You,re in the central plains of Tianna Island, trying to persuade their god, Yaraon, to let the volcano goddess Dancing Smoke pour her lava all over him.
...that came out wrong. But the plan is, or rather was, to flow lava through the plains and into the swampland that is Fair Folk land.

According to the plan, this should have been followed by a pincer attacks by the barbarian tribes of the north side of the island, and their two Lunar leaders, from the land, and by your pirate crews and water spirit allies from the sea.

Seems like no plan really survives first contact with the enemy. You had just managed to convince Yaraon to, uh, do the thing with Dancin Smoke, when bits of the swamp's thick fog have begun to detach and gallop inland, dragged around by invisible troops for cover: several small parties are entering the plains all over the area like this.

Your biggest worry, however, is another: namely, the giant snakelike being made entirely by what seems to be water and gold, some sort of titanic faerie war monster heading straight for you.

Think fast, Maka.

>Intercept the behemoth.
>Chase the war parties shrouded in fog.
>Fall back, try to rejoin with the Lunars.
>Stall for time.
>Avoid the behemoth and rush into the Wyld.
>Other?

Combined with:
>ask Yaraon and Smoke to flood the plains in lava.
>ask Yaraon and Smoke to follow you and support you.
>ask Yaraon and Smoke to attack the behemoth.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble recently Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She's in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata (DB), an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and half the island is controlled by paranoid Lunars. Fun times. Oh and the other half is under Fair Folk control and the Lunars want to remove it and you're helping. And the Fair Folk don't look like they want to be removed.

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zenith

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

Flooding the plains in lava would not help much now and I have no idea whether we could even damage the behemoth. Better to leave him to the more experienced lunars.

Infusing Essence in your limbs and instincts, you dash towards the slithering monstrosity, trailing golden light as you move.

The enormous behemoth has fully crawled out of the foggy wyldland: a snake made from colored water, reflecting the blue of the sky. A vast golden crown acts as its "head", joined with chains to large golden rings holding its body together, or perhaps binding it, or maybe acting as some sort of armor. You have trouble estimating the mercurial beast's actual height or length, since it seems to shift as it moves around. A black shadow is barely visible floating inside the watery part of its "head". Maybe a heart, or brain, or some sort of "core"? Or a pilot?

[Solar Hero Style. Essence: 4/5]

The large creature doesn't seem to have noticed you at first, but, despite its lack of eyes (or anything, really), you have the distinct impression that it has detected you once you move close enough to feel the little drops and sprays of water falling from its body.

Regis, it seems, has hidden in the tall grass. You don't see him anymore, but you feel he's safe, covered by Yaraon's domain...

...yeah, speaking of Yaraon and Dancing Smoke, you forgot to tell them anything. No time to think about that now, you'll have to hope they figure out things themselves. You have a giant monster to punch!

"...but how?" You mumble, looking up to its massive size.

>Punch the watery surface.
>Punch the golden rings.
>Try and break the chains.
>Dive into the "water" and swim around trying to find a weak point.
>Try and climb and jump up from ring to chain to ring and reach the crown.

"Alright." You look up at the giant behemoth's head.
The giant behemoth looks down at you.

You lift an arm, pointing a finger at it. "You're on."

Its shape shifts and moves around the head forming a sphere of water in what would be its forehead, along a large hole central to its crown, as if all of its watery mass was being concentrated there.

Seconds later, an insanely powerful beam of compressed water explodes from it. It swings across the landscape, slashing a narrow but deep chasm wherever it passes, like a supremely sharp knife cutting through the world, and slams into you.

[Health: 4/5]

The sheer pressure is enough to make you feel like you're about to be torn to pieces, each droplet of water impacting you faster and sharper than an arrow, and with more weight behind it than a mountain being dropped from the sky. Your clothes are shred to ribbons instantly, leaving nothing behind.

With a scream of effort, you force yourself to take a step against that supremely powerful current. The single most difficult step in your life.

The jet then dies out, its power exhausted, a second later, becoming a spray, then a mere sputter of water, then vanishing. It tore up the ground all around you, but you endured.

"I LIKED THAT TABARD!" You scream at the beast, which seems a bit puzzled by your continued existence. In response, you step up to it, plant your feet, ball up your fists, and land a straight, right jab on the golden surface.

The noise produced by your iron fists smacking against the ring is not metallic at all: it's more like smashing rocks: a loud, growling rumble that ends up with a web of cracks exploding across the glowing, polished surface of the monster's body part.

