This is a starcraft 1 based quest. I generally try to follow lore and game, but I'm not an encyclopedia and haven't read any of the books. For weaponry and powers I’m not always going to strictly follow canon. This gives me greater freedom to allow character customisation and diversity.

I use D20, best of first three rolls, 1 and 20 are crits and cancel each other out. Skills will adjust DC, not give bonuses, for simplicity's sake. Health is narrative based on the game.
The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
>>
>Last time on freelance ghost quest.
>You told Haverdam what happened with the alien device and the expedition went back to Frontier. There, you found Mr Weissdammer being in town with a marine escort and a bodyguard/butler who was likely to be psychic. You were invited by Lisa to have dinner with her, and went to Murphy for advice. You then had a pleasant dinner with Lisa, talking about recent happenings and her psionic powers.

“Thanks for the meal. It was really good.” You say, as you make your way to the door.

“It’s nothing.” She replies, blushing slightly. “And those flowers… You shouldn’t have.”

“Well, I bought others first, but Murphy advised me not to give those. Apparently giving a tomato plant is’t acceptable in these kinds of situations.”

Lisa suppresses a laugh. “I… Yeah, that would have been unusual.”

As you exit her house and put on your mask again, she says ”It was nice, tonight.” For a moment, you feel her hesitating about something, but she holds back.

“Good night.”

“Good night.”

You head straight for your house. Home? Has it become ‘home’ already? You suppose it has. The Ghost academy and the Omega project never felt like a home. This is yours, well, rented, but still. It’s a tangible piece of your freedom. You decide that yes, is indeed home.

The first thing you do when you get home is water your new tomato plant. It seems the homes do have some water supplied directly to them, but it’s limited per day so for larger quantities you’d have to go to the well at the center of the village. It provides enough for you to drink from and to water the plant though.

You sit down on your bed, remove your mask, and begin your mental descent. You start with your memories, you feel like it’s almost complete so it won’t take much more work.

-You finally feel like you have all your memories again. Your earliest are of a punishment for stealing food of a guard. You’re not entirely sure what it was but it hurt a lot. You estimate you were roughly 6 years old.-

-The memories continue in that line. The training was hard, and the punishments were even harder. Free time was almost non-existent, put during the daily evening sparring you could get away with slight socialisation with the others.-

-When you were 10, your psionics surfaced, slightly behind most others, but sextus and quintus were still a few weeks after you. Primus had them since he was roughly 8 years old, and did not pass up on opportunities to rub it into your noses.-

-As you grew older, everyone grew stronger, faster and psionically more powerful than you, making you primus’ favourite target. You’re not sure how, but you were convinced he rigged the random partner assignment with the sparring so he’d get you more often.-
[1/2]
>>
>>30800568

No, they are not.
>>
-In the end, several of you died. Octavus was first. Overcame his aggression inhibitor and attacked a guard. After that, it was tertius, with a psionic overload. He was probably your closest friend there. Quintus was last, pulling the trigger on himself.-

-The only ones left were you, primus, quartus and sextus. Project Omega was deemed a partial success but put on hold until further studies would improve the results. That’s when you were sent away from the specially built battlecruiser the project was held in, leaving only Primus, Quartus, Sextus and Septimus behind.-

You snap out of the memories. You feel like you just relived your entire life at a thousand times regular speed. All the pain, all the emotions, however stunted they might have been, came crashing into you, and you gasp for air for a moment.

So… That’s done now. Only, septimus wasn’t there anymore either. Did he die too? Or did he get away from Primus. He was one of the most inventive of the group, and a sort of father figure, despite being the same age.

You descend into your mind again and head back to your conditioning. You zoom around the mental fortress, bombarding it with attacks while it tries to defend itself. It stands strong though. It seems to be sturdier than you thought before. You can wear it down, but you’re beginning to think that without the actual data on it it’ll be a long and hard fight to get through entirely. Probably longer than you have before Primus finds you.

After over an hour of mental battling, you pull back out of your own mind. It was exhausting, and even though you physically feel fine, you don’t think you can still accomplish much.

>It’s roughly 11:00pm
>1. Just go to bed.
>2. Test out your psionics a bit, get some more feel with your strengthened powers. You’re tired but you think you could still manage this.

You let your exhaustion take you and let yourself fall backwards into your bed. It doesn’t take too long to fall asleep.

