Char Sheet : Next Post

You are Whitefang, Leader of Shadows, a nightmare of the woods. The black wolf Schatten is ahead of you, seeking out the serpent Taurini to exact his vengeance on the great beast after it assaults the humans. You can already smell fresh burning flesh. But an image of a pack member lost pulled you aside. You chased after her as best you could, until you were assaulted by a fey beast, your father.

When you recognized one another however, you joyously reunited, and tackled each other to the ground. Alicea tried at first to interrupt but soon gave up as you tumbled with him through the water and snow, sniffing out every wound on each others bodies to learn the tale of each others survival before explaining to one another.

Your father is the first to speak, and surprise stops you dead. “I’m sorry for leaving you.” He stops to glance at two floating balls of light that smell of cold honey, but turns back to you. “It was foolish for me to stay behind in our territory. It is lost to us. I should have followed you out till both of us were safe and you could find your own pack safely. If it wasn’t for me, I think you wouldn’t have taken this sickened path you now tread.”

“It’s fine, we survived. What was that ghost earlier?” you respond as you sit across from him on the river bank.

Your father chuckles a bit as he walks back into the river to look at the glowing lights. “Not a ghost, just an image. Bait for the prey, you. Those are fairies son,” he says, looking at the strange creatures. “They can do much and more with the right incentives. They saved me when I fled from the humans and now they use me as their attack hound. It’s not so bad when you get used to it. Not much worse than hunting a buck and I occasionally would do some good. But,” he says as he turns back to you. “They hate nightmares. We’re anathema to one another. And they want you dead.”

“Why would they want that?”

“Well, you were a rather central role in burning Nadel. I did tell you he was the spirit of the forest, more or less? Didn’t I?” Alicea chimes in.

Your father bares his fangs. “Got yourself a little nightmare bitch? Can’t say I was expecting this as your father. Couldn’t you have aimed for something a bit more, corporeal?”

“She’s fine. She has nice intellectual benefits.”

You can feel Alicea sigh. “I am shacked up with just the smoothest around, aren’t I?”

“And I didn’t kill Nadel, that was the humans.”

“Well you did put out his eye to get the nightmare spark, and you certainly helped in your own destructive way. And what do you think that counts for to fairies?” Alicea says.

“And do you know what nightmares do, son? They lie,” you father growls at you.

“And why are you following these insects? Do you know what fairies do to lost children in the woods? They eat them.”

“Welcome to the woods dear. Everything eats and dies,” your father says as the two fairies fly over behind his back. Obscured by the glow, you can tell that the fairies seem to have the same type of illusory body that Alicea does, except they are free in the air thanks to wings of light, rather than hidden in shadows.

You tilt your head to the side as they float closer to your father’s head. They seem to be saying something to him, but the words jumble and mix in your mind before Alicea’s power sorts them for you. They’re urging your father to kill you.

"Aren't all legends based on a bit of lying? I don't know what Nadel was to you and the fae, but he was mad and broken by some human witch by the time I met him. Putting his eye out was survival; he was looking to feed on my pack, to feed on everything. Now they are both dead, and I would think my hand in it was small. The humans bring destruction with them everywhere they go."

“All legends are based on a bit of lying. As for Nadel however, I don’t know what he meant to you all, but a witch had corrupted him, driven him insane. He sought to consume my pack and I whole. I survived.”

“So you do have a proper pack now,” your father muses before the fairies cut him off.

“Our lady Nadel was a wood nymph who brought growth to the entire region. We will see all who hurt her punished. What are you waiting for Fen?” the fairies shout.

“Back off, he’s still my blood,” you father snaps at them.

“Caecilia was who shifted Nadel’s legend, and she perished in the same fire. The soldiers that burned him are dead or fleeing. So don’t blame us for Cassius’s deed,” Alicea says as she stretches her shadow well over the trees behind you to loom over the fairies.

The balls of light hang in the air for a moment, unable or unwilling to respond. Then they both dart through the air in opposite directions. “They’ll be back. It’s very hard for them to stay in the same place for long if it isn’t a fairy circle. You don’t have to worry about them though, they hold little power over me and I am all of their power. What will you do now?” your father asks.

“Wait, you could come with me. Bring the rest of your pack even. I can find safe territory. Don’t throw your life away like this,” your father pleads as you start walking back to the woods.

“So we can be the plaything of fairies? I can’t imagine that would be a pleasurable fate,” Alicea says.

perhaps we should recall or pack including schatten to see what they think

in fact I think it is prudent we recall schatten. Lay time we saw him he was hunting the serpent.
Also, I am more inclined to listen to our father whatever it is.

i tried to reason him, it's something really important to him, and i'm sure letting him go alone will do nothing good.

