Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. Previously, you tricked an ancient Rhynian AI into believing you have been assigned to command this ruined facility. You were escorted to the Commander's Quarters and took the time to refresh yourself and meditate.

You exit the bath to see that a strange construct has knocked over the desk. It is large, perhaps the size of a guar, and made of twisted metal. Its feet are long blades, which are currently folded up into its arms. Its head is a smooth pyramid lacking any sort of distinguishing features. It looks as you'd imagine a thousand year old construct would, whatever cloth covering it once had has long since decayed or fallen off. One of the blades is bent at a sharp angle, and you doubt it can still properly function. You note fire damage around its 'head', if you can really call it that.

Of course, it's still functional enough to kill you. It was certainly more than capable of forcing the door open, judging from the large dent in the center and the gouges in the metal. The desk that once sat against the wall next to the treasury door is smashed entirely to pieces, presumably from the strange construct stumbling into the room. Since you entered the room it has turned its attention to you, head lowered and blade folding forward as it crouches low, as if preparing to pounce.

Chryssa is nowhere in sight, but Profectus is lying on the couch staring at the construct with wide eyes. He doesn't seem to want to attract its attention, and as such is playing dead. Hopefully if you can just distract it for long enough he could help you destroy it.

>You have the initiative!
>Unfortunately, you are unarmored and your only weapons are magic and a small knife.
>Your spear and Centurion Armor are leaned against the bathroom wall, only ten or so feet away.

>Jump into the bath, hope it follows you. It will be easy to incapacitate it in water.
>Retreat into the bathroom and shut the door. Quickly armor yourself and grab your spear.
>Try to determine if it has any obvious weaknesses. Damaged as it is, surely something is exposed.

Rolled 1

You take a few steps back, and as the construct leaps you slam the door closed. Its head thuds forcefully against the door, the wood giving easily under the thing's weight. You're almost knocked to the ground but manage to pull yourself up and scrabble your way to the bench where your armor is sitting, back already split open and ready for you to pull on.

You shove your arms through the mail and plate sleeves and the armor quickly snaps itself shut around your torso. You've only just gotten the heavy metal boots and greaves pulled onto your legs when the construct finally forces the door off its hinges and once more leaps towards you. You make a lunge to grab your spear, but you can tell you're not going to be fast enough to get out of the way before the construct crashes into you. You channel vys into your legs to turn the lunge into a leap, ending with you tucking into a roll with spear in hand and popping up at the opposite end of the bathroom.

The construct crashes into the tile, smashing apart a marble bench as it lands and cracking the ornate mosaic floor. It whips around to face you with surprising agility for something so severely damaged, and once more its legs tense to leap at you. Fortunately, you've got quite the advantage in this environment. The air is thick with steam and the bath next to you provides a ready source of water.

As it leaps at you, you prepare to counter...
>Jump out of the way!
>Prepare to catch it on your spear!

You raise your towards the construct as it sails through the air towards you and channel vys towards your palms. You feel your hands grow numb, and frost gather in the air in front of you. With a pulse of magic a wall of ice forms in front of you and more accumulates around the construct's limbs, and then water from the bath rises to reinforce it.
>Vys Pool: (9/14)

The construct hits your wall with a heavy thud, and the ice cracks but doesn't give. You dismiss the wall with a wave of your hand and the water you used to make it splashes to the floor before flowing back into the bath. The construct sits before you, joints frozen solid and head twitching frantically as it tries to free itself. You see a few fractures spiderwebing their way across the ice at its joints but it will hold for a while yet.

The construct is down, but not out.
>Push it into the bath, freeze it solid. Deal with it later. (1 Vys)

I'm runnin' low on accompanying art lately. Been scouring the web but it's hard hard to find art that fits the theme I'm going for.

Yeah, you did. You learned Novice rank fire magic to get from 10 to 11, then finished the priest's journal to get from 11 to 12, and the ranged bumped you from 12 to 14.

>>30655680
That's a good summation of it. Other themes will get mixed in as you proceed further afield. For instance, I have a ton of art for Elaudia and Aleamond.

The A.I. might be able to reprogram it. But there's probably no way to ever repair it.
>>
>>30655695
But we've never been in a situation wear we'd use it yet.

