You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose. Hopefully Louie should have caught up to the customer by now and handed back the necklace Charme had managed to slip from his pockets, despite being heavily inebriated. She's got some skill, you'll give her that, but apparently no common sense as to when to apply said skills.

Hopefully that's something you can train out of her.

You look up, and realize you've attracted a few strange looks from the rest of the customers still browsing the store. You quickly apologize for the fuss, and try to convince them it was nothing serious. Most of them return to browsing, a few leave the store quietly.

[ ]The day has only just begun. Stay open.
[ ]Close the store early, deal with Charme.
[ ]Close the store early, take the rest of the day off.

Since you still have customers around, there's no point closing yet. You can let Charme stew in the back room until lunch. Perhaps longer.

You calm yourself and sit back down at the counter, setting your features back into their characteristic smile.

The few customers browsing the shop don't pick anything out, and simply leave without buying. A few more flow in but there seems very little business now. Perhaps you need to alter your choice in stock?

After a while, the Guildmaster strolls in through the door, the bell chiming above his head.

"Hey Recette! How's business! Oh, looks like you managed to get some new stock. Where'd you pick this stuff up?"

"Morning! This stock? I, uh, got it from an illegal dungeon diver. She tried to rob us, so we took her stuff and let her go. Fair is fair, and all that."

"ILL-illegal?!" He catches his yelp and leans in over the counter to you. "Don't go saying that out loud! You mean you got this stuff in without passing the Adventurer's Guild? Do you have any idea how much trouble you'll be in if the Church catches you? And they'll be on my case too if they find out I know about it and didn't report you!"

You shrug. "So what can I help you with?" He gives you a dissatisfied look.

"Well, nothing really. I was just stopping by to see how my newest member was doing. But... since you've got new stock, you got any weapons I could look at?"

You don't. He grunts, and wishes you well before leaving the store.

A little while later, one of the browsing customers, a young pretty lady with flashy purple hair, approaches your counter.

"Hey there. You seem like a knowledgeable trader. Perhaps you'd be interested in a deal! I assure you it will most certainly turn out in your favor for just a SMALL investment!

She draws a small pocket watch and dangles it before you. "And only for the low, low sum of 100,000 Pix!"

After some time, most of the remaining browsers filter their way out of the store as lunchtime approaches. By the time the clock tower rings noon, the store is empty bar yourself, Louie in the corner, and Tear sat casually on the bar.

You start to ask Tear if she wants to break for lunch when you hear commotion outside. Through the window, you can see one of the other merchant buildings down the street. It looks like the owner is having a disagreement with a band of thuggish-looking men. After a few more moments, one of the ruffians beats him to the ground as another tosses a brick through his storefront. A man in a suit leans in to say something to him, before turning away and walking up the street towards you. The rest of the gang break and fall in behind him.

A sharp intake of breath beside you. "Tear? What is it?"

"Those aren't Terme men."

The three of you move away from the window and back to your positions as the group approaches, stopping before your store. The suited man enters the store and greets you.
"Ah, good morning my friends. Would you please fetch the owner of this fine establishment?"

>How do you greet him?
>>
>>30937376

>"What can I do for you?"
>>
>>30937536
I do. It's. Uh... where did I put it?

...Uh, let me get back to you on that one?

You have some weapons, but only the stuff you bought from him in the first place. The only weapon you looted from the dungeon, you let Louie keep as a reward.
The only items of note are a few pieces of jewelry, some treasures, some ingredients you haven't identified, a set of scales that are on Caillou's list, and an amulet with a strange rune on it.
>>
>>30937532
I wish we knew more adventurers. I'd love to imagine this situation of a group of thugs trying to cause trouble in a store with the full cast nearby.

They'd tip over a shelf and suddenly every customer is armed and glaring at them. Recette would immediately demand they hand over everything they have, and fix up what they broke. Then you've got a bunch of naked guys running out of the store with Recette calling out from inside, "Thank you for your business!"
>>
>>30937532
"Piss off, thug, or I'll aerate your bowels."
>>
>>30937638
"Good morning, sir!" You greet him with your usual beaming grin. "I am Recette of Recettear. The owner. How can I help you?"