-“Yes, I sensed it too.” Huh, that doesn’t sound like anything you’ve ever heard. It sounds alien, but comprehensible. “Something terrible has awoken.”-

-You feel like your mind is suddenly pulled away somewhere else. “Yes, that signal a few days enough was almost enough to lock on to him. It will only take a few more days.”-

-Again, your mind is torn away from where it is. You stand, well, as much as an incorporeal mind can, on a featureless blue plain. Strange and dark clouds hang in the sky. In fron of you is a Protoss.-

-“Hmm. Curious to see that it is a Terran who did this.” He seems to talk as if you’re not there, but he’s clearly scrutinising you entirely. “I will be watching.”-

You wake up very well rested. It’s still early, most people will only be getting up in 30-60 minutes or so. It probably has to do with your body needing less sleep now.

You quickly give your tomato plant some more water and head out. You haven’t really used much of your psionics yet since your… ‘upgrade’, so you figure it’s time to see what you can actually do.

Just to be on the safe side in case people would see you going out and notice a lot of commotion in the direction you went, you activate your cloak to slip through the only just opened gates. You walk for a short while before deactivating it, and walk for another ten minutes to be sure you’re far enough away.

You found yourself a decent spot. It’s a bit rockier here, though the vegetation has covered most of it. You start by lifting a small boulder. As it pulls free from the vines growing over it, you find that while before you’d be hard pressed to do so, now you don’t even have to focus that hard. You lift some larger rocks while keeping the first one levitating, and you start feeling more strain.

You notice your psionic control goes a lot more instinctive than your body when it just happened. You can make the boulders zoom around very accurately and without too much trouble. Deciding you’ve managed this pretty well, you drop the large boulders and move on to lifting every rock around you about the size of your fist or slightly larger, and making them fly in intricate patterns. Immediately, you feel a lot more strained than before, and rocks start smashing into each other after a short while. Controlling multiple objects has always been a lot harder, but you’re surprised how well you did anyway.

Eventually, you decide to really let loose. You gather power into your hand and throw it out on front of you, manifesting it as a kinetic wave. The tree immediately in front of you is ripped to shreds, and several trees behind it are at least partially uprooted.
[1/2]
>>
Gathering energy again, you now try something different. Instinctively, somehow, you know how to do it. You had seen some of the others do it at the Omega Project, but you were never powerful enough to pull it off. Now you clearly are. You project the energy to a tree in front of you, and it explodes. The top of the tree is still intact, but disconnected from its bottom, as an almost perfect orb of matter was completely obliterated.

Feeling confident of your control and abilities, you decide to drive things to the limit, to see how powerful you have become. You don’t hold back, at least you try to. You still feel your conditioning tugging away at the back of your mind, holding you back. It doesn’t seem to matter to the forest around you though, as waves of energy literally ripple off you when you release it around you. The immediate area is wrecked, and you’re confident you know your limit now, but it took you too long for something like that to be practical in combat.

>It’s about 8:30 now
>1. Continue training there, but your body this time. You’ve just created an excellent parcours from all the wreckage.
>2. Go back to Frontier, Lisa should be awake now so she could test you while you talk to ‘Mittens’.

You decide to quickly make use of the wreckage you just made to do some exercises. You dash over the boulders, roll out of the way of imaginary enemy fire, slide under the trunk of a tree to take cover. The more you practice you have the more confident you get in your movements. You don’t want to spend too much more time out here but you did at least some work.

You head back to Frontier, and while the prospect of trying to jump over the wall seems thrilling for a moment, you decide to wait until after you’re sure you’ve mastered your abilities. You cloak and quickly slip in again and head towards Lisa’s lab.

On the way, you buy some breakfast, making a mental note to perhaps someday try to make your own. It’d save you some money, and apparently most people can actually prepare food in some way.

When you arrive at Lisa’s lab, you notice an odd smell hanging around it even with the door closed. A short moment after you knock, Lisa opens the door, wearing a white lab coat splattered with blood, protective goggles and a white mouth mask. The stench of decomposition spreads the moment she appears, and you suddenly feel very lucky that your mask is protecting you from the worst.

“Hey Artemis.” She seems cheerful.

“Hey, I came to give you that sample and to check on Mittens now.”

