>Don't call it a comeback, we've been here for years
Somewhere in a small wood and straw hut, there stands in the doorway a child with bare feet and only tattered rags for clothing. They look into the dark hovel, and see before them a grim sight, but a reminder of the nature of the world.

Your father has passed. The eating disease has taken him, like many others. No cure, no treatment, only desperate breath and pain. The tears in your eyes would flow furiously now, if you hadn't used them all over the past two years, watching the man who raised you turn from a pillar of strength, to a shriveled and hollow shell of his former self. You turn away, grabbing your small burlap sack and tossing it over your shoulder.

As you exit the hut, you look east. A shining city, made of white stone and bustling with people. Until he took ill, your father worked the land surrounding this place, growing the crops and breeding livestock. But he was nothing more than a cog in the mill of this world, easily replaced. You refuse to suffer the same fate as him. You will be remembered, loved or hated, but remembered. You've little money, but determination is as good a currency as any gold or silver coins. It's time to begin your journey.

B) Wander the village
C) Head down to the fields

You head into the village proper, a crowd of feeble huts made of wood and straw, hoping to obtain something worthwhile from your neighbors.

You run into a woman, feeding a babe at the breast as she watches the sky. When she notices you, she smiles. However, when she sees the grim expression on your face, she understands immediately what has happened, and what you intend to do.

"I'm sorry you must go through this. And I wish you would stay here, where it's safe. But I knew your father, and if you're like him, you won't change your mind now." She stands, still holding the child to her teet, and opens the door to her home for you. "Come in for a moment. I'll give you a little something, and you can wash your face. If you're going out into the world, at least show the gods your face, so they know you."

You follow her in. She sets the babe down in a basket, where it begins cooing and writhing about. She points you to a basin of water, and heads over to a small box. You look at the basin. Your face is indeed filthy. So covered in dirt so as to obscure it, in fact. You reach in with your hands and scoop out some water. After a minute or so, your look back into the water to see thick mud gathered there, but at least your face and hair are clean. You look over to a shattered mirror and inspect your face.

A) You are a boy

You run your wet hand through your hair, pulling it back on your head. Your features are really starting to come in, and even you can see the resemblance to your father. You can't quite recall how old you are, but it's more than ten by now.

You turn back to the woman. She holds out a small cloth with a few things on it. "It's not much, but it should help you nonetheless. If you don't know where you want to go, you should try the city. At least you might meet someone who can point you in the right direction, since not a one of us out here know how to read a map. Oh, and don't even think about going out into the wild without something to protect yourself. The wolves won't attack during summer, but bandits are going to start coming down from the mountain soon." You take the items she gives you and tie them up in your sack. When you look back up, she places her hands on either side of your head and leaves a kiss on your forehead. "May the gods, all of them, watch you."

You step back outside. It'll be noon soon, and you still aren't sure what to do next.

Illiteracy is quite common among most people, as there are no establishments of primary education. However, anyone with a job that requires keeping records would know how to read and count much higher than you, so there are plenty of people who could help you. And all the merchants would be in town at this time.

You head down to the fields, crossing a small creek along the way.

When you arrive, many of the workers are still tending the crops. Wheat, potatoes and barley stretch as far as the eye can see. You slide down the muddy slope to the wheat field, and walk around, looking for anything useful. You scan the mud as you walk, trying not to disturb the workers. Finally, you spot something shiny. You hurry over and look at it.

It appears to be a small pocket knife, complete with a leather sheath. It's only about three inches long, but it could still be quite useful. You stow it away.

You approach the workers in the field. They are hard at work, slaving beneath the hot sun. They don't seem too upset by this, but you suppose it's just an ordinary day for them. One of them recognizes you, and ask how your father is feeling. You tell them what happened, and they hold a moment of silence for you. After, you explain that you plan to leave town and make a name for yourself. This gets a laugh out of a few of them, but they are kind enough to toss a few things your way.

