Seattle, 2073. Handbasket still in motion.

You are Echo_TRACER, a nova-hot hacker with a dangerous mind and one the fastest ‘links in the Seattle Metro. Life is hard in the 2070’s, and even an elite like yourself has to pay the rent. Hopefully, your latest job will make up for the current deficiency in your cred account. Last time, you introduced yourself to Harriet the boxed-girl, escaped to a coffin hotel to avoid the consequences of your safehouse being compromised, and called on an old coworker to aid in your mission.

You wake with a spasm at the sound of your commlink ringing with an incoming call. It looks like you fell asleep with your earbuds still in. You lazily sync the commlink to your datajack and wait for your vision to properly clear. The caller ID reads Neurophage, and you can’t help but notice that the time is seven in the morning. You had figured that Phage would pull an all-nighter diving through the data havens looking for intel on Harriet, but the least he could do is respect your own schedule. You grudgingly open the call with a thought, and Phage’s absurd icon appears in your display.

“Good morning, Echo.” Phage’s digitally-synthesized voice says. “Sorry to wake you, but I only just finished compiling this data cluster.”

“No problem.” You groan, suppressing a yawn. “Wait, it took you all night to compile data about one girl?” You already don’t like where this is going.

“One girl, indeed.” Neurophage’s bitter laugh, filtered through the digital synthesizer, is extremely unsettling. “You’re lucky that upper-class blonde civilian girls with military cyberware are somewhat scarce in the Seattle area. You were right about the name, by the way. ‘Harriet’ proved fairly useless in the search.” From what little you’ve heard in the field, lying while coming out of sedation isn’t something many people are trained or equipped to do.

“I’ll be happy to scan the dossier myself, Phage, but I’d like a quick rundown if you can.” You’ll need a few minutes to wake up and at least two mugs of soykaf before you’re in the right mind to go over a data cluster, especially one from Neurophage.

“If you insist.” You hear Neurophage sigh. “The info in data havens was mostly made up of redacted police reports, medical files, and hastily-edited news articles. Whoever your girl is, someone went through a lot of effort to make her a ghost.”

“So what you’re saying is that you didn’t find anything?”

>>
>>30738134
“No, what I’m saying is that I found a bunch of redacted police reports, medical files and news articles.” Neurophage insists. “You asked me to get all the information on the girl that I could, and that’s what I did. Making heads or tails of it is your problem.” Neurophage quickly sends the files over an encrypted connection. You thank him and close the call. It’s still too early to be doing real work, but you’ll have a hard time getting back to sleep at this hour. The hotel’s patrons are starting to wake, and the din of activity is already filling the air. If the food stalls are open, you’ll be able to get caffeinated and get to work.

>Wake up Harriet and take her with you. Unless you’re asleep, you want eyes on her at all times.
>Just confirm that she’s alive. It’s not like anything happened to her the last time you left her unattended.
>Let her sleep. Now that there are people around, snatching her unnoticed will be close to impossible.

1. Just wake her.
2. Keep her on hand.

(Low turn-out tonight. If it drops to just one person, I might it call it quits for tonight.)

You open the door to the pod and give yourself a good stretch when you stand up. Before you even get a soykaf, you need to check on Harriet. You cross the short distance between your two pods and give her door a hard knock. A shout of shock and the banging sounds of flailing limbs are enough to tell you that she’s at least still alive. After a moment, the door opens and Harriet emerges, looking none too pleased. Her long hair is messy, her clothes are disheveled, and she has a furious look in her eye.

“Morning.” You say, raising a hand in greeting.

“Good morning, I suppose.” Harriet huffs and crawls out of the pod. “For staying up so late, you certainly are an early-riser.”

“Early birds and worms and all.” You shrug. “I’m gonna get some coffee. You need anything?”

“A shower and a change of clothes.”

“Right.” You sigh. “The showers are downstairs, and I’ll see what I can do about clothes.” Harriet nods and walks with you to the stairwell. Once you’re in line at a soykaf stand, you see Harriet off towards the showers. You could probably leave her unattended for a few minutes without worrying.

“Morning, Ethan.” Jason says, getting in line behind you.

“Jason, right?” you answer quickly.

“You got it. Early morning for you, too? I guess a nomad would be used to conserving daylight, huh?”

“Yeah.” You say automatically. It doesn’t take long for your turn in line. You get your soykaf black, and nearly wretch at the taste. You weren’t exactly spoiled on real coffee, but even the soykaf at home was leagues above this drek. With caffeine in hand, Jason seems eager to talk with you over coffee.