“Ok. Come in.” As you enter the building, you notice that she’s working on what’s left of the Stalker’s head, several flies zooming around it. The rest is absent, but probably stored in a cooler place. She leads you to a small fridge where she takes some tools. A short swab of your mouth later, she stores what she took in the fridge.

“I’ll keep you informed when I find something, but right now the Stalker corpse sadly needs my attention or it’ll be a waste.” She points towards the head.

“Hmm, yeah, now that you mention it. I’ll come along.” She quickly waves all flies off the head and covers it with a plastic sheet. As she starts getting rid of the bloodied clothing, you take the opportunity to address her psychic training.

“So, when would be the best time to start training you?”

“Huh? Oh, that. Well, tonight would be ok. I’ll be working late and eating here, so… Around 8?” She removes the mouth mask and quickly exits the lab.

“Sure, shouldn’t be a problem.”

After a short walk you arrive at the cage holding the Stalker. It’s been added on quite a lot since you last saw it. It actually has some room to move around now, and has a small shelter to protect it from rain.

Observing Lisa as she communicates with Mittens is interesting. She actually says words out loud, but you can feel her mentally reaching out to the stalker, who opens up its mental defences to communicate with her in turn. After a short while, Lisa turns back to you.

“Right, I’ve done my best explaining who you are and that you’re a friend even though you captured her. She’s not too happy but I think she’ll give it a shot. I’ll stick around for a few minutes and if nothing goes wrong I’ll go back to work.”

“Ok, thanks.”

You send it images of frontier, of you living there, and sleeping there. Of you waking up to find it under attack, and trying to take down the attacker without killing it.

In response, you get fierce images back. Anger. Humans coming into the temple. Despite psychic warnings. The feeling you just tried to convey in your own images, that of protecting one’s home, are now reflected back at you. They were warned, and they went on anyway, so retribution was in order.

When the image has sunk in a bit and you’re trying to formulate a response, it suddenly sends more. A mixture of rage and sadness now. Of hearing cries in the distance. Hundreds of voices suddenly silenced in the distance. And then a flash of power, which you recognise as your own. And you’re quite sure mittens does too.

It’s accusing you of genocide of its species. After your kind thread on its home uninvited and after several warnings to turn back. Retribution was justified, but the Terran response was to slaughter all of its kind.

>How do you respond?
>1. Convey that you didn’t realise they could communicate. That the warnings they gave were probably not even noticed because Terrans generally don’t have psionics.

Convey psychic abilities are RARE among humans, and that a warning they can't understand isn't one.

Convey our limited upbringing (spare it as much pain as possible). Convey sadness and shame at not doing more to save Mitten's fellows. Ask it what it guards, why it guards the site, and what we can do to help.
>>
You think for a moment and put together a reply. You send it images of a deaf and blind child, with a human trying to warn it not to go further. You convey images of normal humans being sent messages with the messages sliding off without them noticing. Another image, one of a giant crowd of thousands and thousands of humans, with only two people noticing the messages.

The next set of images is about the expedition they attacked. You show Mittens Haverdam, studying pieces of architecture and furniture. Then, monsters, stalkers, suddenly jumping at them without them realising why. You focus for a moment to try and make it clear that they simply wanted to study it, and had no aggressive intent. But in desperation the humans destroyed the breeding chamber in an effort to stop the attacks of beasts that had killed many without anyone understanding why.

Mittens seem to be taken aback by this, and while its fire is still burning hot, it seemed to have accepted your explanation.

You send it more images. The temple. And feelings. Doubt. Mystery. You do your best to try and ask who made it.

In return, you get an image of the statues at the front, and their psychic presence. The way mittens shows them is benevolent, but it’s definitely the same statues you almost woke up. The next image you get is that of something looking exactly like the statues, but alive. It’s too shrouded in mist to be able to see more of its features than the statues themselves though. It seems the stalkers don’t really know much more either.

You continue on to the machines. You show them both of the devices and what they did to you.

You didn’t expect its reaction. It violently lashes out at you, but you manage to withstand it. All you get from it now is anger that you used them. You’re even pulled back to the real world as Mittens jumps at the bars of its cage, desperately trying to reach you through them with its claws. All the calm it had when Lisa was talking to it now gone.

