Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is heavy and the date is July 28.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you are being reassured by your girlfriend that all is right with the world.

“So as I was saying, I’m pretty sure there is a gap in our memories,” Asuka drones on, “Because I would have remembered a kiss like that. That you had fainted leads me to conclude that someone or something wanted us to forget something very specific, irrelevant and that has no bearing on how the world works at all. It was probably not important anyway.”

You’re honestly not very convinced.

“But enough about our missing memories, and I hope you do listen because I happen to be an expert on this subject, let us talk about something much more important.”

She does not say it but you knew her name was on the tip of your tongue. Aneue was probably not going to be pleased you stayed out. Your return at the crack of dawn with Asuka did not go unnoticed at all.

“Despite everything I had an enjoyable time. I shall see you soon.”

She pulls you in for a hug though you really know what she’s going to do.

Somewhere in the back of your mind, you are reminded that if you left now you probably could escape Aneue. Another part of you argues that you’d just make future meetings worse. Both are silenced by the fact Asuka’s kiss. Hell why not? It’s not like you were going to get off scot free anyway. Might as well go balls deep and kiss her back. To her credit, Asuka isn’t surprised and doesn’t resist.

You both only break away from air, and unlike children getting caught, your expressions are unrepentant as the both of you turn to face Aneue. Surprisingly she doesn’t seem to upset as you’d think she’d be.

“Kudou, Torikov, my office now.”

You’re still holding hands as you sit across from Aneue in her office.

“I believe I advised to not bring her back too late,” she starts, “Well what do you have to say for yourself?”

“I believe I did not break any rules,” Asuka replies easily, “Not did anything else get broken.”

“Is that so?” Aneue shifts her gaze towards you, “Then what exactly is the nature of your relationship? I would like to you to state it clearly.”

You almost repeat what you’ve said to Asuka earlier but decide to mix it up a bit.

“Stubborn Violent boy likes cute ferocious girl,” you answer.

Aneue gives you a scrutinising look as Asuka shrinks back shyly, blushing slightly.

“Well then you may go Kudou,” she dismisses, “I have business to settle with my younger brother.”

Squeezing your hand once, she leaves the both of you to face the music. You think if you’re going to spend more time in Aneue’s office alone it’ll be too soon. Her interrogation is standard but she hasn’t rearranged your spinal column quite yet.

“Well it is a good thing that you have done nothing foolish,” she gets up, “Otherwise I may have to have punished you. You may go, but remember, I’m watching you.”

Huh? You were expecting something worse but Aneue apparently trusts your word. You’re not sure if that was wise. You leave amidst the gaze of the various Ladies of Tokiwadai. By the time you get back to your dorms, you find Kanzaki and Kaur waiting at your front door.

“Torikov-san, we require your assistance in a matter, I trust you can help us by being the mediator of this dispute,” Kaoru greets you.

“We do not need to bring in outsiders in to this,” Kanzaki argues.

Well it looks like you had to take sides right from the get go,

Well if anything, it doesn’t hurt you to listen anyway. Kaoru of course is hesitant herself to speak to you and Kanzaki looks on as if she expected this.

“Well to be honest, what we’re about to do is completely unprecedented and could possibly be the most dangerous magic in terms of consequences. We’re not even sure it will work.”

She leads you to Kamijou’s dorm. He’s sitting at his table with that black robed punk you threw off the third floor several days ago. The Index is lying on Kamjiou’s bed seemingly asleep.

“What we’re going to do is delve in to her mind to decouple her killswitch,” Kaoru continues, “Three of us must make the journey and between the four of us, that would mean either two Anglicans enter or one Anglican remains behind. I must be frank, I do not trust them to not interfere and sabotage our efforts here.”

“We are more invested in the Index’s well-being than you seem to believe,” the punk shoots back.

“Yet your methods doesn’t seem to reflect that,” Kaoru shoots back, “In any case, I won’t ask you to accompany me on this journey but I would like to ask you to remain to watch over us during the procedure.”

