"That t-shirt is against school regulations!" You hear Midoriko Sono screech. You take a bit of your slice of pizza as you look at Miho and smile. Richard's head appears from the driver's hatch of the I-Go, glaring at you as you take another bite of pizza and smile at him with a little wave.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and, while it certain lacked the genuine ingrediants of a good American pizza, Hana had been spot on her appraisel of good pizza. Even if it did have crab on it. Richard raises his arm out of the hatch, curling all but one finger.

Everyone around it is either enjoying pizza or working on their tank- many are managing both. Richard, though, was volunteered to show the Oorai Public Morals Committee the basics of working tank. "That is a rude gesture! It is against regulations!" Midoriko yells as Richard slips back down into the little Japanese tankette. Well, medium tank. God you hope you can find that B1 soon.

Assuming the turbopanther works as advertised it's basically the best all-round tank that qualifies as GuP legal, and by a pretty serious margin.

The gun is good, the armor is good, visibility, optics, and ergonomics are second to none, ground pressure is reasonable, mobility is off the damn chart, plus it's compatible with early infrared optics. Only drawback is fuel economy, which at the scale of these battles isn't a huge issue.

It'd be a better idea to sell one or two of our shittier tanks to get a Panther shell to put it in, if only to prevent Kuromuromine from getting their hands on it and using it against us.

>Unless the rules would let us put it in the Tiger (P) in place of that godawful Maybach, in which case holy shit yes.

Given the hilariously unique drivetrain and power system the Tiger (P) has, that would be a practical impossibility.

Not really, turbines spinning at relatively constant speed are pretty much the easiest things to mate a generator to.

On the other hand, whatever fucked up arrangement of clutches and output shafts the Tiger has to run with two engines is a whole different story.

Basically the turbine either comes with a panther already around it, goes into a panther, or gets sold to someone who has a panther.

You find the Mechanics Club taking a break from their repairs on the Lee- the most badly damaged tank in the hanger. They've absconded with an entire pie and are sitting on the Lee's engine deck chowing down and laughing. With a step on the tracks your pull yourself up. "Well that's where the..." You look at the pizza- it's got some dark-green material.

"Salmon Sushi." Suzuki answers. "Did they not have like... normal pizza?" You shrug- Miho and Hana had done the ordering.

Nakajima finishes a bite before nodding at you. "So, what brings you over here?"

"How's the Tiger?" You ask, pulling yourself into a sitting position and grabbing a piece. Yeah- that's Salmon Sushi. "You guys getting anything done on it?" It had been a few weeks since you'd stumbled upon it down in the bowels of the schoolship- the Auto Club had made a deal- they'd restore it in exchange for it belonging to their club.

Of course they'd still fight for Oorai.

Nakajima smiles. "Want to see it?" She grins over the open pizza box.

This isn't fucking LGA where half the world bends over backwards for us.

>>Basically the turbine either comes with a panther already around it, goes into a panther, or gets someone to buy a panther to install in.
No. Not fixed at all. If it's practically useless to us, it should be soled for something that *is* useful. We would have to sell most of the team to afford a Panther in any working condition.

No, I think everyone's just blown it far out of proportion.

We get an offhand mention of an experimental engine *maybe* being somewhere on the ships books, assuming it hasn't been junked or thrown out, with no indication of where it is, what condition it's in, or whether it even comes with a tank to put it in (highly unlikely).

But since then everyone's gone off on this big hyperactive rush of "oooh we're gettin a soopa panthah now!" when there's fuck-all indication that it's ever going to be practical.

Sure, having a Panther would be great. Having a turbopanther would, for Panzerfähren purposes, only be a marginal improvement, and a potential huge nightmare logistically.

Assuming we even get it, >>30723687 has the right idea.
Since option 1 is a no-go, it'll be 2 to see any benefit. And realistically, a slightly faster Panther is not going to be a particularly greater threat to us than all the other bullshit Black Forest has in the first place.

>>30723763
You're an idiot, since the Tiger (P) is no longer ours to sell. And it would be dumb to get rid of it anyway - it's an extremely powerful tank, reliability aside.

>>
>>30723908
We get all that from a regular Panther, you mouthbreathing moron.

The "Off-the-chart-Mobility" is a non-factor, since the actual Panthers that installed with the Turbine had mechanical limiters in place to restrict it to normal Panther speeds, so that the running gear and drivetrain wouldn't shred itself. The Torque gains because of that were minimal.

And no, we can't disable the limiters, since that would constitute an illegal modification.

