You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed.

When you came to, you had washed afloat in the middle of a freshwater sea, and were a long way from home. You don’t know what happened, but it seems that you’ve been unconscious, regenerating, for a very long time. The people you met spoke your language, but were strange, as if willingly stuck in the dark ages by religious zeal.

But the demons are still real, still attacking. Nearly alone on the open expanse of water, drowning death in every direction, a roc attacked. And you learned just how weak your body had become. Hunger had sapped your muscles, and time had let the souls of your demons wash away. You actually cut yourself when you ripped out its beating heart.

The two men on the fishing boat wasted little time in abandoning you at the nearest village, where you were taken in by the local temple as a pilgrim. The Dragon, who saved the world, birthed the demons, and lent you a fraction of his power, is somewhere nearby. But the people of this land of Lyr worships him as God.
>>
The temple gave you a place to rest for the night, in which you slept for a very long time. The mental toll must have been more than you estimated, but no threats approached as you slumbered. When your eyes snap open, you can smell a rich stew being cooked nearby. They’ll surely give you some, but to eat your sate would push the bounds of hospitality. Furthermore, the only clothing you have on you is a bloody pair of cotton trousers, you’ll have to find a way to clean yourself up as you try to find a way back to UNAAF.

Judging by your current weight, you only check in at about 100 kg, rather than your usual 200 kg. That's a lot of eating still.

The priestesses of the temple had kindly given you a straw mattress to sleep on in a back room. Not as comfortable as the high density memory foam back at base, but better than sleeping in full combat gear on concrete. They had left you a basin of water to clean up in, which quickly turns redish black as you clean the blood from your arms. You do what you can with your new beard and merely lament the condition of your trousers.

The length of your hair is simply disgusting. The tips of it fall past your shoulders, and the front hairs keep falling in front of your eyes and obscuring your vision. Without a blade, there is little you can do about it though. With your condition as clean as can be reasonable, you follow your nose down the halls of the temple. The two priestesses that run the temple, the old one and the one in training, live here apparently. Their larder is apparently stocked by donations of the villagers.

You find the young priestess Isabella in the back, minding the stew in the kitchen. You clear your throat to let her know you’re there. Decades in the field have long ago trained you to not make any noise at all while walking. She spins around in shock, but smiles. “Good to see you awake pilgrim. Mother thought you may have passed away in your sleep before the snoring started.”

You shouldn’t have been snoring, that’s a weakness in the flesh that should have been weeded out. “Just needed rest, warmth, and now food.”

“Well, I’ve certainly made enough for us, we could probably feed five people with this much but the Krah meat was going to go bad,” Isabella says.

1/2
>>
You grin, “I think we’ll manage.” She quickly pours you a bowl of the stew and begins discussing how she cooked it. She turns away from you to search around the shelves for spices, and when she turns back you’ve already finished the bowl. Could have used a bit more cooking to extract the flavor from the bird meat, which is apparently what a Krah is. Might be a relative of a roc, but the flavor is blander and the sinew tougher.

“My, you eat like an ape. It’s good for someone of your age to have such an appetite though, would you like more?”

“Of course,” you say, sliding the bowl back to her. “I found it quite delicious.”

“Just one second,” she says, snatching the bowl up and taking it back to the fire. “So, how long are you going to spend with us? The Mother will be holding prayer after we eat.”

Keep in close to the chest. We are clearly out of our element in culture and society. Play it by ear and be reactionary and cautiously actionary. We might be throwing around a whole slew of ques that make no sense to the average villager.

We should just act like a humble old man wanting to see God (or a priestess, whatever). It gels with our plans (I think we should try to see her) and it's a good cover for those plans.

“I think it would be a good thing for me to attend the prayer. Do you have a pair of scissors I can clean myself up with though?” you say as she hands you a second bowl of the stew. “And perhaps some water to go with the meal?”

Isabella’s laugh is pleasant, reminiscent of Lauren’s, but without that hint of despair beneath it. Just a bit too restrained. “There’s a well out back, you can get as much water as you’d like there. Although it’s a bit uncommon for a pilgrim to want to shave. Normally they let it grow for their entire journey, as a show of faith.”

