Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. Previously, you reached the city of Anthus, secured your stay in the Academy, and were thrust forcefully into the dilapidated ruins of a dead god's realm.

You step slowly into the room, sword held in front of you in what you vaguely recall is a ready position. To be honest you were never that great with swords, only ever passing. Glancing around the room, you quickly realize that the floor is actually a massive mosaic surrounding the central raised platform the sarcophagus sits on. It's difficult to get a solid grasp of what the mosaic might be depiction from your vantage point, unfortunately. Other than that the room is empty save for dust and debris.

You make your way towards the sarcophagus, up the stone steps towards the massive stone monument. As you reach the top of the steps something skitters away from you. You stop, and back away with your sword raised before you. After a few minutes of nothing but the sound of your own breathing you continue onwards to stand at the base of the sarcophagus. Carved deeply into the foot of the sarcophagus is the phrase “Died Ignobly, Killed by His Nature” in massive letters.

You know, the phrase 'his nature' is rather unorthodox. Usually it would be said 'his own nature'. Then again, this temple looks rather ancient. You suppose a language can change a lot in a few thousand years.

You step away from the sarcophagus, glancing over your shoulder to make sure nothing lurks behind you. Satisfied nothing is trying to sneak up on you from behind, you try and get a look over the top of the sarcophagus. An effort that proves entirely unnecessary, as the creature you search for has come to you.

Standing atop the massive stone construction is a single figure. At first, you think it looks vaguely humanoid. It has arms, legs, and a head. Six eyes, a long needle-like protrusion sticking out of its forehead, leading into a hose filled with what you can only assume is blood. Upon its back is a bulbous sack filled with the same murky red fluid. Involuntarily, you reach a hand to the puncture wound on your neck.

You leap to the side as the creature springs towards you, but you're not quite fast enough. It wraps its long, gangly arms around your legs with surprising strength. The creature's momentum carries you and it through the air, until you eventually land heavily on your shoulder at the bottom of the stairs. The creature makes a more graceful landing, its toes splaying out almost like fingers to support its weight.
>Received a Minor Wound

The creature darts off of you, skittering up to your side and trying to pin your arms down so it can get its disgusting forehead needle into position above your neck. It uses its feet to try and keep your legs immobile, but it seems fairly weak. You get the feeling this thing relies on speed to subdue its enemies.

You wrench your swordarm free of its grasp and thrust the blade at the creature's bulbous neck. Your aim is off, the sword instead imbedding itself deeply in the creature's shoulder, but its enough to get the thing to back off. It jerks itself away from you, freeing the blade from its shoulder, and skitters a few feet back.

The rusted blade is coated with a thick, black ichor which smokes and boils as it drips down the blade. Worrying, to say the least. If the blade corrodes completely you'll be left fighting this thing with your bare hands, and you don't want to think about what might happen if some of its blood touches you.
>Enemies: 1x Husk (Serious Wound)
>Enemy initiative!

As you quickly push yourself to your feet, you see the creature's throat bulge out further, and it crouches itself low. At first you think it's getting ready to jump at you again, but instead it shoots out a jet of whatever murky red fluid fills the bulbous sack on its back through the needle-like protrusion on its forehead. The air is filled with a coppery stench, almost like the air after a thunder storm, or the scent of dried blood.

You tuck into a roll and the viscous red fluid sails by. It impacts with a heavy smack against the side of the stairwell, starting to quickly boil away to nothing. Odd, you think. Blood doesn't usually do that. Come to think of it, the wound in your throat hasn't been bleeding much either. It doesn't even particularly hurt. Perhaps this creature drained something besides blood?

Springing up to your feet you find yourself in a much better position to attack the creature than you would've been otherwise. It's starting to tense up and bulge its throat again, but you think you have more than enough time to get in close and land a solid hit against the thing.

You quickly close the distance between you and the creature, swinging the sword upwards in a broad arc to try and sever the creatures' 'horn', if it can really be called that. Unfortunately the attack was broadcasted rather clearly and the creature nimbly dodged to the side. However, the attack was not a complete waste. You forced it to discharge its next shot in the process and the viscous red liquid sails completely wide, impacting the wall behind you and boiling away into the aether.
>Enemy Initiative.

The creature's legs tense and it springs forward, sailing across the distance between you and it. This thing really does resemble a frog on closer inspection, powerful legs and weedy arms. Unlike its last leap though it has its head lowered, as it if intends to impale you.

You duck and thrust the sword upwards as the creature sails by overhead. You feel the blade bury itself deeply in the creature's chest, but unfortunately the creature's momentum carries the blade out of your hands. It ends up hitting the wall head first, a loud crack resounding through the room before it lands in a limp heap on the floor.

Red energy starts to boil towards the ceiling from a rend in the creature's bulbous sack, mingling and mixing with the noxious fumes of its blood dissolving the flagstones and the iron blade of your sword. With great difficulty the creature rights itself, stumbling to the side as it tries to turn around to face you. Its head is twitching uncontrollably, and the long needle protrusion on its forehead is bent at an awkward angle. Still, your sword is imbedded inside its chest...

"Hello your highness, I managed to convince the magical intelligence of a fully functional ancient magitech facility that is actually sapient that I am its owner. I can read their language, I can give you access to a chair that instantly trains soldiers, etc etc. I know how to use all those things that are extremely lethal of misused. HURR, I KILL YOU AND TAKE IT! (note, he doesn't actually succeed)

>how in the world would the A.I. be able to scare off adventureres who don't bat an eye at losing several men to a generator and fleshbeast horrors?
By teleporting around being super magical intelligent construct, by showing them a couple of combat droids, by warning that the new owner can crank up the generator on them... It has a chance of failing, but likely not. They thought they were facing natural hazards not a powerful enemy. When they saw the wolf thing the barricaded instead of going in to clear them out.
>>
I am noticing a consensus towards waiting it out. If we do that, can we take cover behind the large sarcophagus thing?
>>
You step back, all the way up to the base of the stairs that lead up to the great stone sarcophagus. The creature tries to hobble its way after you, but can't quite manage. It collapses, the rend on its back growing wider. More and more energy is spilling out of the sack on its back, forcing the wound wider as it does so.

