Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you were forced to drag one of your friends out of a bathhouse after he tried to leave without paying his tab, then you returned to the Academy and went to see the Artificer about some artifacts.

Alright! I'm back, and it looked like y'all had a good long discussion about what to buy at the end of last thread. I'll post what seemed to be the most popular options in the form of a Final Destination style vote.

Vote 1 for
>The Dragon Staff

Vote 2 for
>Nothing

And, really against my better judgement, Vote 3 for
>The Mask

Remember, quote and the number only.

Voting period ends in five minutes.

“I'll take the staff, which after my twenty five percent discount should come out to a hundred and thirty five gold.” Hayes nods his head, and with a wave of his hand the display case covering the staff slides towards the ceiling. “Alrighty there then stranger. Hayes was half expectin' you to take that mask.” While some small part of you had wanted to buy the mask anyway, you managed to bury that desire without much trouble.

You pick the staff off of its stand and immediately feel your senses expand outwards. In fact, it's a little disorienting at first. You can feel the breeze outside as if it were blowing against your own skin. Hear the incessant chatter of students. See the moon and the stars above, even if you can't really -see- them. The sensory overload sends your vision spinning and for a brief moment you think you might pass out, but the sensation passes as you get more used to it.

“So remind me, what is it exactly that this thing does?” Hayes rubs his chin for a moment contemplatively. “Well, as its lookin' like you already found out, it expands your senses without you actually needin' to cast any spells. It lets you control small vines, y'know do that fancy furniture weavin' thing the Archmagos does. Also helps yah learn nature magic if you meditate holding it, what 'cause essentially you'd be meditating to reach a level you're already at. Plus it really makes castin' nature magic more efficient. Helps conserve energy and all that whatnot.”

“Careful though, don't get too reliant on it. Else you'll have trouble castin' nature magic without it. It's a crutch, y'see. That's why the Archmagos donated it in the first place, was getting' too reliant on it to cast his spells.”

In retrospective the staff was the best item. I mean, it does what the helm did, raises our nature magic and makes casting it cheater!
>>
>>30903703
It tends to depend on the person. Some people would get pissed off since it might be viewed as 'cheating'. Others might view it as you just using all the tools you have available.

Hayes seems insane though, so if anybody was just not gonna care it'd be him.
>>

You pause for a moment, inspecting the staff and flexing your now expanded state of mind. “You know, really. This is nice and all. I'm sure it would be incredibly useful to most folks.” Hayes raises an eyebrow. “Hayes can hear the 'But' comin' from here.” You grin. “But, I'm not most folks. I run my insane ass dozens, hundreds of feet underground into the remains of a lost civilization. Remains, I might add, constructed almost solely of metal and stone. So while yes, this is useful when I'm above ground. I don't intend to make all that much money above ground.”

Hayes considers this for a moment, scratching the back of his head. “Well, you raise a good point there stranger. Y'really do. An' Hayes sympathizes with you an' all. Still, the price is the price. Hayes ain't the one that sets 'em. He can offer discounts sure, but really it's the administration that controls how much he sells this junk for.” He smirks. “Hell, this isn't even really 'the good stuff'. It's the useful stuff. The neat stuff. The possibly-dangerous stuff. Not the good stuff though.”
>Vys Pool: (9/22)

That really grabs your attention. In a big way. “Well, listen. You traded me that construct for the command unit, right?” He nods his head. “Sure did.” Thinking on it, the dog construct is really just going to weight you down at this point. You could trade it for the staff and use the money you saved to buy Profectus a mount for a fraction of the cost.
>Offer to trade the construct for the staff and a peek at the good stuff.
>No, you'd rather keep the construct anyway. Just ask for a larger discount.

“Well, listen Hayes. I've got a second construct. An attack dog.” You gesture over your shoulder to Fulvia. “My restored companion her dubbed it a 'Breacher Unit'. Ripped right through those reinforced doors you find in ruins.” That seems to get Hayes' interest. “Y'know, Hayes has been workin' on restorin' one of them for a while now. A model in better repair sure would be useful...” Oh man, you've got him. “Alright, well how about I trade you the dog construct, you give me the staff and a little peek, just a little peek, at the 'good stuff'. Yeah?”

