You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Celestino's put into action a plan to root out the traitorous guards, and you've finally got some actual downtime for the first time since this morning.

...or rather, you -will- have some downtime once you head down to tell Citrine that it's safe for her and Marius to leave their room.

>Congratulations, you are once again an unruly WOLF!
>Wolves are cool and powerful... and also rather dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while wolves are really cool, they still don't count as people.

>"Aw crap..." you mutter under your breath. "...I'll be back soon, I need to go and tell my sister and her husband that the castle's safe again. Mostly safe, anyways."

"Do any of you feel like coming along?" you ask as you get up from the couch. "I don't plan on being too long, but..."
"As nice as it would be to walk with you," Luciana replies, "I've been on my feet all day so I think I'll pass," she sighs.
"I'm on guard duty until Rana switches with me, so I guess I'll be staying behind too," Reya says.

With a shrug, you make your way for the door... but then you hear Marianne calling out to you.

"I suppose I'll tag along," Marianne says as she walks out of her bedroom and approaches you. "It would make for a decent change of pace from the day's... unpleasantness."
"So it's just us, then?" you reply. "Alright, let's get going..."
"I suppose that's our cue to leave," Luciana says with a sigh. "We're only guests in this suite, after all."
"Hm?" Marianne turns to the other Princess. "I don't mind if you wanted to stay in here until we get back, you don't have to leave.
"Are you sure? I mean..."
"I don't mind, and we should be back before too long," Marianne replies.
"Yeah," you say, nodding. "-We're- the guests here, after all..."

With a relieved smile, Luciana plops back down onto the couch.

"Take care, then," the red-haired princess says, waving to the two of you. "And Reya and I will do our best to keep from rifling through your belongings while you're out."
"Please don't pin my sister's bad habits on me, Princess..." Reya says with an exasperated sigh.

Following Marianne's lead, you decide to ignore Luciana's joke and head straight for the door. With a final wave goodbye, you open the door...

"Umm... hi," Elena says, holding her bunny up so that it's eyelevel with you.
"Sorry to bug you guys like this," Andreas says as he pulls her back so that you can get through the doorway, "but she's still pretty shaken up after everything that's happened and we figured that you guys would be in here..."
"Are you goin' somewhere? Can I come too?"

Stepping aside, both you and Marianne can't help ut smile as you watch Elena scurry into the room and sit right next to her big sister. Despite their occasional bickering, it's still quite obvious that they love each other quite a bit.

"Thanks for not kicking her out, I know she can be a pain at times," Andreas says, nodding to the two of you as he follows her into the room.

Walking out into the hallway, you make sure that the door is closed firmly behind you. Even though the castle -should- be safe right now, it's still best to err on the side of caution.

"You mentioned before that your sister missed all of... -that- because she was feeling sick?" Marianne asks, walking alongside you.
"Yeah, I guess the pregnancy's really messing with her," you reply. "But this time, I guess it was actually for the best..."

You can't help but laugh a little at the idea of telling your future niece or nephew about how they indirectly saved their parents by making Citrine throw up uncontrollably.

Hoping for HEALING.

Anyway, Arch. If I get it right, if Marianne and Emilio miraculously hit it off and marry and the country is reunited, Celestino will abdicate for their child once he's of age, while Thierri will probably have already done it once Marianne is capable. Great! But what happens tothe Crown Prince Alberto? And what about the line of succession?

>If I get it right, if Marianne and Emilio miraculously hit it off and marry and the country is reunited, Celestino will abdicate for their child once he's of age, while Thierri will probably have already done it once Marianne is capable. Great!
That's Celestino's plan, yeah.

>>30826067
>But what happens tothe Crown Prince Alberto?
He goes back to being the Regular Prince Alberto.
Not that he'd particularly mind, he has zero actual desire to rule and would much rather spend his time hanging around Thierri or testing new spell alterations for Giancarlo.

You can't help but notice that Marianne seems a lot more melancholy than usual... not that she was ever particularly lively to begin with. Still though, it probably wouldn't hurt to try and talk to her...

