"It's a gun..." Mako says, staring at at the object resting on a series of wooden blocks on the floor. You massage your wounded foot while sitting on a trunk nearby. "I don't recognize it." She says a few seconds later, nudging the massive cannon with her foot.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and you're a bit hurt that nobody has asked you if you're okay- not surprised given Rose and Mako's typical aloofness. Miho will probably care, though. "Think its German?" You ask, standing up painfully. With two and a half German tanks on the team, a German gun upgrade could be a big help.

Rose nods. "Everything else in the room looks German-" She kneels down to look at the barrel. "Too small for an 88..." She comments, gauging the barrel opening with her hand. "Four fingers... It's a 75mm."

Oh? Do tell. All the impression I had from those engagements were Japanese tanks getting clobbered by Shermans like, well, Shermans getting slaughtered by Tigers. No detailed personal accounts or such.

Though the dug-in anti-tank guns the Japanese employed were more successful on that role, if I recall correctly.

After Kuromoromine, it's Chi-Ha-Tan (proper Japanese), Blue Division (Spanish), and I'm also stumped on that last one.

You pull out your phone and take a picture of the cannon. "I'm gonna head back up topside- Yukari should know what it is..." You say before turning and limping off up the hall towards the stairs to the deck. As you emerge into the now-late afternoon light, you blink before pulling your phone out and calling Yukari.

"Hi Russells!" She says cheerfully. "What's up?"

"We've been checking the storage lockers belowdeck and we found a cannon- we think its a German 75mm." You say. "Hold on I'll send you a picture..." You say, before pulling up a text message to send her the picture.

"Wait." She says. "The barrel break- how many baffles?" She asks before you get a chance to send it.

"Just one set-" You start before Yukari interrupts you again.

"Ball-shaped?" She asks rapidly.

"Yep."

"How long was the barrel?"

You shake your head. "I dunno... maybe ten feet?" Yukari is quiet for a few seconds as she thinks. "You sure you don't want a pic-"

"Assuming its German, sounds like a Kwk-40." She says triumphantly. "They used them on the F2-series Panzer IVs..." She continues before stopping for a second. "Wait, you guys found a Kwk-40 for the Panzer IV!"

It's a huge improvement over the Kwk-37- it's just a infantry support gun; the Kwk-40 is a proper anti-tank gun!" She makes a cannon noise over the phone. She's about to go off on a rant- you feel bad cutting her off but you've got something else to ask. "Yukari, wait... We can talk about that later- what about the B1?" You ask. "You guys find any information on where it went?"

"Well- we know its underwater somewhere." She says. "Insurance reports were talking about potential water damage... We learned a lot more about the tank itself too." She pauses and you hear paperwork in the background. "It's a B1 bis- it was originally manufactured in June 1939 and was in service until July 1940... It was knocked out-"

Not entirely accurate. Pic related, the only one they made in any numbers.

Of course, like many Japanese smallarms, it's a pile of shit. The mechanism is complex and jams easily in jungle conditions, the bullet is underpowered, and the gun itself has awful balance because some knucklehead thought a big, heavy magazine sticking out of the side was a good idea.

>>
>>30825708
Oh, the Owen gun.

I still maintain that the Australians gave it a top-down magazine because they felt the general insult alone of having an untrained 20-year-old Digger making a better SMG than the world's most industralised nations wasn't offensive enough, so they made it look like the gun was constantly flipping off everyone in the vicinity, too.

>>30825708

1. every operation up until Iwo Jima had casualties favoring the US, for >>30825760 said.
2. They did have places to train, just not in Japan. plenty of military forces do training outside their own country.
>>30825777
1. cheap: Positives=can make millions of easy to learn weapons for little cost. Negatives=not resistant to malfunctions, like jamming (and good god, that thing jammed)
2. What's the bucket test? my test consists of "if you dump it in a hostile environment, how long can you leave it there and still have a guy pick it up and fire it right then and there."
>>
>>30825842

The bucket test:

1. Put your gun in a bucket large enough to totally contain the gun, e.g. no parts above the lip.

2. Fill the bucket with your test substance. Sand, mud, water, whatever your gun will be exposed to in it's operating environment.

3. Remove the gun from the bucket and attempt to fire it. Full points if the gun fires immediately. Partial credit if the gun needs immediate action. Half credit if the gun needs a bit of fiddling. One quarter credit if you need to field strip it. No credit if the gun is fouled.
>>
>>30825896
great minds really do think alike. My test just adds time exposed, AKA, bias for the AK47.
>>
>>30825842
> "if you dump it in a hostile environment, how long can you leave it there and still have a guy pick it up and fire it right then and there."