Hayes is silent for a long while. Rubbing his scruffy chin. “Well... Hayes really shouldn't. He's gon' get his ass chewed out for this somethin' fierce, but yah make a persuasive argument stranger. Even if y'need vys to do it.” He glances over his shoulder, as if half expecting his boss to come springing out of nowhere. “Hayes'll only show yah one thing from the Academy Reserve, but Hayes'll give yah a choice. Do you want to see a suit of armor, a shield, a ring, or a pair of boots? Now, Hayes can't tell yah what he'll grab from there 'cause there's a lot of stuff crammed in, but he can guarantee it'll be in the category y'specify.”

You think for a moment, scratching the back of your head. This is a tough choice. In the end, you decide that the armor is out, you've gotten by fine without a shield, and what in the world would enchanted boots do anyway? "I'll take the ring." Hayes nods his head, and you see him wander off. You try to follow him but he motions for you to stay put, so you do.

You hear stone grinding against stone, and then several minutes of silence before you once more hear stone grinding against stone. Hayes reappears, a wrapped bundle in his hand. You can't help but be a little giddy as he starts to unveil his prize. He does it slowly, the bastard. Dragging it out much longer than he needs to. Inside is a small gold ring. It glows a bright reddish-orange, designs snaking their way across the band. The centerpiece of the whole thing is a small ruby, imbedded within an arrow. The center piece is fluctuating wildly, pointing this way and that with no rhyme or reason.

"This, my friend, is something the Archmagos dubbed the Ring of the Heart's Des-" He breaks out into snickering. "Gods, sorry. Hayes can't say that with a straight face. Don't tell ol' Suresh Hayes told you this, but he is just crap with names. Really. Picks the most overplayed... anyway." He shakes his head, and puts the ring on gingerly. Immediately the arrow points towards the forge in the room, its shutters still closed. "The arrow always points towards what you want most in the world. Takes a bit of focus to get it pointin' anywhere specific, and a lot of the time it points towards random gibberish. Hell once it directed Hayes to a butchery. Great meal, sure, but kinda underwhelmin'. Still, just about as handy a tool as a man could ask."

He removes the ring, carefully. "Hayes tells you what, friend. He'll give it to you for free." You can just feel the 'but' coming on. "But, you'll have to do a job for me."

Man, I keep meaning to update that racial pastebin.

Your race, the Samja, vary in skin tone from blue-ish grey, to black, to solid brown. They typically have darkly colored eyes. Hazels, browns, that sorta thing. They vary in height from 6'0" at the shortest to 8' tall at the tallest. There's no appreciable difference in height between men and women but women tend to be slimmer than men.

You, in particular, are 6'7" (Above Average). That's the only thing really set in stone though.

“Well that's all well and good, but I'm going to need some details before I jump blindly into this.” Hayes scratches his head. “Well shoot, yah ask for details on a job but not when your shovin' magical artifacts onto your face? Anyway, Hayes caught word that someone figured out how to make ol' Elaudian Steel. Strongest stuff the world's ever been graced with. Made blades sharper an' lighter than anythin' you ever seen. Just as sturdy as traditional iron or steel though.”

“Hayes wants you to head into that gods forsaken jungle and get him that recipe. Now, it don't have to be tomorrow or next week. Hell, it don't even have to be next month, or the month after. Jus' as soon as you get that recipe, Hayes wants first dibs. Y'hear?”

You don't have to consider his offer very long. “Deal, on the condition you make me something nice.” That earns a good laugh from him. “Of course, friend. Of course Hayes'll make y'something nice. Y'don't get the ring 'til after you deliver though.” You wave him off, of course that's the way it goes. “Right right, now tell me more about this recipe. Got any clues?”

Hayes nods. “From what Hayes has heard it was discovered in the far eastern edge.” You raise an eyebrow. “Hayes knows how that sounds, sure. Nobody ever returns from that deep into the jungle. Listen though friend, Hayes has some artifacts that help out with this sorta thing. Suffice it to say somebody finally made it and jus' hasn't come back yet. Probably won't make it, in fact.” Well... that's ominous. “Hayes don't know how, why, or the extent to which civilization survives on the eastern edge, but it does. At least one village still kicks itself along after all these years. Y'need to find that village, find the recipe, and get yer ass back here.”

The deal concluded, you take your new staff and motion for Fulvia to follow you. Once you're in the hallway she speaks up softly behind you. “Do we return to the facility now, Dux?”