You obtain: 5 silver, Biscuit x10

One of the workers tells you that his own brother left to cross the Red Sand River not a year ago, to try his luck in the free cities. It's a dangerous place, where men live and die by the sword, but if you're fortunate you can amass much there. With some help, you figure out which way is east, the direction to the river. This might be a possible place to start.

With all your immediate preparations done, you decide to make for the city.

A dirt road leads into town, a wide path that carts travel by almost daily. When you arrive at the gate, two kindly men in robes and chainmail greet you, checking your sack before they allow you in.

You have never been inside the walls before. The buildings here look very sturdy, brick glistening in the morning sunlight as people in fine clothes wander about. The greatest landmark is a tall, mighty palace high on a hill. From what you've heard, people go there to pledge themselves to the gods. You yourself lack much direction, simply following the flow of people until you come to a large are near the center of town. There is a large fountain here, surrounded by many people. You approach and peer into the water, amazed at how clear it is. There also appear to be old copper coins at the bottom, but you wouldn't be able to reach them without jumping in, and you suspect that would be frowned upon. You hear a small commotion over to the side, and look to see what the cause is.

A few yards away, three young boys, perhaps a few years younger than you, stand looking cross at two girls. One of them is small, crying into a stuffed rabbit, and the other, dressed in a vibrant robe of white and yellow, stands in front of her, facing off against the boys. She holds a wooden playsword, similar to one you had long ago.

You feel a small hand shove you aside, and look down to see the white robed girl. She is quite fair skinned, likely never having gotten truly messy in her life. Her hair is red and tied into a neat tail.

"Stand back, gentle citizen. These pups are no match for the sword 'Amarok'! One swing of my mighty blade can fell even the mightiest stone tree! Even though it's made of wood!"

One of them makes to swing at you, but when you catch his balled fist in your hand, the spine leaks right out of him. The three of them turn tail and run, pledging to come back. You turn back to the girls.

"That was brave of you, but foolish. An untrained civilian like you will only get hurt standing up to thugs like that." The girl pretends to whirl her sword around, and slides it into an invisible sheath. She then turns and kneels down by the smaller girl, comforting her with soft words and pats on the back.

"Forgive my poor manners, sir. I am Annalise, warrior of light! It is my mission to guard the streets of this town, Lumena, from the seedy crooks and cut-throats who would do harm to its people. That girl was merely a victim, teased for her love of her familiar, the white rabbit. I intervened, but do not thank me. For humility is the duty of my house."

She begins a long, rather rehearsed explanation of herself as a hero who defends the innocent from the encroaching darkness of the world. It's quite repetitive, and doesn't really get to the point. She does explain that her older brother is also a hero of the light, but not her sisters who 'only want to put on silly dresses and kiss boys." You ask her about anyone in town who can teach you useful skills.

"The palace up there is where people pledge themselves to light, like I did. But someone as meager as you would never be able to do that. Why you've not even got proper shoes! Who ever heard of a hero who didn't have shoes? I've got shoes. Loads of them. But my father and brother did say that there are plenty of people who they think are quite strong. If we had a map, I could show you where to find them, but you must promise to keep it a secret from villains."

You ask her to show you to the palace. She fidgets for a moment, then swallows and takes a breath. She agrees to show you out of kindness, and begins leading you up toward the hill. Some people give you odd looks along the way, likely due to how messy you are by comparison. The buildings and people only get fancier as you ascend, too.

You turn a corner and spot the gates to the palace. If you didn't know better, you'd say they were made of gold. A large man in shining armor stands sentinel before them, with an enormous sword on his back. He stares straight ahead, never so much as blinking. Annalise slowly approaches him, shaking a bit as she walks. Something seems to be spooking her.

"I-i'm here to sh-show this boy the inside of the p-p-palace. Please stand aside Oslo." The armored man turns his gaze down at her. She shrinks back and away from him. He then turns to you. His stare is cold and hard as iron.

You greet the armored man politely, introducing yourself. He doesn't say anything in response. After a few moments staring at you, he turns away and steps aside. The gate swings open behind him, slowly, creaking on its hinges. Annalise dashes past him, making a beeline for the wooden doors. You follow.

