Today looks to be a pretty slow day for the 765 Professionals adventurers' guild, judging by the lack of activity around the guildhall. Everyone's here today, and for the most part they're all just relaxing and killing time. A few of the girls are out in the training yard, but rather than any sort of serious training it looks more like they're out there to watch Makoto and Makochii test their strength against each other. Except for Chihaya, who is apparently practicing her singing at the far end of the training yard. It's not an especially big yard, so her voice carries in through the window pretty clearly, its sweet tones complementing the relaxed mood pervading the guildhall. The thought crosses your mind that perhaps her singing might actually be in part responsible for the easygoing atmosphere -- she is a spellsinger, after all. But then again, you imagine she probably wouldn't be allowed to practice there if her songs were going to impact the rest of the guild.

But for adventurers, an easygoing day like this isn't at all unheard of. In fact, it's not uncommon for adventurers to go whole weeks between quests. Adventuring tends to pay well enough that you can get away with only sporadic work, and frankly it's tough enough that downtime is greatly needed to refresh and recover. You're certainly relishing the opportunity now.

But of course, just because there are no quests to be undertaken doesn't mean there's no work to be done. It just means that only a few people in the guild will be doing it.

Unfortunately, you now happen to be one of those people. Noticing you loitering about with nothing to do, Ritsuko calls you over to her desk.

"Looking for something to do, Producer? You know we still need detailed reports written up from your recent quests, right? You're not doing any adventuring anytime soon anyway, so let's get to it."

Ah, paperwork. That responsibility was shared on a rotating basis in your old guild, but here you're in a designated leadership role -- a so-called "Producer". Which means the administrative stuff falls to you. Fantastic.

Welp, may as well get it over with. No sense in letting the work pile up. At least you only need to do them for the two quests to the goblin tunnels. Findlay's quest, being personally funded and not reimbursed through the duke, isn't subject to such oversight.

You have a seat at the remaining desk and start working on writing up the reports. The desk is positioned against the back wall, right by one of the windows looking out into the training yard. This doesn't exactly help your focus. When you're not distracted by the (highly amusing) sparring between Makoto and her puchi counterpart, you find yourself being lulled into a daze by the soothing sound of Chihaya's singing. Ritsuko gives you periodic jabs with her elbow to keep you focused.

You're just about to finish the report for the first quest when suddenly Makoto comes flying through the open window, thrown headfirst by Makochii. She collides with you, sending you toppling backward in your chair, the two of you landing in a heap on the floor.

As you untangle yourself from Makoto and get your head to stop spinning from the impact, you see Ritsuko looking down at you in shock, asking if you're alright. Assuring her that you're fine, you pull yourself to your feet and help Makoto up as well. Then you see that your inkwell had gotten knocked over, spilling all over the pages of the report you'd just finished writing.

Makoto, clearly agitated, begins to apologize. "A-ah, Producer, I'm so sorry!"

>Your reaction?

"It's alright, I'm fine. But what about you? You're the one that got sent flying through a window, after all."

Makoto smiles, rubbing her head where it hit yours. "I'm ok, I've handled worse than that before. That Makochii sure is something, huh?" She actually seems kind of fired up about this.

"Heh, that she is. Anyway, let's see about getting this mess cleaned up."

You gather up the scattered papers and stationery and get a rag to wipe up the spilled ink. Looking over the ruined pages of your report, you muse out loud about whether there might be a way to use magic to clean the spilled ink off...

Ritsuko shoots you a dirty look. "I'm sure it could, Producer, but we're not going to make Iori go look up a new spell just so you don't have to redo your paperwork."

"Well it's not just for that!", you reply. "Being able to retrieve information from ruined documents could be really handy for adventuring!"

"Then we'll have Iori look into it when we end up with a quest where such a thing is needed," Ritsuko replies. "So for now, get writing."

Damned if I let Ritsuko enforce her twisted work ethic on me.
>>
>>30860656
"Why would it have to be Iori? Couldn't one of the other girls do it?"

"No way, not a chance," Ritsuko replies. "A really skilled water mage could maybe do it, but Azusa's strength is defense and healing, not precision stuff. You'd need someone with good enough eyes to see the pen marks and ridiculously fine control. And even then it would be a painstaking manual process, so you might as well just rewrite yourself. If you want that sort of thing done quickly with magic, that takes wizardry." She turns to you with a skeptical look. "I take it you didn't have too many mages in your old guild, huh?"