You hold your tongue for a moment as you think. It’s going to be tricky to keep up the façade. “Is it not the right thing to do when your pilgrimage is at an end?”

“If you have found your goal, then I suppose so. I can bring you my pair of scissors soon enough. Tell me about yourself Joshua, we didn’t get very well acquainted before your fatigue took you to sleep,” Isabella says as she sits across from you at the table with her own bowl of stew.

You think for a moment as you drink the majority of the broth from the bowl. “I’m afraid I don’t have much to tell. I was waylaid a short time ago. Struck in the head it seems,” you say as you finger the soft spot in your skull. The bone is starting to fuse back together, but you still wouldn’t want to get it hit. “When I came to, fishermen were pulling me from the sea.”

“Is that where the blood came from?”

1/2
>>
You study her face. She’s curious, but not disbelieving. “Something like that.” She proceeds to tell you a bit about herself as you finish the bowl, and then a third bowl. She was the youngest in her family, nothing would be bequeathed to her so she did what honor she could and joined the temple. Mother Margery taught her the scriptures over the years and soon she’ll be the head of the temple. She’s seems to be nothing but a small town girl in a small town.

The oddest thing is how peaceful Lyr seems to be. They have demons nearby, as evidenced by the roc, but she grew up not in fear of attack, not running for safety and praying to the soldiers for help.

When she’s done, you thank her and excuse yourself to the well. You instantly spot it when you enter the small pasture. It is hands down the oddest thing in the entire village so far. The temple had been constructed of wood and cobblestone, construction that doesn’t require machinery, and the other buildings were all wood. But this well was not made by hand.

You slowly approach it, almost scared that it’s merely an illusion. It’s a rusting, metal pipe. On the top of it is some simple mechanism to block the flow of water, but the pipe is a bog standard industrial pipe sticking out of the ground.

“What are you looking at?” Isabella asks as she steps out with her pair of scissors.

To add to this for you, you have a full military education, with extensive knowledge about every military in the world and how they combat demons. Which is considerably easier than it sounds since almost the entire world was dead by your last recollection.

So, you are voting very split down the middle, 3-4 by my count. But there was a good argument for the "nothing" camp, so I'm counting that as another vote and calling it tied

Furthermore, the "Nothing" camp goes along with the previous sentiment of playing your cards close, so I'm going to go with that, unless there is some outcry.

“Oh, nothing. Nothing. Thank you for the scissors,” you assure her as you stand back up. You smile. Typically, normal humans recoil at first sight, not bad enough to change your habits, but the average person is taken aback by your maw of fangs. Lauren and your family excluded of course.

You shut your lips, but note that she didn’t react at all. As she starts talking, you quickly check your teeth and find them to be blunted and smaller than before, the enamel must be missing. It’d be easier to just regrow them in whole than try to regenerate what you have. “There’s a robe I can bring you in just a moment, a simple acolyte’s robe. It would be better than you appearing in your current condition.”

“I would appreciate it,” you say as you accept the scissors from her. She nods and returns to the temple.

You wait to make sure she’s gone, then spin back on the pipe. The mechanism on top is made of wood and some kind of organic caulk, clearly added relatively recently. The pipe itself is sticking out of the dirt from far below, and the rusting steel is quite cold from the water inside. Nothing around you indicates at all that it would be the source of the pipe, but you can’t quite be certain When you open the valve on top, water squirts out, clear as can be.

You cup your hands beneath the stream to taste the water, and then drink deeply of it. There’s of course the residue of rust, but the water is quite pure aside from that. That the pipe would be made without rustproofing is odd though. Regardless, the water is cleaner than what you could get from the river, so you gorge yourself further on it, until your gut is bloated with the nectar.

The water is purer than well water should be.

You think shaving will cause our powers to return?
>>
Then you turn the scissors on your scraggly hair. She didn’t bring you a mirror, and you didn’t exactly ask for one either, but you get a good gauge for it by hand. You’ve done this before with less, so it is but a simple matter for you to clip off the long locks of hair. You quickly discover that the scissors could use sharpening, but you make do. Within a few minutes, the top of your head would pass standard inspection, and you turn your attention to the mess that is your beard.