Inside you find a chapel, tall and decorated with gold chandeliers and stained glass windows depicting impressive scenes. Annalise seems fascinated with one in particular, that seems to be a wolf slaying a beast with a sword in its mouth.

Annalise runs up and kneels before a large golden depiction of the sun against the far wall. She bows her head, commanding you to offer yourself as well, before meeting any of the clergy.

"Annalise! It's so good to see you again!" You open your eyes and turn around. A woman in white robes has appeared out of nowhere. She is well middle aged, and stands tall as an oak. Something about her commands respect, and yet her smile is gentle and warm. Annalise stands and runs over to her, wrapping her thing arms around her waist in a hug.

"And who is this young man you've brought with you?" Before you have a chance to respond, Annalise speaks for you.

"He's a commoner from the town. He's quite brave, but he's not as brave as brother. I think he secretly wants me to train him. Please tell him he's not cut out for the cloth so he can move on." The woman approaches you and bends slightly to meet you at eye level, asking you why you've come.

"Well, I'm the bishop here. I've only been bishop for a few years, but I'm trying very hard to live up to my predecessor. This palace is the home to those who pledge themselves to the light, and work to keep the world safe from all sorts of creatures. Our numbers are few however, since many of us were lost over two decades ago. If you'd like to look around, I'm sure Annalise would love to guide you." You turn back to Annalise.

With Annalise, you explore the old halls of the palace. Everything here speaks of ancient times, from the decorations to the very stones from which it was built. You see a vast courtyard full of flowers, a mess hall with dozens of tough looking men and women, and even a grand ballroom. Finally, Annalise brings you to a library.

"Here is where they amass all the knowledge the church has. There's books about everything. I like to read some of them, but most of the best ones are too hard. They're written in verse, so only people ho are part of the church can read them."

Annalise doesn't seem keen on entering the yard. She looks out toward a man who stands on the other end. He is a bit wrinkled, and his hair is the color of pepper. Before he has a chance to stand, you ask about training. He turns his face to show his other ear. "You mind speaking up? It sounded like you said you want to train with us."

You repeat yourself.

"See, that's what it sounded like you said. Two problems though. The first one is that you aren't a part of the church, and only people who are are allowed to train and live in the palace. The second is that you're a skinny little grasshopper who couldn't slice a tomato cleanly, let alone fight an orc. If you want to be a trained thug, go north or west. This is a place for holy men."

He stands tall and turns to face you head on. It's odd, with his eyes shut, but it still feels as though he is scanning you somehow.

"Fine. Training starts now." He reaches behind him and picks up one of the sabers, drawing it from the sheath and tossing it on the ground before you. He then reaches into his pocket and produces a small wooden needle that looks like a toothpick.

"We'll duel with these. Training ends when you cut me, or you can't fight anymore." One of the people nearby tries to convince him not to continue, but he ignores them, popping the toothpick into his mouth.

You pick up the saber and hold it in both hands. The weight is less than you were expecting, and yet having to rely on the single cutting edge means you can't just swing wildly.

You engage him, swinging the saber at his leg to maximize your chances. You are shocked to see him hop over the attack from a standstill. Despite this, you swing again, aiming for his stomach. He quickly steps back, avoiding the blade by less than an inch. You press the assault, looking for any sort of opening. His age betrays his agility, however. He is more spry than anyone you've ever met, almost as if he sees the attacks before you decide on them yourself.

As you lunge forward with the saber, he steps to one side. This seems to be your chance to claim victory. You bring the blade back around, going for his torso. Seeing that he is had, he stops and reaches his hand out to catch the blade. It lands in the palm of his hand and stops. You drag the blade away, having successfully used the rules in your favor. When you try to assert your win, however, he shows you his palm. It is completely unharmed.

"At the very least, you are tenacious if not brave. I admire that much about you, kid. Lose knowing that you never actually had a chance."

