This is a starcraft 1 based quest. I generally try to follow lore and game, but I'm not an encyclopedia and haven't read any of the books. For weaponry and powers I’m not always going to strictly follow canon. This gives me greater freedom to allow character customisation and diversity.>Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/fFXJsf2p>Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Freelance%20Ghost%20Quest>Twitter: @QuestSuperVisorI use D20, best of first three rolls, 1 and 20 are crits and cancel each other out. Skills will adjust DC, not give bonuses, for simplicity's sake. Health is narrative based on the game. The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
>Last time on Freelance Ghost Quest.>You spent most of the day getting used to your newly “optimised” body. You found a tunnel at the back of the temple going down while running around the block, went to talk with Haverdam for a short while, but he was busy with work so you went and meditated a bit more on memories and ghost conditioning. You wake up from your meditation and find that Haverdam and the group is just arriving back at camp. You quietly join them and eat, a sober soup with some bread, and Haverdam joins you.“So, you said you went to the machine last night? I’d have loved being there, but oh well. Tell me all about it!” He sounds like a twelve year old, excited about getting a new toy.“Yeah, I took Murphy and Holmes with me in case anything went wrong, but it didn’t. The whole thing only took a few minutes and was just me hanging in there and glowing, apparently.”“Hmmm, I guess I haven’t really missed that much. Though seeing the machine in action would have been nice.”It seems Murphy overheard you, as suddenly she cheerily bursts out from behind you. “Oh, I recorded it, no worries. I thought you’d appreciate it. And my salary might appreciate you. Nudge nudge wink wink.”Did she… just actually say ‘nudge nudge wink wink’ out loud? You’re not sure if it’s women in general or the ones you encountered here so far, but they seem to generally be incomprehensible to you.Haverdam refocusses on you though. “So, what was it like?”>1. Tell him everything. Murphy is there with you though so she’ll hear a lot more about you than she already knows.>2. Ask to move a bit more privately and tell him everything, ask murphy to leave you for now.>3. Ask to move a bit more privately and refrain from telling him the “awakening” almost going wrong.>4. Write in.
>>30674859>"It healed my... scars... and changed me, somehow. I'm still figuring it out."Tell him more later, perhaps, in private.
"It healed my... scars... and changed me, somehow. I'm still figuring it out."“Oh, and those memories?” Murphy interjects.“I… Yeah, they’re coming back, but it’s taking some time.”“That’s good to hear.” She gives a genuine and warm smile. Suddenly, the medic, Roland, approaches you. “Time for that bandage change, Mr Artemis.” Or right, your arm. Huh, you almost forgot. You actually didn’t put on the sling this morning and you’ve been using it all day without trouble. The mans eyes grow larger the more bandage he removes. Your arm is perfectly fine. Not a scratch. Not even a scar. “What the hell?” He scratches his forearm.“Huh, I see, must be the machine that did that too.” Murphy says. “Hmmm, I reckon I could go in there too, I got me some embarrassing scars that could do with removing.”“Mrs Jones!” Haverdam immediately interrupts. “Ancient forgotten technology is not meant for vanity surgery! Mr Artemis’ case was highly unusual so I permitted it.”“Allright! Allright! I was just kidding.”Roland leaves in a state of bewilderment, muttering under his breath, but you can understand it perfectly. “I’d like some of that technology too then. Could save lives.”Dinner is running at an end, and Murphy is chattering away again as usual until someone in the group calls her away. Had something to do with a bet about carpets and drapes, and Murphy proceeded to get mad and punch the man that said it. Your social understanding hasn’t been improved along with your body and powers it seems.>1. Take Haverdam aside now and tell him about it.>2. Proceed to do some more training (physical, shooting or psychic) in an isolated room.>3. Meditate some more (conditioning or memories). You’ve already done some, so its efficiency would be reduced.>4. Write in.
