You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Gerhard may have showed up just in time to not be able to help out with fighting the guards who had accosted Karel's mother, but he did assist with hiding the body of the guy Karel killed and interrogating the one who you captured, not to mention looking after Alicia while you went to check on Citrine and Marius.

And after finding that they were thankfully not in any immediate danger, you headed back to Alicia's room, where Gerhard shared some of the information that he'd gotten through interrogation.

He certainly works fast.

>Congratulations, you are once again an unruly WOLF!
>Wolves are cool and powerful... and also rather dangerous.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while wolves are really cool, they still don't count as people.

"I guess we ought to go find the others," you say. "Best not to draw suspicion while those guys in the Fifth Division are still roaming the castle."
"Yeah," Karel nods. "Where are they, anyways?"
"Ah- that's right," Gerhard says, snapping his fingers. "King Celestino wanted me to tell you that they would be gathering in the throne room. You know where that is, yes?"
"Even if he doesn't," Karel glances at you, "I do."

Considering that she lives here, it would be pretty weird if she didn't know where it was.

"You can lead the way then," you say, turning to Karel.
"fine with me," she replies.

Stopping just in front of the door, you turn to Alicia and Gerhard.

"Are you two going to be alright?" you ask.

"If you're sure..." Karel replies.
"I shall follow after the two of you after I have another go at interrogating the fellow that you captured," Gerhard says. "And I'll make sure to clean up before I go, Miss Alicia. It shall be as if I was never here."

You very much doubt that Alicia would appreciate having a corpse left in her bathroom to rot, after all.

"That's very considerate of you, Mr. Gerhard," Alicia says as she gets up from her seat and approaches Karel. "Be careful while you're out there, okay?"

>>
>>30623556
Arch tends to take anywhere between 25-40 minutes once voting has decided the next option, it usually depends on the size and complexity of his next sequence of updates, and to help speed things up, Arch breaks his updates into smaller chunks and posts them as he writes them, so a large multi post update that would take an hour to an hour and a half to make ends up being 4-6 updates every 15-20 minutes after initial update, it tends to pace things well.

>normal speed

In the recent threads he's posting slower than usual. He really needs to speed up.

I'll keep in mind he was distracted that one thread, but that's still kind of bad. I don't even dislike this quest (I've been following it near the beginning), but I know there's a good portion of players who can admit arch updates pretty slow, including me.

I think the fastest updates were the duel thread, or just the majority of fights in general.
>>
>>30623671
I'm usually doing other things and check in every 10 minutes or so, its entirely mechanically acceptable to someone who does not sperg out about content post rates on an internet image board.

"Alright, sweetie..."

Without warning, Alicia pulls her daughter into a tight embrace.

"I'm sorry to have gotten you caught up in all of this..." she says in a soft voice. "If I had any idea that something like this was around the corner, I would have never signed you up for that tournament."
"Hey, it's not like you caused this," Karel replies, blushing slightly as she hugs her mother back. "And I -wanted- to enter to begin with, so don't blame yourself for that. But we really should get going already... we can play the blame game some other time. Okay?"
"Times like this, you remind me of y-"

Stopping herself short of finishing that sentence, Alicia finally lets Karel go and goes back to her seat.

"Just... come back as soon as you can, okay?"
"Will do," Karel nods.

"Be grateful," you say. "Even if it's a hassle sometimes, having someone who actually cares about you isn't really something to be upset about."
"Huh?" Karel stares at you for a few seconds. "I'm not upset, it's just that she gets on my nerves a lot of the time," she sighs. "But even though she's a pain in the ass, I wouldn't give her up for anything in the world."
"Oh."
"I might complain about her sometimes, but that doesn't mean that I'm mad that she's around... you mean to tell me that your sister's never got on your nerves before?"

While you do love her to death, it is true that Citrine's personality can grate on you after a while...

>[1/?}
>>
>>30624719

"Anyways," you say, clearing your throat, "how secure is the path to the throne room? Are we going to be going through any areas where we could be ambushed or anything?"
"No, it's just a few long hallways and a flight of stairs," Karel replies. "It's right in the middle of the castle, so that kind of stuff shouldn't be too much of a big deal... besides, it's not like they can attack the two of us out on the open, you know?"
"Unless they get super desperate, anyways..." you mumble.
"They don't know that -we- know, so I guess we should be fine as long as we keep that to ourselves and play it safe."

Considering that Karel outright murdered a guard without warning not even twenty minutes ago, it's kind of weird to have HER telling YOU to be cautious.