Isabella walks back out with the robe as you’re putting the final cuts on your beard. The scissors weren’t sharp enough to shave with properly, so you were forced to merely trim as short as you could, leaving you to look like you hadn’t shaved in three days, rather than some unknown amount of years. You notice that she’s staring.

Glancing down at the mess of hair around you, you try to apologize for the mess but she cuts you off. “I’m sorry, it’s nothing. I just feel terrible because I’ve been treating you like an old old man. And, well you looked a lot older than you are with that beard on you.” She’s just a bit too embarrassed to meet your gaze.

“Thank you, but don’t be embarrassed, I actually am every bit as old as you thought I was,” you say as you hand the scissors back to her and take the robe from her. “It’s good to hear that I look young though.”

“I think most men pray to look as good as you do at your age,” Isabella says as you examine the robe and eventually figure out how to don it. “I’m sure you can find your way to the main hall. I have to help with the prayer,” she says as she walks back into the temple.

Even from the very back of the temple, you can already hear the crowd of people gathered. Families mostly, not enough to fill the hall though. You slowly and quietly take a place near the side entrance to the hall so you can watch from the back as the priestesses conduct the ceremony.

The old priestess is at the podium at the end of the hall. Behind her is a mural depicting an ornate ouroborus, which must be the Dragon. And in the center is a pentagram, the common symbol for the human soul. If you were to invoke your bindings, the exact same symbol would appear in the center of your chest.

1/2?
>>
When Mother Margery speaks, the hall quiets save for some of the children. “Harm not man nor beast in your care. Reach not for that which you cannot attain with your own hands. Seek not death, lest death seek you. Let all be judged fairly by the human laws. Live with honor. Venture not to the desert. Seek not to fight the demons,” she says. “This is the Dragon Code. By this code we are sheltered by the dragon’s wing,” she says, and the crowd repeats it. “With this code, we live in the Dragon’s shadow,” she says, and the crowd repeats. “In this code, is the dragon’s truths made human,” she says, and the crowd echoes. “This is the code that has protected us for generations, given to the Lady Lyrra in our most dire hour, by the Dragon itself,” she finishes. She goes on with more prayers, for such things as forgiveness and well-being, but your attention is off of her.

There’s a child a few rows ahead of you, and he’s looking at you. Wouldn’t be the first time, but this child is not human. He stinks of beast, his ears are hairy and come to tips, and a dog tail is swishing through the air from his backside. He stinks of beast, and his mother is the same.

They’re abhuman monsters, the kind of filth you slaughter. But no one around them seems surprised by their existence. No one is sitting close to them, but they are not outright rejected. “Stop staring at him Lucian,” the mother hisses at the child, but he doesn’t move.

“But Momma, that man’s an elf,” he says, pointing at you.

2/3
>>
“We are at prayer, stop making a scene,” she hisses at him as she grabs her child and pulls him back into his seat. She glances over her shoulder at you, afraid. Your hand is clenching the pew so tightly that the wood is splintering apart.

A snake hisses as it’s dragged up to the podium. Isabella has the creature pinned by its neck despite its struggles, and a knife in her other hand. Mother Margery is beside her, filling a goblet with wine. “And with this sacrifice to the Dragon, as a symbol of his blood in ours,” Mother Margery says as Isabella closes her eyes and cuts the head off the snake. “We take drink of, as sign of our faith in his divine protection,” she says as Isabella hoists the corpse over the goblet to let the blood drain in with the wine.

The two priestesses both sip from the goblet once it’s full and the people of the village shuffle to their feet, slowly forming a line.

You release your grip on the pew as the hound creatures stand up and join the line. You get up, when everyone’s attention is forward, and slip out of the hall. You simply couldn’t focus on what was being said, your attention consumed by tracking every movement of the mother and child. You can’t fathom why nobody was reacting to them, what could have possibly happened that would have humans and demons living side by side.