Eventually it reaches a unsustainable point and there is a flash, the whole chamber illuminated for one brief moment as vys floods into the room. It is with some relief that you realize you can sense the flow of energy around you, some small modicum of magic returning to you.
>Vys Pool: (0/[15])

That relief is washed away when you're damn near knocked off your feet. You're trip against the bottom of the steps and are forced to reach a hand back to catch yourself. You see half of your rusted out iron sword fly by, eventually clattering against the floor on the opposite side of the room. You're glad you weren't closer when it went off, or else that would've hurt a lot more than some minor bruising on your back.

You lie still for a moment, utterly exhausted. You're really ready to wake up from this dream, or whatever it is, at this point. You really, really hope it is in fact a dream. Still, how might one go about leaving this place?

>Look around for an exit, that creature had to get in somehow and the entrance you used was sealed when you showed up.

>The fuck it isn't. We froze one attacker, we could have frozen the rest. Fulca most likely could have helped us reprogram the trapped bots, but we didn't ask.
We froze one of them, a melee attacker and it had a fairly high DC, what make you think we could have frozen the dozen or so others?

>20+ adventureres breathing down our necks
>Could have just reactivated the reactor to block their path...
first of all we couldn't control the reactor from where we were and bypassing the adventureres would have been a problem, second of all the generator probably couldn't maintain a high output for an extended period of time without burning out. lastly they would have just searched for another way in eventaully, they aren't stupid they know that there's porbably more than one way.
>OR tell them we looted the place and give them some cash to go away.
you really think that would stop them?

"Hello your highness, I managed to convince the magical intelligence of a fully functional ancient magitech facility that is actually sapient that I am its owner. I can read their language, I can give you access to a chair that instantly trains soldiers, etc etc. I know how to use all those things that are extremely lethal of misused. I can teach your soldiers what they need to fully control it.
HURR, I KILL YOU AND TAKE IT! (note, he doesn't actually succeed)
the only thing there that is unique to us is it recognizing us as the commander, which isn't very useful once fulvia got unplugged. and what akes you think they don't have centurion armor and some smooth talking (non heretic elf) who can porbably convince fulvia out from under us.

Considering the sarcophagus staes "Died ignobly, Killed by his nature" could this mean either the gods powers killed him or something harnessing his powers killed him

It could also mean the gods ways and ideas is what got him killed condiering it says ignobly maybe it was a noble and or ggod god who was too noble for his own good and got killed

You start looking around for some sort of exit, after all that thing had to get in somehow. Before anything else, you throw the double doors leading towards the hallway as wide open as they can go to let more light in, then you start a slow walk around the edge of the room. The walls are stark and bare, nothing but smooth stone. The ceiling is a flat expanse of stone as well. You almost feel like you're in a granary silo.

Taking a closer look at the sarcophagus, it is carved with intricate geometric patterns. Mostly straight jagged lines with no real rhyme or reason to why they're carved in any one position. On a magical level, you feel that whatever is inside the sarcophagus exudes an incredible amount of power, bleeding it into the air around it. It's not just raw vys either, but rather distinctly earth magic.

The only irregularity you can find in the entire room is on the floor. The mosaic, you realize, seems to be a body in profile. The sarcophagus rest in its center, roughly where you recall the statue that granted you entrance to this room placed the bowl after you put the beads inside. In the region that roughly corresponds with the 'head' there is a gap in the center. Just barely wide enough for you to fit your hand. Of course, shoving limbs into strange holes inside an ancient ruin doesn't always end well.

>No risk, no reward. See what's inside the hole.

>Check the entrance, maybe you can puzzle out a way to get out.

Wrong
We pressed the "down" button until it was completely off and even the lights went out. The field shrunk from 80' to practically nothing.
Then we pressed the up button once to turn the lights back on, field went back out to ... IIRC it was 15' and stayed there. We could have turned it all the way back to the power level it was on when before we turned it off.

Well, those wall carvings we saw depicted a third god battling the sun god, who used earth magic to trap the sun. Plus, the statue had the sun trapped in its hand.

If this is the tomb of the earth god, then that would mean we've found Fire, Water, and Earth. Who's to say there aren't a Nature and Metal god as well?

No, but if you have any ideas that might work for earth magic you can certainly suggest them and I'll tell you if they'd work.

There were all the service constructs that nobody damaged, there were dozens of war constructs... although we went and smashed most of them instead of freezing them

Guys come on the ruin is past us can we please focus on surving this place?
>>
Why on earth do some people want to open the sarcophagus?
-OP told us that the mask was used by cultists to sacrifice some of their vys in order to revive their dead god
-the mask is black with what appears to be burnt out holes for eyes
-The story told in the hallway here was about how the ice god and earth god brought down and entombed a fire god in an earthen tomb
-the thing that we fought had a needle that clearly was meant to suck stuff out of people, considering it gave off vys when we killed it, we can assume it sucked vys out of people
-The sarcophagus gave off a powerful feeling of earth magic
Now, can I get any guesses on what's in it?
>>
>>30858053
why would they believe it? and for that matter why wouldn't they use deductive reasoning and ask themselves why it didn't do it all the time, or why it didn't reveal itself sooner.

Face it, those adventureres were not going to give up. Even if they were somehow kept out of that entrance someone would have searched the surrounding area for another entrance because it is obviously a large facility due to the size of the generator.
>>
You stare at the hole for a moment, imagining all the terrible things that might await you. You might get your hand chopped off, or a snake might bite it, or spiders. Gods, you hate spiders. Still, this seems to be your only chance of getting out of this place so you wrap your hand in the sleeve of your vatis robes and crouch down. Hesitantly, you start pushing your fist through the rectangular opening, feeling around for any sort or irregularity.

