You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Giancarlo is in no way happy about his stepmother and siblings being sent away, and it looks like he's going to be going to Krassato along with Lisette and Chiara to watch out for them. And as for Elena, she's especially unhappy that she'll be separated from not only her parents but also her bodyguard Andreas.

Hopefully, Rana and Reya will be able to handle acting as his substitutes...

>Congratulations, you are once again an unruly WOLF!
>Wolves are cool and powerful... and also rather dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while wolves are really cool, they still don't count as people.

Lisette, Chiara and Giancarlo are leaving for Krassato while Luciana, Elena and Emilio go to Granache... but something about that is kind of bugging you.

"Why's he splitting you guys up like this?" you ask, turning to the Princesses.
"Hm?" Luciana replies, seemingly not having been paying attention.
"Your father, I mean. Why not just send everyone over to Granache? Your mother is Sir Gregory's little sister, and I doubt the King would mind either..."
"He's splitting up potential targets," Marianne replies. "I know it sounds cold, but there's a lower risk of losing everyone if they're in different countries."
"And Krassato and Granache are this country's strongest allies, so..." Reya says, shrugging.
"Oh," you nod. "I guess that makes sense."
"As for why Father's splitting us up in the way he is, I'm assuming it's because it would be less of a shock for the three of us if we're among friends and family in Granache," Luciana explains. "-We're- not particularly close to anyone in Krassato aside from Randolf, but Mother is at least friends with Giancarlo's in-laws."

Knowing Celestino, it makes sense that he'd try and fix a political marriage with an allied country like Krassato... you guess Giancarlo just got really lucky with who was chosen to be his wife.

"Chiara can't go anywhere without Mother, and it's less of a burden sending a baby like her to a place that she's not familiar with," Luciana says, "and Giancarlo's going to be with them so that should make things a lot easier."
"It feels odd to hear someone actually say that," Marianne sighs. "Your brother of all people making things easier for -anyone-..."
"Yes, well I never thought that I would ever be in a situation where I -wouldn't- be happy about going to Granache, but that's just how things are now," she replies with a bitter smile.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to-"
"No, I know you didn't mean anything by it," she shakes her head.

Great, now you're feeling guilty about being happy that she's coming back with you. Might as well change the subject...

"So are we still going to be eating dinner together?" Marianne asks. "I can understand if you don't want to..."
"No, that's still on if it's alright with you," Luciana replies. "I'd rather not upset Elena any more than she already is, anyways."
"Oh yeah, this'll be the last time she can eat with Andreas before we leave tomorrow," you say.
"Yes... I'm not looking forward to the inevitable crying fit," she sighs. "Or the one that's sure to come whenever Andreas's term as her bodyguard comes to an end."

And on that somber note, the four of you finally teach the door of your suite. Marianne and Luciana lurch past you once you open the door for you and pratically collapse on the couch while Reya simply leans on a nearby wall.

"Oh yeah," Reya says, snapping his fingers. "I guess I ought to go and tell Rana what the King said... do you mind if I step out for a bit, Princess?"
"No, that's fine," Luciana says, shaking her head. "Take as much time as you need, I'm not going anywhere for a while."

With a slight bow to Luciana, Reya leaves the room.

"So where are you going to be staying?" Marianne asks. "We have plenty of rooms in the castle but Sir Gregory mentioned he'd be willing to have you stay at his mansion..."
"Wherever Elena wants to, I guess," Luciana shrugs. "She gets nightmares and always sneaks into my room when she inevitably wakes up in the middle of the night so it's kind of a necessity that we stay in the same place," she sighs.
"I remember you mentioning that before," you say.
"Is there something in particular that she's afraid of?" Marianne asks. "I've had nightmares as well, but never to the extent that you say that Elena does."
"She refuses to tell me when I ask her about her dreams so I just gave up after a while," Luciana replies. "But I'm sure they're only going to get worse after everything that she's seen today..."

