The giant blight demon has been dealt with, and the evil wasp woman inside has been driven away, though you failed to slay her. The Adventurers are hard at work re-establishing themselves in the city. Tomorrow is Enlil's festival, with Sin's festival happening a month after that. You have that long to prepare some kind of prank to please Ishtar.

After kissing Mr. Clicks goodnight, you burrow into your pile of straw mattresses and try to think of ideas for stuff to do. You wonder whether it's a good idea to please one god by offending another. You don't think most gods have a sense of humor. From what you've seen, Ereshkigal certainly doesn't. You realize it's been a while since you've traveled to her realm in your dreams.

> That's probably for the best. Your place is among the living.
> You wonder what they've been up to. They're nice to you, and they understand your new hungers better than humans do...

I'm not super stoked about the hunger and all that, but the last time we saw them we told them we were going off to a huge battle.

Least we could do is tell them we're fine.

You suppose that they're worrying about you. At the edge of sleep, when it feels like you're falling, you let yourself drop.

The underworld feels different to you after you've survived your curse. The blue light from below is less wondrous and more a reminder of the people you'e killed. You hope you won't have to see any of them again. You feel cold. The cracked plates on your back still hurt.

The rocky expanse the scorpionfolk have staked out for themselves is still divided into two camps, but the atmosphere is less tense than before. Some of them are milling about in the open ground between the two camps. The large female who you've talked to before is overlooking them from one of the camps, near the makeshift statue if Ishtar.

I'm thinking of making a scavenger hunt with hints on top of god statues so the priests have to climb them.

after that, maybe we'll see what the people in the middle are doing. Hopefully scorpifights are available.

If they're getting along with each other, that's good.

While we're here, I wan't to ask the proper name for our kind. 'Flesh Eater' is a slur or something and 'Scorpion people' isn't a real name.

That sounds hilarious. But what would we steal for them to find, and could the hunt be made kinky in anyway? Ishtar would defiantly like it better if we made it a little kinky.

Idunno. Some trinket of theirs that they value, but isn't SO valuable that losing it would be horrible forever.

though, hunzuu could just keep all the trinkets and the last note could say "Hunzuu has the items. Sorry about that. Tee hee!

You skitter over to Ishtar's camp. A few of the scorpions there recognize you, and you hear some talk among the scorpions who aren't busy sparring or digging burrows, talk of "the living one" and "the one who will save us." You seem to have brightened the dour mood a little.

The huge female smiles at you and turns her head. She'd been standing on a ridge, surveying the cluster of scorpions between the two camps. "I knew you'd survive, little sister. Our strength goes with you into battle. Have you made any progress in finding the gates?"

"Well, no..." You explain the business you've been up to, how the battle in Turtak led to a truce, what you've found out about Pazuzu and the pieces of him, and how you saw Ishtar and promised to do something for her in return for the location of treasures in the eastern mountains.

She looks very pleased. She takes your claw in her own. "You have Ishtar's favor. This shows that I was right about her. We have never been closer to our goal! Beseech her to break open the seven gates. She has the power."

> "I will when I think the time is right. She'll get mad if I presume to ask too early."

"I will when I think the time is right. She'll get mad if I presume to ask too early."
She takes your claw in both claws and looks down at you seriously. "Don't wait too long. Though I have hope that she will save us, I'm no fool. I know she never remains interested in anything for long. We must act before she chooses some other race to fancy."

"I guess... I don't know... is that all I'm good for? Can we just talk? I missed you."

That gives her pause. "Oh... of course, little sister. You're very alone up there, aren't you? The humans think only of how they can put you to use. We should be better than that. We are your kin now."

>"Well, I wouldn't go that far. I have lots of friends, humans and other kinds of monsters. They're kind of my family now. You're more like a teacher, I guess."

"Well, I wouldn't go that far. I have lots of friends, humans and other kinds of monsters. They're kind of my family now."

She sighs. You think she's despairing inwardly. "So this is the shape that our struggle will take. We could break any army on the field, but that can't save us now. Instead our salvation rests on our ability to hold the interest of a hatchling girl."

"Who are you calling a hatchling? I'm 13. I'm basically a woman."

She beckons you to follow her down the ridge to the gathering between the two camps. "Come this way."

You follow her to the gathering. It's mostly older adults, a few of whom have uncomprehending children in tow. They're telling stories to each other in low tones and making bitter oaths to themselves.