Kinda regret not speaking against that staff.

We still need to go collect our custom one + Chryssa's leather armour and such.

ALSO, Chryssa wanted the technician's armour integrated with her leather armour. We should've taken it before her armour was finished.

May be harder to do that now.

I really need to get my shit together and voice my concerns for debate.
>>
>>30905084
We can dual wield and the staff just has to be touching us for the bonus to apply.

If Chryssa wanted to get it integrated mid way through she should have done that herself.
>>
>>30905134
We could attach the staff to our leg and walk around like a gimp, or alternatively to our arm and while also holding our spear, our spear wasn't designed for enclosed spaces anyway.
>>
>>30905208
Or just strap it to our back? Our strap it to our back with vines because as long as we touch the staff we can freely control vines so it's like having an extra arm or two as long as we touch it?
>>
Well, on some level you knew this was coming. It would be better to just give it to her straight, in a place where she has little actual power, than wait until you're in some other Rhynian ruin and have her take the place over and try to kill you all, restore the Glory of Rhynia, or some other horrible outcome.

How is one even supposed to phrase this? You can't just shout that her empire is dead at the top of your lungs. For one, that would attract attention. Plus it would be insensitive, or whatever. Maybe it would be best to just not sugar coat it and tell it to her how it is. “Fulvia, the Rhynian Empire is gone. It collapsed a thousand years ago and all that's left is dozens of city states squabbling in the mud over resources. I'm not a Rhynian Officer... I mean, I'm not even human. My real name is Mikhael.”

Fulvia doesn't speak after that. Glancing back at her, she's flickering rapidly between somewhat solid-looking and an obviously fake projection that you can see right through. She still follows you with a sort of mechanical obedience but you don't think she's really all 'there' right now. Before you reach the stairwell up to your suite, she snaps once more back into proper focus. “Protocols indicate that, in the vent of societal collapse, all efforts must be taken to stabilize the empire. If that fails, the slate is to be wiped clean and the empire restarted with stored genetic stock.”
(1/2)
>>
She says this as if she memorized it by rote. Monotone, with a vaguely metallic twinge to her voice. Before you can start worrying she's about to go off and start killing people, she speaks again. “I have insufficient data to begin the restoration. Empire may exist in some altered form elsewhere.” Her voice resumes her usual, much more 'human' tone. “If you'd allow it, I would like to assist you until such a time I deem it necessary to leave.”

Well, in the words of your master. “What could possibly go wrong? Sure! You can tag along if you'd like.” She nods her head brusquely, but seems disinclined to speaking after that. You march your way up to the room and push the door open. “It's a little cramped in this room, what with there only being three bedrooms. You're a construct though so... do you even need sleep?” She shakes her head 'no'. “I do not need to charge or go offline at any point in this body. The power source on my back is enough to sustain me indefinitely.”

Well that's just great, you'll leave her to... guard the door, or watch the three of you sleep, or whatever it is constructs do at night. Then again, you probably won't be sleeping anyway.

You head into the bathroom, turning on the four faucets and tossing a cloth over the drain at the bottom so it can fill up. While you do so, you ask Fulvia a question. “So, besides sustain you indefinitely, what can your new body do, exactly?” She clears her throat, which strikes you as a useless gesture for a construct. “In addition to featuring a power source, the Administrator Unit is capable of expenditure of vys in both the metal and fire schools. It also comes with significant memory storage, full visage projection, speech, and the ability to wield a host of weapons and armor if so equipped.”

She nods her head primly as she finishes rattling off the list of things the robot can do. She finishes at about the same time the bath is done, so you sweep the cloth off the drain with a wave of your hand and motion for Fulvia to get out. “I'm going to meditate, but I'd like it if you could use that archeota we stored you in briefly to start snapping pictures of the books I've already finished. Those would be the metamagic scrolls Leaping and Blast, Grandmaster Rostam's Journal, and A Treatise on Advanced Water Magic by Master Yusef.”

She nods her head curtly and leaves the room, allowing you to strip off your armor and climb into the bath. You assume a comfortable pose and close your eyes, slipping into a meditative trance...

