It is the year 22XX and Humanity has reached the stars. Alas, even though they have attained the lofty goal of interstellar travel, mankind has yet to conquer it’s baser instincts.

Humanity is ruled by ultra-Corporations. Some own continents. Some own multiple worlds. But no matter who you are, everyone is a citizen-employee somewhere. The qualms that beset corporations of the past, copyright infringement, tech theft, still exist. If anything, they are amplified by the scale of the players.

Without government to turn to for legal recourse and separated by millions and billions of miles, corporations have turned to less savory solutions to resolve disputes. You are one of those solutions.

You are an elite mercenary, also known as a High Impact Public Representative, of the StrikeOut Company, a group of mercenaries who accept contracts and missions from the highest bidder. You are launched out of a spaceship in a drop pod filled with bright orange and highly toxic gel. You crash land into the target’s facilities, make a mess, do your job, and then get the hell out.

You are a Fall Guy. You are a Deniable Asset.

Yawning and stretching you roll out of bed, the taste of bad chinese overwhelming any other sensation. Making the sort of unusual face that one makes when freshly out of bed you stumble into the bathroom alcove of your tiny, but free, apartment. Brushing your teeth, you blink blearily at the smart mirror as a variety of social obligations and requests pop up on the glass screen, glowing blue. You unleash a pained groan before spitting the toothpaste into the sink and reconsidering the screen.

Although you’re not terribly awake just yet you figure the sound of credits transferring into your checking account is as good as any to properly wake up to. You ping your HR adviser back, informing her that you’ll be over in a little bit, before pouring yourself a mug of coffee. You ignore the vodka fill line, instead pouring as much of the black brew into the mug as you can without posing too much of a spill risk. Sipping on it drowsily, you step out of your apartment and make for the HR offices. After a few minutes of unremarkable transit you find yourself standing outside of Svenja’s office. Another draft on the bitter coffee and you knock on your Adviser’s door.

Svneja pings you to enter and you do so, trudging into her office. Your HR adviser looks up at you, her face morphing into an amused grin. “Not much of a morning person Ivan,” she asks, failing to suppress a slight chuckle.

You grunt monosyllabically before sitting down in front of her, placing your coffe mug none too gently onto her desk. Svenja makes a small noise at the sound of ceramic striking whatever her desk is made of, which draws a small smile from you. You adviser huffs slightly, pushing her e-glasses back into place before looking at you seriously. “Alright Ivan. Like I told you in the ping, BiodYne just sent through your compensation package. Let’s just say it’s not as much as I initially expected when I offered you the mission.”

“Mmmurrgh,” you mutter ominously, drawing a worried look from your petite HR adviser. “Ivan,” she asks, worry evident on her face. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t teasing you or any-”

You pick up the mug and take another long draw on it before slamming it down on Svenja’s desk. Again, this is less an emotional display and more just a matter of your lacking fine motor skills in the morning. The viscous black coffee seems to have finally reached your brain, as you shake your head, and suppress a yawn. “Aw, don’t worry about it Svenja. I’m just pleased StrikeOut isn’t giving my a pink slip instead. Mission was a fucking mess.”

Svenja looks relieved to see that you aggressive mug placement doesn’t correlate with an incipient berserker rage. “Ah, okay, well good,” her face turns red and she covers her mouth. “Not good I mean! I’m not happy about this either! Just I’m glad to hear you don’t blame me for this, that’s all.”

You shrug, taking another draw on your coffee. “Eh. Not your fault. We’re all just gears in the machine,” you grin at Svenja, “So, what comp did I manage to snag anyway?”

“Well,” says Svenja, rifling through some print outs, “Let me see if I can find it…”

After a few seconds of searching she pulls out a piece of paper. “Ah ha! Here we are. Yes yes let me see here. Alright. Do you want the full report, or just a summary from me?”

Not where you'd think anon. The Cortech Neostructure was meant to be a much higher level gene mod, one that you would have had to find in a mission at a later stage in the quest.

I decided to make it available to you all as a form of compensation for Operation Bitter Prophet, especially because IC reasons meant that Davensh Niraj had to shit on you guys (covering his ass) and deny you a whole lot of comp. Remember, Davensh Niraj's performance report only represents what he thinks, not what I, the QM. thinks.

Just here to say that the whole thing is NOT easy to figure out from the info given. There's also the issue with everything in those reports and emails being circumstantial. BiodYne would probably want positive proof, like visual records of Singh's presence in the facility.
>>
>>30589412
I'm sure they did.