In short they have a problem in deciding who to send and who to leave behind. That’s probably why you were here. Kaur is obviously going since this is her show supposedly. Pick the away team,

You decide to accompany Kaoru and Kanzaki, if anything, Kamijou’s ability could only serve to disrupt the spell. That and you didn’t know the other guy. Kaoru isn’t sure about your choice but it is not like she had much choice in the matter.

“Very well, then I shall begin the ritual.”

“Remember if we are not back by the deadline erase Index’s memories,” Kanzaki instructs her partner, “Even if we don’t make it back.”

“Stay safe,” Kamijou says to you.

With his words, a curtain seems to fall on your eyes. Once your vision clears, you find the three of you are now standing in the centre of the church. Kaoru looks unfazed but Kanzaki is look around in awe. The interior is well lit by stained glass windows. They depict saints though you’re not sure what they could represent. The altar and cross are farther away and there are side doors.

The three of you approach the altar which is overlooked by the cross. It is flat and draped over by a red cloth. Kanzaki hazarded that it is a representation of a holy shroud though she could not tell which one it was exactly. The cross is plain wood and would be about the size of the altar if you estimate correctly.

“This is a representation of her faith,” Kaoru comments, “Christ is missing from the cross, further evidence of someone subverting her faith for their own gain. Be on the lookout for him.”

“I suppose you are an expert at the subject,” Kanzaki seems displeased.

“Everything here is symbolic, but also very open to interpretation. Often they are very obvious but they can have hidden meanings as well,” she explains, “Right now we are at the forefront of the index’s mind. This is the image she wishes to project to the outside world of which we are a part of. Once we go through those doors this may become a little less clear cut.”

“Then what are we waiting for?” Kanzaki asks.

“There could be additional clues lying about but I don’t see any,” Kaoru then turns to you, “Shall we?”

You give a brief look over the windows but they depict female figures in robes with a halo around their heads. They seem to be saints, as Kanzaki points out as she identifies Saint Hilda of Whitby. However there is nothing much else of note as your party continues through the right door.

You are treated to the sight of books. They are piled in massive towers all around you.

“I see, this is where she keeps the grimoiries,” Kaoru voices her thought.

“This is a library of forbidden books. We should turn back before we disturb anything,” Kanzaki looks mildly disturbed.

“Then where is the librarian?” Kaoru asks, “Looks less of a library to me and more of a trash heap.”

“Perhaps we should look for it?” you ask.

“We are here to disable her kill switch not mess around with her psyche,” Kaoru corrects you, “We can do that later anyway.”

A chill starts propagating the deeper your party wanders in but Kaoru seems unfazed. Fog starts to descend before you clear another stack of books. However the three of you can still see clearly a statue of Christ. There is no cross behind him however.

“Looks like we found him,” Kaoru makes to remove it before Kanzaki stops her with her huge sword.

“He’s holding something at bay,” she warns, “Moving him now could unleash the seal on the books, or worse.”

Deciding to leave Christ for now, the three of you return and go through the other door. The atmosphere is different here since it is a much smaller room. The top of the walls are lined with fire, providing heat and lighting. It’s a bit uncomfortable but yet again Kaoru is unfazed. Hanging in the middle of the room is some kind of painting or mural. There’s something behind it.

However, as soon as the three of you cross some kind of invisible threshold the walls inch closer. The movement stops your party.

“Kanzaki, try stepping forward,” Kaoru suggests.

She does and the wall doesn’t move. Kaoru then asks you to step forward and nothing happens. It is only when Kaoru steps forward that makes the walls close in. They don’t retreat as Kaoru back off either.

“Looks like we’re in the security room,” Kaur concludes, “It must not allow non-Christian magicians to approach. You’ll have to disable it without my help.”

