Water

Many years ago, the world was a very different place. Humans lived on the backs of great creatures known as Lion Turtles, and only left them to search for food. Back then, the world beyond the backs of the Lion Turtles was known as the Spirit Wilds, and was home to many great beasts and mighty spirits. The Lion Turtles gifted man with the power to control the elements in order to protect themselves in the wilds. Some Lion Turtles held power over fire, some over water, some over air, and some over earth. Eventually, a man named Wan accomplished something incredible, mastering all four elements with the aid of a spirit named Raava. Wan and Raava joined forces to face a dark spirit known as Vaatu, and eventually merged their spirits into one, becoming the first Avatar. Wan locked Vaatu away, and decided that humans and spirits should be separated. Most of the spirits left the world of man, and humanity finally left the safety of the Lion Turtles. They would face many challenges.

With humanity now inhabiting the Spirit Wilds, three kingdoms emerged. As they grew in strength, they soon turned on one another. Avatar Wan tried desperately to prevent war, but failed, perishing in its first battle. A new Avatar was born, and, like Wan, he managed to truly master the elements. Using his incredible power, he was eventually able to put a stop to the war. He passed away soon after. It has been sixteen years since the death of the Avatar, and the world still faces many problems. The Lion Turtles only gave the gift of bending to a few humans when they departed into the wilds, and even those humans had no real control over their powers, only able to wield them in their most raw forms. Firebenders could only hurl flames with no real control, Water benders could only push and pull water. Air benders could only use their bending for leaps and gusts of wind. Earth benders could only move rocks. The Avatar was the only known bender to truly master the elements, wielding them as an extension of himself. How the Avatars managed to master the elements in such a way, nobody knows. In addition, bending in general has become more rare over time, with fewer benders being born each generation and many of them dying. The world is still largely unexplored, and worst of all, many believe the three kingdoms will soon go to war once again.

>Welcome to Avatar Quest. Here are the rules.

Decisions are made by vote. Each vote has a ten minute interval, after which, the option that receives the most votes it the one that is chosen.

There are no write-ins unless explicitly stated

Some options require rolls. In that event, rolls will be out of 100. Whether rolls succeed or fail is decided by best out of the first three rolls.

Any roll of four or lower in the first three automatically means whatever you are attempting goes poorly.

Any roll of ninety six or higher in the first five rolls automatically means that whatever you are attempting goes very well, UNLESS a four or lower was rolled in the first three.

All decisions are final. If you regret voting for something, too bad. Think carefully before you make decisions.

Try to keep waifu bullshit to a minimum.

Hǎibīn Chéngshì is a coastal city in the Southern Kingdom. Home to over a thousand people, it is the second largest city in the kingdom, surpassed only by its capital; Shén Chéngshì.

Your city is the main source of fish in your kingdom, as well as the only port for trade with the other two kingdoms. As such, it is considered extremely important, and so the royal army has a significant presence here. Your father is a fisherman, and your mother is part of the royal army. With each of them having important jobs, you've been well taken care of your whole life. At sixteen years of age, you will soon need to decide what exactly you want to do with your life. Your mother things you would make a fine soldier. Your father, on the other hand, doesn't want to wish away peace, and instead suggests that you follow in his footsteps and become a fisherman. You could do well at either of these jobs, especially with your abilities.

You are a water bender.

This is considered odd, as neither of your parents are benders, and bending is uncommon even among the children of benders. Many people have been watching you with interest your whole life, wondering what you will do with your gift.

Today is a beautiful day; not a cloud in the sky, the sun shining bright, a nice breeze keeping it from being sweltering. Your parents are working, so you have the day to do as you please!

>A. Go to the docks, see if you can find your dad.

>B. Go to the watchtower; your mother is stationed there.

>C. Go explore the woods outside the city

You leave the safety of your city, and enter the vast forest just outside its borders. A trail winds through the woods, connecting your city with the various small villages throughout the kingdom, as well as the capital. You don't follow the trail, you go deep into the trees. The woods are truly beautiful; mighty trees stretch to the sky, the melodic sounds of animals fill your ears.

There is much you can do here. There is a lake not far from where you are. You could have fun playing with your water bending, there. You also remember seeing a cave the last time you were here, that could be fun to explore. You could just wander, and see if you find anything interesting. Of course, you could simply return to your city.

Hiking through the woods, you make your way to the lake. It is large and murky, and many of the children in your city tell stories of monsters lurking beneath the surface here. You've never seen any sort of monster here, and you've come to this place more often than most. The water moves gently here, rising onto the shore and reseeding. You see the occasional jump of a small fish in the distance, or a bird flying overhead. The breeze softly caresses your skin, and you take a deep breath of the fresh air. You could bend the water, making the push and pull of the water at the shore stronger. You could go for a swim and get a bit of exercise. Or, you could simply sit by the lake and relax in this tranquil place.