Suddenly he spits the toothpick from his mouth. It flies at your face, forcing you to shut your eyes or else lose one of them. This is followed by a sudden and blunt pain in your stomach. You look down through blurry vision to see that the old man has buried his fest in your gut, just below your ribs. Your lungs weaken, and you fall over, unable to draw any strength. You watch him pick his blade back up, and instruct the others to escort you out of the palace, just as your awareness fades away.

When you awake, you are outside the palace gates. You shake your head to clear away the fuzziness, and look up at the gate. The same armored man stands watch, not once looking at you. When you stand, you notice something tucked into your clenched hand. A Gold coin with the sun's face pressed into it.

You turn away from the palace and head back into the city proper. Things are quiet at night. There are no people roaming the street son business; everyone out and about seems bent on getting wherever they're going quickly and without incident. Nobody so much as looks at you twice. Your head still hurts a bit, but you know you must find some place to stay for the time being. You have 2 Gold and 19 Silver, which is more than enough for an inn, but perhaps you should save for an emergency.

You search for some place that seems warm and dry. After nearly two hours, you come across a small alley, where an orange light seems to be pouring out. You cautiously enter, trying to see the source in the dark. Down a short flight of stairs you enter a square sort of tin plaza. Dirty and disheveled folks seem to be gathered here, circling a bonfire. They are mostly quiet, though some do speak to one another. As you inch closer, one of them sees you. He is a wrinkled old prune with a snow white beard, or it would be were it not full of dirt. He smiles and welcomes you.

"You're a thin young thing, eh? You must be cold. We've got no food, sadly, but you're welcome to keep warm through the night with us. Seems like it'll be a cold one."

You turn to the kind man and ask about the group, and what they're doing here.

"Well, let's just say we're less than desirable folks in these parts. They are mighty kind in this city, most of the time, but we'd rather not draw too much attention. We're only passing through on the way to the mountains to the west, so we'd like to avoid any trouble." Something about the way he talks seems odd, but he doesn't show any signs of hostility. You tell him your own story, and he finds it entertaining. "That's an admirable way to live, indeed. I wish we could help you more, but we have very little to spare. If you'd like, you're welcome to sleep here tonight, unless you have somewhere you'd rather be.

"You want to join the church? What, you tired of freedom at your age? Get up when the verse says. Eat when the verse says. Pray, wash, train, shit when the verse says. That's all they do up on that hill. Although, they are a pretty tight knit group. That trust isn't something you just scoff at. If it's power you want kid, that big hunk of muscle is the man you want. He's been in more fights than he's had meals." The old man points a wrinkled thumb at the large man in the distance. "Ah, but that's asking a lot of a kid your age. If you want a sure thing, north is the way for you. Deep in the forest, the Rangers live and work. Now those are some men who know how to spill blood. Thousands of years dedicated to it, you know. Some say since the Starstorm itself." You think on this for a minute. North, the rangers. East, the Bravos. Here, the Clergy. You awake some time after dawn. The sun doesn't reach into the small plaza properly. You rub your eyes and look around. The entire place is empty, save for the remains of the bonfire. The city is awake around you, bustling with life. You are left alone again. Somewhere in the distance, you hear children shouting, but it only seems like rowdy boys at play. He is dressed in colorful clothes and sandals, as well as a bandanna on his head. In each hand he holds a wooden sword, but true training tools. "...justice! With my holy sword I will banish you beyond the city walls! What do you say to that, you big stupid, stupid?" Annalise taunts him as she brandishes her sword. The boy still does not move, only watching her movements carefully.

This has a reverse effect, angering Annalise to the point that she blindly rushes in. She brings her sword down over his head, but it is swatted aside by the sword in his left hand. You take a moment to explain that you aren't related to Annalise, only interested in her well being in general. Leon seems to understand well enough.

You ask him about himself, which he seems shy about. He removes his bandanna to reveal a head of curly black hair, which he runs his fingers through as he speaks.