Eventually, you feel an opening in the side of the hole and carefully feel about inside. There is a raised panel that you could probably press down on, but pressing strange buttons with your arm currently elbow-deep inside what might be a stone trap is generally a bad idea. Still, it might just open a stairwell out of here, and at least nothing's bit you yet.

You take a deep breath, close your eyes, and press the button. There's a grinding news, and for a moment you think you've doomed yourself to a slow death bleeding out with a crushed arm in some ancient being's tomb. After a few moments of something besides excruciating pain you open your eyes again, confused.

The wall in front of you has slid away to reveal a stairwell upwards. It is lit by braziers filled with smoldering coal spaced evenly apart. The stairs are fairly wide, two men could easily walk shoulder to shoulder without needing to fear knocking over one of the braziers. You jerk your hand quickly out of the hole and stand up, eager to get out of this damnable room already.

You start up the steps, taking a moment to regard the carvings on the wall. They seem to be a continuation of the previous wall carvings you saw in the entrance. Surya is leashed by a collar of what you think is earth, the horned figure bowing low to what you think is Pani and offering her a chain. The next image is that of another figure you don't recognize. Feminine, you think, though it's hard to tell. It has its arms crossed before it, and then it withdraws a long, curved dagger. It creeps up behind the horned figure, now alone, and drives the dagger into its back. The figure collapses, and the woman finishes the figure off by slitting his throat.

As you reach the top of the stairs, the braziers are extinguished. The only spot of illumination in the room seems to shine upon a hideous, warped figure of a young girl. She wears baggy, torn clothes and her face shifts and bubbles, as if uncertain of how to arrange itself. Two smoldering holes take the place of its 'eyes', and a hole sits where its nose should be. Its thin, cracked lips are sown together, sealing its mouth shut.

Soma has said that people who have Grandmastered ALL of the elements are a thing. Hell Saidk is a Grandmaster in atleast one.

But lemme check the archives just incase outright stated it.
>>
Anyone else want to try and be the first air vatis after we master all the other elements first?
>>
>>30858412
Yes it is an insult, and over the course of 1-12 hours it would take to get it back alot could change.
>>
>>30858884

He said they are a thing, but I also recall him saying there wasn't currently anyone alive who was a grandmaster in all of them. Could be remembering that wrong.

Regardless, that doesn't mean the warlord's one of these people.
>>
>>30858836
its not that uncommon. those that do are often warlords. he is a warlord. There are exceptions such the merchant guy and the archmage of the university.

>>30858840
We should, gaining lower levels is easier than higher levels, and gaining more magic = more vys, which we constantly run out of.
>>
>>30858903
doesn't exist.
>>
>>30858925
He did not say that at all. He said that they are a thing that we could run across in the world.
>>
>>30858904
So what if it changes? we were safe at that moment and having vys means our survival chance massively increases. If it changes to the worse... well we are better equipped to deal with it.

The thing doesn't move, instead standing at the opposite end of this corridor staring at you. You think you hear it whisper something, the faint sound carrying across the distance as the world starts to shift, twist, and fracture at the seams. One word in particular seems to stick in the back of your head as you begin to fade out of consciousness.

"Watching."

When you're next aware of you're surroundings, you're laying against something hard. You think it's the floor. You try to shift around, get your hands under you and push yourself up, but you can't move your arms. They're bound behind you're back, probably tied. You hear Profectus' voice saying. "Look! He's starting to wake up!" Followed by the sensation of something sharp pressing against your neck, breaking the skin just slightly. You snap your eyes open, and find that you're still in the artificer's workshop, granted not in the same place. Your face is being pressed into the stone floor, and somebody is holding a knife to your throat.

"Move, foul demon, and I will end your life." Okay, that's definitely Chryssa's voice. Profectus speaks up shortly afterwards. "Oh come on! You don't need to leap straight to 'move and I kill you', woman! He might be fine!"

>Tell them to stop fucking around and get this damn mask off your face, why didn't they take it off immediately?
>Tell them you're fine, you weren't possessed by a demon or anything!
>Tell them to release their new lord immediately, for the puny mortals know not whom they hold hostage!

You stay as still as you possibly can and start trying to explain. “Wait, no I'm fine! Really! Freaky dreams and unpleasantness aside, I'm not possessed by a dem-” Chryssa presses the knife in a little harder. “That's exactly what a demon would say! I will not fall for you foul tricks!” Fortunately it isn't long after that you feel the knife moved away from your neck and hear Profectus speaking again. “If he said he's fine, he's fine. I mean, wouldn't a demon come out all 'bow down puny mortals!' or something?” To which Chryssa would respond. “That's exactly what they want you to think, a real demon would try to act normal!”

Still, you feel her weight shift off of your back, and her hand stop pressing you into the stone floor. Your arms are freed soon after when she cuts your bindings. With a relieved sigh you roll over onto your back and reach up to pull this damnable mask off your face. It comes off without much trouble, and you throw it as far away as you can in your rather weakened state.
>Vys Pool: (0/21)

“Why didn't you pull the mask off sooner, damn it?! What was that not the first thing you did?!” You berate them, while pushing yourself into a sitting position. Profectus scratches the back of his head awkwardly and shrugs. “Well, it wouldn't come off. We tried, yeah, but it was stuck on pretty solidly.” Chryssa elects to just glare at you.

>>30859169
it is POSSIBLE. After all, the cultists are bad, the imprisoned being might be their enemy...
Or maybe the area we were in is a demiplane made by other folk and the mask lets the cultists attempt to breach it to empower their god for it to escape.
We didn't know for sure, but honestly it wasn't worth the risk.

there is an overwhelming majority to tell them we are fine (10 v 1). There is only the slightest argument between those 10 (a 6 v 4 split) on whether to be polite or asshole about it.
Asking to remove the mask afterwards doesn't change the request of the polite tone rather then asshole tone.
So no point in a recount.

