil lessens the impact, but your ears pick something up, you’re certain that you just heard the sound of an empty metal chamber. There’s something just a bit beneath the surface here.

Whatever is hidden beneath the trees will remain hidden though, the drago is still after you. You’re still prying yourself from the muddy pit your body formed when it leaps up against the ravine wall to roar at you and try to snap down on your head, but you grab hold of its muzzle and fend it off. Blobs of saliva splatter against you as you hold the beast off.

The mud encasing you in the ravine is thick and tries to pull you back in as you pry your limbs free. It’s been a long time since you’ve smelled a natural forest though. The mucky detritus is refreshing, rather than ash, sulfur, and death, that so much of the battlefield was. The drago is shoveling clumps of dirt back with every push, but can’t get enough traction to overcome your strength.

By the time its hind claws start scraping steel, you have your knee free. You rip its head down onto your knee, cracking the jawbone and probably damaging the tendons on your knee cap, but the confused creature is easily thrown back and you jump out of the mud to face the beast.

You only have a few moments before the female regains muscle control, you’ll have to kill the male quickly. If only you had a weapon.

The beast is enraged, but far from intelligent. The lucky hit it got on you has made it too confident. You widen your stance and prepare for it to charge, making sure to feign the same action that failed before. When it digs its armored snout into the ground again, you dodge the other way. The frantic beast bucks and tries to jump away from you, but is too large.

You slip beneath it as it lands and catch its short ribs with your elbow. The beast bellows as you feel the bone crack and slice into its muscles from within. The only thing it can do to you as it tries to run away is lash at you with its tail. You simply catch the serrated tip in your hand as it blindly tries to hit you. A quick jerk and you sweep one of its hind legs off the ground and topple it over.

Something breaks it the tail as the drago falls on it, and the tension fails. As its hind legs claw at you, you slide in with the tail and stab it directly into its diaphragm with its own tail. One more swipe and all of its lower organs are falling out around you. The mess of blood and organs washes across the ground in an all too familiar scent.

The male will die soon enough. Not a clean death, but it’s just a demon. It deserves little more than the messy death of a predator. You need a weapon though, and the keratin based blades along the tip of the tail are sharp enough. As you walk over the back of the beast, you use the tail to cut itself off, severing it between two of the bones easily.

When you look back to the female though, you see that it has already gotten back to its feet. The hip that you struck is hiked up against its side, but it is still able to move with three legs. Rather than enraged at the disembowelment of its mate though, it is sniffing the air constantly. Then you see what else is here, the child Lucian from the village.

The brat is standing up to the drago as if it were a normal beast. Watching you fight it must have inflated his ego or something, because he thinks the small sword he’s brought will be enough to protect him. The female drago assesses him, and you know the look. It can’t fight you, so it will kill elsewhere. “Get back from it!” you shout as you sprint after the drago.

The kid may be a demi-human but he’s too young. Probably only about four or five years old, the very beginnings of puberty for him. The drago lunges at him and he stands his ground. He would have been swallowed whole, but you leap upon the back of the demon and bury the improvised blade into its neck.

The demon screeches and twists its attack off as it tries to throw you free, but when the blade comes free, you merely grab hold of the wound with your other hand and stab anew. The beast falters and collapses to one side when you finally nick the spinal column. Before it can get back up again, you grab either side of the wound and start tearing it open till your nails tear off and you can see its spine.

1/2
>>
When you separate bone nerve from bone, the demon finally falls still, though you can still see its eye moving about quickly, and its heart still beats. You breathe a sigh of relief and free yourself of the bloody ordeal.

Then Lucian charges forward with the sword and plunges it through the drago’s eye. Blood squirts all over him as he twists it around and jumps back, waiting for the thing to move again. You can’t help but laugh a bit before the male roars into the night, a death cry that you’re sure every demon in the area will hear.

You’ll have to do something about the demi-human, even if he’s smiling like an idiot, as if he actually helped you.

I kinda didn't even consider using the thing. I just figured that having a kid who is strongheaded enough to come out and fight a goddamn horse dragon would likely end up using it to stab a random farmer who is being racist at that particular moment.

And that'd be bad.

“What are you doing here kid?” you ask as you wipe the blood from your body. It seems you’ve broken most of the muscles in your arms, that may take a while to heal, and you have no fingernails left. Other than that though, you’re in good health.

