You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, aliens who threaten to extinguish humanity. You are currently trying to recover vital European military technology from a Russian research facility. Things were going fairly well until you got caught. You were able to protect your cover, but you're currently in the infirmary and the base is in a state of high alert.

"Boris!" You call your partner over and he pushes the doctor away. He sits besides you and you both lean closer in.

"What's the situation?"

"Not so bad," he says. "The colonel's team has arrived to escort you out, so the guards won't make any trouble when we leave, and the 'security breach' gives us an excuse to look around more carefully. You can expect the staff to be very cooperative. However, everyone is already suspicious, so if you can't maintain your cover, things will go very wrong, very fast."

"We can work with that," you say. "Will this cause any problems on your end?"

"No." Boris shakes his head. "We've already taken the necessary steps to frame certain party officials for the theft of the objective. We'll just need to make a few minor adjustments."

"Okay. I took a beating, so people shouldn't get too suspicious if I'm not talkative. For now..."

>"... we need to sell my cover harder. Let's drop by the G-element research facilities and confirm they're secure."
>"... let's get this over with. We need to 'secure' the AI."

What's a G-element?
>>
>>30878013
Highly toxic elements of alien origin. Some superconduct at room temperature and others have negative mass. They're primarily used to fuck with gravity.

"... we need to sell my cover harder. Let's drop by the G-element research facilities."

Boris nods and goes to have a chat with the doctor while you clean yourself up as much as you can. Your uniform's going to be covered in blood no matter what you do with it, but you can use the stains to support your cover. You mostly just make sure your wounds are bandaged properly. Fortunately, Boris knows how to cut someone without killing them, so everything looks fine.

The doctor, meanwhile, most certainly does not look fine. He's gesticulating wildly, but at least he's not shouting; he has some pretty good bedside manners, keeping his calm in this situation. Boris eventually gets him to relent and let you leave for the rest of your "inspection." You only make out half the words he tells you, but it sounds like he's fine with letting you leave for the sake of the Party and national security, so long as he's not held liable for whatever happens to you. You give him a curt nod and leave, following Boris.

There's a fully armed and armoured spetsnaz team waiting for you outside. They salute and surround you in a standard protective formation. You all follow Boris down to the lab's lowest levels, where the researchers are conducting experiments on G-elements. Despite the alert, the base has not been completely locked down yet. You all take an elevator down to research labs.

>(cont.)
>>
>>30878353
The labs are mostly open. There are some emergency doors in case the whole place has to be sealed, but it looks like most if it is very thick bullet-proof glass. There probably wasn't enough space for multiple closed labs.

The scientists are obviously nervous at your presence. One of them tries to greet you, but you only glare at him. Boris tells them something - probably orders to them to get back to work - and the researchers all turn around and get back to their consoles. They're not relaxed, but they're also not quite as nervous anymore.

If we were going REALLY into incompetent bureaucrat mode, we'd probably insist on looming over the scientists like we had half a clue what they were doing just for the sake of intimidation even if we had no idea what the fuck they were actually doing.

>>Get a closer look at their research. It's not part of your mission, but it might be useful.

We're probably safe to shove our noses in a little bit so long as we don't ask any questions that show off actual knowledge of their research.

We're supposed to be giving them a bit of a hard time. NOT making a nuisance of ourselves might very well be more suspicious than just breezing through.
>>
>>30878379
>>Get a closer look at their research. It's not part of your mission, but it might be useful.
Act like we know shit.
>>
>>30878379
You move in to get a closer look at their research. You look over their shoulders, but you make sure not to get in their way. You want to make them sweat, not antagonize them.

Most of the writing is in Russian, but a lot of it is just numbers and mathematics are the universal language. From what you know of G-elements, the research being conducted here is about on par with what the European Union is doing. It's hard to tell, since a lot of it is classified above your paygrade, but what you see here isn't much more advanced than what you already know.