"Magma Leviathan?" she turns to you. "Yes, that one's part of a set, the other is Aqua Salamander... the creator of that spell had an odd sense of humor. The two spells can be used together, but I lack the skill needed to control the motions of more than one at a time," she sighs.

"Most of the spells I know are from grimoires like that," Luciana says. "Colossus Hold is another one that I learned from them... I suppose you can say that it's thanks in part to my hobbies that I'm still alive," she says with a sad smile. "Those spells tend to use up a lot of energy to use, however, and the incantations are overly long... and I'm sad to say that I lack the skill to alter the incantations without rendering the entire spell useless."
"So it's a tradeoff between doing all kinds of weird uncommon stuff and being able to cast quickly?" you ask.
"Not so much that," she replies, "it's just that I'm not exactly able to practice with them as much as I'd like while still keeping it a secret from Father."

Though this line of discussion clearly has Marianne uncomfortable, she seems to be trying to keep it to herself.

"If you told your father what you just told us, I'm sure that he would ease up on his restrictions on your magic studies," Marianne says. "I mean, on the way back to the castle, Giancarlo was bragging about how he and Alberto found that strange spell that they were using in a grimoire, and it actually seemed that your father was impressed with it."
"Alberto's allowed to do whatever he wants, and Father's happy whenever Giancarlo's up to something that actually doesn't involve adultery," Luciana rolls her eyes. "Besides, that armor spell is something like a running game that the two of them have had going ever since they were Elena's age, with Giancarlo pretending that he's a masked knight who was 'summoned from the black void' by Alberto... ugh, that sounds even dumber when I say it out loud."

Even if it sounds dumb, it looked like it was pretty effective at least.

And ask Luciana if we can still write letters to her even if we live at the same place.

I actually think it's kind of sweet to write to someone you see everyday.
>>
So, you guys remember how it was commented that Elena might be a magic prodegy because she copied and altered Andreas' spell, right? I know what the night terrors are. Whispers of the old gods. Bequeathment of eldritch knowledges.

Did Reinhold ever overhear Luciana mention the animal scale?

Though not silly and probably an unpleasant topic in general we could always ask about how the situation will affect Celestino's older children and if there's any likelihood of them getting caught up (or being involved in) any of these happenings.

After making sure that my Mom would be alright by herself, me and Emilio headed to his room so that he can get his stuff together for when we leave tomorrow.

"You don't have to help me like this," Emilio says as I drag a huge suitcase over to his bed. "You have your own packing to do, don't you?"
"I don't have much here in the castle so it won't take me long to get it all packed," I reply. "Besides, I wouldn't feel right leaving you alone right now."
"Thanks, I know that you and your mother are even closer than I am with mine so this has to be hard on you too..."
"I'd be lying if I said that this whole thing doesn't have me depressed too but it's not like I'd ditch you like that," I say with my best fake smile.

While I'm still feeling really shitty that Leopold got messed up as bad as he did and the thought of leaving my Mom alone at a time like this scares the FUCK out of me, I have to keep up a tough-guy image for Emilio.

"Thanks, Karel..." Emilio says as he tries to wipe the tears out of his eyes without me noticing. But of course I do.
"I know this entire thing sucks," I say, "but try and look on the bright side, okay?"
"What 'bright side?'"
"You'll have plenty of chances to impress Marianne, now that you'll be staying under the same roof!" I give him a thumbs-up. "If she actually gets to spend some time around you outside of formal shit, I'm sure that you'll be able to-"
"Karel... would you cut it out already?"

Emilio drops the shirt that he was trying to fold and turns to face me. I don't think I've ever seen him look this serious before.

"Uh... cut what out?" I ask.
"I know that you're just trying to look out for me," he sighs, "but I'm tired of it, okay? I'm a wimp and Marianne has never liked me and she never will. I'm not cool like Alberto or confident like Giancarlo or strong like you and Reinhold and I'll never be any of those things."