“I want to go with you! I’m tired of the village. It’s terrible and everyone’s mean there!” Lucian announces. Something stomps deep in the forest, breaking through a tree. The death of the male drago must have brought friends.

“This is the stupidest place you could have followed me to.”

“Well you said we could come with you, and this is where you went.”

“It didn’t seem like you were going to join me. Does your mother know you’re here?”

“Of course not, she would’ve kept me home forever. I had to steal Dad’s sword and chase after you all on my own. And I did it! I was even helpful when the monsters attacked. So please let me come with you,” he says, making his eyes as endearing as a child can.

“You have no idea how much danger you’re in right now. I can’t even send you home or you’ll get killed, so go get some firewood and start a fire, unless you want to go hungry tonight. And don’t stray too far or I won’t be able to save you,” you order as he happily runs off into the woods.

You shake your head and turn your attention to the female drago. The meat will be tough, but there is a hell of a lot of meat to be consumed. You cut flanks of meat off and eat it bit by bit, not bothering to wait for the fire, but you know that Lucian won’t be able to stomach it raw. The kid returns with an armful of branches and dumps them next to the corpse with a grin on his face. He quickly sets about trying to turn them into a fire, but has little success as you continue to eat your fill.

“You’re doing that wrong,” you say as you walk over to him. “You don’t start a fire just by gathering wood and grinding them against each other,” you explain as you sift through the pile of junk he brought over. Half the branches are soaked in mud, others are too large to ignite, he has almost no tinder, and what remains will only last a few minutes.

You sigh and take one of the larger logs, and walk back to the drago. “Here’s something that you won’t see very often, drago blood is actually very flammable if you can get even the slightest bit of water out of it,” you explain as you kneel down next to the kill. The corpse is still warm and leaking blood, so you quickly fill your mouth with the sludge. Lucian only watches in wonder as you work the sludge back and forth, eventually squirting most of the water out from between your teeth and then spitting the sludge onto the wood. “Give me the sword,” you say as you walk back over to him. “I’m not going to steal it,” you reassure him as he hugs it to his chest.

“This was my father’s, I can’t lose it, since it’s all we have left from him,” Lucian explains as he hesitantly hands it over.

“He was a warrior then?” you ask as you strip a dry branch down to a point.

“He fought for Lyr against the empire, before we were conquered. And then afterwards he would protest against how badly we’re treated. That’s what Mom says anyways,” the kid explains as you give the branch a few quick spins and light the blood on fire. The odor is foul the flames clear, but in a bind it’s almost as good an accelerant as gasoline. “That’s amazing.”

>>
“So your dad died before you were old enough to know him?” you ask, and Lucian nods. The two of you sit in silence for a moment as you light more of the branches on fire till you have a proper cooking fire for demon meat. “Well, get cooking, the fire won’t last forever. I’ll get more wood,” you say as you take a burning log and start heading down the ravine.

You’re not actually looking for firewood though, you’re looking for the claw marks that the drago left. When you find the deep ruts, you bring the fire close and start clearing it off. Just a bit deeper through the mud you find what is unmistakably concrete. Judging by the curve of the ravine, the steepness of the walls, you seem to be in a collapsed tunnel. And when you raise the fire up higher, you see what seems to be the edge of a door, buried in the mud.

One of those votes (>>31021000) is me. Also the poster of (>>31023500). If you look at the votes, it says DEMONS right there. You are an idiot.
>>
You make a note to yourself to check that later, rip a branch from a nearby tree and return to Lucian and the fire. “So, what are you going to do when you get to the capital?”

“Don’t know, I’ll figure it out when I get there,” you say as you sit down against the drago corpse.

“Are you going to beat up all the bad people?”

“Don’t know”

“You’re going to let me come with you, right?”

“No, you’re going back to your mother as soon as I can get you out through the demons.”

“Are you going to sleep?”

“Something like that, now please leave me alone for a second,” you say as you close your eyes and try to concentrate.

“Well that’s okay.” Your eyes snap back open. “I’ll watch the fire and make sure no demon gets anywhere near us.”

“Demons won’t approach me unless they are in large numbers. And I’ll wake up if there are that many. Just eat your food, and let me concentrate,” you say, and thankfully he stays quiet.

You shut out the noise from all around you and focus on your mind, slowly expanding your awareness till it encompasses your soul in full, and then you reach out through your contracts to find the fungus living inside you. A black, vile thing that found a way to live symbiotically with you, drinking your blood and filtering from your lymph in exchange for regenerating your injuries. It was a simple demon, not even fully alive when you bound it to your soul, just something to learn the process with, but you have since found it to be indispensable.

