>Always back down
There is heat now. Heat and dark. And wet. You strain to open your eyes. You see dark, with flecks of silver light all around. Stars, perhaps. You turn your head, at great personal pain, and see two shadows communing near an orange glow. This is all you can manage before the dark claims you again.

You regain power. You open your eyes to see bright blue with white strokes that float across the field slowly, shifting and splitting. You try to move, but very little of your body checks in. Something wiggles under your head, lifting it up. It hurts to move. Something is pressed to your lips and then a cold sensation fills your mouth, forcing its way down your throat. You swallow, coughing slightly, and then are laid back down. The darkness comes again.

Finally, you can hear truly. Your body is still weak, but your mind is aware and able to process the world to a decent degree. Voices in the distance speak nonchalantly about things you can't understand. You try to move, and your right arm responds, nearly lifting you onto your side before losing strength and collapsing. Noise, like shouting, and little patches of warmth pressing on you, forcing you back to resting position. This time you can fight the dark. You can just get out a few words with your parched throat, and hopefully you can understand the response.

There are more noises, this time almost coherent. A warm spot on your cheek relieves our worry, and you are able to relax. After a few moments, you are brought water and helped to sit up straight with the aid of a moss covered rock. The world is still blurry, but things are beginning to focus. You are distantly aware of your companions, and in between short periods where all is black and quiet, you are given water to drink and sometimes someone places a warm hand on your head, which is quite relaxing.

Soon, things become clearer, and you are able to rationalize the world around you. It's on a bright morning, and you look over to see Pearl tending a campfire, still in only your shirt but now with her red hair tied in a long, clumsy braid. You try to speak up, but your throat is dry. Next to you is a small bowl of water. It looks very appealing right now. You try to lift it, but your left arm is a bit shaky.

The small sip you did get is quite refreshing, but leaves you wanting more. you sigh, and eventually Pearl looks over to see that you're awake. She approaches with a smile, holding a still glowing stick from the fire.

"We were stuck down there for a long time. I tried to warm you up, but you're much bigger than me. Eventually Riley came looking for us and I managed to call out to him. He brought the mako down and found us. He actually figured out that with the gem we found, the mako became more powerful. We rode it up the waterfall, carrying you. We found a nice warm spot on the beach, since we could climb with you as deadweight, and we've been taking care of you. I'm alright, I don't mind the cold at all. Riley has been really tired though. He has to find food every day, and he lets me stay and watch you while he gets water from my lagoon to help you. He'll probably be back before dark."

You close your eyes and think. The lagoon water they've been giving to you a little at a time for days must be the reason you didn't die. You'll have to thank Riley later. For now, there's something you should do.

You awake some time later, as the sun is readying itself to set. Riley is descending a cliff in the distance, and Pearl watches him do so. As he approaches the camp, you notice his stubble coming in. It hadn't occurred to you, but yours is doing the same. You watch as Riley approaches, and soon he notices you looking. He grins, and holds up a small handbasket, likely full of mermaid eggs. He also carries something on his back, but it's not clear what it is from here. He stops to lay the goods down by Pearl, then approaches you, taking a knee in the sand beside you.

You take the fruit in hand and begin biting into it. The soft flesh is a boon, since you doubt you've have the strength to chew something very hard right now. You drink the lagoon water as you eat. Already you can feel your stamina returning, but you wager you'll need a few more pints of this stuff before you're up to climbing the cliff. After filling up, you watch as Pearl and Riley eat their own dinner, and then the two of them come over to sit by you. Pearl pulls out a bundle of dry grass and begins toying with it, while Riley talks.

"So Pearl told me you lost the raptor trying to explore that cave. I wish you'd have waited, but who am I kidding. I would have done the same thing. Actually, I think I might have good news. While I was exploring my part of the island, I found another beach with stone idols. I haven't looked at them much, but if we're lucky there might be another usable one. When you're better we'll go check it out."

Pearl giggles, and you look over to see what she's on about. She holds something behind her back and smiles.