Then it explodes in a mass of shards flying in every direction, without any pull by gravity. The beast loses its footing, as part of its mass spreads out, no longer being channeled and held together, and its head falls much lower than it was before, held high and proud. It struggles for a moment, then the head just slams on the grass-covered ground, making it shake as if in an earthquake.

The closest clouds of mist actually halt their march out of the wyld. You imagine they must be surprised.

"...You're kidding me." You hear Yaraon's voice mumbling. You briefly see him, for a moment, emerging from the tall grass, before something pulls him back down.

Ignoring his screams of "I'm not mentally prepared! Give a moment-whargharbl", you turn to face the massive monster, which is trying to stand back up struggling against its own now-flaccid body, just as the misty clouds around you converge on you.

Bit by bit, the mist vanishes, revealing the true nature of the raiders: lizard-like-people, riding on lizard-like horses. The hobgoblins are armed with what look like primitive but brutal and effective weapons, and seem equal part astonished and enraged.

Under the enraged and horrified gaze of the lizard-people hobgoblins, you calmly walk up to the monster's crown, reasting heavily on the ground, its curved spikes half-embedded in it. The snake is trying to lift its head back up, but just as it begins to rise, you grab a corner of it and stop it.

"...Who said you could get back up?" You ask the behemoth.

As a reply, the faceless beast seems to turn to look back at you, despite its distinctive lack of eyes. Apparently not realizing the gravity of its situation, you see it begins to form another ball of water on its forehead, preparing another beam.

"I don't think so." You grin, grabbing the edge of the massive, castle-sized metal crown two-handed, so forcefully that your fingers sink into the bent metal like it were putty.

With Essence and adrenaline screaming through your blood, your heart beating like crazy, a surge of energy runs through every muscle of your body.

[Ten Ox Meditation. Essence: 3/5]

You slam your left knee into the monster's crown, and it explodes.

The shards and fragments of gold fly in all directions, flying through the air without curving or falling downwards. The closest lizardmen are shredded by the blast of metal shrapnel, the others scream and fall back from you, wounded and startled.

Then, the water that was contained within it follows, like a ridiculously over-pressurized water balloon finally popping.

Left alone with the ruins of the behemoth, you glance up to the hills, your naked body, glistening with water, clothed in a bright glow of golden light.

Arrows flying through the air, ambushes from the cover of the tall grass, and distant flashes of silver light tell you that the raid is being contained. The Fae's pre-emptive counterattack has failed. Further east, the volcano is rumbling and spewing fire and lapilli, then, under your eyes, a prodigious spray of liquid lava pours from its western side, running down the mountain.

"...beautiful..." You hear a voice mumbling from about around your feet, under a massive piece of shattered gold.

You kick the block aside, revealing what must have been the shadow riding within the behemoth.

And you find a humanoid fae, definitely a noble judging from its astonishing beauty. He has fair skin and golden-blonde hair, held by an elegant, colorful hat, well-coordinated with clothes fitting a rich, high-society dandy. For some reason, he's not just unwounded, but even perfectly dry. You notice that the water pooling all around actively avoids him.

"...That was beautiful." He's staring at you. "Beautiful." He keeps repeating, in a daze.

We literally own him if he surrenders his Heart Grace. He ceases to have any free will aside from what we tell him to do.

It will scare the shit out of a lot of people (understandably) and he still needs to eat dreams/emotions every now and then to keep from literally dissolving. Fae are - basically - vampires, in that they need a steady diet of something taken from living humans in order to survive.

They're fae. You can't "solve" things with them because they don't have free will to begin with.

Rolled 10

Could definitely work. If he surrendered his Heart Grace, we could turn him into our sock puppet to order his forces to surrender. Of course, there might be more nobles with their own forces involved in all this.

Still, capturing fae graces to use against other Fair Folk is literally one of the primary tactics of the warden faction of Lunars. Talon might even approve.

Technically, but they're rubbish at it, and lose access to basically 100% of their powers if they limit themselves that much.

This is an oversimplified explanation, but think of it this way. Fae need to spend 1 Essence per day not to simply evaporate. But they only way they get more is by soaking up emotions. In a heavily-populated area, they can reliably soak up about 1 Essence of emotions per day. Anything more than they and they need to actually take a bite out of someone's soul.

Oh. Normally it takes extended feeding to actually reduce someone to a husk, and they can heal up eventually as long as they aren't reduced to one. Just remember, the fae are literally shapeshifting eldritch horrors from outside of space and time who eat people's souls. You can control one using its Graces, but that doesn't change any of those qualities inherent to it, it just prevents it from acting under its own initiative. So, I'm strongly in favor of turning this one against its fellows.