>>
>>30780142
Honestly
the whole idea is retarded. Yes Shatten is our companion and we owed him our help but not add much that we should throw our life away.
OP made it MORE than clear that going down this path will mossy likely kill us. Listen to his hints, he is not going to outright tell us that this going to be a bad end.

I wonder if he is the one who made the question I one of the qtgs about how to make it clear to the players that a fight is unwinnable
>>
>>30780309
Or he's trying to build climactic tension for the end of the quest
>>
If we really want to kill the serpent we should grind or levels in true rpg fashion before we go around and do it.
It had been around for more than a century, another year or so wouldn't change much
>>
>>30780309
>implying two giant wolves facing down a dragon isn't the best way to end the quest
>>
>>30780340
yeah no
don't be dense. NPCs are qm's voice. When every single intelligent ally is telling us this is a Bad Idea then it is a bad idea
>>
>>30780353
By how legends work, things receive power by who knows about them and by notable things they've done. Giving Taurini time will only make it harder for us. We might be outright immune to half the things he can do just because we're ignorant of his legends. If we want to kill him, we have to do it now.
>>
>>30780384
You seem to have a low opinion of the writing in the quest. Sometimes it's just characters being characters. They live in a world of what seems to be, not what actually is. Besides, Taurini is probably injured from fighting the humies. Not to mention going down in combat would be a fine way to end this quest.
>>
>>30780370
well, if you are actively looking for MCs death and know what you are getting into then go ahead. As long as you know what you are doing. It's your Rm right to vote for that path.

“This is Schatten’s quest, not my own. Trying to convince me will do nothing. And I am not the kind of wolf who would live well under someone’s heel.”

“Only the Gods live well with the little ambrosia whores,” Alicea adds. “I’m surprised you haven’t figured that out by now after doing their bidding for over a month.”

“Then bring your packbrother back so we can reason with him,” your father says. Behind you, at the river, the fairies have returned, but seem reluctant to follow after you.

You laugh. “We’re wolves. Logic is beyond most of us. We hunt, we eat, we survive, and the odds haven’t gotten us yet so why should then start now?”

“This is a fool’s errand.”

“Not when we know how to kill him. Morning Sun’s First Light,” Alicea explains as you continue on.

“Then you aren’t sealing your own life.”

“No matter what you decide, you should try to bring back your friend Schatten, lest he start the hunt without you,” your father suggests. You nod and exert your power over the surrounding darkness, reaching out and twisting his path around to your own.

“Seems like a good idea,” you say as the black wolf leaps from the shadows, snarling and vicious. He hits the ground hard, sliding through the slush till he comes to a stop and spins on you, teeth bared.

“Oh, I have to translate for him again, don’t I? The angry little boy,” Alicea says before the flames disappear from your eyes and she slides over to Schatten.

“What are you doing here Whitefang? I was upon him! I could be ripping the life from his blood as we speak, and you should be there to help me. The creature is wounded. The humans sliced his wings with arrows and impaled his chest with spears before they were slaughtered. If we let him escape, he will merely heal and come back stronger.”

“I got a bit tied up,” you explain, nodding towards your father.

“Then let’s go,” you say with a grin. Alicea jumps back over to you as the three of you start running through the woods. Schatten quickly takes the lead, tracking through the woods he already traversed with ease.

“The fae are rescinding most of my powers while I’m this far away from them, but I didn’t survive by them alone. I’m still stronger than you. Just, don’t expect to hear from me,” your father says just before the glow in his eyes vanishes.

“Just you and me then, Whitefang. You know you’re likely to die here, don’t you?” Alicea says as the three of you force your way up the foothills. Smoke and sulfur are thick in the air, and you can hear the snapping of tree trunks as Taurini lumbers up the mountainside ahead of you. He has none of the grace and agility he had when he spoke with you, Schatten was right about the injuries.

“That’s pessimistic of you. Besides, Whitefang the Dragon Slayer has a nice ring to it,” you respond.

You can tell that Alicea is smiling. “When you make it out of this, I think I can work a bit of magic with that kind of name. We could go anywhere we wanted. And do anything. We wouldn’t need to be afraid of anything.”

“Taurini wasn’t afraid. And we’re about to kill him. I think it’s good to have a bit of fear,” you say before signaling to Schatten and your father. Schatten splits left while your father splits right. You’re nearly upon the beast now, you can see him stumbling over the ice and rocks. He doesn’t turn, perhaps doesn’t hear you, as you approach.