As you often have in your past visits to this lake, you bend the water. Extending your hands outward, you push a portion of the water back. Making a pulling motion, you bring it back towards you. You continue the motion; back and forth, push and pull. As you continue this, you notice the current that you are creating is growing stronger. You wonder how strong you can make it. A splash in your current tells you that you've trapped a fish in the water you are bending. Perhaps you could bring it to shore with your bending. Of course, you could try something new entirely. You can make simple currents, why not larger ones? The waves of the ocean move to shore and recede, not unlike in this lake. Perhaps you could create a small wave of your own.

Guys I for one am interested and intrigued by this new system.

Also for anyone confused 2 rolls out of the first 3 have to pass, instead of just 1. In this case we got one roll that passed, the 93, but we needed another roll above 75, which we didn't get.

Wanting to see if you can create a wave, you throw your hands high into the air, trying to bring the water up with them. The water responds, rising a bit, but not as a wave, move as a blob that breaks apart almost immediately, splashing you and letting the fish get away. You failed to make a wave, but, still, you did something different. You could try again, doing things differently could yield better results. You could try to simply make a strong current, or, you could try to catch another fish.

Honestly, that system looks pretty bad in my honest opinion, it lessens the chance to succeed even more from what I'm used to in other threads, you are usually happy just to get one 70, but two seems a little pushing it for roll difficulty.

Dropping not because of the 93 being ignored, dropping because this protag is going to be a crack bitch with this system.

Well, we can compensate for that with lower DC's. In a normal system with DC 70 and best of first 3 we have about 66% success chance. Here that's a lot lower, so a DC 70 in those quests would be around 50 here.

You try to make a wave once again. This time, you pull your arms back hard, then push forward as hard as you can. This causes a strong current to begin moving towards you then suddenly change direction hard, creating a splash in the water. A fish is sent several feet into the air before splashing back into the lake. Should you try again? Should you go after that fish? Or should you try to make stronger currents?

You give it one more try. Taking a deep breath, you extend your hands towards the water, then pull, then push, then pull. You make a current, allowing it to grow stronger, and stronger. You give one final push, then you pull, aiming your fingers towards the ground and slowly raising your hands.

A wave finally rises, but it's not exactly small like you expected. The massive body of water towers high above you, and stretches several feet to your left and right. You give a push, sending your palms outward and arms forward. The wave responds, falling towards the center of the lake with a mighty crash that causes several birds in nearby trees to flee in fear.

You stare out at the lake, amazed by what you just did.

Still amazed by what you've done, you do the only logical thing and attempt to create a massive wave like that a second time. Once again, you extend your hands towards the water. You push and pull, again and again, creating a powerful current. You push one last time, then pull, aiming your fingers at the ground and raising your hands slowly. The water rises once more into a mighty wave more than twice your size. With a strong push, you send it to the center of the lake once again, the sound of its crash once more echoing through the forest.

You breathe heavily, that impressive display of water bending having taken a lot out of you. You don't think you've heard of many people being able to do what you just did. There have been few who have mastered water bending, most can simply create currents like you did earlier.

The sound of a twig snapping behind you pulls you from your thoughts. You turn to see a beast approaching you. It's hairy body is supported by four legs, ending in paws. A tail hangs from its back end, and its face is a pair of eyes and a long, narrow snout. Its mouth is filled with countless razor sharp teeth.

A Crocodile Wolf.

You've heard of these. A lot of them roam the forests, living in caves relatively close to bodies of water, where they go to catch fish, their favorite food. Of course, you've also heard that they find humans just fine to eat as well.

You consider your options. Trying to outrun it would be suicide; they are extremely quick. Fighting it head on would be equally stupid. You could try swimming into the lake and pray that it can't follow. Or, you could wade into the water and use your bending to face the creature.

Fleeing or fighting head on would be suicide. And you're not sure swimming away will make you safe, either. That leaves you with one option, and you're suddenly very glad you pushed yourself to make your bending more powerful. You slowly move backwards into the water, not stopping until it is up to your waste. The creature begins to step towards you, following you into the water.

What to do? You could control the current under its feet and knock it off balance. Or, you could create a wave to knock it back. You could likely defeat the creature with one attack if you created another of those huge waves. You're tired, but you should still be able to make at least one more.

>A. Move the currents beneath its feet (two rolls of 20 or higher)

You want to end this fight quickly; less time for mistakes and less time for you to run out of energy. You push and pull the water in front of you, building the strength of the current. The Crocodile Wolf does not seem to care, and steps towards you. You panic, and try to raise the water too quickly, resulting in nothing more than a large splash. This distracts the beast for a few seconds.

You have one chance to salvage this fight.

