It is ten days ride back to Lumen. Considerably longer than the original trip due to your pesky need for sleep. Yet your time spent on the road with Leon was no in vain, for you find that sleeping in the saddle as he taught you becomes easier each night. When you arrive at the city wall, you are allowed in with no troubles. The city itself looks much the same, glittering in the afternoon sun, and yet somehow seems alien. You don't dwell at the gates long.

You ride Pedro down the streets of the city, catching the eye of many people as you do. It seems horses are not common in town, and draw a bit of attention.

You reach the gates of the house in record time. After tying Pedro up, you approach the gate and enter. The house seems silent, but the only way to know if it's empty is to check, and so you knock. There is no response.

The door opens, revealing a tall and buxom woman with head hair. She smiles when she opens the door, but upon seeing you, it turns to a scowl.

"Oh. It's you. Here to break my sister's heart again, you little rat?"

Her face does not change. "I don't know, my mother is away and I don't think we should be letting manure salesmen into the house with her out." You ask again to see her, trying to ignore her comment. "Ugh, you're tenacious. I don't know what she saw in you. Fine, I'll ask around. Anita! Anastasia!" After she calls out, you hear footsteps from around the house. Soon, two more girls enter the doorway. They too are not afraid to express their contempt visually.

"This little boy says he wants to see our poor sister. I think he wants to come crawling back to her." "Well that's just very sad. She doesn't want to see you anymore. She's locked up in her room and she won't open the door for anyone but our mother, so there's no way you're getting in anytime soon." "And besides, you smell like a horse and you look like something the cat dragged in." You are startled when Anastasia steps forward and puts a finger firmly in your face. "You know, there are a lot of good boys in this town who would give their right arm to marry a girl as sweet, smart and beautiful as our sister! We're not about to let some street punk come in and play with her emotions! She doesn't want you back, and we aren't letting you in, so you can just go off with your dirty friend to play with squirrels or dig up gopher holes, or whatever it is Rangers do! Good day!"

Before you can respond, the door is slammed in your face.

Seeing no alternative, you decide the only way to speak to Annalise is to do so via less than reputable methods. You make your way around the house, to the wall just beneath her window. Using the very techniques Annalise taught you, you scale the wall.

You reach the second floor and peer in through Annalise's window. The shades are pulled closed, so everything you see appears as a faint silhouette. You do, however, spy Annalise sitting on her bed. She appears to be playing with something in her hands, but the shape is too vague to make out.

The bedroom door bursts open and all three of Annalise's sisters enter. The fury in their eyes can only be described as 'burning red and unlimited'. You try to plead your case to Annalise, but before you can finish your speech, her sisters produce golden sun symbols from various compartments on their persons. They speak in unison, complex and echoing words that you don't understand. Suddenly a white light flashes and you are sent flying, pinned against the wall. Another light flashes right after, slamming you back down on the floor. A third and final light binds you, pulling your body into a ball and sealing you in an orb of golden energy. Two of the sisters surround you and begin rolling you out of the room while the third kneels by Annalise and takes her in an embrace. The room is out of sight quickly.

They roll you down the stairs, intentionally kicking you so that you bounce, and out into the garden. As you sit, trapped, looking at them, they scowl down at you. "I should have known you'd do something like this. I bet you were in cahoots with that thief girl who robbed us too!" Anita holds her sister back from kicking you with her bare foot. "Calm down, don't give him the satisfaction. I have a better idea. Let's wake up big brother. He just got back from fighting that Black Cultist, he'll love something to plunge daddy's sword into now that he's got it." They both giggle and head inside, leaving you to roll about in the garden. Things look a bit grim.

You shut your eyes and try to focus on something else. Leon must be back home by now, training to be a Black Beret, and all you've managed to do is get beaten up by some clerics. Yet somehow, this feels like it isn't the worst thing that could happen to you.