You can stay awake for a weak, barring circumstances, without much of a problem. Maybe some tiredness, irritability, but nothing much else.

After a week you start hallucinating. Mostly minor things, but mechanically it'd be represented as a -1 to most rolls. Then a -2 after nine days, -3 after twelve days. So on and so forth.

You try to stand up, but can't. Even trying to push yourself up using the wall to help you, you can't stand up. You end up uselessly pressing your arms against the floor until you eventually give up. Eventually Profectus takes pity on you and reaches down to help you up to your feet. You can't support your own weight though, so he's forced to help you hobble about. “Wait! Wait, 'fore you take me back to the room. I wanna talk to that artificer.”

Profectus sighs. “Listen, you can tell the guy to go sodomize himself some other time Mikhael. You can't even walk, you need to get some rest.” You shake your head as vigorously as you can manage. “Nah, nah! I never finished trading with the guy, and I'll be damned if I get away from this with nothing to show for it!” The both of them look at you like you're insane. “Well... the artificer left. You've been laying on his floor for the past eight hours, he said something about he'd be watching the three of us and then wandered off.”

“What do you mean he just wandered off?” Profectus shrugs. “He left through the front door, wandered off.”

Although to be fair, water mages are the ones least likely to go insane and the ones who can go the longest without sleep. So, is it the healing power of water magic that is reducing insanity... or is it the lack of sleep that is reducing insanity?

Being a Water mage doesn't have much to do with it.

The 7 day thing is a psychological thing and being a Water mage won't affect that. The only thing a being a Water mage affects is being able to cool fatigue. You start to try and push yourself out of Profectus' arms. “Nah, that's not how this is gonna work. I'm not just...” You yawn, losing track of what exactly you were trying to say. Well, maybe coming by tomorrow wouldn't be so bad after all. “Not just gonna... shut my eyes for a bit.” You close your eyes, and slump forward limply. Profectus fortunately manages to catch you before you hit the floor.

You wake up slowly, enjoying the warmth and comfort of a feather mattress and silken sheets. This suite really is quite luxurious, the Academy must be doing well for itself. It isn't until the smell of food cooking in the kitchen that you pull yourself out of bed.
>Vys Pool: (21/21)

Someone pulled off your boots and your vatis robes, it seems. You quickly get dressed for the day before pulling aside the curtain that separates your room from the kitchen. You see Profectus standing there, drinking wine from a cup this time and attending to a metal pan filled with long strips of fatty meat. You're not really familiar with this particular meal, but whatever it is it smells delicious.

I wasn't here yesterday, I started the first argument by complaining about the stupidity in prior threads, I wasn't the only one on my "side". either...
I did not "bitch about every decision" made today though, in fact I voted with the majority on each decision in today's thread and stayed out of the second and third big arguments since I had enough of them for one day.
So your hypothesis is wrong. Not all anons are the same person either
>>
“Isn't it a little early to be drinking, Prof?” He shrugs. “Yeah, sorta. I mean it's noon. Not that early. You want some fatback?” You stare at the strips of meat. “Who thought fatback was an appetizing name? Yeah, sure. I'll try some.” You take a seat at the kitchen table to wait.

“Where's Chryssa?” Profectus shrugs. “She said she was going to the library to try and teach herself magic.” That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. It isn't long after that when Profectus slaps a plate down in front of you, heaped with grassy slices of 'fatback'. Seriously, horrible name for something that proves to be delicious.

What do you intend to do first today? Your spear should be ready by now, and Chryssa's armor should be ready tomorrow.

>>
>>30860439
I thought we are teaching her vys basics first. We don't actually KNOW earth magic meditating techniques because we got ours from a machine that didn't come with meditative techniques.
>>
>>30860550
Of course we have o teach her the Basics first, and that should take her a decent amount of time. During that time we can read our books/research some earth techniques.
>>
>>30860550
I belive Som stated that we can just do general meditation on the element also burrying ourselves in dirt while meditation could add a 2-4 bonus
see

>>

Thinking of earth meditation techniques is hard.

How much would creating a miniature super detailed version of the city (or the academy, or some sort of landscape) get us?

>>30860750
I've seen it, but we need things that you can do over a period of time while feeling the Vys flow around us.
>>
>>30860727
That doesn't really seem meditative at all. Think of how meditation's gone so far. It involves your body, generally involving it with the element you're meditating on.
Covering our body in ashes, or sticking feet in a fire.
Slicing open our arms.
Creating the city in dirt/rock isn't really along the same lines.

Right now if we do decide on branching out instead of stemboating towards grandmaster water we should get a basic grasp of what we can dowe earth and from there build some meditation rituals

>>
>>30860776
Soma confirmed that creating a detailed Mansion out of Water around us and then freezing it and keeping it fomr melting our several hours would net us a 10+ bonus.

Yes, this please, if that thing can talk Fulva will be super convenient.to have in finding Central Command. Also, we should offer the Archmagos are ability ro teach Ancient Rhynian
>>
Anyway, here's a list of meditations on earth that I'm thinking could probably help.

Find a patch of earth. Strip down and lie on it whilst meditating, making sure as much of you as possible is in contact with it.

Doing that with Chryssa might be a little weird for her though. Regardless this is a pretty basic thing to do.

Second, slather your body in mud. A step up.

The body burial is the next logical step up here.

As far as extreme meditation techniques go, something like getting heavy rocks placed on top of you would probably be it. There's a risk of crushed and broken bones, but that's the extreme way of doing things.
>>
>>30860776
Actually creating an ice sculpurte is a meditation technique dont remember the exact specifics but that rock city should also apply
>>
>>30860837
Full size mansion in case that wasn't clear.