"They are mourning Suusandar," the statuesque woman explains. "He faded not too long ago. Yesterday, or the day before. The days aren't counted here. But he was one of our oldest and wisest. He died long before the flood. He knew all the true names of things, and how to hunt beasts that no longer live in forests that no longer grow. And he held on down here for a long, long time. But slowly his spirit weakened, and now he is gone. We lose a few more of ourselves little by little as time goes on, uncounted. We are holding on as best we can. But I don't think we can hold on forever."

Were they city dwellers, nomads? I know some of them got a bad rep, but were they all like that or just some?

Most importantly, if we free them, are they just going to build a nice city for themselves and live along side the other races, or are we going to have Attilla the Scorpion rampaging across the world, killing all the humans?

You try to avoid taking a side. "I'm sorry I never got to know him. What happens after people fade?"
"Most people think they just cease to be. They stop struggling and become one with the underworld. I think they still exist, but they become so weak that we can't see or hear them. Maybe they can still see or hear us. Maybe Suusandar is proud that we're carrying on."

"Well, I'll do what I can. I want to help you as well as my friends back in Ligish. That means I have to make sure that Pazuzu doesn't come back and ruin things for everyone."

She nods a little. "If he really is close to coming back, that's a good thing to be concerned about. He's bad for everyone. Very bad. He's bigger than a city, they say, and he enjoys the misery of man, monster, and god alike. So prepare the way, little sister. But don't forget us. We won't forget you."

"What were we like, before the flood? How did we live? I'll remember, and I'll get others to do the same, maybe."

"We traveled the world. Past the mountains, around the cedar forest, even into the endless desert. We need no tools, and we can dig much more easily than humans can build. We need only something to hunt."

"Around? So it's not a good idea to go into the cedar forest, right?"

She laughs. "Not too deeply or for too long. That's what got the humans in trouble before the flood. Sometimes they'd go there for wood, sometimes to beg Enlil for favors, or sometimes just because they were told not to. The gods put all kinds of strange defenses there. But I have reason to believe that the way to the seven gates is near the northern border of the forest. So if you must go into it, go around and approach it from the other way."

"I'll remember that."

A scar-striped male scorpion overhears the two of you. "Lady Amata? Is the living one going to go on the journey at last? Is the new hunt coming?"

"It is coming, but it will come in its own time. Stay strong." She leads you away from the group of mourners.

"Well, uh, hey, here's an idea. When you come back, you could raise goats! Then you could stay in one place. Goats are really good."

She laughs. "Some of us tried that once. A boy with more brains than sense had an idea for an undercity, a city that went down instead of up. On the surface would be animal pastures, and we could go up and eat them whenever we pleased. The human cities didn't like that idea. They drove him and his people away with spells and great numbers. The humans paid for it in the end. They wanted us to hunt, it seemed, so we did it gladly."

> "I could make the humans share Ligish with you. It would work this time."

"Lady Amata, when do you think I'll shed my skin for the first time? I wanna be bigger!"

She pats you on the back. "You look to be in your third molting. Two more and you'll be a full adult. Some go through more. I went through seven! Give it a year, I'd say. Do you ask because you're worried your back won't heal? How'd you get hurt, anyway? Looks like you took quite a blow."

"I fell from a long way up. I was trying to catch a wasp-woman, so a giant threw me into the air."

The younger ones hear this and stop working. They look interested. You wave to them. "Hello. I'm Hunzuu. I'm the "living one" some of you have been talking about. You want to hear more about what's going on?" They nod and start asking you questions, mostly about what's good to eat up there.

>Tell them about goats!
That's a given. It shouldn't even need to be an option.

>Tell them about the more exotic things you've eaten.
Tell them about our various battles. Our first battle, the giant worm. It was tasty.
How we united the city. We didn't eat any of the humans, we're supposed to be the protector, it wasn't proper.
The great fight with the mole bitch. We would have been friends with her, but she hated us just because of what we are. So we TORE HER HEAD OF AND ATE HER! I hate that bitch.
Then the battle against Turtak. We fought some outriders with a lizard woman. She was a good fighter and we ate her.
We killed and ate a few lamasu then invaded the city through the sewers. We didn't eat much there, the place was gross.
We THREW CENTAURS! Then the last lamasu we a patronising dick. He called us a helpless little girl and tried to make us cry and give up. Ha, like we're that soft! So we tricked him and killed him with our poison, but he cursed us to fight the ghosts of everything I killed.
Then the giant blight demon. We got a few mouth fulls of that, it wasn't good to eat. The the wasp-woman that's a part of Pazuzu. She got away but it was a good fight. We flew threw the air like a Scorpion javelin.

Yay, Story Time.