"Pleased to make your acquaintance, Recette!" He bows low, trying to take you hand. You reject the advance, instead leveling your business stare at him. He falters for barely a heartbeat. "My employer would like me to ensure that you are aware of the upcoming... troubles... that might be affecting this district, and to offer our services in ensuring that said troubled times shall not... affect the prosperity of your establishment."

Tear interjects, "would this trouble involve Terme Finance, by chance?" The man's smile turns wolfish.

"A sharp one, I see. It would indeed involve the dear employees of Mr. Terme's company. And all those associated with him. We predict that unfortunately, the time of Terme Finance will shortly be coming to and end."

"You're offering protection to Terme's stores?" Tear raises her eyebrow at him. "How is that good for business on either side?"

"Simple. We do not wish to inflict damage upon you when we shall soon enough be replacing Terme Finance in this region. And you do not want the power exchange to affect your business. Am I not correct?"

This particular protection racket clearly is a show of force. This guy doesn't seem like the kind of guy who's capable of much more than breaking bones, so I doubt you're getting any deals with him. Best we can hope for is to sneak valuable info out of him.
>>
>>30937830
"Go on." Tear casts a quick glance your way as the suit continues.

"Any debt currently owed to Mr. Terme shall be transferred to my employer, effective immediately. The value shall be halved, as shall the interest rate, though payment installments shall remain the same. Your store will cease all supporting payments to Terme Finance, for stock, protection or information. Additionally, any bodyguards currently under your employ shall make themselves readily available to be requisitioned by us whenever the need should arise."

"And who is your employer?" Tear asks coolly.

"That information shall be provided upon accepting our terms, obviously."

As he'd been talking, you'd quietly rapped on the door behind you. The door handle has since gently been opened, and you can feel Charme's tense presence directly behind you, ready to spring into action. Louie also has been visibly tense, though you're slightly concerned that he's currently unarmed, his sword still in its sheath against the corner wall.

Halving the total debt sounds a lot better than it is. The payments remain the same, so our ability to expand our income is still exactly the same, which is how we actually get out of the debt. Assuming we do keep increasing our income by a solid pace, halving the debt doesn't really mean much more than getting out a week or two earlier. "You could have at least TRIED to make this deal look legit," you tell him, "why would I trade one master for another when all you can offer me is some cheap thugs and cash incentives? Get out of my store."

The man's grin turns sinister, "well I'm sorry it had to be like this." He raises his hand. On the signal, his thugs, all seven of them, move into the store, spreading out.

"Louie, show this man out." He nods once at you, then turns grim-faced to the suit.

"Sir, it's time for you to leave." Louie is reaching out to grasp the man's arm when the thug nearest him starts to move. You barely have time to call out before Louie has already reacted. He flicks his leg, catching the wooden chair he'd been sitting on and flinging it up into his grasp. He uses it to catch the arm of the man coming towards him, knife and all, before twisting it hard. You hear a loud cracking, as the man's arm bends out of shape. He screams, dropping the knife and falling to the floor. Louie uses the moment's respite to grasp his sheathed sword from the corner and swings it hard, cracking the second man across the face, knocking him out-cold in one blow.
As the others are quickly turning to face Louie, Charme suddenly explodes from the door behind you, leaping over the counter to drop-kick one of the men from behind. He crashes heavily into the center shelf, knocking your wares across the floor.

The five men still standing, four thugs and the suit, quickly regroup near the door, facing off against their two attackers flanking on either side.

you owe half as much money.
you are paying interest on half as much money.
you will be in debt significantly less longer if the amount is large.
and when you can collect insurance money on a shop and not have enough to cover your debt it sounds as if the debt is immense.
get your shit together. owe's .50 is better than owing 1.

but idiots saying that half of a debt is pretty much the same as a whole debt is idiotic.
>>
>>30938781
Would you care to tell us how much debt we have?
>>
>>30938777
Right, but at some point we're going to be making sufficiently more than the payments that we can afford to pay greater than the required amount, and unless you are suggesting that they would outright refuse our money if we tried to give them more than they demanded, that is where the time issue stops being linear.
>>
>>30938800
It's a mindset from the game, I believe.
In Recettear, the debt payments increase each week to scale with your increased ability to turn over a profit.
In the first week, you're only paying a few thousand Pix. In the second to last week, the payment is 80,000 Pix while the final, fifth week is 200,000 Pix.
Obviously if you'd halved the total debt while paying installments via this method, you are only lessening the final payment, meaning you've only shortened the repayments by a single week.