>>30675160>2I'd like to see our shooting skills now
You excuse yourself and move back to the chamber you trained in earlier. This time, you bring out your firearms. You begin by just working on your reflexes, no bullets used. Quickly switching targets, drawing as fast as you can and aiming. It seems your sight and aim has been vastly improved, but it’s the quick movements where you struggle. It’s nowhere near as bad as the dodging was, but you easily overcompensate and movements that would have been dead on are now thirty degrees too far.You spend the rest of the night practicing, and it’s a good thing you did so before going into actual combat. You feel like your reflexes are back up to par, but you think it can go far beyond that if you keep training. You head back to the camp, and it seems most people are getting ready to go to bed. You join them, not wanting to stay up too late. You’re leaving again early in the morning after all.The night passes by uneventfully. You wake up early to fix your tent a bit more before you go back to the wilderness. The caravan is slowly forming up, and it won’t be long before you leave.>1. Timeskip back to Frontier.>2. Go to Haverdam now, tell him about the device.>3. Write in.
>>30675483Might as well approach Haverdam now.Take the opportunity to ask him if he found something useful too.
>>30675483>2I guess it's time to give a full version, but don't talk about that psionic awakening, might just freack him out
>>30675483>1might be better to tell Haverdam once we get back. We would have more time and would be less likely to be interrupted by anyone...
You approach Haverdam. He seems to have everything ready anyway, and people are still busy loading up the camels. He’s standing a short bit away from everyone overseeing the procedure, making it easier for you to talk to him privately.“So, professor, I think it might be a good opportunity to tell you what happened.”“Ah yes, Mrs Jones was so kind as to show me the recording already. Fascinating. Just fascinating.”You proceed to tell him how you went into the circle, how everything jerked to life and you were pulled into the device. That it was painless this time, and that it seemed to have removed all your mechanical implants. You talk about how it felt as if your body is completely different, and how strange it felt at first to even just move around. You carefully avoid mentioning of the “awakening” or whatever it was that went wrong for a moment, but you do mention that you feel more powerful now, psionically. You have to stop him from taking notes though, as you’d rather not have things about your identity and abilities written down for people to find.By the time you’re finished, the caravan is ready. You move back to your rear position, but the two days pass by entirely uneventful. The first day, you feel a stalker moving past you, but it doesn’t seem to make any attempt to attack or even follow you. It’s not until the second night that anything of note happens.[1/2]
-----You weren’t there when it happened, but you saw the result. Quintus had always acted braver than he was, but it seems he managed to pull the trigger anyway. Afterwards you hear the details from primus who was there. He does his best to make you as uncomfortable as possible with every gruesome detail Quintus suddenly grabbing a gun from one of the lightly armoured guards. Everyone is puzzled, as with the aggression inhibitor he wouldn’t be able to attack anyone.--He didn’t attack anyone though. He put the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Afterwards you realise that he had been silent for the past few weeks. Too silent. Maybe you could have done something?-The next day, you finally arrive at Frontier again. It seems something is going on at the village square, but Haverdam first directs the caravan to his house to unpack. Everyone also receives their payment plus bonus.>You receive 450 credits plus 150 bonus.>You now have 2280 credits>1. Check out what’s happening at the village square.>2. You go to the town’s square, and there seem to be marines there. You quickly duck into a dark corner and carefully watch what’s going on. Your newly improved senses are a great help with this. There are several people in CMC armour making sure people don’t get too close. They’re clearly not from the town itself, as they’re not repainted anddecorated all over, but uniform dark green. The people themselves don’t seem to be too bothered and go on with their daily lives. You can make out the form of a fairly fat man with a twirling moustache standing in the centre, directing men going in and out of the armoury. From what you heard of him, that’d probably be Mr Weissdammer.Only crates go in and out of the building though, it seems he really doesn’t want people to know what’s inside there.>psi points: 6/6>1. Approach Weissdammer (specify what you’d say/talk about)>2. Cloak and check out what’s going on in the armoury.>3. Mindprobe Weissdammer. Try to find out what kind of man he is.>4. Head to Lisa, you might be able to hear more about this from her.>5. Write in.

>>30676127Let's not risk he has detector equipment with him and make a psychic sweep instead.Start with passive detection if there are (other) active psychics in the area and try a shallow, superficial scan afterwards. Do not use too much Force, lest we accidentally someone.
>>30676176That depends how long you'd stay there. It's about a 3-5 minute walk.
>>30676127mind probe some of the marines.