>>30723917
We can't sell the Tiger in the first place anymore, so that doesn't fucking matter at all.
>>
>>30723995
St. Gloriana chucked the speed governors in their Matilda tanks, so its totally legal.
>>
>>30724035
AHahaha no.

If you take that as fact you have to ask about what kind of goddamn engine they shoved into the I-Go in the series to make it go that fast.

>>
>>30723389
>>Well, we're probably gonna end up going down there anyway...

I wonder what shape it's in now?
>>
>>30724035
Regardless of whether it's legal or not, the fact remains that without the governors, the moment you try to push it up faster than a normal Panther the drivetrain and Transmission is going to shred itself. Explosively.
>>
>>30723898
Haha
>>
>>30724108
The transmission and drivetrain only sucked so hard because they were made out of late-war desperation steel. Assuming modern repro parts actually made to spec, it should be able to handle the power.
>>
>>30724070
That is a reasonable counter-argument, but since we are not sure what 'Quest Physics' are, given that the I-Go did do some of its initial shenanigans, I think its best to refer this to a higher power. What say you, mighty BlackJack?
>>30724108
I wouldn't say instant transmission failure, depending on the crew. If the auto club's driving it, they might be able to keep it up and running. And what>>30724155 said, so no explosions.
>>
>>30724189
Blackjack is DEEEEEEAAAAAAADDDDD
>>
>>30724155
No, you blithering moron.

They sucked badly made out of bad steel with the conventional engine.

This was not changed when the Turbine was installed.

Even with modern Repro parts, built to-spec, a drivetrain and transmission of that specific design is completely incapable of handling the output of an ungoverned turbine drive.

It's going to lunch itself pretty quickly.

I'm not sure you quite appreciate the amount of stress you put on these older drivetrain designs with these speeds. The forces involved are immense.

The GT-101-equipped Panther produced 1,150 specific horsepower going to the transmission.
This gave it a 27 hp/ton power-to-weight ratio. Practical testing allowed it to reach a speed of 97km/hr, at which point the Final Drive on the new transmission warped itself into a horrific mess. This was after no more than a few hours of practical tests.

Ref: Kay, Antony, German Jet Engine and Gas Turbine Development 1930-1945, Airlife Publishing, 2002

It's a short walk to the nearest entry-point to the underground.

Undership?

Whatever- A few flights of stairs down and you're in a familiar-looking access hallway- one of the larger corridors that leads to a bank of elevators on the other side of the highschool. Tsuchiya turns to you and grins. "Originally we were just gonna haul everything up, one trailer at a time and rebuild it there." She says. "Would've taken way too much effort, though..."

"The cart would haul about a hundred and fifty pounds a trip and it would take roughly three hours to haul and transport back to the garage..." Suzuki continues where Tsuchiya left off. "Four trips a ton times sixty tons..." She looks please with herself. "That's a whole lot of hauling."

Tsuchiya bumps back into the conversation. "So I had the idea... What if we rebuilt it down here? Easier to haul tools down to a staging point here and rebuild it. Then we just drive it up to elevator and over to the garage." The group arrives at a non-descript pair of doors. Suzuki unlocks a combination lock and slides the large door open with the help of Nakajima.

Then someone hits the lights. "Damn... you guys have been busy..." You say with an amazed tone. Most of the chasis and hull is complete- they'd been working on the suspension.

"It's too tall to drive out with the turret, so we'll have to do that seperately." Suzuki says, jumping up onto the hull and sitting. "She's a beauty, though, ain't she?"

This. GUP exchanges historical realism for fun in canon.

Case in point, pic related. Recovered documents from the steelworks where it was designed and made tell the truth about the Maus. Only two were made, and both of them were scuttled in the roads of Eastern Germany. The one in the museum is a Frankenstinian amalgamation of parts from both. It's missing literally every part but its hull, and is covered in holes from test shots.

It is the only Maus left in the world, and it is totally unsuitable for tank combat. And yet we see it in the hands of Black Forest Peak's team, smashing tanks of all nations like the superweapon it was imagined to be. It doesn't even destroy the pavement it's driving on!

So, anon, lighten up a bit and go with the flow. It's a quest about a game, after all. Have fun!
>>
>>30726718
You're still not getting your Turbopanther.

You Turboscrub.
>>
"So... A Porche Tiger..." You say, walking up to the partially-assembled behemoth. "I've never seen one..." You place a hand against it's flank. It's cold and still but you still feel that energy- the potential you felt when you first laid eyes on Black Jack, slowly rusting away in a dilapidated barn on your grandfather's ranch.