I was just trying to scale it down since we're not experienced with it.
>>
>>30860837
Yes but that requires active involvement, earth is pretty static, once you've made the shape, you've made it.
>>
>>30860829
The nicest thing about branching out is accelerated learning
>Instantly create a maze with earth to move a water drop through for master level water meditation
>Heal self from any potential injury suffered from fire meditation
>Never waste time looking for kindling again with fire magic
>Never waste time looking for our friends with nature magic
all the magics have extremely useful features that empower us to be more efficient in our daily lives. (in lower levels).
>>
>>30860889
I guess you could make something out of dry sand.
>>
>>30860873
Body burial will net a +2, mud might get like +1 but the first one probalby won't.

Just using Earth magic whilst meditating should get modifiers.
>>
>>30860889
make it a giant mud mansion than, i like the swimming in sand idea though.
>>
>Go make sure Chryssa hasn't killed anyone first.
Writin'

A lot of these ideas for earth meditation are great, by the by. They're really helping me fluff out my notes.
>>
>>30860889
Which is why i would think it would get us a smaller modifier like +4.

Creating that kind of minidetail is not easy.
>>
If we do that our Water should give us a bonus to that roll.
>>
>>30860907
Seems like you would be manipulating the water more than the earth.
>>
>>30860936

And swimming though the Earth like it's Water should net quite the bonus, but it's probabliy Master level.
>>
How would one meditate on Metal?
>>
>>30860955
we know you can use a mastered element to boost the speed of learning of a complementary element by making a meditation that mixes the two...
I wonder if you can do it for non complementary elements (eg, earth master swims through earth like it was water, uses earth to kickstart his water magic)
>>
>>30860982
Go swimming in molten metal.
>>
>>30860921
We could always try to find some medium sized or so boulders and compressed them into smaller sizezs or shapes

other than nature , ithink a black smith would have to be close to master with all other elements.
>>
>>30861059
There are no offensive Metal spells.

But maybe Fire + Earth + Metal would create a spew of molten Magma? or would it need Water too?
>>
>>30861020
Elemnts can be mixed to create new ones Fire+Water = Steam or boiling Water
Water+Earth = Nature possible mud
Earth + Fire = Magma?
To me the only limitations seem to be Vys and our creativity

We could try to melt a sword or something with fire magic and then use metal to shape and reform it. Like how water and nature work together.
>>

I agree. The only thing stopping us is our creativity.

But it will be hard, Whatshisface hadn't completed a steam spell by the time he had written the book.

Maybe if we started a simple heat spell in one hand and a spew of water from the other and slowly brought them together?
>>
>>30861138
That's not how Metal works. Metal is purely reinforcement spells. Earth might work there though. then a Metal enchantment at the end to sharpen it since i feel Earth would create a stable blade.

the OP is using the 5 elements of asian mystics instead of the 4 elements of greco-roman mystics.
He outright said so, and even if he didn't you can tell by their names.
The 5 elements in eastern magic (and ours) are wood, water, fire, metal, earth.

Poison and paralysis are not elements, but specific spells. And as such they do not have ranks like the elements do. (there is no grandmaster paralysis)

You finish up your meal pretty quickly, wiping your hands off on a small cloth towel once you're done. “That was actually... really good. Where'd you learn to cook?” He grins, and waves it off. “It isn't exactly hard, just let it sit in a pan until it's crispy. Fatback was part of our breakfast rations.” You push yourself away from the table and work a little of the stiffness out of your shoulders. “Well, I need to go make sure Chryssa hasn't killed anyone, and probably try to convince her I'm really not possessed by a demon. I'll say you later, yeah?” He nods. “Yeah, I think I might go explore the town a bit, maybe find a bar or something. If you don't hear from me by midnight assume I passed out in an alley somewhere.”

You grab your compact sword and slip it into your sleeve, sling your courier's bag over your shoulder, slip on your signet ring and stuff your pistol into the silk sash that keeps your robes closed. Probably a little heavily armed for a trip to the library, but you can't be too careful. Especially not with some mysterious, possibly god-like being maybe watching you.

The trip to the library is a short one, a few of the students you pass by give you odd looks, and you hear some whispering behind your back. Seems tales of your exploits have spread, though probably not in a positive light. Then again, “that crazy adventurer” isn't all that bad a reputation to have. Better than being slanderous scum unfit to lick the boot of a slave. You find the library to be fairly empty, as it was the last time you entered, although you do see Chryssa learning over the front desk holding a book in one hand and pointing to it with the other, whisper-shouting at the librarian.

How do you want to approach this?

Well, you don't really want to just let her work out her frustrations on that poor librarian. That might just end up making her more frustrated. As you approach you catch some of what she's saying to the librarian. “This book says 'Beginner's Guide to the Elements'! Beginner's guide! Why does it not go over any of the basics? It just tells me to medi-!” You decide then is as good a time as any to cut in.

“I'm sorry, Miss. You'll have to excuse my apprentice, she's only just starting out.” You place a hand on Chryssa's shoulder and she looks at you a little crossly, though she does stop berating the woman at least. The librarian just nods in response, apparently still a little shocked by just how vehemently she was getting told that this is a crappy library and she's a crappy person for working here. You opt to gently lead Chryssa away from the front desk to one of the sheltered little alcoves where you can speak with her in piece.

After you've let go of her shoulder, Chryssa folds her arms in front of her chest and plops down in one of the chairs, reminding you distinctly of a spoiled child in many ways. “It's inappropriate for a man to touch a woman without permission, you know! Even if it's just on the shoulder!” You roll your eyes. “I'm so terribly sorry, I'm sure your spoiled for marriage now.” Withering under the glare she delivers in response you opt for something a little more sincere. “Look, I apologize for leaping headfirst into that 'trying on the evil mask' thing. If you want though, I can make up for the lesson I missed.”