Not saying it won't be usefull, but it seems like it'd only really be useful on human enemies that we don't want to be close to and are low on Vys. And we'd need some practice but that's no big deal.
>>
>>30655790
We could learn easily how to use it, plus we could get one with natural buffs to it.(we could buff gear later on, but we need like 1 or 2 more metamagic fort us to be able to.)
>>30655769
Its not impossible to fix it up, plus if we can get the AI to reprogram it then we could probably use it to help fix it up, pl;us its has more value then a gaur, and can be sold off if we deem it too much of a hassle.

You brace yourself against the floor and with a heave shove the construct into the bath. After that, it's a simple wave of your hand and the expense of a little vys that leave the construct sitting in a thick block of ice. Well, it won't be getting out of that anytime soon. Just to be safe you turn off all faucets so the bath will drain and the construct won't be sitting in a pool of hot water anymore. Keep it frozen for as long as possible.
>Vys: (8/14)

You hear a loud cracking noise from the entry way, and have to shield your eyes for a moment as a blindingly intense light burst forth from the doorway accompanied by a loud scream. You rush outside once the light has faded to see that Profectus' arm has cracked itself open once more and glows with that unnatural light. Another construct sits outside the door in the hallway adjacent the Commander's Quarters, but whatever it is Profectus did seemed to have boiled a good portion of it away.

Unlike the dog construct, this one looks more like an ape. It has one thick, powerful looking grasping arm and the other arm is thin and agile looking, ending in twin whips lined with sharp barbs of metal. Its head is an empty framework, and its torso is the same. You haven't a clue what is controlling the construct since both the obvious options seem void of any function.

Profectus' attack seems to have destroyed most of its right leg, as well as blasted the door off its hinges. You can see the glow in his arm building for a follow up.

You stalk towards the wounded construct while it writhes around on the floor, barbed whips lashing about and scouring deep gashes in the metal walls and in the remains of the door. Profectus raises his arm as you get close and you shield your eyes, there is another flash and another pained scream as a jet of flame shoots out of his arm. You actually feel your skin start to burn despite being several feet away from the path of the flame.

When the light fades, all that's left of the ape-like construct is the grasping arm and its legs. Still, it continues to struggle. However, this far gone it can't do anything but thrash about. You step through the gaping hole in the door to finish it off, but before you can get close, you feel a powerful pulse of Vys from something to your left and the heat of a fire spell barreling towards you...

You feel the spell getting closer and know you're going to take the hit. You quickly raise your hand and release a pulse of vys to at least lessen the damage. The pulse does its job of stripping a lot of the momentum and power out of the spell, but still as it hits you you're tossed aside and end up landing heavily on your shoulder. Your armor forcefully turns your head away from the blast, so by and large the flame just roils over you without actually hurting you.
>Minor Wound: Burns on the face and neck area.
>Vys: (7/14) You're starting to feel drained.

You pull yourself up and raise your spear, finally getting a look at your attacker. You find yourself facing a gleaming automaton seemingly wrought from silver. It wields a sword that gleams with the same silvery sheen as the rest of its body, and seems to hum softly with energy. Its armor is cracked and falling to pieces, violent blue light boiling from the wounds. You think it might just be a mobile container for vys, but the joints articulate and its eyes shine with a sort of alien intelligence.

You snap off a spell without really thinking about it, the boiling black ball of vys sailing completely wide. The construct doesn't even need to try to dodge, instead closing the distance between you and it. As it passes by the door, another bolt of fire shoots out and sheers off its right arm, its sword arm. The construct stumbles to the side, caught off guard, and you hear something thud against the floor inside the Commander's Quarters.

Now sans sword arm, it raises its left hand and you see Vys pour from its wounds to collect in front of its hand. As it does, the light of intelligence in its eyes dims, it seems if you can just deplete its vys it will be nothing but an empty shell. Unfortunately, that means you'll have to either let it hurl fire balls at you until it runs out of energy, you'll have to poison it, or you'll have to crack its armor completely open.

It finishes casting the spell, and a comet of flame comes sailing your way.

Rolled 1, 6, 10 - 4 = 13

You duck your head and cast your spear aside, using your arms to shield your face as the fire ball explodes against your armored forearms. The flame seems to fill the air around you, but your armor completely negates the damage you would've been dealt. As the fire clears you step forward and with both hands collect vys at your abdomen, the power pouring forth before you send it flying towards the construct.
>Vys: (3/14) You feel like a dead man walking. You're hollowed out, empty. Running purely on adrenaline and instinct.

