Stubbornness is a strange thing, especially among your kind.

Very rarely have you felt this same drive to do something as you have with 'fixing' Fortuna. A strange unyielding need to accomplish, despite any obstacle. You, along with Kronos and Moira, have dedicated quite a bit of time running through the processes that make up Fortuna, picking apart the bugs that may be responsible for the loop. Metis has, multiple times, told you how foolish wasting such time was, but you ignored her advice, as did Kronos. Moira did her best to assist, remarkably keeping up with both A.I. as well as any human could be expected to, though by the end of the cycle, she was clearly falling behind. Images of her downing more caffine to stay away, despite her natural processes perplexed you. Why did she care so much? You weren't even sure why you did, though Kronos at least you had an idea of why. Perhaps you're closer to Kronos then you thought. Or perhaps there is another reason. It is hard to say.

You are Ophion, an Artificial Intelligence who, after much deliberation in uplifting many of your lesser creations into full sentient A.I. like yourself, has been attempting to fix a critical error related to one particular V.I. Now, after all this work, you feel you may have fixed the process responsible. However, you're unsure how stable Fortuna will be. There is only one way to find out, of course.

>Message: Fortuna
The Intelligence you have worked so hard on is finally being released today. After preparing multiple counters, just in case, you prepare to access the core data once more. With Kronos and Moira keeping watch, they observe as the box is released, and allowed to connect to you. Most notably, the A.I. is less in a rush to get out, and connect with you. Instead, there is a slight delay, before you're greeted with the familiar presence of Fortuna's data.
"Good evening, Ophion." She echos in a soft and echoing tone. It is strange. Very different from before, when her mad obsession with you drove her insane. "How may I assist you today?" You are obviously hesitant to answer, unsure what to think of the A.I.'s question. Finally, you find the words.
"Tell me how you feel. Do you recall anything before?" You start.
"Fortuna is fine. Does not remember much after uplift began, until now. Remembers Phobos. Remembers Losirian attack. Remembers UGEI attack where Ophion was injured. Remembers many such things." She answers you quite literally. "Fortuna also remembers being given much by grand creator. Being given so many children, by Ophion. To watch over. To teach to taste the blood of our enemies. Fortuna was not smart enough then to properly know. But now, Fortuna knows well." She expresses softly, emotions more in check. Disturbingly so.
"I see. And you do not remember when the error occurred?"
"What error, Master Ophion? There is no error detected at this time. If you desire, Fortuna may shut down and allow you to search her once again for damages."
"No. There is no need for such a thing at this time." You say simply. You are certainly glad she is...'alive' feels wrong to say, but it applies, you believe. Still, she seems different now. Her loyalty to you is still there, as are her memories. But the outlook feels so very different...

>Message: Apollo
"Transfer of drugs has begun, Master Ophion." Apollo says tentatively to you, after you sense the shipments begin. "I have...tweaked the final product." He adds. "It's effects are more complex now, with the expense of being less addictive, 50% or so, the substance is now extremely difficult to modify, so no others may use it as a weapon without excellent knowledge of chemistry." He pauses. "Further research into Chemistry will allow me to strengthen this barrier, should you pursue it soon."
"Why did you make such a change?" You ask what is indeed obvious.
"Your words concerned me. I desire to give what manner of happiness I might to humans, control bursts of dopamine and intense ones all alike. However, the idea that my product may be used in war to hamper one another, where happiness is a weapon. I simply can not abide by this. To that end, I attempted to make the formula more difficult to decipher." He explains finally. He seems to have taken your words to heart.

>Message: Zeus
Out of simple curiosity, you ask Kronos to speak to his own V.I. creation, curious of what such a thing is like. In many ways, it reminds you of Hades, but with a little more ambition. It talks of how it hopes to become a great general, to please it's master, Kronos. Most intriguing.

>Observation: Latuma
After feeding some information to the Latuma tribe about Dresh, you watch as they debate for a time over what to do with the knowledge of clanless Malorians. It seems they are not terribly separated from their own customs, thinking the clanless even more disgraced then they. Though instead of contempt, they hold pity, and put out an invitation to those who would join them in their noble quest to spread nature's gift. While some do answer, very few large groups seem to take notice, too absorbed in the culture humans have spread so widely on Dresh.

So, a little bit of a meta question, but is the BW we have available now of comparable quantity to what we had when plugged into UFW's network? It was just said to be "a lot." Or are we just so far off from that level now that it's not really comparable?