To his family.
>>
>>30589431
debt is just multiplied by 1.05 after each mission.

Savings... let's say it gets a 1.04 multiplier after each mission. I honestly haven't put much thought into that yet, so don't hold me to that figure.
>>
>>30589453
There is no way there's only a one percent difference in the interest we make on our saving and that which we pay on our debt. At minimum I'd expect there to be a three point difference, and that's if we were so loaded that the bank was trying to incentivize us not to outright pay of four debts.
>>
>>30589526

we are not making any at the moment because all of or money is in our checking account, and who knows, maybe StrikeOut is giving us an employees friendly fee
>>
>>30589526
Even if this hurts us, I have to second this. Interest on debt is usually huge, while interest on savings is tiny. I think 1.05 for debt vs 1.01 for savings would me more realistic. <spoiler>1.04 on our savings per mission would amount to 7.6 after one year if we do one mission per week. </spoiler>

“Fucking horsehit. Coward’s trying to cover his ass.”

Svenja nods silently, looking slightly nervous. “Yes, I know Ivan. I’m angry about it too, trust me.”

You sigh and grab the arms of your chair, looking away from Svenja and at a holoposter of a cat hanging off of a tree branch. After a few seconds of silence you face your adviser once more. “‘Spose I’ll get the Cortech Neostructure. After all that happened I think I might need a brain enhancement.”

Svenja shakes her head. “I don’t think you need a brain enhancement Ivan,” she says with unexpected defiance. “You did the best you could do in that situation. I don’t think I could’ve lasted five seconds in that facility, if half the things I read in the reports are true.”

You chuckle tiredly. “Yeah, well that isn’t your job. Although it’d be pretty funny to see you in drop armor. And with a gun! Like maybe a Rhino!”

Svenja joins your tired laughter with a bit of giggling of her own. The idea of your tiny little HR adviser toting a massive light machine gun like the Rhino is pretty hilarious. You watch in detached interest as the 10,000 credits of mission compensation fly into your checking account. Svenja’s eyes refocus on her e-glasses. After several seconds she looks back at you. “Alright Ivan, I just set up your augmentation appointment to happen at the same time as your checkup with Dr. Barnes.”

“Two birds, one stone,” you reply, taking another sip from your mug.

“Indeed,” Svenja concurs, nodding her head. “So, I think that’s all for now, unless you wanted to talk to me about anything else?”

You sigh. “Welp, this is going to suck, but may as well pay off as much of it as I can right now. I’ll put 10,969 credits down for debt suppression.”

“That’s more than you got from the mission,” Svenja says, looking slightly pained.

You nod, grimacing. “Yeah, well that’s how it is sometimes. Try to line me up with some easy missions for the next drop. I could use one.”

Svenja nods, and you are about to take your leave when you stop at the door. A thought occurring to you. “Hey Svenja,” you say, turning back around, “Do you happen to have Dr. Tran’s home address?”

“Hmmm? Yes I do. Why?”

You rub the back of your neck somewhat sheepishly. “Well… I kind of grabbed the med kit from his body to help out Clayton. I was thinking that maybe I could send it to his kid.”

Svenja looks like she’s suppressing the urge to “awww”. After a second she nods. “Of course Ivan. That’s very thoughtful of you. I’ll ping you his address once I find where I have it written down.”

Giving your HR adviser a friendly wave, you take your leave of her office, stepping out into the long corridors of the HR department. You rub your chin, considering the possibilities laid out before you. Cy or Markos…

Well, you prefer getting tattoos drunk anyway. Weapon purchasing decisions, not as much. You take another long draw from your mug, emptying it. As you wander off to the HR coffee dispenser to get a refill you ping Markos.

>Hey man. You maybe want to meet up later and get the tats? Still too early for me.

After several seconds Markos replies.

>PUSSY. Yeah no seriously that’s fine. Still, we gotta hang out man. Been forever.

You take some more sips from your mug as you walk to the tram. Hopping off of it at the Armory stop, you step into the clean shop, and are met with a brand new holo advertisement, announcing a new shipment of ELMags. You don’t immediately see Cy.

-----------------

--Ranged--
Handguns: Tier 2
Assault Rifles: Tier 1
Shotguns: Tier 0
Sniper Rifles: Tier 0
Machine Guns: Tier 0
Ordinance: Tier 0

Tier 0 is untrained, and incurs a negative modifier.
Tier 1 is competent, and incurs no positive or negative modifier.
Tier 2+ is various levels of skilled, and incurs increasingly positive modifiers.