The poison spell doesn't explode like a fire ball does, it hits the construct and sticks to his armor, spreading itself wide and seeping into the cracks. The vys boiling out of the wounds goes from an angry blue to a sickly green, and the intelligence that shone within its eyes is suddenly and violently snuffed out as the glow within the construct fades away to nothing. The last of its energy seeps out as a thick black goo, which quickly evaporates into the air.

You collapse onto your knees, desperately grasping for your spear and forcing yourself onto your feet with its help. By the gods, you're tired. That was the hardest fight of your life! You thank the heavens there aren't more of those things lurking around the corner.

As you hobble into the Commander's Quarters you see Profectus on his knees, clutching his arm to his chest and rocking back and forth. Lava surges forth between the cracks and drops down his arm, gradually cooling into stone. He seems barely conscious of what's going on around him, you're glad he wasn't facing that thing alone or else you might be down one companion, then again he saved your ass too. You'll call it even.

Chryssa is still nowhere to be seen.

>Mark
Mark leaves an imprint on an area about five feet by five feet. You always have an innate sense of which direction to go to reach that area, and it takes into account natural barriers like seas and mountains.
>Manipulate
Manipulate does different things depending on metamagic and other effects. Used with elemental effects, it basically just amplifies your natural control over them. For instance, casting manipulate water would temporarily boost you to Master level. Casting Manipulate Poison would let you reverse the effects of poison but not completely negate them, maybe limit them to a certain area. Casting Manipulate Vys would let you control any creature like a puppet.
>Destroy/Create
Casting Destroy Poison would immediately negate all poison in your system. Destroy Earth would delete a chunk of earth of varying size depending on the amount of Vys spent.

Create Poison would create a liquid concentrate of your magical poison that you could carry with you. Create Earth would create an amount of Earth in a shape of your choosing, size depending on vys expenditure.

>Slow/Speed
Cast by themselves, they inhibit an enemy or buff an ally. Casting speed poison makes poison work through an enemy's system faster. Essentially it's like an Amplification/Debuff when used in conjunction with the right effects.

I'll make a pastebin at some point. Spellbook or something like that.

We should definitely learn Leech, It's a Quick Fix for being low on Vys.

Could we use it on animals? Could we use it on these ruin cable things?
>>
>>30657511
Yes to both. However, Leech caps off at 75% of your max capacity, rounded down. So your max Vys if you leech instead of meditate is 10.
>>
>>30657565
Then we need that shit
>>
>>30657565
Leech would be very useful in here due to being surrounded by Vys all the time. We don't really need to worry about running out.
>>
>>30657565
Does that mean Leech has no base cost unless we combine it with something like ranged or weapon affinity?
>>
>>30657656
More like it has a base cost but if it succeeds then that cost is negated.

If we cast it but whatever it is resists for some reason then we will lose 1 Vys.
>>
You briefly peek into the bathroom, and see the frozen construct sitting in the empty bath. It's completely encased, and the ice hasn't even cracked a little bit so far. You can safely say that it will be stuck like that for the better part of a day, at least. Indefinitely if you maintain the ice block regularly.

Secure in the knowledge you won't have another one of those damn constructs bursting into the room and trying to kill you, you approach the bedroom door. Hesitantly, you knock on the door. Perhaps a minute goes by with no answer, and you knock again. Still no answer. What on earth is keeping her? You push the door open gently and step into the room. It's dark, and as you step inside a gentle hum fills your head. Its relaxing, almost oppressively so. In your weakened state, it's hard to resist the urge to take a nap.

The sight before you is disturbing, on several levels. Fulvia stands next to the bed, staring at Chryssa while she sleeps, a beatific smile splitting her face. Her form flickers and wavers, as if she is both real and unreal, here and not. Chryssa seems entirely oblivious to the woman hovering over her, still sleeping quite contentedly from what you can tell.

How much would we leech at a time?
>>

Leech has a base cost of 1, so you can't cast it if you're at 0 vys. Combining it with other effects increases the base cost. So Ranged Leech can't be cast with less than 2 vys.

Out of combat, it would just bump you up to full.
In combat, it would restore 2 vys per round as long as it was maintained. 3 vys per round if cast through a weapon with Spell Amplification or enhanced by the Speed effect. 4 Vys per round if cast with speed and through a Spell Amplifying weapon.

It would be 3 vys a turn even after your spear is no longer in contact with the target. The maintenance fee is also waved for leech, it's unique in that regard.
>>
>>30657825
I think if we lose connection it ends. So if we impale something and hold on it continues but we'll probably have to use ranged with the attack to keep the connection at a distance.