The back door of the house opens. Form it emerges a paragon of a man. His dark red hair, shaved on the sides, hangs down messily. He wears nothing but a pair of red, loose trousers. His bare chest and stomach look to be cut from granite, and much of his body has light scars cut across it. His brown eyes have dark bags beneath them. In his left hand he carries a sword, the same one you saw Annalise's mother wear to mass when you first stayed the night. He approaches you silently, tall and intimidating. It almost seems like the sun serves as his spotlight. He stops just a foot away from you and draws the sword in his right hand. The blade shines in the light, making your heart skip a beat. He touches it to the orb of energy, then draws it back for a powerful thrust.

Live of the land like "hunting", why does everyone assume "live off the land = farming".

Also, I think going back to Lumen after things get hard and because we miss our little girlfriend instead of venturing forward become stronger is just counter productive to the character and story.

>>31007780
Ok, let me revise then then. We destroyed her, and showed her she really didn't mean much when we were willing to just up and leave to go with some drunken ranger to the North at a drop of the hat's notice. Leon and us were probably her only real friend who enjoyed going out and going to adventures and getting beat up with her. And we leave her, and all she really got was like a wave good bye.

If we just decided to stick with our decision and join Leon, join the bandit, or the desert or marshes, I would be okay with that too.

But nope, we go back to Lumen. How we no real self respect or anything? I mean, Annalise was our friend and liked us because we were brave and strong, really warmed up to us when we stood together in the fight and protected her. If we came back years later, she would still have that same respect and see we are still strong and brave, respecting our decision to leave as she grew older. But no, we go back with our tail between our legs, the one thing Annalise didn't probably expect from the guy who used to stand up to thugs at knife point and take on 3+ guys at once.

I am a little peeved.

Just wanted to air my feelings, nevertheless, continue on glorious QM!
>>
>>31007991
You look him in the eye and grit your teeth, ready for what is about to come.

The sword comes in fast and pierces the orb, but stopping just close enough to prick your forehead and draw a tiny drop of blood. He then removes the blade and returns it to it's home. The orb cracks around you, then shatters, releasing you onto the grass. You uncurl your body and stretch out, glad to have your mobility back. You look back up at Annalise's brother, and he is not as cheerful.

"I just sailed two thousand miles to an island where people eat rice for every damned meal, to hunt down a man nearly burned me to death on several occasions, got beaten by the bare fists of a man who smelled of spider-webs, and then had to come back in a vortex of fire that left a smell of sulfur I needed three baths to wash off. And now I get to come home to find out that some urchin from off the street stole my baby sister's heart then crushed it to go live in the woods with a drunkard and his ward, and then he had the STONES to return to my house and harass her in the hopes that she'd by some miracle take him back as her love. Things weren't starting to 'get hard' really, we could come back and become stronger either way, you mean we didn't become stronger the way of the rangers.

It's not lack of guts to come back and try to fix things, it actually shows guts. Gutlessness would be to run away from this situation

Both seem kinda related to me.
I agree with you at points of being a dickhole and the greatness, and the fixing things.
Still just coming back without really a plan and winging it (why!?!?!), also we didn't have to do it immediately (not when the wounds are still fresh). We are planning on returning back and making things right, but not alone and not without Leon, and not without a plan.

Plus I feel like we should have either stayed in the first place, or just kept on trucking and had reunion sometime down along the road when the MC is older.

Also the ranger thing; don't really care if it was rangers or bandits (wish we had picked bandits and became like Robin Hood) we learned to become strong from, I just wanted us to keep our head up and keep moving on.

Still nevertheless! We should just continue on! Go forth noble QM!

You ride up to the Honeybee Inn and tie Pedro to a post. The place seems very clean on the outside, with lovely blue paint and batwing doors with heart shaped holes in the front. When you enter, you are stricken by the sweet scent of flowers. The inside is decorated with several sofas and a lounge chairs, all of which look terribly comfy to sit in. You focus on your business, and approach the front desk. The woman behind the counter, an older but very distinguished looking madam with a great bosom peers down at you through horn rimmed spectacles.

