CHAPTER 2: NO MAN’S LAND

Night falls quietly over the docks.

You’ve been here often, but the silence never ceases to surprise you. All these people, all packed so tight, but then you get to the water’s edge, and there’s just the slow, steady murmur of the tide, and occasional distant whine of traffic. From your vantage atop a nearby ledge, the maze of shipping crates down below seem like another world entirely – a stooped, dark place, no contender with the city of light and life that is NY proper. Across the waters, Manhattan gleams like a faraway promise, dappling the waves with thousands of tiny, spectral lights.

Reminds you of river lanterns, tiny flames flickering their along way, to and fro through the black…

You sniff at the breeze. Your mark is down below. He’s one of Hammerhead’s men. After the mysterious mutant from the shipyard incident flagged Creeper’s infrastructure to the authorities, the drug baron receded into the shadows, intent on biding his time. The police, unaware of his more elusive holdings, couldn’t capitalize on his losses, but others were eager to try. Hammerhead. Tombstone. The Owl. Mister Negative. Four of the most powerful men in New York saw the promise of a power vacuum, and Creeper’s slice of Queens soon became a battleground.

The man you’re following is trying to reopen one of Creeper’s old drug contacts. There’s a deal going on down below that will reopen Queens to an inlet of devastating narcotics. For the past week, you’ve been systematically taking apart any such operation to catch your notice.

>OPTICAL FORCE BLASTS
JJ has developed the ability to project a beam of intense electromagnetic forces from his eyes!

>Level 3: At this level, JJ’s force beams can smash reinforced materials and cause significant damage to bones and deep tissue. The beam can be widened to a meter. If shot in standard or lower width, the beams may change direction at one point in their flight.

>the beams may change direction
>may change direction
>change direction

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
>Level 4
At this level, JJ’s force beams may easily blast apart metallic constructs. They can be ‘reversed’ to draw objects towards JJ rather than pushing them away.

>GET OVER HERE!!!

>Level 5
Fuck you move bitch. JJ’s force beams are now nearly unstoppable and can change direction twice in their flight.

>change direction twice in their flight.
>change direction twice
>change direction

now add geointuitive vision and we never miss AND have beams that adjust at 3rd level, and push & pull at 4th level and a 2nd adjustment at 5 level

You slide deftly down the nearby piping, landing silently upon one of the crates down below. Against the starless black of the sky, you’re less than nothing, your descent going unnoticed.

You make your way along the container, staying low until you can hear the guttural thrum of a nearby vehicle. Two vehicles, actually – a sedan, you think, and something with a particularly powerful, thirsty sort of engine. You breathe in and figures materialize down below, showing up as tiny pinpricks of information in the flurry of sensation.

Five men. Three Caucasian, two Chinese. One carries with him the scent of your mark. All of them smell of nervous anticipation, and fine articles of clothing, and faint traces of blood. You only have one mark here, but all of them are involved. Three of them stand nearby, nursing firearms, while your mark and one of the others discuss business.

You consider your next course of action.

>OPTICAL HEAT BLASTS
>JJ has developed the ability to project a beam of intense thermal radiation from his eyes!

Straight up plus is that this lets us shoot laser from our eyes instead of mouth, so it has a better chance for surprise attack and more stealthy.
>Level 1: At this level JJ may inflict near-immediate second degree burns, and can do more damage with continual attention. He may fire the beam at a spread of up to eight inches at the cost of reduced potency, and may fine-tune the beam to an inch.

Second degree burns at level 1 isn't something to scoff at, plus you can make it a fat 8 inch beam.
>Level 2: JJ may now inflict near-immediate third degree burns.
This ups the damage considerably.
>Level 3: JJ may now inflict near-immediate fourth degree burns. He may emit a sudden flash of microwave radiation that causes intense pain but no lasting damage. The beam may now be pinpointed to half an inch.
it can do 4 th degree burns or micro waves, at level 2 it was lethal, but now it can kill people out right.
>Level 4: JJ may now slice through steel with his gaze. He may emit X-rays in order to see through solid objects. The beam may now be extended to twelve inches or pinpointed to a centimetre.
He can see through objects now and can cut solid steel, also this shit gets fatter or pretty thin.
>Level 5: JJ’s gaze now combusts the air it passes through, generating a modicum of explosive force. He may pinpoint the beam between atoms if he has the appropriate senses, or widen it to a meter.
we can shoot atoms or make it a beamof death,<plus the very air is set on fire.

>OPTICAL FORCE BLASTS
>JJ has developed the ability to project a beam of intense electromagnetic forces from his eyes!
Same as last one, but instead of lethal lasers its non-lethal force lasers.