Of course, we won't be using those repayment methods.
Because your father borrowed far more than that in my setting.
>>
>>30938777
He's talking about Recette's rate of income: As time goes by, it will increase. What she pays at the start is significantly less than what she pays later on. Halving the total debt without changing payment installments only removes payments from the latter end of Recette's paychart, and since most of the debt is concentrated there, the amount of time shaved off is less than half.
>>
>>30938874
>borrowed far more

You slowly walk around the counter, closing the distance with the suit. "What are you doing? You won't get away with this! I'm not alone, we'll come back with more men and end you! You'll regret ever crossing us!"

You cut him off with a steady, low voice. "You come into my store. You threaten my profit. You damage my stock." You stop directly in front of him, glaring deep into his soul.

"This- This is madness!"

"Madness? THIS. IS. RECETTEAR!" You drive your shiv deep into his rib cage. As he sputters and leans into you, Charme and Louie set to work either side of you, quickly crumping into the thugs, dispatching all of them in non-lethal ways. Louie with his sheathed blade, Charme with her bare hands. After but a few moments, the only thug standing is the suit. You yank your shiv free and turn to walk away from him, leaving him to fall on his own.
"Louie, would you mind clearing this trash out of my stor-"

"RECETTE LOOK OUT!" You spin your head around in time to see the man produce a long, thin dagger from his waistcoat and jab it towards your face.
Louie reacts instantly, drawing his blade and swinging it in one smooth movement to intercept the blade. There's almost no resistance, clearly less than Louie was expecting, as the blade knocks the dagger clear out the way, before following through and connecting with the suit's neck.

His head bounces once on your wooden floor tiling before rolling away to stop against the wall.
Louie stares at the decapitated body slumped against the table for almost a minute, face pale, before finally turning for the door and diving outside and projecting his breakfast into the gutter.

After a few more minutes, he steps back in, wiping his mouth on his sleeve. "Your first?" Charme asks him gently. He nods, not looking at anyone or anything. "Don't worry, it gets easier."

"I don't want it to," he states simply.

Owing half is better, yes, but the entire point of Terme entrusting us this store is so that we can expand our income. In the video game, halving the debt would have pretty much saved you exactly one week, no more. I don't know if we're looking at quite as explosive a growth in this quest (probably not) but the point still stands strong. The speed with which we can pay off our debt is decided by how fast we can GROW, not by how much we can earn. If the installments remain the same, the money we'll have available to invest in growth also remains the same.
Now, if you also factor in that Terme is currently supplying us with good deals that we profit from, betraying them would actually SLOW our growth, reducing our ability to pay the debt. The end result could very easily be that we'll be indebted even longer if we took the deal.

That is why the deal is bad. It's a quick cut in the debt, but quick cash is absolutely meaningless to us. What matters is opportunities to grow, nothing else.

In the normal game, it's 820,000, but depending on how large the interest was, it was probably less. As of the game right now, depending on how long Recette has been dealing, and if it was even making a dent in the debt, it could be more or less.

On a tangent, this quest got me back into playing the game again, but the game is easy as it is anyway and I've already done a no dungeon run. So I started up a no market/guild run and it was significantly harder to balance shit around. Advance Orders that didn't involve general items like foodstuffs/weapons/armor were a pain to properly fulfill and would break my combo often. Not to mention I couldn't get books at all unless I wanted to waste significant amounts of time boss rushing to Charme or Tielle. Upgrading adventurers via your merchant level reaching the next tier was out as well. Louie was using a steel sword while we went through the Obsidian Tower. It was a very interesting run.

Pat the Louie, clean up shop and body ASAP.

Tear flaps her way out the door, commenting simply that she needs to pass on some information and leaving the three of you alone. You ask Charme if she could clean up the mess, while Louie is left to drag the seven unconscious thugs outside. A somewhat more brutal conclusion to the meeting than you intended, but you can't think of a better way to send a message to Terme that you're loyal to him.
Or to any other protection gangs that you sure as hell don't need it.

You can only hope the consequences of this don't come back to bite you too hard later.
>>
>>30939093
We looted the thugs, right?
>>
>>30938999
I vote for Recette to ask Charme if she knows a alchimist or a necromancer to whome they could sell the corpses. At this point you need a profit, and you need to make the bodies disappear
>>
>>30939116
fair point.