>>
>>30590656
Jeez, no need to be THAT butthurt. I'm just suggesting it as an intermediary step between assault rifles and LMG's. Plus, we don't need to pay for medic training, we can just ask Elda.

Learning to be a medic isn't quick, and time spent learning to be a medic is time we're not training the skills we're good at.

The point of being deployed in a squad is that we don't NEED to know how to do everything.
>>
>>30590706
>an intermediary step between assault rifles and LMG's
Thats the thing, we don't want LMGs, we're the CQC guy, thats what we do and do well, the other squad members do the heavy support and ranged roles
>>

It couldn't, when we're more proficient with what we're training for later, but now, it will only hurt us, if you wanted Ivan to use LMGs you should have voted for the LMG package in thread 1
>>
>>30590843

sure, if this was an RPG video game.

We should at least get some basic first aid training, it's useful no matter what. However I don't see the point in going for the jack of all trades route, it's not as if we can't still use those weapons if the need arises.

You decide to go and meet up with Cy, wherever he is. After all, that was sort of the point of you coming here in the first place, wasn’t it? You begin to walk around the Armory, looking for your fellow rookie. You end up finding him exactly where you thought you’d find him. Drooling over the new ELMags. You walk up to your fellow rookie and tap him on the shoulder. Cy pins around, startled. His face breaks into an easy grin. “Hey, Ivan! Good to see you’re back on your feet.”

You walk forward and stand next to Cy, smirking. “Not that hard, considering it was my hand that got blown off.”

Cy snorts and rolls his eyes. “Whatever man. Hey, you’ve got to check out El Supresor. Thing is a work of art and love and beauty and all that shit.”

Cy gestures at the same strange weapon that you say Darius using on your first drop. The railgun has multiple barrels, set up to look kind of like a minigun. Cy continues speaking as you look down at the weapon. “So anyway, railguns can’t normally sustain a high rate of fire right? Well the guys at ELMag figured that out. They have four railgun launchers or whatever set up and each one cycles around to fire a pellet of steel to create an insane rate of fire. Pretty cool right?”

You straighten up and clear your throat. “Cy. Did you see the recoil statistics on that gun? You’d either need to be in power armor or have crazy strength mods to keep that thing under control during operation. Otherwise it’d shake you apart.”

Cy elbows you in the side. “You’re such a downer man. This is an investment in the future!”

“Cy, speaking as your friend, do you really want me buying drinks for you again?”

Cy blanches at the thought of another Shirley Temple. Especially if it arrives while he’s trying to talk someone up. Markos did that to him once during basic. It was brilliant. “Alright man. Fair point.”

“Good,” you reply, rolling your eyes. “C’mon, let’s look at stuff that isn’t for mercs five paygrades higher than us.”

You lead your friend away from destitution and towards something that interests you more. The Armor section of the armory. In particular the gauntlet attachments. Although you ended up deciding to not buy that admittedly nifty cybernetic arm, those attachments have still been running around in your head. You rather hope that they have some versions that are compatible with your body armor. Your search yields some welcome results. All three of the cantrips that were available for your cybernetic arm are also available as gauntlet attachments. Leaving Cy to consider those for a while (he loves shit like that) you wander up to the front desk where the middle aged Armorer from last time sits, looking extremely bored.

“Yeah hey. I was wondering if there were any part time job openings. Preferably something related to weapons maintenance or equipment.”

The Armorer gives you a look that only expresses boredom and near universal contempt. “Send your resume in and we’ll see.”

You send the file over to the Armory system, and look expectantly at the Armorer. After nearly a minute of silence she rolls her eyes and says, “Allow us three to four days to process your application sir. We’re very busy at the moment.”

You look around at the Armory. Deserted except for Cy.

You swallow the hot ball of anger forming in your mouth. “I want to speak to your manager,” you spit out through clenched teeth.

“Speaking, asshole,” the Armorer replies, raising her arms in a traditional “come at me Bro” gesture. Something you recognize from your days of Old Earth Media Studies.

Taking a few calming breaths you attempt to use reason, even if you know she’s just being an obstructionist bitch. “Well. If there really is a huge order of Forced Undulation Concussive Klaxon Utilizers coming in, then wouldn’t you want another set of hands around to lighten the load?”