>Level 1: At this level, JJ may project a beam that pushes back objects. More damage will be dealt by propelling targets into other solids than by the actual blast.
this is straight up bonus in that it lets us shoot a ranged super punch

>Level 2: At this level, JJ’s force beams hit with considerable force, able to cause serious tissue damage. The beam may be widened to thirty inches or pinpointed to a centimetre.

The force has more kick and can be focused

>Level 3: At this level, JJ’s force beams can smash reinforced materials and cause significant damage to bones and deep tissue. The beam can be widened to a meter. If shot in standard or lower width, the beams may change direction at one point in their flight.
Now we are doing serious damage, at this level we are destroying walls.

>Level 4: At this level, JJ’s force beams may easily blast apart metallic constructs. They can be ‘reversed’ to draw objects towards JJ rather than pushing them away.
So now we can destroy metal structures and use this power to basically makes our eyes similar to a normal green lantern hand.

>Level 5: Fuck you move bitch. JJ’s force beams are now nearly unstoppable and can change direction twice in their flight.
We can change this shit and is almost impossible to stop.

>[X] Take out the watchmen.

The gunmen could make things complicated.

You linger on the periphery a while, observing their patterns, their cycles and small habits, and soon enough you choose one with a penchant for straying further than the rest. You slide down to ground level in the slither of space between a pair of containers, waiting for him to saunter past.

He vanishes into the black, his voice cut off before it can bloom into a panicked shout. Your claws dig deep into his throat, and you stay with him until he goes cold, your hand over his mouth. In several days’ time, his body will be discovered floating in the bay, already bloated with the superfluous fluids of death.

You sprint quietly round the other side, timing your run so as to miss the gaze of an absently-watching thug. He, too, soon vanishes.

You come at the third one from above, leaning in from atop the crate on which he leans, dragging him up into the starless night.

Soon after you’ve finished with them, you smell agitation down below, and your mark begins to realize that he hasn’t heard from his men in a while.

>SONIC SCREAM
>JJ develops the ability to emit waves of sonic force from his vocals.
its not as focused as the eye powers, but it still has ranged.
Unfortunately its not as subtle as the eye powers.
>Level 1: At this level, JJ may project a high-pitched beam that causes sudden and acute irritation to nearby listeners, and can strike objects with roughly the force of an expert jab

So it more or less is like an air punch, and can be painful to people

>Level 2: At this level, the soundwave may be widened to a meter, and strikes hard enough to easily knock normal humans off their feet. It can be emitted as a high-pitched variant that causes intense pain and, eventually, temporary deafness.
At this level we knock people off of their feet and the screaming will cause intense pain and temporary deafness.
>Level 3: JJ may now modulate the frequency of his scream, allowing it to displace objects by vibrating them at the right frequency. This makes the power ideal for dismantling machinery, and can cause deep tissue damage to humans.
At this level we can fuck up machines badly and make our sonic scream hurt deep tissue damage(can be any tissue)

>Level 4: At this level, JJ may widen the soundwave to a two meter spread, and can generate a pulse-variation in its frequency, allowing it to pass through some objects without causing damage while harming others. Alternatively, he may project it as a nearly-solid barrage of displaced air, which can seriously damage even hardy constructs.

So now its 2 meters wide scream(the main force of it), now we can fuck machines at almost any level and now can target certain tissues/materials and leave the rest undamaged.
>>
>>30576856
no i like the nose.
>>
>>30576871

>Level 5: At this level, JJ may precisely target the shatterpoints of objects, allowing him to selectively damage different parts of a system without disrupting the rest of it. With enough effort he may generate powerful enough vibrations to cause local seismic activity.
At this level we can disable single parts of a large machine and our screams make things shatter, also we can cause mini earth quakes with our voice.

>[X] Kill him and his partner.

You emerge from the sifting quiet slowly, pacing your way toward them, weaving silence through your steps. They don’t see you till you’re close.

To their credit, they don’t hesitate. The foreign man, the one bring the shipments in, draws his sidearm instantly, levelling it at your centre mass. His weapon, along with much of his arm, vanishes into the night, blood flying from a useless stump. He opens his mouth to scream, but your claws pluck it out of his throat. He teeters back onto your mark, who takes a moment to fumble with his corpse.

You use the opportunity to get on his side, and your claws so straight up under his rips, slicing his heart into even halves. The last thing his bewildered, terrified eyes see, is a small, green-eyed girl with long dark hair, a bright white jacket slumped over her shoulders.

Your name is Laura Kinney. You are a fugitive, a clone, and a mutant vagrant. It’s been a week since the explosion at the old derelicts to the East. You haven’t seen John James Green since.