Well,

>The Owen has a simple blowback design, firing from an open bolt. It was designed to be fired either from the shoulder or the hip. It is easily recognisable, owing to its unconventional appearance, including the top-mounted magazine, and the side-mounted sight required to allow the firer to aim past it. The placement of the magazine allows gravity to assist the magazine spring in pushing cartridges down to the breech, which improves feeding reliability. Another unusual feature is the separate compartment inside the receiver, which isolates the small-diameter bolt from its retracting handle by means of a small bulkhead. This prevents dirt and mud from jamming the bolt, and makes the Owen a highly reliable weapon. Like the Sten, and Austen, the Owen had a non-folding wire buttstock, but also had pistol grips.

Owen is AK-tier "Cannot foul this shit ever".

Also, It hits the "cheap" button despite that:

>Approximately 45,000 Owens were produced from 1942 to 1944.[1] During the war the average cost to manufacture the Owen submachine gun was $30.
>>
>>30825969
ok, for "Cannot foul this shit ever" (great title, totally stealing) tier weapons we have AK 47 and the Owen, any other weapon we should add?
>>
>>30826021

Certain actions lean towards reliability. Revolvers, for example. I am unaware of any sort of mechanical jam that would be POSSIBLE in a revolver.
>>
>>30826114
not coming from bad parts/manufacturing, or ammunition, of course.
>>
>>30825623

>>"Find anything about other tanks?"

There's still a Chi-Nu out there, isn't there?
>>
>>30826181
forget that, we have a turbo-panther to find!
>>
>>30826159

Well now we need to quantify what kinds of malfunctions we're talking about and what causes them. It's not all due to design.

Some jams can be caused by poor material quality (bad powder causing a chamber fouling, poor metal causing a breech or barrel blowout), while others can be created due to poor handling by the operator (bad grip on the magazine causing a feed stoppage, soft grip causing a stovepipe). Still more arise from simple wear and tear.
>>
>>30826216
No, we don't.
>>
>>30826228
'the bucket' tests environmental longevity endurance, which can be affected by build materials and mechanical design. Let's stick with the latter for simplicity's sake.
>>30826239
I don't know about you, but until BlackJack says otherwise, I say we're Panther hunting.
>>
As you talk with Yukari, you get an idea. But for now, you've got other things to worry about. "Water damage- So are we sure it wasn't just dropped off the side of the ship or something?" You ask, partially dreading what the answer may be.

"Negative." Yukari says. "There's a lot of back-and-forth here between the insurance company and the school over whether the tank was recoverable or not- If it was dropped into the ocean there would be no doubt from either side- it would cost more to recover it than to replace it." Yukari pauses. "No, it's definately somewhere on the ship- actually there aren't a lot of places it could be."

"Bodies of water..." You muse. "Well, I think the river is too shallow to lose a tank in..."

"There's a bunch of open-air reservoirs, though." Yukari says. "They're designed to help catch fresh rain water for purification into drinking water for the ship. There's actually one near the tank grounds! If it's a practice accident that's probably the place!"

"Alright!" You say, excited to finally have a definite lead. "I'll get a team together. And Yukari?" You ask before hanging up.

"Russells?" Yukari replies.

"Don't tell Miho about the Kwk-40 yet."

Well then you'll be paying attention to the action. Reciever, bolt, block. Those three control the mechanical reliability.

Kings of this hall: AK-47, the Owen gun, Most well-made revolvers (special honors: the model 29 .44 magnum and Colt single action Army).

Honorable mentions: The Hotchkiss machine gun, Glock semiautomatic pistol, MG-42 (it had to be, with the rate of fire it could sustain), Browning M2HB machine gun, Henry repeating rifle, and M1911 pistol.

That's from about 10 minutes of internetting. I might be wrong with some of them, but famous guns are generally also pretty reliable. Unless they're famous for jamming.

Ah, huh...what...huh?

No, sorry, that thing was shit no matter what cartridge it fired. Yes, the 30-06 made it worse, but it made worse severe issues that were already there.

It had an open-sided magazine that basically fed dirt straight into the action. It had bad magazine design that caused feed failures if you loaded all 20 rounds, forcing gunners to only load 18-19 shots instead. It had a crummy bipod and a long-recoil bolt that made sustained fire a nightmare. And even in 8mm Lebel it overheated (with no way to change the barrel, I might add) after less than 500 rounds.