“Even if I do not agree with disabling the security completely I agree that this is the key to solving our problems,” Kanzaki adds, “There is something wrong with that mural though I am not sure what.”

She brandishes her sword but gives you some time examine the painting.

You look at the lake and find nothing of interest in it. It’s a body of water that doesn’t seem to have any interesting features in it. You study the man’s helmet plumage as well, though you’re not sure what purpose they served except to reveal the man’s face. Really, you had no idea what you could get out of it until you notice there is a reflective quality. If this was a play then you hazarded that there was something going on backstage. Like something was trapped back there.

“There are many representations of the heroes slaying mythical beasts like dragons,” Kanzaki says to you, “If you are finished I shall destroy it now.”

“Didn’t they always have to save some damsel in distress,” you add quickly, “What if we destroyed the dragon part of the painting?”

“Interesting theory,” she muses, “contingent upon the fact that the representation of the dragon is hiding something.”

“Or maybe the whole painting is the prize and we’re going about this in the wrong way.”

“I think we should remove the painting,” you say finally.

“And replace Christ with it?” Kanzaki considers your plan, “Perhaps it could work.”

You run back to where Kaoru is waiting and inform of the decision.

“Perhaps replacing Christ with the painting is not a good idea, I would prefer that we actually take out the painting but otherwise I do not see why we should not proceed.”

Kanzaki carries the painting back over to you as fire dims. With little problem the three of you return to the church. Kaoru and Kanzaki are having a difference in opinion regarding what should be done with the painting.

Kaoru argues that the painting is representative shackling of the Index and thus removing it from the Index would remove the kill switch. Her rationale was that the painting did not have a damsel in distress in it. There was no need for it since Index was the damsel in question they were trying to save. Kanzaki disagreed and argued that the painting was some kind of protection. It was better to use it to seal whatever Christ was responsible for protecting and restoring him to his position on the cross.

Since you were the third person, your decision was the tie-breaker.

Your decision breaks the tie. You’d rather remove the painting. Kanzaki for her part does not protest the decision as she has already given her points. Your party returns to the scene of Kamijou and the punk playing some kind of card game. The punk’s eyes bulges out his socket as he spies the portrait under Kanzaki’s arms. Quickly he withdraws some kind of sticker and pastes it quickly on the painting.

“What the hell were you thinking?” he practically shouts.

“Calm down Stiyl,” Kanzaki is unfazed.

“Do you not know what you have under your arm?” he’s hysterical, “That’s a Saint class protection spell.”

“I do not see the problem,” Kaoru remarks.

The punk named Stiyl looks stunned from disbelief.

“Alright, let’s just ignore the fact that you have St. George and his dragon under your arm there,” he says, “You’ve completely removed all of Index’s protections.”

“Then I suppose we succeeded in removing the kill switch,” Kanzaki concludes.

“In a fashion,” he sighs again, “Look, now that you’ve done that, we have to send someone to look after her.”

“What’s the problem then?” Kaoru asks, “She can stay with me, or even the Kamijou boy if she so chooses.”

“No doubt she’ll Sikh protection,” Kamijou pipes up.

“Go to hell Kamijou,” Stiyl glares at him before turning back to Kaoru, “We’ll talk more about this later.”

You didn’t want to go out anywhere today, not after the late night yesterday and this morning’s scare. Deciding to make lunch as thanks for your help, Kaoru gets up and rummages through his fridge. She finds nothing and you let her borrow the keys to your room to acquire suitable ingredients. Index wakes up shortly as lunch being prepared.

“How do you feel?” Kamijou asks her.

Yawning exaggeratedly she replies,

“Not different at all,” she replies, “Still can’t gather mana.”

“That’s good then,” Kaoru starts serving what looks like curry, “We wouldn’t want you to be able to access all that forbidden knowledge and have the means to use it. That of course leaves the question of your protection as we’ve removed your automated defences.”

“Well I’d like to return to England.”