>>30657865
You'll need to experiment to find that out.

Paralysis has completely frozen everything we have used it on so far. It's kind of been our bread and butter.
>>
>>30658078
Oh yeah, it would take out a shit ton of mooks. You're supposed to be able to take out a shit ton of mooks though. Most proper Vatis would be able to negate paralysis fairly easily (Five Effects EVERY Vatis Should Know), and a lot of enemies, like these constructs, are immune or resistant to certain effects.
>>
>>30658078
Or we can fuck them up easily with Paralyze+poison.

Your voice cuts through the relaxing hum that fills the air. “Fulvia! By the gods, you could've gotten me killed! What are you trying to do keeping one of my bodyguards from coming to my aid?” You once more adopt the tone of a pompous ass, slipping into the roll of 'Dux Cyprian'.

Fulvia flickers out of existence, the hum cuts out, and the lights come on. She flickers back into existence a moment later a few feet in front of you, looking much like a child caught doing something they shouldn't. “Commander I'm... sorry for my breach of conduct. I just wanted to make sure she slept peacefu-” You cut her off with a sharp gesture. She's speaking at a breakneck pace like she was when you first busted into this part of the ruin, but you think you've got a better grasp of this sort of Rhynian now that you've been exposed to it. In fact, you feel pretty confident with your Rhynian in general after the last few days.

“Peaceful nothing! I just had to fight off three of those damned defense constructs you lost control of and you kept an invaluable ally out of the fight! Do you know what would have happened if I died? Do you want to be abandoned here alone for another thousand years?” A threatening tone enters your voice towards the end, and you see panic in Fulvia for a moment before she regains control of herself. This thing really is rather believable in simple conversation.

She folds her arms behind her back. “Of course not. I'll seal this section of the hallway and make sure none of the rogue constructs can reach this part of the ruin. Call for me if you have any further questions or request.” She vanishes again before you can get a word off.

>>
You're listing pretty severely to one side, and you force yourself up to prevent tipping over. “Constructs busted into the room. Profectus and I killed them.” You give her the annotated version, you can get into a bit more depth later if she's interested. Fortunately she seems to pick up that you're absolutely exhausted and doesn't nag you for any more info. You wait for her to get out of bed, pull on her shawl, and grab her weapons before asking her to help you into the treasury. You'll be damned if you leave without the cash.
>New Wealth: 3514 silver, Extremely Wealthy, nothing is out of your price range.

After you've cleaned out the treasury you sit down and eat what's left of the meal that servant construct brought you yesterday. You wonder what it looked like, and if you could use them somehow to help you. Might be able to help you out in a fight, maybe. Then again servant doesn't really imply it's armed. At least the food is okay, even if it's cold. Its some kind of flatbread with cheese and meat on it. How they managed to preserve it for this long you'll never know.

Finally, you look through the ruined remains of the desk and don't find much. An old encoded letter and a few scraps of torn cloth are about it.

The room thoroughly gone over, you tell Chryssa to sling Profectus over her shoulder, since he seems to have fallen asleep, and call out in a clear voice. “Fulvia! I need your help.” It isn't a moment later that the woman shimmers into existence in front of you. “Do you know anywhere else we'd be safe? The Commander's Quarters are compromised.”

(1/2)

She reaches up to rub her chin. That seems like something of a useless gesture for a projected image, but you suppose it makes her more realistic. “Well, the Armory has thick metal doors you could seal behind you. Nothing would be able to get inside there, not even the most powerful of the defense constructs. However, there seem to be enemies inside. Just one or two small constructs. Nothing too difficult. There is also the kitchen storage. It's got a metal door, though it's not reinforced like the Armory door. No enemies in there though. Finally, I'd say the barracks would offer a modicum of protection, since it was designed to be easily defensible. I don't have sensors in the barracks though.”

You think about it for a moment, and decide to go with the safe option. For now, at least. “Escort us to kitchen storage. I can rest there and then retake the Armory. From there, we can eliminate any further threats to my control over the facility.” You nod, with that, and Fulvia flickers again, reappearing by the door. You hobble your way after her while Chryssa hauls Profectus.

On the way, you note that all doors you don't need to access are sealed shut. Seems she took her mistake to heart, at least. You still don't know how much you can trust her. Is she just lonely, or has she lost it after a thousand years of solitude? The last thing you want is some insane intelligent construct cutting off ventilation to your room to protect you, or something like that.

