Welcome to Academy City. The time is early morning, the weather is going to be okay and the date is July 29.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you are lamenting that you are booked for the day. Instead of having a day free in your summer vacation to pursue more personal matters you have been asked by Aneue to visit your old home. Not that there was anything wrong with that but you were sure that Touma wanted to tag along. You’re not sure whether it was love at first sight or not but he was quite insistent that you introduced her to him. You had delayed your decision until today.

Yesterday, after Aneue’s visit, the Index and Kaoru had a bit of a tiff regarding on who or where the former was going to stay. Touma only threw oil on the fire by suggesting a compromise that satisfied neither. Index may have taken a bit of his scalp in response. It was all very amusing to you since you stayed out of it with doing the dishes as an excuse. By the time you retired to your own room, negotiations had reduced the decision to staying with either Kaoru or Touma.

Regardless of what was chosen you yourself had a few decisions to make as well.
>Wake up Touma, let him tag along
>Leave him, there’ll be other opportunities
Also, bring forty-five insurance?
>Leave the gun at home
>Take it with you

Well it didn’t seem likely that you’d run in to trouble today so you get up, clean yourself and trek upstairs to wake up Touma. It wasn’t too early you think so you knock on his door. To your surprise you find him already up and he’s making breakfast. The Index is sitting patiently at the table awaiting her serving.

“I see you decided to stay with Touma,” you greet the Index.

“Quite, I would rather stay with Touma since it is safer for me,” she explains her choice, “I am not sure what kind of magical restraints or means would be employed to keep me ‘safe’. The Sikh may see themselves as protectors but they are needless meddlers who would go to any lengths to ensure that protection.”

“I don’t know,” Touma says as he serves her food, “Kaoru seems like a nice person.”

“To be fair she cut Stiyl’s tendons without feeling a thing,” you point out.

“See? That’s exactly what I’m talking about,” she exclaims.

“To be fair he would have probably attacked and Kanzaki did kidnap me.”

Index gave a small “hmph” and settled in for breakfast. All you had was some tea as Touma didn’t really expect you to drop by. As they finished you decide to,

With Touma in tow, the both of you make your way to Cypress Park in School District 13. It wasn’t like Aneue told you to accompany her. In her own words, she wanted you to visit it with you. Thus you only had to be there when she did and then you could finagle your way out in to doing other things. On the way, you’ve chatted with Touma about your respective childhoods. Things like how Touma’s bad luck seemed to afflicted those around him as well as himself and how you ran the streets with Sagara and Tadakuni. It passes the time until you finally arrive.

Cypress Park is just as you remember it. In fact it seems to have been slightly renovated. The paint is cleaner and the playground actually has a jungle gym now. It’s well used as too given that there were some kids hanging around it. There was an adult supervising who you recognised as the principal, or more informally, Mum. You haven’t come back very often since you left for middle school. Some part of you feels bad about it seeing as you could be teaching a whole new generation of scoundrels how to annoy Aneue at the orphanage.

“Kyril!” she seems surprised, “Kyril is that you?”

How do you greet Mum?

You had an image to present given that most of the kids were watching.

“Hey Mum,” you start off casually antagonistic.

“Oh Kyril,” she sees through your deception easily.

Then her hug puts a spanner in the works. You have to lower yourself a lot just to hug her back, and give her a more respectable greeting.

“I’m back Mum,” you say, “Missed you.”

“I do too,” she replies, “So may I know who your friend is?”

“Kamijou Touma ma’am, a classmate,” Touma gives her a respectful bow as well.

With your pleasantries swept aside you step in to the yard. The kids mostly ignore you.

“You barely visit,” Mum complains.

“Only because you keep making me look after the kids,” you retort.

“So I take it your ‘Aneue’ made you,” she makes the word sound so suggestive, “You’d never show up otherwise. What did you do this time?”

“Who knows?” you answer evasively.

“Right,” she doesn’t buy it, “Well can you at least look over the morning recess for a bit? We’re having a birthday celebration today so we’re really busy.”

“Alright, as long as you don’t make me wear those stupid aprons,” you agree.

Kamijou however has no such objections and is easily roped in to do some menial task or another. With the adult gone, most of the kids find their courage and approach you. It’ll get annoying if you don’t interact but really it’s not like you were being paid or anything.