You tell Donna all about your short time on the ship, and about meeting Donna. Pearl seems quite intrigued by the story. You turn to Riley and ask about his concern for her.

"It's not as though I'm worried about her dying, really. I'm just sort of curious. The two of us ended up her, so she must have landed nearby too. But if she's not on the island, she either got eaten by something or someone scooped her out of the drink."

You agree that looking for her nearby would be best. With that, the three of you pass the night in peace. You spend the next few days drinking plenty of water and eating fish and fruit. You and Riley have really begun to reek, and yet Pearl remains pristine and polished. Perhaps it's due to her magic, or perhaps she's simply better at caring for herself than the two of you.

On the tenth day, you are back to full strength. To commemorate your recovery, Riley plans for the two of you to have a proper bath in the lagoon. He even manages to find soapstone, a rare rock used by sailor to scrub away the smell of the sea when they arrive at port. As the both of you ready for the trip, Pearl asks if she'd be permitted to come. Riley looks a bit nervous at the idea.

Pearl sets all of your clothes to dry on her rock before diving in with you. Riley silently scrubs himself with his stone, trying to focus on the surface of the water. Pearl doesn't seem to understand hers, and ends up dropping it. You scrub down, taking extra care to get the parts of you that haven't seen sun in a while, to make sure shadowsores don't begin to form. You have a bit of trouble reaching your back, an important spot. You figure you can just work at it yourself, or you can have fun with Riley's disposition.

Pearl swims over and begins grating your back with the soapstone. In truth, it's sort of relaxing for your back muscles. She does a thorough job and at the end you feel as clean and shiny as a coin fresh from the mint. You dry off in the sun with Pearl, while Riley sits on the other side of the rock, cutting his hair with a jagged stone. Pearl seems quite at ease in the warm summer sun, and you can see why. It's quite soothing to feel the sun on your bare skin. The two of you spend a while flipping and taking the sun before Riley calls up to you, asking if you're ready to go yet. "I've been looking at the sky for a while now. There are birds, but not ones from this island. That means they're migrating. I think if we ride this way," he points north east, "we should reach land. The three of you climb awkwardly onto the mako. Riley asks to drive, but you take the head anyway, being the biggest and most likely to fall off. You instead sandwich Riley between you and Pearl. He's uncomfortable, but you all are, and you set out.

You arrive at the beach in just over half an hour. It's nearly the complete opposite end of the island. Pearl dismounts and hops onto the water, then begins swimming to shore. Indeed you see a crumbling row of idols, all in varying shape and size. Riley produces the blue gem from the cavern beneath the island, and asks who should look.

You jump off into the water and swim to shore, leaving Riley behind on the mako. On the way, you tell him to search around for anything else whilst you try to find a serviceable idol. Riley speeds off and you begin examining the stone idols with Pearl.

Together you search two at a time, shoving the blue gem into the head of any idol that looks like it might achieve liftoff. You go through more sharks, birds, and a turtle before you finally find one that floats. It's a bit more cracked than the mako, but it does hover and goes just as fast. It's in the shape of a sleek fish, with ornate stripes along the body. Pearl is the one to find it, and stick the gem in as its power source. She is eager to test it out.

As she speeds around the water, you can't help but feel like a parent sitting by as their child rapidly moves toward skinning their knee. "Honestly? I just want to shave and have some red meat. After that I'll get piss drunk and probably pay some fine lady to polish my pistol while I clean my guns." You can't help but smile, if only at his upswing in cheerfulness. You call Pearl in and have her scoot back so that you can pilot the new idol, which Pearl has already dubbed the guppy. With this, you head back to camp collect some fruit for the road, and head out, riding northeast, toward the still rising sun.

It's growing dark when you spot another island in the distance. This one is much smaller than the one you came from, and you could likely walk the entire length of it in less than an hour. Riley suggests you move on, and try to find somewhere better suited as shelter, but you don't think you have many hours of sunlight left.