It doesn't take long to reach the kitchen and, surprisingly, this part of the ruin isn't abandoned. Tiny little robots zip about, performing maintenance. They're only about two feet tall, and their eyes are large. They glow softly with energy and they stomp about on stubby little legs. They're actually... kinda cute. Then again, maybe exhaustion is starting to get to you. Fulvia gestures to the storage room door, a thick metal door with a heavy handle, and you tug it open. Inside it is depressingly empty. Only a few stacks of those frozen flatbread things in boxes and a couple of crates. It'll do for now though.

You curl up on the floor at the back and try to focus yourself. It's not hard, exhausted as you are. “Keep watch, I'm going to try to restore my reserves of energy. Profectus should wake up soon.” You've no way of knowing that, but you can't imagine hell be passed out for long. Assuming his arm functions on the same principal as spells and he passed out after only three gouts of flame, his vys pool can't be that large.

You're frustrated by how close you came to having a breakthrough with water magic, so you think you'll try again. You're sure that this time you'll have a revelation, and you could certainly use one. You drag your knife across your forearms and slow the blood before it can begin to pour from the wounds, settling in for the long process of gathering vys to yourself before starting the actual meditation.
>Vys: (14/14)

As you start to knit the wound back together, you lose focus. At first, you're worried you're about to get pulled out of the meditation by some outside force before you can properly meditate. Instead, you find that your inattentive mind picks up most of the work for you. Flesh, muscle, and nerves knit themselves back together simultaneously without you needing to micromanage. It all just clicked, making it much easier to heal the deep gashes in your arm.

You've realized that water magic in general needs to click. It shouldn't be a laborious process, it should just come as naturally to you as breathing or flexing a muscle.
>Congratulations! You're half the way to Master level with Water Magic
>Congratulations! You're now capable of healing larger wounds at the cost of less vys. The other benefits of being a Master Water Vatis will come with your next success.
(1/2)
>>
You snap out of the meditative trance with that revelation, and inspect your arms. They've healed over cleanly, not a mark or scar to indicate that there once was a wound there. Chryssa and Profectus are watching you, somewhat unsettled you think. “I'm not going to be able to get used to you cutting yourself like that. It's weird, man.” Profectus comments. You note that he looks much better than when you fled the Commander's Quarters.

“You're one to talk, considering your arm is made of molten rock and stone.” You shoot back, while pushing yourself up. You note that the shallow burns on your neck and face caused by that fireball you caught in the side have also healed. “Now then...”

Always looking for more pictures.

“Lets go to the armory. The sooner we loot this place, the sooner we can get out of here. Plus, it might have something to help us take out the rest of these bastards. How long was I out?” Chryssa speaks up promptly. “About six hours.” Well, shit. That's quite a bit longer than you wanted to be out. Still, that dog construct should still be stuck in that block of ice pretty firmly. It should take at least a day to melt.

You push the kitchen storage door open, and your companions white behind you. Chryssa with bow at the ready, and Profectus with his arm held by his side. Fortunately, as the door swings open you find the kitchen empty. Not even the little servant robots are dashing about maintaining the kitchen equipment anymore. You call out in a clear voice. “Fulvia! I need to see you.”

Not a moment later she flickers into existence in front of you. “I'm glad to see you've awoken. Those intruders managed to bypass the generator field by building a bridge, but fortunately they still have no way of opening the maintenance door that leads to this part of the facility. It's firmly within the range of the protective field.” Well, that's somewhat concerning but not overly so. Still, it's probably only a matter of time until they figure out how to open the door without getting killed.

“I'd like you to lead me to the armory. It's vital we reclaim it before moving on to clear out the rest of the facility.” Fulvia nods, and flickers again to reappear by the kitchen door. “This way, Dux. The armory is near the western entrance.”

(1/2)
>>
You follow Fulvia through the ruin, once more finding the doors you don't need to use sealed wherever you go. Just how many of those defense bots are there, that the entire facility needs to be shut down just so you can walk through the halls safely? Can they not be contained to one or two areas?

Eventually, you reach a large steel door. It's about two meters tall and if you had to guess just by looking at it probably a few feet thick. The symbol of the Rhynian Empire is stamped proudly into the metal, seemingly untouched by wear. Fulvia speaks up again. “There are two small constructs inside, trapped. They're fragile, but they have powerful weaponry so be careful.”