There was no need to get up to some trouble, yet. After all, you also kind of wanted to try the new jungle gym. It totally would have made your days here much less boring. Then again you were able to get up to no good and forced you to be creative in your attempts to amuse yourself so it wasn’t all that bad. Kids these days had it good. The only thing stopping you from acting out like a senile old man was the fact that they were calling you onii-chan, big brother. Just like you always dreamed of, being on the other end of the age spectrum wasn’t so bad really.

A few of them had powers though but as expected of children, they were Level 1 at most. Most of them aren’t discouraged by it though. Seeing you as proof of being able to increase their level was pretty hard to refute. Those that did you hung upside down in the air for a bit. They weren’t exactly hard to lift either seeing as they were likely half your own mass. Further experimentation was cut off by the arrival of Aneue. You don’t think she’d approve. With her are a gaggle of girls, no doubt volunteers.

The kids call her “granny” and you can barely hold back a giggle. Maybe you should do something.

Quickly gathering the kids in to a huddle, you enlighten them to the nature of the prank that you are now going to pull on Aneue. It feels like old times already as their faces light up with delight and mischief. After all, they were going to show their ‘respects’ to Aneue. As she opens the gate you rush up to greet her and block most of her view. Behind you the kids get in to position. You note that behind her are Sparky, Shirai, Kaoru and two others in Kaoru’s uniform. It made it even better.

“Good morning Aneue, welcome back Aneue,” you use as formal a register as Japanese allows and bow.

Almost with a snap, you shuffle back and to the side. On either side of the path leading to the front door is a row of kids. Each of them shouts in unison,

“Welcome back Aneue,” they mimic your words and bow.

Before she can react, you give them the signal and make a break for it. The kids follow your lead and dash indoors with you. Aneue only holds her head in her palms as she enters. Kaoru seems silently amused whereas Sparky and her friends seem confused. The only one with a disapproving glare is Shirai.

“I should have known better,” Aneue starts.

“What are you doing here?” Shirai asks with some amount of frost.

There really wasn’t a reason to cause a scene but you justify it as entertaining the kids. Dramatically you act out how wounding her words sound.

“Oh Shirai, how you wound me.”

Your exaggerated collapse draws cries of “Nii-san” and “Aniki” amidst more laughter.

“Can I not even find peace in my own home?” your eyes try not to betray mischief, “With the way you treat me you probably just hate me because I’m a foreigner.”

Still you can’t help devolving in to laughter with the kids. Aneue mutters to Shirai about having to put up with you as a kid. It doesn’t help Shirai’s opinion of you but it’s not like you cared what she thought in the first place. As your little scene comes to an end, Touma bursts from the kitchen with a stack of plates. His gaze first catches Aneue and his delight is evident until it settles on Sparky. Thankfully you prevent the plates he was carrying to smash in to the floor as he drops them. The shock on his face is mirrored by Sparky who looks ready to blast him like a taser. Kaoru however manages reign Sparky in with just a hand on her shoulder.

“Perhaps we should get to work Misaka-san,” she suggests.

The middle school girls eye each other. From the look in their eye, you are definitely an obstacle to whatever half-baked scheme they cooked up. It is also to your surprise that Aneue is involved. Touma of course returns to the kitchen, something about baking cakes.

Well whatever they were planning you certainly weren’t going to just turn a blind eye to it. Aneue moves to the kitchen to help with making a cake. The girls are easily brief in by Mum and set to work. Though you don’t have any official power, hell it could easily be the reverse, the kids and their support in your schemes made you the de facto power. However, as all kids were, they are fickle little things and thus required you to cook up more zany schemes to satisfy them.

It was mainly minor pranking to be honest. You are somewhat surprised to find out that Sparky actually wears shorts underneath her miniskirt and whether Asuka does as well. Not that you were eager to find out or anything, it was just a thing to ponder. You also familiarise yourself with Kaoru’s two classmates, Uiharu Kazari and Saten Ruiko. The latter shares your enthusiasm for mild mischief and evident by her liberally flipping Uiharu’s skirt to demonstrate. Uiharu of course for her part is amazed that you are in a relationship with a Lady of Tokiwadai. The girl has an obsession with them apparently and gossip travels fast. Kaoru is the only one doing any of their assigned work but her smile is of amusement so you don’t pay it any mind.