It was a crap gun. You are literally the first person I've ever met who defends the thing. Are you French, and if you are, why are you defending THAT thing instead of a much finer French weapon, like, say, the Hotchkiss?

Can Yukari secretly be a trap? That way she can be sandwiched between Miho and Russels.

She'll be inside Miho and Russels will be inside "her"

Yukari is not a sandwich.

Plain Miho x Yukari and Russels x Yukari is nice, but not ideally romantic.

It's like Russels and Miho on a date, and each one gets their own chocolate milkshake.

It's far more romantic and cute if the two of them share a milkshake, double-straw style.

(The Milkshake is Yukari)

An hour later the sun is low in the sky off the port bow. You stand at the edge of the small, deep storage pond- most of the team was here; Yukari had left the history team to continue to comb through records, but she'd brought Anzu, Momo and Yuuzu. Additionally you'd brought up everyone who'd been below decks- Miho and the rest of Anglerfish. The mechanics were also present. Additionally Rose, your gunner. (You'd managed to brief them on the Kwk-40 and they'd agreed to keep its discovery a secret for now.)

"How do we figure out if its down there?" You ask Yukari, looking at the calm surface- though artificial in nature, the schoolship's designers had taken care to make it look natural, with shallow shores before a precipitous underwater drop into the actual storage tank. "How deep is it?"

"About twenty feet- we'll need to dive to confirm if its down there." You aren't a huge fan of swimming. Or holding your breath while doing so. Luckily Yukari claps you on the back. "Luckily I got my scuba certification last summer! But it's too late today..." She says happily.

"We're going to need a recovery vehical for this, anyway." Nakajima comments. "Thirty ton tank down there- and most of the lift is going to be vertical..." She nods and rubs her chin. "We'll need specialized equipment for this."

>"Hana, you smell anything?"

Isn't the Tiger (P) turretless now? Maybe the Automobile Club jury rigged it into a Bergetiger (P) until they can get the turret back in.

Also, installing that gun we found into the Panzer IV.

Additionally, get the Sodoclones into this. This will be their vehicle for the tournament afterall.

What's the difference between spaced armor and applique armor?

Also how much armor does each give and where does it apply?
>>
>>30827511
Well at some point, I'd probably want to see Anzu X Patrick X Erika threesome ship, AKA Sweet Potato X Irish Potato X Kartoffel.
But I'm probably not gonna hold my breath for that.
>>
>>30827842
....that is nice one.
>>
>>30827836
Spaced armour is 2 armour plates with space in between the two. Schurzën is an example of it.

Applique armour is just extra armour put onto existing armour. The Centurion Mk 3 to 6 is an example of this.
>>
>>30827863
how much armored protection does it give tanks.

how much dies it weigh the tank down
>>
>>30827836
Applique can be anything, doesn't even have to be a factory kit. A lot of Sherman Crews applied applique armor in the form of extra plates, concrete, and sandbags. The purpose is to straight up thicken the armor

Spaced armor is intended to prematurely detonate HEAT rounds, destabilize penetrators, they also serve as extra armor being lighter than Applique and providing less armor.
>>
>>30827883
How much does it weigh a tank down.

I recently read/skimmed over several tank books at my local barnes and nobles, so I was curious
>>
>>30827532
>"Hana, you smell anything?"
No idea what this will net us to be honest, we already know this tank is there.
>>
>>30827902

It depends entirely on what kit is used. Sandbags for example do not improve the armour immensely and weigh a ton, so draw your own conclusions from that.
>>
>>30827902
Depends on the plating.

Seriously, there is essentially no consistency. You have to take each case individually.
>>
>>30827902
Depends on how much shit you put on. The field applied Applique wasn't standardised, apart from 14th Armored Division who set up workshops to produce shelves to hold sandbags on their Shermans.
A lot of crews put on what they thought was necessary

Schurzën doesn't add much. They're usually anywhere between 5-10mm thick, and weigh very little. Against HEAT it changes the standoff distance, against small caliber rounds it causes premature fragmentation. Tank rounds tend to just ignore it.

Applique can be anything from 30mm (Pz IV Ausf. J) to 60mm (Centurion Mk 5/1). Both were 5 tonne upgrades.

I see.

Another thing I read up was the Canadian Tanks. Which I found kind of interesting though the books themselves did not say much about them

The Ram and the Grizzly

While I know they lost due to the Massive numbers they can produce in Shermans (almost like what happen to the Sentinel) However how effective we're they compared to them.