And that's all for tonight, folks!
Sorry for the short thread, but I've got some stuff I need to sort out.

Thanks for the fun, I hope to see you all next week!

As always, feel free to use this space, and I shall linger for a while if I'm wanted or needed.
>>
>>30939116
Surely Terme already has something set up for getting rid of bodies.

I made this for you, Recette-chan!
>>

... Caillou runs a lot of experiments with the items he often purchases in the game. I wonder how much he'd be willing to pay to do some human experimentation with fresh bodies?
>>
>>30939093
Lets try to expand our party with some mages and such magic users.
>>
>>30938874
If the debt is even bigger, my interest in cutting it in half just gets even smaller. The only way to pay something that size off is by massively expanding our income to the point where the size of the debt no longer matters
>>
>>30939144
Don't forget the stock of items we have! Are we able to figure out our base pix value of the store stock using the actual in game values for them or should we just know what we have for the sake of knowing?
>>
My friends, we need to expand our contacts! the fey isn't there, so we can turn this opportunity into profit. I'm saying: finding a buyer for the corpses, hide the money and then invest it into a separate fund, so that you have money that isn't being watched and punctured by Terme

I've not forgotten, but I've apparently mis-placed the itemized list I had prepared. I may have to write it out again before the next thread.

You're certainly free to ask him, if you can find him!

>>30939149
Of course.

>>30938861
Tear refuses to tell you. She thinks hearing the full amount in one go would overwhelm your adorable little mind.
Mr. Terme has simply told you that you'll be able to pay it off before you turn 20.
>>
>>30939704
>Tear refuses to tell you.
I'm sorry, but that's bullshit. For all we know Recette has already payed the debt back and Terme is simply milking the naive cow.

In order for a debt to be legaly recognised, you need to have both parties admitting the existence and the ammount of the debt, or at least to have enough evidence of the existence of the debt to convince a judge. In both case, how much do you own would be the first thing that need to be cleared.
>>
>>30939884
>legally recognised
>debt owed to the mafia by our now deceased father

I don't think the legal standing is really the issue here.
>>
>>30939704
Might it be a better idea to tie up the thugs for Terme to deal with as he pleases?
>>
>>30939704
Are we going to get some actual numbers, maybe regarding at least the next payment? I understand the vagueness helps with keeping /tg/ from setting up some elaborate system to pay off the debt in some ridiculous fashion if they had solid number to meet, cause I don't doubt the ones who found the DC to squeeze into a grown man's anus would somehow be at a loss for settling a debt.

Maybe instead of a flat number, how much do we have in % to pay off the next installment?
>>
>>30939922
>I don't think the legal standing is really the issue here.

Well in that case you don't own them anything, you are pretty much a glorified slave and you have to escape their clutches by the fastest path.

Isn't there some kind of dark lord that could need a financial advisor around here?

>>30939932
You can't devise a course of action if you don't know the datas. What Tear and Terme are asking Recette to do is to rebuild an unknow puzzle with the eyes closed, while half the pieces are missing.
>>
>>30940138
>you are pretty much a glorified slave and you have to escape their clutches by the fastest path

Again, mafia, this should not be new information. They have been pretty decent to us so far, considering how bad it could have been, as hopeless as it may seem, its probably a better idea to make ourselves valuable to them rather than trying to escape.
Paying an unspecified debt off by running a shop for the rest of your life is still preferable to paying said debt off by being forced into prostitution.
>>
>>30940294
What I mean is that there is a difference between owning a debt to the mafia and being a slave. In the first, they'll let you go once you pay back everything, but you have to pay no matter how humongous it is. In the second, which appears to be Recette's current situation, you're the product that's being sold. If they promised to set you free in the second situation, they'll just keep moving the goalpost ("I'm altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it further.")

For me, I'd rather be free or dead trying than a slave, no matter how "nice" the chains are.
>>
>>30940748
Not the other anon, but I disagree to a point. As far as being a slave no matter how "nice" the chains are, certain circumstances can lead to you being enslaved but still incredibly well off. Obviously doesn't happen when your working off a debt to the mafia, but still felt I needed to make the point.
>>
>>30940748
>In the first, they'll let you go once you pay back everything

We clearly have different ideas of the honesty of organised criminals.