"I suck and I'm always going to suck and all your pushing me to be like you isn't going to change that fact!" Emilio yells.

"why the hell are you just giving up li-" I stop myself before I end up saying something rude. Seriously, I feel like slapping him for being this stupid.

"All I am to Marianne is her friend's annoying pathetic little brother," Emilio says, "and that's the only way she'll ever see me. It doesn't matter how I feel if she doesn't even see me as a person."
"C'mon, that's loser talk," I say with a long sigh. "You're better than that."
"No I'm not," he shakes his head.
"YES YOU FUCKING ARE!" I scream. "And I'll be damned if I let my best friend sit here like a little bitch and-"

oh god what the fuck did I say

"Heh..." Emilio says, tears streaming down his face even though he's smiling. "You said it yourself."
"But I didn't mean-"
"Just... leave me alone for a while, okay? That's an order."

Those three words hit me like a brick to the face.

"You know, not talking about this part of why that whole thing with the arranged marriage with Monique almost happened," you say. "I know he's intimidating and everything, but he's still your father..."
"Your boyfriend is right, you know," Marianne says with an amused smirk. "I very much doubt that it would hurt to at least ask him to ease up on his ban on grimoires. Worst-case scenario, he says no and then you go right back to sneaking them into your room like you have been."
"I guess you -may- have a point," Luciana sighs. "Very well, I'll ask him after this current situation is dealt with."

"And if you're lucky," Marianne says, "perhaps your father would be willing to take you under his wing and teach you all the crazy spells that he knows... we both know that you'd absolutely -love- that."
"And we both know that that has about as much chance of happening as you taking up your father's weapon of choice," Luciana laughs.
"...why are you bringing that up..." she mumbles.
"Bringing what up?" you ask.
"Oh, you didn't know?" Luciana says with a wicked grin. "Back when Marianne was maybe seven years old, her father got it in his head that he'd teach her how to defend herself like he does..."
"oh my god please shut up" Marianne groans.
"So he taught her Fragment Tomahawk..." Luciana laughs, "...and I suppose she was using her father's weapon as her mental image for what she was trying to make... long story short, Marianne created a gigantic halberd and immediately ended up trapped under it," she giggles. "The trauma from that was so bad that she hasn't so much as touched one of those things ever since!"

While Luciana basks in her best friend's embarrassment, you decide that it's not fair that Marianne be the only on to suffer.

"Hey, Luciana?" you call out.
"Hm?" Luciana replies, stopping her gloating long enough to turn to you.
"So I'm supposed to be sending you letters every few days, right? But how am I supposed to get the messenger bird to deliver to the same place that I'm sending the letter from?"
"...huh?" Luciana stares you, dumbfounded.
"Ah, so the two of you were going to be sending sappy correspondence to each other?" Marianne says, a wide grin on her face. "And knowing you, you were oh so looking forward to being able to read your beloved's letters..."
"Cut it out," she rolls her eyes. "You know it wasn't going to be like that."

"Very well, come in!" the Princess shouts back.

Having been given permission, Rana enters the room.

She seems kind of nervous.

"Umm... first off, let me thank you for the opportunity to visit your kingdom, Princess Marianne," Rana says, bowing.
"Er, you're welcome?" Marianne replies with a puzzled expression.
"I just stopped by to tell you that Reya will be right back, he ran off to find Mira and Randolf before they leave the castle so he can ask them to pick up our things from the Guild seeing as how we're not supposed to be leaving ourselves," she says with a nervous laugh.
"Very well, that's fine with me," Luciana replies.
"I need to head back to the other room now, though... Sylvie's not taking the news very well and we're trying to console her because you know..."

A few minutes after Rana leaves the room, her brother comes back... and Luciana immediately gets up from the couch.