Knowing Touma, you were sure he’d set something on fire sooner or later. It wasn’t matter of “if” but rather of “when.” Thus it is to your surprise to find three kitchen workers. One of which you remember is called Daigo but you weren’t particularly close with him. The other two, Touma and Aneue, are working awkwardly around the other. Daigo, who you presume is the main chef, seems oblivious to the whole affair. That only lasts until he asks Aneue to break open a bag of flour. With strength that you had firsthand knowledge of, she rips it apart with her bare hands and nearly causes a flour explosion.

The confusion is momentary before their surprise is vocalised and the air circulated. The middle school girls, sans Kaoru, enter curiously. They eye Aneue, then the torn bag of flour in her hands and then Daigo. So that was their game, you thought. They were trying to pair her off with Daigo. Admittedly you’d never see it coming if Aneue told you she had someone she liked. It looked like their plan was to get her to buy some cake with Daigo seeing as time was running out for the party. If you were to interfere with their little scheme you would elect to go out and buy some cake yourself but perhaps this was a blessing in disguise. Touma said his terrible luck often propagated so there was no real need to do anything.

With the kind of luck Touma has, you’d never ever be a gambling person. Thus you think you are justified by the code of brotherhood to run some interference. What better way to throw their plans in to disarray by offering to buy cake. After all, you weren’t actually doing anything really important apart from visiting Mum and the kids. Being official volunteers, read wearing that stupid apron, the girls had to actually look after the kids and sweep the premises. The fact that Kaoru was out there doing the latter was evidence of their negligence. You, being a somewhat useless bum at the moment could make yourself useful by buying cake. Plus with your powers, it was practically guaranteed that the cake would make it back in one piece.

Their ill-conceived arguments thus shut down you turn to the matter of getting someone from Cypress Park to accompany you. Daigo seemed like the most obvious candidate. It would ruin pretty much all their plans and from what you noted of his mannerisms was unaware of the plot surrounding him. Thus it could be said that Touma was a natural second choice, seeing as you could counsel him on the long game that you are playing. The other obvious choice was to take Aneue, she would make sure you weren’t actually embezzling money or eating babies or whatever it is that Shirai imagined you did. Other choices included Mum and one of the other girls.

You elect to bring along the most respectable and least violent adult. That would be the timid Daigo. You recall he had a nickname back in the day, “Big Five,” but otherwise he was like Mum, only male. He wasn’t exactly someone you looked up to growing up. However your plan didn’t go off as smoothly as you hoped being harangued into bringing one of the girls with you. At least you could pick your poison and you opted for Sparky. With the way she was eying Touma you were sure your beloved childhood home would no longer exist if they were close enough for any amount of time.

However, you just didn’t call out Daigo just to interfere with their plans. You could do so much more. He was an intelligence goldmine as long as you phrased your questions correctly. In fact, you could use your relationship with Asuka as topic of conversation. It’d be both a genuine and innocent topic, given The Railgun’s presence. On the other hand, you could do Touma a favour and set The Railgun straight. She obviously has some beef with him and given your handling of The Dictator, maybe you could work out her issues. It’d be good practice.

Since you’re already helping Touma out with his love life, you might as well sort out his other problems. It is an electrical problem to be sure.

“So did Touma pretend to be a lost foreigner with you too?” you ask her.

“What?” she’s a bit slow on the uptake.

“I mean earlier when you came in you looked like you wanted to blast him with enough electricity to kill an elephant,” you elaborate, “So, what gives?”

“That’s none of your business,” she then replies quickly and sharply.

“Look I know our first meeting wasn’t exactly the best either but at least I know why you’re pissed at me. I mean he dropped those plates when he saw you. If I had to guess then you’ve traumatised him or something.”

“He doesn’t just piss me off,” she starts, “He’s like, so annoying. I mean seriously he cancels out my Level 5 ability like its nothing then has the gall to off spouting that self-righteous hero bullshit. Who the hell he does he think he is?”

“Right, so you think he’s got a swelled head or something because he never takes you seriously?”

With a bit of reflection she nods.

“Well I don’t know about you but knowing him, I wouldn’t take you seriously either if all you do is attack him on sight. It’s not really my place to say what his Ability is but I can tell you it has its own drawbacks too which is why Touma’s the way he is. You really should talk it out with him at the very least.”