"So..." you clear your throat. "...how are you holding up?"
"Hm?" Marianne turns to you.
"Are you, uh... alright now, after what happened with those assassins? I get that you might be kind of shaken up after that."
"Oh, that's what you meant," she sighs. "I get sick just thinking about it, so I've tried to push it to the back of my mind for now... to be honest, part of me would like to just curl up into a ball and cry for the rest of the day but I know that won't resolve anything."

"Umm, are you sure you don't want me to take you to wherever your father is?" you ask. "If you're feeling that bad about everything..."
"No, that won't be necessary," Marianne shakes her head. "He's busy speaking with Sir Gregory and King Celestino about the current situation, anyways. That's more important than my 'fragile emotional state,'" she says with a wistful smile.

Yeah, she definitely needs a hug... but now isn't the place for that.

"I dunno how much help it'd be," you say, patting her on the shoulder, "but I'm here if you need someone to talk to about what happened."
"Yes, I know you are," she sighs. "and for once I suppose your overly upbeat personality is an advantage..." she mutters under her breath.
"And if you wanted to talk to someone who could uh, relate with you more," you say, ignoring that comment, "I think Sylvie's reacting to this in the same way as you."
"And she has... -other things- bothering her as well," Marianne cuts you a sharp glance. "But thank you for the concern, I do appreciate it."

>>
>>30826565

She wouldn't dare say anything if Citrine were to hug her.
>>
>>30826477

"Anything else on your mind?" you ask, trying to change the subject a bit.
"Aside from the fact that I killed someone, you mean?" Marianne sighs. "I'm wondering about what Father is going to do, mostly."
"What, you think he's going to call his other knights here?"
"I doubt that he'll go that far," she shakes her head, "but it wouldn't surprise me if he summons a few of them to the castle for further orders," she sighs. "Sir Vincent and Sir Gregory definitely won't be straying too far from our castle until this situation cools down, but the others will most likely be ordered to head to the borders just in case... it all depends on who's actually behind these attacks," she sighs.

Marianne then starts a long lecture on the reasons why Granache is safer than Marconetti despite having a smaller standing army (mostly related to Sir Vincent), the flaws in the selection process for the Royal Guard here in Marconetti and how this incident has completely proven her father correct in the way he does things, the criteria for Knight selection in each country, and many other things that honestly go right over your head... but having someone close to her age to talk about these things seems to be cheering her up somehow so you do your best to pay attention to what she's talking about even if you may not really understand it at all.

And before you know it, you've made it all the way across the castle to Citrine's room. Or rather the door to her room. Marianne seems a bit disappointed to stop talking (come to think of it, has she ever talked to you for that long before?), but she goes back to her usual quiet self as you knock on the door.

Citrine is going to sense Mary's mood and once she finds out what happened at the party. Citrine is going to hug her. Marianne is going to lose her last bit of self restraint and she'll start crying uncontrollably in Citrine's arms. Citrine tells her everyone has has to do things that there not proud of but everything will be OK.

And, Reinhold will just stand there in the corner awkwardly.
>>
>>30826834

>>
>>30826851
We all do. I also expect Citrine to lose the baby if this excitement keeps up.
>>
>>30826814
There's a convoluted vetting process in order to make it into Granache's Royal Guard. While Thierri isn't as overtly paranoid as Celestino is, he's a lot more particular as to who he allows to roam the castle.

Royal bodyguard positions generally draw from the Royal Guard itself, but Reinhold was a nobody from the army so Thierri felt it necessary to have Arnaud do a thorough background and character fitness check (as much as is possible, anyays) in order to ensure he was on the up and up.

"Umm... who is it?" you hear Marius call out from the other side of the door. Looks like he definitely listened to your warnings.
"It's Reinhold and Princess Marianne!" you shout back.

The door quickly opens, revealing a rather panicked-looking Marius.

"It's nice to see you," Marius says, laughing nervously. "Come on in, hurry... sorry if I seem a bit rude, Princess," he turns to Marianne, "but after what Reinhold told us..."

After shooing the two of you into the room, Marius closes the door tightly behind him.