You stoop down to wipe your claws clean on your mark’s jacket, checking the time.

>DRACONIC BREATH
>JJ can now breathe fire.
Same as sonic, breathe, could be argued to be more subtle than sonic scream.

>Level 1: JJ may project a stream of heat and unstable gases from his mouth that causes acute physical pain and shock to humans, as well as igniting highly flammable substances.

So we breath very hot air at this level, that causes pain.

>Level 2: JJ spits fire. He may expel a short-ranged (less than a meter) tongue of blue flame, or ‘lob’ small, arcing packets of similarly ignited particles over greater distances. His breath may cause immediate second degree burns.
Now we shoot a meter long of fire(shortest range of powers at this level), but now we can shoot fire balls that cause second degree burns.

>Level 3: At this level, JJ may breathe out a long, intense stream of azure fire. It can very quickly cause third degree burns.
Now the flame is longer than a meter, and can be capable of 3rd degree burns.

>Level 4: At this level J may widen the breadth of his draconic breath. He becomes capable of very quickly causing fourth degree burns.
now our fire breath is wider and now we can quickly cause 4th degree burns( should be noted eyes can do this automatically)

>Level 5: JJ will burn you to ash. His breath is more potent than any military grade flamethrower, able to defeat the heat tolerance of all but few substances.
Now our breath is at the strength of level 4 eyes, and seems to have a napalm affect.

SNIKT.

You dump the cargo in the river and make your way home. It doesn’t take you long – you haven’t strayed far from the scar. Which is strange, really, as you should be out of the state by now. The Facility know that you’re still in the city, and they will be back. You never did find Kimura’s corpse in all that wreckage.

Why you’re still here is something of a mystery.

As you trudge through the flattened snowlands of the scar, you notice another fire burning not far from the building you encountered Gabriella Alvarez in. It seems that yet another group has moved in. Since the shipyard incident, the scar has attracted a number of small mutant groups, most of them survivors of Creeper’s trafficking operation. One of the larger ones makes camp just north of here, in the remains of an old library. It’s becoming not uncommon to see two or three x-gene carriers conversing at random points in the scar, before going about their respective businesses.

You descend into the station. You’re not even a flight down before you run into Layla, lying under her blanket on one of the steps. She stirs as you approaching, meeting you with groggy eyes.

“Mmm…” She blinks and clears her throat. “Anything interesting?”

You shake your head.

“Nothing about JJ?”

You shake your head.

You make your way inside. Gaby crouched by the stove, cooking, and laughing about something with Noriko. The Asian girl’s arm is still raw, and it will likely be quite badly scarred. She nods up at you as you approach, as does Gaby. You make cursory sweep of the platform with your eyes.

“Where are the others?”

“Oh.” Gaby stops to taste a bite of chicken. “They went to talk to Borkowski. Doing some salvaging, I think.”

You nod approvingly, and glance at your watch.

You have two hours and fifteen minutes. The Hellions would be out by now, it would be unwise to contact them.

>[X] Visit the Parker House.

“Staying for food?” Asks Gabriella, her nose twitching as she sniffs at the meal-to-be.

You glance down at the stewing lumps of chicken, and decide not.

“No.” You state. “I will visit the Parker house briefly.”

“Oh, okay.” You hear the tenor in her voice, but you don’t know what it is. Noriko doesn’t know, but you can feel her watching you. You’re not sure what her expression means, exactly, but it has become a commonplace one.

“Call us if you hear anything about JJ, yeah?” Says the neon-haired girl, forcing a grin. “Still gotta pay him back for this arm.”

You nod, and make your way out.

As a mutant with few, if any, identifiable markings, you are given no trouble for using the subway. It's a short ride and a brief walk to the Parker household, though you often find it oddly uncomfortable, the rows of short, squat houses and segmented lawns not sitting well with you. Too open.

Parker’s house materializes out of the deepening gloom. You make your way up to the porch and knock.

After a short while, the greying, thin lady previously identified as Peter Parker’s aunt opens the door, smiling broadly.

“Oh, Laura.” She says people’s names in a big voice. Like she’s always pleased to see them. It makes you feel sort of guilty, you think. “Peter was just about to call you. Will you be staying for dinner?”

>[X] “Yes.”

“Yes, please, thank you.” You murmur, the light of the indoors coaxing you into its embrace.

And, so, you sit down for an afternoon meal with the Parker family. This is not the first time this has happened. You contacted Peter immediately before following Jonathan into the debacle that ended in his disappearance. As it happened, his friend had already been keeping tabs on your small community, via strategically placed magpies. After the explosion, you talked, and the detective agency his friend works for even managed to track down the parents of the young mutant Jonathan rescued at the shipyard.