You toss the block of rubble sideways, and stomp your foot on prettyboy's chest.

"Surrender your Heart to me, Fae." You command. If would be a lie to say he isn't tickling your fancy, but you rationalize it as mindtricks and glamour. It's not like he's a real person, even though he really does look like one.

"...I... I can't..." He doesn't seem to feel or react to the pain, and he's keeping a thousand-yard-stare on you.

"Why not?" You grind into his... ribs? Does he even have them? He feels incredibly soft to the touch.

"Y...you already conquered it." He smiles, revealing really creepy, overly long canines in an otherwise perfect human set of teeth.

"Consider yourself my prisoner then." You grab him by the collar and lift him up, slinging him over your shoulder like a sack of bricks.

"...yes..." he replies, with the tone of voice of a complete pervert getting his dirtiest wish satisfied. His voice, as sweet and beautiful and crystal-clear and melodious as it is, manages to creep you out.

As you're beginning to consider what your next move should be, you notice the lava flow being neatly channeled through the grassland, heading straight in your direction. It will be some minutes, maybe a hour until it reaches you, and another few minutes until the border of the Wyld.

While you're considering your next move, you hear a shrill cry pierce your ears, and a large vulture swoops down on you. You recognize it, of course.

It lands on your free shoulder, looks around, pecks the fae in his exposed abdomen (getting a brief scream of pain and surprise in response), then turns back into human Tia.

Who makes herself more comfortable by actually sitting down on your shoulder. "Hey." Then nods sideways at the fae. "Got a new toy?"

"First of all." You grab the fae back off your shoulder. He's hanging limply, with no energy or volition it seems. You shake him a bit.

"...First of all, give me your boots and jacket. Your thing destroyed my clothing, after all. It's only fair."

He calmly obeys, taking off his plated boots and then his jacket - while hanging from the collar held by you - and hands both to Regis, who helps you don your new outfit.

The boots are about your size, and are incredibly comfortable. The jacket is, too, but it's too narrow for you to manage to close across your chest: you have to keep it open.

"...Maka, you're dangerous." Tia says, after having jumped down from your shoulder to let you wear the fae's clothes. "Way too dangerous."

"Let's show his friends as well, then." You shake the fae some more. "You. Talk."

"My name is Garnet Skysea, a servant of Tarien Dorian, the Prince of the Black Marsh... until now." He smiles, still looking a bit stoned.

"Oh, he's the guy whose skull I want to drink out of." Tia remembers her oath. If you can call it that.

You have to admit that this Fae is obedient. "...How many other servants he has?"

"A castle. An army of soldiers. Other three nobles."

"This is the part where he tells us he was the weakest of the four." guesses Tia.

"I was." He admits.

"Told you." She stares into his eyes.

"Is he being tricky? This seems a bit too easy." You say, your suspicions aroused by the unusual cooperativeness of a soulless monster that just tried to kill you a moment ago (though you admit he was kind of bad at it)

"Leave it to me." She keeps her eyes locked into his. "Are you being tricky?"

"But tell me... if a lie is convincing enough, and you believe enough in it, and you repeat it long enough, and it's beautiful enough... and even you start believing in it... even you WANT to believe in it..." His eyes glance for a moment up at you, then back to Tia's. "...Then how can it not be true?"

She grabs his head, and stares into his eyes from so close that their eyeballs are practically touching. "Swear."

"I swear." He replies. "To be bound in this love, by the cup and the staff and the ring and sword, 'till my heart is unbound."

She lets go of him. "He's not being tricky. Or he's being especially tricky, but it's a tricky you can use." She pats her hands, like she just had to touch something dirty. "Would make a good addition to your harem of exotic concubines or something."

"...I don't have one."

Shrugging, you let go of your... new acquisition, apparently. His blatantly otherworldly presence makes you quite uncomfortable, but you have other things to worry about: the lava flow is about halfway through the plain.

There are still come fights going on, but it seems like most raiding parties have been ambushed and destroyed by the barbarians. You're fairly sure it's pretty impossible for them to not have seen the giant snake, though, so you wait.

About five minutes later, with a drilling noise, a hole opens in the ground next to you.

From it emerges... Zaan, a bit splattered in blood, riding a rhinoceros made entirely from soft packed earth.

"Hello there." He waves at you. "How did things go here?"

"Punched a behemoth." You nod at the shattered piles of goldstone lying to the side. "Owner apparently swore his love to me." You nod the other way, to Garnet, who is sitting on the ground at your feet. He looks up to acknowledge the Lunar, who replies by making a puzzled, confused, surprised noise with his mouth.