AS you stride through the dark halls of the temple, looking for some room with scriptures or something to learn from, you realize how constricting the robes are. You can hardly take a full stride without getting caught in them. If you were to fight in these, they’d surely shred apart within seconds. Nothing at all like the smart fiber combat clothing you would wear out on the field. You’ll have to find something better soon.

You find a small study in the back of the temple, probably Mother Margery’s personal one, but on the corner of the table you see what appears to be the holy book. You snatch it up and start flipping through as fast as you can trying to absorb the information from it. The vast majority of it reads like a shitty fantasy novel, as if it were pulled from thin air.

But the timing with the Dragon’s arrival coincides with the arrival of the demons. In the back of the book is a collection of information, among which is a map of Lady Lyrra’s retreat. It perfectly follows the retreat UNAAF was taking before you were betrayed, all the way behind the Annihilation Wall. Rather than calling it such though, it is marked as the Dragon’s Gate, and the inside is roughly labelled Lyr, with the Sea marked in the center.

This place is not what it should be. Inside the Annihilation Wall is a city to rival any of the last century, a new eden on Earth, made by human hands. You’ve been there, you went on a publicity campaign through the streets of refugees and watched them beg you to fight back the demons so they could survive in peace. It was not this backwater hell pit of ignorance and demon fraternization.

Then you hear someone shout in the main hall.

>Stay, continue searching for information in the book
>Return to the hall and intervene
>Other

By the way who betrayed us and how exactly? It keeps being mentiones and i've been wondering this, waiting for the answer to come in story but it still hasn't been answered so i'll just ask directly.
>>
>>30961042

Take the book with us and go check out the shout.
>>
>>30961107
You're rather certain you got in a fight with someone, while heavily poisoned which is odd because you're immune to most every poison, and they got the drop on you. They blew half your head off and took the memories with them. But it was a severe betrayal, you know that much.
>>
>>30961107
You need to re-stabilize your contracts to reconstruct the memories. But there might be other ways of determining what happened.

The Book is just a "shitty novel".
>>
So, our ex-lover betrayed us due to being promised power/peace from the Dragon, and was given a poison strong enough from the Dragon to do the deed?
>>
>>30961380
woah, you just jumped to, like, seven conclusions, or something.
>>
>>30961380
Hopefully we didn't give her a personal reason to do so, if that was what happened.

Lauren would never betray you. It is utterly and completely unthinkable. You were nearly each other's entire lives.

Someone else betrayed you.

You drop the book back to the table and run back to the main hall. Most of the villagers are scattered to the sides of the hall. A large man, a farmer perhaps, is in the center. He has his chest puffed up, he’s cracking his knuckles, and leering down at the person crumpled on the floor. “Your kind don’t deserve to be here, you’re not human, and the Dragon protects humans. Scum,” he spits at the wolf creature.

“Mr. Blackhorn!” Isabella shouts as loud as she can from the podium. “This is a place of worship. Leave immediately!”

“You’re too weak Sister, her kind don’t belong in here and you know it,” the brute says, pointing at the crumpled demon on the floor. The child is holding back tears and balling up his fists.

Isabella nearly opens her mouth again, but the demon speaks up first, “It’s fine. I’m used to it. We’ll just be going now,” she says as she gets back to her feet. She hangs her head and starts walking out. You can see the bruise on her face already forming. Isabella is staring at you, hoping for you to do something.

Your eyes open wide as you catch the wolf creatures scent again. There’s something different about her, she’s resonating more with you. Perhaps the ceremony actually did something, some shred of actual knowledge buried under the superstition and passed down from the Dragon’s true teachings. You can sense her soul ever so slightly now, as you can everyone else in the room.

She is not a demon. It’s true that she is not a pure human, but she is not a demon. You know exactly what she is, your replacement.

Division Seven was essentially a division of human prototypes. The scientists tried everything they could, found what worked, and through you into the field. Most of your brothers and sisters developed incurable diseases which they succumbed to. Other’s lost the battle of egos and became rampaging monsters you had to kill, no matter how long you had known them. Binding a demon to the human soul was strong, incredibly so, but it was unreliable. Your power a mere fluke.