You carefully extend your mind out towards the group. You feel about 12 marines, someone blocked by a psi-screen, probably Weissdammer, a bunch of workers and… Someone strange. He reminds you of yourself, but you can’t really say more without going more in-depth. He’s located right next to Weisdammer himself. You visually check again, but your line of sight is blocked by one of the marines so you move up a bit. It’s a man in a form-fitting black suit, a vague stylistic merge between a ghost suit and a military officer’s uniform. And somewhat reminiscent of a butler too. He follows Weissdammer’s every footstep, but keeps glancing around attentively. You notice a pair of implants protruding slightly from his temples. You decide it’s best to leave him alone for now, but you quickly sweep the minds of the marines. It doesn’t prove too interesting, but you learn that they’ll be here for about a week or so it seems, and they more or less claimed some houses at the western exit to themselves for as long as they’re at Frontier. The marines will be staying here while Weissdammer goes on his hunting trip, and they’ll be overseeing the “supplies” transfers.>1. Go to Lisa, ask her about Weissdammer’s presence and the stalker.>2. Cloak and investigate the armoury while they’re working there.>3. Walk towards Weissdammer and talk to him about something (specify).>4. Write in.

You feel like you’ve gotten everything you can out of this, and head towards Lisa’s lab. It’s the early afternoon so she’ll still be working. When you arrive there you see that the men are busy delivering the dead stalker you took back with you. Lisa’s out with them, but they’re looking at the door, deep in thought.“You know, I might not have thought this through.” You hear Lisa mumble. You approach her, and the moment she sees you, you can feel a bit of excitement spring up in her, but she does her best to contain it, glancing at the people around. Strange.“Hey, Artemis!” She waves at you. “I think I was a bit too excited about getting a dead specimen. Didn’t occur to me it wouldn’t fit through the door. I’ll have to cut it open here. Would you fine gentlemen help me for a moment? I’ll make it worth your time.” She flashes a credit chip for a moment. She heads into the lab and comes back out with a very large sheet of white plastic, folding it out and laying it on the ground. “Right, put it on here.” The men quickly drag the beast onto the sheet.“Right, I’ll have to cut that thing up now. If you gentlemen would like to stay and help me carry the pieces in? I cleared out some tables already, just dump it on there.”“So!” She cheerfully turns her attention towards you as she takes out several cutting and sawing implements and begins working on the stalker. “How’s the trip been?”You can tell she’s eager to tell you some things, but she’s holding back because there’s people around.>1. Oh, you know, killed some stalkers, got tortured by an ancient machine, destroyed the stalker breeding machine, got into another ancient machine. I’ll tell you the details later.>2. “Well, Haverdam had his fun, and stalker attacks should be fewer from now on. I’ll tell you the details later.”“Hmm, you know what, I’ve got a lot of work here to do now. Maybe you could come by around 7 for dinner? Seems we’ve got a lot to talk about.” The men around you smirk.“Sounds like a good idea. By the way, what’s all the commotion at the village square?”“Oh, a few hours after you guys left, Weissdammer sent a message informing us he’d come hunting again. He’s been busy with his hunting cabin since yesterday afternoon, and they’re leaving tomorrow morning on his hunting trip. I expect he’ll be back after a few days. He usually stays another day and then he’s off again. Oh come on, you piece of…”What follows is a vocabulary you hadn’t immediately expected out of her. Murphy? Definitely, but not Lisa. “Need any help with this?”“Nah, I’m fine. Rather do it myself.”You turn away right about when the spectacle is turning rather gruesome. People start watching and others run past hurriedly, a sick look on their faces. Lisa doesn’t seem to care, though one of the men suggests putting up some kind of curtain. You head over to the weapon stall you visited several days ago now, but this time openly. The prices and choices are still the same.>Hunting rifle: 150 credits. Meant for medium to long range, but doesn’t perform worse in closer ranges. Ammo is 5 credits for a single clip of 8 bullets. Can be bought with our without scope.>Revolver: 80 credits. Short to medium range weapon. It has a lot of stopping power but the further the target is the weaker it gets. 6 bullets fit into the chamber at once. 3 credits for 6 bullets. Quick loader included.>submachinegun: 120 credits. Optimal at medium range. Bullets are individually not too powerful, the thing isn’t too accurate but it sprays bullets like no other. clip of 40 bullets costs 10 credits, and lasts about a second of continuous fire. Careful bursts are the key to this weapon.>Semi-auto pistol: 75 credits. Short to medium range. Not as powerful as the revolver, but more reliable. It’s a fairly standard issue commonly found everywhere. 12 bullet clip for 5 credits.>you currently have 2280 credits.>Buy additional firearm? There was some talk about having a spare revolver.>1. Buy revolver (80 credits).>2. Buy something else (specify)>How much extra ammo do you buy for your hunting rifle and revolver?>you still have 2 extra hunting rifle clips and 3 extra sets of bullets for your revolver.