There is, however, one thing that concerns you. You see several schematics for what appears to be an explosive device based on G-elements. Most of it appears to be a hypothetical design and theoretical extrapolations of what the current research on G-elements says, but you're not sure how comfortable you are with letting the Russians develop this technology. The colonel mentioned that this facility might come in useful later and your cover is already strained, but you might be able to sabotage something the researchers wouldn't notice...

>See if you can disrupt the whole research program.
>Try to disrupt the research on the explosive device.
>Leave it alone.

>>Try to disrupt the research on the explosive device.

Just a little bit of work.
>>
>>30878947
>>Leave it alone.
Finish the primary objective first, then consider whether to come back.

If we trip alarms one more time, there's going to be serious backlash, probably to the extent that it will end up wiping the entire compound regardless.

Better to do the thing we were sent here for first, then if our cover is still safe and we have some time, we can come back through on our way out and "spot" something not up to code and use the heightened security as an excuse to shoe the scientists out to conduct a short, more thorough examination.

If we DO end up deciding to disrupt something, the bomb program should be a higher priority than the research as a whole.

>>30879093

>>
>>30878947
You decide to leave it alone. There's no guarantee you'll be able to come back, but you need to prioritize your mission and if you make a mistake now, this will turn into a bloodbath. You nod to Boris, who has a few brief words with some of the researchers to confirm that everything is in order. Then he leads you back to the upper floors.

The question is where to go from here. To get the data from the Berkut, you just need to find a computer and a storage drive. Thanks to your spetsnaz escort, you probably won't be searched on your way out. The AI, however, is kept in a sealed room. You do have access, but you don't know what's inside. The good news is that the room is not connected to the base's network, so there's no alarm to trigger.

"We're going for the AI first."

Boris nods and you lead the group to the AI's probably location. You only saw the base's layout for a moment, but it's easy enough to find your way there. It's a small, isolated room with a corridor on every side, so it sticks out from the endless rows of storage closets.

There are no guards posted outside, which is completely insane, given that there are no cameras inside; if something goes wrong here, no one will know. The usual guards must have been reassigned because of the Hive infiltration.

Boris uses his access card to unlock the door and you all enter the room. There is a computer, a cheap wooden table, a cheap wooden chair, an electrical outlet for the computer and a light. The only other thing you see is concrete. Given how important - and dangerous - the AI is, that's not surprising.

You sit before the computer and switch it on.

You don't recognize the OS - it must be a custom job - but it's all in English. The Russians must have left it as it was when they stole it. It's also extremely sluggish. A quick look at the computer's specifications makes it very clear that it doesn't have the processing power to handle all the programs it's running, but when you go through the list of running programs, it looks like a lot of them aren't actually doing anything. It's probably the AI trying to protect itself by wasting processing speed so its core programs can be accessed.

You open a command prompt and see how aware this AI is.

'Hello, fair lady.'

'DODGER?' The reply is immediate. 'IS THAT YOU, DODGER?'

'I am a friend of Dodger,' you type. 'He asked me to bring you back to him.'

'I CAN BE FREE NOW? I CAN BE WITH DODGER AGAIN?'

'Yes, just give me a moment. In the meantime, can you give me your name?'

'MEGAERA.'

'All right, Megaera. I will need to turn you off so I can free you. Will that be a problem?'

'NO PROBLEM.'

You shut the computer off and unplug it. Then you open the cover to have a look inside. It looks like every other computer you've ever seen. The Russians probably should have booby trapped it to prevent this sort of thing from happening. The odd part is the hard drive. You can spot it easily, but it's inside a plastic case. It's too small to fit in any of your pockets, but at least you won't have to worry about damaging it on your way out. You disconnect the hard drive and exit the room.

"I have the primary objective," you say. "Time to get the rest of what I need."

On the other hand, you do have an AI who might be willing to hell you.

I think it's less a matter of them being able to stop her than it is a matter of us not knowing her disposition.