"Marius, did you let someone in?" Citrine calls out from inside the bedroom.
"You can come on out, it's Reinhold and the Princess!" Marius shouts back.

And faster than you've ever seen her move before, Citrine runs out of the room and straight for you.

"Oh my god Reinhold we heard shouting after you left and Marius had me hide out in the bedroom while we waited for you to come back we were so worried that you'd gotten into a fight with all of them!!" "It's alright now," you say, hugging Citrine while taking care to avoid putting any pressure on her stomach. "I'm fine, the castle's fine, and so is everyone who those guys were targeting."
"I was so worried about you!" Citrine replies as she hugs you back. "So you two didn't get into any more fights after what happened before-"

And then she realizes that you're not with Karel this time. Letting you go, Citrine turns to Marianne.

"Sorry, your haircolor's the same and my eyes are all watery right now and-" Citrine stammers. "Er, where -is- your friend, anyways?"
"Karel?" you ask. "He's with Prince Emilio right now, I guess."
"That's good. I was worried about him too," she says with a tired smile. "And I'm happy to see that you also seem to be doing fine, Princess!"
"Thank you for your concern," Marianne replies.

"Well you -are- the Princess of our home country..." Citrine says as she takes Marianne's hands in hers. "And more importantly to me at least, you're also Reinhold's dear friend!"
"I- I don't know if that's really more important-" Marianne stammers.

And before the Princess can protest any further, Citrine wraps her arms around her and holds her in a tight embrace. Marianne had been doing her best to hold back all the fear, anxiety and everything else that she's been feeling since the attack, but It seems that this simple action is all it takes for all of that to break through her facade and send her bursting into tears.

"As scared as I was when I heard about what happened, I know it had to be even scarier for you," Citrine whispers in a motherly voice.

You're starting to tear up just watching it.

After a good five minutes or so of crying, Marianne's finally able to regain her composure and let go of Citrine, blushing profusely as she finally realizes what she's just done.

"S... sorry," Marianne mumbles as she dries off her face with a handkerchief, "we barely know each other but then I go and do something like that..."
"I don't mind at all," Citrine says with the same genuine smile that she always has. "Sometimes you jut don't feel better until you've cried it out... and I'm sure it must be even worse for a Princess like you who always needs to worry about appearances."
"Yes, you are right," she sighs. "And Reinhold, I expect you to keep yout mouth shut about this."
"My lips are sealed," you say, saluting to her. "Same goes for Marius here..."

wait, he was standing right by you- oh, he's sitting at the table.

"DAMMIT MARIUS I DON'T CARE HOW MUCH IT INSPIRES YOU SOME THINGS JUST AREN'T OKAY TO DRAW!!" Citrine shouts as she storms over to the table and snatches her husband's sketchbook away from him.

As you watch Citrine berate her husband for being insensitive, Marianne turns to you.

"You know that's going to be you and Luciana one day," Marianne says with a sly grin.
"I certainly hope not," you reply, wincing as Citrine smacks Marius upside the head with his own sketchbook.
"I don't know..."
"ANYWAYS," you say with a long sigh, "if you're able to tease me, I guess that means that you've bounced back already."
"I came along with you because I was hoping that your sister's cheery disposition would cheer me up some... it wasn't in the way that I wanted, but I am grateful for that," she sighs. "And you'd better not say a word of this to anyone outside this room. I mean it."

As you once again assure the Princess that her secret crying bout will remain a seret, Citrine and Marius head back over to the two of you, seemingly done with their lovers' spat.

>Citrine confusing Karel and Marianne
>"Y-you better not tell anyone, baka!"

I'm lost. Is it Marianne who's supposed to be secretly a man?

That's another reason why Karel would have made the perfect Marie bodyguard - they could just be magic'ed to look like each other and have lookalike shenanigans.
>>
"Soooo..." Citrine says, TIGHTLY grasping her husband's hand, "...is there anything new going on with you guys? Aside from the traitors and assorted other scary stuff, I mean."
"There is -one- thing, I suppose..." Marianne says, turning to you. "...I assume that you didn't have time to tell them the last time you were here, right?"
"...oh yeah," you say, mentally berating yourself for forgetting to mention something that important. "Umm... I'm kind of going out with Princess Luciana now?"