In the middle of the night, you wake to the sensation of a full bladder. Unable to fight your primal nature, you rise and move to find a stone to evacuate behind. Along the way, you think you see Pearl move in her bed. You glance over and see her curled up unusually. I'm going to try and sleep, I know we have a big day." She wraps her arms around you and squeezes tight before curling back up in her bed. You stand and dust off your knees before finding a spot to loose the golden tides before heading back to bed.

The next few days are island hopping. It seems like you landed in an archipelago by how many small chunks of land you come across. Not many of them contain anything interesting, at least until the seventh day when you come across another larger island. You approach from the east, spotting several gulls cavorting on the sand. With Pearl's help, you go about building a net from materials on hand. It's not terribly durable, but it should work to slow your prey as you deliver the final blow. Pearl watches you stalk and finally toss the net over the boar. When it tangles itself in panic, you fall on it with a rock and cave its head in. Pearl seems shocked at the violence you have committed.

Pearl seems to understand your meaning, but still contemplates it as you head back to Riley with the boar in tow. When you arrive, he is quite excited to see it, and the two of you work meticulously to skin it.With a good bit of wood and some real dedication, you manage to roast the whole thing, aware that you'll never finish it all tonight. Despite her earlier qualms, Pearl seems delighted to try the meat. She smiles and holds her cheeks, giggling at the flavor. Riley eats more than you'd have assumed he could, devouring it in chunks which he tears off savagely.

That night you all sleep with full bellies, and Pearl especially seems content. She lifts her shirt to rub her stomach as she reclines, making after dinner talk a bit awkward.

The next three days are more of the same, hopping from island to island and living off the fruit of the land. Then, there is a day of naught but open sea. The three of you grow hungry and tired, but you must press on, for falling asleep in the middle of open water is signing over your life to the seafloor. The final day however, proves a glorious one, as on the horizon Riley spots a port town. It sits cozy on a large island covered in sugar and tobacco fields. Though it is a bit old timey, they will no doubt have facilities and services of the modern era. You are eager to land, but Riley suggests bringing the idols ashore elsewhere and walking to town, to avoid suspicion.

You bring the idols up to a shore overgrown with weeds and rock. Nobody would be likely to come here for recreation, and even if they did they wouldn't be likely to tell the idols from the rest of the rocks unless they were looking. For extra safety, you and Riley remove the gems which power the idols and pocket them. You look toward the town, about four miles away. At a steady pace you'll be there in about an hour. Riley brings up Pearl's disposition as well as yours. Two gruff men in matching coats with guns and a girl half dressed in a stretched undershirt are sure to catch a few glances. Riley suggests hiding Pearl while one of you gathers some things in town, but Pearl is nearly wetting herself in excitement to see the town proper.

You leave Riley to watch over Pearl while you go into town to gather what you need. He is unhappy about having to wait, but you ignore his moans. Leaving them in the woods to wait, you arrive in the town to see many people moving here and there in the summer sun. Everyone here is colored a deep brown from the light, and they all seem cheerful to go about their day. You think the field workers may not be as content, but that's not your concern right now. You near a clothing store, but realize you haven't a coin on you. You weren't payed before you left town on this job, and you don't think Riley will have anything either.

You look around to examine the possibilities. There are a couple of drunks behind some boxes who might drop a few coins if you shake them enough, but doing so might get you a reputation quickly. Still, you are traveling with a gangster, and if you're very lucky you can be out of here by tomorrow morning.

You move through the town and find the area that seems to be where most folk live. Everyone is working now, and save for a few children and perhaps dogs, the houses are unguarded. High above, on a pulley between two houses are a pair of clotheslines. You think you can climb up to them if you're careful, and fetch an outfit for Pearl. After that, you can don your own shirt if you like.

You tear down a plain sundress as well as some undies that seem likely to fit her. She'll have to go without shoes for a while longer. You hop back down to the ground, and run into a small boy playing with a stick. He stares at you in confusion, but you don't give him time to propose any questions before you fold the clothes up and stuff them into your jacket, then zip it up and go on your way.