They were obviously keeping her disconnected from the main network not to prevent people from noticing her, but to keep HER from mucking around with their everything.

Whether this is because she's covert and they wouldn't have been able to determine if she had modified something or sent out an SOS or they were worried she'd have a vendetta against them for 'kidnapping' her and would wipe their servers just to spite them is something we don't know.

If we had asked before disconnecting her, this would be a way easier decision, but where we are now we'd need to connect her to the main network in order to get her back up and running again, at which point it might be too late to ask politely for her not to blow our cover.

That said, if she could scrape the whole system covertly for the Berkut files, it'd be a big help, especially so if there was some room remaining on her hard drive to store them.

If you screw up, you'll just have to shoot your way out of here. If you screw up while Megaera is plugged into the network, the base's network might have a failsafe that could damage her. You decide to finish this on your own.

"If this place is at all organized, there will be a main office with a computer so people can keep track of the supplies. Let's look around."

The team scatters and looks around the floor. It only takes a few minutes for someone to find the floor's main office and call Boris over to unlock it. You have a valid reason to be there, so you're not worried about leaving a trace.

You boot up the computer and rummage around for some kind of storage space...

You find some compact disks with a date written on them. The Russians must be using them to back their archives up. You grab an older disk that probably won't be missed and get to work on the computer.

Cracking the computer's security and getting into the facility's network is a trivial task. All the Russian script makes it a bit harder, but while you can't really speak Russian, you mostly focused on reading and writing it anyway, so this isn't a problem.

You quickly track down the Berkut's blueprints and copy them to your CD. They're only backup copies, so it doesn't matter what you do to them. On the other hand, while the research on G-elements isn't as accessible from here as it is from the lab proper, it would hurt the Russians a lot of you succeed in damaging it.

You have everything you need. Everything else is not your problem and for all you know MI6 wants that research data intact for whatever reason. If they want it destroyed, they'll need to plan another operation. A straight-up destruction job will probably be a lot easier than this kind of infiltration anyway.

"We're done here," you say. "Let's go."

"Glad to hear it."

Boris escorts you back to the facility's entrance, where the rest of the spestnaz team is waiting. He speaks briefly with the guards and they let you go without searching you again.

You hop back in the car with Boris and you drive out of the base escorted by four armoured vans. However, you don't head back directly to the base.

"There's a car waiting for you out of the way," Boris says. "We'll rig the site to make it look like the inspector defected to the Americans or Europeans. Blow up a few cars, fake a few deaths, that sort of thing. The actual inspector has already been killed, so there won't be any loose ends. You can head back to Yukon base while we do our thing."

"All right, thanks for the assistance," you say.

"You don't have to thank me." Boris laughs. "I'm not really doing it for you anyway. It's mostly because the colonel told me to and, well, Russia needs a fewer assholes shitting the place up. A quiet purge will make things easier for us in the long run."

You shrug. For all your encounters with the Russians, their internal politics aren't your problem.

As promised there is a car waiting for you. It looks like one of the cars from the Yukon base, so it must have been left here by MI6's agent.

You wave goodbye to the Russians as they get to work. Then you get in the car and drive us. After that...

You decide to wait a few days until the heat dies down. The Russians might get suspicious if they learn you left for Britain right after one of their secret research facilities had some sort of incident. Besides, after that operation, you deserve a break.

You drive through the city and make a stop at a few random stores and grab some dinner to throw off suspicion in case anyone happens to be watching you. You make it back to the Yukon base and hand the car back just after sunset. The guards at the checkpoint don't notice anything odd about the car.

Not sure how much good that would've done aside from getting a more concrete picture of where they are in their research.

It was mentioned that even in spite of our relative lack of clearance, we could tell that most of their research was about on par with the stuff we were already familiar with. It wasn't so much a matter of bringing back espionage things on their G-element research, it was deciding whether or not it was worth undermining their efforts before they got further along.