"The legit ones leave me alone since they know that I outrank them," Karel begins, "and the other ones will probably play along in order to keep from looking suspicious."

>[2/?]
>>
>>30624927

Nodding in acknowledgement, you follow behind Karel as she leads you through the castle. Though you see plenty of guards running to and fro (seemingly in pursuit of Gerhard), all of them pretty much ignore the two of you beyond a nod of acknowledgement here or there.

Karel seems to be pretty well-liked here.

"What, you're jealous?" Karel says, glancing back at you.
"...crap, did I say that out loud?" you say, slapping yourself on the forehad.
"Don't worry, you're sure to get plenty of respect in a few years... 'Prince Reinhold,'" she smirks.

"Ugh..." you grumble.
"And here I thought that teasing was perfectly acceptable among -friends,-" Karel says, a toothy grin on her face.

At least the teasing means that she's not pissed at you anymore. Still though, you're not about to just let that slide. After speeding up a bit in order to close the distance between the two of you, you lean in...

"Whatever you say, -Princess- Karel," you whisper.

In an instant, Karel's face turns bright red and she glares at you like she wants to do Horrible Things to you for what you just said... but this isn't the time or place for that. Swallowing her embarrassment, she starts walking even faster than she already was while muttering curses under her breath.

With that bit of levity having passed, the two of you quickly go back to serious mode as you follow Karel the rest of the way to the throne room.

Luckily, things around here seem to be rather calm, aside from the two people in front of the door wearing what you recognize as City Guard uniforms. It looks like Celestino's being extra careful about this... not that you can blame him at all.

"Karel and... Reinhold, was it?" one of the guards says as he looks the two of you over. "Go on inside, the King's been waiting for you."
"Thanks," Karel says, bowing.

Walking inside once the guard's opened the door for you, a wave of relief rushes over you when you see that everyone from the fight back at the audience hall is present and accounted for (aside from Gerhard, naturally). Celestino, Gregory, Thierri, Lisette, Alberto and Sadaharu are talking by the throne, while Akemi, her son, Giancarlo, Matthias and Monique are standing closeby.

The rest of your friends are standing by the wall, and have separated into two groups- One one side of the window, Marianne (holding Chiara), Luciana, Elena and Andreas are talking while Takamaru stands closest to the window, while Nicolette, Melanie, Sylvie, Rana, Rey and Emilio are on the other side carrying on their own conversation.

Hey Arch, how come Granache's pastries are so sweet when it's late medieval Europe?

It's magical europe, and it's not medieval, seems like early modern to me (1600-1700)

I was wondering, if we did marry Luci what would we be? Prince-consort? Just some guy?

I forget what arch said before about lines of succession and what not. Seeing as Luci is quite far from the throne, dose that matter in regards to a designated word for the guy porking her?
>>
>>30626125

I think that was more or less cleared by Karel's teasing. We'll have at least a fancy title. Much to Rein's annoyance.

I don't know about Marconetti, but Granache's line of succession* clearly excludes people who aren't in the bloodline.

2: Raoul (absent)

While you'd like to finally be able to spend some time with your friends, it's probably best to report about what happened while you were away first. Waving to the others as you go, you make a beeline for the kings... and it looks like Karel has the same idea as you seeing as how she's right behind you.

"I'm glad that you guys made it back in one piece!" Thierri says, slapping you on the back the second you get within range of his bearlike arms. "Did Gerhard meet up with you okay?"
"Yes, Your Majesty," you say with a slight bow. "When we left him, he was interrogating one of the guards from the Fifth Division over in Karel's mother's room."
"And is she safe?" Celestino asks. "What about Marius and his wife?"
"They're all okay," Karel nods. "They were about to capture my mother, but we got to her just in time."
"Karel killed one of them, and I captured the other," you say. "That's the one who Gerhard's interrogating right now."
"I'm going to have to thank Arnaud for sending him over when we get back," Thierri sighs. "If it wasn't for him, there's a good chance that we wouldn't know about the traitorous guards at all."

> I don't know about Marconetti, but Granache's line of succession* clearly excludes people who aren't in the bloodline.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I just was wondering if there was some sort of default title for the husband of a princess far removed from the line of succession

Ya think Celastino would just throw us a pity title like Earl of Bumfuckshire or some thing?.
>>
>>30626226
>Ya think Celastino would just throw us a pity title like Earl of Bumfuckshire or some thing?.
That seems likely. Though we might always inherit the Eschenwald manor and totally be a noble*.
>>
>>30626260

Meanwhile Karel will never get anything and end up on the street once she becomes a grownup.
>>
>>30626125
The children of a King are princes/princesses, but that title only extends to one generation of their offspring.
This is why Sylvie's mother is a Princess but Sylvie herself isn't one.

>Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.
>brothel in a poor fishing village.
Why would a poor fishing village have a brothel? Brothels are luxury establishments for those who have money. A poor fishing village might have a whore or two, but you would need somewhere with more capital to throw around for legitimate whore emporiums (or as we in the biz call em, whoreporiums) to crop up
>>

As Celestino's daughter, anyone that she marries gets the title of prince, and her children also get the same title.
However, anyone who marries her children won't obtain the title of prince/princess, instead getting something else that I have yet to decide on because this shit is complicated. The same goes for any potential grandchildren that would result from this.

Luciana's kids would be within the line of succession, however... just way the hell off since Luciana is Celestino's seventh child and the other six before her are sure to have multiple children of their own.

Let's assume for a minute that he does not have magic powers.

Our king, who is an ordinary guy outside of the whole Axe Murderhobo thing, was able to find out a whole lot about us from a simple background check. At least aside from the stuff that we didn't know ourselves.

Do you think Celestino has never done a background check on Alicia before and learned that she had a girl instead of a boy? She owns a big restaurant in the middle of town with dozens of staff members.

Now, back to the fact that he's a wizard with magic powers.

I guarantee Celestino knows like several dozen "detect truth" spells (Light magic a bro) that immediately blew Karel's cover the second he used them on her if he did not already know by that point. Especially considering that we've already seen magic spells that are able to detect intent. And once more, the entire castle is warded, maybe even the places that people do not know are warded to begin with.

So the only way he could not know at this point is if

-Background checks fail
-Magic spells didn't work
-Wards somehow missed it
-Alicia never told anyone

That's a pretty big leap to assume, don't you think? I'm more inclined to believe that Celestino respects Karel's identity and keeps it a secret for his sake as well (unless he wants word getting out that he hired a girl to protect his son)

If I remember correctly it's nearby a decent sized river. It's not a major port by any stretch of the imagination, and there wasn't much done in the town itself, but there was enough thoroughfare to justify a whorehouse.
>>
>>30626538
It BECAME big and poor, but never while it was part of an active trade route. Besides, any big enough town will have a slum/poor district, but arch didn't say he grew up in the slums, he said he grew up in a poor village. Poor villages can't support whorehouses.

"I guess Guillaume was right to take that fellow under his wing after all..." Celestino says with a tired laugh. "Though I doubt I'd have similar luck if I was to spare one of -these- half-dragon assassins..."
"Yes, well Gerhard wasn't involved in actual crimes against the crown," Thierri says, shrugging, "just crimes against, well... Arnaud. It's similar but not -quite- the same thing," he laughs.
"That old bastard always was more intimidating than I was, after all..." he sighs.

Ignoring this side conversation, Alberto turns to you.

"So that leaves... how many of the Fifth Division that we have to take care of before the castle's safe?" Alberto asks. "You mentioned that you took care of two..."
"Twenty-three," Karel says, a grim expression on her face. "Not including their captain."
"I see," he nods. "And that's not including anyone else who may be in on this plot."
"Yes, we definitely have our work ahead of us," Celestino shakes his head. "And I have to apologize once again for getting you involved in all this, Sadaharu," he says, turning to his friend.
"I've dealt with worse back home," Sadaharu replies, waving his hand dismissively. "And if nothing else, I've gotten an opportunity to steal another of the Gilbeault line from Thierri here!" he laughs.

Having been officially dismissed, you make your way over towards the wall where your friends are talking. At first it looks as if Karel's going to join you, but she splits off and makes for Nicolette's side of the window.

Oh yeah, Emilio's over there.

Pushing the urge to tease her about a potential crush in the back of your mind, you continue along your way until you make it to where the four Princesses (plus Andreas and Takamaru) are gathered.

"Ah so you're back..." Marianne says with a weak smile as she repositions the baby in her arms. "Is your sister doing fine?"
"Yeah, she just has a bit of morning sickness," you reply. "She's been throwing up in her room all day, so her and Marius haven't even been able to leave at all."

It still feels pretty weird to be so thankful for "morning" sickness being able to hit at all times of day.

"It's a shame that she's feeling ill, but at least she was able to avoid being exposed to... -that-," Marianne says, closing her eyes as she shakes her head. You really don't have it in you to tell her that Citrine's seen a whole lot worse back home... "And what about Karel's mother?"
"That was a bit trickier, but she's safe too," you reply.
"Thank goodness," she sighs.
"You're not hurt either, are you?" Luciana asks, holding your hand.
"No, I'm fine," you reply.