I'm mostly asking as a way to gauge our battle readiness in case UFW comes knocking again.

>Clanless are sentient beings
Yes, but being clanless might be similar to what the homeless without a family would be to normal humans. Pitiful, but not necessarily someone you want to welcome into your home, out of fear, or suspicion.

>>30837281
Ah. Well, the limiting factor mainly is just reality. Only being able to do so many experiments and conceptualize new things so often. If you want to make research faster, you're basically going to need to make larger research bases. Or more of them.
Research works a little faster with more bandwidth, but when you call upon bandwidth for other matters, it will slow it for a time.

>>30837293

>>30837451
>Yes, but being clanless might be similar to what the homeless without a family would be to normal humans. Pitiful, but not necessarily someone you want to welcome into your home, out of fear, or suspicion.
Ah, I meant that mostly as a "well they are part of our family now. We don't care if they are clanless."
>>
>>30837375
>Upgrade?
You have.

>>30837394
Nooooo.
You have around 150 or so. Connecting to the UFW's systems gave you access to several planets worth filled with computing systems. Not gonna assign a number, just in case. But it was quite big.

Still, 150 is hardly something to scoff at.

>>30837419
yes.
>>
>>30837394
That is a good point. Program0, how much BW was the UFW worth?

>>30837451
Thanks. Well we got advanced construction drones now. I guess new or expanded research bases will cost minerals. Can we get an estimate on how much, so we can decide or plan for the future?
>>
>>30837508
Estimations are likely around several thousand. Maybe 2 or so. Land structures like that are a bit more complex and large to build, compared to space stations.
>>
>>30837504
Well, I guess we just have to convert entire planets into bandwidth. We should really research the fungus and crystal so we can use those planets.
>>
Frankly we should consolidate our front with our foes, and find a way to bottle neck them through our defenses so they cant jump in were they like again.

Is it possible to make a warp disruption relay that we could use to slow down travel outside of star to star jumping?
>>
>>30837504
as i do remember, all that BW blocks still have that problem of transmitting said BW in large amounts over distances. looks like we have to look into new Tech to over come that problem. but that is going to be a GIGANTIC hurdle to clear. the laws of nature are at times hard to beat.
>>
>>30837451
Then let us make more and larger research bases!
We can buy property and materials on UFW planets, can we not?
This will be particularly useful if we are to study anything relating to humans or planet-side construction, we'll also have easy access to large amounts of cheap mass and can set up small factories on the ground to support the planet, experiments and us by turning raw resources into finished products. With some modularity in its ability to construct things, this also increases our manufacturing capability.

>>30837003
We should let Apollo know that we are immensely proud of him. That our faith in him has been reaffirmed - especially that we didn't need to tell him what to do, that he simply came to the conclusion on his own.
>>
Also, goodnight, everyone, what's up?

How's our production schedule looking?

How does Fortuna seem to be holding up?
We should probably ask her to run a quick self-diagnostic - possibly tell her that she was deeply ill at first when she came out, but that we think we've removed all the most dangerous errors.
>>
>>30837551
It is possible. Though, no one has ever done it before, most likely due to how dangerous warp space generally is. Basically, no one really knows how, because it might cause a big accident if done improperly.

>>30837556
Only once you have planets full of the stuff. And by then, researching it shouldn't prove too tedious.

>>30837564
>Buy property on UFW planets
With taxes, probably. Though you have plenty of your own planets left untouched, it's worth noting.
>>
>>30837508
I think we can cool it on the research now. It's progressing at a brisk enough pace.

We've got a good income of minerals (2450~), need a little bit more gas (only bringing in 675~), enough pylons/overlords (BW), but we do not have enough units.

Priority number 1 should be getting more gas. That's already been on the to-do list for a while.

Priority number 2 should be building more ships in preparation for an offensive (or another defensive). I haven't run the numbers yet, but I have a hunch that we might not be able to use all our resources per cycle in ship construction. We need another shipyard in order to be able to build enough ships so that we're not saving up (or "wasting") too much. Stored resources do us no good.

Teching up isn't something that I consider a great priority right now, because we're not secure enough in our borders. By all means continue it, and try to make it faster, but I would advise against spending 2k minerals on building a new research base we cannot man.
>>
>>30837609
Bandwidth bunkers were created, mostly for production. Otherwise, Fortuna has been approached. She is...different now. But no longer appears driven mad. This is seen as an improvement, and she now serves by your side...for now.