You press your hand against the scanner, and Fulvia vanishes in an instant as the doors start to slide open. Surprisingly, they don't squeal or grind as you'd expected. In fact they silently slide into the walls, revealing row upon row of empty rack and abandoned armor stand. Well, that's something of an exaggeration. You see a few short swords, some stock Rhynian mail armor, not the plated Centurion armor you have. Better than nothing, of course, but not special or all that valuable. A handful of spears scattered around in stands, most of them much too long to be practical, you'd think. Perhaps a more detailed search would yield more valuable finds.

Two small constructs patrol the racks. They both remind you vaguely of chimps. Not as bulky as their apeish brethren, but probably more agile. Well, if not for the massive racks of tubes lining their backs. You've no idea what on earth those might be used for. They're a little less than a meter tall and both of them very deteriorated, though it's hard to pick out specifics from this distance.

You crouch low and your companions follow suit. The three of you try to stealthily sneak through the empty racks up to the two constructs, but for a moment it seems like it just wasn't meant to be. Profectus' stone arm bumps into a wooden armor rack and he doesn't notice in time to prevent the rack from tipping over. It's only by your interference, channeling vys to enhance your strength and your reaction time, that you manage to catch it before it hits the ground.
>Vys: (11/14)

Fortunately after that he's more careful. You manage to get within attacking distance of the two constructs fairly easily. Chryssa stayed further back with an arrows nocked while you and Profectus are on the forefront, watching the tow constructs patrol. Your companions will attack on your signal, but you need to decide how you're going to do this...

You channel vys into your palm, collecting it into a poison spell. Your hand grows slick, as if covered in a thick layer of grease and grime. An itch spreads up your forearm, it almost feels like something crawls under your skin. It's nauseating and maddening at the same time.

Then you pump more power into the spell. Then a little more power still. The sensation of bugs crawling under your skin spreads up your arm past your elbow, all the way to your shoulder. Your hand seems to swell with pus and rot and you're filled with an overwhelming sense that the way you're twisting reality and wrong, and that you are a scourge upon society. You should be purged and cast aside.

It occurs to you briefly this is probably one of the reasons so many Vatis go insane, the incessant changes wrought upon their form with every spell only to vanish when the spell is cast. Suffering the effects for a brief instance before forcing it onto another. That, however, is a problem for another time. You slide gracefully between the empty weapon racks and bring your hand forward, a slap and then a loud burst of noise as the spell discharges.

The rot and pus and itching sensation vanish in an instant, as do the voices in your head belittling you. You watch the corruption spread through the construct, arcing from tube to tube and across its limbs. Its 'eye' if you can really call it that swivels to look at you for a brief moment, before going dark. You're about to congratulate you, when one of the tubes on its back goes off with a forceful whoosh of air.

Only to end in a small, teardrop shaped canister flopping lifelessly out of the tube and clattering against the floor. You get the feeling your spell interfered with weapon and prevented it from properly going off.

Or we could take the tubes.
>>
>>30661854
or we can sell these suckers.
>>
Profectus is less lucky. You hear a crack as he stands up, his arm splitting apart. He levels it point blank against his construct's torso and there's a flash of light as he uses that arm for whatever it is exactly it does. You're not sure if it's a spell or some aspect of an exotic animal or what. The flash of light cores straight through the construct, and it isn't long after that an arrow imbeds itself firmly in the rotating 'eye' of the thing.

It slumps to the ground, but as it does so another heavy rush of air sounds out through the cavernous armory, followed by another, and another. They sail through the air with a low, ominous whistle before the first one impacts the ceiling high above. There's a burst of fire, and a thunderous sound that almost deafens you. The entire facility seems to shake and rattle, and it only gets worse as the next two hit the ceiling and detonate.

A twisted girder slams into the empty racks of weapons, followed by a cascade of dirt and rock. You don't think you have long before the roof falls in on you.

A chunk of rock large enough to crush a man alive falls from the ceiling, shattering against the cement floor of the armory and scattering dust and debris everywhere. You cough, as more and more of the ceiling falls down onto the armory floor. You call out to your companions. “Grab whatever you can! We need to get out of here before the whole place falls on our ass!”

That seems to knock them out of their shocked reverie. You snatch that dud canister and stuff it in your pockets before peering through the dust and gloom for anything that might be of any value.

And you find it, sitting underneath an armor rack is a locked case. It's not large, about the size of your forearm and twice as wide. Still, it's locked. That has to mean it's valuable. You snatch it up and tuck it under your arm before bolting for the door.