They needed something reliable, they needed Division Eight, so they looked into binding a human to another. At first it failed, but mixing in a third soul could stabilize it. And this gave birth to a new breed of soldier, with the strength of ten men each, at a cost of their physical humanity.

She’s more human than you are, but still born and raised for war. She had gotten out, found a normal life. And is now being abused for it as she tries to raise her child.

The kid stops next to you. “You’re an elf right? Blessed by the Dragon? Do something!”

Gotta call it here, I'm really late for my thing. Can someone else archive?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on everything so far, but I won't be back for about three hours, aside from a phone.

Hope you enjoyed. Next thread Sunday?

Not only is she a comrade of sorts, even the priest is looking at us to do something. Get that guy to back down and throw him out if he doesn't.

Thanks for the thread. I wonder what Divisions One through Six were.

Thanks for running Gabriel. Just a few questions.

How common were demons that could use logic and reason?

Was magic a thing?

Did other nations develop wizards instead of tech?

Is there only 1 dragon or were there more?

But yeah this quest is very interesting. Can't wait for more.
>>
Damn it, and here I was hoping to be a racist, not a harbinger of the downtrodden.
>>
>>30962268
Hard to tell, estimates are at about 60% based on threat, which is a bit deceptive because the remaining 35% is the non-sapient Alphas, about 30% by mass

Magic is not a thing, but "Holy shit, how is that science?" is. Such as viral poisons that break into your brain and eat specific neurotransmitters and such to send you into a frenzy, or make you incredibly compliant, and which will make a deposit in your ocular nerve which triggers them all to activate when a specific electromagnetic pulse is detected.

Magic is not a thing, so there are no wizards.

There is only the one dragon.

My deepest thanks

Unless I accidentally contradicted myself, Division Six is entirely KIA. You and the other survivors are now referred to as Division Seven. The other five are a secret for now, because I may or may not use them.

Let's consider the pros and cons of being a Racist

Cons :
You are objectively wrong. (wouldn't be racist if you were just attacking a scum species)
Society is against it as a whole (if society agrees, then it's not racist it's just the state of affairs)
It's bad motivation for anything because of the above
It doesn't achieve anything
It's edgy as shit

Pros
It's novel
It's edgy as shit

Hmm, I wonder why more quests don't let you be an unabashed racist.
>>
>>30962785
If it's any consolation, you'll probably find the elves to be annoying pricks while every else lauds how awesome they are.

If I write them correctly anyways.

so currently we have a old as f=== character that was created to fight as a supper soldier to fight the demons. who is based with a decision that gives us the option to help someone like us, which may cause us to be the harbringer for the next war, resistance movement, ect... due to being against racism, injustice overall, so so.
And we have someone who is a priest that reminds us of our old love. Who may follow us if we stand out against this injustice. and has helped us.

did i miss something.

Im enjoying this so far

>>30964808
>And we have someone who is a priest that reminds us of our old love. Who may follow us if we stand out against this injustice. and has helped us

No, stop right there.
>>
>>30964808
You missed the whole REVENGE issue. Someone ripped your head off and tossed you in bizzarro world, and that's a paddlin'

Getting ripped out of your nice comfy life with your wife is not something you wanted to happen.
>>
>>30964956
didnt notice that, out of curiosity what is the highest tech we have seen besides the pipe we saw.
>>
>>30965049
Discounting yourself for obvious reasons, I suppose it would be the ship? Disregarding the description because I'd probably screw it all up and the quest isn't about sailing anyways, it was a well optimized sailing design, but it was still wood+hemp+tar.

You haven't gone exploring the village yet though, you haven't seen all that much.

Don't forget that the pipe itself isn't the revelation, it's that idea that it takes a hell of a lot of equipment to make that kind of mass produced pipe, and you're not exactly stumbling over smoke belching factories.
>>
>>30965116
is it bad that the two conclusions that i draw from that are that either the church is very well funded by the dragon people or that we are a few hundred years in the future, based off the observation that the pipe is rusted, the dragons sapposidly won the war, and the fact that we were pulled out of the see as a very old man.