And the binding went both ways, spilling some of your power over to it. “So you’ve woken, have you Contractor?” GRD asks, a whispering along the threads connecting your souls.

“It’s been a long time it seems, but I have awoken again. And it seems that my demons are trying to back out on their contracts.”

“Demons? Trying to get out of forced contracts? Well that’s just unimaginable, now isn’t it?”

>>
“Cut the shit, your body and soul are mine. Stop withholding my power.”

“Now, why should I?” it asks.

“Because I will force it upon you.”

“That could backfire you know. Wouldn’t it be better to just give me what I want?”

“What could an infection like you possibly want?”

“Shut your mouth human. You have no idea how long I was trapped in there with you. How much work I had to do to stitch you back together. It was way beyond anything you ever imagined, and I did it without complaint. I deserve my price, and I want food.”

“I’ve given you food, I’m eating as much as I can.”

“Not that kind of food, something better tasting, with a stronger soul. Those are my terms,” GRD states before forcibly pulling away from you.

“What’s this thing that appeared on your chest? Aw, it’s gone,” Lucian states as he pokes your chest, right where your seal would have appeared.

Probably safer to wait a little while; either we come upon something else appropriate that satisfies his soul-tooth, or we build up a bit more of our power so as to lessen any potential negative consequences when we force the issue later on.
>>
>>31025351
Nah, we can wait.
>>
You shake your head and clear the fungal stench from your mind. “Just ignore that, it’s none of your business kid,” you say as you push him away and adjust your sleeping position. “Did you eat your fill? There’s plenty of meat?”

“That meat was terrible,” the kid says stubbornly as he slides back to the other side of the fire.

“I never said it was good. You shouldn’t even be here. Feel lucky you got any food at all,” you grumble as you turn over on to your side to get some sleep.

Then you feel a vibration through the ground. Your senses jump to full alert and you wait. Foot steps. A few dozen, quadrupeds, slow moving, must be a pack of something. “Do you smell that?” Lucian asks as he holds his nose up to the air. You take a sniff of the air as well. Scavenger Wolves, attracted by death, and usually led by something much bigger.

And then you can hear someone shouting in the woods, someone crying out for Lucian. The kid’s ears drop down and he practically shrinks as he looks in the direction of his mother. Both of them are in great danger.

You jump to your feet and grab Lucian by the scruff of his clothes. The kid only weighs about forty kilos, if that, and you easily carry him off towards the door you found earlier. “What’s going on?” he demands as you run along the ravine wall till you find the rusting edge. “What are you doing?”

“Demons are coming kid, it’s not safe for you. And I’m borrowing the sword,” you explain as you dig your fingers through the mud and grab hold of the door. You plant your foot in the mud and pull, forcing the door through several feet of the mud till it finally opens. You thank luck that it wasn’t bolted shut.

“No, no, stop! We can fight them together!” Lucian protests as you peer into the darkness. Nothing seems to be moving, so it’s safer than out here.

“You’ll only be in my way. In this state, this is the only way I can protect you,” you explain as you rip the sword from his scrawny arms and toss him inside. You slam the door shut behind him and step back as the pack spreads around you. You quickly pull the sheath off of the blade and discard it.

Six wolves are surrounding you, ready to fight for the corpses. You test the blade in your hand to acquaint yourself with its weight. It’s thick and broad bladed, and the counterweight in the pommel is broken, so it feel like you’re swinging a club around, but it feels light as a feather regardless. Single edged design, so backswings won’t be an option. Age and use seems to have filled the thing with cracks, it probably won’t survive the fight.

1/2
>>
But then the wolves back off. Something bigger and heavier is lumbering towards you through the woods. When you see the mossy bulk, the unhealthy and twisted forest makes sense. A Spore Sower had gotten past the Annhilation Wall. The tortoise like creature is even larger than the drago, it would have lost the territory if it was unable to fend them off.

“I smell an elf,” the creature hisses at you as he straddles over the ravine. Bulging fruiting bodies hang off the top of its carapace, sprinkling spores with every step. It must have infected the entire pack of wolves, and now uses them as puppets. These things were only terribly dangerous when they could control trained soldiers with heavy weapons. If it’s just animals, they stand no chance.

Lucian’s mother screams from the far end of the ravine, catching the attention of the wolves.