You see Profectus ahead of you, holding some Rhynian mail armor over his head to protect from falling debris. You don't notice anything particularly special about it, but you're also not close enough to get a good look. Chryssa is following close behind you with a bundle of something thrown over her shoulder. You're not sure what could be in there, actually it might be a suit or something like that now that you get a better look at it.

On your way out you snag an old Rhynian Crossbow. A feat of engineering only recently rediscovered in Aleamond, if what you've heard is correct. Finally the three of you come stumbling out of the armory. Profectus ends up sprawled out on his stomach in front of the doors. You're trying to get them to close as quickly as you can, and Chryssa is hunched over and panting, suit of... whatever it is still tossed over her shoulder.

It seems to be fully loaded with a sheaf of bolts already. The lockbox is, of course, locked. You'll need to set at it with your tools to find out what mysteries it contains. “Well... what did you guys get?”

Chryssa volunteers whatever it is she snatched first. She pulls it off of her shoulder and unfurls it, brushing it out. Its got plates at the shoulders and on the soles of the feet. On the forearm is a panel you recognize as much like your own. Two plugs cover the nostrils and the whole thing would probably fit the body tightly. In a way... it sort of reminds you of a version of your own armor, except it doesn't have any armor plates. Just the underlying covering. Perhaps this is Technician's Armor?

Granted, it would probably sell for a good price to the right people, and even the worst Rhynian armor is better than most things you'd find at your local blacksmith, but compared to the armor Chryssa found, which is practically an excuse to mint your own silver, and the crossbow you found, which you could probably trade to Sadik in exchange for a possibly more useful artifact or a boatload of cash, it's nothing special. Just standard Rhynian armor.

"...I think I'd rather just keep mine. Better than this one piece as far as protection goes." He comments. You don't really disagree with him.

>You've probably got enough at this point that Sadik would be more than satisfied with the job you've done, even if you don't sell him everything.

You wait while Profectus pulls on his new armor. Meanwhile, Chryssa carefully folds the Technician's armor up on itself and tucks it away in her backpack. That's another thing you need to get Profectus besides a nickname and a mount. Some way to store things. You really just need to take the guy shopping some time soon, then again you suppose he deserves a cut of all that money you found in the treasury too.

After everyone is ready to depart, you pick up the lockbox and rest the crossbow against your shoulder. “Fulvia! I need you here.” You call out in a clear voice. Not a moment later she appears in front of you, shimmering and half-real. She looks behind you to the sealed armory doors. “I lost sight and control over the armory after you started fighting the constructs. I apologize if there is something I could have helped you with inside.”

You wave your hand dismissively. “No no, it's fine. I'd like you to take us to the armory. On the way, why don't you tell me about any of the other parts of this wing you haven't already shown me?” You've been feeling a little guilty about treating Fulvia like, well, a subhuman piece of filth. You'll try to lighten up on her assuming she doesn't go full bore and try to kill you.
(1/2 or 3)
>>
>>30662814
We'll also have to explain that we aren't a Rhynian official.
>>
As she guides you through the sealed hallways she stats talking. “Well, besides the cafeteria, kitchen, Commander's Quarters, armory, and the barracks there is also the command post which according to what I can see is absolutely full of constructs, at least two command units waiting there, Vys Array, which is different from The Array by the way, I cautioned them against using such similar names for two completely different objects, but you know they didn't listen.” You motion for her to get back on topic and she clears her throat. Again, it strikes you that the Rhynians went to such lengths to make this believable. “Then there is also the Core. That is where the controls for all the Command Units are. If we could disable the command units, it would be a simple task to clear out the rest of the constructs. They're too heavily damaged to put up a fight without the guiding hand of greater beings.” That terminology puts you a little on edge, but you ignore it. “Unfortunately the Command Units keep the Core well guarded.”

It isn't long after that you arrive at the barracks. It's accessed by a heavy iron doorway at the end of an increasingly narrow hallway. You can see what she meant by easily defensible. “Unfortunately, I cannot see or control anything inside the barracks. This was done for privacy reasons. Silly if you ask me.” You didn't ask, but whatever. “You'll be on your own once you get inside, but it might be empty for all I know.”

You have Chryssa and Profectus line up behind you and you grab hold of the door handle gently. You count to three before turning the handle and slowly opening the door. It slides effortlessly on its hinges, not making a sound. Man, do those little servant constructs oil these hinges too? You don't think you've ever been in a building that the doors didn't at least squeak a little.