"I'm just an orphan from the northern territory. The Rangers picked me up on their usual patrol through the towns, and raised me. They taught me swords and some archery, but I'm not any good at bending a bow, really. My teacher brought me here to learn something about the world, but as soon as I turned my back he went running off to some tavern. I've been looking for him all morning, but I really don't think I'll find him. Still, it's something to do."

"Yeah, the Rangers like to use two blade to fight. We've been doing it for thousands of years. We use axes and chakram too, but I like swords better. My teacher says that the people here copied our style a long time ago and turned it into a weaker version, but I don't know. Hey, if you join the rangers you could learn to fight like me too! Oh, but you don't have any way to get up north do you. Hm."

Eventually, a few hours go by with no luck. Leon stops to have a seat, and you join him.

"I really appreciate it, but I've taken up your time. Here, I'll give you something as thanks. Hold out your hand." Leon stands up and rummages through his pocket. He places in your hand a small round object.

"It's a compass. The Rangers use them. It will tell you which way is North, see if you hold it out flat, that red arrow always points to the North. It'll help you avoid getting lost. Anyway, I should get going. I hope I see you again sometime."

Leon hurries away, leaving you alone again. This is starting to become a theme. Night is nearing again, and you've still not decided what you're going to do. Still, you've got offers now. Perhaps it's time to turn in for the night.

You decide to spend a little more time walking around town and exploring. The palace makes for a handy beacon to avoid getting lost. You discover many things about the town on your walk. The people here seem generally kind, but drunks and gossips are the same as anywhere else. Eventually, your wandering brings you to a large house near the center of town. It's an impressive dwelling, made of cleaner stone than most of the ones around it. Light emerges from inside, and you can smell food cooking. It's captivating in its quiet charm. After taking it in for a moment, you decide to turn and move on.

Just as you are about to look away from the house, however, you notice something in the corner of your eye. You look back and see a thin girl with red hair tied into a lovely bun. Something about her seems very familiar. You soon realize that she is the spitting image of Annalise, although she doesn't look quite the same without her sword and thick robes. A voice calls from inside the house, and the girl rushes toward the door.

Before you can say anything more, the front door of the house opens up, and a woman who bears resemblance to Annalise steps out.

You follow Annalise and her mother into the house. Something about the place is humbling, you think.

Inside you find a warm parlor, decorated with many interesting looking object from swords to paintings to small trinkets. Annalise's mother motions for you to have a seat on a small sofa in the center of the room, and all three of you sit down. As the both of them sit, you start to notice how lovely the grown woman looks, with her long red hair and slender figure. You find it somewhat hard to believe such a woman could have had so many children, but then her hips do somewhat corroborate the story. Part of you wonders if Annalise will look the same in her maturity.

She motions to a glass bowl full of small candies, offering one to you. .

You take one of the candies and slip it into your pocket, thanking her. She gives you a bit of an odd look, but makes no comment. Instead she thanks you for being kind to Annalise.

"She's a handful, and she's not very good at making friends, especially because of her father's legacy. Both he and my son are away on business, and I'm stuck here in this house trying not to die of boredom. Such is the life of a mother, I suppose. Oh! I'm forgetting all about Annalise. It's time for practice dear." She turns to Annalise and points her to a large harp in the corner of the room. A small war ensues, wherein Annalise whines and kicks, loudly expressing her disdain for the instrument, and her mother firmly shoves her into it anyway.

"A friend of ours suggested we give her a creative outlet, to vent some of the energy she has. So far I don't think it's worked, but at the very least she's starting to improve. Go on and play for your friend, sweetheart."

You compliment Annalise's ability, and ask to hear her perform. She blushes and kicks in her seat, then closes her eyes. After a deep breath, she stretches her arms and fingers out and begins plucking at the strings.

Having never heard one of these before, you aren't entirely sure how it's meant to sound, but the tones leaping off of the strings are nice. The rhythm feels strange, slowing down and picking up seemingly at random. At one point you find yourself sort of swaying along with the music.