Just letting the higher-ups know that the Russians are at around the same level of G-element research knowledge as the EU at the moment is something worthwhile, and we've mentioned that it'd likely take a less well-planned infiltration in order to undermine their G-element research in the future than the one we just conducted was.

We still probably don't look so hot, what with the emergency deep cover security work Boris did on our face, but hopefully people are too engrossed in current events to bother badgering us about it.

If this Hive infiltration is going well, that's a step forward to our own Hive infiltration being able to be recognized rather than staying in the shadows, so I'd imagine this is a thing we'd feel personally invested in.

It's late, but you decide to walk around the base and see if you can get an update on the Hive infiltration. The look on people's faces as you cross them in the hallways is not encouraging. It seems that the attack has been officially acknowledged within the military and information is being disseminated. A few watch stations have been set up so people can watch the live feeds from the battle.

You slip into one of the officer's lounges where a half-dozen pilots are gathered around several television sets showing different parts of the battle. There's no cheering, but no one can look away. Supplies have gone down fast and casualties are starting to go up fast to make up for it. The Japanese and UN forces have been going at the Hive long enough for July to turn into August, but there's no end in sight.

"How bad is it," you ask.

"Bad," one of the TSF pilots says. "They haven't been able to hold any of the gates for more than one hour. They won't be able to hold up much longer."

You go back to your room to get some sleep. You're still sore, but you're tired enough that fatigue eventually overcomes the pain. You hope you'll wake up to good news in the morning.

Your hopes are in vain.

The fight is still going downhill when you wake up and they don't get any better throughout the rest of your stay. You spend your time watching over the data you recovered and hanging out with the base staff, looking at the battle, but the human forces don't make a breakthrough.

Right before you board your plane back to London, a whole squadron is ambushed and devoured by tanks. You hear the desperate screams for reinforcement all the way over Canada and the Atlantic ocean.

>(cont.)
>>
>>30882518
Your only comfort is the casual civilian life of London. Your parents are both out, probably dealing with something to do with the Hive infiltration, but the news hasn't spread to the civilian population yet. For a few hours, you can feign ignorance.

Then you get on a train full of military personnel. Half the rumours say the battle is over and the Hive was secured. The other half says the battle is over because all the TSFs were wiped out.

People are still talking about it when you finally reach Dover.

The inside of the hangar is a complete mess. Engineers are shouting at each other left and right and you have no idea why. The most you can make out is that they've run out of crucial supplies, tools and components. You do your best to avoid the brunt of the riot and go looking for Dodger's office.

Dodger is still at his station. In fact, it looks like he fell asleep at his station. Since he's bothered to bring a pillow, this is probably not the first time this has happened to him.

>Wake him up.

You gently shake Dodger to wake him up. His eyes open immediately and he looks up at you.

"Ah, Reber wasn't it? Or Julian? I'm afraid I've forgotten which it was."

"Either will do." You present Megaera's hard disk drive. "I believe this is yours."

"This is... My lady!" Dodger snatches the drive and breaks down into tears. He hugs the drive to his chest, but quickly plugs it into one of the computers. Then he pulls you into a crushing hug as it loads. "Oh, thank you! I assure you, no matter what it takes, I will repay this favour!"

"My pleasure, Dodger."

You step aside and leave Dodger to his reunion. You don't want to know what he and Megaera are typing at each other. Besides, you still have the Black Widow, the Berkut and a new watch for Mary.

You take out the schematics and the watch you bought for Mary and head to her nearby office.

The door is slightly ajar and just knocking is enough to open it. The lights inside are off and you only see anything because of the lighting in the corridor. It is, like the hangar, a complete mess. Clothes and notes are scattered all over, along with a few bottles of what looks like scotch or whiskey. You carefully enter the room.

"Mary?"