Nakajima takes a running start before hopping up to the hull. "Frontal armor's a lot thicker than a production Tiger..." She says. "200mm on the upper glacis and superstructure." She pats the heavy hull. "Better sloping as well." She crawls back towards the engine bay- bowed over because of the low ceiling. "Engine's completely different too- diesel-electric. It'll have two Porche engines that run a generator that gives power to electric engines." She snorts derisively. "It'll produce a hell of a lot more torque than the normal Maybach."

Hoshino gestures to the empty turret ring. "Turret's mounted further forward on the hull too- we won't have to expose as much of the tank to fire around corners." She looks up at the place where the turret would be. "Uses the same turret as a Tiger- mounts the same 88-L/56 too. She'll be the second hardest hitter on the team."

Seriously--I hope they'll be done by at least Pravda.
>>
"How long until it's finished?" You ask, walking around- you've seen it's good side; the left side of the tank's suspension isn't anywhere near complete.

Nakajima sits down on the edge of the hull and shrugs. "Well, figure that we have to keep your tanks up which limits the time we can spend down here..." She sighs and leans back. "Maybe another three weeks until we get the hull and suspension- another two weeks to get the electricals done and then we can bring it up to the garage." She looks down at Hoshino.

"I figure I can get the turret ready and installed with a week or two after that so..." She thinks for a minutes. "Six or Seven weeks?" You hear the number and sigh. Assuming Oorai made it that far, that'd mean missing the next match by far- if you're lucky you could get them in for the quarterfinals.

Nakajima notes your expression. "Russells, we're building a tank from what is essentially scrap and spare parts- pre-formed and matched spare parts, but..." She pauses for a second. "Imagine a Lego set where each piece weighs on average a hundred and fifty pounds and needs to be welded into place?"

"Yeah..." It had taken nearly half a year for your team to get Black Jack ready- though none of you were the type of gearheads that the Auto Team were. "So, have you seen anything else down here?" You say, taking a seat on a stack of unattached armor plating.

She shrugs. "No tanks- but there's all sorts of stuff in these storage sheds- most of it hasn't been touched in years."

>Maybe we could get some people down here to check things out.

Yes, I said I'd wait until Blackjack turns in, but I just remembered that one: It's Daylight Savings Time; and two: It's 3 in the morning and I actually have to do something later today, so consider this me bowing out and saying goodnight.

A few minutes later you're back up outside the garage. Miho's finishing off a piece of pizza- you don't even try to figure out what kind- as you approach. "So- any word from Yukari yet?" You ask with a broad smile.

"Spaghetti Pizza?" She offers- What the... How the? You hold up a hand to politely refuse. "It's got tiny little meatballs on it."

"I'm fine." You say. "Any word from our research team yet?" She's watching the I-Go take short, jolting movements around the quad outside as Richard attempts to teach Moyoko how to drive a clutch. You actually feel bad for the tank as it suddenly pops into reverse and backs into the reinforced wall of the building, shaking a few pounds of dust out of the rafters.

"Nothing yet. How's our Tiger?" She asks, not taking her eyes off the tank as the shaken crew crawls out and checks for damage- probably nothing. "It'll be nice to have another heavy-hitter." She takes a bite of pizza. "Really good stuff- sure you don't want a piece? I think we got too much..."

"So, there's a bunch of storage down there- Auto Club thinks it might be worth taking a look through..." You say, finally accept a piece of Spaghetti Pizza. You take a bite and it's pretty good. "Maybe while Yukari's doing her thing, we could go look through a few of them?"

She nods. "Think Richard will survive?"

You shrug. "He's a strong guy... His odds are good."
>>
OK, guy that can fix it isn't online right now, but I left a message with one of the ops in the suptg irc, so it'll be fixed sooner or later, probably in ~12h, maybe a bit more.

You scan left then right, for just a hint of that bearded man. You peek into the Hangar you last saw him. Just Ashley, Caitlin, and that other girl. Whatever her name is

You check the staging area. Nothing

You increase your pace, you really need to get your shit sorted. The wooden floor creaks as you enter the Slaoon. Again. It still smells of bacon and eggs, but most of the patrons have finished eating and their plates cleared away. You spy John and Rob leaning against the counter where you had been, pigging out on the hash browns

“And you called me fat” you say keeping the air clear of vulgarity by refraining from using 'shit' “where's Rick?” you ask while looking around for his son

As if on cue he pops his head up from behind the counter “he's in his office, talking to Bert about something” he unfolds himself to a standing position “just follow me”

You trot around the counter behind Rick's son, grabbing a hash brown on the way. Your friends give you unsurprised looks as you chow down on the luke warm golden brown deliciousness.