Annalise keeps her eyes closed the entire time, perhaps trying to focus on the task. Her mother sits with her hands in her lap, eyes shut and listening carefully to each note. At the end of the song, Annalise drops her arms to her side and slouches in her seat.

"There, I played a silly song for you. Now are you happy?"

"It's a silly instrument for dumb girls. Can I go outside and play now?" Annalise continues to fidget. Her mother forces her to continue playing, what are apparently practice songs. In the meantime, she speaks to you.

"You don't look like you're from around here. Tell me about yourself." You dole out the usual introduction and explanation. "I see. Well the church is certainly a place to look into, but I don't suggest going there halfheartedly. It takes a lot of dedication to join the clergy. At least, more than I had when I did. To be honest, when I took up the cloth I was only doing it for love of my husband. In time though, I truly gave myself over to the light. Of course, I'll still put my husband and children before anything, even the gods."

The two of you chat about nothing in particular as Annalise plays. At one point she tries to stop, but is quickly corrected. Eventually, Annalise's mother brings up something odd.

"You know, you do sort of remind me of my son when he was younger. And you have the same sort of strong posture my husband had. Hm. I think I've got something that might help you." She stands and exits the room. As soon as she is out of earshot, Annalise ceases playing and allows herself to fall out of her chair dramatically. You can't help but laugh. When her mother returns, she sets a pair of old boots on the table.

"They were my son's long ago. You'd probably outgrow them in a year, especially if you grow as fast as he did. But they are warm and sturdy. Go on, put them on."

Having never worn shoes before, it's odd to have your feet contained within them, but you feel quite refined by wearing them. You stand and move around a bit to get a feeling for them.

You accept her invitation, much to her delight. The rest of the evening goes by in a flash. You sit down to dinner with Annalise's family, including her sisters Annabelle, Anita and Anastasia. Annalise mentions that her father was the one who named her and her siblings, hence the lack of creativity. You do your best not to laugh. On the whole, Annalise's sisters are refined ladies to the point you feel quite uncomfortable sitting at the same table as them. They speak and eat so gracefully, they're almost like dolls. They do seem very kind though, doting on you and complimenting you on your looks.

After dinner, the three of them head out for the evening, leaving you alone with Annalise, her mother, and the housemaid. As the dishes are cleared away, Annalise's mother proposes a bath for you. As much as you try to decline, she completely ignores you.

Annalise leads you down a few hallways and to a rather large room, tiled in white marble with a great basin in the center. There are all sorts of odd implements you've never seen before, and they all look rather uncomfortable to use. Annalise points at a loop and chain that open and seal the flow of water. She also shows you what you believe are towels and some sort of slippery chunk of something. You're used to washing with soapstone, so this thing which shares the name is a bit alien. After all this, she leaves the room without looking back. You are left alone to figure out this odd chamber.

After about twenty minutes, you finally manage to get everything ready and jump in the tub. Layers upon layers of dirt peel off of you into the water, browning it. The fragrant stone starts to make you smell of flowers, and the hot water is perhaps the most relaxing thing you've ever tried. You nearly fall asleep in it.

Eventually there is a knock at the door and Annalise's mother tosses in a pile of clothes for you to change into. Again, your protests fall on deaf ears. You try to relax again, but the situation simply won't allow for it. When you finally do emerge from the water, you feel more at ease and refreshed than ever before. The towel is another challenge to figure out, and you settle on patting your body down with it until it seems sufficiently dry. After all this, you slip into some rather loose fitting clothes, all white with yellow trim, leaving you tattered rags behind. A you reach for the door knob, you think you hear light footsteps moving away from the door. When you open it, you think you see something disappear behind a corner, but if it truly was there it was only for a split second.

Eventually Annalise' mother finds you and shows you to your room. It's bigger than your hut, but just about as bare. The only things in is are a bed, a small chest for clothes, and a writing desk. She bids you goodnight, and leaves you to yourself.

The bishop leads by reading from the verse aloud. During, most people familiar with the verse will recite alongside her, but it's not required. You also inquire about her armor and weapon.