You weren’t lying but you were using what little information you had about him as an argument.

With your cake purchase done, the time is now early afternoon, the weather is electric and the date remains unchanged.

Daigo may not have done it intentionally but he was rather pleased with your conversation concerning your friend and Sparky. He even got you some banana bread for having grown up in to a fine young man who cares about his friends. Damn right.

As you make your way back, you notice an MPV in garish pink coming around the corner and passing your party of three. You were able to read BIG SPIDER, clearly sticker’d on the side as it comes to a halt a bit ahead of you. Out steps Tamezou and four others. Shit.

On one hand you really didn’t want Daigo, Sparky and the cakes in to this mess. However, Sparky is a Level 5 and if gang movies taught you anything, Tamezou probably had more goons on the way. Either way you were going to call for back up.

You think that if you dragged Sparky in to a fight she’d probably use it as an excuse to ignore what you said. It also helps that you spot a store you could excuse yourself in to really quickly. As you make your way out the back, you give Asuka a call. She doesn’t pick up and goes to her voice mail.

“Hey, just calling to say that if you don’t get a call from me in another five minutes or so then I might be bleeding in an alley somewhere in the thirteenth. Hugs and kisses.”

In a way, it could be construed as romantic that your last words were to her. Then again you weren’t planning on getting shanked by some two-bit ganger like Tamezou just yet. You at least wanted to get laid first. Taking stock of the environment you notice a dumpster, a fire escape ladder, a hammer and some nails.

“Smart move running away from our party van,” Tamezou greets you in the alley, “It’s a shame you left your new girlfriend alone but hey, even I think you traded up from sword slut.”

His four buddies laughed it up. He also just called Asuka a slut.

Whilst he was busy mouthing off some more, you decide that he really would be better off with a few less teeth. Making sure to not make obvious movements, you take the hammer and introduce it to his groin. The next movement takes it to his left knee before you finally bring it down on his open jaw. Your blow visibly dislocates it with a satisfying crunch. You’d like to see him talk shit about Asuka now.

He does however vocalise his pain as he lies curled up on the floor clutching his nuts and bleeding from the jaw. It takes a while for his flunkies to actually realise that their leader just went down from a fast and violent force. They haven’t noticed the hammer so much as they are staring at Tamezou. You think you see tears in his eyes. When they finally turn back to you it is then that they make a show of pulling out their weapons. A brass knuckle here, a baton there, two chains and a sharp looking shank are arrayed before you. It’s the one with a knife that jumps in first.

The hammer was too far to intercept him anyway you reason as you let your telekinetic grip on it go. There was something else you could use anyway. Dumpsters here had wheels and thus didn’t necessarily require you to lift them. It made it much easier to move around. Shanker didn’t even see it coming as he was hit with what might as well been a truck. He’ll live, probably. You didn’t exactly have the luxury of time as Two Chains came up next and you stopped him cold with the dumpster lid, flooring him easily. He’ll probably get back up so you just overturn the dumpster on him.

The last two don’t look so courageous now. It was probably a mistake for Tamezou to have not followed you in his car. This would have been so much harder without TK and a bleeding headache. His backup also probably went to try and take out The Railgun. She was a Level 5 and even with that Ability dampener she could probably still be deadly as all hell at Level 3.

Baton finally gathers his courage and steps up to the plate. His attack is fuelled more by fear than any actual attempt at doing you in.

All that study and hard work was simply so that you could answer a question with only two possible answers. In this case, the answer was a short and curt, “no,” as Baton stops mid swing in front of you. Shaking your head and giving him a short ‘tsk-tsk’, you let him have a good kick in the balls before releasing him. You telekinetically disarm him, idly noting that “Brass Knuckles” is on his knees. He’s probably on the verge of pissing himself in fear. Deeming him little threat, you still keep an eye on him as you answer your phone.

“Hey Asuka,” you greet, “I just happened to bump in to our good buddy Tamezou.”

“Well then I take it that my recovery of your carcass is no longer required?” she asks over the phone, “And here I was hoping for a tearful farewell amidst the rain, blood and grime of the alley. It would have been suitably dramatic.”

You laugh.

“Yeah sure but I think I’ve got an idea about our next date,” you reply, “I was hoping you’d be free.”