And then Chiara nearly leaps out of Mairanne's arms in order to slap you in the face.

"...or at least I was up until now," you sigh.

"Back during the attack... I'm sorry for letting that one man slip past me. You handled yourself well back there, but shouldn't have had to dirty your hands like that Marianne. The same goes for you, Luciana."
>Sad smile
>>
>>30627394
naw fuck that

we need to teach her that killing to save her own life is ok, not tell her that it's fine because someone will always be there to save her skin

we can do our best, but it's impossible to be there forever
>>
>>30627319
>[2/2]

"It's nice to see you too, Chiara," you say with a tired laugh. While her babyslap didn't actually hurt, it did kind of startle you.
"Bbbbbba," Chiara says as she retreats back into Marianne's embrace.
"C'mon, that's not nice..." Marianne says to the baby, a faint smile on her face.

At least baby antics are still able to cheer Marianne up somewhat.

"I guess I can't call this a simple 'babysitting assignment' anymore," Andreas says with a wistful smile. "I already miss clasing aftre Elena's rabbit."
"I hope Inaba's okay," Elena mumbles.
"She's in your room, right?" he pats the little princess on her head. "You left her plenty of food and water so I'm sure she'll be just fine."
"Yeah, I guess..."

>anything in particular that you wanted to talk about?
>>
>>30627394
I can't tell whether or not this is meant to be ironic or not
>>
>>30627406

No. Nobody should be comfortable with killing.

That's why we need dedicated military and bodyguards: so that the innocent can have the comfort of not bleeding their hands.

It is a burden, not a privilege.
>>
>>30627319
I like Luci quite well but man, I wish to see how the Marie route would have progressed.

At any rate it should be quite fun after we get back to Granche I hope.
>>
>>30627422

Celestino's blessing. Unless my reading comprehension failed me again and we already told Lucie.
>>
>>30627422
Tell Luciana about our talk with Celestino. Tell her how Celestino seemed like he had no idea that the prospect of marrying Monique had upset her so much.
>>
>>30627422
seconding >>30627441 & >>30627449
>>
>>30627422
We should probably tell Luciana about the talk we had with Celestino, that we got his blessing to court her, and that he didn't know she was so opposed to it.
>>
>>30627441
>>30627449
Might as well mention these things before more ninjas, yes.
>>
>>30627433
i can't tell if you're joking

she's someone who is going to be at highly at risk, she's a target and likely to be attacked repeatedly.

she needs to be able to dispatch threats to her life. she shouldn't enjoy it, but it's better to have her able to kill someone than to freeze up because "muh feelings" and take a sword to the throat
>>
>>30627422
We should promise to bake another cake for the whole group after we return to granache, as a kind coming back celebration of some sort. We learned to do it so might as well do it on occasion and get better at it. Everyone enjos a ckae so it is a good hobby that makes other people happy too.
Actually, after telling Luci about our talk with Celestino, lets tell Marie and Nico and Sylvie we'll be baking for everyone once we return. It will cause some lighthearted conversation and take everyone's mind of all this shit at worst.
>>
>>30627466

I'm not joking. And she demonstrated she's physically (magically) capable of killing.

She does not need to be 'made comfortable with it', and in fact it is our job that she wouldn't even have to be exposed to necessity of doing it in first place.
>>
>>30627455
Sometimes I get this idea in my head that not letting Celestino know was just as planned.
>>
>>30627422
>>30627452
Yeah I like both of those too.
>>
>>30627481
And we can tell her exactly that.
"I am going to make everything i can that you will never find yourself in a situation like that, but i am glad you are capable of getting out of such an occasion alive."
it is not the time to say these things however.
>>
>>30627491
Highly unlikely. All signs point towards Celestino just being bad at emotions (on top of being busy managing this hellhole) and his kids interpreting this as him not caring, so they don't talk to him about their emotions, and thus the cycle of miscommunication continues.

One of the sideeffects of having a somewhat normal sleep schedule is that I'm pretty freaking tired right now... while I would like to continue for a while longer, I think that now's a decent time to call it a night.
It was fun though, more fun than it's been in a while. Probably because I got to talk about setting stuff for a bit.

Anyways, the next thread will be on Tuesday night and I'll try for an earlier starting time.

And as always, thanks for playing!

nothing wrong with putting it in a pastebin and sharing it after a thread. it will be exactly what it is advertised to be, smut, and you can just not read it.

Alas, I can't write smut worth a damn. I'm purely an idea guy.