"Crap, was I holding you up or something?" Reya asks.
"No, I'd just remembered that I should probably tell the cooking staff about our dinner plans... and I should probably start packing my things while I wait for our food," Luciana replies. "While I suppose I would need to be accompanied to the kitchen, I don't need any help in packing my things so you can head back here after you walk me to my room."
"Alright, sounds like a plan," he says with a nod.

Before leaving, Luciana turns to you and Marianne.

"I'll be back in an hour or so, so don't feel like you have to wait for me or anything," she says, waving goodbye before she closes the door behind her.

With her friend gone, Marianne lets out a tired sigh before getting up from the couch herself.

"I suppose I should probably take this opportunity to pack my things as well," Marianne says as she makes for her room. "I have no plans to leave the room any time soon, so you can feel free to do whatever it is before our food arrives."
"Uh, sure," you reply.

"So that's all your clothes..." Andreas says as he fastens the last of the suitcases. "Did you want to bring any toys or anything?"
"No, that's fine," I mumble. "I got my clothes and Inaba so that should be it..."
"Alright, If you're absolutely sure," he sighs. "Now let's get Inaba's stuff together."
"'kay."

After taking a few seconds to pet Inaba, I go over to the other corner where Papa put all her extra bags of hay and stuff and put it back into the bigger bag with the bunnies all over it that Papa gave me when I first got Inaba. This sucks, I don't wanna leave.

"Oh, and where's the cage that you used to keep her in?" Andreas asks. "You should bring that too."
"She doesn't like the cage," I reply, putting my hands on my hips.
"I know you like to carry her around the castle and stuff, but what about the carriage ride to Granache? I know you don't expect to hold her in your arms however many hours that takes."
"I'll be sitting so my arms won't get tired."
"And if she needs to poop or pee while you're holding her for all that time?"
".........the cage is over there," I say, pointing up on top of my bookcase. Inaba gets scared just looking at it so I put it all the way up there so she wouldn't have to see it anymore.

".........PLEASE don't do stuff like that while you're in Granache, you'll make your uncle have a heartattack."
"Yeah, I know..." I mumble.

Of course I'm not gonna do stuff like that when grownups are actually watching, stupid.

"C'mon, cheer up some," Andreas pats me on the head. "Gregory's kids are around your age, you'll actually have someone to play with for once. And Vincent had two younger daughters too, if I remember right... wouldn't it be nice to actually be able to play with another girl who can actually form sentences and doesn't try to beat you up?"

"It does indeed suck, Princess," Andreas replies. "And that's why I shall do my best to find the fiend behind this scheme so that you may return home sooner!"
"C'mon, you sound like that jerk with the girl's name," I laugh.
"There we go, a smile suits you better."

You stupid jerk, I'm gonna hug you and then you'll feel bad about me being gone!

"I still don't want you to get hurt, though..." I say as I hold onto him as tight as I can. "I mean, those guys got your friend -and- Sir Leopold..."
"Yeah, and I mean to pay them back for that," Andreas says, hugging me back. "Don't worry, I'll mess them up so bad that Gregory'd be impressed."
"With that star line airy spell that you used in that hallway?" I ask.
"It's 'Star Line Orrery,'" he pokes me on the forehead. "And that's only the most basic thing I can do with Ephemeris Edge," he smiles. "Maaaaaaybe I might decide to show you when you get back."

Huh? So he can do more than THAT with the sparkly stuff that falls off of his sword when he uses that spell? How in the world-

"That's a promise, right?" I ask, making my best most serious face.
"As long as you're good," Andreas crosses his arms.
"So you promise, RIGHT?" I say it again. He's not getting out of this.
"Yeah, sure," he sighs.
"Okay then," I nod. "You better not get hurt or anything, you got that? I'm gonna hold you up this!"
"You mean 'hold me to this," he corrects me. "Now let's go see how your mother's doing, you can share those cookies I gave you with her before we head back to have dinner with Luciana and the others."
"'kay," I say, grabbing the bag of cookies off my table as I head for the door.