Especially the Grizzly since it seemed like an upgraded version of the M4A1, with upgraded slope armor (and some equipped with the 17 pdr )

To let's say to other variants like the Firefly and Easy Eight.

Speaking of Sherman Variants, the one thing I'm confused between the variants was the different engines they used, which one's were better compared to each other.

Sorry for asking all these questions but I'm generally curious
>>
>>30827975
>While I know they lost due to the Massive numbers they can produce in Shermans (almost like what happen to the Sentinel) However how effective we're they compared to them.

Ram was built off the M3 Lee and had the 2pdr (Mk 1) and 6pdr (Mk 2). Not much better than the standard Sherman at AP, much worse at HE.

>Especially the Grizzly since it seemed like an upgraded version of the M4A1, with upgraded slope armor (and some equipped with the 17 pdr )

It's not upgraded, it's just a M4A1 with British tracks and radio. The 17pdr Sherman is the Firefly (Sherman IC, IC Hybrid, VC)

>Speaking of Sherman Variants, the one thing I'm confused between the variants was the different engines they used, which one's were better compared to each other.
M4/M4A1: Petrol, Radial A/C Engine. 400 net HP
M4A2: Diesel, 2 engines. 375 net HP
M4A3: Petrol, V8. 450 net HP.
M4A4: Petrol, Multibank (5) engine: 370 net HP.
M4A6: Petrol, Radial A/C engine: 450 net HP
>>
>>30828057
I heard the Grizzly had bettter sloping armor then the M4A1 and also something about track pins though I do not recall much from the book. Also it had said that a small number of Grizzlies were equipped with the 17pdr.

So in terms of performance it is

M4A3: Petrol, V8. 450 net HP.
M4A6: Petrol, Radial A/C engine: 450 net HP
M4/M4A1: Petrol, Radial A/C Engine. 400 net HP
M4A2: Diesel, 2 engines. 375 net HP
M4A4: Petrol, Multibank (5) engine: 370 net HP.

Well considering the M4A4 was mostly used to export to other lend lease countries to its understandable
>>
>>30828057
>It's not upgraded, it's just a M4A1 with British tracks and radio. The 17pdr Sherman is the Firefly (Sherman IC, IC Hybrid, VC)
Incorrect. It had thicker, more sloping armour, had a longer range, and, most notably was fitted with Canadian Dry Pin tracks (CDP) tracks, which did not require rubber, a scarce wartime material and were superior in practice to the basic Sherman ones anyway.

The CDP track was lighter and simpler than the standard US tracks and did not require rubber, which was scarce since the Japanese advance into Southeast Asia.

A small batch of Grizzlies were fitted with an Ordnance QF 17-pounder for training but none saw action.

You should be looking at Torque as well, as the Transmissions are the same through the models and therefore the gearing.
Radials and Diesels (Though for Diesel engines this isn't surprising) appear to have a very large powerband when compared to the GAA, so the gearing is relatively important
>>
>>30828139
I find your claims dubious, considering the 15.5" CDP is less wide than the 16.5" T51, the loaded weight for the M4A1 is ~500 lbs different to the Grizzly and they used the same engine and fuel tank layout.

Pray tell your sources for this, because it seems Mr. Chamberlain is in error if you are correct.

You notice Hana, standing with her eyes closed. "Hana?" You ask, getting her attention. She's shown herself to have an amazing sense of smell- but finding a twenty-year-old submerged tank? "Hana, you smell anything?" Rose is already looking at you like you're insane.

Hana closes her eyes again and inhales before nodding. "It's very faint- but I smell... oil." She says, quietly. "And... iron." It's good enough for you, but you look at Miho- its her team.

She smiles. "Alright, Yukari- can you bring scuba gear to practice tomorrow morning?" She says, looking at her loader. "We need to know if its down there first- then we can worry about how to recover it." She looks out over the surface of the pond. "Good work, everyone- Go get some rest." She smiles as she dismisses the afternoon's practice.

"So, I'll see you tomorrow morning, Russells!" She says with a smile and a small wink. You nod back at her as she turns to go home.

"Hey, Nakajima-" You say as Miho leaves. "Got a favor to ask you for..."

Having looked up the books and the Canadian Department of National Defense archives, I conclude the following.

Bullshit.

The Canadian director of design of the Equipment and Mechanization branch himself said the tank would be identical to the M4A1 except using Canadian components where convenient.