"We weren't exactly spoiled for options, no," you admit. "One wizard, a fire mage who did nothing but torch things, and a light mage healer. Nothing like here where you've got what looks like one of every kind of mage in existence."

"Well, I guess we are rather fortunate as far as that goes," Ritsuko says. "Anyway, elemental magic is pretty much something done directly by the mage herself. It's like an extension of our bodies, like an extra limb, kind of. And just like some people are strong and some are dextrous, there are differences in how an elemental mage is able to use her power."

"But it's different for wizards?"

>cont'd
>>
>>30861537
Ritsuko nods. "Wizards, as I understand it, are basically giving instructions that tell the elements what to do. They have to 'say' it in just the right way for it to work right, because...I dunno, the elements are stupid or take things super literally or something? But if you get it right, you can have all sorts of details and caveats that would just be overwhelming for an elemental mage to handle all at once. Plus wizards can mix different elements together, which opens up all sorts of options. Make sense?"

"What about Takane, then?"

"Well...um..." Ritsuko seems to be at a bit of a loss here, struggling for a few moments to come up with a response. "I don't know. Her magic's not like anything I've seen or even heard of before, and she hasn't really told us much about it. Just get to work, ok?" She turns to her own paperwork, but you get up and start heading over toward Takane.

"I think I'll go ask here then," you tell Ritsuko. Her only reply is a frustrated "mou!"

Having a seat next to Takane on the couches by the other window, you show her the ruined report and ask if there's anything her magic could do to fix it. She looks the papers over closely, then nods. "Yes, I believe this should be within my abilities."

She spreads the pages out on the low table between the couches and holds her hands over them, chanting:

"Wax and wane and wax again,
Moon's light once lost is new attained.
As moon once new is full restored,
Return thee now to prior form."

"Wow, excellent! Thanks so much, Takane!"

"Well, all right then." You decide to let the matter drop; you're pretty sure pressing for more information wouldn't get you anywhere.

As you're getting up to go back to your paperwork, a thought crosses your mind. "Say, Takane? Could you do me a favor?"

"I suppose that would depend on the details of the favor, but I will hear your request."

You explain about the rings and how you're having Iori look into modifiying them. "I was wondering, seeing as you seem to have a pretty sophisticated kind of magic, would you be able to keep an eye on that? Don't interfere, unless it looks like Iori's about to try something really catastrophic, but just...make sure she's not in over her head. The last thing I'd want is for her to get hurt because of something I asked her to do."

"Certainly, that should be no trouble at all. I will supervise her to the best of my ability -- covertly, of course."

"Thanks so much, Takane. That's a real load off my chest."

"Not at all, it is my wish as well not to see a friend come to harm."

You take your newly-restored report back to the desk and get started writing the second. By the time you finish, it's getting pretty late in the afternoon. If you head out now, you should have enough daylight left to go check out that farm you apparently got the deed to during your ignominous night on the town a couple days ago.

You decide you might as well go take a look. You're still not at all familiar with this area just yet, though, so you probably ought to take someone along to help you find the place.

Yayoi and the twins have already left, but it looks like everyone else is still around. Ritsuko and Kotori seem to still be handling paperwork, though.

Perversely enough, the first thought to cross your mind is to ask Azusa to guide you to the farm. Judging by how things went the last time you had her show you the way to get somewhere, you have a fair idea of how you can expect that to turn out.

And yet the idea seems oddly appealing to you for some reason. Granted, you are supposed to be taking a break from adventuring and stressful situations right now, but...well, it can't turn out that badly, can it?

You head over to where Azusa is chatting with Takane and Hibiki. "Hey, Azusa," you say, "There's this little farm outside the city that I want to take a look at. Think you could help me find my way there?"

"Sure! Just let me get my things!"

...It's still a break from adventuring as long as it's not a guild-sanctioned, monster-fighting, loot-grabbing quest, right?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a little earlier than usual, but this seems like a really good place to leave off, so we'll call that a wrap for tonight. I have some as-yet-unconfirmed family plans for sometime next weekend, but odds are favorable that I should be able to find time either Friday or Saturday night. I'll announce on Twitter once I know for sure.