You start by telling your epic tale about how you killed a lammasu and brought another down by throwing centaurs at it. This gets their interest and tells them that there is still a variety of tasty monsters in the world. Then you tell them about cooked goat, which they find boring, so you switch to telling them about the giant maggot and the mole-woman you ate. They like this.

When they appear satisfied by your descriptions of things you've eaten, you tell them about your fights that didn't result in eating anything, then about Mr. Clicks. You find out that some of your dead kin used to keep normal scorpions as pets as well. It's mostly done by women, Lady Amata says. Having pets that can ride on their backs while they're on the move supposedly reminds them of having their own baby scorplings on their backs, which triggers some kind of comforting instinct.

"Living one," one of the females asks, "It's better than being a human, isn't it? Is human food even any good?"

"Nothing tasted as good then as raw meat does now. It's one of the best parts of my new life. One things humans have that you might like, though, is spices. They make meat more interesting."
They tilt their heads. "How do they work?"
"Well, the humans collect... plants, I guess, and dry them and grind them up, and then put them on the meat. It makes the meat taste like all kinds of different things."
"Plants? I don't get it. I mean, I know they like plants, so they can just eat plain plants if they like them so much."
You get a little frustrated. "Some things just taste better when you mix them together, okay?"
They shrug. "Must be a human thing. But you're still glad to be one of us? Even though you still don't want to eat humans for some reason?"
"Yes. You don't have to eat everything, you know. Some things are better off not eaten."
"That must be another human thing," they joke.
"It's not a human thing! It's just a thing!"

"You've had an interesting life," one girl says. "I never got to do much. I went on a couple of hunts, but then there were some battles and mama said they were too dangerous, but then we all died anyway. It's hard to even remember, it seemed like so little. I don't have any good stories."

"Well, would you like to practice fighting? You're probably a lot better than I am, and I need all the help I can get."

"Sure! I think I've gotten to be all right. I even beat mama last time. Now she'll never tell me something is too dangerous!"

Your pain and cracked back plates still hinder your fighting ability, but you know you're i no real danger down here. Many of the scorpions in Ishtar's camp cease their prayers to Ishtar and gather around you. "Fight! Fight the Living One! Make her strong!"

Your first match, against the girl who was sad she had no stories, ends quickly. She simply charges and leaps at you with such force that your claws can't stop her, and after a few seconds of struggling on the ground, she has a claw firmly around your throat. It serves as a reminder that your claws, as useful as they may be, aren't the answer to everything.

An older male comes next, and you get the feeling that he's going easy on you. He telegraphs his claw strikes so you can swat them away and waits for you to do something interesting. You try crawling under him to catch him off guard, but he just drops onto you.

Things proceed in much the same way, with the pain in your back flaring up with every pinfall but your wound never getting more serious. You lose repeatedly, but never in the same way twice. And the scorpions still all respect you as their only hope. You think you see a little fear in their eyes sometimes, though. Fear that you'll fail. Fear that you'll be joining them in death soon.

Still, each one gives you a claw up after they defeat you, and you think you learn a few tricks you didn't know before. In particular you've learned how to effectively charge a someone who sees you coming and thinks they can counter you.

Afterward, they break off into brawling each other instead, and you and Lady Amata are alone again on the ridge. "Don't be discouraged," she says. "Think of the victories you've won. Keep that going. By all the gods, keep that going. I suppose you'll be waking up soon. Is there anything else we can do to help you save us?"

"Do you know the correct ritual for changing venoms?" You ask.

"I know of it, but I never tried it myself. It's not something that can be done or learned down here. Apparently dead blood is no good for spells. When we have time, I'll find you someone who can try to teach you."

You find that other scorpion-woman, the peacemaker, and get filled up with antivenom. The wasp venom has passed out of your system by now, so the antivenom isn't immediately neutralized, and you think you can carry it with you through your blood into the waking world. You're pretty sure you're about to wake up. You're usually not down here for much longer than this.

You give Lady Amata a tight clawhug. Something tells yo that she doesn't initiate clawhugs on her own, but that she still needs them every now and then. "I'll help you, I promise. And, when I said you weren't really my family... I dunno, I'm in a complicated time in my life right now, and... you're still important to me. I hope you understand."

She pats your head a little. "I think I do. I think we're similar, you and I. We've had friends, but family is something more elusive. Be good. Fight well. Don't forget us."

You are awakened by the sun peeking into a crack between your mattresses. The festival of Enlil has begun. This isn't the one you're supposed to sabotage, but it's not far away. This is the festival where you go inside and feast, but the streets must be kept quiet, in remembrance of when Enlil issued the command to flood the world, supposedly because humans were making too much noise. It reminds you of the forces you're dealing with in your quest to keep your adopted families safe.