“You know what? Fuck you. I’m kicking your ass.”

The Armorer stops laughing. She falls very quiet and stares at you through thick middle aged lady eyebrows. She removes her e-glasses and sighs, closing her eyes. Then they open back up and she smiling. “Fuck,” you shout as you leap backwards, evading a massive foot as it drops in a thudding axe kick. The obviously augmented armorer jumps over the desk, fists raised and ready to go.

Your own hands are raised too, balled up into fists. You are standing in the middle of two rows of shelves dedicated to life sized plastic models of weapons sold at the armory. They are tall shelves, taller than you. In the distance you can hear Cy whistling, completely oblivious to the fact that shit is going down not even ten meters away.

well we did with the barfight, and we chose the abandoned area for our second tussle with her so we wouldn't have to pay damages

Calm down. I was pointing out we may need to pay for damages based on the last time we got in a fight and destroyed property.

You skitter backwards, floating like a butterfly as you pull back down the aisle, looking for a certain something. You find it. A plastic replica of your beloved tomahawk (You need to give that bad girl a name, for she may be your purest waifu). Seizing the imitation, you look back down the hallway at the Armorer. You grit your teeth.

“THOR GUIDE MY WRATH,” you bellow, your stentorian voice thrumming through the confines of the armory. The Armorer unleashes her own battle cry and the two of you barrel down the aisle, ready to engage in righteous and honorable combat.

The extra reach that the tomahwak affords you enables you to strike first, and you swing it down, releasing yet another battle cry. “FOR ASGARD,” you shout, bopping the Armorer on the head with the tomahawk. The cheap plastic replica shatters apart from the impact.

You hop back from the Armorer’s snatching hands, looking at the handle in slight surprise. You sort of thought it’d hold up longer. Shrugging to yourself, you toss it at the Armorer with a flick of your wrist and a soft “Eh”ing noise. The Armorer bats it away just in time to avoid it hitting her in the eye.

You take advantage of the opening to grab a replica halberd, shattering it too against the corpulent form of the Armorer. The rest of the melee weapon replicas meet similar ends, shattered against the Armorer. The ex-merc stumbles back from the series of blows, incapable of recovering quickly enough to attempt a physical rejoinder of her own. As you shatter her display props against her body you bellow various oaths and battle cries, “IN ODIN’S NAME,” and “I SHALL REST IN VALHALLA,” were some of the more comprehensible ones found on the security camera recording.

Eventually, however, all good things must end. After breaking your third plastic katana against the Armorer you reach back to the shelf and feel around, only to be confronted by emptiness. Your plastic arsenal is gone, completely used up. You hear the Armorer chuckle from behind you. “Out of tricks? Now it’s time to show how wrong you are.”

Your hands stop pawing at the air. Instead they clasp the hard metal shelves of the aisle. “The customer,” you begin softly, straining to pull the shelves free.

“IS ALWAYS RIGHT!”

You yank the shelves free from the floor. The Armorer’s eyes bulge as the mass of metal and plastic ascends into the air. As the shelves rise into the sky you note that Cy is standing in the other aisle, bouncing a replica grenade in his hand. And the shelves come crashing down, pinning the Armorer to the ground.

As the dust settles you put a foot on the shelf directly on top of the Armorer’s chest, pressing down slightly. Leaning forward on your knee, you look down at her, grinning.

“So how about that job opening?”

The Armorer gawks up at you for a few seconds before roaring with laughter. After a few minutes of continuous laughter she eventually stops, extricating a hand to wipe a tear away from her eye. “I suppose I can put processing that order of Forced Undulation Concussive Klaxon Utilizers on hold.”

“Excellent! I’m Ivan Kostov,” you say, removing your foot from the shelves and instead lifting them up for your new potential boss, “pleasure to meet you.”

“Rina Severini,” the Armorer replies, brushing dust off of herself.

“So, need a hand cleaning up,” you ask, rubbing the back of your head somewhat guiltily.

“Nah, that’s why I got drones,” answers Rina, as she cracks her back before looking at you, grinning. “Been a while since I had such a good fight though. Missed that.”

You chuckle and rotate your shoulder, making sure you didn’t pull anything when you yanked the shelf out of the floor like that. Eventually you look down at your likely employer. “So, you want to grab a drink or something? Seal this deal off?”

Rina scoffs and waves her hands. “Bah! A handsome boy like you has better things to do than go drinking with a fat old merc like me. Besides, Bob and I… well.”