>>
>>30906572
I think both of them or at least one of them has a DC of 25.
>>
>>30906572
since meta scrolls are so fast to read, if we actually are allowed to read in library we should read all of them. we can then perform the rituals at our leisure and get a huge vys pool. plus metamagic is useful

it has its own DC.
>>
>>30906594
Then don't
>>
>>30906594
Does leaping have a cheaper DC since its similar to range?
>>
>>30906619
I said read not perform the rituals. there is no DC for reading a metamagic scroll, there is only a DC for performing the meditation needed to gain the ability, which we can do at our leisure after reading them
>>
>>30906637
leaping is a more advanced form of range, that would imply a harder DC. Also, it doesn't take that long so we can afford to fail a few times. +2 vys pool is real nice and helps us with meditation (since we can spend the +5 without passing out)
>>
>>30906637
No
>>
>>30906637
Leaping is actually DC 30. It's a complex metamagic. Blast is DC 25, it's a intermediate metamagic.
>>
So after the metamagic should we level up earth?(or nature)
>>
>>30906672
I say we spend more time reading than meditating while we are here. We can meditate on the road, to read on the road costs a fuckton of gold.

Instant refreshment, and would look cool as hell.
>>
>>30906733
Or just drink the water out of the air
>>
>>30906730
people bought the nature staff, of course they are behind nature. Also, staff gives us bonus to nature learning, and water does too, so we should learn it REAL fast with both combined.

>>30906749
if we are alone in the desert, yes.
if we are with company we should show off. like how the archmage makes furniture out of vines instead of just having premade furniture, its to look cool to your peers.

File: 1395121715017.jpg-(116 KB, 800x1000, Ice Throne.jpg)
116 KB
116 KB JPG
You start out, of course, by gathering vys from the surroundings. This area is saturated in ambient vys, though not to the same extent the Rhynian Ruin was. Then again, what did you really expect from a Vatis academy? This many magic users in one location is bound to accumulate vys pollution. Because of this, you fill your reserves much quicker than usual.
>Reserve: (22/22)

After you've gathered your vys, you start attempting a method of meditation you've only toyed with. First, you move yourself to the center of the bath and raise yourself up to the surface of water. Slowly, the ice creeps out over the rest of the pool, eventually sealing it off entirely except for holes to let the water from the faucets in.
>21/22 Vys

You find that it's intensely hard to keep the water from melting, since the hot water beneath it keeps weakening the ice you created. You have to constantly reinforce it, which while not hard is taxing. You get into the flow of maintaining your ice platform before you proceed to the next step of your plan, that is building your fortress.
>20/22

It starts off simply enough, you pull water from the faucets to ice over the rest of the floor, the walls, and the ceiling. Pretty soon the room is entirely encased in ice, slowly filling with steam as the temperature of the room drops. You start slowly pulling the ice down towards you, crafting an elaborate chandelier above your head. Then you turn the platform you're sitting on into a proper throne. You almost feel like some sort of Ice King, doing this.
>18/22
(1/3, or 4)
>>
Next you start fleshing out the room. The walls become intricately carved panels of ice, which you laboriously detail from the safety of your meditative trance. Then the floor becomes coated with a thin layer of snow, so nobody goes slipping and sliding across the ice. Pillars drip their way down from the ceiling, forming themselves into ornate columns crowned by depictions of ocean waves and the god Pani with arms spread wide. Finally, to top it all off, you craft yourself a suit of armor made of ice, and an ornate crown to go with it.
>16/22

Of course, now all you have to do is maintain it while you meditate. That's the real task here. You try to get into the rhythm of maintaining the now palatial (or perhaps, glacial) throne room but with this much to keep track of it becomes difficult. Should the floor beneath you melt, you'll go crashing through the ice into the hot water below. Should the rest of the room start to melt, the chandelier above you will collapse and land on your head.
>14/22

You're not going to get any actual meditation done at this rate, so in one big burst of Vys you try to lower the temperature of the room enough that it won't be constantly melting. For the most part, you think it works. It stabilizes most of the room enough that you don't have to keep close track of it. It allows you to realize that the steam in the air is just as good a source of water as the faucets, which makes maintaining the chandelier and the columns much easier.
>10/22

Finally you feel like you're making progress. You allow yourself a small break to create a glorified mannequin from the water and steam, having the 'servant' wipe your forehead and hold a cup up to your lips so you can drink. He melts away, sliding into the pool beneath you, and you start to feel an inkling of an idea at the back of your head.
>9/22
>>
There is water in everything. In you, in the plants, in the dirt, and in the air. Every living thing on the planet has water in it. Even the driest, cracked earth has some modicum of water in it. The only thing preventing you from harnessing that water is precision and efficiency, and if this throne room shows anything, it's that precision will come with proficiency.
>8/22