I dont trust this mother fucker. At best hes like that inept sheriff from those moore bond flicks. At worst hes actively trying to distract us from Harriet.

He seems too friendly

You give a laugh and shake your head, a smile masking worry. Dreadnought was supposed to get back to you last night, and you were really hoping to get a chance to check out Neurophage’s data cluster. Rockwell expects you to turn in the “drive” tonight, and even if she doesn’t know that Harriet was in the case you stole, she likely won’t be happy to discover that you looked inside.

“Yeah, sure.” You answer. Anything to appear normal. You and Jason each order a bowl of ramen and take a seat at a table. “So, Jason, what are you up to today?” you ask, blowing on a mouthful of noodles.

“I’ve got a whole backlog of deliveries that need to get done. I don’t expect I’ll be back until nightfall. How about you? Got any plans today?”

“Mostly shopping. I’ve got to talk to a few people, too. I think I’ll be moving on soon.” After tonight, you’ll be rid of Harriet. You’ll wash your hands of this job and go back to normal for a few weeks.

“So quick? You just got here.”

“The time’s about right. I don’t like staying in one place any longer than I have to. Hell, I might even leave tonight.”

“That’s a shame. You seem like an interesting guy. It would’ve been nice to keep you around a little longer.” You’re about to respond, but you’re interrupted by a message appearing on your commlink.

“Need to meet up. Just entering Redmond.
-Dreadnought”

>Dreadnought can wait.
>Dreadnought can wait for you to get Harriet.
>Dreadnought can wait for as long as it takes you to get outside.

You quickly send a message to Dreadnought, telling him to meet by the maintenance entrance to the building. You drink down the last of your soykaf and give a nod to Jason.

“Looks like I gotta get started earlier than expected.” You say.

“No problem. I need to get going myself.” You both get to your feet and exchange a quick handshake. “If you’re still here when I get back, I’ll see you later.”

“Right.” You wave Jason off and make towards the showers. If you’re leaving the building, for any reason, Harriet’s leaving with you. The door to the shower room opens just as you approach. Harriet, a towel draped over her hair, gives you a cross look.

“Did you need something?” she asks.

“Conference outside. Right now.” You jerk your head towards the maintenance exit and, bowl of noodles still in hand, lead Harriet outside. Two people are already waiting for you out there. One is a thin, Hispanic elf with extremely beautiful features. One of his arms is covered in a series of tattoos, the other in a collection of scars. He stares off into space with disinterest, the only indication that he even noticed being that he turn his head sharply when you approached.

The other, naturally, is Dreadnought.

Even for a troll, Dreadnought is huge. Standing at eight feet tall and nearly half as wide at the shoulders, he’s a monolith of muscle and steel. His already huge frame bulges with vat-grown muscle and titanium bone-modification. A series of metal plates, a gift from the Russian military, are visible along his chest from beneath his shirt. Despite his time in military service, his horns are still intact (a fact you know he would boast about, given half the chance).

“You needed to see me?” you ask.

“I still do.” Dreadnought’s accent is still very thick. “I would have gotten back to you last night, but things became very exciting after meeting Quetzal.” The troll gestures towards the Hispanic elf, who briefly focuses his eyes on you.

“Well, let’s hear it, then.” You insist.

“I heard from a man at Aces that your ex-military men have tried hiring Shadowrunners besides you.” Well, that was hardly surprising. Sending one man into a job like this would be insane. “Also, they tried to recruit Fury.”

“Wait, Fury? Like, THAT Fury?” Fury was a go-ganger before she became a Shadowrunner. If you ask her, she still is a go-ganger. She started doing freelance work after her gang got slaughtered by a bunch of Knight-Errant, and you know her to be extremely vicious.

“The very same. Fortunately, I understand it that she turned them down.” Well, that’s certainly a relief. “After meeting with Quetzal, I canvassed the rest of Redmond. THAT, my friend, was when things became complicated.”

“Hey!” Harriet says indignantly, tugging at your sleeve. “Who are these two? I thought you were working alone.”

>Tell her you recruited some extra help for the job.
>Tell her they were the backup you were waiting for.
>Tell her to shut the hell up.

Oh god. I'm sorry guys, but I'm completely exhausted. I really need to call it early tonight. To make up for it, I'll run again this week, probably on Wednesday around the same time. I feel really shitty starting the thread and just abandoning it, but I really don't think I can do this tonight.