Wasn't the furnace gloves dropped because they wouldn't fit over our centurion armor? Why are these gloves any different?
>>
>>30861892
you are misreading the chart. the chart says water destroys fire, fire destroys wood.
Red narrow arrows are for destroying, big fat arrows are for reinforcing. Water empowers wood, wood empowers fire
water destroys fire
wood destroys earth
fire empowers earth
>>
>>30861920
Don't bash on the utility of those gloves.
>>
She grumbles something under her breath, but after a moment she spits out “Fine, I will allow you to teach me. Start with the basics!” You raise your hands in mock surrender. “Of course, I'll get you started and then settle in to read my books. That way if you have trouble I'll be right there to help you. Keep in mind though, learning magic isn't quick. I studied for thirteen years to reach the level I'm at today.” She nods her head brusquely. “I am well aware of the commitment needed.”

After that you recall the speech your master gave you when he started your training. You go into what vys is, and how it dwells within all living things. That living things generate excess vys and so it tends to pervade places where a lot of people dwell or pass through. The first thing she needs to work on is being able to feel the energy she already has as a living being, and once she's aware of her own vys you'll teach her more about collecting it from the surroundings and channeling it into actions.

You wrap up your little lecture and then go into actually teaching her the proper positions one can use for meditating and the mindset one must have to enter a meditative trance. Conveniently the Academy has a few pillows laying around each of the alcoves and it isn't long before you have her sitting cross legged and straight backed, from then on it's really on her and whether or not she can calm herself enough to slip into a trance.

You settle in for the long haul and start digging through your bag for a book to read while you wait.

this book is one of a kind, unique book. We can't risk it being destroyed in our adventures, and we didn't finish reading it yet.
See if we can sell it to the library with the caveat of being allowed to read it at no charge in the future. Also, read it last because we need to power through books we can actually return for refund.

read those 2 first, because a scroll can be read very fast and mastered in half a day. If we a are lucky we can master both scrolls today, get +4 to our vys pool, and return all 3 scrolls for a refund today....

Alternatively, we might make copies of the scrolls and then return the original. (that way we can use the scroll to teach our apprentice)

Almost forgot about this, yes you could use the image recorder to snap a picture of each page of each book. You'd need to figure out how to use it, or have Prof teach you, and you'd also need to commit a lot of time to flipping through each book. Still, it's something you could do.

>what causes the insaness in the magic we use. types,,, ect.
Do you mean to ask why do Samja go insane? Nobody is quite sure. It's just happened for as long as anyone can remember, even to non-Vatis.

Some priest theorize that the older a Samja gets, the closer they become to gods. However, their mortal frames can't contain the knowledge of a god, and so they lose it completely.

Most Vatis theorize that it's an effect of their higher than average affinity to magic. That elves and humans just don't typically live long enough to see it set in with their own race.

Symmetry. Every elementals empowers one element and destroys one element, that way it is neat and symetrical.
Having decided ahead of time that this is how it must be, they then came up with excuses to justiy it.

In this case though, fire can bake clay into a ceramic. mud into bricks. etc. Making the earth "stronger".

You pull the journal out of your bag, getting comfortable in your chair and flipping it to the front cover. There's no title, simple “Grandmaster Rostam” in big curly letters across the front page. The first 'chapter' if you can really call it that is a recipe for some sort of folded-egg construction, with meat and cheese and vegetables trapped between the two halves of the egg. It actually sounds rather delicious. After that he launches into a bit of tirade about rounding up all the humans and putting them to a quick death. He refers to them as inept animals a few times before going on and on for four or five pages about how much he loves dogs.

The shit you put up with.

As you read further you do finally manage to glean some sort of information from the book. He starts ranting about his daily life, and he spends a few paragraphs talking about meditating. He says that his assistants were being particularly difficult today about getting their throats cut. He goes off on a brief rant about how he was going to heal them anyway, its not like they'd die. Nobody seems to trust a grandmaster's skills anymore.

The entire book is peppered with little tidbits like that. This crazy old man seemed to have an army of apprentices that he used for just about everything, or maybe just so he could torment them. He shot streams of fire from his hands, and manipulated the flame just enough that it wouldn't burn them. He made teams of apprentices toss boulders back and forth across a net with him as some sort of twisted 'sport'. Sure, your master was kind of a dick sometimes. He had some annoying habits, but this is on a whole 'nother level.

>>
>>30862594
"Assistant required. Qualifications needed: have a throat and some balls you sissy."
>>
You do glean that he was a real believer in what he terms 'group meditation'. Apparently he believed meditating with others on the same element was more effective because it forced you to take into account what the others were doing. It also introduced an element of competitiveness. He would force his students to meditate on water by trying to dump a bucket's worth of water on the other's head. He would have students train fire by working together to heat a furnace. While in its own way an ingenious breakthrough, you can't help but be a little disgusted he basically used them for his own amusement and convenience. Really, he was a horrible person.

After that its a few dozen pages of worthless gibberish before the next valuable tidbit. Though you have started to make a note of some of these recipes. Really, the guy seems to be quite the prodigious cook. You borrowed a piece of paper, an inkwell, and a pen from the front desk so you could start writing them down.

That aside, Grandmaster Rostam starts going on about the research he'd done into combining elements. Those few pages actually prove to be incredibly useful. He talks about how it wasn't so much about slamming the elements together and seeing what happens, it was actually about rationing how much of an element you used and the ratios of one element to another. In particular he talks about combining just a little bit of water magic with fire magic to create a stream of liquid fire that stuck to his assistant's skin and clothes until he had the other assistants put him out. Then he talks about using earth magic with nature magic to sense tremors through the ground, allowing him to trip his apprentice at just the right time so she'd fall down the stairs.

After that it's another rant about how those filthy humans are debasing Samjan society, with their inane morality. You're interrupted before you can reach the end of that particular rant by Chryssa gently clearing her throat. It had been a few hours by this point, so you assume she's either given up or figured it out.
>Grandmaster's Journal: 2/3rds Finished

“I think I've got sensing vys down, but I can't... stop sensing it. It's an uncomfortable, nagging sort of feeling. Like I'm hungry and full at the same time.” You carefully set your book down on the table and turn to face her. “That's not unusual for someone just starting out. Sleep typically replenishes one's reserves to full, but for the untrained it's not something the body really focuses on. My master was of the opinion imbalances in vys and low reserves were the cause of most of the diseases of the mind.” Personally you're not sure you buy that, but hey it's what he told you starting out.