You ponder this while maintaining your creation. You must have kept it up for hours by this point, and you're starting to really get the hang of it. It's not really about how much ice you pack onto a point, it's not about brute force. It's about manipulating the steam and the hot water to keep the heat from really affecting the ice. You find it's much easier to move steam than water, you can compress it into a single water and guide it gently back into the bath, or simple collect it around the room, away from anything important.
>7/22

Plus in many ways, the ice sort of has its own rhythm to it. One part starts to melt, you reinforce it. As you finish there, you move on to another part. By this point it's all become very regular. As you can feel yourself starting to wake up it finally clicks. The key to efficiency is to simply follow the path of least resistance. The less you need to channel, the better off you'll be.
>Reserves: 8/23

... actually, I just realized, fire temple had ever-burning flame that was used by priests to meditate, i bet there is something in the water temple too we can use to meditate for faster learning. Furthermore, we should learn nature magic before heading out because the temple is huge and will take a while to search... but nature magic can massively increase our sensory ability and let us see many rooms simultaneously and rapid search a ruin for valuables

Keep in mind, Nature Magic's extrasensory abilities only work around plants.
>>
Sorry if we're shitting on your setting, Soma. But it's kind of hard not to make these connections. I enjoy both. Thanks for running.
>>
>>30907718
oh, fair point.
Although, i bet the water temple is situated on an oasis, so it should have plants growing in it
>>
>>30907721
Nah, I seriously love the Elder Scrolls games before Oblivion.. Honestly there are way more connections to be made than I initially thought. it's eery.
>>
>>30907740
>before Oblivion
I'm pretty sure everyone with a half functioning brain feels the same.

I never played the redguard one, and I've never seen anyone talk about it. Was it good?
>>
>>30907740
What else are your heaviest influences?
>>
>>30907792
Redguard is only worth the lore that it provides. Gameplay wise it's terrible.
>>
>>30907792
Nah, I mean. It was like Daggerfall in a lot of was except much less fleshed out and way more limited. The lore was decent, but even I overall I'd say not worth going back and playing.

I draw a lot from DUNE, in terms of the culture, ecology, and traditions of Pidjata and the Samjan race. I draw a lot from Isaac Asimov's Foundation novels, mainly as inspiration for the sort of rough underlying metaphysics of the universe. I also draw pretty heavily from Roadside Picnic. I'd have to say that's my main inspiration for the whole theme of ruin exploration and artifacts as well.

>>30907892
What was the most unexpected thing we have done in your opinion?
>>
>>30907934
Taking the job offered by Sadik is up there.

Going in to clear out the fleshy growth ranks pretty high up there. I think I mentioned I only planned to introduce Profectus later, as someone brought back by another adventurer.

Not choosing the Mystery Box in the first thread and going to Aleamond.

Those are the major things I can think of.

Hooray! Call the others to the bathroom so they can see our work of glory

I think they are still sleeping man

>Blue-ish grey
Shit, we could totally become the Ice King.

Predisposed to insanity and a master of water and ice. Yup

>>30908192
Except Ice King was normal until he wore the crown.

aw shucks we traded the dog construct. I wanted to ask Fulvia if she can remotely control it.

We should commission armor for her and get her some weapons.

Also, we should really focus on getting ranks in other Vatis schools and advance them at the same rate. Getting novice in nature would be easy and it would give us larger vys pool.
>>
>>30908412
We can give her our old spear, and maybe one of our swords
But yeah armor sounds good for her since I doubt we can repair her
>>
>>30908561
the command construct CAN wear armor...
>>
>>30908625
Yes yes she can. I said we should get her some. Are you misunderstanding something?
>>
>>30908656
I was agreeing with you
>>
>>30908701
K, sorry I'm kinda drunk. St Patrick's day and all
>>
>>30908561
Our old spear is kinda shitty considering the things we can afford.
We should find out if armor can be patterned for additional effects like weapons can.
>>
What if we were to tatoo the etchings that we put into our spear, into our self?
>>
>>30908833
Not sure about our self but Prof's arm could work