"Aha, I suppose it might look odd. You see, though I do stay home while my husband is away, I am still a warrior of the church. I train daily to keep myself in top form, and should the city come under attack I will be part of the defending legion. This sword is actually my husbands. When he goes away, we trade blades as a sort of promise that he'll come home safely."

The walk to the palace is long, and you are quickly joined by others headed the same way. Everyone wears white and gold robes today, and you do notice some wearing armor of all kinds. Somewhere in the distance, great bells call the townspeople together, ringing out across the town. You seem to recall hearing them before, during winter when the mornings are especially quiet, but you never knew this is what they meant. You make it to the palace all together, and sit between Annalise and he mother as the bishop, the same dark haired woman from before, reads from a large and ancient looking book. The voices of the other people in the chapel ring out in a sort of beautiful song. You close your eyes and listen, unable to comprehend the words spoken. Occasionally you glance at Annalise, who appears to only know some of the words, but she speaks them with great passion and conviction.

The service lasts two hours, and when it is over your knees and rear are sore from stillness. The whole lot of you leave the palace, but Annalise's mother as well as her sisters stop to speak to the bishop before you go. Behind the bishop stands the old man who gave you a trouncing two days ago, but he doesn't seem to notice you

As you wait around, you feel a tug on your sleeve. Annalise is behind you, smiling slyly.

"Come on, if we go now we can get away without my mom noticing. I want to patrol the city, but if we wait too long my mom will make us spend all day talking to old people."

The two of you sneak away in the crowd, and head into town. Annalise is true to her nimble nature, and has to slow down her pace just so you are able to keep up. You get to the market, and she claims to want to pick up her sword, which is hidden away behind the candy store.

"Come on, I'll show you how to climb like my brother taught me." You look up at the buildings here, and the cobblestone floor below. One slip is a broken skull. It makes you understandably nervous, as you don't have the dexterity Annalise possesses.

Nah, it's correct. As in gave us room and board, but not really, she just gave us a bed to sleep in and roof to sleep under.

You gather your courage and follow Annalise as she demonstrates the proper way to limb the sides of buildings. She doesn't seem to understand the difficulty you have when you start, but by some miracle you make ti to the top of the building alive. She gives you a minute to rest and catch your breath.

"Good job! Now we have to jump across the roofs to get to my sword, cmon!"

Fuck it, might as well now.

I'm also wondering why she has her sword there
I'm guessing her mom doesn't want her playing with swords, maybe?

Most likely, but I want our character to find out by asking.

You follow Annalise, watching her leap like a cat from roof to roof. As she hits the other side, she often does a small somersault. She explains that this makes it less likely you'll hurt yourself, and looks cool. You try to do it as well, but after bumping your shoulder a few times, you decide it's better to deal with tingly feet. On the way, you ask why she keeps her sword so far from home.

"I like to hide it where nobody else can find it. If someone saw my sword, they'd be overcome by greed and steal ti from me. It's all because of my dad. He doesn't want me or my sisters to get hurt, so he won't let us train with swords or armor or anything fun. He only lets my sisters practice with bows, but I'm too small to bend one properly, so I just ave to sit at home and wear silly dresses and read dusty old books. That's why I made my own sword, and I guard the city in secret. You can't tell, okay!"

The two of you finally stop, and slide down a drainpipe into a narrow alley behind a store. Annalise digs through some rubbish and retrieves her wooden playsword.

"Ah, Amarok. With you at my side I feel whole again." She whirls the sword around, making whooshing sounds, and slides the sword into its invisible home again. "I don't have an extra sword, but if we find some wood I can make you one. Now let's go stop some criminals!"

In an attempt to keep Annalise from getting another bloody nose, you suggest instead that she teach you some of the sword techniques she knows. This perks her up more than you would have expected, and she bashfully agrees. The two of you head to a nearby plaza, so that you will have more room to move. Annalise finds a rather thick looking stick on the ground a tosses it to you, insisting you use it to practice before you move up and advance to a real wooden sword.