You try creating a wave once again, desperately moving the current and trying to rise it into a wave. In your desperation, you mess up once more, and the wave becomes nothing more than a splash. The creature, now seeming aware that the splash isn't a threat, finally attacks.

It leaps at you, knocking you onto your back and sending your head under water. The creature could easily drown you, but that doesn't seem to be what it wants to do. Its massive jaws close around your left arm, and it begins to shake you around violently. Horrific pain shoots through you as you feel your arm become dislocated. If you don't do something now, you are going to lose that arm and probably die.

You kick the creature in the face as hard as you possibly can, over and over, jamming your foot into its face with every ounce of strength that you can muster. You refuse to be held, you refuse to die like this, and soon enough, the creature releases you.

You fall back into the water as the creature takes a few steps back. You push yourself to a sitting position with your good arm and watch the creature shake its head. You have only a few seconds before it attacks again, and you'd rather not lose an arm to this thing. Your water bending is limited with only one arm, and fighting it physically is even less likely to succeed than before.

>A. Create a strong current beneath it and knock it off balance (two rolls of 25 or higher)

You push and pull the water in front of you, creating as strong a current as you can. You push and pull, push and pull. You give one final push, and shoot across the lake at amazing speed, stopping near its center. You float along, and in the distance, you see the Crocodile Wolf leave. You should be safe now. You feel exhausted, and are glad that you no longer need to fight.

Seeing no sense in remaining in the middle of the lake like this, you create another current to travel with. It's harder than it should be, but with a messed up arm and you being exhausted, it's understandable. The going is slow, but eventually you do make it back to shore. You're tired, wet, your left arm is a mess, and you have no idea where that Crocodile Wolf went. The situation is not ideal. Still, you're alive. At least, for now you are. Of course, that could change quickly depending on your next move.

You creep quietly through the woods, ignoring the pain in your arm and the crippling exhaustion as you move towards home. You do everything you can to keep from being noticed; you move silently, you take special care to avoid stepping on any twigs or tripping, and you keep your eyes peeled to make sure that you aren't being followed. It takes some time, but you make it home as the sun begins to set. You move through the city, ignoring the stares of the people you pass.

You walk through your front door and collapse on the floor, everything going black.

You wake up in your bed, your parents standing over you, smiling in relief upon seeing you wake up.

Your father is a skinny man with well kept black hair, and a clean shaven face. His eyes are a dark blue, unlike your mother, who has brown eyes. Her hair color matches them, and it goes down to her shoulders. She has a nasty cut on her right cheek, a scar from her time in the war.

"Thank goodness you're alright," your father tells you, giving you a hug. "We were worried sick about you."

"What the hell happened to you?" your mother asks. "I've seen corpses that looked less messed up than you did when you walked through the door."

You lie to them, telling them that you fell down some stairs. The looks on their faces tell you that they don't believe you for a second, and the look on your mother's face tells you that she is not amused.

"Fell down some stairs, did you?" she asks. "So, exactly how stupid do you think we are?"

She grabs you by your left arm and points to the various bite marks covering it. "Last time I checked, this is not the type of injury you get from falling down some stairs. I'm also pretty sure you wouldn't come home soaked after falling down some stairs. But hey, what do I know? I mean, clearly I'm an idiot, right? I guess next time you 'fall down some stairs', I won't waist my time doing pointless things like treating your wounds so that they don't get infected, or changing you out of your wet clothes so you don't get hypothermia. Because, I mean, you only fell down some stairs, and clearly, if I'm too stupid to tell that, I surely can't be trusted to take care of you."

You tell your mother that you're sorry.

She nods, "Good. Now, what really happened?"

You tell her about how you went into the woods and decided to visit the lake. You describe the incredible water bending you did, and your encounter with the Crocodile Wolf, detailing pretty much everything that happened during the fight.

Your father places a hand on your shoulder. "I'm glad you're safe, son. And I'm very proud of you as well; not many people could do what you claim to have done."

Your mother nods, giving you a proud smile. "I always knew you were special. Not bad at all; you fought a Crocodile Wolf for the first time, alone, with no weapons, and you still made it out alive, and using water bending to escape, no less. Of course, I want to see your bending for myself to make sure you aren't just exaggerating."

You tell your mother that you'd like to get some rest first.

"Good idea," she tells you. "After what you went through, you need it. I treated your wounds, changed you into warm clothes, and relocated your arm. So, you should be fine after you get some rest. Your father will bring you in some food soon. You still need to eat, after all."

She leaves the room, and your father once again tells you how happy he is that you're safe before following.

You spend the entire day in bed, resting, occasionally eating, getting up only to use the chamber pot. The next day, however, you feel as good as new. Your parents have gone to work, so the day is yours.