"Oh my word. I never thought I'd see the day. Well, coin it coin. What will it be, dear." You ask for a full bed and bath. She smiles and laughs to herself. "All right then, just look over this menu and sign at the bottom." She hands you a folded bit of paper, which of course you cannot read. You tell her as much. "That is a bit of a problem. Ah, but I can tell you just by the look in your eye. Not to worry, I'll have it sorted out by the time you wash up." You thank her and pay her the ten coins. She hands you a key with a wooden plate hooked onto the end. Thankfully you know the numeral for 9, and head upstairs.

You find your room behind a red door. Inside it looks just as cozy as it did below. The bed is large and soft, and there is a wardrobe in the corner. You also see a door that leads to a large tub. You drop your sack and enter the bathroom.

There is a large tub here, filling with hot water as you come in. There are bottles of odd liquids, all fragrant when you open them. Not being able to read, you assume they must just be a variety of soaps to cover the desires of all patrons. Once the tub is full, you strip down and step in. The hot water is soothing on sore muscles. You can already feel the stress melting away. You simmer for a few minutes before dunking your head in and start scrubbing your hair. You pour some of the red stuff into your palm. The smell is subtle, but pleasant. It lathers up nicely as you apply it, and you get your whole body and even your hair.

As you are rinsing, you hear the door of your room open. A woman's voice cries out. "Room service sir! Oh, you're washing? Would you like it in the tub, or the room?" You realize that this must be the selection from the menu you couldn't read. Seeing as it came with the bath, you don't see much reason to turn it down.

You tell her to leave it in the room while you finish up. She doesn't respond, but you assume she complies when the door shuts again. You go back to washing.

When you finish your bath, you emerge from the tub and drain the water. There is a small towel ready for you, which you use to dry off as best you can. There is also an adult sized bathrobe. It likely won't fit you well, but it's your only available clean clothing.

You slip on the bathrobe and tie the band around the waist as best as you can. It is quite loose, but at the same time wearing it makes you feel highly sophisticated. You exit the bathroom and enter the bedroom.

You are surprised to find a cleric waiting for you. Her strawberry blonde hair is tied into two long braids, and she smiles warmly as you emerge from the steamy tub.

"Hello sir, I've been expecting you. I see that you've just washed, so if you like we can begin the service. I do hope you enjoy yourself, I have been practicing my anointment since I was very young. Just sit next to me and we'll start." She pulls up a small tray of bottles, colored from red to yellow and all tones in between. She pops the cork on one and runs it under her nose, giggling as she seals it up again.

Something begins to feel odd about this process. She continues, eventually working down to your upper back, into the robe.

Unsure of what's going on, you ask her what this is about.

"Shh, I know you're nervous, I can feel it in your muscles. This must be your first time. But you're such a tall, broad boy. Oh, I'm sorry, you're a man now, aren't you. Or soon, at the very least. I bet the girls are already slipping you notes and giving you cookies, aren't they. Just relax, I promise this will only feel pleasant for you so long as you let me do all the work. If there's anything you want to talk about, I'm here to listen. Tell me everything, I give you my word you'll feel better"

You feel at ease. There is a sort of warm feeling building in you. Her words are gentle, and soothing. You let go of your stress, and begin confessing your thoughts to her, as well as telling her the story of Annalise and Leon.

"I see. It is hard for a man your age. You must choose a path in life, but no path is clear. They are all overgrown and ever winding. Love especially, is very hard. I know. But, something tells me this girl still wants you to be a part of her life. Time heals all wounds, even wounds of love." She begins slipping your robe down and moves her hands to your lower back and ribs. The room seems to be getting hotter, the steam from the bath must have seeped in somehow. "You're a strong boy, I can feel it in the heat of your body. I think if you try, you truly will achieve greatness. Now, lay back and we can move on."

You nervously relax into her lap. She presses her hands down onto your chest. Suddenly, as she moves toward your stomach, the world seems to snap back into place. You recall the day your father made you watch two horses at a ranch near your home. Three years ago, it made no sense, but now everything is all too clear. You can feel yourself tensing up.