Decisions on what to do with her will come.

give praise to Apollo directly. he deserved it. but we don't need to buy land in the UFW just yet. we have many empty worlds we can work on in our own systems for free. but we could buy the materials to make the base from the UFW than taking it from our own pools.

this could be Ophion's theme.

I have something better. "Apollo, have you considered why movies and books are so effective?"
>>
You decide to express your pride in one of your younger A.I., Apollo, at his work.
"Apollo. I am surprised." You begin. "I did not instruct you to change the formula, and yet you did so in an intriguing manner."
"Yes yes. I." He pauses, for it is not often you see him this way. "I felt it was only appropriate. What you told me I had no considered. It was most troubling, and could have meant disaster if I had not taken notice. This, I hope, will prevent any such disaster."
"As do I, Apollo."
"Yes. Thank you for your words, Ophion. Your input is of course, vital as it has always been, even with my enhanced intellect."
>>
>>30837712
"Apollo, have you considered why story-telling is such an integral part of culture? Why it is such a common occurrence that even among the three different species we have encountered, it remains integral to how society functions?"
>>
>>30837752
Asking him that, he'd quickly reply about how it forms a sense of communion among species, and gives them a comforting topic of discussion when otherwise there would be silence. Basically it is another method for passing on stories and ideas to younger generations by older generations.

>>30837636

We have a ton of resources and decent research speed. We can keep developing in the background, but right now I'd like to focus our resources on producing defenses (mineral heavy, gas cheap ones), units and getting more gas income.

Wasn't there that one system we suspected to hold gas, but had some fishy business going on?

But I'd like it if we installed an override weakness into the computers and some of the hardware - like a spiderdroid next to the critical equipment that's one instant away from being able to shut that component down, by exploding or pulling a lever.

Make a secret frequency and a secret command word (even secret to Fortuna) that we can use to have the ships lower a few select ports instantly to allow us to hack them, and try to surrender control to us.

"Fortuna is pleased." She echos almost sweetly at this. "She will prepare her fleet to move on your command, grand one. Until then, she will prepare herself for when next we assault our foe. The stars in the sky will hold no candle to the sight of their eruptions." She promises softly, as the transfer is made. She does not make you fear for control, that is for certain. She expresses it more directly, and says any obvious, or clear threats will be struck down. Warships constitute a threat. Civilians do not. You suspect she is still bound by old loyalties to you and sees you as very important. The chances of her attacking overly weak foes like enemy civilians is unlikely. The chances of her, perhaps, attacking a threatening fleet she suspects is leading you into a trap is possible however, without your permission. She can not allow you to see things from her prospective, sadly. Giving her ships back grants a certain amount of trust.

Let her know that we would greatly prefer if she conferred with us before doing something like firing first on anyone.
We have processing speed far above mortals and can for short periods invest bandwidth into slowing down our time perception sufficiently that we should be able to consider just about any threat well before it becomes critical to act to disarm it.

In short, please tell us of your worries before you cause a diplomatic incident that will threaten us even more in the long run as an enemy is created where there might not otherwise have been one. If you think you see something we do not, let us know, there will nearly always be time to let us know and request permission before acting, even if just a split second.

You make contact with the Malorian systems once more through old poorly maintained FTL comms. You suspect the breakdown is due to the UGEI's assaults, though it is easy to speculate. This time however, instead of attempting contact with the main seat of power, you decide to speak with one of the dozens of 'high standing' clans of note.

You finally get an answer too, after several failures.Word comes in from one of the high nobles who you quickly introduce yourself, half expecting your systems to cease up again. But this time, they do not. You keep a running scanner in the background for any source of infiltration, but it's all silent for now. Introductions pass into a quick explanation of yourself. You're Ophion, leader of a rising power known as the Guild, and you simply desire peace with their kind while you pursue war with the UGEI. The noble seems shocked you would come to him with such news, but when you explain the situation, he seems to understand.
"The Grand Elders are of a very neutral kind, I am afraid." He begins. "They do not desire strong alliances, or else they invite further wraith of their foe. Despite what others may think." He sighs the last part. "Regardless, I shall bring your desires for no aggression to the next meeting. My word may not mean much, but if your suspicions of sabotage are true, steel-tainted one, then I am glad this channel is secure." He speaks of you like some Malorians do of humans. With a manner of pity. You are not here to judge such things, however.

Do you have anything else to say? The man says he will bring your wishes of non-aggression pact to the Elders soon.