You understandably are less than eager to go back into the woods so soon. So, you decide to visit your mother instead. The Watchtower is on the northern end of the city, overlooking the valley that leads to it. The other soldiers don't give you any trouble as you approach. After all, you've come to visit your mother plenty of times in the past. You find her inside, sharpening blades. She is dressed in standard issue armor, decorated with the symbol of your kingdom; the dragon. She looks up as you approach, and sets aside her weapons.

"Good to see you're on your feet again," she tells you. "You need something?"

You tell her that you want to show her your waterbending. She smiles and gets up, shouting to the other soldiers that she'll be back soon as she leaves the tower with you.

"Alright, the docks aren't exactly a good place for this, so we're going to that lake in the woods," she tells you. "And don't worry, I'm armed."

The two of you hike through the woods until you reach the lake where you nearly died yesterday. The place seems a lot less peace inspiring than it did before, but with your mother there, you feel far less anxious. She stands silently, calmly waiting for you to show her what you want to show her.

Not wasting any time with the small stuff, you decide to show your mother your favorite truck right away. You begin by pushing and pulling the water, creating a strong enough current for you to use. You point your fingers downward and slowly raise your arms. The water rises into a mighty wave. With a push, you send it crashing into the center of the lake with a thundering crash.

Your mother stares out at the lake, then at you. "That was incredible. I've never seen waterbending like that. I'm amazed you didn't kill that Crocodile Wolf with power like that."

You tell your mom that it wasn't very difficult for you to learn how to do. You go on to ask why none of the waterbenders she met could do it.

She shrugs. "I'm honestly not sure. Apparently a few waterbenders have learned to do things like what you just did. And then, of course, the Avatars could do even better tricks apparently. As for everybody else, I guess they just never figured out how. Bending's never really been complex. Waterbenders move some water around, Firebenders throw fire balls, Earthbenders push rocks, Airbenders jump high and create wind. Most benders never do anything more complicated than that, and the ones who do never really feel like sharing how they did it."

You ask her to tell you about the Avatars.

She smiles. "I've told you these stories since you were a little kid, but alright. One more time won't hurt."

She takes a seat on the ground, and you sit in front of her. "A long time ago, the world was full of spirits. Humans only lived on giant creatures called Lion Turtles. People only left the Lion Turtles to search for food, and the Lion Turtles gave them power over the elements to defend themselves from the spirits and animals. The people were expected to return that power when they returned, but one day, a man named Wan did not return the gift of fire to the Lion Turtle on which he lived. He led the poor people on that Lion Turtle against the men who ruled over them. For this, he was banished into the spirit wilds. Nobody really knows how, but he survived out there for a long time. Eventually, he learned to master not only fire, but air, water, and earth as well. Some say a spirit helped him to do this, but nobody knows for sure. Wan eventually sent the spirits out of our world, and humans left the Lion Turtles. The three kingdoms were soon born, and prepared to go to war with each other. Wan tried to stop the war from happening, but perished. The war raged for decades until a man named Gonyo appeared, claiming to be the reincarnation of Wan. Nobody took him seriously until he showed that he could control all four elements. He was then acknowledged as the second Avatar. He used his great powers to force the rulers of the three kingdoms to stop the war. He died months later. Thanks to the Avatars, the world now belongs to man, and the Great War is over."

After listening to her story, you ask your mom how the Avatar could master all four elements when few people can even use one of them.

"I have no idea," she tells you. "Some people think the spirits helped Wan do it, and since Gonyo was his reincarnation, he was just able to do it. I can't really think of a better explanation."

She gets to her feet. "Anyway, I've got to get back to my post. I wasn't supposed to leave at all, let alone for this long. I'm proud of you, and I'll see you tonight."

With your mom gone, you decide to go and explore the woods. Leaving the lake behind, you head into the trees, searching for anything interesting. Part of you worries about running into that Crocodile Wolf again, while another part of you would like nothing better than to see it so you can rip it limb from limb. For a while, you see nothing worth your interest, but eventually, you come to a ridge overlooking a canyon, stretching further than you can see. You could explore the canyon, who knows what might be down there? Of course, you still never explored that one cave like you wanted to. And, you could always go back to the lake and practice your water bending. Maybe you could use it to catch a fish! Or, you could just go home.

Leaving the canyon behind and deciding against returning to the lake, you walk through the woods to the cave that you've been wanting to explore. You approach its massive mouth, and see that it stretches off into darkness. Without a way to provide light, you'll be fumbling around in the dark. You could still try and simply keep against the walls, but without being able to see, there doesn't seem to be much point of exploring the cave.

You throw caution to the wind and enter the cave anyway. Sticking to the walls, you work your way around inside. As expected, you can't see a thing. You're beginning to question why you came here, when a familiar hiss from in front of you tells you once and for all that this was a bad idea.