“I honestly think you would be safer in Academy City. Most magicians would have a hard time entering in the first place since this is a city of science. Then again far be it from myself to dictate your actions,” Kaoru gives her opinion.

Which is mostly ignored as Index starts eating.

“Or we could talk after the lunch,” Kaoru concludes.

Unlike the Index however you show more restraint as you help yourself.

Death to Canon!
Long live the new Flesh!
>>
>>30577377
I'd say the canon is fucked.
The Tree Diagram is still in the sky. This affects the experiments going on; including the Level 6 Shift. Misaka was planning on blowing it up before she found out it was already gone. Now she'll take it out and that just spells loads of trouble. And the part with Touma getting involved gets muddy as Misaka may or may not be at the bridge at all and probably doesn't think about sacrificing herself yet. And oh boy does this really screw Accelerator's character development. Last Order might not survive. Then again, the virus thing probably happened due to the project getting shut down; who knows if it will?

If Misaka doesn't blow it up or manages to destroy the remnant in the process, that prevents Kuroko's meeting with Awaki. It also may affect Awaki's allies that are locked up. It certainly keeps her from getting a faceful on Accelerator.

As you dig in, you chat with Kaoru about magic.

“So what really is this magic stuff?” you ask her.

“Well most magic is based on a belief system,” she starts, “It’s why most religions have some kind of unscientific facets about them. Most of what we do cannot be explained by science. Our belief in a high power allows us to borrow some of that power and do magic though we also have to use our mana for it. Is there a specific reason you wish to know?”

“I seem to have a gap in my memory last night is all and was wondering if there was a way to reverse it.”

“Well if it was done through magical means I would be able to detect it but restoring it would be another matter altogether,” she answers, “I don’t feel any residual magic on you though. Remember just because magic can alter memories does not mean it is the only cause of it.”

“Fair enough,” you reply.

“Hey if someone used an Ability on you I could get rid of it for you,” Touma adds.

Better safe than sorry, you think. It is a bit embarrassing though. Leaning over he pats you on the head once but nothing happens. Just to be sure he gives you another pat but there is still no change. After the third one at your request you’re pretty sure there is nothing Ability-wise that could have altered your memories. You probably hit your head or something. Still, you’d think you’d remember falling asleep with Asuka in your arms.

You do notice the click of a camera shutter, several of them in fact. Kaoru has her cell phone out. It is Touma who asks her what that was all about and she replies with a cryptic,

“Simply an appreciation of brotherhood amongst mankind.”

“Huh what is that?” Index asks.

“It’s a phone with a camera,” you answer as if it wasn’t special.

“Though you may consider it normal, remember that Academy City is two or three decades ahead of the rest of the world, especially magicians,” Kaoru reminds you.

Then your cell phone rings. You don’t recognise the number so you excuse yourself and take the call.

“Torikov,” Aneue’s voice is on the other side, “Why are you not in your room?””

She probably has something lined up for you. It would certainly explain your intact spine this morning.

I admit that the BNG games day is in like four and a half hours from now and I definitely will not be attending due to lack of sleep. It's also why I'm wrapping up soon.

“I’m helping out a friend so I’m at his place on the second floor,” you answer Aneue.

“Good, I suggest you stay there,” it wasn’t much of a suggestion.

It wasn’t even a minute after she hung up did she climb up the stairs. Aneue wasn’t in her suit which meant she was off duty. You didn’t think that she’d ask for a vacation just to go after you. In a way, you’re kind of touched even if you instinctively feared her.

“I seem to have found a day off tomorrow,” she starts, “I would like it if you visited Cypress Park with me.”

Again she doesn’t make it seem like a suggestion but you don’t voice it out as she leaves as quickly as she came.

“Dude,” Touma’s head is poking out of his room, “You gotta introduce me man.”

You only sigh at stupid and hopeful grin.

Episode 13 end. No interlude tonight chaps, I’m super tired. Shall we resume Tuesday? My twitter will have more information.