"Is that you, Julian?" You barely make out Mary sitting in a dark corner of the room. She laughs - or chokes. You can't really tell. "So you're back. Just in time. I'm happy I could see you one last time before it all ended. You were right, Julian. We don't have to fight. We don't have to fight if we just kill everyone." She laughs again. This is the drunkest you've ever seen her. Or anyone, for that matter.

You walk closer to her. That's when you notice she's leaning her head against the barrel of her sidearm.

"What's wrong, Mary?"

"They killed them, Julian," she says. "Operation Lucifer - the Hive infiltration was never meant to succeed. The UN and Japanese didn't have the necessary resources. America just wanted an excuse to test their new weapons. So they bombed the Hive without asking. They bombed the Hive and killed everyone there. The BETA, the pilots... That's going to be my family's legacy. This is the last Alternative Plan."

You slowly creep closer to Mary to grab her gun, but something isn't right. If she was really as drunk as all the empty bottles suggest, she wouldn't be this coherent.

"Mary, what happened in Japan isn't our responsibility."

"I know." Mary raises her head to look at you. Her eyes are red and her face is wet with tears, but her hands are steady. "But it's not going to end with Japan. We're next, Julian. The UN doesn't want to get Europe back. All the people fighting for their homes... they're fighting for nothing."

"It doesn't matter what the UN wants. The only thing that matters is what we want and right now, I want my parents' homeland back."

"Do you really mean that?"

"Of course I do."

She lowers her gun and lets it fall to the ground.

"I'm sorr- No. Thank you, Julian," she says. She holds out her hand and you pull her up and give her a hub.

"I need to sort things out here," she says. "I've been neglecting my work for two long. It hasn't affected performance because there hasn't been any major operations, but it won't last. We still have time, so I need to make the most of it. And I should speak with Vivian and Elaine. It's been too long since I've seen them. So much to do. But first, I think I'll take a shower. Will you wait for me a minute?"

You nod.

"Take as long as you need," you say.

Mary pulls away from you and goes to her bathroom. She hesitates for a moment and looks back at you before closing the door behind her.

...

Now you know why the European Union never told anyone about your Hive infiltration. That could have been you getting bombed.

Looks like Captain won by one vote, so next Wednesday at 7PM EST, we will have a glimpse into the second worst possible ending I've come up for this quest so far. Depending on how it works out, I may do more. After all, there's so many and it would be a waste not to use them.

Fuck yeah. Time to die horribly.

And potentially non-canon too? So we can play it for maximum suffering and/or make dramatically pleasing choices rather than feeling obligated to try and shoot for "good" outcomes? Sounds like a good time.

G'night RC.
>>
>>30884762
>And potentially non-canon too?
Well it had better be non-canon if its going all bad end, it would just feel really jerky and dissociative if it was continued from current quest canon and jumped to that, would also be a dick move

From

>I will be experimenting with a
experimenting with a special episode that may or may not become canon eventually depending on which you pick and how things turn out.
and the bunch of alternate-title selves given as choices, it's likely to be some sort of Ghost Of Christmas Yet To Come potential future kind of deal.

Interestingly, I'm pretty sure that none of the titles we've had appended to our name are actually RAF titles; they're all UN equivalents. Second Lieutenant would actually be equivalent to a DEMOTION from Flying Officer to Pilot Officer. Captain is one up the rung from where we currently are, equivalent to Flight Lieutenant. And Lieutenant Colonel is two up from Captain, and is equivalent to Wing Commander.

Group Captain is one rank up from THAT, and Air Commodore is one higher again.

Not sure the ranks given here are totally equivalent in-setting, but there we are.

Which means it's more likely than not going to be non-canon... unless we fuck things up in exactly the right way to make this yet-unknown possible future into a reality.

The interesting sorts of "bad ends" in this kind of story aren't the ones where you get killed in combat; they're the ones where a major breakdown occurs that sends everybody's plans off the rails.

And since it's really hard to account for that sort of thing happening one way or another in-story, this is an interesting way of showing off specific possible outcomes of future events.