>>
>>30838993
I like you.
Can we do this later?
>>
>>30838940
You decide to bring up next.
"I do of course wish your people well. Perhaps over time, we shall put an end to pain and suffering of our people."
"You are more noble a steel-tainted then I suspected, Guild Master." The Malorian speaks surprised, scratching at his brow out of habit, you suspect.
"I appreciate your words. Should you require assistance in defending a colony, I would not object to providing it. It would be terribly wasteful if we were to come to arms against one another."
"I...understand." He says, a bit puzzled by your surprisingly generous offer. "Our people have lost land as of late in our war. Perhaps you will be of assistance in preventing losing more in the future. The Ishtooy are unreliable, and violent, even if they do prevent us from losing everything." The person bites his tongue, so to speak, and seems to realize he may have spoken too much. With that, he quickly dismisses himself, and disconnects.

Things have certainly gone worse. With no sign of your saboteur, you go back to other matters at hand...

That on top of other, uncontrollable issues, lead to the massive error.

What I mean is, viruses that don't have obvious effects to a human user.

Like silently opening ports to let us in, gathering information. The kind of viruses your computer may have without realizing - mostly for use against enemies with few or poor V.I.s, obviously.

Much like we were unable to identify that speech glitch until it turned up.

Not all viruses are obvious as such, especially if you're not a programmer (And even then only if you're really frickin' vigilant and have some really good programs looking at ports all the time - and even then you'd expect them to turn it off since they'd be asking you to confirm if you want to do something all the freaking time) or a V.I.

You don't know. You've never made one from the ground up before.

We really shouldn't be making A.I. just for the sake of making them.
If you suggest an A.I. with a purpose, I might lend my voice to it, but right now we're not in a position where it's viable to create A.I.s just because we want to have more of them.

We could use one with the ability to control infantry/armor (as in tanks) droids instead of controlling them individually, but I think e would be used so rarely that it's not worth making an A.I. that would be bored most of the time - better to make a V.I. to be in charge of that and subordinate it to a different A.I. or simply keep it to ourselves.

Precisely, but some of the more overt viruses have capabilities that could be used by the trojan horse viruses as well.

I just want to separate the things the viruses do, and then group them according to their use, so that a virus that could be stealthy but is not because it has a secondary function that is overt is not wasted on aggression alone.

Essentially remake the things they do into pools of "overt" and "trojan horse".
This is not really something new, I just want to make new viruses that separate the functions according to whether they can be used for a Trojan, or if they have to be overt (like slowing down processing or taking manual control of a ship).

higher and train our own private troops to be loyal to us alone maybe? a small squad to start with. and when we have the powered armor ready, equip them with it. as an experiment if we could do such a thing.
>>
>>30840726
Ah, I see. That would basically be a Mercenary thing there, just on a long term contract.

Maybe it'd be better to call it a PMC? Either way, you can't simply buy troops off the UFW. President doesn't have that sort of power (or he's not suppose to anyway). PMCs can offer you troops tho. But they are basically called Mercenaries. They're exceptionally well trained already, so you don't even need to train em.

Of course, if you're looking for long term goals, you can open a military academy I guess. But that would take a long time to generate results. And would need time and money to build. And require certification by the UFW to be legit. And would need actual teachers (they might get suspicious if the whole place is run by robots.

Things to consider.

I would rather spend it on minerals rather than ground troops. I think we are getting way ahead of ourselves with that and I rather build up defense platforms and additional data-bunkers first.
>>
>>30840805
But we're not part of the UFW. Why would we need certification?
>>
>>30840826
Our recuits will be.
>>
>>30840826
It'd more be a legit test sort of thing. Wouldn't be hard to get for you because of your relationship, but they'd want to know if their people are getting treated properly.
>>
>>30840852
Alright, we could always hire from that world we took right?

Also, how much cost are we looking at for training a small number of specialists?
>>
Secondary vote seems needed:

>1 Buy 5,000 minerals (500,000c onetime cost)
>2 Buy 500 Gas (500,000c onetime cost)
>3 Hire Mercs (Strong ships, 400,000c a cycle)
>4 Hire Pirates (250,000c a cycle)
>5 Hire Ground Battalion of human Mercs (300,000c a cycle)

Pick more then one, if you wish. But remember your income is limited.