You get back to Riley and Pearl in a little under an hour after you departed. You unzip your coat and hold out the clothes to Pearl. She takes them happily and slips out of your shirt, prompting Riley to look away. You have to help her into the undies, since she doesn't seem to quite comprehend leg holes, and then she is able to don the dress herself. It's a bit loose, but it'll do. You remove your jacket and put your shirt back on, finally. It's a bit stretched, but it's good to keep your coat from chaffing. With all that finally sorted, you're ready to head into town. You've still no money, and the three of you need food, drink, and a bed for tonight. You have a lot of trouble talking Pearl into sleeping outside again.

"But I'll get my dress dirty! It's so clean and soft! You two can make them let us sleep here, can't you?"

The three of you wander until you find a clean looking tavern. Pearl looks at the place in awe. Riley not so much. You enter together and sit at a table. A few looks come your way. It's clear the three of you aren't natives. What's more suspicious is the rifle strapped to your thigh. It's lucky Riley conceals his, or people might think you're here to start trouble.

When a waitress comes around, you order three meals and a pitcher for the table. She smiles as she notes your orders, and scurries off to the kitchen. Riley then leans in and whispers.

"We don't have a coin between us. So any way we do this is going to be scummy. I can handle it if you like, this sort of thing is my specialty."

You eat and drink, watching as Pearl obsesses over every morsel of the meal. She goes so far as to order dessert, compounding the guilt you're about to feel.

Eventually the waitress comes over with a check, which Riley takes and browses for a moment before asking to see the owner. She looks nervously over to you and Pearl, but you keep your face blank. She shuffles back to the kitchen and eventually the door swings open, revealing a large man with tree trunks for arms and a scowl that could spoil milk. He strides over to the table and slams his meaty palm down, asking Riley what his complaint it, spitting in his face. Riley's expression reverts to his trademark grin as he wipes away the spittle. He glances down to you for a brief moment.

Riley reaches into his coat and produces one of his pistols, shoving it under the owner's chin. His look changes from rude to shocked in a split second. Riley then stands and slips the owner into an arm bar, slamming his head down on the table in one smooth motion. Pearl is surprised. Riley pulls back the hammer on his pistol before speaking.

"If you expect three self respecting people to pay for the shit you serve here, you've got another thing coming. Now get your fat ass back in the kitchen and don't let me see you in town again while I'm here, do you understand me?"

The owner nods, and Riley throws him to the ground. One of the patrons tries to get up to help him, but Riley cuts him off with the second pistol. The kind man sits back down, and Riley motions for you and Pearl to get up. The three of you walk out, leaving a silent and stunned room behind.

You head toward an inn for the night, after all the commotion. Pearl seems dazzled by Riley's performance, holding up an entire bar with two empty pistols. You don't know if you could have done the same yourself. You reach the inn and Riley goes to enter, hands ready to draw.

He looks at you and smiles, asking you how he can help you.

"I'm sorry to hear that," The old man stand up out of his chair and moves toward the edge of the desk. "It truly pains me to see kind people crushed under poverty." He rings a small bell three times, and falls silent. You sit in confusion for a moment, and then the door behind the desk swings open. Two large, dark men with machetes emerge from the back, and grab you and Riley. They wrestle each of you into a headlock, and drag you out the front door. You are tossed haphazardly into the street, landing on your shoulder. Riley lands beside you, and Pearl follows you out, kneeling down to check on you. You are without a place to sleep, which seems to irritate both your companions. Riley is still in favor of doing things his way, but you protest enough that he gives up the fight. The two of you make your way back to the stone idols. You lay out the moss beds and curl up together, back to back for warmth. The sun sets on you, and you make a vow to sleep better tomorrow.

That night, there is no sign of Riley. You wake after midnight to Pearl pressed up against you, with a light stain of tears on your shirt. You don't have the courage to wake her, but you do throw your coat over her for added warmth before falling back asleep.