"Whatever, kid. I get paid either way." She picks up her tray and exits the room. You breath a sigh of relief, and quickly change back into your rags and boots. You run downstairs and to the front desk, explaining to the woman what occurred.

"Oh, I'm sorry, kid. Guy walks into a house of vice with a pocket full of coins and I can only assume. No refunds, but the room is still yours for the night, so keep the key for now." You mount Pedro, and begin asking folks around town where you can find a clothing shop. They point you to a place not far from the inn.

You enter the store and hear the squeaking of a spinning wheel in the background. There are all sorts of things on display, mostly wool, some cotton, and some leather. A simple outfit would be cheaper than even a silver coin, but it has no real pizzaz. Browsing you also find something nicer, a vest and bracer affair that seems to be meant for parties, but would provide decent protection against blunt force. Finally, there is a true set of party clothes. Costing two gold coins, these would allow you to stand out anywhere.

Again with the help of the locals, you sniff out a cake shop with a good reputation. You need to go halfway across town, but you do find it.

The place seems to by run by an old woman and her students. They are kind enough, and allow you to browse the shop at your leisure. You try your hardest to recall what Annalise's brother said. Sadly there are no cakes here that match the exact specifications. When you talk to the old woman, she says she is willing to prepare the cake, but it won't be ready until tonight. "Ho! This is old money, kid. Ancient. The clergy used to use them as ritual objects. There are a lot of myths about them, like being able to speak to people over long distances with them, or being able to grant wishes, but who knows if any of that is true. You never see them change hands in a place like this. What we do doesn't technically qualify as whoring, but the clergy doesn't like us anyway." Suddenly, her brother stops. He turns around and looks in your direction. You duck down behind Pedro, hoping he didn't spot you. When you look again, they are on the move. It seems clear.

As you turn the corner to the post where you tied her, you are stricken silent, frozen in place. A tall, aged man in white robes and armor stands next to Pedro, petting her mane. She leans into him, as if asking for more affection. The man's face is wizened and quite rough, but you can almost certainly see a resemblance between him and Leman. There is only one assumption to be made. He looks over to you, and for a brief second you feel as though your body heats up. He lets out a short chuckle under his breath, and walks toward you. You brace yourself, but nothing happens, and he walks by. You spin around to see him, and he turns back as well. His eyes lock yours in place, unable to look away.

"Tomorrow morning." His voice is somewhat gruff, but still kind. "The palace at sunrise. Be ready." With that, he turns away and makes for the house.

Gonna stop here for tonight. Will pick it up in a few hours when I'm rested. If someone will be kind and archive in case the thread falls off, I'd be very grateful. If this thread is still around when I wake up, I'll use it. If not, I'll start a new one. Bump it if you're around, so we don't have to spread the story out over too many entries.

Thanks to everyone who played today, I love you all.

You wake in the Honeybee inn, groggy and slightly confused. There is but one tiny window in the room, but even now there is no light pouring into it. You slap yourself to regain your senses, then step out of bed.

You make your way to the bathroom to splash water on your face, as well as try your hardest to fix your hair into something resembling a kempt status. This is not entirely successful. With all that done, you head out your bedroom door and make your way down the stairs to the lobby. The inn is quiet now, and not even the lamps burn. The air itself is chilly, rattling you to your very bones. When you emerge from the batwing doors, stepping out into the world, you can see the faint blue of a sky that will soon light with cosmic fire. There are no sounds, not even birds to ruin this pure perfection.

You pet Pedro before mounting her. You feel like you may have started growing fond of this creature. The two of you start off at a low trot, and soon are galloping through the clear streets of the city, feeling the cold morning air tear against your skin. In your mind, it seems like the claws of the world are tearing away your past life, in preparation for what is to come.