>>30677730I... honestly didn't really set a limit. I'll say 6 extra sets before it gets a bit bulky.
>>30677700Somehow I doubt he'll just let us tag along with his secretive little band.Does the settlement have some sort of social hub? >>306777726 extra sets each of course. So general consensus seems to be the extra revolver and a varying number of extra sets of ammo between 1-3.I think it's more or less ok for everyone if you buy ammo so you have 5 extra sets for each weapon.
>>30677832We should have one clip in the weapon, and two to three additional clips for each weapon on our bodies. Do we have a backpack, putpack, webbing, thigh holster, or other way to carry all this gear. Does our ghost uniform have pockets.
>>30677841He does. They're mostly for baggage and heavy lifting though, you're not sure how he'd react to another hunter joining in.
>>30677897You've got several belts and pouches where you can store ammo. You do have a backpack but that's fairly bulky and you left it at home during the expedition.
>>30677813It just sounded funny, maybe catch up with murphy and ask her about any social conventions regarding dinner with a lady? then again he probably has no clue of any social conventions>>30677642I'm sticking with the extra revolver but with 5 extra sets each

“Well hullo there good sir. Artemis was it, right? Seen you around, heard some stuff. So, a hunter eh?”It seems the man is more than happy to sell you things, and you quickly buy an extra revolver, 3 clips for your hunting rifle and 2 for your revolver. He pretends like the prices he’s offering you are a special discount for a connaisseur like you. As if.>You spend a total of 101 credits>You now have 2179 credits.“Always a pleasure doing business with a fine gentleman like you, sir!”>You still have a bit more than an hour or so before Lisa expects you.>1. You quickly check around. You’re not too big on social conventions, but you believe that if a woman invites you for dinner, you’re supposed to bring her something of a gift. Flowers or something. You look around the stalls, but it doesn’t seem like anyone is selling any there. You look around a bit more until on the very edge of the market you finally find a stall selling plants. There seem to be only potted ones, though you see one person buying one which the lady behind the stall cuts off for him. You’re not too sure which is more appropriate though. A cut flower would wither and die fairly quickly, but a potted plant would be a gift with much more longevity.>1. Potted flower.>2. >>30678666And of course I forgot to add, the spaceport was then built on the edge of the lake because by then there were other villages and it was a fairly central position (but you haven't been told that last bit IC).
You proceed to buy the potted flower, and carry it around under your arm for the moment.>You now have 2174 creditsYou realise you have no idea where murphy lives, but some quick mind scans later reveals the location of her and her husband’s house. Turns out she’s married, huh. You remember Haverdam calling her Mrs Jones now, right. You approach the door and politely knock. You hear a lot of scuffling inside and it takes about a minute or so before a man opens the door very slightly, peering out. You can see his hair is a mess, and he doesn’t seem to be wearing a shirt.“Eh, yes? Who is it?”“It’s Artemis, is Murphy there?”“Uhh…”“Yeah, I’m here.” The man disappears, and the door is opened slightly wider. Murphy’s wearing a tank top, shorts, and her hair is out of usual pony-tail.“What’s the matter Artemis?” She gives a strange look to the potted flower you’re carrying under your arm.>1. “I was invited to have dinner with the doctor, I was wondering if you had any tips. It’s… not really what I usually do.”She just bursts out in laughter. You wait for a while, a bit puzzled at her reaction and becoming increasingly aware of the stares you’re getting from people on the street. Just as it looks like Murphy’s about to recover, she bursts out again. It takes a few minutes before she can actually reply. “Oh boy. Sorry about that. It’s just… A potted plant? Really?”“Why not?”“Do you even know what plant it is?”“…Now that you mention it I forgot to ask. It was the best looking one though.”She has trouble keeping herself from laughing again, but manages. “It’s a tomato plant.”“Oh. By the way, I wasn’t interrupting anything, was I?”“Eeeeh… Have you ever done anything like this before? I mean, a date?” Seems like she’s evading that question. You shake your head.[1/2]