"The first thing you do, is um.. spread your legs apart. Then make sure your shoulders are stiff, and your back is bent a little. Then you just put your right hand under your left hand like this, that way you have more reach when you let go of one and use the sword one-handed. Now just try swinging like that!"

You follow Annalise's instructions to the letter. Immediately you feel awkward. Something about this way of moving feels forced. You ask Annalise if this is really the best technique, and she bats you on the shoulder with her sword.

"I'm the master now, so don't question me! Now stand on your tip-toes, that way you can leap out of the way if danger approaches. And make sure to grip the handle as tight as you can, so it won't slip!" You continue to do as Annalise says, exhausting yourself quickly with numerous sword swings. Eventually she agrees to give you a break, and runs off to fetch a snack. You are left to stand by the plaza fountain, watching the cool water run down the sides of the stone pillar.

As you look around, you notice something colorful pass through the market crowd. You watch for a moment, and soon realize it's Leon. He is alone again today, with his training swords tucked away. He seems to be busily looking for something as usual.

I want him to join in the practice, since he is the own with actual training, he could give us (and maybe Annalise some tips), maybe patch things up between the two, if Annalise disagrees, we can have them have a rematch and have Leon knock some sense into her.

You stand and shout across the plaza to Leon. He perks up, and eventually notices you waving. He strides over with a smile, patting you roughly on the shoulder when you meet.

"It's good to see you again friend. You look like a coin right out of the mint! What happened to you?" You tell him about finding Annalise's house, and the kindness of her family. "You're kidding me? The people who raised that little yapping dog were nice enough to give you food and clothes? I guess you can't always judge a tree by its fruit."

"I've still yet to find my teacher, but I've basically checked all the taverns in town, and whoring isn't allowed in this city so there's no chance of that. Honestly, I'm half way to just riding home by myself." You mention your sword training with Annalise, and he cheers up. "Hey, that's really neat. Show me what you've got so far."

You warn Leon that you haven't gotten much practice, and fall into the stance Annalise taught you, taking a few practice swings.

Leon begins chuckling and snorting under his breath. You ask him what's so funny, and he explains how silly you look, on top of how easy it would be for someone to knock you over and skewer you as you are. You ask him for some corrections.

"Well we don't much use longswords in the north, but try this." Leon corrects your stance and your grip, to the point that it feels much more natural. Swinging the sword in this way feels much better, despite your training weapon being a mere stick. Leon continues to coach you for a while, until Annalise returns. She holds two cups of pudding in her hands, but her face looks far from cheerful.

"Why is he here? Nobody wants some smelly notherner's help, go away! Leon scoffs and they lock eyes. There is tangible tension between them.

This and add that Leon needs help finding his master. Maybe we could get Analise a new friend.

You try your best to quell the foul energy between them. Annalise continues to remark on his odor and his clothes, while Leon picks on her size and poor skill. It takes some doing, but you finally manage to defuse the situation, and convince Annalise to let Leon tag along with you on patrol, promising Leon that this will make it even easier to find his teacher the two agree, and shake hands as a symbol of peace. With that, the three of you head to the downtown area to scour the watering holes again. Annalise insists on leading the way, leaving you to bring up the rear with Leon.

As much as you wanted things to go peacefully, trouble strikes in the form of a young man, when Annalise spots him trying to pry open a window down an alleyway.

"Look! A miscreant! I've never actually seen someone do crimes before, we have to go stop him!" Annalise starts running toward the alley.

You and Leon chase after her, hoping to stop her from getting beaten up again. Down the alley, Annalise confronts the man, a dirty and scrawny looking thing with a large hunting knife which he uses to pry the window open. Upon seeing you, he waves you away, threatening harm if you don't all disperse. Leon is quick to try and comply, but Annalise stands firm.

"If you two want to run then be my guest, but I am a proud warrior, and I won't allow evil to go unpunished in this city! En guarde, you scoundrel!" Annalise readies her playsword, confident in her ability to defeat a grown man armed with a true blade. The young man spits on the ground, brandishing the knife.