“Next month perhaps,” she answers, “I believe our torrid affair was much too much for the Ladies of Tokiwadai. Just a small amount of time is necessary for me to make sure that the facts are accurately represented.”

With Asuka assuaged, you turn to the last of Tamezou’s chumps. What to do?

Giving the thug a lazy look, you tell him to sit tight and wait for Judgement, or Anti-Skill. Whichever shows up first you suppose. If he had any objections you simply tell him,

“Do you know what seventy kilo Pascals of pressure does to a human eyeball? Because I certainly don’t. At least not yet.”

With him suitably spooked you decide to add insult to injury and ask for a pen.

“Alright for this next trick, you’re going to want to close your eyes or I might accidentally poke it out.”

With that you write the kanji for meat on his forehead. As you do, you interrogate him about Big Spider. Apparently this guy was a newbie and Tamezou brought him along to get him some experience. In total there were ten of them and you assumed the other five went after Sparky. Big Spider’s an old Skill-Out gang apparently, but otherwise he didn’t know much more than that. You do know that they had access to firearms though. To finish up, you draw dicks on his cheeks and take his brass knuckles. He was only going to hurt himself carrying stupid shit like that around.

It was then that Shirai, Sparky, Touma, and Kaoru show up. You answer the unvoiced question rather casually,

“What? He called Asuka a slut.”

It is Serial #943,766, a Pistol, Calibre .45, Automatic, M1911A and it is currently owned by a very young man. He had taken it from a woman on edge, a woman who had contemplated suicide. In his hands, it had not seen any use yet but he had learned to respect the power of a gun. Today he had left it lying in a clothing drawer, well hidden and peacefully left alone. Perhaps he had not seen the need for today for it was sure he would have need of it soon.

If guns like it were sentient, they would reminisce. They would remember older times, times where it saw service, times where it was used and times it was taken care of it. Its current and previous owner did not know but Serial #943,766 served as a companion to a hero. In a war both long past and easily despised, it served and saved its wielder. It took lives, many lives, yet somehow it would eventually arrive to its present.

The hero took Serial #943,766 through many trials, on and under the ground. If anything, the one thing a gun like it could remember was the humidity. It was a very humid war. In the end, the hero would save the life of his friend, sacrificing himself by jumping on a bomb. If anything, Serial #943,766 should have been destroyed along with its wielder. Because it did not, the hero’s friend, Mason, would pick it up and keep it as a memento and a lucky charm.

However, he did not keep it long. A weapon’s purpose was to kill and a gun was meant to be fired. Returned to a proper quartermaster in 1967 where it would be issued to another user, another wielder and another hero. Unlike the first, Woods, this hero was never remembered by history. The only evidence of his passage through time was a note scrawled in a textbook about Operation Oregon. It’s new wielder was,

It was fitting that its new wielder would take it on their fights with the enemy both on the surface and under the earth. A tunnel rat was one of the most hazardous jobs a man in the line of duty could volunteer for. The small enclosed space was perfect for a weapon of Serial #943,766’s calibre. There were many enemies down below the jungles and they were silenced by Serial #943,766’s loud retort. Its arguments were few but they counted all the same. Seven points punctuated by their own flashes of fire.

But in the end Serial #943,766 could never escape the jungles of South East Asia so easily. Once its owner had passed, it too was passed along to another. A working gun, sold for cheap, no deadly and less reliable than the day it was made, was a commodity. All that was required was a simple trip the gunsmith and Serial #943,766 would be right as rain. If it could, it would remember Thailand, remember the heat and the whores but in the end, it could not. The one thing that stuck out was its passage to a new land,

Changing hands often and spending much time languishing as a show piece, Serial #943,766 would finally arrive in Japan. Another brief stint as a companion to a woman by the name of Washimine, it would finally pass through the gates and enter the Academy City. Here it was issued to a woman on edge, a woman nearly driven to suicide. It was rarely take out since its owner seldom needed it as security. However, when pushed, she was finally going to use it. For a gun cared not who it killed, simply that it could only do so.

Interlude End. We resume episode 15 on Thursday. Twitter will be more precise.

Fukou da. Let’s get down to business. Can we finally choose a plot hook? When writefag and /tg/ meet the story begins.

Also considering moving time and extending voting. Thoughts on that?