>>30679249“Thank goodness, would have taken pity on the poor girl if you had. So now, what you want to do is ditch that plant, buy her some proper flowers, and take a shower. Best dress a bit better too.” Suddenly her head jerks to the side, looking behind her and she mutters “Oh behave for a second will you?” before she turns back to you. You take the opportunity to defend your choice.“But if it’s potted it’ll stay alive. Cut flowers will just wither and die in a few days.”“If you say so, lover boy.” She rolls her eyes. ”So yeah, for the rest, I dunno, be yourself? She asked you so she must already like you.”“Thanks Murphy. By the way, I’ve got a wraith sitting at the spaceport and I was thinking about making some customisations.”Her amused look changes to a mixture of glee and surprise. “A wraith? An actual, military grade operational wraith? What series? No wait. You know what, come by tomorrow, say… 10 o’clock in the morning, and we’ll talk shop. Good luck with your date now, bye!”The door shuts again and you hear some giggling coming from behind the door as you start walking away.>1. Take a shower.>2. You head back home and drop off the tomato plant. You’ll find something else for her then. The marketplace is still busy when you get there, and first, you find some casual but slightly fancy clothing. Shirt, decent trousers, shoes and all that. It’ll be weird going out without your suit. The flower lady is smiling when she sells you a small bouquet of flowers this time. You’re not sure whether it’s because you’re buying or because she realised the mistake you made earlier.>The slightly fancy clothes etc. cost 100 credits. flowers 5.>You now have 2069 creditsYou go to the biodome next and take a quick shower. Afterwards you change into your new clothes. It feels strange. It’s not form-fitting, you’re lacking your mask for viewing different visual spectrums, and you can’t even cloak. They’re also horrible if you were to fight while wearing them. All your ghost instincts are screaming at you to tear them apart and wear your suit, but you silence them.A short stop back home to drop off your suit, and you head towards Lisa’s house. You politely knock, and it opens less than a second later.“Hello Art…” She falls silent halfway your name. You figure it’s a good place to offer her the flowers.“I uh. It’s… Thanks.” She goes red as a tomato, but accepts the flowers and invites you in. She’s wearing fairly casual clothes. A skirt and a shirt. Nothing too fancy, but probably not something she’d wear every day. The table is ready, and she invites you to sit down as she takes a glass and puts the flowers in, and gets the food from the small kitchen corner. It’s some kind of meat, a bunch of vegetables you barely know, potato… something and a very good sauce. Your culinary knowledge is close to zero so you can barely identify anything, but it tastes very good.>Choices in next post
>>30679432The latter, clearly. The tomato is clearly the superior gift here.

“This is really delicious.” You say, which causes her to blush again. “So, how are you doing with that stalker?”“It… I can talk with it.” Now that wasn’t what you expected.“It… Sent me things in my mind, like you did. The things are psychic! And, I could reply! It was the day after you left, I was slowly getting it conscious, but still drugged, and it sent me these messages, feelings. It took me a while to understand, but I found that I could reply! Mittens and I got fairly close. She’s off drugs now for the most part, and she’s fairly docile. Well, she I say. Turns out, stalkers don’t have a gender. No idea how they reproduce seeing how they simply lack reproductive organs as far as I can tell.”“I think I can shed some light on that.” You tell her about the chamber you found and how you destroyed it except for that one canister. “I’m actually not sure what happened with it, but I imagine Haverdam took it back with him.”“That’s… actually kind of sad, now that I know Mittens. I guess it was necessary though. I hope at least the attacks will stop now.”>1. Ask her what her plans are with “mittens”, and whether she learned anything else important.>2. Tell her about the machines and what they did to you.>3. write in.