“Hey, if you don’t want to come along, that’s okay too,” you respond, resisting the urge to ask Rina about her relationship with the surly barkeep. Somehow you think the combined power of those two’s misanthropy might be enough to destroy the Brick. “But I am here for some other reasons too. I was wondering where I can find your armor selection.”

Rina nods over in Cy’s direction. “For you, I’d suggest those. Tried telling the boy over there to stick to that too. Didn’t listen.”

Nodding your thanks you start to trot over to the area that Rina indicated, perusing the selection of armor upgrades. Then a thought occurs to you. Turning around, you face Rina and ask, “Hey, is there such a thing as employee discounts here?”

Rina raises an eyebrow. “Huh. Never had any other employees here before to be honest. Sure, why not,” she notices your incipient arm pump. “That doesn’t mean you’re employed here yet Kostov. Wait until after your first day on the job before trying any cute shit.”

Your arm pump turns into a lopsided shrug. “Aw, alright. Fair enough.”

You turn to collect Cy before he makes any other ill advised purchases. Pulling your fellow rookie away from a forearm mounted grenade rifle, you lead him towards the door. Just before you are about to exit you turn around and wave at Rina. She gives you a perfunctory nod.

>>30594628

Yeah, a dotted line just doesn't do anything for me. If it looks like you could have sharpied it on then you might as well have just done that, you know? If you're going to get inked it ought to be...more.

We probably just have different aesthetic tastes, but that's how I see it.

You make your way to the tattoo parlor, hurrying to make sure you beat Markos there. Last time Markos arrived somewhere before you did the entire restaurant staff had been convinced that not only was it your birthday, you were also proposing to Niels. No, best if you make it there before Markos does. Hurrying up, you arrive at the parlor at the same time Markos does, the two of you nearly bouncing into one another. Markos recovers first. :Hey buddy,” he cries, beaming at you, “Finally get to see you again. Been too long.”

“Hey Markos,” you reply, grinning albeit somewhat nervously. “You weren’t just waiting here and doubled back so you could run into me, thus throwing off my guard for potential shenanigans, were you?”

Markos’ eyebrows furrow in confusion. “What? No. Although it does sound like a good idea. Gotta keep that in mind for later. Thanks dude!”

Cursing yourself internally, you lead the way into the parlor, where a friendly service-bot stands behind the counter, various images and symbols stenciled onto it. The bot stumbles forward, its synthesized voice stuttering slightly “H-h-h-hello Sir o-o-o-or Mad-d-d-dame. Welcome to Th-th-th-the Space Needle. H-h-h-how may I s-s-s-serve you t-t-t-today?”

“He won’t,” replies a female voice from behind a curtain. A woman steps forward, her mohawk adding several unnecessary to her height. She can almost look you straight in the eyes. “I will.”

Immediately Markos gets his game face on. “Why hello,” he says, a teasing smile forming on the corners of his mouth, “And who might you be.”

“Call me Tattoo Bitch. Cause that’s what I am,” Tattoo Bitch replies, her lip curling in barely concealed disgust.

Markos seems somewhat taken aback, which is a first. You snort slightly before addressing TB. “Hey. Just got my arm shot off and reattached. I was hoping to get a little something to commemorate it.”

TB looks you up and down appraisingly. “You fought Dreads right?”

So with the current state of gene therapy and biotech, what's the average life expectancy for super mercs who manage to save enough to retire?
>>
>>30595421
So, how much would de-aging augments cost? In case we ever need to get Rina and Bob and anniversary gift or something.
>>
>>30595493
Cancer is still the biggest concern, along with something I call Fractal Genome Syndrome, which is the result of some sort of major fuck up that occurs during cell division. More common in heavily gene modified mercs.

However, technology is still progressing in DAQ, so Ivan and Friends can legitimately expect to live forever should they last another 50 years or so. As evidenced in Bitter Prophet several Corps are well on their way to releasing the technology to do so.
>>
>>30595493
I think it boils down to "However long you can keep from some fragment of your past tracking you down and taking you out."
>>
>>30595578
De-Aging is harder to the point of impossible. Maintaining a youthful chromosome is much easier than repairing an older and more damaged one.
>>
>>30595616
Huh. That surprises me.
>>
>>30595616
How do you maintain your chromosomes as to remain youthful? Is there a specific genemod that assist with the process, or is it like flu shot style treatment?