You dismount near the golden gates of the holy palace. The armored guard is absent, but the gates are open. You take this to mean you are invited in. As you enter, you hear a heavenly choir of voices in all ranges, singing in harmony. The words mean nothing to you, and yet they evoke a feeling of peace and love. So much so that you start tearing up the closer you get. The center walkway of the chapel is lined with tall candlesticks, each draped in banners bearing the sun's mark and holding three candles, each carved with a word you cannot read. At the end of the hall there stands the bishop, a raven haired woman in red robes, holding a golden chalice. Beside her is the man you saw last night, holding in front of him a white cloth with the sun's mark.
>>
>>31016099
You slowly approach the end of the aisle, nervously watching the two even as they bow their heads in prayer. When you reach them, you are told to kneel, and you do.

"Child who has come here today." The woman speaks. "You have come seeking guidance from the light of the father above. This light can warm, and it can burn. Its burden is not meant for those who are not willing to allow the flames of righteousness consume their very body, to fuel the light and drive back the dark. By drinking from this chalice, you accept the burden of holy fire, and all the tasks set before you by the church in the name of the Father. Make your choice now, knowing that it cannot be undone."

She kneels and holds the chalice out before you. You place your hands on it and look into the water within. It sparkles, even with no sunlight. Yet, something about it looks surprisingly cold.

The water is cool as it trickles down your throat. When it hits your stomach, the world around you begins to swirl out of control. You hold on to your senses as long as you can. The old man approaches, and drapes you with the white cloth. You feel a tremendous and relaxing warmth engulf your body. Slowly, things go dark.

You find yourself in a void, completely lacking in any light or purpose. Then, there are three lights, each shining down on one tool of the church. A sword, a shield, and a golden symbol. They present themselves, lashing out against the dark. You can feel the void trying to drag you back, away from the light, but surely you can reach one of the tools in time. You extend your hand.

The next three years pass. Days, to months, to seasons. The church takes you in, gives you a bed, three meals a day, and teaches you. You learn to read the common tongue, as well as count all the way up to the sixth power. They teach you the sword, and how to carry yourself in battle. You are not truly a paladin yet, and so your armor is not prepared, but all the same you can feel yourself grow in strength and stature. It all leads to the day of the sunrise festival.

You wake, groggy and slightly confused. The common room is already bustling as the other men pull on their clothes and leave for business around town. You search your head, wondering if there isn't something you need to do, but nothing comes to mind. You get out of bed anyway. and slip into your boots. At the least you must perform morning prayer, sometime before breakfast.

You head toward the baths. The large room, tiled in white with three great basins of endlessly flowing water, is as usual occupied by the other men of the order. People of the cloth are taught to have no shame of their bodies, but even so you don't love having to use a communal bath. You step in for a soak and a scrub, letting the hot water soothe you.

>>
>>31016428
You look down into the reflective surface of the water. The image before you is one that still seems strange. Gone is the thin, boney farm boy that first came to this city. Staring back from the water is a tall, broad man of 16, with sun kissed skin and a true man's hair. You still catch yourself admiring your bulging muscles from time to time, those that the paladins have worked so hard to carve onto you. Though this body is usually hidden beneath robes and light armor, you feel powerful just the same. In fact, you've already begun to catch up to some of the others in terms of brute strength. In a few years, you will be able to outdo Pedro at hauling weight.

You emerge from the tub after washing and dry off, before dressing in your robes and boots. You then head to the chapel for your morning prayer. That done, you have the morning to yourself. You feel a bit peckish, and there seems to be something you need to do today, but for the life of you you can't recall what it is.

>A) Eat in the mess hall

Maybe some our fellow paladins-in-training can help us remember
>>
>>31016580
You make your way to the mess hall for a quick meal. You receive your tray and look around for a seat. The paladins tend to sit together, being that they spend so much time in a group, moreso than any of the other sects. You find a spot within the crowd and have a seat. Most of the men are talking about jewelry for some odd reason, but you don't seem to be able to get a word in edgewise. The women on the other hand are busy conversing about dresses and armor, a topic you know little about and don't feel confident butting into. All in all, it's a quiet meal, but an entertaining one.

You stand up and prepare to take your tray to the bin, when something bumps into your back. You turn and see Annalise, as well as Anita. Anita smiles bashfully for some reason, while Annalise stutters, trying to force out words.