As Marianne vanishes into her bedroom, you head over to yours and pick up the sketchbook that you'd left on your desk. Luciana said that you have an hour or so before she gets back, so you might as well try and so something relaxing in the meantime like drawing.

It seems like forever since you last sketched anything, but now's as good a time as any. As you walk over to the table in the living room section of your suite, you wonder what to draw... and then your mind flashes back to Luciana's story about Marianne and the halberd...

...that's it!

With a big goofy grin on your face, you take a seat at the table, flip to a clean page of your sketchbook, and get to work.

With a general idea in your mind of what to draw, you get to work!

Though it takes you a little while to figure out what kind of armor you want to draw her in, you eventually settle on something similar to what Nicolette wears and then it's pretty smooth sailing from there.

...except for the halberd, anyways. Since you don't really see many of those in your everyday life, it takes a bit of effort to finally pull a design out of the ether.

Thickening the lines...

...shading...

...and finally, your drawing of Halberd Princess Marianne is complete! Though this cartoonish sketch is far from a masterpiece, it is kind of cute and you wouldn't be embarrassed showing it to anyone who asked.

Satisfied with your handiwork, you get up from your seat and stretch your legs... that really was an appreciated break from the endless drama that the day seems to have degenerated into. And surprisingly, that drawing only took you a halfhour to finish.

"The fun stuff only takes a little while but the bad stuff lasts freaking forever," you mutter to yourself as you wonder what you should do next.

>what do you do now?
>>
>>30951072
Show it to Mari.
>>
>>30951072
Let's just finish packing and wait for Luciana to return and/or Marianne to finish
>>
>>30951072

Go out for a walk in the alleys. Time for a random encounter.

Unless we end up late and everyone is pissed at us again.
>>
>>30951072
Grab that book we've been in the middle of reading for a while and get some reading time in.

Or take a nap since it's been a long day and we could use a chance to close our eyes and stop worrying about things.

Not that anon, but it's a bit childish to go 'LOOKATICANDOOO' when she's already busy, emotionally distressed, and might need a moment alone. It would probably be more amusing to pass it around the carriage anyways once it naturally comes up.
>>
>>30951167
I'd rather risk her thinking we're retarded than everyone else as well.

This. Reinhold fucked up enough today. At least don't shove it in her face.

Get some reading in, we can show the picture to Marianne at a more appropriate time.

That's it for tonight, guys.
It was a fun thread, and I actually got most of what I planned on done tonight for once!
Next thread will be Thursday night, and I plan on hopefully ending the day finally I hope.

Feel free to keep on voting on what to do next, I'll read the posts when I wake up.

Thanks for playing!
>>
>>30951201
Honestly she's more likely to sigh, complain about us being stupid and/or oblivious (or bothering her too much), and then reluctantly mention that it's an alright drawing. That's the best case scenario right now.
>>
>>30951214
Thanks for running, arch.
>>
Don't forget that she didn't even react when we joked about witching with Karel.

She's tired, guys. Now's not the time to laugh at her expense.

No reason to show Marianne the drawing now, she'll see it when she's done packing.
Lets get some reading done.

You hope too much. Those hopes will be crushed.
>>
>>30951214
An entire month for a day in game. I really like your dialogue/fleshing out of the characters but I will say that pacing is your biggest weakness arch.

Still I've been here for 100ish threads so you a a good QM. Sleep well turtle prince.

Does that mean that the dinner with Princesses will be extra-short?

Who's going to be there again?

>>30951254
Nope, it just means Arch will not be able to keep to his schedule once again.

It's okay, lass or lad. Grab a mead and lurk our halls for a spell, get comfortable in the dark and observe. You'll develop keen eyes for it and learn our tongue an' our runes.

Grow a proper beard while yer at it and be welcomed to the next feast.

Let's of a similar drawing of Luciana magic king up Magma Leviathan.

my vote is more reading, i love fleshing out this amazing world. don't show mari our drawing just yet, wait till tomorrow when aquaman is around