Your tour around the bar is actually pretty impressive. It's not old and musty, rather clean and well maintained even though the cookers are pretty beat

>[1/?]
>>
He knocks on a plain white door at the end of the kitchen, “come in” you hear Rick answer. His son swings the door open revealing Rick leaning over Bert looking at a Laptop “you guys sure you can handle that?”

“You're not too old to get a smack around the head boy” Rick says without looking up, he points to something on the screen while mumbling

“What was your name again?” he asks because he never asked and you didn't see the need to tell

“Adam” you say, he cocks an eyebrow

Rick turns his attention to you “hey there squirt” he grins “what can I do for you”

“Just need those shells” you say hoping to get this done quickly, the match is close now

He wags a finger at you “I got it, follow me son”

You look to his son “you, or was that a euphemism?”

“Both of you”

>[2/?]
>>
>>30735437

You fall in behind Rick with his son keeping instep “how long have you been at the club? I haven't seen you before” he asks

“This is like, the second time we've come here, except for the first time when we dropped off the tank”

“I used tank here” he says “this was years ago, but me and my sisters beat a lot of crews”

You look up at him, even at 6', Rick's son is still a couple inches taller “damn, getting your family time in”

“Yeah” he chuckles “we were good, that Wolverine in the hangar was ours”

“Did you dad make you do it?” you ask, you've exited the Kitchen out the Saloon

Rick cuts in “it was their idea, or Joey's”

“Yeah” his son adds “they dragged me along to shore up the numbers”

The three of you continue walking “what were you, the Loader?”

“Yeah” he chuckles “it was because they wanted the cool spots, and because shells are heavy and the turret was hand cranked”

You join in chuckling “sounds like you got shafted man”

“Nah, it was alright” he flashes his wedding ring “met my wife there”

You jump on it like an emaciated child seeing a Big Mac “what, you married your sister?”

Rick bursts into laughter

>[3/?]
>>
>>30735509

“No dick” he says correcting you “my sister's friend, the three of them put together the idea and then wrangled me”

You find yourself at the Public hangar, the one the club lends out to the Crews. Rather than heading through the main doors, Rick leads you up the side and behind the hangar itself, revealing a concrete slab a couple meters away. Rusted steel double doors are bolted shut in the centre, ropes hang off the handles
“Give us a hand” Rick's son says to you, anticipating the weight of the doors

Rick unbolts. You take one of the ropes. You heave. It's actually a bit of a mission, these doors are heavy as shit

The hinges groan as you swing it open, allowing it to slam on the concrete “WD40, it costs like five bucks”. The doors themselves you note are only rusty on one side, the interior of the door has been burnished

You walk around to Rick as he starts descending. The stairs are rather steep and the only light source is coming from the sun above you

Your descent is greeted by cool dry air washing up towards you

>[4/?]
>>
>>30735668

You're journey downwards lasts a couple minutes. You check your phone and note that you have no bars, looks like you're deep. Ahead Rick flicks on a switch, the darkness is driven away by fluorescent bulbs now illuminating your path
“This tends to be the most dangerous part” Rick's son says standing at the bottom of the stairs “I haven't gotten around to installing a light switch at the top of the stairs”

“What're those for?” you ask noticing plastic buckets perched on wooden boards, strung across the ceiling somehow

“They're filled with water, supposed to stop explosions” Rick says leading you onwards “IF” it's a big 'if' “there's an explosion, the air turbulence before the flames come is supposed to knock the buckets over and the air is supposed to disperse the water over the path of the flames, if we were down here, we'd probably die anyway”

“Makes sense” you shrug “how do you know this?”

“Visited a mine once, and here we are” Rick pulls out another key and removes a very heavy looking padlock from the door, you turn away briefly as he enters a code into a keypad. With a soft beep you can hear disengage and the door opens automatically

“Impressive” you say following Rick in. What's revealed before you is a treasure trove of crates marked with various indications stretching at least 30 feet ahead “this is all ammo?”

>[5/?]
>>
>>30735959

“Yeah, we keep it under pretty heavy lock and key” he stops infront of a crate “can't be too careful with all this ordnance”

“You guys need any belts” Rick's son says holding up an ammo can full of what you assume are .30 cal

You shake your head “I don't think we've ever used the Coaxial” you pause thinking “actually we have used the rounds once, but that was different”

He gives you a sly look. He knows more than he's letting on

The three of you load up a hand pallet truck before making your way out along the hallway you had come through

“Up the stairs” Rick orders

You look at the crates, they were heavy as fuck trying to get them on the hand trolley “do you have like an elevator or something?” you ask hoping to do this easily

“No” Rick responds “besides, it's character building”

“But I don't want to build character” you whine

>[6/6]