And then both Citrine and Marius stare at you as if you'd just grown another head or something.

"Princess Luciana. -Celestino's- daughter Luciana," Marius says, trying to make absolutely sure that he heard you right.
"That's right," Marianne says with an amused smirk. "Luciana Violetta di Marconetti, King Celestino's seventh child and my best friend... is in a romantic relationship with your brother here," she says, patting you on the back.

Thanks a lot, Marianne.

Reinhold must one-up everyone.

You're a Guard Captain? He's a Royal Bodyguard and technically outrank you. Why is that, btw?

You got your sword from your great-grandfather duellist? He got his sword from Volker fucking Eschenwald and he pulls a kick-ass great-grandmother out of nowhere.

You trained under all the mentors your mom could afford? He's training under Guillaume Arnaud.

You got molested? He was raped repeatedly for five years.

"I was hoping that you'd end up with that cute girl with the glasses," Citrine says, "but I'm still glad that you actually went ahead and... and with Princess Luciana, too!"
"Uh... is Celestino okay with you going out with his daughter?" Marius asks. "He's really protective of her in particular, and-"
"Yeah, he knows," you nod. "Pulled me aside and scared the hell out of me but he gave his approval so I shouldn't have to worry about him exploding me with some horrific magic spell or anything," you say with a weak smile.

And then Citrine starts giggling.

"So have you told Grandma yet?" she asks. "Because I KNOW that she'd love to hear that news."
"It kind of happened last night and I haven't seen Grandma since then so no, not yet," you shrug. "And it's not like I can go out there today, what with all the crazy crap going down right now. And we're leaving tomorrow..."

Now you're staring to feel really guilty about that.

"We'll be in town for a few more days so I'll tell her the next time I see her!" Citrine says, hugging you. "I bet that asshole from the duel is so jealous..."

"I dunno about that," you say with a nervous laugh as you remember that Monique's likely in love with Setsuranka.
"It's not like his opinion on anything matters anyways," Marianne says, rolling her eyes. "For all we know, he could be dating that sword of his."
"I hear you," Citrine giggles.

Citrine then tries to switch the focus onto Marianne and her own preferences in guys... but Marianne isn't having any of it, vehemently denying that there is anyone who she likes. She seems exceptionally annoyed when Emilio is brought up, as per the usual.

After a little bit more of this (and some covert sketching by Marius that the ladies seem to not notice), you and Marianne make your way back to the door...

"I guess we'll see you two later," you say. "Probably won't be back until we're all back in Granache, though..."
"That's okay, it's not like I don't know where to find you if I need you," Citrine says, playfully batting you on the chest.
"See you later," Marius says, waving. "And good luck with Luciana... and Celestino!"

And with that, you leave the happy couple in much better spirits than they were in when you came.

Looking over at Marianne, it's pretty clear that she's in a lot better mood than she was before. Though she still seems weary on account of everything that's happened, you're still pretty glad that you asked her to come along with you to see Citrine.

"It'll be nice to get back to Granache," you say to nobody in particular. "hopefully things'll be calmer there."
"Tell me about it," Marianne replies with a long sigh. "No offense to Luciana, but I don't want to come back here for a good long while."

And then she glances over to you.

"...though I suppose that you and Luciana's wedding will be the next event I have to attend in this country."
"Marianne..." you mumble. "Let's just head back to our suite already before they think we fell in a hole or something."
"And just as I'm finally starting to understand why Nicolette enjoys teasing people so much... very well."

rolling your eyes, you decide to ignore any further comments from Marianne and instead focus on getting to your destination... and then you notice Karel walking not too far down the hallway from you. It looks like she's by herself, too.

"Hm? I meant what I said," Karel replies. "I wish I was close to my allegedly super badassed father like Marianne is... or that he even knew that I exist," and then she notices the look on your face. "...but I didn't mean it in a jerk way so I guess I should apologize," she mumbles.

Good, now you don't have to make things worse by bringing up your own parental situation.