The two of you have been exchanging information ever since, though, so far, neither one of you is any closer to discovering Jonathan’s whereabouts.

Peter and Gwen seem pleased to see you. Gwen hugs you. Peter Parker is Spider-Man, but this appears to be a secret, so you have not mentioned it so far. You’re not sure he knows that you know.

You eat spaghetti and bolognaise. It is nice. You don’t talk very much, but Gwen does, so perhaps nobody notices. You are aware that other people find it easier to talk. Perhaps they simply have more things to talk about.

Toward the end the meal, you shoot Peter a questioning stare. He shakes his head sadly.

He hasn’t heard anything either.

You leave soon after finishing, your timetable looming in your mind. Peter’s aunt says you should come again. You tell her that you will.

You check the time.

You have just under an hour.

>[X] See if you can quickly contact Victoria.

As the night deepens around you, you dawdle a moment to think. You should be making your way to the Tabbycat, but you haven’t contacted Victoria yet. You doubt that the two of you could meet at this hour, but a phone call wouldn’t slice into too much of your time.

You slide out your phone and dial. It rings for a while, before a shrill, annoyed voice answers.

“What!? What is it?”

“It is Laura Kinney, I”–

“I know who it is. Caller ID.” She sighs, and you hear a door click shut behind her. Her voice dips lower. “You can’t just phone anytime, alright? Some of my clients are the people you’re dumping in the river every night.”

“I see. I’m sorry.”

There is a short pause, and then: “Did it go alright? Tonight?”

“Yes. Thank you for the information. It was very useful.”

Another sigh.

“Sure. And, no… I don’t know anything about JJ.” Oh. Of course. “Believe me, Creeper is looking everywhere for him, but the guy’s just vanished.”

“I see. Thank you.”

You hear her swallow on the other end, and maybe grind her teeth a little.

“You alright?”

You nod. “Yes. Thank you.”

And you hang up.

>[X] Straight to the Tabbycat.

You make your way back to the nearby subway station and take a few stops toward Brooklyn, where the soul of the city begins to change, veering into something more brick & mortar. Keeping a close watch on the time, you head to the Tabbycat, bypassing the long line of men and woman queuing under the watchful gaze of the huge, brass sphinx that looms, duplicated, on either side of the entrance.

The bouncer – his name is Terry Noonan – lets you through. You make your way across the sleek, dim innards of the club, toward the back rooms, where you change into your uniform. You run into one of the bartenders, who tells you that Ms. Hardy is waiting for you upstairs.

You quickly make your way up the spiral staircase to the terraces above, where the tables are sparsely populated. Ms. Hardy is sitting at one, conversing with a shaggy, bearded man in a long coat.

She catches sight of you and beckons you over.
>>
>(2/2)

“You’re late.” She admonishes, before turning back to her conversation.

“I’m sorry.”

You told Hardy that Jonathan had been indisposed roughly a week ago. While she didn’t ask questions, you can tell that she suspected something was off, and she offered you a job. Most of the time you wait tables, but sometimes Ms. Hardy just has you follow her around. Occasionally she asks you questions. And sometimes a person she is meeting with will be out of line and you will break 70% of their skeletal structure.

The night wears on. You listen in on a number of nearby conversations, that being the primary draw of this job. Eventually, Ms. Hardy nods farewell to the man, and glances up at you.

“Have you eaten tonight, Laura?”

You nod.

She smiles faintly, and dismisses you, telling you to wait on the tables downstairs.

People drink slowly here, so you have a quite a few windows to simply keep your ears open. You cast your eyes about for a few promising figures to eavesdrop upon.

There’s a scrawny, churlish man you recognize as a regular at one of the tables nearby, chattering away on his phone in a voice probably far too loud for the kinds of conversation that fly round the Tabbycat.

You sidle closer, making an obligatory pretense of fixing up a nearby table.

“…whatever it is, it’s got the ‘Cudda out of his hole…”

You pause a moment. You recognize that name.

“…dunno, man, it ain’t really my kinda thing.” He pauses, chuckling loudly. “The big guy wants at it, though, so you gotta do somethin’. I was hearing it’s a kinda, I dunno, like a raw material for that mutant crap Creeper pushes…”

Creeper. You feel your claws edging at the underside of your skin.

“…Well, anyway, you just best get a crew together, ‘cause this shit is hot. The ‘Cudda is nobody I’d wanna fuck with. Yeah, seeya, man.” He hangs up, and snorts into the dead receiver. “Moron.”

Creeper. Barracuda. A possible mention of Jack.

This is something.