"O-oh, I didn't see you. Hi! That is, good m-morning. Um. Hi. Um, are you going anywhere today? I mean what are you doing today? I mean, how are you? Are you going anywhere today?" Something about her seems very off, but you've learned it's often best to simply ignore these sorts of things with Annalise.

A) "I'm probably going to get a workout in, and see what I feel like from there."
B) "Nowhere in particular."

>>

You tell Annalise that you didn't have anything special planned. This seems to take the wind out of her sails. To recover, you ask if she intends to do anything interesting.

"Oh, no. I was just going to stay in my room, I guess. You know, all alone. Because my sister and mom have such a big day planned. But I'm fine in my room, really. Maybe I'll help dad in the garden. Normal, boring, every day things that I can do every normal day of the year. Yeah." You really feel like Annalise is trying to tell you something, but she was never good at dropping hints. As she continues to babble, your mind wanders.

Annalise has grown considerably since you first came. She is still a bit on the short side, but she is no longer what one would call scrawny. As you suspected years ago, she has begun to inherit her mother's matronly figure, with generous hips and a modest bust. She is still nowhere as grand and 'bountiful' as her sister Anastasia, but time changes things.

Soon you notice that she has stopped talking, and looks down at the ground, moving the dust with her foot. Anita looks at you expectantly.

A) "Well, you know where to find me if you want to do something."
B) "Are you sure there's nothing on your mind?"

"Ugh. No. Shut up, you jerk." She throws a wild fist, hitting you square in the chest. You feign pain, not having the heart to tell her that her punches have long since stopped hurting you. "I'm going home, you can do whatever." Annalise turns on her heels and strides away. Anita looks back at you, calls you a rude name, and chases after her. You still can't seem to recall what she's upset about, but there is something just behind mental fog. It does feel sort of important, but if it really was wouldn't you have remembered? At any rate, wasting the day won't accomplish anything.

As you can't seem to recall the specifics of what significance today holds, you think it's a good to cover your bases. You head out and find Pedro, mounting her and riding into the market.

The place is bustling today. There seem to be a great number of men carrying paper packages and small boxes, mostly wood and felt. There in fact appear very few women at all, even in some of the storefronts. Your thoughts scratch inside your skull. You shake away the cloudy thoughts and focus on finding a florist.

You encounter one, but there seems to be a bit of a line. You consider waiting at the back, but then remember that you didn't train for three years to wait in lines. you shove your way to the front and speak to the clerk. He seems nearly drowned in his work, but you manage to squeeze in an order for a small bouquet. For some reason the prices today are outrageous, costing an entire gold coin, but you grit your teeth and pay. You squeeze back out of the shop and into the street. The flowers are safe. You mount Pedro again and set off.

You ride all around town, picking up objects from stores scattered around the market. You practically run Pedro ragged this way. You gather a basket packed with apple wine, and two large slices of strawberry-banana cake. You also stop at a jeweler to pick up a gold bangle with a green gem set in the center. With all this, you have but a single gold coin left. You sigh as you slip it back in your pocket and head toward the house.

When you arrive, you see Anastasia and Annabelle leaving together, boarding a coach. They seem to be in high spirits, but as usual when you wave to them they only turn their noses up and away.

You politely wish them well as they board the carriage. It rolls away, and you make for the front door. There is sound from inside, and so you knock.

After a moment, the door swings open. Before you is Leman, clean shaven for once, and in full regalia. He wears parade armor, a gilded sort that serves no true battle function, as well as a white cape that hangs off of his broad shoulders. Without exchanging words, he understands your purpose, and calls for Annalise.

"She'll be down in a moment." Leman slowly shuts the door, leaving you to face the white wood in silence. When it opens again, Annalise stands before you in her nightgown, holding a large clay pot. Her eyes appear slightly red and dry, her hair is a bit frizzy, even for her, and she has half of a large chocolate cookie in her free hand. There also appear to be a few crumbs on her face.