Stepping into the room, you find it well lit and well maintained. The beds are all made and the sheets all look freshly washed. The pillows are fluffed and inviting. The floor is made of cement, and the back of the room seems to be taken up by weird stalls. Perhaps toilets? They have strange branched faucets at the top though. You're not sure what they'd be used for. At the end of every bed is a chest, but each one of them is wide open and clearly empty.

This is almost eery. It feels like you just walked into the facility as it was ready to receive new recruits. Still, no enemies immediately visible, and unless they're hiding under the beds you don't exactly see many places to hide in here.

“I don't trust this.” You state, Chryssa nods in agreement. Profectus doesn't seem to share your paranoia. “Oh come on! Clearly those little servant things come in here and tidy the place up. No need to be so paranoid.” He admonishes the two of you while flopping down onto one of the beds with a grateful sigh. “Gods this has been a long day. Still more left to do, too.” He grumbles, mostly to himself you think.

You're not taking any chances though. You check under every bed, in every stall, under every sheet and pillow. You check everything you can think of looking for any signs of danger and find nothing. With a sigh, you too flop back onto one of the beds and Chryssa follows suit, choosing one a few spaces down from both you and Profectus. Since you seem to be safe for now, you pull out your lockpicks and start working on this lockbox...

You fiddle with the lock for a while, absentmindedly clicking the tumblers into the locked position. It isn't long before the lockbox pops open with a soft click. Well, finally something goes your way without you needing to flood your body with magical power.

You push open the lid and find yourself looking at... well, you're not sure what you're looking at. Its got a trigger, like a crossbow. It also has a handle and two tiny hammers pressed against grooved wheels. It is ridiculously ornate, made entirely of ebony and gold except for the twin barrels, which are steel. It comes with a tiny velvet bag, filled with about thirty strange... you don't really have a word to describe them. They remind you of those tear-drop shaped canisters that fell out of the construct's tubes and exploded. Maybe a smaller version of those?
>Leave it, you want nothing to do with those exploding canisters.

You look at it for a moment, and then over to where Profectus seems to be dozing. “Hey, Rocky, come take a look at this for me.” He pushes himself up into a half-seated position. “I swear to your gods and mine, if you start calling me Rocky I'll find a way to get out of this damned facility without you.” You laugh and wave him off. “Relax, relax. Just a little friendly ribbing. Seriously though-” You hold up the device. “What in Surya's domain is this?”

Profectus leans forward to get a better look at it, before eventually shrugging. “I don't know, a lot of stuff is still foggy. I think it's a weapon, maybe? Either that or a tool of some sort.” He stares at it a little more intensely before shaking his head. “I don't know, I've got an inkling of a memory but it's just not coming through properly. Maybe a... firearm?” You can't quite resist cracking a grin. “I think you're the only one with a fire arm here.” He cast you a look. “Puns? Is that even a pun? Come on, try a little harder than that.”

Screw him, you thought that was clever.

It's probably not loaded if these Rhynians stuck to standard firearm safety.
>>
You look down the two barrels and see their empty, but don't see any other way to load them except for dropping something down the barrels. You pick up one of the shells, you think shells is the best word for them, and look at it a little more closely. It seems like it has a small metal tab on the side, and you peel that off. Oddly enough inside is a thin layer of cloth covering the resulting opening and keeping what you think is a fine powder from spilling out, looks kind of like coal dust.

You slide it into the top barrel and pull back the tiny hammer thing that corresponds to the top barrel. This thing seems complicated as all get out, wouldn't all these moving parts just end up breaking at the drop of a hat? Ah well. You point it at the bed next to you and pull the forward-most trigger. Nothing happens, so you try the trigger closer to the grip.

There's an explosion, and the firearm kicks your arm back into your shoulder and upwards. You're so surprised you end up letting go of it, and it flies a few feet behind you before skidding across the ground. Gods, that was loud! Who on earth would think holding something that powerful in their hand is a good idea? Still, taking a look at the bed, it seems to have cored a hole straight through, and not only that there's a hole the size of your head blasting out the bottom of the bed. Not a very practical weapon, but it sure does get the job done.
>Rhynian Officer's Pistol acquired.

Profectus has leapt straight off the bed and is staring at the firearm as if it were a snake about to bite him. Chryssa similarly seems startled. She actually screamed rather girlishly at the sudden loud noise when it went off. Then again, so did you.