You leap upon his back, clawing across his thick and bloody scales till you find a soft bit of flesh to bite into. Your fangs sink deep and tear way at his scales as the serpent roars and bellows flames into the sky, but you can tell that the damage is minimal. He twists around and whips his back into a nearby tree, throwing you off but not harming you.

“Opportunistic little vermin. I should have known you’d come for me after sending me into that trap. Or perhaps I should have known that the humans would be growing in power. Bloody fearless apes. They should have broken and fled so I could feast on the corpses of their beasts and brothers. This is your fault little wolf,” Taurini shouts at you as he twists around, fire dripping from his maw.

The serpent is gravely wounded, as Schatten mentioned. He is far from his perfect state. His wings are shredded, blood pours from his belly, he can’t open one of his eyes, and the heat of his flames can barely pierce the cold of winter. But he seems to be healing even as you look at him.

“I take it the humans weren’t in the mood for your legendary riddles?”

“No, they weren’t. You love riddles though, don’t you? How about this one : I am small, blackened, and broken. What am I?” Taurini asks as he chases after you through the trees. He makes a large, slothful snap at you, but you easily dodge around it. You dash between his legs as he tries to pull back to snatch you with his claws, but Schatten and your father leap forth.

As he tries to slice into your back, he exposes himself to your pack. The serpent roars in pain as your father catches hold of his tail, and you bite into the thin scales around his heel tendons. But Schatten yelps as he’s struck and thrown across the small clearing.

You release your hold on Taurini to dash forward. You bark and jump to ensure you keep his attention as he drops back to the ground, spewing fire and flames across the woods, in hopes of turning you blackened and broken. The flames wash down the hills like water.

You are already leaping through the air however. When he pulls back to grab you in his maw, your father and Schatten both rip through the scales of his hind legs. The great serpent wails into the predawn light as he falls down, exposing his neck.

Your fangs pierce through the protection around his neck, gouging into the muscle and blood vessels as your weight tears you down. Taurini roars and tries to shake you loose, giving you nothing to hold on to but your teeth. And you do. With each painful swing of his neck, your fangs dig deeper and deeper till you’re tearing apart his sinewy trachea and spilling the flames of his heart flame across your fur.

Finally, he spreads his wings, shredded as they are, and beats the air till he rises up. He pushes past the treetops with you in tow for a brief moment before the muscles in his wings give out and he crashes back down, striking you against the stones.

Schatten and your father quickly run over to your side as you get back to your feet unsteadily. The beast sighs all of its air out and settles down. Schatten begins running in circles and hopping from side to side. He starts howling into the dawn excitedly, but Taurini isn’t finished yet.

“Rotten wolf. Do you really think this will be enough?” Taurini asks. The serpent is struggling to move his limbs, slowly dragging them through the mud till he can push himself back up, blood pouring from his neck and singing the ground below. “To kill me? I'll devour you to feed my flame. You are naught but a whisper in the winds. I am eternal."

Guys, just want to say. I took the week off to fix some perspective. And you all are pretty damn good players.
>>
So, we happy that we're hunting the dragon now? Since for once luck is on our side? And we're set to live happily ever after with our pack and Alicea our waifu as the dragon slaying wolves?

>Taurini, the Serpent
>probably a God
I thought he would be, when Cailan was all "The Serpent has awoken," because it would balance out--we met a Fae first, Treebark, then a Nightmare, Schatten, leaving only a God missing from the dramatis personae.

But I think you implied otherwise then.
>>30412467
>On the bright side, Nightmare tend to get along with one another, but that’s up to your egos,” Alicea responds.
>>
>>30785298
You have to be a Fae or a Nightmare before you become a God
>>
>>30788134
i have a good feeling about this...
>>
>>30788134
I thought Gods were the 'neutral' third, separate category? >>29273462
>>
>>30788301
Yes, it's just a de facto rule since Gods are stronger than typical Fae or Nightmares, capable of doing Godly things. The stepping stones of getting to God hood are usually being a Fae or a Nightmare so that you can do small things that change reality and let the legend grow. The Shortcut is slaying a God and taking their status. Pretty hard to do.

And of course, how you're seen isn't 1-1 correlated to how you act. Schatten is a nightmare but a pretty cool dude, and Treebark was a fae with little to no personality at all.

Damn you guys know my quest well.

Have to sleep. This ending better be good.

The ending will be this weekend.

I'll try