"...You must have really impressed him." He says. Then he gives a second look at your new outfit. "Nice jacket."

"Thanks." Garnet replies.

You look down at him. For some reason, he still has the jacket and boots you took off from him, like he somehow put back on exact copies while you weren't watching.

"Did he say anything interesting?" He asks.

You bring him up to speed.

"Huh. Seems like we really underestimated the Fae's power and readiness. Five nobles are... quite a bit. Talon was right."

"Talon?" You ask.

"He was the one who insisted for not attaching the Swamp until we were sure we seriously outnumbered any likely threat, for this precise reason: In case we were wrong."

"Wise." You nod. The lava is almost here.

"I should probably go and meet back up with him. He's busy hunting a particularly fast group of stragglers, he might need someone to cut off their retreat. By the way, Samiel's following the lava flow, if you're wondering."

You nod. "Well, I'm going to wait for the lava here. Good luck, Zaan."

He waves at you before diving back underground on his trusty steed.

Ah, I see what the issue is.

Opening any less than all of them is an unmitigated failure because the Seals were never all up. The way they work is that opening one causes its opposite to close. In color wheel terms, opening Red causes Green to close, and so forth. They just spent centuries shuffling them around and having no clue what they were doing.

Letting it be eaten by lava is going to put a bit of a cramp in that if we are already just waiting over here doing nothing.

Spirit one is worse than the exalted variants actually. Specifically, it lets the mortal make a roll at the end of a month to enlighten their essence, instead of just blasting it open instantly.

"...carry him somewhere safe, Tia?" You ask her. "It'll be all right." You add to him. "I have to meet with Samiel, and this could get dangerous."

"I'll bring him to the Bloodshark and them come back to look for you, I guess." She says, motioning to your butler to come to her. "What about your toy?"

"I'm staying with Maka." He says.

She sighs. "I don't need to make all the usual threats, I hope, Just... behave."

He nods.

As vulture-Tia flies away with Regis, the river of Lava flows like a tide of fire.

"Alright. Let's try this."

Bracing yourself against the impact and the heat, you let yourself being swept up by the molten rock.

You expected it to be a lot more liquid, but it IS molten rock after all: you find yourself sitting on the moving, shifting surface of the lava front. Tentatively, you stand up, and sink into the stuff, slowly, down to the knees. It's hard to keep yourself straight, but you manage somewhat. Good think your Powers protect you from any harm done to you from the nature of Creation itself.

Not too distant from you, Samiel is surfing the wave of fire as well, being also immune to fire thanks to his Aspect. "...Oh, Maka. What did I miss?"

"Giant water snakes." You shrug. "Crazy fae boys. Change of wardrobe."

He looks at you. As the flow takes you slowly towards the Wyld, he keeps staring and frowning.

"Maka, maybe now's not the right time, but there's a question that's been bothering me a lot." He says, turning his eyes down.

"Yes?" You ask him. You're pretty curious as to what it might be.

Which is a big part of why the Exalted were mandated to keep the gods below the Incarnae in line. And without the Solars around with powerful backing from the UCS to support them, the DBs basically had to resort to punching them back into line.
>>
>>30893501
>And we'll fix that. With dancing bitches.
Bringing out dancing bitches instead of human sacrifices doesn't change the fact that she originally wanted - and probably still wants - human sacrifice.
>>
>>30893513
>Gods aren't bound by human morality
Standards of divine morality also illegalized human sacrifice because heaven finds it insanely evil. Asking for human sacrifice is a crime punishable by death. What she's asking for isn't even okay by divine standards, let alone human standards, and that's assuming you don't hold gods to basic standards of compassion.
>>

Not really, mostly they find it wasteful and don't want to encourage it. Then again, we haven't been to heaven yet, so there's a good chance that it's legal in this version of Creation.
>>

No, they find it evil. The UCS, for example, specifically forbade it because he found a desecration of virtue.

Which, admittedly, is fucking weird, since the Dragon Kings were super into human sacrifice to the UCS.

She's not "evil", she's a volcano who was once one of the most powerful gods and now she was moved to rot in some department at the end of the world, downgraded, out of the "big game" that other gods, her previous colleagues had and even after being downgraded such horribly, she still has less than some a lot younger and less capable co-workers.