He'll probably have back up but thats fine. Well kill them. Because thats all I'm good for. We couldn't save JJ and thats all I'm good for.

It would be foolish indeed to underestimate them - but it would also be folly to underestimate JJ in a situation when he didn't have us and our dice weighing him down.

Ouch. Probably Cyclops, but dammit, to Laura that's usually JJs schtick. Avoid even looking at him.

>[X] Sunglasses.

You can’t just grab this guy and beat the contents of his brain out of him. Nor can you just follow him when he leaves. You’ll have to note down his scent and follow it when you can. Clenching your fists, you move away before you become too obvious, absently scanning for anyone else of interest.

Your eyes settle upon a man in his late twenties, donned in a sweeping, dark coat and obscuring his eyes behind a huge pair of sunglasses. He’s talking any his phone, and looking not particularly pleased. You edge closer and listen in.

“…Well, I don’t do girls, alright? That’s just something you’re gonna have to deal with yourself.” He pauses, listening to whoever’s on the other end with an increasingly pronounced. “Yeah… yeah…” He scratches his head, making a pained little expression. “…How much are we talking?”

His eyebrows rise behind those glasses of his, and he whistles loudly.

“…That… is an attractive offer. Alright, so, the guy, then.” He listens for a moment, before shaking his head. “No, no girls, ever. I’ll do the guy, and then that’s that. You need her gone too, you can get some other fella.”

It seems as though someone is going to die tonight.

You spend the rest of the evening intermittently cleaning tables and checking up on the rattish man whose scent you’ve tagged. Eventually, he takes his leave, and you’re waiting around for another hour afterwards. The sunglasses man departs shortly before you do. It occurs to you, as you grab your jacket, that you may be the only think standing between a human being and certain death.

With that in mind for the next thread, I'm gonna call this one here. I'm getting too tired to post coherently and I can see my typos building like a great, thunderous wave waiting behind a dam.

HMQ will return as soon as possible. I'd like it if that were Monday.

What, a Spider-Tracer or something? We're currently Ninja-Bloodhound-Girl mode, best we can do is remember the scent and hope for the best or follow him immediately.

goddamn you people's pushing the heroics fetish onto Laura too now.
>>
>>30579226
It's fine Crusty, this has been a great double issue of HMQ. JJ crackbitched like usual, we control Laura and don't immediately abuse it, etc.
still, if we're still controlling her when/if we find JJ, likely reaction: Write in: Hold hands. Thanks for running, now rest your tea glands.

She kind of has a thing for him so it makes sense that some of him characteristics would rub off on her.

Your goddamn right
>>
>>30579506
by the same argument it would "make sense" for JJ to become more pragmatic and callous but that isn't gonna happen any time soon is it?

can there be one character that isn't forced to be a shonen protagonist of idealism

just one

really

pls
>>
>>30579570
It's fine Pls. Laura just needs to be shown that she made the wrong choice here. And that will happen Monday.

you know that won't teach the players anything though. they never want to learn that lesson. ever.

if a character ever learns it, the players can unlearn it for them.
>>
>>30579570
Well, prehaps we can work in some nice. angry and self preservationist choices once we get JJ back on our leash. >It fits that he has had bad times.

>>30579681
Of course, we have been trying to lead her away from these actions and once JJ left/was taken/were lost from her life she relapsed. Completely understandable.

I'll say this, I don't see what you could be complaining about. The actions the thread has lead them through seem, for all intents and purposes, to fit very nicely with their characters and their developing psyches. If it gets worse take two asprin and I don't know... quit?
>>
Is it just me, or JJ should get some sort of weapon? I made suggestions before, but we should decide on something cool. Since he is "stealth" I think we should go with something ether mid range, or thrown.
Also we should use JJ super senses to find weak points in enemies armor. (shuld get more agility for us to actually be able to hit them tho, but that ain't happening anytime soon)
My suggestions are
1)Spear. It has good range (out of reach), and decent trow-ability. Maybe we can find a long metal pole/pipe, and sharpen the end. We then can channel electric touch taught it, and stay away from grapple range in most cases. Can be used as led pipe, maybe add string at the end, with a loop around it, so we can trow and recover it.
2) Trowing knifes/tings. We get some disposable thrown weapon, preferably the industrial nails or something. Can be used as thrown weapon, and can probably be salvaged for cheap in nearest construction site, or brought at store. Can be used to shank, and channel electrical. We can stab them in walls with our strength, and use them as stairs. Conceal all over body, so there is a chance we can get them taught security.

Any other ideas? Claws are good for backup, but we need disposable weapons, to keep enemies away from us. Invisibility compliments hit and run way better, that sneak up and grapple.