>>30679946>"Mittens?">tell her about the machines
>>30679946>2. Tell her about the machines and what they did to you.then ask about Mittens afterwards and maybe tell her that she has always had psionics
>>30679946Explain that her ability to talk with Mittens is proof of latent psychic abilities, and that we can help train her in that, if she'd like. The ability to hide her talents would probably be best, because we noticed a possible psychic with the Mayor here, and we don't want her to become a target.>1Ask if we could talk with Mittens. Also say that we felt another stalker out there, so there still are quite a few out there, and that there may be more places where they can 'grow' out there.
>>30680083I wonder if we should tell her of the option to visit the temple for free upgrades...
>>30680115I don't think she needs them...
>>30680083Slight correction. Weissdammer is the owner, he's not the mayor. There is a mayor but there's never really been any need to go see him.
>>30680125Ah. Still, suggesting the same thing. She needs to know and she'll be in danger if Primus comes with her untrained.
>>30680123Well, that would be up to her to decide, wouldn't it?
>>30680174will we be able to say everything because its all kind of important
>>30680125She's also probably already met Weisdammer and so her psionic potential might already be known to him.
>>30680203so long as she knows how painful the first part is...
>>30680223Hopefully we can figure out a way to make it not painful. If we can communicate with the stalkers, we might be able to access their systems.
“Mittens?”“I know she doesn’t have the actual paw colouring, but… Look, it’s a cat thing.” She falls silent.“You know, not everyone would have been able to reply.”“I… Feared something like that, yeah.” She pauses for a moment, a look of uncertainty on her face. “Am I… A psychic?”“Yeah. I’ve known since we met, but I figured it might have been a bit too much to spring on you at the time. I guess this is pretty much the best way it could have gone when it comes to that.”There’s a small pause, but you continue. “You should be trained though. At least in self defence. There’s a psychic with Weissdammer, and people with the gift always get targeted. It’d probably be best if I taught you how to keep your mind closed. That’d go a long way already since you’re not inherently powerful enough to be spotted. You’re lucky with that actually. A bit more powerful and you’d be interesting to people to… obtain.”She looks uncertain. A bit of fear of the unknown drifts off of her. “Right now I can even feel how you’re feeling without even trying. You’re unconsciously broadcasting your thoughts and feelings. Any psychic looking for another one would have a field day with that.”“Ok.” She sighs. “I don’t have much of a choice, do I?” She looks you straight in the eyes. “Thank you. For doing this for me.”“And there’s still other stalkers out there.” You think it might be best to switch topics now. “I felt one when we got back. There might be more places where they’re making them. I believe Haverdam mentioned a larger temple complex much further away.”“Yeah, he did.”“And, excuse me for asking, but could I talk to Mittens? I mean, not necessarily now, tomorrow or something.”“Yeah, I’ll introduce you tomorrow. It’s not actual talking she does. She sends images. Feelings. Things like that.”>options in next post.
>>30680429>1. Tell her about the machines and what happened to you.>2. Write in.>Note: the temple has its own purpose with the ‘optimisation of specimens’ thing.>Note: Psi ratings any higher than hers are sought after for a multitude of reasons. “There was also something else in that temple. Well, two things to be exact. One thing scanned me, it was… Horribly painful. But it also removed my mind wipes. I’ve been remembering my past a lot faster now, and I think I remember most of it now. But the other machine… Well, it changed me.”“Is that why your scars are gone?” You rub your face where your scars used to be.“Yeah, though I hadn’t entirely realised myself yet. It healed up my arm too, it got hurt badly during the fight in the breeding room. But it’s a lot more thorough. I’m much faster, stronger, I can see, hear, smell better. I hardly ever grow tired and basically only sleep because it’s something I’m used to. I’m still getting used to it all.”“Hmmm…” And now she’s looking at you like she was looking at that stalker corpse earlier. “I could examine you, check what exactly happened on a deeper level and so.”“That could be a good idea. But it’s more than just physical. My psionics grew a lot more powerful. For a moment, I could feel everything in all the systems around. It was… scary.”The meal’s finished now, and Lisa’s starting to collect the plates in silence. You both have a lot to think about now.>Anything you’d like to say before you leave? I’ll take all votes now into account for the opening post of next thread.>Next thread should be at 8pm CET saturday, but I’ll be at my dad’s place and he’s got the place set up to have internet shut off at about 12:20, so it’ll be a bit shorter.