>I'd rather be free or dead trying than a slave, no matter how "nice" the chains are

Enjoy your shallow, unmarked grave!
>>
>>30940856
Think about it, as a 'slave' to this particular mafia, we get a place to live, a job, an advisor to enable our success and protection. That actually seems pretty cushy for slavery to me.
>>
>>30940896
I do have to agree, and frankly it seems better to me than selling drugs like we were. Its all a matter of what you enjoy doing. If you are Recette and love owning your own shop, even if you have to pay off a huge debt, then your still doing what you love, your bills are just...different. And its not like Terme is just squeezing us dry so far, he seems like a reasonable businessman who is more interested in growing assets than immediate cash. Which is the obvious and most logical course of action.

Also, we should actually deliver the thugs to Terme's goons. I imagine he wouldn't want us to just release them like that. At the very least he can make sure they leave town permanently if he doesn't recruit them or kill them.
>>
>>30940856
I would prefer be free in Hell than slave in Paradise, frankly.

>>30940862

>We clearly have different ideas of the honesty of organised criminals

If there was no difference, why would loan sharks even need the prestence of a debt? Just grab some chum in the crowd, you got your new slave for life! Loan sharks want their money back, and have some sick fun punishing the ones who don't pay.

>Enjoy your shallow, unmarked grave

If I'm gonna end in a shallow, unmarked grave because of the mafia, I would rather that was because i said "fuck you " to them and failed to escape than after a life of servitude that helped them make a profit.

Everyone end in a grave. The important thing is to end there in style.
>>
>>30941014
>If you are Recette and love owning your own shop...

You don't own your own shop, you just run a shop for your owners.
>>
>>30941184
>why would loan sharks even need the prestence of a debt?
Its the hope man, if you leave them some hope you can milk them for life. Plus its also a good indicator that if they can't pay up, no-one is going to miss them that badly, if they're going to a loanshark they've already hit rock bottom, or near enough.

>Everyone end in a grave. The important thing is to end there in style.
I would prefer to end up there after living a long, happy and generally successful life running a lucrative business that just so happens to be owned by the mafia, but to each his own.
>>
>>30941184
Ok, ok, we get it, you're suicidally devoted to some nebulous ideal of "freedom".

Go be Captain Murrika somewhere else please.
>>
>>30941323
Sorry, let me amend that.

*If you are Recette and love operating a shop that as long as you keep profitable have near total control over...

But I do understand where you are coming from with the free in hell over slave in paradise thing. Some people just can't stand even the idea that they are not autonomous. Myself, I might or might not care depending on the circumstances and how much freedom I actually had. Its all subjective to the actual circumstances
>>
>>30940138
>Isn't there some kind of dark lord that could need a financial advisor around here?
If there is, it's not a good option anyway. We have little in the way of rare talents or precious information or other resources to make ourselves valuable to said dark lord. And you'd still be exchanging the mafia for a dark lord, which is a questionable choice in itself. After all, what really changes?

But the point I'm trying to get to, if you want out, you gotta build resources. Right now you're not worth shit, so that's what you'll get treated as anywhere you decide to leave Terme for. We're in a good situation for doing that thanks to the apparent good will of Mr. Terme right now, so the only logical play is to stick to our hand and bide our time. Once we do have resources of one kind or another, we can either try to use them on breaking off without getting murdered for our efforts or to achieve influence within Terme. Both would be a step away from enslavement.

>Buy Reccetear

>Struggle to pay off the sudden jump from 10k to 30k
>Suddenly, 80k debt to pay
>Noone buys anything that costs more than 2.5k
>Get my loli kneecaps broken by fairy mafia and live in a box for not being able to pay debts
>Realize the Jewfairy failed to tell me that youre supposed to give people a deal close to what they want to pay instead of like 10% more even if they'd still buy so you can increase their budgets

Why was I not informed of this sooner, Tear set me the fuck up.
>>
>>30945930
Of course she set you the fuck up, it's in her best interest to do so. That's why she's known as the jew fairy.

There will be many more ways to make impressive amounts of income later in the story. Once you are aware of these possibilities, Tear will be less opposed to revealing how much you owe.

>>30939932
Tear has arranged for you to pay off installments at a percentage of your weekly gross income.

You don't know how much exactly. Because Recette has not asked.
>>
you still there?