You pull back from the cage a bit, and as you do it stops rattling its cage so much. It’s still leering at you though. At least you found out what exactly they were supposed to be guarding.

You decide it’s best to let Lisa know what happened, and head back to her lab. She opens the door just as you arrive.

“Hey Artemis. Huh. You didn’t knock, did you?” You quickly shake your head. “Must be some kids then…” She invites you in and closes the door behind you.

“Actually I was planning on knocking on the door, and no one else did. I think it must be the psychic powers. A little bit of prescience. But that’s not what I came here for. I expect you’re busy,” She nods at that, ”so I just popped in to tell you how my talk went.”

You quickly tell her everything of what you talked about with Mittens, and how strongly it reacted when you showed the devices.

“Damn… That’s a shame. I was hoping you two’d get along a bit.”

You leave her to her work and go outside again.

>1. Go check out the armoury, Weissdammer should be gone by now so you’ll just have to get past the marines he left behind.
>2. Check on Haverdam, update him on what you found out and see if he got anything from that tube yet.
>3. Write in.

Sneak past and see what is missing

the armoury is going to be tricky as the marines are more likely to notice the door opening than the residents...

dam it just in the time limit. I really want that rifle, it'll help a lot when we have our family reunion

We'd have to spend some time practicing sharpshooting and run a risk of creating a new enemy, as there's no chance a missing canister rifle would go unnoticed.

You head to Haverdam’ house. You figure he could use the information you gathered from Mittens too. A short walk later, you find yourself knocking at his door. There’s no immediate reaction, and after half a minute or so you knock again, but harder. Your guess is he’s too absorbed in his work to notice otherwise.

Finally, the door opens, and Haverdam greets you. “Good morning, Mr Artemis, to what do I owe the pleasure?” He gestures for you to come in.

You take the time to look around for a moment, and you see that most of the older stones have been dumped into a corner. The machinery that was at the bottom and top of the breeding tube the men disassembled are lying on the biggest table, and some other random tidbits found in the temple are scattered around.

“I just… ‘talked’ to the Stalker I caught before we left. They seem to be moderately intelligent. It didn’t seem to know anything more about who built the place, but it went berserk as I mentioned the devices that changed me. I think it shows pretty clearly what they were there to protect. It wasn’t even nearly as enraged when we talked about the destruction of the breeding room.”

“Hmm, yes, fascinating. So that means that in order to protect their technology, these precursors completely bent a race to their will and adapted them to their needs, if I understand correctly from what miss Fringers has told me. I think it would be a good idea to prevent any other psychic from going near those devices. I wouldn’t even dare to imagine what that temple would do if it could breed super powerful human psychics to use.”

That IS a disturbing idea. You begin to wonder if it wouldn’t just be better to destroy the temple, or at least the devices themselves. If you’re getting a family visit soon, you wouldn’t want Primus to get his hands on it either.

>1. Tell Haverdam you should destroy it. Perhaps bombarding it with your Wraith’s missiles would do the trick.
>2. Tell Haverdam you should dismantle them so they can’t be used anymore wile leaving him the option of studying it.
>3. Tell Haverdam you should sabotage them at least, so neither the temple or a malicious psychic could use them for their own gain anymore.
>4. Talk about something else (specify what).
>5. Leave Haverdam alone, go somewhere else (specify what you’re going to do).
>6. Write in.

>End of Freelance Ghost Quest #13. I’ll stick around for a bit longer for questions/criticism. Votes now will be counted for the opening post of next thread. Not sure when that will be yet, the Pfeiffer has been acting up lately. Follow the twitter to be kept up to date.

"If it's this old, most of the things we can do will most likely do next-to-nothing. We can either ask the Stalkers for help, which would be dangerous for me, try to wake up one of the statues, which would be even more dangerous...thoughts?"

Don't forget, Supervisor, we still need to meet up with the mechanic about our Wraith.

If we're going to mess with the temple at all, I'd rather just dismantle it. And preferably have someone else hide the pieces so the information can't be extracted from our brain if things came to worst.

Maybe ask Professor if he learned anything more about those 'precursors'

Also, cheers for the thread OP!

Will come up in next thread. Kind of forgot most of the time when listing options today, but that's what the write in is for.

Thanks.

I'd personally prefer it if we could sabotage it to nullify the powers those who connected. But honestly, it's probably just Pandora's box.