"Anyways, we ought to get going already," you say. "You coming, Marianne?"
"Yes, let's," Marianne replies.

With that, the two of you resume your journey back across the castle. And then you notice that Karel's walking right next to you.

"Uh, did you want something?" you ask.
"I was already going in this direction when you called out to me, remember?" Karel replies, rolling her eyes. "Emilio's room is over this way too."
"...that's right, our suites are in the same wing as the royal family's rooms..." Marianne sighs. "I suppose we're all going in the same direction, then."

"Not funny," Karel replies, shaking her head.

And as for Marianne... she doesn't even respond to your joke at all. You get that one was a miss.

"So, uh... any guesses as to who orchestrated this whole mess?" you ask.
"Dunno, probably some disgruntled noble with too much money or something," Karel replies absentmindedly. "Either that or Ancellotta."
"I doubt that even -they- would be stupid enough to risk starting a war like this when Krassato's already breathing down their necks," Marianne replies.

"Marianne..." you say, stepping in front of the Princess and placing a hand on the pommel of your sword.
"O- okay," the Princess stammers as she moves aside so that you and Karel can make a barrier between her and whatever it is that the guards are running outside to investigate.

"You idiots, make way!" a guard shouts, shooing the others who are blocking the entrance. "We have a wounded man here!"
"Wounded?" you say as you strain your eyes in order to try and make out whatever it is out there. You think you can see one man propping up a larger one who's covered in blood...
"Someone got injured while out there hunting down the traitors?" Karel asks.
"Looks like it," you reply. "It doesn't look like an attack, but I still can't make out who's coming in."

Both cautious and curious, the three of you decide to hang back until you know what exactly is going on. It's not until they make it through the gate that you're able to tell who exactly it is that's approaching...

"Gerhard!?" Marianne gasps.
"Wha-" you stammer.

And sure enough, it's Gerhard who is carrying a large injured man into the castle and shooing away the guards who approach.

"Call Sir Gregory or King Thierri over here!" he shouts, his voice ragged. "This is urgent!"
"The butler?" Karel says, a perplexed expression on her face. "But who's he- OH GOD! LEOPOLD!"

>how do you react?
>>
>>30829171

Heal him. Or ask Marianne if she can into healing.
>>
>>30829171

We should go get the king or Gregory, but we should obviously be surprised first.
>>
Maybe Marianne could hear the message if it's that urgent.

>>30829184
I doubt we're more skilled than Gerhard at healing.
>>
>>30829171
Send Karel running for Greg/Thierri. Meanwhile we should try to help and maybe find out what the shit is going on.
>>
>>30829171
Tell Karel to go get Gregory or Thierri urgently.
>>
>>30829184
Not a good idea. We could seriously fuck him up.
>>
>>30829184
It is more likely that we will make things worse than it already is.
>>
>>30829171
Try to stay calm. Stay with Marianne.

Karel knows the castle better so she'd probably be better suited for finding them, I think they're currently with Celestino, so ask her to tell them what's going on.

Then get a status update from Gerhard and ask if anyone followed them.

The strange thing is that Gerhard didn't call for Celestino, who's both the natural authority in the operation and one who's location is easier to find, since he's in official functions.

Will a healing grace help? Thats the one we know, right?
>>
>>30829266

It stops bleeding and heal minor wounds. So it's better than what I said in >>30829257 but it's not a big help.
>>
>>30829266
If he's seriously wounded probably not, without proper first aid to a misapplied healing spell can force the body to heal WRONG and permanently fuck the patient up, and we're no doctor, we wouldn't have the foggiest idea where all the fleshy bits are supposed to go.

That's assuming our one spell would even be strong enough.

I believe we know Refresh, which will heal all minor cuts and scrapes.

While Healing Grace is an upgrade of that, which will heal minor injuries and stop bleeding, it will not cure major wounds such as deep cuts or broken bones. Considering he came back from battle, it is possible it is either of those, and will not help the situation, unfortunately.

He'd need to go to a medical bay, or get stronger magic put on him. Even then, it's not smart of us to try something we just learned not a couple of days (weeks?) ago, but the thought is good I suppose. It's still in our best interest to get someone better than us, and also get the King or Gregory.