You launch into a brief lecture about how to sense vys in the surroundings, that it's about externalizing that focus she used to figure out her own reserves. She seems to be having trouble conceptualizing the idea you're trying to get across though., and really it's not an easy concept to grasp. You weeks puzzling over how to sense vys in the air around you.

>>

She isn't even close to meditating on an element.
>>
You rub your chin for a moment, trying to think of how you want to go about this. “Alright, here. Let me try this.” You collect just a little vys in your palm and send it towards her in the form of a gentle pulse. It sweeps her shawl back and blows her hair around a bit, but otherwise her expression remains rather neutral. “That was just about as basic as a spell can get. I just pushed vys at you, and the force of it rushing by was enough to affect you.”

You form a little ball of fire in your hand and absentmindedly toss it back and forth. “In a lot of ways, the world is like a really big container. Vys is like the wind. You can't usually see the wind, and a lot of the time you can't feel it either, but you always know it's there. You can breathe in the air, you can feel the breeze. That's how you need to think of vys, and absorbing vys is really just taking one big breathe of fresh air.”

She seems to think about it for a minute, before nodding her head. “I think I understand what you're trying to say.” You let the ball of fire dissipate into smoke. “Good, I'll try to cast a few really simple spells just to stir up the surrounding vys. That should make it a little easier to feel the currents in the room.” She nods again, and closes her eyes to go back to meditating.

After that you return to your book, you've almost finished it and you want to try and get it done quickly so you can sell it back and get most of your money back with it. In fact, if you sell back the Grandmaster's Journal, you might even be able to afford those Puppet Master's Gloves!

The last section of the book really seems to delve into metamagic and some of the rarer effects he'd learned. He talks at length about the Time metamagic effect. Stop Time, Slow Time, Speed Time, he also talks about his attempts to combine it with the elements. Apparently it's an extremely draining spell to maintain. The amount of his vys reserves he had to expend increased exponentially the longer he tried to maintain it, regardless of what he was trying to do with it exactly. His attempts to combine it with the elements were disastrous, usually causing him to pass out or leaving him a burned out husk for the rest of the day. One particularly useful spell, he found, was Mark Time. He cast it once at the start of each hour, and ever since then he's always had the exact time.

He also talks about his experiences with Vys metamagic. Apparently there aren't very many effects that actually work with this metamagic, but the ones that do always make very powerful spells. He could apparently cast Manipulate Vys to force his apprentices to do as he liked, even going so far as to orchestrate an entire song and dance just to work on his control. According to him it wasn't as costly as the Time metamagic, but it was rather difficult to maintain. If he lost his focus for even a moment, the entire spell unraveled itself.

But slowing down time im sure we could ldo our thing much faster compared to others.

You set the book aside and stretch, cracking your neck studying the fireball you've been absentmindedly spinning over your fingertip. You know, it might actually be interesting to try and recreate that diagram of the 'solar system' as Profectus had termed it. You could create balls of fire of varying sizes and try to make them all orbit one another. You're snapped out of your reverie by the librarian snapping a piece of wood against her desk. She's giving you a dirty look...

Oh, right. Fire in a room full of invaluable books. No wonder she's annoyed. Ah well, not like you actually set anything on fire. You drop the spell before she decides to come over here and make an issue out of it, then you reach into your bag to start selecting your next book. However, you're interrupted by the sound of Chryssa quietly clearing her throat. She's actually smiling for once. A triumphant little smirk.

“I did it!” She states excitedly. “Not only that, I was able to fill my reserves to what I think is full, but how do I increase how much vys I can store? How do I cast spells? Does this make me a Vatis now?” Huh, she actually seems rather excited. The only other time you saw her this giddy was when she got that ominously named Elaudian Death Mask.

You start to go through her questions in order. “To increase your reserves, it's imperative you practice, meditate, and read tomes about magic. Casting spells is about twisting vys into an element or an effect and channeling it into something else. Finally, no. You're not a Vatis yet, you need to become more competent before you can officially wear the robes of a Vatis.” You take a glance out the window. It's starting to get late now, the sun is setting and the afternoon has passed into evening. You realize you skipped lunch.

let me be more specific. the book spoke of him using the spell andhis reserves increasing (That is what i got out of it) so why not do some low level spells to increase our reserves with it or something, just dont kill us when we do it.

I would like to propose something. since we cant really find a spell that copies down the contents of one book to another blank copy, why dont we hire scribes to make copies of our spell books so we have our own personal copy and sell the other back, or in general. Actually folks, shit. It's late. I think I'll do one more post, let you pick what book to read, and then we can pick up the next session with the complete info dump from that book.

>>30864011
>>30864061
You didn't learn any spells from the book, just what some really high level spells do and a few ways to make reaching that high level easier. Also, recipes, genocide, and the art of being a complete asshole to one's underlings.
>>
>>30864066
I meant spend a few days depleting it. we empty our pool of energy? so when it fills back up we have more. That is how you train. yo empty it, fill it, repeat. you spend time exercising it.
>>
>>30864090
I've noticed all the namefags in this quest can't into spelling or grammar. Does namefagging just attract stupid people or something?
>>
>>30864090
I don't hate namefags, it just that almost every namefag ive seen is retarded and thus, i hate them.
>>
>>30863981
We can possibly copy books but we need to get Profectus to teach us how to use an image recorder we found
Which I really suggest we do now
>>
>>30864127
That isn't how it works, dear god you're fucking stupid.

Have you even read the past threads?
>>
>>30864127
You're worse than sargeras.