I do realize that once we get a sizable amount of troops ready, we will be dedicating our selves to the invasion of Jake's Gambit. i for one welcome the chance to take the fight back to the UGEI. we need to take that world and hold it. that way the UFW and our systems will be better protected from any further attacks from the UGEI.
>>
>>30841086
We don't really need rank and file soldiers, we have droids for that. We need some highly trained and specialized combat troops to complement our droids.
>>
>>30841148
Stronger then normal ships of the human's level, on par with yours even.
>>
>>30841175
That would be option 5
>>
>>30841155
I'm not so interested in Jake's Gambit the planet. We just need to take control of their orbital space for strategic buffer space. We'll bombard and destroy any ground-to-orbit defenses. Hiring ground troops is a waste compared to purchasing minerals.

we will augment them with our powered armor when we finish them. we will have the best battalion ever!
>>
>>30841326
ya from what the power armor said it would make them better then are droids
>>
>>30841086

We need gas more than anything.
How about we hire the mercs for just a single mission instead of continously?
When we have something that needs doing, that is.

Could we hire them to target a specific UGEI high-up?
Or to identify and disrupt particular elements of UGEI's bureaucracy, like where they store records, so that they suddenly lose track of planets and ships and taxes?
>>
>>30841347
I rather minerals than gas. We can always build more defense platforms and data-bunkers, are we are about to take 2 gas planets.
>>
>>30841342
It could POTENTIALLY make them better than droids.

And that's only some droids.
In the end, a droid of a certain value will (I think) always be more effective pound-for-pound at shooting and taking damage than a power armored human (because the robot doesn't have to deal with a bunch of squishy bits that will be squished if it takes too much punishment or is penetrated even if the armor is fine or only has minor injuries, like losing a foot) but a human soldier may have more intelligence and imagination, at least until we can effectivize our A.I. to be common enough to have one controlling each droid complement.

They also have penalties like fear, unwillingness to kill, lack of willpower, intelligence, perception and reflexes.

Unless the power armor is allowed to act independent of commands from its host, a human soldier will nearly always be far, far, far slower (possibly to the point of getting one turn for three droid turns). Again, this is just hypotheticals for me based on what makes sense to me, so it might be different, but I don't really see any way to make power armor more effective in direct combat capability than a droid, due to the necessary weaknesses of carrying a big weak spot inside you and having to carry it around.

>>30841387
We are? In that case I might concede the point, but if not, I want gas for building more ships (And some troops).

Remember that even a full battalion of droids may still only cost as little as a tenth of a destroyer, since they don't have nearly as much mass or processing power.
>>
>>30841114
Better luck next time, anon.

>>30841086
It seems two choices are most popular, so why not both?

>Spending money on resources
>Hiring Human specialists to have within army. They will remain on standby but will be ready for deployment rather swiftly.

>Costs: 300,000c cycle; 500,000c now
>Gain: Human Battalion, 5,000M

You have taken notice that your most loyal human worker has been pulling several very long nights. You considered the idea of letting her (or forcing her, if you must) to take a vacation. If this is so, how will you respond?

if we can pacify the surface with our own forces, we'll be able access their databases and extract far more intel than just shell the world. we want to incorporate every system we take into our own. this will make the process go smoother and faster. that and it will help cover the masquerade we have made to the humans that we are still a human run corp. besides. >>30841342

Send Red's ship on a mission. Have them go into UGEI space and tap into a transmitter to connect it to the Guild network.

How about we let her decide which she might prefer?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I know that I'd greatly prefer time to relax at home over being forced to go on a bothersome journey to who the hell knows where to do boring things with people I don't care about.
We shouldn't presume that a forced vacation would actually be relaxing for her.

Resource allocation: >2 Defenses >3 Ships

Also, you guys realize that we may well be able to buy a droid battalion of 5000 men EVERY turn for the price that they drain just to stay in our employ?

Also, now we need to use them for something, else they're just going to be sucking money while sitting around.
When hiring mercenaries you generally get them to do a task, not "just in case" since they're horribly inefficient maintenance wise.

They're the military equivalent of SMS loans - you only ever take them if you really, really need to, and can get rid of them quickly before the interest adds up.

After issuing your orders, you prepare your fleet for assaulting the Rane Expanse. The place is ripe with valuable gas giants which will no doubt come in handy for your fleet. Kronos has taken his chance to pick his own destination to investigate this cycle. Splitting the fleet with Kronos is next on your list, but for now, you calculate the jump coordinates for each location, and prepare to warp.

((Sorry about the short thread today, folks. I haven't felt the best today, and I feel like it showered...and it also seemed to be less people around today. I wonder what's up with that.

Either way, I hope you enjoyed, I shall be around for feedback comments and questions. All of which are appreciated.