Do you people not realize this is exactly what causes quests to be inaccessible to newcomers? It causes your thread to be reduced to clutter for the vast majority of users. Additionally, don't quests have a defined end goal? This is less a quest and more a collective roleplay of a career.
>>
>>30829299
I'm pretty sure we know Healing Grace that was the spell we used to heal Luci
>>
>>30829299
We know Healing Grace, we learned it specifically because it's more combat-relevant. We didn't learn Refresh because while healing minor cuts and bruises is nice if you need to recover from a fight with an angry tomcat, it wouldn't fix a sprained ankle for example, and a sprained ankle when you've got to GOFAST can get you dead.
>>
As Karel races towards her injured mentor without a second thought, you turn to Marianne.

"Do you know any healing spells that can help him?" you ask. "I mean, all I know is Healing Grace, and..."
"I- I'm not sure," Marianne shakes her head. "We'd have to see how bad his injuries are-" she gasps. "oh god is that a hole in his-"

Damn it, she's really not suited for situations like this.

"Calm down and breathe," you say, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Th...thank you," she nods. "I'm fine... let's go see how bad his injuries are first."

The two of you hurry over to Gerhard, who is now talking with a completely frantic Karel.

"What the fuck happened to him!?" Karel screams. "Who did this!?"
"Takamaru and I arrived just as a masked man fled the scene," Gerhard replies, his face twisted into a hate-filled snarl. "I managed to perform first aid on him to stop most of the heavy bleeding, but the other knight who was with him was dead when we got there."
"So Sir Armin is..." Karel buries her face in her hands and starts to hyperventilate. "But- what about Leopold, is he gonna be alright...?"

>[1/?]
>>
>>30829349
>>30829350

Ah, my mistake then. Yeah, makes sense we'd learn Healing Grace over Refresh.
>>
>>30829347

According to OP we're somewhere behind half of the story he had in mind.

Yeah, it's slow paced. But OP is good at the stuffing. Making it go faster would lose it much of its appeal.

"Er," Marianne mumbles as the two of you approach. "I might he able to help if it's not too serious."
"Not unless you can heal third-degree burns and holes that were gouged by... I don't even know, Princess," Gerhard says, shaking his head. "But if you could at least direct me to the infirmiry, I'd at least be able to place him on a bed."
"I'll take you right there!" Karel shouts.
"At least -someone- in this castle's staff is worth a damn," Gerhard growls. "Now if someone could PLEASE call Sir Gregory or King Thierri or even your own King..."
"We'll take care of that," you say, turning to Marianne. "You know where they went, right?"
"Yes, let's hurry!" Marianne squeaks.

Parting ways, you and Marianne head for the conference room that her father and the others are supposed to be at right now while Karel leads Gerhard to the infirmiry and barking orders to the guards.

Seeing Karel all distraught like that reminds you of when Adrien showed up at the brothel that day...

...no, that's the last thing you want to think about right now. Best to hurry before it's too late.

How much you wanna bet that there's a target in Granache that whoever is behind this is after and they're taking advantage of half the court being away and Arnauld is devoting intrigue assets to the other kingdoms problem?
We finally get back only to find out something back home was hit and hard and we still won't have any idea what the fuck.

That doesn't certainly sound good. But if I recall, doesn't the crystal stuff we have on turn into tendrils of some sort? I'm guessing the thing that stabbed him might have been someone who knows about the crystal's behavior.

... Of course, this is all baseless speculation. Third degree burns sounds like the work of a dragon for sure.

>>30829552
Probably claws, given the burns. Which means they have a proper dragon.

>>30829552
Or a fire devil-kin, isn't the number of devil-kin/halfdragons a bit strange though? I know that yeah they're mercs and all but they're all seemingly unaffiliated from each other just seems off.

Yeah, I'm about to pass out any minute now. As such, I'm going to have to call it a thread here.
It was fun though, and I hope to get to more unpleasantness next time... I also kind of wish I'd introduced these two earlier in the story so you'd actually know what they were capable of.
guess that's something to keep in mind for the future