>>30863968
BEGIN THE TEACHING

We should totally have her sleep partially submerged in the earth tonight (only nose exposed for breathing), as a meditation aid.
>>
>>30864090
>>30864119
honestly i would like you having a name so i know if the same person is insulting me. I use it so its easier for people to reference someone. Like hey so and so had a good idea ect.

>>30864124
so it just told us about tricks to help us along, thought it was teaching us something else for a sec.

ok
>>
>>30864127
No. that isn't how you train.
>>
>>30864180
>"Why are you burying me!? What is going on?!"

>>
>>30864124
thanks for clearing that up.
>Meta magic Instructions: Leaping
&
>Metamagic Instructions: Blast
if we're going to copy them might as well learn these two. They are tomes so learning them both adds to our vys and they are both just meta magic so they should be relatively short.

But that doesn't change the fact that you're a shit person, and now every single shit action you do is all attribued to you.

Try reading the other threads.
>>
>>30864214
* scrolls
tomes w.e the topic being very specific should lead these two to being quick to read about.
>>
>>30864214
We don't need to copy them if we just learn them instead.

We can teach Chryssa ourself.
>>
>>30864151
what i just said is basically what the op said about practicing, i just suggested it so it isn't stupid i just proposed we actually spend some days working our spells instead of just reading.

>>30864194
u care to suggest any other methods on how to do it, that was the only one that came to mind.
>>
>>30864251
We should only take pictures of the rarer book to save time.
>>
I'm surprised we aren't teaching her like we were taugh since logic would say that we would teach in a similar way to our master.
>>30864196
So this could be true.
>>
>>30864228
stfu, being anon making shity choices and you can just claim they are not.
If you have a problem with the story or something you read. Thats something YOU have a problem with. You are not being forced to stay here. Go away.
>>
>>30864228
ive read the other threads what have i done to be classified as a shit person? all i did was propose we copy and sell the books and we spend time actually practicing our spells.
>>
Should we read the metamagic pamphlets and copy the huge book or read the book and copy the pamphlets? I don't think we'll have time to read both in just 2 days plus we need to pick up the spear and armor tomorrow too.
>>
You close your book and put it away in your bag. “Well, I suppose we have enough time that I can start on one more lesson before I need to go haul Prof out of a gutter somewhere.” Chryssa looks at you confused for a moment. “Why would Profectus be in a gutter? That's not sanitary...” You grin. “Well, generally after consuming copious amounts of liquor, what is and is not sanitary ceases to be of any great importance. Anyway, lets get started on channeling vys into actions.”

You start explaining that vys can be used for just about anything, it really is quite versatile. You can make yourself stronger, smarter, faster, more agile, more charismatic. Without even knowing a single spell or understanding any of the elements in the slightest. This part tends to take some getting used to, because really it's like learning a lot of really basic spells and you can only do so much before your reserves are depleted. To get started though she needs to just work on moving her reserves around her body. It tends to settle in the chest area by default, though everyone is different, so she should try channeling energy into her limbs, into her head, so on and so forth.

Even though she's been a quick study so far, getting this down to the point that she can start casting spells will take at least a week, maybe more, by your estimation.

While she gets up to stretch her legs and maybe see about securing food for the two of you before starting her next session of meditation, you go digging through your courier's bag to see about what book you'd like to read next. Your stock has noticeably shrunk in the last few days, it feels good to have knocked the Grandmaster's Journal out so quickly.

you don't even understand how we gain more Vys, That is why you're a hit person. The taking pictures of the book idea isn't he shit one, it's everything else. Event though taking the pictures will probably end up being pointless because we can just teach it ourself.

>>30864276
We gain Vys by reading a new tome, leraning a new effect, learning a new Metamagic, and gaining levels in an element.

That has nothing to do with dropping to near zero and then replenishing.

>>30864373
>>Ritual Book of Surya (3/16 Chapters Read)

>>30864346
I propose we read the book first next time. we could try to read them to but cut down on our sleep if need be
>>
>>30864293
Your master was over a hundred years old before he even took you on as an apprentice. Typically when a Vatis takes on their first apprentice they're much more coherent and understanding, but they also don't know nearly as much as they will later on in life. Thus it's an important decision; apprentice to a young dude and avoid torment, or apprentice to an old dude and learn more.

Let's get these out of the way too, if I remember correctly the 5 effects book was the cheapest and somewhat common.

I thought we are only 2/3rd finished with this... or did we read while performing simple magic.

>>30864399
the copy idea was so we could make some money sealing grandmaster books or basic ones to people.
>>
>>30864504
yeah, thats what baffled me the most especially since they would be the most expensive item around and only save vys for when we try to manipulate something.
>>
Oh, and anyway. I'll start the next thread off with
>Metamagic Instructions: Leaping
>Metamagic Instructions: Blast
Next thread will probably be on Monday, but I've recently developed social obligations throughout the week so keep an eye on my twitter.

I'll archive this thread and stick around for Q&A until thread death.
>>
>>30864428
It's also the longest
>>
>>30864484
>These on the other hand are all about utility. Basically, they give the user the effects of a constant manipulate spell, at the cost of a little vys for whatever it is they're tryin' to do. Grab something far away? Easy. Slap people in public without revealing yourself? No problem. Stop the vile poison spreading through your body? Can do.

They sound useful as hell.

ask to be shown to a suitable training room, then learn the two scrolls.

also, you are currently in library, return the finished books
>>
>>30864533
not really they are the manipulate metamagic, but with out costing us 1 or 2vys.
We can do all that if we find the scroll in the library.

sorry meant selling.

Photos are not copies, we would have to write copies out from the photos.
it will take a while to make copies, and selling them in this area is going to be a bad idea, what with the academy.
You might be able to sell them elsewhere... but if we travel far and wide we might be able to do so. its just not something we should prioritize right now

Also, remember that the prices are extremely high due to them having a monopoly. You can't get such prices easily far from here.

>>30864577