It's like she was a CEO of a big corporation and suddenly she was moved to an office in Bangladesh where she is just a normal accountat that has to stay after hours and at Christmas and she doesn't even get candies and 13th payment as rest of her colleagues due to the "different policy of her department". Think how frustrating it must be. Oh and to add to the depressed image of it she is working alone, isolated from other colleagues who honestly don't like her/hate her guts (Yaraon). Oh and that young, interesting guy with nice buttocks she's interested in secretly thinks she's a crazy cat lady going for his money.

Now you understand how pitiful her situation is? ;__;
>>
>>30893535
She's not getting it anyways, so stop hanging on it so much. In fact, we could make it a crusade to see that the practice is eradicated in the west. It's not like the Celestial bureaucracy is coming down to put these terrestrial gods on trial at all. Their silence on it is as much an approval of the practice as anything could be.

What the laws of heaven say and what is just doesn't always line up perfectly.
Did you know that in the eyes of heaven, divorce requires the consent of the person with the higher essence, unless one of them is a solar, in which case his consent is required.
That's right, if you married some asshole god and wanted a divorce but he had higher Essence, you can't leave him.
There's also judges that are also persecutors AND collect 1/4 of the fees the impose, so they always find you guilty.
>>
>>30893626
>She's not getting it anyways
It's the fact that she asked for it in the first place. She's at LEAST as evil as the Raksha - at least they actually do need to eat human souls to survive, she just wants it as a bonus. The only redeeming quality she has is that she's willing to play ball. She's our ally, but that doesn't change that she's evil as fuck.

You ride the wave of lava into the fog.

You're surprised to realize that the fog was nothing more than a wall in fact, a few meters deep, but it immediately vanishes to leave space to a rather alien landscape.

As far as the eye can see, a field of pointy, spike-shaped monoliths greets your arrival, lazily rising out of the wet, soggy terrain and drifting upwards, into the surreally-colored clouds.

The terrain hisses and sprays jets of vapor as the lava rolls over it, and the lava becomes a lot more unstable as bubbles of high-pressure steal form on it and resurface violently. Samiel seems fairly balanced, but you're a bit out of your element, and have to struggle to keep your footing and land face-down in magma a couple of times.

Seriously, being able to swim in magma without burning was surreal enough for you.

Finally regaining your posture, you look around better. There are, here and there, sparse groups and squads of lizardmen in panic. Some loose a few arrows at you, but their shots are unaimed and wildly off-mark.

"I think we caught them by surprise." Samiel states the obvious.

These lizardmen don't seem to have villages or settlements. They don't seem to have any indication that they farm or anything like that, either. They probably sustain themselves exclusively off the Wyld energies? This place is way more bizarre than you first thought, and you suspect it isn't over yet.

"Garnet." You say, suddenly naming the fae you had forgotten about up to this moment, only to see him standing next to you on some sort of silver-like metallic disc that floats on the magma, inlaid with a fine etching of a motif of chains and rings. "...Where did you get that?"

"Just now." He smiles. "Need a ride?"

"...Is that the crazy fae boy you mentioned a minute ago?" Samiel is worried.

"Yeah. So, Garnet. You said there are other three nobles."

"Them, and Tarien Dorian, the Prince of the Black Marsh. All three of them are his servants." He explains.

EF already said he's taking a hatchet to Cannon, so I'd say conservatively that there's at least a 30% chance of human sacrifice being outright legal. Mostly I was just pointing out that using the standard setting as justification for any argument isn't very convincing when we know much of Cannon's already been jettisoned.

No, he said that 'not everything' would match canon, but he's overall actually cleaved extremely close to it so far.

So you're just making shit up.

Evil is not an absolute value in Exalted, so get off your damn high horse already. Is what she wanted wrong and considered outside what is acceptable for most terrestrial gods? Yes. Is it a common practice in the region she's being deprived of? Yes. It's an easy, powerful, and fast way for such an entity to get quintessence. If this were set closer to the Realm she'd have been dickpunched by immaculate monks into accepting she wouldn't get it, but out here the only reason is that the ruling DBs loathe the idea.
>>
>>30893854
So you're saying that Maka should be okay with someone having wanted random humans to be murdered for celestial bribery because 'lol moral relativism?'

They only need souls when in creation, so they're eating humans so they can play with the fun and fascinating thing

The reason most Raksha are actually in creation is because horrible Wyld predators will eat them if they don't at least stay in the bordermarches. Not because they want to play in a sandbox full of mortals.

I thought Raksha were the horrible Wyld predators.

By that Maka is also horrible and evil person despite her appearances - casually killing a pirate because she can is one of the examples.

You rub your temples. "That... doesn't make any sense."

"It does." The fae nods. "Trust me."
