You snarl at him, but glance around. The creature seems drunk with pain and slothful. When he takes a laborious snap at you, you jump back and take off running through the trees. Your father and Schatten are confused at first, but know to follow behind.

“Dirty, foul, stinking wolf. I’ll gut you. Roast you. Snap your bones till the marrow drips out. I’ll rip your skin off and hang it from the glaciers. And that’s just the body,” Taurini shouts as he chases after you, his burning bulk swaying from side to side and smashing through trees like twigs. “When I get to your soul, that’s when the fun begins.” He laughs as you scramble ever higher over the rocks and ice.

The trees and shadows around you are thinning out as you climb, chasing after the sun. Your father stops at the top of a particular boulder, glancing at the rose colored sky. Rather than follow you, he jumps off along another path and finds his own way down, and Taurini ignores him. “Such a delectable morsel of energy. Once I rip it from your heart, I’ll take my time to chew it, to savor every piece of it. I’ll see if I can taste every legend you’ve slaughtered on your path of blood, you vicious little monster.”

Distracted by climbing the slope, you don’t notice as he pulls his head back to swell in air. You look back only in time to see the crackling inferno roar after and sear your fur to the skin, but the flames are cooling, his power waning.

When you recover, you see that Schatten disappeared into the shadows during the attack, and you are well beyond the trees now. You won’t have help for this, but you won’t need any.

“Cease running away your vermin,” Taurini roars as you turn back on him.

“He wasn’t running, he’s just smarter than you,” Alicea says as you leap from the mountain side. His body is aflame, but it is but an illusion. Your teeth are real. Your claws are real.

You his chest and knock him to the ground as you rip off chunks of writhing fire. You rip and tear as he thrashes and scream in agony. It’s within him, somewhere, a still beating heart. Taurini’s screams have digressed to the pained screeching of prey that has already been gutted.

You rip through the bones of his rib cage as he tries to throw you off. And then you find it.

You clamp your teeth around the beating core of fire inside his chest, shredding it in your fangs as morning’s first light washes over him. Taurini screams as a great conflagration erupts around you, but the flames are cool. The heart in your mouth burns away to ash and joins the swirling updraft as his body burns away. You throw your head back and howl as you feel his legend pass unto you.

You couldn’t save the wolf that loved you, but you did save your pack. You took hold of a territory and wrested it from all else, fighting for it with tooth and claw. Starvation could not best you. Winter cannot threaten you. Humans will fear you forever.

Given the passing months and years, you solidified your hold on the territory, thinning out the dangerous legends and assimilating the lesser ones into your pack. You had several strong litters with Umbra and helped Schatten establish his own territory on the border of your own.

Alicea helped you establish a deal with the dominus of the villa, your protection in exchange for livestock, and the whisperings of your legend in the ears of his visitors till you were certain that people for thousands of leagues in every direction had heard of you.

The war in the south continued, and gave you protection from hunters as you nurtured your legends. Immortality came quickly, but not for your pack. At last, you managed to craft a body for Alicea to inhabit as she shared in your immortality.

By the time that hunters would have come to challenge you, you had already bequeathed your great territory to your numerous offspring, and ventured beyond the map where you are worshipped as a god.

The last glimmer of the vision fades from your eyes. The last of your air escaped your lungs some time ago, washed away by the freezing river. You body is bloodied and broken, the cold sapped away the last of your strength.

You had the spark of fate in your soul, but you lost everything in the river. Your body gets trapped against the ice, leaving you to die, alone and afraid.
